Sloka & Translation

[Dasaratha commends to the assembly of elders and counsellors for installation of Rama as Prince Regent-- Assembly approves the proposal of Dasaratha with delight describing the virtues of Rama in support of their approval.]

ತತಃ ಪರಿಷದಂ ಸರ್ವಾಮಾಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ ವಸುಧಾಧಿಪಃ.

ಹಿತಮುದ್ಧರ್ಷಣಂ ಚೈವಮುವಾಚ ಪ್ರಥಿತಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.2.1৷৷


ತತ: thereafter, ವಸುಧಾಧಿಪ: lord of the earth (king Dasaratha), ಸರ್ವಾಮ್ entire, ಪರಿಷದಮ್ assembly, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ having invited, ಹಿತಮ್ aimed at their welfare, ಉರ್ದ್ಧರ್ಷಣಮ್ thrilling, ಪ್ರಥಿತಮ್ pleasing, ವಚ: words, ಏವಂ in this manner, ಉವಾಚ spoke.

Thereafter, the lord of the earth (king Dasaratha) addressed the entire assembly of invitees. He spoke these pleasing words aimed at their welfare which thrilled and delighted the hearts (of the assembled kings):
ದುನ್ದುಭಿಸ್ವನಕಲ್ಪೇನ ಗಮ್ಭೀರೇಣಾನುನಾದಿನಾ.

ಸ್ವರೇಣ ಮಹತಾ ರಾಜಾ ಜೀಮೂತ ಇವ ನಾದಯನ್৷৷2.2.2৷৷

ರಾಜಲಕ್ಷಣಯುಕ್ತೇನ ಕಾನ್ತೇನಾನುಪಮೇನ ಚ.

ಉವಾಚ ರಸಯುಕ್ತೇನ ಸ್ವರೇಣ ನೃಪತಿರ್ನೃಪಾನ್৷৷2.2.3৷৷


ನೃಪತಿ: lord of men, ರಾಜಾ king (Dasaratha), ದುನ್ದುಭಿಸ್ವನಕಲ್ಪೇನ resonant as the sound of a kettledrum, ಗಮ್ಭೀರೇಣ with a deep (voice), ಅನುನಾದಿನಾ echoing, ಮಹತಾ great, ಸ್ವರೇಣ with voice, ಜೀಮೂತ: ಇವ like the cloud, ನಾದಯನ್ thundering, ರಾಜಲಕ್ಷಣಯುಕ್ತೇನ having traits of royalty, ಕಾನ್ತೇನ
with an attractive voice, ಅನುಪಮೇನ ಚ and with an incomparable, ರಸಯುಕ್ತೇನ delightful, ಸ್ವರೇಣ with voice, ನೃಪಾನ್ addressing kings, ಉವಾಚ said.

Lord of men (king Dasaratha) addressed the feudatory kings with words deep, resonant, loud like the kettledrum or the rumbling cloud, in a delightful, incomparable and attractive voice that carried all the dignity of royalty:
ವಿದಿತಂ ಭವತಾಮೇತದ್ಯಥಾ ಮೇ ರಾಜ್ಯಮುತ್ತಮಮ್.

ಪೂರ್ವಕೈರ್ಮಮ ರಾಜೇನ್ದ್ರೈಸ್ಸುತವತ್ಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಮ್৷৷2.2.4৷৷


ಮೇ my, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ greatest, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಮಮ my, ಪೂರ್ವಕೈ: by the predecessors, ರಾಜೇನ್ದ್ರೈ: by great kings, ಸುತವತ್ like children, ಯಥಾ like, ಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಮ್ were ruled, ಏತತ್ all this, ಭವತಾಮ್ to you, ವಿದಿತಮ್ is well-known.

It is well-known to all of you that people of this greatest kingdom were ruled by my predecessors who were great kings, who looked after the subjects as though they were their own children.
ಸೋಹಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಭಿ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೈರ್ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೈಃ ಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಮ್.

ಶ್ರೇಯಸಾ ಯೋಕ್ತುಕಾಮೋಸ್ಮಿ ಸುಖಾರ್ಹಮಖಿಲಂ ಜಗತ್৷৷2.2.5৷৷


ಸ: such, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಭಿ: belonging to the Ikshvaku race, ಸರ್ವೈ: by all, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೈ: by kings, ಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಮ್ ruled, ಸುಖಾರ್ಹಮ್ worthy of happiness, ಅಖಿಲಮ್ entire, ಜಗತ್ world, ಶ್ರೇಯಸಾ with welfare, ಯೋಕ್ತುಕಾಮ: ಅಸ್ಮಿ desire to accomplish.

I desire to accomplish the welfare of this entire world which deserves the happiness brought about by the rule of all the Ikshvaku kings.
ಮಯಾಪ್ಯಾಚರಿತಂ ಪೂರ್ವೈಃ ಪನ್ಥಾನಮನುಗಚ್ಛತಾ.

ಪ್ರಜಾ ನಿತ್ಯಮನಿದ್ರೇಣ ಯಥಾಶಕ್ತ್ಯಭಿರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.2.6৷৷


ಪೂರ್ವೈ: by my predecessors, ಆಚರಿತಮ್ trodden, ಪನ್ಥಾನಮ್ path, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛತಾ while following,
ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಅನಿದ್ರೇಣ vigilant, ಮಯಾಪಿ by me also, ಪ್ರಜಾ: people, ಯಥಾಶಕ್ತಿ to the best of my ability, ಅಭಿರಕ್ಷಿತಾ: were protected.

Following the path of my forefathers I protected the people to the best of my ability by being ever vigilant.
ಇದಂ ಶರೀರಂ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಸ್ಯ ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಚರತಾ ಹಿತಮ್.

ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಸ್ಯಾತಪತ್ರಸ್ಯಚ್ಛಾಯಾಯಾಂ ಜರಿತಂ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.2.7৷৷


ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಸ್ಯ of the entire, ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ world's, ಹಿತಮ್ welfare, ಚರತಾ observing, ಮಯಾ by me, ಇದಮ್ this, ಶರೀರಮ್ body, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಸ್ಯ white, ಆತಪತ್ರಸ್ಯ royal parasol's, ಛಾಯಾಯಾಮ್ under the shadow, ಜರಿತಮ್ attained old age.

My body has attained old age after ruling the entire world ensuring the welfare of the people under the shade of royal white parasol.
ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ವರ್ಷಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಬಹೂನ್ಯಾಯೂಂಷಿ ಜೀವತಃ.

ಜೀರ್ಣಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಶರೀರಸ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಿಮಭಿರೋಚಯೇ৷৷2.2.8৷৷


ಬಹೂನಿ several, ವರ್ಷಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ thousands of years, ಆಯೂಂಷಿ life-span, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having reached, ಜೀವತ: while living, ಜೀರ್ಣಸ್ಯ of the decayed, ಅಸ್ಯ ಶರೀರಸ್ಯ for this body, ವಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಿಮ್ rest, ಅಭಿರೋಚಯೇ I desired.

Having lived for thousands of years this body is now worn out due to old age and therefore I want rest.
ರಾಜಪ್ರಭಾವಜುಷ್ಟಾಂ ಹಿ ದುರ್ವಹಾಮಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯೈಃ.

ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತೋಸ್ಮಿ ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಗುರ್ವೀಂ ಧರ್ಮಧುರಂ ವಹನ್৷৷2.2.9৷৷


ರಾಜಪ್ರಭಾವಜುಷ್ಟಾಂ with royal qualities (might, courage etc.,), ಅಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯೈ: by those who have not controlled their senses, ದುರ್ವಹಾಮ್ difficult to sustain, ಗುರ್ವೀಮ್ heavy, ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ world's, ಧರ್ಮಧುರಮ್ burden of duty, ವಹನ್ carrying, ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತ: ಅಸ್ಮಿ I have become weary.

I am weary of carrying on the heavy burden of duty and find it difficult to sustain the rule of dharma. It can be shouldered by those who have royal qualities (of might, courage etc) and not by those who have not controlled their senses.
ಸೋಹಂ ವಿಶ್ರಮಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಪುತ್ರಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಜಾಹಿತೇ.

ಸನ್ನಿಕೃಷ್ಟಾನಿಮಾನ್ಸರ್ವಾನನುಮಾನ್ಯ ದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಾನ್৷৷2.2.10৷৷


ಸ: ಅಹಮ್ such as I am, ಸನ್ನಿಕೃಷ್ಟಾನ್ assembled, ಇಮಾನ್ these, ದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಾನ್ the best among (learned) brahmins, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಅನುಮಾನ್ಯ after convincing them, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ my son, ಪ್ರಜಾಹಿತೇ for the welfare of the people, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having consecrated, ವಿಶ್ರಮಮ್ rest, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ am desiring.

Therefore, after convincing all of you, the best of (learned) brahmins present here, I intend to take rest by installing my son to look after the welfare of the people.
ಅನುಜಾತೋ ಹಿ ಮಾಂ ಸರ್ವೈರ್ಗುಣೈರ್ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೋ ಮಮಾತ್ಮಜಃ.

ಪುರನ್ದರಸಮೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇ ರಾಮಃ ಪರಪುರಞ್ಜಯಃ৷৷2.2.11৷৷


ವೀರ್ಯೇ in prowess, ಪುರನ್ದರಸಮ: equal to Indra, ಪರಪುರಞ್ಜಯ: conqueror of enemy cities, ಮಮ my , ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠ: ಆತ್ಮಜ: eldest son, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಸರ್ವೈ: by all, ಗುಣೈ: virtues, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅನುಜಾತ: ಹಿ inherited indeed.

My eldest son Rama, inheriting every virtue of mine, is a conqueror of enemy cities and is equal to Indra in prowess.
ತಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಿವ ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಧರ್ಮಭೃತಾಂ ವರಮ್.

ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ ನಿಯೋಕ್ತಾಸ್ಮಿ ಪ್ರೀತಃ ಪುರುಷಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್৷৷2.2.12৷৷


ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ by the Pushya star, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ in conjunction, ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಿವ resembling moon, ಧರ್ಮಭೃತಾಮ್ among upholders of righteousness, ವರಮ್ best, ಪುರುಷಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್ foremost among men, ತಮ್ him (Rama), ಪ್ರೀತ: pleased, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ as heir-apparent, ನಿಯೋಕ್ತಾಸ್ಮಿ propose to install.

I propose to install him (Rama), foremost among upholders of righteousness and the best of men who resembles the Moon in brightness when in conjunction with Pushya star, as heir-apparent to the throne.
ಅನುರೂಪಸ್ಸ ವೈ ನಾಥೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀವಾನ್ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾಗ್ರಜಃ.

ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯಮಪಿ ನಾಥೇನ ಯೇನ ಸ್ಯಾನ್ನಾಥವತ್ತರಮ್৷৷2.2.13৷৷


ನಾಥೇನ as lord, ಯೇನ by whom, ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯಮಪಿ even the three worlds, ನಾಥವತ್ತರಮ್ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ will have better protector, ಸ: he, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀವಾನ್ a man possessing signs of greatness, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾಗ್ರಜ: elder brother of Lakshmana, ಅನುರೂಪ: befitting, ನಾಥ: ವೈ is the lord.

