[Sita prays Rama to take her along with him to the forest.]

ಏವಮುಕ್ತಾ ತು ವೈದೇಹೀ ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಹಾ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದಿನೀ.

ಪ್ರಣಯಾದೇವ ಸಂಕ್ರುದ್ಧಾ ಭರ್ತಾರಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.27.1৷৷


ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದಿನೀ speaking pleasant words, ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಹಾ deserving affection, ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾ spoken to, ಪ್ರಣಯಾದೇವ out of love, ಸಂಕ್ರುದ್ಧಾ mighty angry, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ to her husband, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

When the sweet-tongued daughter of Videha (Sita) who deserved affection, heard this she was very angry out of her love (for Rama). She said these wordsto her husband (in reply):
ಕಿಮಿದಂ ಭಾಷಸೇ ರಾಮ! ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಲಘುತಯಾ ಧ್ರುವಮ್.

ತ್ವಯಾ ಯದಪಹಾಸ್ಯಂ ಮೇ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ನರವರಾತ್ಮಜ!৷৷2.27.2৷৷


ನರವರಾತ್ಮಜ O Prince, ರಾಮ Rama, ಯತ್ since, ಲಘುತಯಾ lightly, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ certainly, ಅಪಹಾಸ್ಯಮ್ fit to be ridiculed, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಮೇ to me (by me also), ಇದಮ್ these, ಕಿಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ what words, ಭಾಷಸೇ are speaking.

O Rama! why are you speaking so lightly? O prince! if you hear these very same words (spoken to you), you will ridicule me.
ಆರ್ಯಪುತ್ರ ಪಿತಾ ಮಾತಾ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ತಥಾ ಸ್ನುಷಾ.

ಸ್ವಾನಿ ಪುಣ್ಯಾನಿ ಭುಞ್ಜಾನಾಃ ಸ್ವಂ ಸ್ವಂ ಭಾಗ್ಯಮುಪಾಸತೇ৷৷2.27.3৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಪುತ್ರ O son of a noble monarch, ಪಿತಾ father, ಮಾತಾ mother, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ತಥಾ also, ಸ್ನುಷಾ daughter-in-law, ಸ್ವಾನಿ their own, ಪುಣ್ಯಾನಿ merits, ಭುಞ್ಜಾನಾಃ while enjoying, ಸ್ವಂ ಸ್ವಮ್ due to each of them, ಭಾಗ್ಯಮ್ destiny, ಉಪಾಸತೇ are receiving.

O son of a noble monarch! father, mother, brother, son or daughter-in-law (everybody) experiences the merit (of their past deeds) and receives what is due from destiny.
ಭರ್ತುರ್ಭಾಗ್ಯಂ ತು ಭಾರ್ಯೈಕಾ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ!.

ಅತಶ್ಚೈವಾಹಮಾದಿಷ್ಟಾ ವನೇ ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಮಿತ್ಯಪಿ৷৷2.27.4৷৷


ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ O best of men, (Rama), ಭರ್ತುರ್ಭಾಗ್ಯಂ the destiny of husband, ಏಕಾ only, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನೋತಿ receives, ಅತಶ್ಚ therefore, ಅಹಮಪಿ I also, ವನೇ in the forest, ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಮಿತಿ should dwell, ಅದಿಷ್ಟಾ ಏವ ordered.

A wife alone, O best of men shares the destiny of her husband. I am also therefore, ordered to dwell in the forest. ( a command to you is a command to me).
ನ ಪಿತಾ ನಾತ್ಮಜೋ ನಾತ್ಮಾ ನ ಮಾತಾ ನ ಸಖೀಜನಃ.

ಇಹ ಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ಚ ನಾರೀಣಾಂ ಪತಿರೇಕೋ ಗತಿಸ್ಸದಾ৷৷2.27.5৷৷


ಪಿತಾ father, ನ not, ಆತ್ಮಜಃ son, ನ not, ಆತ್ಮಾ own self, ನ not, ಮಾತಾ mother, ನ not, ಸಖೀಜನಃ friends, ನ not, ನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ for women, ಇಹ here, ಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ಚ in the next world also, ಸದಾ always, ಏಕಃ alone, ಪತಿಃ husband, ಗತಿಃ is the ultimate refuge.

