[Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana goes to the residence of Kaikeyi--hears comments on the way.]

ದತ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ಸಹ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಭ್ಯೋ ಧನಂ ಬಹು.

ಜಗ್ಮತುಃ ಪಿತರಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ ರಾಘವೌ৷৷2.33.1৷৷


ರಾಘವೌ Rama and Lakshmana, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಭ್ಯಃ to brahmins, ಬಹು plenty, ಧನಮ್ wealth, ದತ್ವಾ having given (in charity), ಪಿತರಮ್ to father, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಜಗ್ಮತುಃ both of them set out.

After giving away plenty of wealth to brahmins in charity, Rama and Lakshmana along with Sita set out to see their father, king Dasaratha.
ತತೋ ಗೃಹೀತೇ ದುಷ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷೇ ತ್ವಶೋಭೇತಾಂ ತದಾಯುಧೇ.

ಮಾಲಾದಾಮಭಿರಾಬದ್ಧೇ ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಮಲಙ್ಕೃತೇ৷৷2.33.2৷৷


ತತಃ then, ದುಷ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷೇ dazzling, ಗೃಹೀತೇ held, ಸೀತಯಾ by Sita, ಮಾಲಾದಾಮಭಿಃ with garlands, ಅಬದ್ಧೇ bound, ಸಮಲಙ್ಕೃತೇ decorated, ತದಾಯುಥೇ pair of weapons of Rama and Lakshmana, ಅಶೋಭೇತಾಮ್ shone.

The pair of dazzling weapons held (by Rama and Lakshmana) looked splendid decorated with flower garlands by Sita.
ತತಃ ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಹರ್ಮ್ಯಾಣಿ ವಿಮಾನಶಿಖರಾಣಿ ಚ.

ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ ಜನಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನುದಾಸೀನೋ ವ್ಯಲೋಕಯತ್৷৷2.33.3৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ಜನಃ people, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಹರ್ಮ್ಯಾಣಿ palaces and mansions, ವಿಮಾನಶಿಖರಾಣಿ ಚ terraces of seven-storied buildings, ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ having climbed, ಉದಾಸೀನಃ
sad, ವ್ಯಲೋಕಯತ್ looked.

The rich climbed their palaces and mansions, terraces of seven-storied buildings and watched them sadly.
ನ ಹಿ ರಥ್ಯಾಃ ಸ್ಮ ಶಕ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಗನ್ತುಂ ಬಹುಜನಾಕುಲಾಃ.

ಆರುಹ್ಯ ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾನ್ ದೀನಾಃ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷2.33.4৷৷


ಬಹುಜನಾಕುಲಾಃ thronged with multitudes of citizens, ರಥ್ಯಾಃ streets, ಗನ್ತುಮ್ to walk, ನ ಶಕ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಸ್ಮ ಹಿ indeed were unable, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for that reason, ದೀನಾಃ miserable, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದನ್ the palace, ಆರುಹ್ಯ having ascended, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ were looking.

The streets were so thronged with multitudes of citizens that they were impassable. Therefore, people felt miserable and ascended their mansions and gazed at Rama.
ಪದಾತಿಂ ವರ್ಜಿತಚ್ಛತ್ರಂ ರಾಮಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಜನಾಸ್ತದಾ.

ಊಚುರ್ಬಹುವಿಧಾ ವಾಚ ಶ್ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚೇತಸಃ৷৷2.33.5৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಜನಾಃ people, ಪದಾತಿಮ್ pedestrian, ವರ್ಜಿತಚ್ಛತ್ರಮ್ without the (royal) umbrella, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚೇತಸಃ grief-stricken, ಬಹುವಿಧಾಃ in many ways, ವಾಚಃ words, ಊಚುಃ uttered.

Seeing Rama walking without the royal umbrella, people were very much shocked. They expressed their reaction in so many words:
ಯಂ ಯಾನ್ತಮನುಯಾತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಚತುರಙ್ಗಬಲಂ ಮಹತ್.

ತಮೇಕಂ ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮನುಯಾತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ৷৷2.33.6৷৷


ಯಾನ್ತಮ್ while going, ಯಮ್ whom, ಮಹತ್ powerful, ಚತುರಙ್ಗಬಲಮ್ army of four divisions, ಅನುಯಾತಿ ಸ್ಮ used to follow, ತಮ್ such, ಏಕಮ್ alone, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ along with Sita, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಅನುಯಾತಿ ಸ್ಮ followed.

