[Rama watches the splendour of the highway, listens to the words of his friends -- and enters his father's palace.]

ಸ ರಾಮೋ ರಥಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನಃ.

ಪತಾಕಾಧ್ವಜಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಂ ಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಗರುಧೂಪಿತಮ್৷৷2.17.1৷৷

ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ನಗರಂ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ನಾನಾಜನಸಮಾಕುಲಮ್.


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ glorious, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನಃ friends rejoicing, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ aboard, ಪತಾಕಾಧ್ವಜಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ decorated with banners and pennants, ಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಗರುಧೂಪಿತಮ್ fragrant
with expensive incense and agaru, ನಾನಾಜನಸಮಾಕುಲಮ್ crowded with a variety of people, ನಗರಮ್ city, ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ beheld.

Surrounded by friends overwhelmed with great joy, that glorious Rama aboard the chariot beheld the city decorated with banners and pennants and made fragrant with expensive incense and agaru and crowded with multitudes of people.

ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಂ ಯಯೌ ರಾಮೋ ಮಧ್ಯೇನಾಗರುಧೂಪಿತಮ್.


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಅಭ್ರಸಙ್ಕಶೈ: resembling clouds, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರೈಃ pale white, ಗೃಹೈಃ houses, ಉಪಶೋಭಿತಮ್ decorated, ಅಗರುಧೂಪಿತಮ್ made fragrant with agaru, ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಂ ಮಧ್ಯೇನ in the middle of the highway, ಯಯೌ proceeded.

That Rama, proceeded down the middle of the highway made fragrant with agaru and incense, lined with houses gleaming pale white like clouds.
ಚನ್ದನಾನಾಂ ಚ ಮುಖ್ಯಾನಾಮಗರೂಣಾಂ ಚ ಸಞ್ಚಯೈಃ৷৷2.17.3৷৷

ಉತ್ತಮಾನಾಂ ಚ ಗನ್ಧಾನಾಂ ಕ್ಷೌಮಕೋಶಾಮ್ಬರಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಚನ್ದನಾನಾಮ್ by heaps of sandal, ಮುಖ್ಯಾನಾಮ್ highest quality, ಅಗರೂಣಾಮ್ of agaru, ಉತ್ತಮಾನಾಮ್ excellent, ಗನ್ಧಾನಾಂ fragrant substances, ಕ್ಷೌಮಕೌಶಾಮ್ಬರಸ್ಯ ಚ white silken cloth, ಸಞ್ಚಯೈಃ heaps, ಅವಿದ್ಧಾಭಿಃ unholed, ಮುಕ್ತಾಭಿಃ pearls, ಉತ್ತಮೈಃ excellent, ಸ್ಫಾಟಿಕೈರಪಿ also articles made of crystals, ಶೋಭಮಾನಮ್ splendid, ಅಸಮ್ಬಾಧೈಃ spacious, ವಿವಿಧೈಃ various, ಪುಷ್ಪೈಃ flowers, ಉಚ್ಚಾವಚೈಃ of high and low quality, ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯೈಃ articles of food, ಸಂವೃತಮ್ filled with, ತಮ್ such, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ excellent, ರಾಜಪಥಮ್ highway.

The highway (Rama entered) was splendid and spacious with heaps of sandal and agaru of the highest quality, excellent fragrant substances and bundles of white silken cloth. It gleamed with unholed (pristine) pearls, articles made of crystals, flowers of every kind and articles of food of every variety.
ದದರ್ಶ ತಂ ರಾಜಪಥಂ ದಿವಿ ದೇವಪಥಂ ಯಥಾ.

ದಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತಹವಿರ್ಲಾಜೈರ್ಧೂಪೈರಗರುಚನ್ದನೈಃ৷৷2.17.6৷৷

ನಾನಾಮಾಲ್ಯೋಪಗಂಧೈಶ್ಚ ಸದಾಭ್ಯರ್ಚಿತಚತ್ವರಮ್.


ದಿವಿ in heaven, ದೇವಪಥಂ ಯಥಾ like the pathway of the gods, ದಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತಹವಿರ್ಲಾಜೈಃ curd, grains of rice laja (puffed rice) sacrificial libations, ಧೂಪೈಃ with incense, ಅಗರುಚಂದನೈಃ sandalwood and agaru, ನಾನಾಮಾಲ್ಯೋಪಗಂಧೈಶ್ಚ different kinds of garlands and fragrant substances, ಸದಾ always, ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಚಿತಚತ್ವರಮ್ cross-roads worshipped, ತಂ ರಾಜಪಥಮ್ that royal highway, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Rama beheld the highway resembling the pathway of gods in heaven. Here the cross-roads were always worshipped with curd, grains of rice, sacrificial libations, laja or puffed rice, fragrant substances like sandal wood, agaru and garlands of every kind.
ಅಶೀರ್ವಾದಾನ್ಬಹೂನ್ ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ಸುಹೃದ್ಭಿಸ್ಸಮುದೀರಿತಾನ್৷৷2.17.7৷৷

ಯಥಾರ್ಹಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಸಮ್ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ನರಾನ್ಯಯೌ.


