[Rama enters to the inner apartment of his mother Kausalya--informs her of his exile to the forest--lamentations of Kausalya.]

ತಸ್ಮಿಂಸ್ತು ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೇ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾಮತಿ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲೌ.

ಆರ್ತಶಬ್ದೋ ಮಹಾನ್ ಜಜ್ಞೇ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮನ್ತಃಪುರೇ ತದಾ৷৷2.20.1৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೇ tiger among men, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that Rama, ಕೃತಾಜ್ಞಲೌ with folded palms, ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾಮತಿ while (he was) leaving, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರೇ in the inner apartment, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ women's, ಮಹಾನ್
great, ಆರ್ತಶಬ್ದಃ cries of distress, ಜಜ್ಞೇ arose.

When the tiger among men (Rama) was coming out with folded palms, there arose a huge cry of distress among the ladies of the harem:
ಕೃತ್ಯೇಷ್ವಚೋದಿತಃ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯಾನ್ತಃಪುರಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಗತಿರ್ಯಶ್ಶರಣಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಸ ರಾಮೋದ್ಯ ಪ್ರವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.20.2৷৷


ಯಃ who (Rama), ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಕೃತ್ಯೇಷು in his duty, ಅಚೋದಿತಃ without being urged, ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ entire, ಅನ್ತಃ ಪುರಸ್ಯ for the inner apartment, ಗತಿಃ refuge, ಶರಣಂ ಚ (ಆಸೀತ್) was protector, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಪ್ರವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ is now going on exile.

Rama was the refuge and protector of all the inmates lot of the inner apartment although it was not his duty nor was he forced by his father to safeguard them. That Rama is now going on exile.
ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಯಥಾ ಯುಕ್ತೋ ಜನನ್ಯಾಂ ವರ್ತತೇ ಸದಾ.

ತಥೈವ ವರ್ತತೇಸ್ಮಾಸು ಜನ್ಮಪ್ರಭೃತಿ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.20.3৷৷


ಜನ್ಮಪ್ರಭೃತಿ right from birth, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಜನನ್ಯಾಮ್ with regard to his mother, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Kausalya, ಸದಾ always, ಯುಕ್ತಃ devoted, ಯಥಾ how, ವರ್ತತೇ is conducting himself, ಅಸ್ಮಾಸು in all
of us, ತಥೈವ in the same way, ವರ್ತತೇ is conducting.

Rama conducted himself towards us in the same way as he did towards his mother Kausalya right from the begining.
ನ ಕ್ರುಧ್ಯತ್ಯಭಿಶಪ್ತೋಪಿ ಕ್ರೋಧನೀಯಾನಿ ವರ್ಜಯನ್.

ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಾನ್ಪ್ರಸಾದಯನ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಸ ಇತೋದ್ಯ ಪ್ರವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.20.4৷৷


ಕ್ರೋಧನೀಯಾನಿ deeds that cause anger, ವರ್ಜಯನ್ avoiding, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಾನ್ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all choleric-tempered persons, ಪ್ರಸಾದಯನ್ pacifying them, ಅಭಿಶಪ್ತೋಪಿ even cursed, ನ ಕ್ರುಧ್ಯತಿ does not get angry, ಸಃ such Rama, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಇತಃ from here, ಪ್ರವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ is going on exile.

Rama who used to avoid deeds that caused anger, pacified those who were angry with him, and never lost his cool even when cursed, that Rama is going on exile today.
ಅಬುದ್ಧಿರ್ಬತ ನೋ ರಾಜಾ ಜೀವಲೋಕಂ ಚರತ್ಯಯಮ್.

ಯೋ ಗತಿಂ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಂ ಪರಿತ್ಯಜತಿ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷.2.20.5৷৷


ಬತ alas! ಯಃ who (Dasaratha), ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ of all beings, ಗತಿಮ್ who is the refuge, ರಾಘವಮ್ to the son of the Raghus (Rama), ಪರಿತ್ಯಜತಿ is abandoning, ಅಯಮ್ this, ನಃ ರಾಜಾ our king, ಅಬುದ್ಧಿ: devoid of intellect, ಜೀವಲೋಕಮ್ in the world of living beings, ಚರತಿ moving.

Alas! our king who has lost his brain, who has ordered the banishment of Rama, the refuge of all living beings, (on the other hand) is moving about in the world.
ಇತಿ ಸರ್ವಾ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಸ್ತಾ ವಿವತ್ಸಾ ಇವ ಧೇನವಃ.

ಪತಿಮಾಚುಕ್ರುಶುಶ್ಚೈವ ಸಸ್ವರಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ৷৷2.20.6৷৷


ಇತಿ thus, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ತಾಃ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಃ the king's wives, ವಿವತ್ಸಾಃ calfless, ಧೇನವಃ ಇವ like cows, ಸಸ್ವರಮ್ loudly, ಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ ಚ ಅಪಿ cried and also, ಪತಿಮ್ husband, ಅಚುಕ್ರುಶುಶ್ಚ ಏವ blamed also.

Thus all the queens like calfless cows cried loudly blaming their husband.
ಸ ಹಿ ಚಾನ್ತಃಪುರೇ ಘೋರಮಾರ್ತಶಬ್ದಂ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ.

ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾಭಿಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವ್ಯಾಲೀಯತಾಸನೇ৷৷2.20.7৷৷


ಸಃ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ that lord of the earth (king), ಅನ್ತಃಪುರೇ in the harem, ಘೋರಮ್ painful, ಆರ್ತಶಬ್ದಮ್ cries of distress, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಪುತ್ರ ಶೋಕಾಭಿಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ tormented with grief on account of his son, ಆಸನೇ in his seat, ವ್ಯಾಲೀಯತ sank down.

Tormented with grief on account of his son, the king sank in his seat on hearing the cries of distress from the inner apartment
ರಾಮಸ್ತು ಭೃಶಮಾಯಸ್ತೋ ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ನಿವ ಕುಞ್ಜರಃ.