With him (Rama) as ruler, all the three worlds will also have a better protector.That elder brother of Lakshmana with signs of greatness is certainly the most befitting to rule this kingdom.
ಅನೇನ ಶ್ರೇಯಸಾ ಸದ್ಯಸ್ಸಂಯೋಜ್ಯೈವಮಿಮಾಂ ಮಹೀಮ್.

ಗತಕ್ಲೇಶೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸುತೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ ವೈ৷৷2.2.14৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ when such, ಸುತೇ son (Rama), ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಮಹೀಮ್ earth, ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ entrusting, ಅನೇನ ಶ್ರೇಯಸಾ to ensure the welfare of the world, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಸದ್ಯ: without any delay, ಸಂಯೋಜ್ಯ having united, ಗತಕ್ಲೇಶ: relieved of my anxieties, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall become.

I shall be relieved of my anxiety by entrusting the land (ruled by me) to my son (Rama) without any more delay and thus ensure the continued welfare of this world.
ಯದಿದಂ ಮೇನುರೂಪಾರ್ಥಂ ಮಯಾ ಸಾಧು ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಮ್.

ಭವನ್ತೋ ಮೇನುಮನ್ಯನ್ತಾಂ ಕಥಂ ವಾ ಕರವಾಣ್ಯಹಮ್৷৷2.2.15৷৷


ಮಯಾ by me, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಮ್ well thought-over, ಇದಮ್ this word, ಸಾಧು proper, ಮೇ my, ಅನುರೂಪಾರ್ಥಂ ಯದಿ if worthy of me, ಭವನ್ತ: you, ಮೇ to me, ಅನುಮನ್ಯನ್ತಾಮ್ your consent shall be given, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕಥಂ ವಾ how else, ಕರವಾಣಿ I shall do?

Although it (this decision) is personally favourable to me and I have decided after seeking good counsel, you should also give me your consent and tell me what I should do.
ಯದ್ಯಪ್ಯೇಷಾ ಮಮ ಪ್ರೀತಿರ್ಹಿತಮನ್ಯದ್ವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯತಾಮ್.

ಅನ್ಯಾ ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಚಿನ್ತಾ ಹಿ ವಿಮರ್ದಾಭ್ಯಧಿಕೋದಯಾ৷৷2.2.16৷৷


ಏಷಾ this, ಮಮ my, ಪ್ರೀತಿ: ಯದ್ಯಪಿ even though I like, ಅನ್ಯತ್ any alternative, ಹಿತಮ್ means of welfare, ವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯತಾಮ್ let it be thought over, ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಚಿನ್ತಾ opinion of those without partiality, ಅನ್ಯಾ alternative, ವಿಮರ್ದಾಭ್ಯಧಿಕೋದಯಾ deliberations may bring good.

Although this is what I would like to do, please suggest alternative ways of achieving the welfare (of this kingdom). Deliberations by the unbiased (on this issue) may bring good.
ಇತಿ ಬ್ರುವನ್ತಂ ಮುದಿತಾಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯನನ್ದನ್ನೃಪಾ ನೃಪಮ್.

ವೃಷ್ಟಿಮನ್ತಂ ಮಹಾಮೇಘಂ ನರ್ದನ್ತ ಇವ ಬರ್ಹಿಣಃ৷৷2.2.17৷৷


ಇತಿ thus, ಬ್ರುವನ್ತಮ್ speaking, ನೃಪಮ್ king Dasaratha, ನೃಪಾ: kings, ಮುದಿತಾ: delighted, ವೃಷ್ಟಿಮನ್ತಮ್ raining, ಮಹಾಮೇಘಮ್ thick cloud, ನರ್ದನ್ತ: making sounds, ಬರ್ಹಿಣ: ಇವ like peacocks, ಪ್ರತ್ಯನನ್ದನ್ acclaimed.

Having thus heard king Dasaratha speak, the kings acclaimed him with delight, like peacocks crying (in joy) to see thick clouds.
ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧೋನುನಾದೀ ಸಂಜಜ್ಞೇ ತತ್ರ ಹರ್ಷಸಮೀರಿತಃ.

ಜನೌಘೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟಸನ್ನಾದೋ ವಿಮಾನಂ ಕಮ್ಪಯನ್ನಿವ৷৷2.2.18৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧ: affectionate, ಅನುನಾದೀ echoing, ಹರ್ಷಸಮೀರಿತ: filled with pleasure, ಜನೌಘೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟಸನ್ನಾದ: sounds of rapturous cries of multitude of people, ವಿಮಾನಮ್ that palace, ಕಮ್ಪಯನ್ನಿವ seemed as if shaking, ಸಂಜಜ್ಞೇ emanated.

There emanated cries of love and joy from the multitude of people (conveying their approval) whose reverberation seemed to shake the palace.
ತಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥವಿದುಷೋ ಭಾವಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ಸರ್ವಶಃ.

ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾ ಜನಮುಖ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೈ ಸ್ಸಹ৷৷2.2.19৷৷

ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತ್ವಾ ತು ಸಮತಾಗತಬುದ್ಧಯಃ.

ಊಚುಶ್ಚ ಮನಸಾ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್৷৷2.2.20৷৷


ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾ: brahmins, ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೈ: ಸಹ along with the inhabitants of towns and villages, ಜನಮುಖ್ಯಾ: ಚ prominent men also, ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥವಿದುಷ: conversant with dharma (righteousness) and artha (state craft), ತಸ್ಯ his (Dasaratha's), ಭಾವಮ್ views, ಸರ್ವಶ: entirely, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having known, ಸಮೇತ್ಯ having joined together, ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತ್ವಾ having deliberated, ಮನಸಾ with mind, ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ having ascertained, ಸಮತಾಗತಬುದ್ಧಯ: unanimous in their thinking, ವೃದ್ಧಮ್ addressing the aged man (Dasaratha), ಊಚು: spoke.

