[Rama enquires Kaikeyi the reasons for his father's grief-- she informs him about the two boons bestowed by the king -- urges him to uphold the promise given by his father and live in the forest for fourteen years.]

ಸ ದದರ್ಶಾಸನೇ ರಾಮೋ ನಿಷಣ್ಣಂ ಪಿತರಂ ಶುಭೇ.

ಕೈಕೇಯೀಸಹಿತಂ ದೀನಂ ಮುಖೇನ ಪರಿಶುಷ್ಯತಾ৷৷2.18.1৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಶುಭೇ on an auspicious, ಆಸನೇ in the couch, ನಿಷಣ್ಣಮ್ reclined, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಸಹಿತಮ್ with kaikeyi, ಪರಿಶುಷ್ಯತಾ ಮುಖೇನ with a pale face, ದೀನಮ್ looking wretched, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Rama beheld his father reclined on an auspicious couch and by his side was seated Kaikeyi. He looked wretched with a pale face.
ಸ ಪಿತುಶ್ಚರಣೌ ಪೂರ್ವಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ವಿನೀತವತ್.

ತತೋ ವವನ್ದೇ ಚರಣೌ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಃ৷৷2.18.2৷৷


ಸಃ he, ವಿನೀತವತ್ with all humility, ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಃ with a well-composed mind, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ first, ಪಿತುಃ his father's, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having made reverential salutation, ತತಃ thereafter, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ Kaikeyi's, ಚರಣೌ feet, ವವನ್ದೇ saluted.

With all humility and well-composed mind, he made reverential salutation first at his father's feet and thereafter at Kaikeyi's.
ರಾಮೇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ವಚನಂ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲೇಕ್ಷಣಃ.

ಶಶಾಕ ನೃಪತಿರ್ದೀನೋ ನೇಕ್ಷಿತುಂ ನಾಭಿಭಾಷಿತುಮ್৷৷2.18.3৷৷


ನೃಪತಿಃ king, ರಾಮ ಇತಿ saying 'Rama', ವಚನಮ್ word, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having uttered, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲೇಕ್ಷಣಃ eyes full of tears, ದೀನಃ wretched, ಈಕ್ಷಿತುಮ್ to look at, ನ ಶಶಾಕ was not able, ಅಭಿಭಾಷಿತುಮ್ to speak,
ನ not possible.

Dasaratha uttered the word 'Rama', but thereafter could neither say any more in distress nor look at him becuase his eyes were brimming with tears.
ತದಪೂರ್ವಂ ನರಪತೇರ್ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರೂಪಂ ಭಯಾವಹಮ್.

ರಾಮೋಪಿ ಭಯಮಾಪನ್ನಃ ಪದಾ ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವೇವ ಪನ್ನಗಮ್৷৷2.18.4৷৷


ಅಪೂರ್ವಮ್ unprecedented, ಭಯಾವಹಮ್ frightful, ನರಪತೇಃ king's, ತತ್ ರೂಪಮ್ that appearance, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ರಾಮೋಪಿ Rama also, ಪನ್ನಗಮ್ serpent, ಪದಾ with foot, ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವೇವ touched, ಭಯಮ್ ಆಪನ್ನಃ experienced fear.

Never before did Rama see such frightful appearance of his father. He was seized with fear as if he trampled a serpent.
ಇನ್ದ್ರಿಯೈರಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೈಸ್ತಂ ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಾಪಕರ್ಶಿತಮ್.

ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ತಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜಂ ವ್ಯಥಿತಾಕುಲಚೇತಸಮ್৷৷2.18.5৷৷

ಊರ್ಮಿಮಾಲಿನಮಕ್ಷೋಭ್ಯಂ ಕ್ಷುಭ್ಯನ್ತಮಿವ ಸಾಗರಮ್.

ಅಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೈಃ without delight, ಇನ್ದ್ರಿಯೈಃ with senses, ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಾಪಕರ್ಶಿತಮ್ emaciated with sorrow and suffering, ವ್ಯಥಿತಾಕುಲಚೇತಸಮ್ with an agitated and troubled mind, ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ತಮ್ breathing heavily, ಊರ್ಮಿಮಾಲಿನಮ್ crowned with a row of waves, ಅಕ್ಷೋಭ್ಯಮ್ unshakable, ಕ್ಷುಭ್ಯನ್ತಮ್ shaking, ಸಾಗರಮ್ ಇವ like a sea, ಉಪಪ್ಲುತಮ್ covered (eclipsed), ಆದಿತ್ಯಮ್ ಇವ like the Sun, ಉಕ್ತಾನೃತಮ್ uttering falsehood, ಋಷಿಂ ಯಥಾ like an ascetic, ತಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜಮ್ to that maharaja (Dasaratha).

Maharaja (Dasaratha) with his senses dulled had become emaciated due to sorrow and suffering. With an agitated and troubled mind, he was breathing heavily. Although unshakable, he looked agitated like an ocean with successive rows of waves, like the Sun in eclipse, like an ascetic who has uttered falsehood.
ಅಚಿನ್ತ್ಯಕಲ್ಪಂ ಹಿ ಪಿತುಸ್ತಂ ಶೋಕಮುಪಧಾರಯನ್.

ಬಭೂವ ಸಂರಬ್ಧತರ ಸ್ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ಪರ್ವಣಿ৷৷2.18.7৷৷


ಅಚಿನ್ತ್ಯಕಲ್ಪಮ್ beyond imagination, ನೃಪತೇಃ king's,ತಂ ಶೋಕಮ್ such sorrow, ಉಪಧಾರಯನ್ reflecting, ಪರ್ವಣಿ on full-moon day, ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ like an ocean, ಸಂರಬ್ಧತರಃ highly perturbed ಬಭೂವ became.

The more Rama reflected on the incomprehensible sorrow of the king, the more he became perturbed like an ocean on the new Moon day.
ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ ಚ ತದಾ ರಾಮಃ ಪಿತೃಹಿತೇ ರತಃ.

ಕಿಂ ಸ್ವಿದದ್ಯೈವ ನೃಪತಿರ್ನ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಭಿನನ್ದತಿ৷৷2.18.8৷৷


ಪಿತೃಹಿತೇ ರತಃ devoted to the well-being of his father, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ reflected, ಅದ್ಯೈವ today only, ನೃಪತಿಃ the king, ಕಿಂ ಸ್ವಿತ್ why is it, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಭಿನನ್ದತಿ not reciprocating my
greeting.

Devoted to his father's well-being, Rama reflected, Why does not father reciprocate my greeting (like on other days)?
ಅನ್ಯದಾ ಮಾಂ ಪಿತಾ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕುಪಿತೋಪಿ ಪ್ರಸೀದತಿ.

ತಸ್ಯ ಮಾಮದ್ಯ ಸಂಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಿಮಾಯಾಸಃ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ৷৷2.18.9৷৷


ಅನ್ಯದಾ in other times, ಪಿತಾ father, ಕುಪಿತೋಪಿ even though angry (displeased), ಮಾಮ್ me, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ on seeing, ಪ್ರಸೀದತಿ feels pleased, ತಸ್ಯ for him, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಸಂಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಕಿಂ why ಆಯಾಸಃ sorrow, ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ caused.

On other occasions even though angry he would feel pleased. But today why does he feel sad even after seeing me?
ಸ ದೀನ ಇವ ಶೋಕಾರ್ತೋ ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನದ್ಯುತಿಃ.

ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯೈವ ರಾಮೋ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.18.10৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ದೀನ ಇವ like a wretch, ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಃ tormented with grief, ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನದ್ಯುತಿಃ with a sorrowful countenance, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯೈವ having made salutations, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

With a sorrowful countenance Rama made salutation to Kaikeyi and said like a wretch tormented with grief:
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ಮಯಾ ನಾಪರಾದ್ಧಮಜ್ಞಾನಾದ್ಯೇನ ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ.