Whenever Rama went out, powerful army of four divisions used to follow him. Today he is walking alone followed by Lakshmana and Sita.
ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಸ್ಯ ರಸಜ್ಞಃ ಸನ್ ಕಾಮಿನಾಂ ಚೈವ ಕಾಮದಃ.

ನೇಚ್ಛತ್ಯೇವಾನೃತಂ ಕರ್ತುಂ ಪಿತರಂ ಧರ್ಮಗೌರವಾತ್৷৷2.33.7৷৷


ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಸ್ಯ of affluence, ರಸಜ್ಞಃ ಸನ್ while enjoying, ಕಾಮಿನಾಮ್ for those who have desires, ಕಾಮದಃ ಚೈವ fulfiller of desires (Rama), ಧರ್ಮಗೌರವಾತ್ out of veneration for righteousness, ಪಿತರಂ to father, ಅನೃತಮ್ false, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to make, ನೇಚ್ಛತ್ಯೇವ does not wish.

Rama who enjoyed the comforts of affluence gratifies those who have desires. Out of veneration for righteousness, he does not want to prove his father false (to his promise).
ಯಾ ನ ಶಕ್ಯಾ ಪುರಾ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಭೂತೈರಾಕಾಶಗೈರಪಿ.

ತಾಮದ್ಯ ಸೀತಾಂ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಗತಾ ಜನಾಃ৷৷2.33.8৷৷


ಪುರಾ earlier, ಯಾ Sita, ಆಕಾಶಗೈಃ by those wandering in the sky (birds), ಭೂತೈರಪಿ creatures, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಾ not possible, ತಾಂ ಸೀತಾಮ್ to that Sita, ಅದ್ಯ now, ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಗತಾಃ those walking on the highway, ಜನಾಃ passers-by, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ are beholding.

It was not possible even for the creatures wandering in the sky (birds) to have a glimpse of Sita before. Now passers-by walking the highway can behold her.
ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗೋಚಿತಾಂ ಸೀತಾಂ ರಕ್ತಚನ್ದನಸೇವಿನೀಮ್.

ವರ್ಷಮುಷ್ಣಂ ಚ ಶೀತಂ ಚ ನೇಷ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಾಶು ವಿವರ್ಣತಾಮ್৷৷2.33.9৷৷


ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗೋಚಿತಾಮ್ used to fragrant unguents, ರಕ್ತಚನ್ದನ ಸೇವಿನೀಮ್ smeared with red sandalpaste, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ವರ್ಷಮ್ rain, ಉಷ್ಣಂ ಚ heat, ಶೀತಂ ಚ cold, ಆಶು quickly, ವಿವರ್ಣತಾಮ್ discoloured, ನೇಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will render.

Sita who used to apply fragrant unguents and smear the body with red-sandal
cream will now be exposed to the rain, the heat and the cold which will quickly discolour her body.
ಅದ್ಯ ನೂನಂ ದಶರಥಸ್ಸತ್ತ್ವಮಾವಿಶ್ಯ ಭಾಷತೇ.

ನ ಹಿ ರಾಜಾ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪುತ್ರಂ ವಿವಾಸಯಿತುಮರ್ಹತಿ৷৷2.33.10৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ today, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಸತ್ತ್ವಮ್ by evil spirit, ಆವಿಶ್ಯ after being possessed by, ಭಾಷತೇ is speaking, ರಾಜಾ king, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ವಿವಾಸಯಿತುಮ್ to banish, ನ ಅರ್ಹತಿ ಹಿ is not fit enough.

Surely king Dasaratha possessed of an evil spirit spoke the way he did today. Otherwise, should a king banish his beloved son?
ನಿರ್ಗುಣಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಕಥಂ ಸ್ಯಾದ್ವಿಪ್ರವಾಸನಮ್.