It is not her father or mother, nor her son or herself, nor her friends but her husband alone gives a woman the permanent refuge in this or in the next world.
ಯದಿ ತ್ವಂ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತೋ ದುರ್ಗಂ ವನಮದ್ಯೈವ ರಾಘವ!.

ಅಗ್ರತಸ್ತೇ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಮೃದ್ನನ್ತೀ ಕುಶಕಣ್ಟಕಾನ್৷৷2.27.6৷৷


ರಾಘವ son of the Raghus (Rama), ಅದ್ಯೈವ now itself, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ದುರ್ಗಮ್ impenetrable, ವನಮ್ forest, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಯದಿ if you set out, ಕುಶಕಣ್ಟಕಾನ್ on thorns and on Kusa grass, ಮೃದ್ನನ್ತೀ crushing, ತೇ ಅಗ್ರತಃ in front of you, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall go.

O son of the Raghus! if you set out for the impenetrable forest now itself, I shall also go, walking ahead of you and crushing the thorns and (spiky) kusa grass (rendering the path comfortable for you to walk).
ಈರ್ಷ್ಯಾರೋಷೌ ಬಹಿಷ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ಭುಕ್ತಶೇಷಮಿವೋದಕಮ್.

ನಯ ಮಾಂ ವೀರ! ವಿಸ್ರಬ್ಧಃ ಪಾಪಂ ಮಯಿ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.27.7৷৷


ವೀರ! O Valiant one, ಈರ್ಷ್ಯಾರೋಷೌ anger and jealousy, ಭುಕ್ತಶೇಷಮ್ leftover after drinking, ಉದಕಮ್ ಇವ like water, ಬಹಿಷ್ಕೃತ್ಯ dismissing, ವಿಸ್ರಬ್ಧ: without hesitation, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನಯ take me, ಮಯಿ in me, ಪಾಪಮ್ fault, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ does not exist.

Do take me with you, O valiant one! without hesitation. Dismiss all anger and envy (from your mind) like the leftover water after drinking (anger because she disobeys and envy because she, too, like Rama, is willing to brave the hazards of forest life). There is no fault on my part.
ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾಗ್ರೈರ್ವಿಮಾನೈರ್ವಾ ವೈಹಾಯಸಗತೇನ ವಾ.

ಸರ್ವಾವಸ್ಥಾಗತಾ ಭರ್ತುಃ ಪಾದಚ್ಛಾಯಾ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.27.8৷৷


ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾಗ್ರೈಃ on top of mansions, ವಿಮಾನೈರ್ವಾ or in lovely palaces, ವೈಹಾಯಸಗತೇನ ವಾ moving in air, ಸರ್ವಾವಸ್ಥಾಗತಾ in all stages of life, ಭರ್ತುಃ husband's, ಪಾದಚ್ಛಾಯಾ shelter at his feet, ವಿಶಿಷ್ಯತೇ is preferable.

Every woman, everywhere be it on the top of mansions or in lovely palaces or flying in the sky should take shelter at his (her husband's) feet (or follow his footsteps).
ಅನುಶಿಷ್ಟಾಸ್ಮಿ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ವಿವಿಧಾಶ್ರಯಮ್.

ನಾಸ್ಮಿ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಿ ವಕ್ತವ್ಯಾ ವರ್ತಿತವ್ಯಂ ಯಥಾ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.27.9৷৷


ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ by mother, ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ by father, ವಿವಿಧಾಶ್ರಯಮ್ with regard to diverse duties, ಅನುಶಿಷ್ಟಾಅಸ್ಮಿ I have been instructed, ಮಯಾ by myself, ಯಥಾ in such a way, ವರ್ತಿತವ್ಯಮ್ to abide, ಸಂಪ್ರತಿ now, ವಕ್ತವ್ಯಾ ನಾಸ್ಮಿ need not be told to me.