Brahmins, kings and other prominent men, inhabitants of towns and villages having fully known the views of Dasaratha who was conversant with artha and dharma joined together and deliberated. They thought out well and having arrived at unanimity in their thinking thus addressed the aged king Dasaratha.
ಅನೇಕವರ್ಷಸಾಹಸ್ರೋ ವೃದ್ಧಸ್ತ್ವಮಸಿ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವ.

ಸ ರಾಮಂ ಯುವರಾಜಾನಮಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಿಸ್ವ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್৷৷2.2.21৷৷


ಪಾರ್ಥಿವ O mighty king! ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಅನೇಕವರ್ಷಸಾಹಸ್ರ: many thousands of years old, ವೃದ್ಧ: ಅಸಿ have become old, ಸ: such as you are, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್ as ruler of the earth, ಯುವರಾಜಾನಮ್ as prince regent, ಅಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಿಸ್ವ coronate him.

O mighty king!, you have grown many thousands of years old. Therefore, you should coronate Rama as prince regent of this kingdom.
ಇಚ್ಛಾಮೋ ಹಿ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಂ ರಘುವೀರಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್.

ಗಜೇನ ಮಹತಾಯಾನ್ತಂ ರಾಮಂ ಛತ್ರಾವೃತಾನನಮ್৷৷2.2.22৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಮ್ mighty-armed, ರಘುವೀರಮ್ hero among the Raghus, ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್ mighty, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಛತ್ರಾವೃತಾನನಮ್ his countenance shadowed by the royal parasol, ಮಹತಾ great, ಗಜೇನ on an elephant, ಯಾನ್ತಮ್ riding, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮ: ಹಿ are desiring.

We cherish to see the mighty-armed hero among the Raghus, Rama, riding on a majestic elephant, his countenance shadowed by the royal parasol.
ಇತಿ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಾ ತೇಷಾಂ ಮನಃಪ್ರಿಯಂ.

ಅಜಾನನ್ನಿವ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸುರಿದಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.2.23৷৷


ಇತಿ in this way, ತದ್ವಚನಮ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ರಾಜಾ the king, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಮನ: ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasing to their mind, ಅಜಾನನ್ನಿವ as if he did not know earlier, ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸು: with a wish to ascertain, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Having heard them king Dasaratha, pretending as though he was not aware of their heart's desire but was now wishing to ascertain it, spoke these words:
ಶ್ರುತ್ವೈವ ವಚನಂ ಯನ್ಮೇ ರಾಘವಂ ಪತಿಮಿಚ್ಛಥ.

ರಾಜಾನ ಸ್ಸಂಶಯೋಯಂ ಮೇ ಕಿಮಿದಂ ಬ್ರೂತ ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ৷৷2.2.24৷৷


ರಾಜಾನ: O kings!, ಮೇ my, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವೈವ soon after listening, ಯತ್ since, ರಾಘವಮ್ son of the Raghus (Rama), ಪತಿಮ್ as king, ಇಚ್ಛಥ wish, ಮೇ to me, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಸಂಶಯ: doubt, ತತ್ ಇದಮ್ this, ತತ್ತ್ವತ: truly, ಬ್ರೂತ you may tell.

O kings!, soon after listening to my words, all of you wish Rama to be king. (But) I doubt (in my mind) whether you have said it from your heart৷৷
ಕಥಂ ನು ಮಯಿ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಪೃಥಿವೀಮನುಶಾಸತಿ.

When the earth is being ruled righteously by me why indeed you intend to see my son as prince regent?
ತೇ ತಮೂಚುರ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೈಸ್ಸಹ.

ಬಹವೋ ನೃಪ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾ ಗುಣಾಃ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಸನ್ತಿ ತೇ৷৷2.2.26৷৷


ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೈ: ಸಹ along with inhabitants of towns and villages, ತೇ those (kings), ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ that magnanimous, ತಮ್ addressing him, ಊಚು: said, ನೃಪ O king, ತೇ your, ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ son's, ಬಹವ: many, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾ: auspicious, ಗುಣಾ: ಸನ್ತಿ are virtues indeed.

Those kings along with the inhabitants of towns and villages answered the magnanimous king: O king! your son, indeed has many auspicious and admirable virtues.
ಗುಣಾನ್ ಗುಣವತೋ ದೇವ ದೇವಕಲ್ಪಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ.

ಪ್ರಿಯಾನಾನನ್ದನಾನ್ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾನ್ಪ್ರವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮೋದ್ಯ ತಾನ್ ಶೃಣು৷৷2.2.27৷৷


ದೇವ O king!, ಗುಣವತ: of the man endowed with virtues, ದೇವಕಲ್ಪಸ್ಯ resembling devatas, ಧೀಮತ: sagcious Rama's, ಪ್ರಿಯಾನ್ dear, ಆನನ್ದನಾನ್ causing delight, ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾನ್ all, ತಾನ್ ಗುಣಾನ್ his virtues, ಅದ್ಯ now, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ: we shall speak, ಶೃಣು listen.