ಕಿಂ ಪುನರ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಲೋಕೋಯಂ ಜಿತೋ ವೃತ್ತೇನ ಕೇವಲಮ್৷৷2.33.11৷৷


ನಿರ್ಗುಣಸ್ಯಾಪಿ even one bereft of virtues, ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ of a son, ವಿಪ್ರವಾಸನಮ್ banishment, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಸ್ಯಾತ್ can it be, ಯಸ್ಯ whose, ವೃತ್ತೇನ ಕೇವಲಮ್ by good conduct alone, ಅಯಂ ಲೋಕಃ this world, ಜಿತಃ conquered, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ why to say again?

Even a son who is bereft of virtues cannot be banished, what to say about Rama, who by good conduct alone has conquered the world.
ಅನೃಶಂಸ್ಯಮನುಕ್ರೋಶಃ ಶ್ರುತಂ ಶೀಲಂ ದಮಶ್ಶಮಃ.

ರಾಘವಂ ಶೋಭಯನ್ತ್ಯೇತೇ ಷಡ್ಗುಣಾಃ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.33.12৷৷


ಆನೃಶಂಸ್ಯಮ್ harmlessness, ಅನುಕ್ರೋಶಃ compassion, ಶ್ರುತಮ್ learning, ಶೀಲಮ್ good conduct, ದಮಃ restraint of senses, ಶಮಃ self- control, ಏತೇ all these, ಷಟ್ six, ಗುಣಾಃ qualities, ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಮ್ greatest among men, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಶೋಭಯನ್ತಿ adorn.

Harmlessness, compassion, learning, good conduct, restraint of senses and self-control, all these six qualities adorn Rama, the greatest among men.
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತಸ್ಯೋಪಘಾತೇನ ಪ್ರಜಾಃ ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಾಃ.

ಔದಕಾನೀವ ಸತ್ತ್ವಾನಿ ಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮೇ ಸಲಿಲಸಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾತ್৷৷2.33.13৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for that reason, ತಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಉಪಘಾತೇನ by hurting, ಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮೇ in summer, ಸಲಿಲಸಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾತ್ due to drying up of water, ಔದಕಾನಿ aquatic, ಸತ್ತ್ವಾನೀವ like creatures, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ people, ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಾಃ were highly tormented.

Therefore, people are deeply pained to see Rama afflicted. They look like aquatic creatures in summer when the water dries up.
ಪೀಡಯಾ ಪೀಡಿತಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ಜಗದಸ್ಯ ಜಗತ್ಪತೇಃ.

ಮೂಲಸ್ಯೇವೋಪಘಾತೇನ ವೃಕ್ಷಃ ಪುಷ್ಪಫಲೋಪಗಃ৷৷2.33.14৷৷


ಜಗತ್ಪತೇಃ of the ruler of the earth, ಅಸ್ಯ this Rama's, ಪೀಡಯಾ on account of his suffering, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ಜಗತ್ earth, ಮೂಲಸ್ಯ at the root, ಉಪಘಾತೇನ by destruction, ಪುಷ್ಪಫಲೋಪಗಃ bearing flowers and fruits, ವೃಕ್ಷಃ ಇವ like a tree, ಪೀಡಿತಮ್ is distressed.

Just as severed at the root, an entire tree along with its fruits and flowers is destroyed, similarly the whole world gets afflicted when Rama, the ruler of the world, comes to harm.
ಮೂಲಂ ಹ್ಯೇಷ ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಸಾರೋ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ.

ಪುಷ್ಪಂ ಫಲಂ ಚ ಪತ್ರಂ ಚ ಶಾಖಾಶ್ಚಾಸ್ಯೇತರೇ ಜನಾಃ৷৷2.33.15৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಸಾರಃ the essence of dharma, ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ effulgent, ಏಷಃ this Rama, ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ of humanity, ಮೂಲಂ ಹಿ is root indeed, ಇತರೇ other, ಜನಾಃ people, ಅಸ್ಯ Rama's (like the trunk of a tree), ಪುಷ್ಪಮ್ flower, ಫಲಂ ಚ fruit as well, ಪತ್ರಂ ಚ leaf also, ಶಾಖಾಶ್ಚ branches.

Effulgent Rama personifies the essence of dharma. He is the root of (the tree of) humanity. The other people are connected with this tree like flowers, fruit, leaves and branches.
ತೇ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಇವ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಸಪತ್ನ್ಯ ಸ್ಸಹಬಾನ್ಧವಾಃ.

ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಮನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮೋ ಯೇನ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.33.16৷৷


ತೇ such men as we are, ಸಪತ್ನ್ಯಃ with (our) wives, ಸಹಬಾನ್ಧವಾಃ together with (our) relations, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಯೇನ on which (way), ಗಚ್ಛತಿ is going, ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಮ್ departing, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಇವ like Lakshmana, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ without delay, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮಃ we will follow.

Let all of us without delay along with our wives and relations follow Rama, like Lakshmana, wherever he goes.
ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಾಣಿ ಚ ಗೃಹಾಣಿ ಚ.

ಏಕದುಃಖಸುಖಾ ರಾಮಮನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್৷৷2.33.17৷৷


ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ gardens, ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಾಣಿ fields, ಗೃಹಾಣಿ ಚ houses also, ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ deserting, ಏಕ ದುಃಖಸುಖಾಃ experiencing the same joy and sorrow (as Rama), ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್ virtuous, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮಃ shall follow.

Deserting our gardens, fields and houses and experiencing the same joy and sorrow of the virtuous Rama, we shall follow him.
ಸಮುದ್ಧೃತನಿಧಾನಾನಿ ಪರಿಧ್ವಸ್ತಾಜಿರಾಣಿ ಚ.

ಉಪಾತ್ತ ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಾನಿ ಹೃತಸಾರಾಣಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷2.33.18৷৷

ರಜಸಾಭ್ಯವಕೀರ್ಣಾನಿ ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಾನಿ ದೈವತೈಃ.

ಮೂಷಕೈಃಪರಿಧಾವದ್ಭಿರುದ್ಬಿಲೈರಾವೃತಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.33.19৷৷

ಅಪೇತೋದಕಧೂಮಾನಿ ಹೀನಸಮ್ಮಾರ್ಜನಾನಿ ಚ.

ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟಬಲಿಕರ್ಮೇಜ್ಯಾಮನ್ತ್ರಹೋಮಜಪಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.33.20৷৷

ದುಷ್ಕಾಲೇನೇವ ಭಗ್ನಾನಿ ಭಿನ್ನಭಾಜನವನ್ತಿ ಚ.

ಅಸ್ಮಾತ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಾನಿ ವೇಶ್ಮಾನಿ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಪ್ರತಿಪದ್ಯತಾಮ್৷৷2.33.21৷৷


ಸಮುದ್ಧೃತನಿಧಾನಾನಿ with treasures unearthed, ಪರಿಧ್ವಸ್ತಾಜಿರಾಣಿ ಚ and ruined courtyards, ಉಪಾತ್ತ ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಾನಿ with wealth and foodgrains removed, ಸರ್ವಶಃ wholly, ಹೃತಸಾರಾಣಿ deprived of wealth, ರಜಸಾ with dust, ಅಭ್ಯವಕೀರ್ಣಾನಿ spread, ದೈವತೈಃ by gods, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಾನಿ abandoned, ಉದ್ಬಿಲೈಃ emerging out of burrows, ಪರಿಥಾವದ್ಭಿ: by those running quickly around, ಮೂಷಕೈಃ by rats, ಆವೃತಾನಿ ಚ filled with, ಅಪೇತೋದಕಧೂಮಾನಿ (houses) without water and without (emitting) smoke, ಹೀನಸಮ್ಮಾರ್ಜನಾನಿ ಚ also unswept, ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟಬಲಿಕರ್ಮೇಜ್ಯಾಮನ್ತ್ರಹೋಮಜಪಾನಿ ಚ absence of offerings, sacrifices, recitation of sacred hymns, libations, and invocations, ದುಷ್ಕಾಲೇನ famine, ಭಗ್ನಾನಿ ಇವ like dilapidated, ಭಿನ್ನಭಾಜನವನ್ತಿ ಚ places with broken utensils, ಅಸ್ಮತ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಾನಿ deserted by us, ವೇಶ್ಮಾನಿ homes, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಪ್ರತಿಪದ್ಯತಾಮ್ let her own.