ಕುಪಿತಸ್ತನ್ಮಮಾಚಕ್ಷ್ವ ತ್ವಂ ಚೈವೈನಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದಯ৷৷2.18.11৷৷


ಮಯಾ by me, ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ unknowingly, ನಾಪರಾದ್ಧಮ್ ಕಞ್ಚಿತ್ have I committed any offence, ಯೇನ why, ಪಿತಾ father, ಮೇ with me, ಕುಪಿತಃ angry, ತತ್ that, ಮಮ to me, ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ tell, ತ್ವಮೇವ you alone, ಏನಮ್ him, ಪ್ರಸಾದಯ propitiate.

Have I committed any offence unknowingly? Please tell me why my father is angry with me. You alone can pacify him.
ಅಪ್ರಸನ್ನಮನಾಃ ಕಿನ್ನು ಸದಾ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿ ವತ್ಸಲಃ.

ವಿವರ್ಣವದನೋ ದೀನೋ ನ ಹಿ ಮಾಮಭಿಭಾಷತೇ৷৷2.18.12৷৷


ಸದಾ always, ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿ to me, ವತ್ಸಲಃ affectionate, ಅಪ್ರಸನ್ನಮನಾಃ ಕಿಂ ನು why does he look displeased?, ವಿವರ್ಣವದನಃ of pale countenance, ದೀನಃ wretched, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ ಹಿ does not speak?

Father has always been affectionate to me but today why is he in a dejected mood? Why does his countenance look pale and wretched? Why does he not speak to me?
ಶರೀರೋ ಮಾನಸೋ ವಾಪಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿದೇನಂ ನ ಬಾಧತೇ.

ಸನ್ತಾಪೋವಾಭಿತಾಪೋ ವಾ ದುರ್ಲಭಂ ಹಿ ಸದಾ ಸುಖಮ್৷৷2.18.13৷৷


ಶಾರೀರಃ relating to the body, ಸಂತಾಪೋ ವಾಪಿ some ailment, ಮಾನಸಃ (relating to) mind, ಅಭಿತಾಪೋ ವಾ
great distress, ಏನಮ್ him, ನ ಬಾಧತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ does not trouble him, ಸದಾ always, ಸುಖಮ್ happiness, ದುರ್ಲಭಂ ಹಿ rare indeed.

Is he suffering from any physical ailment or mental agony? It is affliction of either the body or the mind. (For) perpetual happiness is indeed rare.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದ್ಭರತೇ ಕುಮಾರೇ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನೇ.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇ ವಾ ಮಹಾಸತ್ತ್ವೇ ಮಾತ್ರೂಣಾಂ ವಾ ಮಮಾಶುಭಮ್৷৷2.18.14৷৷


ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿನೇ with a pleasing appearance, ಭರತೇ for Bharata, ಮಹಾಸತ್ತ್ವೇ possessing great strength, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇ with regard to Satrughna, ಮಮ my, ಮಾತ್ರೂಣಾಂ ವಾ relating to mothers, ಕಿಂಚಿತ್ any, ಅಶುಭಮ್ misfortune, ನ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ did not happen, (I hope)

Has any misfortune befallen the handsome Bharata or the mighty Satrughna or any of my mothers?
ಅತೋಷಯನ್ಮಹಾರಾಜಮಕುರ್ವನ್ವಾ ಪಿತುರ್ವಚಃ.

ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಪಿ ನೇಚ್ಛೇಯಂ ಜೀವಿತುಂ ಕುಪಿತೇ ನೃಪೇ৷৷2.18.15৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜಮ್ to the maharaja (Dasaratha), ಅತೋಷಯನ್ displeased, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವಚಃ words, ಅಕುರ್ವನ್ disobeying, ನೃಪೇ ಕುಪಿತೇ when the king has become angry, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಪಿ even for a moment, ಜೀವಿತುಮ್ to live, ನೇಚ್ಛೇಯಮ್ do not wish.

If I have (ever) displeased the maharaja, my father or disobeyed his command which has angered him, I do not wish to live for a moment৷৷
ಯತೋಮೂಲಂ ನರಃ ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ಪ್ರಾದುರ್ಭಾವಮಿಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಕಥಂ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನವರ್ತೇತ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷೇ ಸತಿ ದೈವತೇ৷৷2.18.16৷৷


ನರಃ a man, ಇಹ in this world, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his own, ಪ್ರಾದುರ್ಭಾವಮ್ coming into existence, ಯತೋ ಮೂಲಮ್ source of his origin (birth), ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ sees, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷೇ in a visible, ದೈವತೇ god, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ in him (father), ಸತಿ exists, ಕಥಮ್ how, ನ ವರ್ತೇತ does not conduct.