O king!, we shall now speak about those great virtues of the sagacious (Rama). Comparable to those of the gods, they are dear and a source of delight for every one. Please listen.
ದಿವ್ಯೈರ್ಗುಣೈಶ್ಶಕ್ರಸಮೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಭ್ಯೋಪಿ ಸರ್ವೇಭ್ಯೋ ಹ್ಯತಿರಿಕ್ತೋ ವಿಶಾಂಪತೇ৷৷2.2.28৷৷


ವಿಶಾಂಪತೇ O lord of the people (Dasaratha), ರಾಮ: Rama, ದಿವ್ಯೈ: by the divine, ಗುಣೈ: by virtues, ಶಕ್ರಸಮ: equal to Indra, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮ: one with proven valour, ಸರ್ವೇಭ್ಯೋಪಿ among all also, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಭ್ಯ: among the descendents of Iksvaku, ಅತಿರಿಕ್ತ: distinguished.

Lord of the people! Rama with his divine virtues is equal to Indra. He with his proven valour is exceptional among all the descendents of the Iksvakus.
ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸತ್ಪುರುಷೋ ಲೋಕೇ ಸತ್ಯಧರ್ಮಪರಾಯಣಃ.

ಸಾಕ್ಷಾದ್ರಾಮಾದ್ವಿನಿರ್ವೃತ್ತೋ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಸಹ৷৷2.2.29৷৷


ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಸತ್ಪುರುಷ: a venerable man, ಸತ್ಯಧರ್ಮಪರಾಯಣ: devoted to truth and righteousness, ರಾಮಾತ್ from Rama, ಧರ್ಮ: ಚ ಅಪಿ righteousness also, ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಸಹ along with prosperity, ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ directly, ವಿನಿರ್ವೃತ್ತ: flows.

Devoted to truth and righteousness Rama is the most venerable among men in this world. Even righteousness along with prosperity flows directly from Rama.
ಪ್ರಜಾಸುಖತ್ತ್ವೇ ಚನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ವಸುಧಾಯಾಃ ಕ್ಷಮಾಗುಣೈಃ.

ಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತೇಸ್ತುಲ್ಯೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾಚ್ಛಚೀಪತೇಃ৷৷2.2.30৷৷


ಪ್ರಜಾಸುಖತ್ತ್ವೇ in causing happiness to the people, ಚನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ of the Moon, ಕ್ಷಮಾಗುಣೈ: in the virtue of forbearance, ವಸುಧಾಯಾ: of the earth, ಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ by wisdom, ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತೇ: of Brihaspati, ವೀರ್ಯೇ in prowess, ಶಚೀಪತೇ: of Indra, ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ directly, ತುಲ್ಯ: equal.

He is equal to the Moon in causing happiness to the people, to the earth in forbearance, to Brihaspati in wisdom and to Indra in prowess.
ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧಶ್ಚ ಶೀಲವಾನನಸೂಯಕಃ.

ಕ್ಷಾನ್ತ ಸ್ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯಿತಾ ಶ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಣಃ ಕೃತಜ್ಞೋ ವಿಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.2.31৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ: knower of righteousness, ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧ: true to his vows, ಶೀಲವಾನ್ one with good character, ಅನಸೂಯಕ: free from envy, ಕ್ಷಾನ್ತ: one with forbearance, ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯಿತಾ one who
consoles others, ಶ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಣ: gentle, ಕೃತಜ್ಞ: grateful, ವಿಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: one who has conquered the senses.

Rama knows the ways of righteousness. He is true to his word and free from envy. He possesses a sound character with forbearance, gentleness and a sense of gratitude. With his senses under control, he is a source of consolation (in stressful
times).
ಮೃದುಶ್ಚ ಸ್ಥಿರಚಿತ್ತಶ್ಚ ಸದಾ ಭವ್ಯೋನಸೂಯಕಃ.

ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದೀ ಚ ಭೂತಾನಾಂ ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಚ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.2.32৷৷

ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಾನಾಂ ವೃದ್ಧಾನಾಂ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನಾಮುಪಾಸಿತಾ.

ತೇನಾಸ್ಯೇಹಾತುಲಾ ಕೀರ್ತಿರ್ಯಶಸ್ತೇಜಶ್ಚ ವರ್ಧತೇ৷৷2.2.33৷৷


ರಾಘವ: son of the Raghus (Rama), ಮೃದು: ಚ soft-spoken, ಸ್ಥಿರಚಿತ್ತ: ಚ steadfast, ಸದಾ always, ಭವ್ಯ: serene, ಅನಸೂಯಕ: free from envy, ಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ for living beings, ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದೀ pleasing ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಚ one who always speaks the truth, ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಾನಾಮ್ of those learned in a number of shastras, ವೃದ್ಧಾನಾಮ್ of elderly persons, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನಾಮ್ of brahmins, ಉಪಾಸಿತಾ serves, ತೇನ with these, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಅತುಲಾ incomparable, ಕೀರ್ತಿ: glory, ಯಶ: fame, ತೇಜಶ್ಚ splendour, ಇಹ in this world, ವರ್ಧತೇ growing.

This son of the Raghus (Rama) is soft-spoken, steadfast, always serene, truthful and free from envy. He is pleasing to all beings. He serves those elderly brahmins versed in many lores. With these virtues his incomparable glory, fame and splendour have steadily grown.
ದೇವಾಸುರಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ತ್ರೇಷು ವಿಶಾರದಃ.

ಸಮ್ಯಗ್ವಿದ್ಯಾವ್ರತಸ್ನಾತೋ ಯಥಾವತ್ಸಾಙ್ಗವೇದವಿತ್৷৷2.2.34৷৷


ದೇವಾಸುರಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ among devatas, asuras and men, ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ತ್ರೇಷು in wielding all kinds of weapons, ವಿಶಾರದ: expert, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ properly, ವಿದ್ಯಾವ್ರತಸ್ನಾತ: completed the vow of acquiring various branches of learning, ಯಥಾವತ್ duly, ಸಾಙ್ಗವೇದವಿತ್ has learnt the Vedas and their supplementary sciences.