I have been so instructed by my parents about diverse duties in all stages of life that I need not be told anything (about my duties) now.
ಅಹಂ ದುರ್ಗಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವನಂ ಪುರುಷವರ್ಜಿತಮ್.

ನಾನಾಮೃಗಗಣಾಕೀರ್ಣಂ ಶಾರ್ದೂಲವೃಕಸೇವಿತಮ್৷৷2.27.10৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ದುರ್ಗಮ್ impassable, ಪುರುಷವರ್ಜಿತಮ್ uninhabited by men, ನಾನಾಮೃಗಗಣಾಕೀರ್ಣಮ್ teeming with various kinds of animals, ಶಾರ್ದೂಲವೃಕಸೇವಿತಮ್ inhabited by tigers and wolves, ವನಮ್ forest, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall go.

I will also go to the forest, which is impassable, uninhabited, teeming with various kinds of animals and infested with tigers and wolves.
ಸುಖಂ ವನೇ ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯಥೈವ ಭವನೇ ಪಿತುಃ.

ಅಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ತೀ ತ್ರೀನ್ಲೋಕಾಂಶ್ಚ್ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ತೀ ಪತಿವ್ರತಮ್৷৷2.27.11৷৷


ತ್ರೀನ್ ಲೋಕಾನ್ the three worlds, ಅಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ತೀ without thinking, ಪತಿವ್ರತಮ್ duties to the husband, ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ತೀ while thinking, ವನೇ in the forest, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಭವನೇ in the palace, ಯಥೈವ the same way, ಸುಖಮ್ happily, ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall dwell.

Free from any anxiety about the three worlds, my only concern will be my duties towards my husband. I shall dwell as happily in the forest as I did in my father's abode.
ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಮಾಣಾ ತೇ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ನಿಯತಾ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀ.

ಸಹ ರಂಸ್ಯೇ ತ್ವಯಾ ವೀರ! ವನೇಷು ಮಧುಗನ್ಧಿಷು৷৷2.27.12৷৷


ವೀರ! O hero , ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ತೇ to you, ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಮಾಣಾ doing service, ನಿಯತಾ self- possessed, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀ observing vow of celibacy, ಮಧುಗನ್ಧಿಷು honey-scented, ವನೇಷು in forests, ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ with you, ರಂಸ್ಯೇ I shall sport.

I shall wander with you, O heroic Rama! in the honey-scented forest remaining self-possessed, always doing your service, and observing the vow of celibacy.
ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ ಶಕ್ತೋ ವನೇ ಕರ್ತುಂ ರಾಮ! ಸಮ್ಪರಿಪಾಲನಮ್.

ಅನ್ಯಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಜನಸ್ಯೇಹ ಕಿಂ ಪುನರ್ಮಮ ಮಾನದ!৷৷2.27.13৷৷


ಮಾನದ! O bestower of honour, ರಾಮ Rama, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಇಹ here, ವನೇ in the forest, ಅನ್ಯಸ್ಯ of others, ಜನಸ್ಯ man's, ಸಮ್ಪರಿಪಾಲನಮಪಿ protection also, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಶಕ್ತ: ಹಿ is capable, ಮಮ about my protection, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ why again say?

O respector of individuals! when you are capable of protecting other people in the forest, what of me?
ಸಹ ತ್ವಯಾ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವನಮದ್ಯ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ.

ನಾಹಂ ಶಕ್ಯಾ ಮಹಾಭಾಗ! ನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಮುದ್ಯತಾ৷৷2.27.14৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ today, ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ along with you, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall go, ಸಂಶಯಃ ನ no doubt about it, ಮಹಾಭಾಗ O distinguished one, ಉದ್ಯತಾ resolved, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಮ್ to restrain, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಾ not able.