How can a man who owes his origin (birth) in this world to him (father) who still exists as a visible god not conduct himself (as per his wish)?
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಪರುಷಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಭಿಮಾನಾತ್ಪತಿತಾ ಮಮ.

ಉಕ್ತೋ ಭವತ್ಯಾ ಕೋಪೇನ ಯತ್ರಾಸ್ಯ ಲುಲಿತಂ ಮನಃ৷৷2.18.17৷৷


ಮಮ ಪಿತಾ my father, ತೇ your, ಅಭಿಮಾನಾತ್ because of self-respect, ಭವತ್ಯಾ by you, ಕೋಪೇನ out of anger, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ anything, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ ಉಕ್ತಃ has said?, ಯತ್ರ (ಯೇನ) due to which, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಮನಃ mind, ಲುಲಿತಮ್ has been shaken.

Have you said anything harsh to my father out of anger or (injured) self-respect for which his mind has been shaken?
ಏತದಾಚಕ್ಷ್ವ ಮೇ ದೇವಿ ತತ್ತ್ವೇನ ಪರಿಪೃಚ್ಛತಃ.

ಕಿಂ ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮಪೂರ್ವೋಯಂ ವಿಕಾರೋ ಮನುಜಾಧಿಪೇ৷৷2.18.18৷৷


ದೇವಿ O queen, ಪರಿಪೃಚ್ಛತ: am repeatedly asking, ಮೇ to me, ಏತತ್ this matter, ತತ್ತ್ವೇನ truly, ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ tell, ಮನುಜಾಧಿಪೇ in the king, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಅಪೂರ್ವ: ವಿಕಾರ: unprecedented change, ಕಿಂ ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ for what reason.

O Devi! I am repeatedly asking you the cause of this unprecedented change in the king please tell me the truth.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಾ ತು ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ರಾಘವೇಣ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಉವಾಚೇದಂ ಸುನಿರ್ಲಜ್ಜಾ ಧೃಷ್ಟಮಾತ್ಮಹಿತಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.18.19৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ magnanimous, ರಾಘವೇಣ by the scion of the Raghus (Rama), ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾ spoken, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಸುನಿರ್ಲಜ್ಜಾ without any sense of shame, ಧೃಷ್ಟಮ್ impudent, ಆತ್ಮಹಿತಮ್ in her own interest, ಇದಂ ವಚ: these words, ಉವಾಚ said.

When Kaikeyi was thus asked by the magnanimous scion of the Raghus (Rama) she
uttered unashamed these impudent words in her own interest.
ನ ರಾಜಾ ಕುಪಿತೋ ರಾಮ! ವ್ಯಸನಂ ನಾಸ್ಯ ಕಿಞ್ಚನ.

ಕಿಞ್ಚಿನ್ಮನೋಗತಂತ್ವಸ್ಯ ತ್ವದ್ಭಯಾನ್ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ৷৷2.18.20৷৷


ರಾಮ! Rama, ರಾಜಾ king, ನ ಕುಪಿತ: is not angry, ಅಸ್ಯ for him, ಕಿಞ್ಚನ not even a little, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ misfortune, ನ did not befall, ತು but, ಅಸ್ಯ for him, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ some issue, ಮನೋಗತಮ್ in mind, ತ್ವದ್ಭಯಾತ್ afraid of you, ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ does not speak.

O Rama, the king is neither angry, nor has any misforturne befallen him. But out of fear for you he is not able to speak out what he has in mind.
ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ತ್ವಾಮಪ್ರಿಯಂ ವಕ್ತುಂ ವಾಣೀ ನಾಸ್ಯೋಪವರ್ತತೇ.

ತದವಶ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಯದನೇನಾಶ್ರುತಂ ಮಮ৷৷2.18.21৷৷


ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved, ತ್ವಾಮ್ to you, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ unpleasant, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to say, ಅಸ್ಯ for him, ವಾಣೀ goddess of speech, ನೋಪವರ್ತತೇ does not permit, ಅನೇನ by him, ಯತ್ which, ಮಮ to me, ಆಶ್ರುತಮ್ has been promised, ತತ್ that, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಅವಶ್ಯಮ್ definitely, ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ fit to be done.