ಜಗಾಮ ಸಹಿತೋ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಮಾತುರನ್ತಃಪುರಂ ವಶೀ৷৷2.20.8৷৷


ವಶೀ having self-control, ರಾಮಸ್ತು Rama however, ಭೃಶಮ್ highly, ಆಯಸ್ತಃ troubled, ಕುಞ್ಜರಃ ಇವ like an elephant, ನಿಃಶ್ವಸನ್ heaving sighs, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ brother, ಸಹಿತಃ together with, ಮಾತುಃ mother's, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ towards inner apartment, ಜಗಾಮ went.

Deeply pained yet self-possessed Rama, heaving sighs like an elephant went towards the inner apartment of his mother along with his brother.
ಸೋಪಶ್ಯತ್ಪುರುಷಂ ತತ್ರ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ಪರಮಪೂಜಿತಮ್.

ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ಗೃಹದ್ವಾರಿ ತಿಷ್ಠತಶ್ಚಾಪರಾನ್ಬಹೂನ್৷৷2.20.9৷৷


ಸಃ he, ತತ್ರ there, ಗೃಹದ್ವಾರಿ at the entrance of the residence, ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟಮ್ seated, ಪರಮಪೂಜಿತಮ್ highly venerable, ವೃದ್ಧಂ ಪುರುಷಮ್ aged man, ತಿಷ್ಠತಃ standing, ಬಹೂನ್ many, ಅಪರಾಂಶ್ಚ others, ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ beheld.

Rama beheld a highly venerable elderly man seated at the entrance of the residence and many others standing (near-by).
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ ತು ತದಾ ರಾಮಂ ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ಸಹಸೋತ್ಥಿತಾಃ.

ಜಯೇನ ಜಯತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಂ ವರ್ಧಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷2.20.10৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ on seeing, ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ all of them, ಸಹಸಾ immediately, ಉತ್ಥಿತಾಃ stood up, ಜಯತಾಮ್ among victors, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ best, ರಾಘವಮ್ to the scion of the Raghu dynasty (Rama), ಜಯೇನ with victory, ವರ್ಧಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ caused prosperity.

On seeing Rama, all the eminent among the victors got up immediately and greeted him, saying, 'Victory to you'.
ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಪ್ರಥಮಾಂ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಂ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾಯಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಸಃ.

ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನ್ವೇದಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾನ್ವೃದ್ಧಾನ್ರಾಜ್ಞಾಭಿಸತ್ಕೃತಾನ್৷৷2.20.11৷৷


ಸಃ he (Rama), ಪ್ರಥಮಾಂ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ್ first courtyard, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾಯಾಮ್ in the second courtyard, ವೇದಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾನ್ learned in the Vedas, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ಅಭಿಸತ್ಕೃತಾನ್ well-honoured, ವೃದ್ಧಾನ್ aged, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನ್ brahmins, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

With the first courtyard crossed, Rama saw in the second aged brahmins versed in the Vedas, and duly honoured by the king.
ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ತಾನ್ವಿಪ್ರಾಂಸ್ತೃತೀಯಾಯಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಸಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯೋ ವೃದ್ಧಾಸ್ತಥಾ ಬಾಲಾ ದ್ವಾರರಕ್ಷಣತತ್ಪರಾಃ৷৷2.20.12৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮ that Rama, ತಾನ್ ವಿಪ್ರಾನ್ those brahmins, ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ having paid obeisance, ತೃತೀಯಾಯಾಮ್ in the third courtyard, ದ್ವಾರರಕ್ಷಣತತ್ಪರಾಃ vigilantly guarding the door, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ವೃದ್ಧಾ: the old, ತಥಾ as also, ಬಾಲಾಃ young children, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Rama wished the brahmins and saw old men, women and children vigilantly guarding the door in the third courtyard.
ವರ್ಧಯಿತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾಸ್ತಾಃ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಚ ಗೃಹಂ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ.

ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ತ ತ್ವರಿತಾ ರಾಮಮಾತುಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ತದಾ৷৷2.20.13৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತಾಃ those, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ were very pleased, ವರ್ಧಯಿತ್ವಾ greeting him with words wishing prosperity, ತ್ವರಿತಾಃ in great haste, ಗೃಹಮ್ in the apartment, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ರಾಮಮಾತುಃ Rama's mother, (Kausalya), ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasant (tidings), ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ತ informed.

Well-pleased, the women then greeted him wishing prosperity. They hurried into the abode of Kausalya and gave her the happy news (of Rama's arrival).
ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಪಿ ತದಾ ದೇವೀ ರಾತ್ರಿಂ ಸ್ಥಿತ್ವಾ ಸಮಾಹಿತಾ.

ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ ತ್ವಕರೋತ್ಪೂಜಾಂ ವಿಷ್ಣೋಃ ಪುತ್ರಹಿತೈಷಿಣೀ৷৷2.20.14৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ರಾತ್ರಿಮ್ night, ಸಮಾಹಿತಾ with composed mind, ಸ್ಥಿತ್ವಾ remaining (in meditation), ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ in the early morning, ಪುತ್ರಹಿತೈಷಿಣೀ to secure her son's welfare, ವಿಷ್ಣೋಃ Visnu's, ಪೂಜಾಮ್ worship, ಅಕರೋತ್ performed.

Having spent the night with a composed mind (abosorbed in meditation), Kausalya was worshipping lord Visnu in the early morning to secure her son's welfare.
ಸಾ ಕ್ಷೌಮವಸನಾ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ವ್ರತಪರಾಯಣಾ.

ಅಗ್ನಿಂ ಜುಹೋತಿ ಸ್ಮ ತದಾ ಮನ್ತ್ರವತ್ಕೃತಮಙ್ಗಲಾ৷৷2.20.15৷৷


ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ವ್ರತಪರಾಯಣಾ devoted to performing vows, ಸಾ she, ಕ್ಷೌಮವಸನಾ clad in silk cloth, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ in delight, ಕೃತಮಙ್ಗಲಾ having performed the rituals of auspiciousness, ಮನ್ತ್ರವತ್ in accordance with mantras, ಅಗ್ನಿಂ fire, ಜುಹೋತಿ ಸ್ಮ offered oblations.