Let Kaikeyi take possession of our deserted and dilapidated homes with ruined courtyards which seem as though struck by calamities. They are drained of wealth and foodgrains, covered with dust and abandoned by the gods. There is no water or smoke (from kitchen). They are infested with rats. They stand unswept. There foodgrains lie around rat-holes, and broken earthenwares lie scattered. There are no offerings, no sacrifices, no recitation of sacred hymns, no libations and no invocations.
ವನಂ ನಗರಮೇವಾಸ್ತು ಯೇನ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಅಸ್ಮಾಭಿಶ್ಚ ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಪುರಂ ಸಮ್ಪದ್ಯತಾಂ ವನಮ್৷৷2.33.22৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ scion of the Raghus, ಯೇನ wherever, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ is going, ವನಮೇವ forest itself, ನಗರಮ್ as city, ಅಸ್ತು shall be, ಅಸ್ಮಾಭಿಃ by us, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ deserted, ಪುರಂ ಚ the city also, ವನಮ್ as forest, ಸಮ್ಪದ್ಯತಾಮ್ may become.

Since the scion of the Raghu race is going to the forest, let that forest itself be our city and let the city deserted by us become the forest.
ಬಿಲಾನಿ ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಿಣ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಸಾನೂನಿ ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಃ.

ತ್ಯಜನ್ತ್ವಸ್ಮದ್ಭಯಾದ್ಭೀತಾ ಗಜಾಸ್ಸಿಂಹಾ ವನಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.33.23৷৷

ಅಸ್ಮತ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯನ್ತಾಂ ಸೇವ್ಯಮಾನಂ ತ್ಯಜನ್ತು ಚ.


ಸರ್ವೇ all, ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಿಣಃ fanged creatures, ಬಿಲಾನಿ lairs, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಃ animals and birds, ಸಾನೂನಿ slopes of mountain, ಗಜಾಃ elephants, ಸಿಂಹಾಃ lions, ವನಾನಿ ಚ the forests, ಅಸ್ಮದ್ಭಯಾತ್ due to the fear caused by our presence, ಭೀತಾಃ having been frightened, ತ್ಯಜಸ್ತು let them leave, ಅಸ್ಮತ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ left by us, ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯನ್ತಾಮ್ shall reach, ಸೇವ್ಯಮಾನಮ್ the place occupied by us, ತ್ಯಜನ್ತು ಚ desert.

Let all the fanged creatures leave their lairs, birds and animals the mountain slopes, lions and elephants, their haunts due to the fear caused by our presence and occupy the city left by us (on seeing us deserting).
ತೃಣಮಾಂಸ ಫಲಾದಾನಾಂ ದೇಶಂ ವ್ಯಾಲಮೃಗದ್ವಿಜಮ್৷৷2.33.24৷৷

ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯತಾಂ ಹಿ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಸಪುತ್ರಾ ಸಹ ಬಾನ್ಧವೈಃ.

ರಾಘವೇಣ ವನೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ವಯಂ ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮ ನಿರ್ವೃತಾಃ৷৷2.33.25৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಸಪುತ್ರಾ with her son, ಸಹಬಾನ್ಧವೈಃ with her relations, Rವ್ಯಾಲಮೃಗದ್ವಿಜಮ್ occupied by birds and wild animals, ತೃಣಮಾಂಸಫಲಾದಾನಾಮ್ of those animals subsisting on grass, fruits and flesh, ದೇಶಮ್ country, ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯತಾಂ ಹಿ be acquired, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ನಿರ್ವೃತಾಃ relieved, ರಾಘವೇಣ ಸಹ with Rama, ವನೇ in the forest, ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮ will live.

Let Kaikeyi along with her son and her relatives acquire that country which will be inhabited by birds and animals living on grass, fruits, and flesh. Withdrawn, we shall happily live in the forest along with Rama.
ಇತ್ಯೇವಂ ವಿವಿಧಾ ವಾಚೋ ನಾನಾಜನಸಮೀರಿತಾಃ.

ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ರಾಮಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಚ ನ ವಿಚಕ್ರೇಸ್ಯ ಮಾನಸಮ್৷৷2.33.26৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ this way, ನಾನಾಜನಸಮೀರಿತಾಃ uttered by various people, ವಿವಿಧಾಃ different, ವಾಚಃ words, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ heard, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಚ also having, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಮಾನಸಮ್ mind, ನ ವಿಚಕ್ರೇ did not deviate.

Such were the various words uttered by the people. Even after hearing them his (Rama's) mind remained unmoved (from his resolve).
ಸ ತು ವೇಶ್ಮ ಪಿತುರ್ದೂರಾತ್ಕೈಲಾಸಶಿಖರಪ್ರಭಮ್.

ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಮತ್ತಮಾತಙ್ಗವಿಕ್ರಮಃ৷৷2.33.27৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ dutiful, ಮತ್ತಮಾತಙ್ಗ ವಿಕ್ರಮಃ having the prowess of an intoxicated elephant, ಸಃ he (Rama), ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ಕೈಲಾಸಶಿಖರಪ್ರಭಮ್ resembling the splendour of the peak of Kailasa, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವೇಶ್ಮ palace, ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ reached.

Dutiful Rama, endowed with the prowess of an intoxicated elephant, approached the residence of his father that resembled from a distance the peak of mount Kailasa in splendour.
ವಿನೀತವೀರಪುರುಷಂ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ತು ನೃಪಾಲಯಮ್.

ದದರ್ಶಾವಸ್ಥಿತಂ ದೀನಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮವಿದೂರತಃ৷৷2.33.28৷৷


ವಿನೀತವೀರಪುರುಷಮ್ well-trained warriors, ನೃಪಾಲಯಮ್ royal palace, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ತು having entered, ಅವಿದೂರತಃ not from very far, ಅವಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing, ದೀನಮ್ dejected, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ Sumantra, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Rama entered the royal palace guarded by well-trained warriors and not from very far saw Sumantra who stood a picture of dejection.
ಪ್ರತೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣೋಪಿ ಜನಂ ತದಾರ್ತ-

ಮನಾರ್ತರೂಪಃ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ನಿವಾಥ.

ಜಗಾಮ ರಾಮಃ ಪಿತರಂ ದಿದೃಕ್ಷುಃ

ಪಿತುರ್ನಿದೇಶಂ ವಿಧಿವಚ್ಚಿಕೀರ್ಷುಃ৷৷2.33.29৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತದಾ then, ಆರ್ತಮ್ distressed, ಜನಮ್ people, ಪ್ರತೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣೋಪಿ even though observing,
ಅನಾರ್ತರೂಪಃ without revealing his sorrowful feelings, ಅಥ also, ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ನಿವ looking as if smiling, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ನಿದೇಶಮ್ palace, ವಿಧಿವತ್ in accordance with duty, ಚಿಕೀರ್ಷುಃ intent on carrying
out, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ದಿದೃಕ್ಷುಃ intent to see, ಜಗಾಮ went.

Even after observing the people in grief, Rama did not reveal his sorrowful feelings. Bound by duty he went in as if with a smile to see his father.
ತತ್ಪೂರ್ವಮೈಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕಸುತೋ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ

ರಾಮೋ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ವನಮಾರ್ತರೂಪಮ್.

ಐಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕಸುತಃ son of the Ikshvaku race, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ great intellectual, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ highly courageous, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತತ್ ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ for the first time, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ while departing, ತದಾ then, ಆರ್ತರೂಪಮ್ sad appearance, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ Sumantra, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಪಿತುಃ to father, ಪ್ರತಿಹಾರಣಾರ್ಥಮ್ to inform, ವ್ಯತಿಷ್ಠತ stood.

Seeing Sumantra stricken with grief for the first time the magnanimous Rama, scion of the Ikshvaku dynasty, on the way to the forest waited there for his father to be informed of his arrival.
ಪಿತುರ್ನಿದೇಶೇನ ತು ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ

ವನಪ್ರವೇಶೇ ಕೃತಬುದ್ಧಿನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ.

ಸ ರಾಘವಃ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮಬ್ರವೀ-

ನ್ನಿವೇದಯಸ್ವಾಗಮನಂ ನೃಪಾಯ ಮೇ৷৷2.33.31৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ lover of righteousness, ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ that son of the Raghus, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ರ್ನಿದೇಶೇನ by command, ವನಪ್ರವೇಶೇ to enter forest, ಕೃತಬುದ್ಧಿನಿಶ್ಚಯ: having made the decision, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ to Sumantra, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ನೃಪಾಯ to king, ಮೇ my, ಆಗಮನಮ್ arrival, ನಿವೇದಯಸ್ವ inform

Rama, lover of righteousness, determined to go to the forest in obedience to his
father's command said to Sumantra, Inform the king of my arrival.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ತ್ರಯಸ್ತ್ರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtythird sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