There is no doudt that I shall go with you to the forest today. O distinguished one! I cannot be restrained from this resolve.
ಫಲಮೂಲಾಶನಾ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ.

ನ ತೇ ದುಃಖಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ನಿವಸನ್ತೀ ಸಹ ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.27.15৷৷


ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಫಲಮೂಲಾಶನಾ living on fruits and roots, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will become, ಸಂಶಯಃ ನ no doubt, ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ with you, ನಿವಸನ್ತೀ while living, ತೇ to you, ದುಃಖಮ್ hardship, ನ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will not do.

Do not doubt that I shall not be able to live on fruits and roots or that I will create difficulty for you while living with you.
ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಸರಿತಶ್ಶೈಲಾನ್ಪಲ್ವಲಾನಿ ವನಾನಿ ಚ.

ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಸರ್ವತ್ರ ನಿರ್ಭೀತಾ ತ್ವಯಾ ನಾಥೇನ ಧೀಮತಾ৷৷2.27.16৷৷


ಧೀಮತಾ with the sagacious, ನಾಥೇನ by my lord, ತ್ವಯಾ along with you, ಸರ್ವತ್ರ everywhere, ನಿರ್ಭೀತಾ without fear, ಸರಿತಃ rivers, ಶೈಲಾನ್ mountains, ಪಲ್ವಲಾನಿ lakes and, ವನಾನಿ ಚ and the forests, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I wish.

Living with you sans fear, O my sagacious husband, I wish to see the rivers, mountains, lakes and forests here and there.
ಹಂಸಕಾರಣ್ಡವಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಃ ಪದ್ಮಿನೀಸ್ಸಾಧುಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾಃ.

ಇಚ್ಛೇಯಂ ಸುಖಿನೀ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ವೀರೇಣ ಸಙ್ಗತಾ৷৷2.27.17৷৷


ವೀರೇಣ by a warrior (like you), ತ್ವಯಾ with you, ಸಙ್ಗತಾ in company of, ಸುಖಿನೀ happy, ಹಂಸಕಾರಣ್ಡವಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಃ abounding in swans and ducks, ಸಾಧು ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾಃ fully bloomed, ಪದ್ಮಿನೀ: lotus ponds, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಚ್ಛೇಯಮ್ I wish.

I wish to enjoy the lotus lakes in full bloom, abounding in swans and ducks in the company of a brave husband like you.
ಅಭಿಷೇಕಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ತಾಸು ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಯತವ್ರತಾ.

ಸಹ ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷ! ರಂಸ್ಯೇ ಪರಮನನ್ದಿನೀ ৷৷2.27.18৷৷


ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷ! O large-eyed one, ಯತವ್ರತಾ observing such vows, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ daily, ತಾಸು in those lotus ponds, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಮ್ bathing, ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will take, ಪರಮನನ್ದಿನೀ attaining great happiness, ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ along with you, ರಂಸ್ಯೇ I will sport.

Observing such vows and bathing daily in the lotus lakes, I shall be very much happy to sport with you, O large-eyed one!
ಏವಂ ವರ್ಷಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಶತಂ ವಾಹಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ.

ವ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮಂ ನ ವೇತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸ್ವರ್ಗೋಪಿ ನ ಹಿ ಮೇ ಮತಃ৷৷2.27.19৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ with you, ವರ್ಷಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ a thousand years, ಶತಂ ವಾಪಿ or even a hundred thousand years (of living with you), ವ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮಮ್ bassing of time, ನ ವೇತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall not feel, ಮೇ to me, ಸ್ವರ್ಗ: ಅಪಿ even heaven, ನ ಮತಃ ಹಿ is not desirable.

Thus living in your company for a thousand years or even a hundred thousand years, I shall not feel the passing of time. I shall not desire even heaven.
ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇಪಿ ಚ ವಿನಾ ವಾಸೋ ಭವಿತಾ ಯದಿ ರಾಘವ.