Always engaged in the observance of vows, Kausalya (then) clad in silk cloth was performing rituals of auspiciousness, offering oblations to the fire-god in accordance with mantras (Vedic hymns).
ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಚ ತದಾ ರಾಮೋ ಮಾತುರನ್ತ:ಪುರಂ ಶುಭಮ್.

ದದರ್ಶ ಮಾತರಂ ತತ್ರ ಹಾವಯನ್ತೀಂ ಹುತಾಶನಮ್৷৷2.20.16৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ಮಾತು: ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ inner apartment of his mother, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ತತ್ರ there, ಹುತಾಶನಮ್ to Agni, ಹಾವಯನ್ತೀಮ್ exhorting the priests to offer sacrificial oblations, ಮಾತರಮ್ to mother, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Rama entered the auspicious inner apartment of his mother and saw her exhorting the priests to offer sacrificial oblations to Agni (fire-god).
ದೇವಕಾರ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ಚ ತತ್ರಾಪಶ್ಯತ್ಸಮುದ್ಯತಮ್.

ದಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತಂ ಘೃತಂ ಚೈವ ಮೋದಕಾನ್ಹವಿಷಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷2.20.17৷৷

ಲಾಜಾನ್ಮಾಲ್ಯಾನಿ ಶುಕ್ಲಾನಿ ಪಾಯಸಂ ಕೃಸರಂ ತಥಾ.

ಸಮಿಧ: ಪೂರ್ಣಕುಮ್ಭಾಂಶ್ಚ ದದರ್ಶ ರಘುನನ್ದನಃ৷৷2.20.18৷৷


ರಘುನನ್ದನಃ scion of the Raghus or delight of the Raghu race (Rama), ತತ್ರ there, ದೇವಕಾರ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ on account of religious acts, ಸಮುದ್ಯತಮ್ (things) kept ready, ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ saw, ದಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತಮ್ curd, grains of rice (smeared with turmeric), ಘೃತಂ ಚೈವ also clarified butter, ಮೋದಕಾನ್ sweetmeats, ತಥಾ as also, ಹವಿಷಃ oblations, ಲಾಜಾನ್ parched grain, ಶುಕ್ಲಾನಿ white, ಮಾಲ್ಯಾನಿ garlands of flowers, ಪಾಯಸಮ್ porridge, ಕೃಸರಮ್ sesame seeds mixed with cooked rice, ಸಮಿಧಃ sacrirficial faggots, ಪೂರ್ಣಕುಮ್ಭಾನ್ vessels filled with water, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

There Rama saw curd, grains of rice, clarified butter, sweetmeats, oblations, parched grain, white garlands, porridge of cooked rice mixed with sesame seeds, sacrirficial faggots, vessels filled with water, etc. kept ready for religious rites.
ತಾಂ ಶುಕ್ಲಕ್ಷೌಮಸಂವೀತಾಂ ವ್ರತಯೋಗೇನ ಕರ್ಶಿತಾಮ್.

ತರ್ಪಯನ್ತೀಂ ದದರ್ಶಾದ್ಭಿರ್ದೇವತಾಂ ದೇವವರ್ಣಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.20.19৷৷


ಶುಕ್ಲಕ್ಷೌಮಸಂವೀತಾಮ್ wearing white silk, ವ್ರತಯೋಗೇನ due to observance of vows, ಕರ್ಶಿತಾಮ್ emaciated, ದೇವವರ್ಣಿನೀಮ್ having divine complexion, ಅದ್ಭಿಃ with water, ದೇವತಾಮ್ to deities, ತರ್ಪಯನ್ತೀಮ್ engaged in propitiating, ತಾಮ್ her (Kausalya), ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

Kausalya, emaciated due to observance of vows and clad in white silk looked like a celestial being. She was engaged in offering libations to the deities.
ಸಾ ಚಿರಸ್ಯಾತ್ಮಜಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಮಾತೃನನ್ದನಮಾಗತಮ್.

ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಕಿಶೋರಂ ಬಡಬಾ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.20.20৷৷


ಸಾ she, ಚಿರಸ್ಯ after a long time, ಆಗತಮ್ arrived, ಮಾತೃನನ್ದನಮ್ delight to mother, ಆತ್ಮಜಮ್ her son, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ in great delight, ಬಡಬಾ mare, ಕಿಶೋರಂ ಯಥಾ like its offspring, ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ went towards him.

Seeing her son who had come after a long time and who is a source of joy to his
mother, Kausalya approached him with great delight like a mare to her young calf.
ಸ ಮಾತರಮಭಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾಮುಪಸಂಗೃಹ್ಯ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಪರಿಷ್ವಕ್ತಶ್ಚ ಬಾಹುಭ್ಯಾಮುಪಾಘ್ರಾತಶ್ಚ ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ৷৷2.20.21৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ that scion of the Raghus (Rama), ಅಭಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾಮ್ who had come to him, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ಉಪಸಂಗೃಹ್ಯ with respectful salutations, ಬಾಹುಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with both arms, ಪರಿಷ್ವಕ್ತಃ was embraced, ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ on his forehead, ಉಪಾಘ್ರಾತಶ್ಚ was kissed.

The scion of the Raghus saw his mother coming and bowed her. She held him in both her arms and kissed his forehead.
ತಮುವಾಚ ದುರಾಧರ್ಷಂ ರಾಘವಂ ಸುತಮಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಪುತ್ರವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯಾದಿದಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.20.22৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ದುರಾಧರ್ಷಮ್ invincible, ಆತ್ಮನಃ her own, ಸುತಮ್ son, ತಂ ರಾಘವಮ್ that Rama, ಪುತ್ರವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯಾತ್ out of filial affection, ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತಮ್ pleasant and beneficial, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚಃ words, ಉವಾಚ spoke.