ಸುಹೃದ್ಭಿ: by friends, ಸಮುದೀರಿತಾನ್ uttered, ಬಹೂನ್ many, ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದಾನ್ blessings, ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ hearing, ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ all, ನರಾನ್ men, ಯಥಾರ್ಹಮ್ appropriately, ಸಮ್ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಚ worshipping (honouring), ಯಯೌ passed.

Hearing many words of blessings uttered by his friends and honouring each person according to his rank, he passed on.
ಪಿತಾಮಹೈರಾಚರಿತಂ ತಥೈವ ಪ್ರಪಿತಾಮಹೈಃ৷৷2.17.8৷৷

ಅದ್ಯೋಪಾದಾಯ ತಂ ಮಾರ್ಗಮಭಿಷಿಕ್ತೋನುಪಾಲಯ.


ಅದ್ಯ today, ಅಭಿಷಿಕ್ತಃ consecrated, ಪಿತಾಮಹೈಃ by your grandfather, ತಥೈವ also, ಪ್ರಪಿತಾಮಹೈಃ by greatgrandfathers, ಆಚರಿತಮ್ followed by them, ತಂ ಮಾರ್ಗಮ್ that path, ಉಪಾದಾಯ after adopting (acquiring), ಅನುಪಾಲಯ you may rule the kingdom.

(They said) Consecrated today, rule the kingdom by adopting the same path followed by your grandfathers and greatgrandfathers.
ಯಥಾಸ್ಮ ಪೋಷಿತಾಃ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಯಥಾ ಸರ್ವೈಃ ಪಿತಾಮಹೈಃ৷৷2.17.9৷৷

ತತಸ್ಸುಖತರಂ ರಾಮೇ ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಸ್ಸತಿ ರಾಜನಿ.


ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father (Dasaratha), ಯಥಾ as, ಪೋಷಿತಾಃ ಸ್ಮ we were brought up (ruled), ಸರ್ವೈಃ all, ಪಿತಾಮಹೈಃ grandfathers, ಯಥಾ as, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ರಾಜನಿ ಸತಿ when he becomes king, ತತಃ ಸುಖತರಮ್ with greater happiness, ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಃ we shall live.

Once Rama assumes kingship, we shall all live in happiness greater than when we were ruled by his father and grandfather.
ಅಲಮದ್ಯ ಹಿ ಭುಕ್ತೇನ ಪರಮಾರ್ಥೈರಲಂ ಚ ನಃ৷৷2.17.10৷৷

ಯದಿ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮ ನಿರ್ಯಾನ್ತಂ ರಾಮಂ ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತಮ್.


ಅದ್ಯ today, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತಮ್ enthroned, ನಿರ್ಯಾನ್ತಮ್ going in procession, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮ ಯದಿ if only we can see, ಭುಕ್ತೇನ with food, ಅಲಮ್ enough, ಪರಮಾರ್ಥೈಃ with ultimate object of life, ಅಲಮ್ enough to do.

If only we can see Rama enthroned today and going in a procession, there will be no need for food and no greater object of life to be accomplished.
ಅತೋ ಹಿ ನಃ ಪ್ರಿಯತರಂ ನಾನ್ಯತ್ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದ್ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.17.11৷৷

ಯಥಾಭಿಷೇಕೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯೇನಾಮಿತತೇಜಸಃ.


ಅಮಿತತೇಜಸಃ of undimmed brilliance, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ರಾಜ್ಯೇನ kingdom, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಃ consecration, ಯಥಾ how much dear, ಅತಃ more than that, ಪ್ರಿಯತರಮ್ dearer, ಅನ್ಯತ್ other than, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್
nothing, ನಃ for us, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will not happen.

For us, there is nothing dearer in the kingdom than the consecration of Rama of undimmed brilliance.
ಏತಾಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ಸುಹೃದಾಮುದಾಸೀನಃ ಕಥಾಶ್ಶುಭಾಃ৷৷2.17.12৷৷

ಆತ್ಮಸಮ್ಪೂಜನೀಶ್ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ಯಯೌ ರಾಮೋ ಮಹಾಪಥಮ್.