The goddess of speech does not permit him to say an unpleasant thing to you for you are his beloved son. So you must fulfil the promise he has made to me.
ಏಷ ಮಹ್ಯಂ ವರಂ ದತ್ತ್ವಾ ಪುರಾ ಮಾಮಭಿಪೂಜ್ಯ ಚ.

ಸ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತಪ್ಯತೇ ರಾಜಾ ಯಥಾನ್ಯಃ ಪ್ರಾಕೃತಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷2.18.22৷৷


ಸ: he, ಏಷ: ರಾಜಾ this king, ಪುರಾ earlier, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅಭಿಪೂಜ್ಯ ಚ having honoured, (ಮಹ್ಯಂ to me) ವರಮ್ boons, ದತ್ತ್ವಾ having bestowed, ಅನ್ಯ: other, ಪ್ರಾಕೃತ: common man, ಯಥಾ as, ತಥಾ like that, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತಪ್ಯತೇ repenting.

In the past the king had honoured me with (two) boons. Now like any other common man he is repenting (for the same).
ಅತಿಸೃಜ್ಯ ದದಾನೀತಿ ವರಂ ಮಮ ವಿಶಾಂಪತಿಃ.

ಸ ನಿರರ್ಥಂ ಗತಜಲೇ ಸೇತುಂ ಬನ್ಧಿತುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.18.23৷৷


ಸ: ವಿಶಾಂಪತಿ that king, ದದಾನಿ ಇತಿ saying 'I shall give you', ಮಮ to me, ವರಮ್ two boons, ಅತಿಸೃಜ್ಯ having bestowed, ಗತಜಲೇ at a place where the water has drained, ಸೇತುಮ್ dam, ನಿರರ್ಥಮ್ in vain, ಬನ್ಧಿತುಮ್ to construct, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ wishes.

The king bestowed on me boons saying, 'I shall grant you two boons'. But now he wishes in vain to build a dam when the water has run down.
ಧರ್ಮಮೂಲಮಿದಂ ರಾಮ! ವಿದಿತಂ ಚ ಸತಾಮಪಿ.

ತತ್ಸತ್ಯಂ ನ ತ್ಯಜೇದ್ರಾಜಾ ಕುಪಿತಸ್ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.18.24৷৷


ರಾಮ! O Rama, ಇದಮ್ this (truth), ಧರ್ಮಮೂಲಮ್ is the basis of righteousness, ಸತಾಮಪಿ to the virtuous also, ವಿದಿತಮ್ is made known thus, ಕುಪಿತ: being angry, ರಾಜಾ king, ತತ್ ಸತ್ಯಮ್ that truth, ಯಥಾ as to how, ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ on your account, ನ ತ್ಯಜೇತ್ may not abandon.

O Rama, this (truth) is the basis of righteousness. The virtuous also know this. The king being angry (with me), should not abandon the truth for your sake.
ಯದಿ ತದ್ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ ರಾಜಾ ಶುಭಂ ವಾ ಯದಿ ವಾಶುಭಮ್.

ಕರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ತತಸ್ಸರ್ವಮಾಖ್ಯಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಪುನಸ್ತ್ವಹಮ್৷৷2.18.25৷৷


ಶುಭಂ ವಾ be it auspicious, ಅಶುಭಂ ಯದಿ ವಾ or inauspicious, ತತ್ that truth, ರಾಜಾ king, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ ಯದಿ if shall tell (you), ಕರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ (ಯದಾ) you will fulfil, ಅಹಂ ಪುನಸ್ತು I again, ತತ: after that, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಆಖ್ಯಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ shall relate.

If you fulfil whatever the king says, pleasant or unpleasant, I shall relate to you everything.
ಯದಿ ತ್ವಭಿಹಿತಂ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ತ್ವಯಿ ತನ್ನ ವಿಪತ್ಸ್ಯತೇ.

ತತೋಹಮಭಿಧಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ನ ಹ್ಯೇಷ ತ್ವಯಿ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.18.26৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ಅಭಿಹಿತಮ್ told, ತತ್ that, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ನ ವಿಪತ್ಸ್ಯತೇ will not go in vain, ತತ: then, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಭಿಧಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall speak, ಏಷ: the king, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ನ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ ಹಿ will not tell.

If you do not transgress the word given by the king I shall tell you everything. The king on his own will not tell you.
ಏತತ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಸಮುದಾಹೃತಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ವ್ಯಥಿತೋ ರಾಮಸ್ತಾಂ ದೇವೀಂ ನೃಪಸನ್ನಿಧೌ৷৷2.18.27৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಸಮುದಾಹೃತಮ್ uttered, ಏತತ್ this, ವಚನಮ್ word, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ರಾಮ: Rama, ವ್ಯಥಿತ: depressed, ನೃಪಸನ್ನಿಧೌ in the presence of the king, ತಾಂ ದೇವೀಂ to that lady, ಉವಾಚ said.

Very much depressed on hearing the words of Kaikeyi, Rama thus said to her in the presence of the king:
ಅಹೋ ಧಿಙ್ನಾರ್ಹಸೇ ದೇವಿ ವಕ್ತುಂ ಮಾಮೀದೃಶಂ ವಚಃ.

ಅಹಂ ಹಿ ವಚನಾದ್ರಾಜ್ಞಃ ಪತೇಯಮಪಿ ಪಾವಕೇ৷৷2.18.28৷৷

ಭಕ್ಷಯೇಯಂ ವಿಷಂ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಂ ಮಜ್ಜೇಯಮಪಿ ಚಾರ್ಣವೇ.

ನಿಯುಕ್ತೋ ಗುರುಣಾ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ನೃಪೇಣ ಚ ಹಿತೇನ ಚ৷৷2.18.29৷৷


ದೇವೀ O! devi, ಅಹೋ alas, ಧಿಕ್ what a pity, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಈದೃಶಮ್ such, ವಚ: words, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to speak, ನಾರ್ಹಸೇ it does not behove you, ಹಿ because, ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಜ್ಞ: king's, ವಚನಾತ್ on the word, ಪಾವಕೇಪಿ even in fire, ಪತೇಯಮ್ will jump, ನೃಪೇಣ by the king, ಹಿತೇನ ಚ who desires my welfare, ಗುರುಣಾ by the gurus, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ನಿಯುಕ್ತ: ordered, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಂ ವಿಷಮ್ deadly poison, ಭಕ್ಷಯೇಯಮ್ will drink, ಅಪಿ ಚ and also, ಅರ್ಣವೇ in the ocean, ಮಜ್ಜೇಯಮ್ shall get drowned.

Alas, what a pity, O queen, it does not behove you to speak to me such words. I can jump into fire. Since he is my father, preceptor and well-wisher, I shall consume
deadly poison or even get drowned in the sea if he so commands.
ತದ್ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ವಚನಂ ದೇವಿ ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ಯದಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿತಮ್.

ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ ಪ್ರತಿಜಾನೇ ಚ ರಾಮೋ ದ್ವಿರ್ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ৷৷2.18.30৷৷


ತತ್ hence, ದೇವಿ O Devi! ರಾಜ್ಞಃ for the king, ಯತ್ whatever, ಅಭಿಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿತಮ್ is his desire, ವಚನಮ್ in words, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell, ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ I shall carry out, ಪ್ರತಿಜಾನೇ ಚ I promise, ರಾಮಾ Rama, ದ್ವಿ two times, ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ will not utter.

Hence tell me, O Devi! Whatever be the desire of the king: I promise I shall carry out, Rama does not say two things (does not go back on his word).
ತಮಾರ್ಜವಸಮಾಯುಕ್ತಮನಾರ್ಯಾ ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ರಾಮಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ವಚನಂ ಭೃಶದಾರುಣಮ್৷৷2.18.31৷৷


ಅನಾರ್ಯಾ ignoble, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಆರ್ಜವಸಮಾಯುಕ್ತಂ devoted to rectitude of conduct, ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಮ್ truthful, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ addressing that Rama, ಭೃಶದಾರುಣಮ್ extremely cruel, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಉವಾಚ said.