Out of love for her son, the invincible scion of the Raghu dynasty, Kausalya spoke with gentle and pleasant words:
ವೃದ್ಧಾನಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲಾನಾಂ ರಾಜರ್ಷೀಣಾಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್.

ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುಹ್ಯಾಯುಶ್ಚ ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಂ ಚೋಪಹಿತಂ ಕುಲೇ৷৷2.20.23৷৷


ವೃದ್ಧಾನಾಮ್ of the aged, ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲಾನಾಮ್ of the virtuous, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ great, ರಾಜರ್ಷೀಣಾಮ್ of the rajarsis, ಆಯುಶ್ಚ long life, ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಚ fame, ಕುಲೇ in the race, ಉಪಹಿತಮ್ maintained over a long time, ಧರ್ಮಂ ಚ righteousness, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನು ಹಿ you may attain.

May you attain long life and fame like those of the aged, virtuous and great rajarsis who upheld the righteousness in the race.
ಸತ್ಯಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಂ ಪಿತರಂ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಪಶ್ಯ ರಾಘವ!.

ಅದ್ಯೈವ ಹಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.20.24৷৷


ರಾಘವ scion of the Raghu dynasty (Rama), ಸತ್ಯಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಮ್ true to his promise, ಪಿತರಮ್ your father, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಪಶ್ಯ see, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous one, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಅದ್ಯೈವ today, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ will coronate you.

O scion of the Raghu race! see the king, your righteous and truthful father, who will consecrate you as prince-regent today itself.
ದತ್ತಮಾಸನಮಾಲಭ್ಯ ಭೋಜನೇನ ನಿಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಃ.

ಮಾತರಂ ರಾಘವಃ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದ್ವ್ರೀಡಾತ್ಪ್ರಸಾರ್ಯಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.20.25৷৷


ಭೋಜನೇನ with food, ನಿಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಃ a man invited, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ದತ್ತಮ್ provided, ಆಸನಮ್ seat, ಆಲಭ್ಯ having touched, ವ್ರೋಡಾತ್ out of shame, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ a little, ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded hands, ಪ್ರಸಾರ್ಯ having stretched, ಮಾತರಮ್ to mother, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Invited (by Kausalya) to partake the food, Rama out of abashment only touched the seat provided to him and having stretched his folded palms spoke to his mother.
ಸ ಸ್ವಭಾವವಿನೀತಶ್ಚ ಗೌರವಾಚ್ಚ ತದಾ ನತಃ.

ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತೋ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷2.20.26৷৷


ಸ್ವಭಾವವಿನೀತಶ್ಚ by nature modest, ತದಾ then, ಗೌರವಾತ್ out of reverence (for his mother), ನತಃ ಚ humble also, ಸಃ he, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ to Dandaka forest, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಃ for his departure, ಅಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to seek her permission, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ commenced.

Modest by nature, Rama with respectful humility began seeking her permission for his departure to Dandaka forest:
ದೇವಿ! ನೂನಂ ನ ಜಾನೀಷೇ ಮಹದ್ಭಯಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್.

ಇದಂ ತವ ಚ ದುಃಖಾಯ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.20.27৷৷


ದೇವಿ O Devi!, ನೂನಮ್ certainly, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ has befallen, ಮಹತ್ great, ಭಯಮ್ misfortune, ನ ಜಾನೀಷೇ you do not know, ಇದಮ್ this one, ತವ ಚ to you, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ of Sita, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯ ಚ of Lakshmana also, ದುಃಖಾಯ for distress.

O mother! surely you do not know that a great misfortune has befallen, causing distress to you, Sita and Lakshmana, too.
ಗಮಿಷ್ಯೇ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಂ ಕಿಮನೇನಾಸನೇನ ಮೇ.

ವಿಷ್ಟರಾಸನಯೋಗ್ಯೋ ಹಿ ಕಾಲೋಯಂ ಮಾಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ৷৷2.20.28৷৷


ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ to Dandaka forest, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯೇ setting forth, ಮೇ for me, ಅನೇನ ಆಸನೇನ with this seat, ಕಿಮ್ what is the purpose, ವಿಷ್ಟರಾಸನಯೋಗ್ಯಃ worthy of a mat made of kusa grass, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಕಾಲಃ time, ಮಮ for me, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ has come.

I am setting forth to Dandaka forest. What is this seat for? A time has come for me when I am fit for a seat of kusa grass.
ಚತುರ್ದಶ ಹಿ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ವಿಜನೇ ವನೇ.

ಮಧುಮೂಲಫಲೈರ್ಜೀವನ್ಹಿತ್ವಾ ಮುನಿವದಾಮಿಷಮ್৷৷2.20.29৷৷


ಅಮಿಷಮ್ all meat, ಹಿತ್ವಾ abstaining, ಮುನಿವತ್ like a hermit, ಮಧುಮೂಲಫಲೈಃ honey, fruits and roots, ಜೀವನ್ while living on, ಚತುರ್ದಶ fourteen, ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ವಿಜನೇ in a solitary, ವನೇ in the forest, ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ am to dwell.

Abstaining from eating meat like hermits and living on honey, fruits and roots, I am to live in the solitary forest for fourteen years.
ಭರತಾಯ ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛತಿ.

ಮಾಂ ಪುನರ್ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ ವಿವಾಸಯತಿ ತಾಪಸಮ್৷৷2.20.30৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ great king, ಭರತಾಯ to Bharata, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ status of heir-apparent, ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛತಿ is conferring, ಮಾಂ ಪುನಃ for me again, ತಾಪಸಮ್ like an ascetic, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ in Dandaka forest, ವಿವಾಸಯತಿ sending in exile.