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸುಹೃದಾಮ್ friends, ಏತಾಃ these, ಅನ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ other, ಆತ್ಮಸಮ್ಪೂಜನೀಃ words praising him, ಶುಭಾಃ favourable, ಕಥಾಃ words, ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ hearing, ಉದಾಸೀನಃ remaining indifferent, ಮಹಾಪಥಮ್ highway, ಯಯೌ passed along.

Indifferent to such warm words by his friends in his favour Rama passed along the highway.
ನ ಹಿ ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ಮನಃ ಕಶ್ಚಿಚ್ಚಕ್ಷುಷೀ ವಾ ನರೋತ್ತಮಾತ್৷৷2.17.13৷৷

ನರ ಶ್ಶಕ್ನೋತ್ಯಪಾಕ್ರಷ್ಟುಮತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತೇಪಿ ರಾಘವೇ.


ರಾಘವೇ son of the Raghus (Rama), ಅತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತೇಪಿ even though he passed them, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ ನರಃ
no man, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ನರೋತ್ತಮಾತ್ from that best of men, ಮನಃ mind, ಚಕ್ಷುಷೀ his eyes, ಅಪಾಕ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to withdraw, ನ ಶಕ್ನೋತಿ ಹಿ was never able.

Even though Rama, the best among men had driven past them none was able to withdraw his mind or eyes from him. (They continued).
ಯಶ್ಚ ರಾಮಂ ನ ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ತು ಯಂ ಚ ರಾಮೋ ನ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.17.14৷৷

ನಿನ್ದಿತ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಲ್ಲೋಕೇಷು ಸ್ವಾತ್ಮಾಪ್ಯೇನಂ ವಿಗರ್ಹತೇ.


ಯಶ್ಚ who, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ನ ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ತು does not see, ಯಂ ಚ whom, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ನ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ does not see, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕೇಷು among all men, ನಿನ್ದಿತ: will be blamed, ಸ್ವಾತ್ಮಾಪಿ his self also, ಏನಮ್ him, ವಿಗರ್ಹತೇ will blame.

'Whoever does not see Rama or Rama does not see him, will be blamed by all men in the (three) worlds. Even his self will blame him.
ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಹಿ ಸ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ವರ್ಣಾನಾಂ ಕುರುತೇ ದಯಾಮ್৷৷2.17.15৷৷

ಚತುರ್ಣಾಂ ಹಿ ವಯಃ ಸ್ಥಾನಾಂ ತೇನ ತೇ ತಮನುವ್ರತಾಃ.


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous one, ಸಃ he, ಚತುರ್ಣಾಮ್ four, ವರ್ಣಾನಾಮ್ relating to castes, ಸರ್ವೇಷು in all people, ವಯಃಸ್ಥಾನಾಮ್ to the young and old, ದಯಾಮ್ compassion, ಕುರುತೇ does, ತೇನ so, ತೇ they, ತಮ್ him, ಅನುವ್ರತಾಃ were devoted.

That righteous Rama shows compassion to all, to the four castes, to the young and the old. So they were devoted to him.
ಚತುಷ್ಪಥಾನ್ದೇವಪಥಾಂಶ್ಚೈತ್ಯಾನ್ಯಾಯತನಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.17.16৷৷

ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಪರಿಹರನ್ ಜಗಾಮ ನೃಪತೇ ಸ್ಸುತಃ.


ನೃಪತೇಃ ಸುತಃ king's son (Rama), ಚತುಷ್ಪಥಾನ್ junction of four roads, ದೇವಪಥಾನ್ roads leading to temples, ಚೈತ್ಯಾನ್ monuments, ಆಯತನಾನಿ ಚ also temples, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್ ensuring that they come on to his right, ಪರಿಹರನ್ crossing, ಜಗಾಮ proceeded.

The son of the king proceeded, leaving on his right, squares (intersections of four roads), and roads leading to temples, monuments and shrines too.
ಸ ರಾಜಕುಲಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಮೇಘಸಙ್ಘೋಪಮೈ ಶ್ಶುಭೈಃ৷৷2.17.17৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಶೃಙ್ಗೈರ್ವಿವಿಧೈಃಕೈಲಾಸ ಶಿಖರೋಪಮೈಃ.

ಆವಾರಯದ್ಭಿರ್ಗಗನಂ ವಿಮಾನೈರಿವ ಪಾಣ್ಡುರೈಃ৷৷2.17.18৷৷

ವರ್ಧಮಾನಗೃಹೈಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ರತ್ನಜಾಲಪರಿಷ್ಕೃತೈಃ.