He is an expert in wielding all kinds of weapons available to devas, asuras and men. He has achieved mastery over all sciences and has appropriately acquired knowledge of the Vedas and its ancillary sciences.
ಗಾನ್ಧರ್ವೇ ಚ ಭುವಿ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೋ ಬಭೂವ ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜಃ.

ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾಭಿಜನ ಸ್ಸಾಧುರದೀನಾತ್ಮಾ ಮಹಾಮತಿಃ৷৷2.2.35৷৷


ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜ: the elder brother of Bharata (Rama), ಗಾನ್ಧರ್ವೇ in music, ಭುವಿ on this earth, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ: ಬಭೂವ became greatest, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾಭಿಜನ: having a noble descent, ಸಾಧು: a pious man, ಅದೀನಾತ್ಮಾ with his mind free from meanness, ಮಹಾಮತಿ: possessing great intellect.

This elder brother of Bharata is the greatest exponent in music on earth. Pious, sagacious, free from meanness, he is of noble descent.
ದ್ವಿಜೈರಭಿವಿನೀತಶ್ಚ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೈರ್ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥನೈಪುಣೈಃ.

ಯದಾ ವ್ರಜತಿ ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮಂ ಗ್ರಾಮಾರ್ಥೇ ನಗರಸ್ಯ ವಾ৷৷2.2.36৷৷

ಗತ್ವಾ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಸಹಿತೋ ನಾವಿಜಿತ್ಯ ನಿವರ್ತತೇ.


ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥನೈಪುಣೈ: distinguished in the twin aspects of dharma and artha ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೈ: by the best, ದ್ವಿಜೈ: by brahmins, ಅಭಿವಿನೀತ: well-instructed in all the matters, ಗ್ರಾಮಾರ್ಥೇ for the sake of a village, ನಗರಸ್ಯ ವಾ or a town, ಯದಾ when, ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮಮ್ the battle, ವ್ರಜತಿ proceeds, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಸಹಿತ: along with Lakshmana, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಅವಿಜಿತ್ಯ without conquering, ನ ನಿವರ್ತತೇ does not return.

Whenever he, well-instructed in all matters by the best of brahmins well-versed in dharma and artha proceeds along with Lakshmana to wage a war for the sake of a village or a town, he never returns without conquering the enemy.
ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮಾತ್ಪುನರಾಗಮ್ಯ ಕುಞ್ಜರೇಣ ರಥೇನ ವಾ.2.2.37৷৷

ಪೌರಾನ್ ಸ್ವಜನವನ್ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಕುಶಲಂ ಪರಿಪೃಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷

ಪುತ್ರೇಷ್ವಗ್ನಿಷು ದಾರೇಷು ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಶಿಷ್ಯಗಣೇಷು ಚ.2.2.38৷৷

ನಿಖಿಲೇನಾನುಪೂರ್ವ್ಯಾಚ್ಚ ಪಿತಾಪುತ್ರಾನಿವೌರಸಾನ್৷৷


ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮಾತ್ from the battlefield, ಕುಞ್ಜರೇಣ mounting on elephant, ರಥೇನ ವಾ or on a chariot, ಪುನ: ಆಗಮ್ಯ having returned, ಪೌರಾನ್ citizens, ಸ್ವಜನವತ್ like his own kith and kin, ಪಿತಾ father, ಔರಸಾನ್ ಪುತ್ರಾನಿವ like sons of his own blood, ಪುತ್ರೇಷು with respect to their children, ಅಗ್ನಿಷು sacred fires, ದಾರೇಷು wives, ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಶಿಷ್ಯಗಣೇಷು ಚ multitudes of their servants and disciples, ನಿಖಿಲೇನ in detail, ಆನುಪೂರ್ವ್ಯಾಚ್ಚ by following the proper order (protocol), ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ಪರಿಪೃಚ್ಛತಿ enquires.

While returning from the battlefield, either on a chariot or an elephant Rama stops and enquires in detail and in order, the welfare of the citizens as he would do for his kith and kin. He enquires about the welfare of their children, sacred rituals, wives, their servants and disciples as a father would enquire of his sons.
ಶುಶ್ರೂಷನ್ತೇ ಚ ವ ಶ್ಶಿಷ್ಯಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕರ್ಮಸು ದಂಶಿತಾಃ৷৷2.2.39৷৷

ಇತಿ ನಃ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಸ್ಸದಾ ರಾಮೋಭಿಭಾಷತೇ.


ವ: your, ಶಿಷ್ಯಾ: disciples, ಕರ್ಮಸು in their tasks, ದಂಶಿತಾ: perform, ಶುಶ್ರೂಷನ್ತೇ are serving, ಇತಿ like this, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ: a tiger among men, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಸದಾ always, ನ: us, ಅಭಿಭಾಷತೇ enquires.

Rama, a tiger among men, always enquires whether our disciples discharge their duties.
ವ್ಯಸನೇಷು ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ಭೃಶಂ ಭವತಿ ದುಃಖಿತಃ৷৷2.2.40৷৷

ಉತ್ಸವೇಷು ಚ ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಪಿತೇವ ಪರಿತುಷ್ಯತಿ.


ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ of people, ವ್ಯಸನೇಷು in misfortunes, ಭೃಶಮ್ profoundly, ದು:ಖಿತ: ಭವತಿ is grieved, ಸರ್ವೇಷು among all, ಉತ್ಸವೇಷು on festive occasions, ಪಿತೇವ like father, ಪರಿತುಷ್ಯತಿ rejoices.