The great king is conferring the status of heir-apparent on Bharata while he is banishing me to Dandaka forest to live like an ascetic.
ಸ ಷಟ್ಚಾಷ್ಟೌ ಚ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ವಿಜನೇ ವನೇ.

ಆಸೇವಮಾನೋ ವನ್ಯಾನಿ ಫಲಮೂಲೈಶ್ಚ ವರ್ತಯನ್৷৷2.20.31৷৷


ಸಃ that (I am), ವನ್ಯಾನಿ forest products, ಆಸೇವಮಾನಃ eating, ಫಲಮೂಲೈಃ fruits and roots, ವರ್ತಯನ್ while living, ಷಟ್ಚಾಷ್ಟೌ ಚ six and eight (fourteen), ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ವಿಜನೇ ವನೇ in the desolate forest, ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ shall dwell.

Living on things available in the forest, on fruits and roots, I am to dwell in the uninhabited jungle for fourteen years.
ಸಾ ನಿಕೃತ್ತೇವ ಸಾಲಸ್ಯ ಯಷ್ಟಿಃ ಪರಶುನಾ ವನೇ.

ಪಪಾತ ಸಹಸಾ ದೇವೀ ದೇವತೇವ ದಿವಶ್ಚ್ಯುತಾ৷৷2.20.32৷৷


ಸಾ ದೇವೀ that Kausalya, ಪರಶುನಾ with an axe, ವನೇ in the forest, ನಿಕೃತ್ತಾ severed, ಸಾಲಸ್ಯ sal tree's, ಯಷ್ಟಿಃ ಇವ like a stick (branch), ದಿವಃ from heaven, ಚ್ಯುತಾ fallen down, ದೇವತೇವ like a celestial, ಸಹಸಾ suddenly, ಪಪಾತ fell down.

All on a sidden Kausalya fell down on the ground like the branch of a sal tree in the forest severed by an axe, like a goddess dropped from heaven.
ತಾಮದುಃಖೋಚಿತಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪತಿತಾಂ ಕದಲೀಮಿವ.

ರಾಮಸ್ತೂತ್ಥಾಪಯಾಮಾಸ ಮಾತರಂ ಗತಚೇತಸಮ್৷৷2.20.33৷৷


ಅದುಃಖೋಚಿತಾಮ್ who does not deserve sorrow, ಪತಿತಾಮ್ fallen on the ground, ಕದಲೀಮಿವ like a
plantain tree, ಗತಚೇತಸಮ್ deprived of her senses, ತಾಂ ಮಾತರಮ್ to that mother, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಉತ್ಥಾಪಯಾಮಾಸ lifted her up.

Seeing his mother who had done nothing to deserve (this) suffering and who had fallen down like a plantain tree, deprived of her senses, Rama raised her up (from the ground).
ಉಪಾವೃತ್ತ್ಯೋತ್ಥಿತಾಂ ದೀನಾಂ ಬಡಬಾಮಿವ ವಾಹಿತಾಮ್.

ಪಾಂಸುಕುಣ್ಠಿತಸರ್ವಾಙ್ಗೀಂ ವಿಮಮರ್ಶ ಚ ಪಾಣಿನಾ৷৷2.20.34৷৷


ಉಪಾವೃತ್ತ್ಯ rolled on the ground, ಉತ್ಥಿತಾಮ್ arisen, ವಾಹಿತಾಮ್ for drawing (heavy burden), ಬಡಬಾಮಿವ like a mare, ದೀನಾಮ್ miserable, ಪಾಂಸುಕುಣ್ಠಿತಸರ್ವಾಙ್ಗೀಮ್ all her body covered with dust, ಪಾಣಿನಾ with the hand, ವಿಮಮರ್ಶ caressed (wiped away).

Rama gently wiped away the dust that had covered her body as Kausalya stood miserable, like a mare who stands up after having rolled on the ground while pulling the load.
ಸಾ ರಾಘವಮುಪಾಸೀನಮಸುಖಾರ್ತಾ ಸುಖೋಚಿತಾ.

ಉವಾಚ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮುಪಶೃಣ್ವತಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ৷৷2.20.35৷৷


ಅಸುಖಾರ್ತಾ struck by lack of happiness, ಸುಖೋಚಿತಾ deserving happiness, ಸಾ she Kausalya, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ in Lakshmana, ಉಪಶೃಣ್ವತಿ while listening, ಉಪಾಸೀನಮ್ sitting nearby, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ to the tiger (the best) among men, ರಾಘವಮ್ to Rama, ಉವಾಚ said.

Kausalya who deserved happiness yet was struck down by (this) distress spoke to Rama, the tiger among men who was sitting nearby, while Lakshmana was listening.
ಯದಿ ಪುತ್ರ! ನ ಜಾಯೇಥಾ ಮಮ ಶೋಕಾಯ ರಾಘವ.

ನ ಸ್ಮ ದುಃಖಮತೋ ಭೂಯಃ ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮಹಮಪ್ರಜಾಃ৷৷2.20.36৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O my son!, ರಾಘವ Rama, ಮಮ to me, ಶೋಕಾಯ to cause sorrow, ನ ಜಾಯೇಥಾಃ ಯದಿ if you were
not born, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಪ್ರಜಾಃ without progeny, ಅತಃ more than this, ಭೂಯಃ greater, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrow, ನ ಸ್ಮ ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮ್ would not have seen.

O my son, if you were not born to me, I, even as a woman without progeny, would not have experienced grief, more intense than this.
ಏಕ ಏವ ಹಿ ವನ್ಧ್ಯಾಯಾ ಶ್ಶೋಕೋ ಭವತಿ ಮಾನಸಃ.

ಅಪ್ರಜಾಸ್ಮೀತಿ ಸನ್ತಾಪೋ ನ ಹ್ಯನ್ಯಃ ಪುತ್ರ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.20.37৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O my son!, ವನ್ಧ್ಯಾಯಾಃ for a barren woman, ಅಪ್ರಜಾಃ issueless, ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am, ಇತಿ thus, ಮಾನಸಃ in mind, ಏಕಃ one, ಶೋಕಃ affliction, ಭವತಿ ಹಿ surely happens, ಅನ್ಯಃ any other, ಸನ್ತಾಪಃ sorrow, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ ಹಿ does not exist.