ತತ್ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಂ ಗೃಹವರಂ ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಸದನೋಪಮಮ್৷৷2.17.19৷৷

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ ಪಿತುರ್ವೇಶ್ಮ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಜ್ವಲನ್.


ಸಃ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ that king's son (Rama), ರಾಜಕುಲಮ್ royal residence, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಮೇಘಸಙ್ಘೋಪಮೈಃ resembling flakes of clouds, ಶುಭೈಃ auspicious, ಕೈಲಾಸಶಿಖರೋಪಮೈಃ resembling the peaks of Kailasa, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರೈಃ pale white, ವಿಮಾನೈರಿವ like aerial chariots, ಗಗನಮ್ sky, ಆವಾರಯದ್ಭಿಃ covering, ವಿವಿಧೈಃ various, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಶೃಙ್ಗೈ: on the top of the palace, ರತ್ನಜಾಲಪರಿಷ್ಕೃತೈಃ decorated with clusters of gems, ವರ್ಧಮಾನಗೃಹೈಶ್ಚಾಪಿ with palaces not having doors to the south, ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಮ್ on this earth, ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಸದನೋಪಮಮ್ comparable to the abode of Indra, ಗೃಹವರಮ್ excellent residence, ತತ್ that, ವೇಶ್ಮ palace, ಶ್ರಿಯಾ with splendour, ಜ್ವಲನ್ blazing, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.

That prince (Rama) arrived at the excellent palace of the king, which looked like the abode of Indra on earth, blazing with splendour. The various towers of the palace touching the sky resembled clusters of white clouds, like auspicious peaks of Kailasa, and like white aerial chariots decorated with gems.
ಸ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾ ಧನ್ವಿಭಿರ್ಗುಪ್ತಾಸ್ತಿಸ್ರೋತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ವಾಜಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.17.20৷৷

ಪದಾತಿರಪರೇ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ ದ್ವೇ ಜಗಾಮ ನರೋತ್ತಮಃ.


ನರೋತ್ತಮಃ best among men(Rama), ಸಃ he, ಧನ್ವಿಭಿಃ bowmen, ಗುಪ್ತಾಃ protected, ತಿಸ್ರಃ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಃ three courtyards, ವಾಜಿಭಿಃ on horses, ಅತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ having crossed over, ಅಪರೇ the remaining, ದ್ವೇ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ two courtyards, ಪದಾತಿಃ on foot, ಜಗಾಮ proceeded.

Rama, the best among men, crossed the first three courtyards which were protected by bowmen on horses and crossed the remaining two on foot.
ಸ ಸರ್ವಾ ಸ್ಸಮತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ.

ಸನ್ನಿವರ್ತ್ಯ ಜನಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ಶುದ್ಧಾನ್ತಃ ಪುರಮಭ್ಯಗಾತ್৷৷2.17.21৷৷


ಸಃ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ that son of Dasaratha, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಃ enclosures, ಸಮತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ having crossed over, ಸರ್ವಂ ಜನಮ್ all followers, ಸನ್ನಿವರ್ತ್ಯ having sent them, ಶುದ್ಧಾನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ the private apartment, ಅಭ್ಯಗಾತ್ reached.

Crossing the courtyards on his way Rama sent back his followers and entered the
private apartment of the king.
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟೇ ಪಿತುರನ್ತಿಕಂ ತದಾ ಜನ ಸ್ಸ ಸರ್ವೋ ಮುದಿತೋ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜೇ.

ಪ್ರತೀಕ್ಷತೇ ತಸ್ಯ ಪುನಃ ಸ್ಮ ನಿರ್ಗಮಂ ಯಥೋದಯಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಸಸ್ಸರಿತ್ಪತಿಃ৷৷2.17.22৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that, ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜೇ king's son, ತದಾ then, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಅನ್ತಿಕಮ್ near, ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟೇ having entered, ಸಃ those, ಸರ್ವಃ all, ಜನಃ people, ಮುದಿತಃ were delighted, ಸರಿತ್ಪತಿಃ lord of rivers (ocean), ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಸಃ Moon's, ಉದಯಂ ಯಥಾ like the rise, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಪುನಃ ನಿರ್ಗಮಮ್ for his return, ಪ್ರತೀಕ್ಷತೇ ಸ್ಮ were waiting.

When the prince approached his father all the people were delighted and awaited his return like the ocean waiting for the rise of the Moon.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತದಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the seventeenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