To Rama who was devoted to truth and to rectitude of conduct the ignobale Kaikeyi said:
ಪುರಾ ದೈವಾಸುರೇ ಯುದ್ಧೇ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ತೇ ಮಮ ರಾಘವ.

ರಕ್ಷಿತೇನ ವರೌ ದತ್ತೌ ಸಶಲ್ಯೇನ ಮಹಾರಣೇ৷৷2.18.32৷৷


ರಾಘವ O (Rama) descendant of Raghu, ಪುರಾ in the past, ದೈವಾಸುರೇ ಯುದ್ಧೇ in the war between gods and demons, ಮಹಾರಣೇ great war, ಸಶಲ್ಯೇನ wounded by shafts, ರಕ್ಷಿತೇನ protected (by me), ತೇ ಪಿತ್ರಾ by your father, ಮಮ to me, ವರೌ two boons, ದತ್ತೌ granted.

O descendant of Raghu! in the great war between gods and demons in the past your father had granted me two boons for protecting him when he was wounded by a shaft.
ತತ್ರ ಮೇ ಯಾಚಿತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಭರತಸ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್.

ಗಮನಂ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ ತವ ಚಾದ್ಯೈವ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.18.33৷৷


ರಾಘವ (Rama) scion of the Raghus, ತತ್ರ there (so), ರಾಜಾ the king, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ consecration, ಅದ್ಯೈವ today itself, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ to Dandaka forest, ತವ your, ಗಮನಮ್ departure, ಯಾಚಿತಃ has been asked.

O scion of the Raghus, hence I have asked the king for consecration of Bharata and your departure to Dandaka forest today itself.
ಯದಿ ಸತ್ಯಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಂ ತ್ವಂ ಪಿತರಂ ಕರ್ತುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ.

ಆತ್ಮಾನಂ ಚ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ! ಮಮ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಿದಂ ಶೃಣು৷৷2.18.34৷৷


ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ O best among men, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪಿತರಮ್ your father, ಆತ್ಮಾನಂ ಚ yourself as well, ಸತ್ಯಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಮ್ truthful to promise, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to make, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ ಯದಿ if you want, ಮಮ my, ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಶೃಣು listen.

O the best of men! if you want to be true to the word given by you and your father, listen to what I say.
ಸನ್ನಿದೇಶೇ ಪಿತುಸ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಯಥಾ ತೇನ ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರುತಮ್.

ತ್ವಯಾರಣ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರವೇಷ್ಟವ್ಯಂ ನವ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ಪಞ್ಚ ಚ৷৷2.18.35৷৷


ಪಿತು: father's, ಸನ್ನಿದೇಶೇ by the command, ತಿಷ್ಠ abide by, ತೇನ by him, ಯಥಾ in this way, ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರುತಮ್ promised, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ನವ ಪಂಚ ಚ nine and five (fourteen), ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ಅರಣ್ಯಮ್ forest, ಪ್ರವೇಷ್ಟವ್ಯಮ್ enter (and stay).

Abide by your father's command. As promised by him go to the forest for fourteen years.
ಭರತಸ್ತ್ವಭಿಷಿಚ್ಯೇತ ಯದೇತದಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್.

ತ್ವದರ್ಥೇ ವಿಹಿತಂ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ತೇನ ಸರ್ವೇಣ ರಾಘವ!৷৷2.18.36৷৷


ರಾಘವ O son of the Raghu dynasty (Rama), ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ತ್ವದರ್ಥೇ for your sake, ಯತ್ which, ಏತತ್ this, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ installation, ವಿಹಿತಮ್ has been arranged, ತೇನ ಸರ್ವೇಣ with all these (preparations), ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅಭಿಷಿಚ್ಯೇತ shall be consecrated.

Bharata shall be consecrated, O descendant of the Raghu dynasty! with all these preparations made by the king to install you.
ಸಪ್ತ ಸಪ್ತ ಚ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.