O my son! a barren woman has only one mental agony that she has no progeny. Except that she does not have any other sorrow.
ನ ದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಂ ಸುಖಂ ವಾ ಪತಿಪೌರುಷೇ.

ಅಪಿ ಪುತ್ರೇ ಪಿ ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮಿತಿ ರಾಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಂ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.20.38৷৷


ರಾಮ O Rama!, ಪತಿಪೌರುಷೇ when my husband was exercising authority, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಮ್ auspicious moment, ಸುಖಂ ವಾ or pleasure, ನ ದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಮ್ was not seen earlier, ಪುತ್ರೇಪಿ in son, ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮ್ can I
see, ಇತಿ thus, ಮಯಾ by me, ಆಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ life is sustained.

I did not have the fortune, O Rama, to enjoy any auspicious moment or pleasure earlier when my husband was in authority. I exist with the hope that I will have it when my son assumes authority.
ಸಾ ಬಹೂನ್ಯಮನೋಜ್ಞಾನಿ ವಾಕ್ಯಾನಿ ಹೃದಯಚ್ಛಿದಾಮ್.

ಅಹಂ ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯೇ ಸಪತ್ನೀನಾಮವರಾಣಾಂ ವರಾ ಸತೀ৷৷2.20.39৷৷


ಸಾ ಅಹಮ್ such am I ವರಾ ಸತೀ being the eldest (of the queens), ಅವರಾಣಾಮ್ by the younger ones, ಹೃದಯಚ್ಛಿದಾಮ್ heart-breaking, ಸಪತ್ನೀನಾಮ್ co-wives, ಅಮನೋಜ್ಞಾನಿ unpleasant, ಬಹೂನಿ many,
ವಾಕ್ಯಾನಿ words, ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯೇ will have to listen.

I, being the eldest (of the queens) will have to listen to many heart-breaking and unpleasant words from my fellow-wives who are younger to me.
ಅತೋ ದುಃಖತರಂ ಕಿಂ ನು ಪ್ರಮದಾನಾಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಮಮ ಶೋಕೋ ವಿಲಾಪಶ್ಚ ಯಾದೃಶೋಯಮನನ್ತಕಃ৷৷2.20.40৷৷


ಮಮ to me, ಅನನ್ತಕಃ unending, ಯಾದೃಶ: ಶೋಕಃ such sorrow, ವಿಲಾಪಶ್ಚ lamentation, ಅತಃ now, ಪ್ರಮದಾನಾಮ್ for women, ದುಃಖತರಮ್ more distress, ಕಿಂ ನು ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ what else can be there?

There cannnot be greater distress for any woman than such unending grief and lamentation (which I am now experiencing).
ತ್ವಯಿ ಸನ್ನಿಹಿತೇಪ್ಯೇವಮಹಮಾಸಂ ನಿರಾಕೃತಾ.

ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ ಪ್ರೋಷಿತೇ ತಾತ! ಧ್ರುವಂ ಮರಣಮೇವ ಮೇ৷৷2.20.41৷৷


ತಾತ! O child!, ತ್ವಯಿ you, ಸನ್ನಿಹಿತೇಪಿ even when you are nearby, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ನಿರಾಕೃತಾ ಆಸಮ್ I am rejected, ಪ್ರೋಷಿತೇ when you are banished, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ what to say again, ಮೇ for me, ಮರಣಮ್ death, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ is certain.

O child! even when you are nearby I am neglected like this. What to say when you are banished. Death is certain to me.
ಅತ್ಯನ್ತನಿಗೃಹೀತಾಸ್ಮಿ ಭರ್ತುರ್ನಿತ್ಯಮತನ್ತ್ರಿತಾ.

ಪರಿವಾರೇಣ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸಮಾ ವಾಪ್ಯಥವಾವರಾ৷৷2.20.42৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ of Kaikeyi's, ಪರಿವಾರೇಣ attendants, ಸಮಾ ವಾ equal to, ಅಥವಾ or, ಅವರಾ inferior, ಅತನ್ತ್ರಿತಾ without independence, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಭರ್ತುಃ by husband, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತನಿಗೃಹೀತಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ am greatly repressed.

Treating me as an equal or inferior to the attendants of Kaikeyi and making me
always dependent, my husband has greatly suppressed me.
ಯೋಹಿ ಮಾಂ ಸೇವತೇ ಕಶ್ಚಿದಥವಾಪ್ಯನುವರ್ತತೇ.

ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ ಪುತ್ರಮನ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸ್ವಶ್ಚಿ ಜನೋ ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ৷৷2.20.43৷৷


ಯಃ whoever, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ any one, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಸೇವತೇ serving, ಅಥವಾ or, ಅನುವರ್ತತೇ following me, ಸಃ ಜನಃ such person, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ Kaikeyi's, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ಅನ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ನಾಭಿಭಾಷತೇ ಹಿ will not talk to me.

Any one who serves me or follows me will not talk to me after seeing Bharata (installed as heir-apparent).
ನಿತ್ಯಕ್ರೋಧತಯಾ ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕಥಂ ನು ಖರವಾದಿತತ್.

ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ವದನಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಪುತ್ರ! ಶಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ದುರ್ಗತಾ৷৷2.20.44৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O son, ದುರ್ಗತಾ fallen into a bad state, ನಿತ್ಯಕ್ರೋಧತಯಾ due to being always in temper, ಖರವಾದಿ speaking harsh words, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ that Kaikeyi's, ತತ್ವದನಮ್ that face, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to look at, ಕಥಂ ನು how, ಶಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will be able?

Fallen into an unfortunate state how can I look at Kaikeyi's face who is always harsh and in temper?
ದಶ ಸಪ್ತ ಚ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ಜಾತಸ್ಯ ತವ ರಾಘವ!