He grieves profoundly whenever people are afflicted by misfortunes (and) rejoices like a father on festive occasions.
ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸೋ ವೃದ್ಧಸೇವೀ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.2.41৷৷

ಸ್ಮಿತಪೂರ್ವಾಭಿಭಾಷೀ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಂ ಸರ್ವಾತ್ಮನಾ ಶ್ರಿತಃ.


ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ one who speaks the truth, ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸ: one who is a great archer, ವೃದ್ಧಸೇವೀ one who serves the aged, ಜಿತೇದ್ರಿಯ: one who has conquered his senses, ಸ್ಮಿತಪೂರ್ವಾಭಿಭಾಷೀ ಚ speaks with a smiling face, ಸರ್ವಾತ್ಮನಾ whole-heartedly, ಧರ್ಮಂ ಶ್ರಿತ: takes refuge in dharma.

He is one who speaks the truth. He is a great archer, one who has conquered his senses and serves the aged. He speaks with a smile and protects dharma with all his heart.
ಸಮ್ಯಗ್ಯೋಕ್ತಾ ಶ್ರೇಯಸಾಂ ಚ ನ ವಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ಕಥಾರುಚಿಃ৷৷2.2.42৷৷

ಉತ್ತರೋತ್ತರಯುಕ್ತೌ ಚ ವಕ್ತಾ ವಾಚಸ್ಪತಿರ್ಯಥಾ.


ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ rightly, ಶ್ರೇಯಸಾಂ ಯೋಕ್ತಾ does good, ವಿಗೃಹ್ಯ creating dissention, ಕಥಾರುಚಿ: ನ not interested in conversation, ಉತ್ತರೋತ್ತರಯುಕ್ತೌ in debates, ವಾಚಸ್ಪತಿರ್ಯಥಾ like Brihastpati, ವಕ್ತಾ orator.

He helps those who take refuge in him. He is not interested in conversation leading to dissentions. But during debates he is eloquent like Brihaspati (establing the truth on the basis of reasoning).
ಸುಭ್ರೂರಾಯತ ತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷ ಸ್ಸಾಕ್ಷಾದ್ವಿಷ್ಣುರಿವ ಸ್ವಯಮ್৷৷2.2.43৷৷

ರಾಮೋ ಲೋಕಾಭಿರಾಮೋಯಂ ಶೌರ್ಯವೀರ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮೈಃ.


ಲೋಕಾಭಿರಾಮ: one who is the delight of the worlds, ಅಯಮ್ he, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಸುಭ್ರೂ: having charming eye-brows, ಆಯತತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷ: having large copper-coloured eyes, ಶೌರ್ಯವೀರ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮೈ: with heroism, bravery and valour, ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ manifesting, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ personally, ವಿಷ್ಣು: ಇವ like Visnu.

Rama, who is the source of delight to the world, has charming eye-brows and large copper-coloured eyes. He is endowed with heroism, bravery and valour like Visnu
manifested.
ಪ್ರಜಾಪಾಲನತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞೋ ನ ರಾಗೋಪಹತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.2.44৷৷

ಶಕ್ತಸ್ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯಮಪ್ಯೇಕೋ ಭೋಕ್ತುಂ ಕಿನ್ನು ಮಹೀಮಿಮಾಮ್.


ಪ್ರಜಾಪಾಲನತತ್ವಜ್ಞ: proficient in the ways and means of ruling the people, ರಾಗೋಪಹತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: senses not overpowered by passion, ನ not, ಏಕ: alone, ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯಮಪಿ three worlds, ಭೋಕ್ತುಮ್ to enjoy, ಶಕ್ತ: capable, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಮಹೀಮ್ earth, ಕಿನ್ನು why to say?

He is proficient in the ways and means of ruling the people. His senses are not overpowered by passion. He alone is capable of ruling the three worlds, what to speak the earth!
ನಾಸ್ಯ ಕ್ರೋಧಃ ಪ್ರಸಾದಶ್ಚ ನಿರರ್ಥೋಸ್ತಿ ಕದಾಚನ৷৷2.2.45৷৷

ಹನ್ತ್ಯೇವ ನಿಯಮಾದ್ವಧ್ಯಾನವಧ್ಯೇ ನ ಚ ಕುಪ್ಯತಿ.


ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಕೋಪ: anger, ಪ್ರಸಾದಶ್ಚ favour also, ಕದಾಚನ ever, ನಿರರ್ಥ(ಕ): in vain, ನಾಸ್ತಿ is not, ನಿಯಮಾತ್ in accordance with justice, ವಧ್ಯಾನ್ those who deserve to be killed, ಹನ್ತಿ ಏವ is punishable, ಅವಧ್ಯೇ those who should not be killed, ನ ಕುಪ್ಯತಿ does not get angry.

His anger or favour never goes in vain. He kills those who rightly deserve to be killed and flares not at those whose life is to be spared.
ಯುನಕ್ತ್ಯರ್ಥೈಃ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ ತಮಸೌ ಯತ್ರ ತುಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.2.46৷৷

ಶಾನ್ತೈ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಜಾಕಾನ್ತೈಃ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಞ್ಜನನೈರ್ನೃಣಾಮ್.

ಗುಣೈರ್ವಿರುರುಚೇ ರಾಮೋ ದೀಪ್ತ ಸ್ಸೂರ್ಯ ಇವಾಂಶುಭಿಃ৷৷2.2.47৷৷


ಅಸೌ he (this Rama), ಯತ್ರ wherever, ತುಷ್ಯತಿ is pleased, ತಮ್ him, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟ: pleased, ಅರ್ಥೈ: with wealth, ಯುನಕ್ತಿ bestows, ಶಾನ್ತೈ: with tranquil, ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಜಾಕಾನ್ತೈ: charming to all men, ನೃಣಾಮ್ for men, ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಞ್ಜನನೈ: causing delight to the good, ಗುಣೈ: with virtues, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಅಂಶುಭಿ: with rays, ದೀಪ್ತ: shining, ಸೂರ್ಯ: ಇವ like Sun, ವಿರುರುಚೇ shines.