ಅಭಿಷೇಕಮಿಮಂ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಜಟಾಜಿನಧರೋ ವಸ৷৷2.18.37৷৷


ಇಮಮ್ ಅಭಿಷೇಕಮ್ this consecration, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ having forsaken, ಜಟಾಜಿನಧರ: with matted hair and
deer-skin, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ taking refuge in Dandaka forest, ಸಪ್ತ ಸಪ್ತ ಚ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ seven and seven (fourteen) years, ವಸ live.

Forsake this consecration, wear matted locks and deer-skin and take refuge in Dandaka forest for fourteen years.
ಭರತಃ ಕೋಸಲಪುರೇ ಪ್ರಶಾಸ್ತು ವಸುಧಾಮಿಮಾಮ್.

ನಾನಾರತ್ನ ಸಮಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಂ ಸವಾಜಿರಥಕುಞ್ಜರಾಮ್৷৷2.18.38৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಕೋಶಲಪುರೇ in Ayodhya, the capital of Kosala country, ನಾನಾರತ್ನ ಸಮಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಮ್ abounding in different kinds of gems, ಸವಾಜಿರಥಕುಞ್ಜರಾಮ್ with horses, chariots and elephants, ಇಮಾಂ ವಸುಧಾಮ್ this earth, ಪ್ರಶಾಸ್ತು let (him) rule.

Let Bharata live in Ayodhya, the capital of Kosala and rule this kingdom rich in gems of different kinds in horses, chariots and elephants.
ಏತೇನ ತ್ವಾಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೋಯಂ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯೇನ ಸಮಾಪ್ಲುತಃ.

ಶೋಕಸಂಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟ ವದನೋ ನ ಶಕ್ನೋತಿ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತುಮ್৷৷2.18.39৷৷


ಏತೇನ therefore, ಅಯಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಃ this king, ಕಾರುಣ್ಯೇನ on account of compassion, ಸಮಾಪ್ಲುತಃ was overwhelmed, ಶೋಕಸಂಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟ ವದನಃ with a face fortured by tears, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತುಮ್ to see, ನ ಶಕ್ನೋತಿ not able.

This is why the king with his face tortured by tears and (his heart) overwhelmed with compassion for you, is unable to look at you.
ಏತತ್ಕುರು ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ವಚನಂ ರಘುನನ್ದನ.

ಸತ್ಯೇನ ಮಹತಾ ರಾಮ ತಾರಯಸ್ವ ನರೇಶ್ವರಮ್৷৷2.18.40৷৷


ರಘುನನ್ದನ O Joy of the Raghus, O son of the Raghu race!, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king's, ಏತತ್ ವಚನಮ್ this word of promise, ಕುರು carry out, ರಾಮ Rama, ಮಹತಾ ಸತ್ಯೇನ with your great truthfulness, ನರೇಶ್ವರಮ್ the king, ತಾರಯಸ್ವ save.

O Joy of the Raghus, O son of the Raghu race, carry out the word of promise given by the king and save him by helping him keep the truth which is great.
ಇತೀವ ತಸ್ಯಾಂ ಪರುಷಂ ವದನ್ತ್ಯಾಂ

ನ ಚೈವ ರಾಮಃ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಶೋಕಮ್.

ಪ್ರವಿವ್ಯಥೇ ಚಾಪಿ ಮಹಾನುಭಾವೋ

ರಾಜಾ ತು ಪುತ್ರವ್ಯಸನಾಭಿತಪ್ತಃ৷৷2.18.41৷৷


ಇತೀವ in this way, ತಸ್ಯಾಮ್ she (Kaikeyi), ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh words, ವದನ್ತ್ಯಾಮ್ was speaking, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಶೋಕಮ್ sorrow, ನಚೈವ ಪ್ರವಿದೇಶ did not enter, ಮಹಾನುಭಾವಃ dignified, ರಾಜಾ ತು king, ಪುತ್ರವ್ಯಸನಾಭಿತಪ್ತಃ afflicted with the son's calamity, ಪ್ರವಿವ್ಯಥೇ was greatly pained.

Even though she was speaking harsh words, Rama did not come to grief. But the magnanimous king was greatly afflicted to see the calamity on his son.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟಾದಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the eighteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the oly Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