ಅತಿತಾನಿ ಪ್ರಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷನ್ತ್ಯಾ ಮಯಾ ದುಃಖಪರಿಕ್ಷಯಮ್৷৷2.20.45৷৷


ರಾಘವ Rama, ತವ ಜಾತಸ್ಯ after you were (re) born (after your investiture with the sacred thread regarded as second birth), ದಶ ಸಪ್ತ ಚ ten and seven (seventeen), ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ದುಃಖಪರಿಕ್ಷಯಮ್ end of my sorrows, ಪ್ರಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷನ್ತ್ಯಾ longing, ಮಯಾ by me, ಅತಿತಾನಿ have been spent.

O Rama, I have spent the last seventeen years after your birth with the expectaion that my sorrows would come to an end.
ತದಕ್ಷಯಂ ಮಹದ್ದುಃಖಂ ನೋತ್ಸಹೇ ಸಹಿತುಂ ಚಿರಮ್.

ವಿಪ್ರಕಾರಂ ಸಪತ್ನೀನಾಮೇವಂ ಜೀರ್ಣಾಪಿ ರಾಘವ!৷৷2.20.46৷৷


ರಾಘವ Rama, ತತ್ for that reason, ಏವಮ್ like this, ಜೀರ್ಣಾಪಿ grown old, ಅಕ್ಷಯಮ್ unending, ಮಹತ್ great, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrow, ಸಪತ್ನೀನಾಮ್ of my co-wives, ವಿಪ್ರಕಾರಮ್ insult, ಚಿರಮ್ for long time, ಸಹಿತುಮ್ to tolerate, ನೋತ್ಸಹೇ do not desire.

Therefore, O Rama, I cannot at this old age endure this great, endless sorrow and the insults from co-wives for long.
ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ ತವ ಮುಖಂ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಶಶಿಪ್ರಭಮ್.

ಕೃಪಣಾ ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಕಥಂ ಕೃಪಣಜೀವಿಕಾಮ್৷৷2.20.47৷৷


ಕೃಪಣಾ wretched I am, ತವ your, ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಶಶಿಪ್ರಭಮ್ as bright as the full Moon, ಮುಖಮ್ face, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ without beholding, ಕೃಪಣಜೀವಿಕಾಮ್ pitiable means of existence, ಕಥಮ್ how, ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will live.

Without beholding your face that is as bright as the full Moon, how can this wretched woman live this pitiable life?
ಉಪವಾಸೈಶ್ಚ ಯೋಗೈಶ್ಚ ಬಹುಭಿಶ್ಚ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮೈಃ.

ದುಃಖಂ ಸಂವರ್ಧಿತೋ ಮೋಘಂ ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ ದುರ್ಗತಯಾ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.20.48৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ದುರ್ಗತಯಾ ಮಯಾ by me so unfortunate, ಉಪವಾಸೈಶ್ಚ through fasts, ಯೋಗೈಶ್ಚ through meditation, ಬಹುಭಿಃ many, ಪರಿಶ್ರಮೈಶ್ಚ with efforts, ದುಃಖಮ್ with difficulty, ಮೋಘಮ್ in vain, ಸಂವರ್ಧಿತಃ have been brought up.

Through meditation, through fasts and with a great deal of efforts you have been brought up by this luckless (mother). But alas! this is all in vain.
ಸ್ಥಿರಂ ತು ಹೃದಯಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಮಮೇದಂ ಯನ್ನ ದೀರ್ಯತೇ.

ಪ್ರಾವೃಷೀವ ಮಹಾನದ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟಂ ಕೂಲಂ ನವಾಮ್ಭಸಾ৷৷2.20.49৷৷


ಪ್ರಾವೃಷಿ in rainy season, ನವಾಮ್ಭಸಾ with fresh water, ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟಮ್ contacted, ಮಹಾನದ್ಯಾಃ mighty river's, ಕೂಲಮ್ ಇವ like bank, ಮಮ my, ಇದಮ್ this, ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ಯತ್ for which reason, ನ ದೀರ್ಯತೇ does not break, ಸ್ಥಿರಮ್ firm (hard), ಮನ್ಯೇ am thinking.

I think my heart must be very firm (hard) like the bark of a great river which, touched by (a flood of) fresh water in the rainy season does not disintegrate.
ಮಮೈವ ನೂನಂ ಮರಣಂ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ

ನ ಚಾವಕಾಶೋಸ್ತಿ ಯಮಕ್ಷಯೇಮಮ.

ಯದನ್ತಕೋದ್ಯೈವ ನ ಮಾಂ ಜಿಹೀರ್ಷತಿ.

ಪ್ರಸಹ್ಯ ಸಿಂಹೋ ರುದತೀಂ ಮೃಗೀಮಿವ৷৷2.20.50৷৷


ಸಿಂಹಃ lion, ರುದತೀಮ್ crying, ಮೃಗೀಮಿವ like a female deer, ಮಾಮ್ myself, ಅನ್ತಕಃ Yama, (the god of death), ಪ್ರಸಹ್ಯ forcibly, ಅದ್ಯೈವ now itself, ಯತ್ since, ನ ಜಿಹೀರ್ಷತಿ is not willing to carry, ಮಮ to me, ನೂನಮ್ certainly, ಮರಣಮ್ death, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ does not befall, ಮಮ for me, ಯಮಕ್ಷಯೇ in the abode of (the god of death), Yama, ಅವಕಾಶಃ opportunity, ನಾಸ್ತಿ not there.

There is no room for me in the abode of Yama (the god of death). If he does not
carry me off forcibly like a lion carrying away a crying female deer, certainly there is no death for me.
ಸ್ಥಿರಂ ಹಿ ನೂನಂ ಹೃದಯಂ ಮಮಾಯಸಂ

ನ ಭಿದ್ಯತೇ ಯದ್ಭುವಿ ನಾವದೀರ್ಯತೇ.