When pleased, Rama bestows wealth. Like the Sun shining with his rays, He shines with his qualities of tranquil, charming and loving nature.
ತಮೇವಂಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್.

ಲೋಕಪಾಲೋಪಮಂ ನಾಥಮಕಾಮಯತ ಮೇದಿನೀ৷৷2.2.48৷৷


ಮೇದಿನೀ the earth, ಏವಂ ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ richly endowed with such virtues, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ with proven prowess, ಲೋಕಪಾಲೋಪಮಮ್ comparable to Indra and other regents of the world, (ತಂ)ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ನಾಥಮ್ as lord, ಅಕಾಮಯತ desired.

The earth desired to have Rama, richly endowed with such virtues, possessing proven prowess, comparable to Indra and other regents of the world, as her lord.

ದೇವಾಸುರಮನುಷ್ಯೇಷು ಸಗನ್ಧರ್ವೋರಗೇಷು ಚ৷৷2.2.50৷৷

ಆಶಂಸತೇ ಜನಸ್ಸರ್ವೋ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೇ ಪುರವರೇ ತಥಾ.

ಆಭ್ಯನ್ತರಶ್ಚ ಬಾಹ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೋ ಜನಃ৷৷2.2.51৷৷


ಸಗನ್ಧರ್ವೋರಗೇಷು along with gandharvas, uragas, ದೇವಾಸುರಮನುಷ್ಯೇಷು among devas, asuras and men, ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನ: well-known, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಬಲಮ್ strength, ಆರೋಗ್ಯಮ್ health, ಆಯುಶ್ಚ long life, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೇ in the country, ತಥಾ also, ಪುರವರೇ in the foremost of towns, ಸರ್ವ: ಜನ: all men, ಆಭ್ಯನ್ತರ: ಚ in the neighbourhood, ಬಾಹ್ಯಶ್ಚ or distant, ಪೌರಜಾನಪದ: ಜನ: inhabitants of towns and
villages, ಆಶಂಸತೇ are wishing for.

Gandharvas, uragas, devas, asuras, the inhabitants of towns and villages, all men living in neighbouring or distant regions are wish the illustrious Rama strength, health and long life.
ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯೋ ವೃದ್ಧಾಸ್ತರುಣ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಸಾಯಂ ಪ್ರಾತಸ್ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ.

ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ದೇವಾನ್ ನಮಸ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾರ್ಥೇ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಃ৷৷2.2.52৷৷


ವೃದ್ಧಾ: the aged, ತರುಣ್ಯಶ್ಚ young, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯ: women, ಸಾಯಮ್ at dusk, ಪ್ರಾತ: at dawn, ಸಮಾಹಿತಾ: with steadfast minds, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನ: illustrious, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of Rama, ಅರ್ಥೇ on account of, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ದೇವಾನ್ the gods, ನಮಸ್ಯನ್ತಿ are invoking.

Women, young and old alike devoutly invoke at dusk and at dawn all the gods for the sake of the celebrated Rama.
ತೇಷಾಮಾಯಾಚಿತಂ ದೇವ! ತ್ವತ್ಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ಸಮೃದ್ಧ್ಯತಾಮ್.

ರಾಮಮಿನ್ದೀವರಶ್ಯಾಮಂ ಸರ್ವಶತ್ರುನಿಬರ್ಹಣಮ್৷৷2.2.53৷৷

ಪಶ್ಯಾಮೋ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಥಂ ತವ ರಾಜೋತ್ತಮಾತ್ಮಜಮ್.


ದೇವ O king!, ತ್ವತ್ಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ by your grace, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಆಯಾಚಿತಮ್ prayer, ಸಮೃದ್ಧ್ಯತಾಮ್ be fulfilled, ರಾಜೋತ್ತಮ great among kings, ಇನ್ದೀವರಶ್ಯಾಮಮ್ complexion like blue lotus, ಸರ್ವಶತ್ರುನಿಬರ್ಹಣಮ್ destroyer of foes, ತವ your, ಆತ್ಮಜಮ್ son, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಯೈವರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ as prince regent, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮ: shall see.

O Lord let the peoples' prayer be fulfilled by your blessings. We would like to see your son Rama of the complexion of a blue-lotus and destroyer of enemies as prince regent.
ತಂ ದೇವ ದೇವೋಪಮಮಾತ್ಮಜಂ ತೇ

ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಹಿತೇ ನಿವಿಷ್ಟಮ್.

ಹಿತಾಯ ನಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮುದಾರಜುಷ್ಟಂ

ಮುದಾಭಷೇಕ್ತುಂ ವರದ! ತ್ವಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.2.54৷৷


ವರದ! O bestower of boons, ದೇವದೇವೋಪಮಮ್ equal to god of the gods, ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ for the entire, ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ for the world, ಹಿತೇ in the welfare, ನಿವಿಷ್ಟಮ್ intent upon, ಉದಾರಜುಷ್ಟಮ್ one who welcomes nobility, ತಮ್ that, ತೇ ಆತ್ಮಜಮ್ your son, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ನ: for our, ಹಿತಾಯ welfare, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ without delay, ಮುದಾ cheerfully, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ತುಮ್ to enthrone as heir-apparent, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves you.

O bestower of boons! it behoves you to install with delight and without delay your son (Rama) endowed with all virtues equal to god of the gods and committed to our well-being and to the welfare of this world, as your heir-apparent.