ತ್ವಯಾ ಮಮ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ! ನಾಹಂ ತಮಪಿ ರೋಚಯೇ৷৷2.27.20৷৷


ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ O best of men, ರಾಘವ Rama, ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿನಾ without you, ಮಮ to me, ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇಪಿ even in heaven, ವಾಸಃ living, ಭವಿತಾ ಯದಿ if it were to happen, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಮಪಿ that one also, ನ ರೋಚಯೇ I
do not like.

O Raghava, tiger among men, if I were given heaven to live in without you, even that I shall not covet.
ಅಹಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವನಂ ಸುದುರ್ಗಮಂ

ಮೃಗಾಯುತಂ ವಾನರವಾರಣೈರ್ಯುತಮ್.

ವನೇ ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯಥಾ ಪಿತುರ್ಗೃಹೇ

ತವೈವ ಪಾದಾವುಪಗೃಹ್ಯ ಸಂಯತಾ৷৷2.27.21৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸುದುರ್ಗಮಮ್ highly impenetrable, ಮೃಗಾಯುತಮ್ full of animals, ವಾನರವಾರಣೈಃ with monkeys and elephants, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall go, ತವ your, ಪಾದಾವೇವ feet alone, ಉಪಗೃಹ್ಯ taking refuge, ಸಂಯತಾ restraining myself, ವನೇ in the forest, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಗೃಹೇ ಯಥಾ like in his house, ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall reside.

I shall go (along with you) to the highly impenetrable forest infested with animals like
monkeys and elephants. I shall live in the forest in (full) discipline as in my father's abode, taking shelter at your feet.
ಅನನ್ಯಭಾವಾಮನುರಕ್ತಚೇತಸಂ

ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿಯುಕ್ತಾಂ ಮರಣಾಯನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾಮ್.

ನಯಸ್ವ ಮಾಂ ಸಾಧು ಕುರುಷ್ವ ಯಾಚನಾಮ್

ನ ತೇ ಮಯಾತೋ ಗುರುತಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.27.22৷৷


ಅನನ್ಯಭಾವಾಮ್ without any other thought, ಅನುರಕ್ತಚೇತಸಮ್ with heart deeply attached, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವಿಯುಕ್ತಾಮ್ separated (from you), ಮರಣಾಯ for death, ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾಮ್ resolved, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನಯಸ್ವ take, ಯಾಚನಾಮ್ my prayer, ಸಾಧು be well-disposed, ಕುರುಷ್ವ do, ಅತಃ for that, ತೇ for you, ಮಯಾ by me, ಗುರುತಾ burden, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will not be.

Since I have no thought other than you and my heart is (irretrievably) attached to you
I have resolved to die if separated from you. Pray, be favourably disposed to take me. I shall not be a burden to you.
ತಥಾ ಬ್ರುವಾಣಾಮಪಿ ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲೋ

ನ ಚ ಸ್ಮ ಸೀತಾಂ ನೃವರೋ ನಿನೀಷತಿ.

ಉವಾಚ ಚೈನಾಂ ಬಹು ಸನ್ನಿವರ್ತನೇ

ವನೇ ನಿವಾಸಸ್ಯ ಚ ದುಃಖಿತಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿ৷৷2.27.23৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ devoted to righteousness, ನೃವರಃ best of men, ತಥಾ that way, ಬ್ರೂವಾಣಾಮಪಿ though speaking, ಸೀತಾಮ್ tp Sita, ನ ನಿನೀಷತಿ ಸ್ಮ was unwilling to take, ಸನ್ನಿವರ್ತನೇ to dissuade her, ಏನಾಮ್ to her, ವನೇ in the forest, ನಿವಾಸಸ್ಯ of stay, ದುಃಖಿತಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿ to the grieved, ಬಹು in many ways, ಉವಾಚ ಚ said.

Although Sita was thus appealing, Rama, devoted to righteousness, was (still) unwilling to take her. In order to dissuade her, he began to describe to the mournful Sita the many hardships of forest life.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತವಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