ಅನೇನ ದುಃಖೇನ ಚ ದೇಹಮರ್ಪಿತಂ

ಧ್ರುವಂ ಹ್ಯಕಾಲೇ ಮರಣಂ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.20.51৷৷


ನೂನಮ್ assuredly, ಮಮ my, ಸ್ಥಿರಮ್ still (hard), ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ಆಯಸಮ್ is made of iron, ಯತ್ since, ನ ಭಿದ್ಯತೇ is not breaking, ಭುವಿ on this earth, ನಾವದೀರ್ಯತೇ does not disintegrate, ಅನೇನ this, ದುಃಖೇನ due to sorrow, ದೇಹಮ್ body, ಅರ್ಪಿತಮ್ surrendered (pervaded), ಅಕಾಲೇ untimely, ಮರಣಮ್ death, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ may not be possible, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ this is certain.

Surely my still (hard) heart is made of iron. It neither bursts nor breaks down on the ground. Pervaded by grief, there is no untimely death for this my body, too.
ಇದಂ ಹಿ ದುಃಖಂ ಯದನರ್ಥಕಾನಿ ಮೇ

ವ್ರತಾನಿ ದಾನಾನಿ ಚ ಸಂಯಮಾಶ್ಚ ಹಿ.

ತಪಶ್ಚ ತಪ್ತಂ ಯದಪತ್ಯಕಾರಣಾ-

ತ್ಸುನಿಷ್ಫಲಂ ಬೀಜಮಿವೋಪ್ತಮೂಷರೇ৷৷2.20.52৷৷


ಮೇ my, ವ್ರತಾನಿ mortifications, ದಾನಾನಿ ಚ charitable gifts, ಸಂಯಮಾಶ್ಚ self-restraint, ಅನರ್ಥಕಾನೀತಿ ಯತ್ are all meaningless, ಇದಮ್ this, ದುಃಖಮ್ regret, ಅಪತ್ಯಕಾರಣಾತ್ for the sake of progeny, ತಪ್ತಮ್ practised, ಯತ್ which, ತಪಃ asceticism, ಊಷರೇ in a barren land, ಉಪ್ತಮ್ sown, ಬೀಜಮ್ ಇವ like a seed, ಸುನಿಷ್ಫಲಮ್ was fruitless.

My regret is that all my mortifications, gifts of charity and penances are of no avail. Even the asceticism which I practised for the sake of progeny was fruitless like a seed sown in a barren land.
ಯದಿ ಹ್ಯಕಾಲೇ ಮರಣಂ ಸ್ವಯೇಚ್ಛಯಾ

ಲಭೇತ ಕಶ್ಚಿದ್ಗುರುದುಃಖಕರ್ಶಿತಃ.

ಗತಾಹಮದ್ಯೈವ ಪರೇತಸಂಸದಂ

ವಿನಾ ತ್ವಯಾ ಧೇನುರಿವಾತ್ಮಜೇನ ವೈ৷৷2.20.53৷৷


ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ any one, ಗುರುದುಃಖಕರ್ಶಿತಃ tormented with deep grief, ಸ್ವಯಾ of one's own, ಇಚ್ಛಯಾ by free will, ಅಕಾಲೇ untimely, ಮರಣಮ್ death, ಲಭೇತ ಯದಿ if he gets, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅದ್ಯೈವ now itself, ಆತ್ಮಜೇನ ವಿನಾ without offspring, ಧೇನುರಿವ like a cow, ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿನಾ without you, ಪರೇತಸಂಸದಮ್ to the
assembly of Yama, ಗತಾ would have reached.

If any one, tormented with great sorrow, could willingly commit suicide I would have gone the way to the assembly of Yama (the lord of death) right away as without you I will be now like a cow without a calf.
ಅಥಾಪಿ ಕಿಂ ಜೀವಿತಮದ್ಯ ಮೇ ವೃಥಾ

ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿನಾ ಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಪ್ರಭ.

ಅನುವ್ರಜಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವನಂ ತ್ವಯೈವ ಗೌ-

ಸ್ಸುದುರ್ಬಲಾ ವತ್ಸಮಿವಾನುಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾ৷৷2.20.54৷৷


ಅಥಾಪಿ even then, ಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಪ್ರಭ one having a countenance resembling the splendour of the full Moon, ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿನಾ without you, ಮೇ my, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಕಿಮ್ what use, ವೃಥಾ fruitless, ಸುದುರ್ಬಲಾ enfeebled, ಗೌಃ cow, ವತ್ಸಮ್ ಇವ like a calf, ಅನುಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾ in its affection, ತ್ವಯೈವ with you alone, ಅದ್ಯ now, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಅನುವ್ರಜಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall follow.

What is the use of this life now? What is life without you whose countenance glows like the full Moon? Like a cow emaciated by its search for the calf, I will follow you into the forest.
ಭೃಶಮಸುಖಮಮರ್ಷಿತಾ ತದಾ

ಬಹು ವಿಲಲಾಪ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ವ್ಯಸನಮುಪನಿಶಮ್ಯ ಸಾ ಮಹ-

ತ್ಸುತಮಿವ ಬದ್ಧಮವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಿನ್ನರೀ৷৷2.20.55৷৷


ಸಾ that (Kausalya), ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಮಹತ್ great, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ misfortune, ಉಪನಿಶಮ್ಯ having heard, ಬದ್ಧಮ್ is made captive, ಸುತಮ್ son, ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ looking on, ಕಿನ್ನರೀವ like a kinnari, ತದಾ then, ಅಸುಖಮ್ unhappy, ಅಮರ್ಷಿತಾ wrathful, ಭೃಶಮ್ extremely, ಬಹು much, ವಿಲಲಾಪ lamented.

Kausalya, filled with anger due to extreme sorrow reflected over her misfortune, and burst into harrowing tears, looking at Rama, like a kinnari looking at her grown-up son taken captive.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ವಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the twentieth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
