[Lamentations of Dasaratha--Sumantra fetches the chariot at the command of the king- treasury officer gives valuable ornaments and garments to Sita---Kausalya instructs Sita on the obligations of a wife towards her husband-- Rama seeks leave of his other mothers.]

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ತು ವಚಃ ಶೃತ್ವಾ ಮುನಿವೇಶಧರಂ ಚ ತಮ್.

ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಹ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಭೀ ರಾಜಾ ವಿಗತಚೇತನಃ৷৷2.39.1৷৷

ನೈನಂ ದುಃಖೇನ ಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯವೈಕ್ಷತ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ನ ಚೈನಮಭಿಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಭಾಷತ ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ৷৷2.39.2৷৷


ಭಾರ್ಯಾಭಿಃ ಸಹ with his wives, ರಾಜಾ king, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವಚಃ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಮುನಿವೇಶಧರಮ್ dressed like an ascetic, ತಮ್ him, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಚ beholding, ವಿಗತಚೇತನ unconscious, ದುಃಖೇನ with grief, ಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ tormented, ಏನಮ್ this, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ನ ಪ್ರತ್ಯವೈಕ್ಷತ could not look at, ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ dejected mind, ಏನಮ್ him, ಅಭಿಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having looked at, ನ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಭಾಷತ ಚ did not reply.

After hearing Rama and beholding him in the robes of an ascetic, Dasaratha and his wives fell unconscious. With his body and mind afflicted with grief, Dasaratha could not look Rama in the face nor could he make a reply.

ಸ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಿವಾಸಂಜ್ಞೋ ದುಃಖಿತಶ್ಚ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ.

ವಿಲಲಾಪ ಮಹಾಬಾಹೂ ರಾಮಮೇವಾನುಚಿನ್ತಯನ್৷৷2.39.3৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ಸಃ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ that Lord of the world (king), ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ for a moment, ಅಸಂಜ್ಞಃ ಇವ almost unconscious, ದುಃಖಿತಶ್ಚ grieved, ರಾಮಮ್ ಏವ Rama alone, ಅನುಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ while brooding, ವಿಲಲಾಪ lamented.

The mighty-armed king lost consciousness for a moment and in grief lamented, brooding only over Rama.
ಮನ್ಯೇ ಖಲು ಮಯಾ ಪೂರ್ವಂ ವಿವತ್ಸಾ ಬಹವಃಕೃತಾಃ.

ಪ್ರಾಣಿನೋ ಹಿಂಸಿತಾ ವಾಪಿ ತಸ್ಮಾದಿದಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್৷৷2.39.4৷৷


ಮಯಾ by me, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ in the past, ಬಹವಃ many, ವಿವತ್ಸಾಃ deprived of children, ಕೃತಾಃ have been reduced, ವಾಪಿ or, ಪ್ರಾಣಿನಃ living beings, ಹಿಂಸಿತಾಃ are harmed, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಇದಮ್ this, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ has befallen, ಮನ್ಯೇ ಖಲು I deem.

'In the past I must have separated many from their children or harmed many living beings. That is why I think this calamity has befallen me.
ನ ತ್ವೇವಾನಾಗತೇ ಕಾಲೇ ದೇಹಾಚ್ಚ್ಯವತಿ ಜೀವಿತಮ್.

ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಮೃತ್ಯುರ್ಮಮ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.39.5৷৷

ಯೋಹಂ ಪಾವಕಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಪುರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್.

ವಿಹಾಯ ವಸನೇ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮೇ ತಾಪಸಾಚ್ಛಾದಮಾತ್ಮಜಮ್৷৷2.39.6৷৷


ಕಾಲೇ when the time, ಅನಾಗತೇ has not come yet, ದೇಹಾತ್ from body, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ನ ಚ್ಯವತಿ does not leave, ಯಃ ಅಹಮ್ such as I am, ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮೇ fine, ವಸನೇ clothes, ವಿಹಾಯ having removed, ತಾಪಸಾಚ್ಛಾದಮ್ wearing the robes of an ascetic, ಪಾವಕಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ like fire, ಆತ್ಮಜಮ್ son, ಪುರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing before me, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ while being tormented, ಮಮ to me, ಮೃತ್ಯುಃ death, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ does not come.

Unless the destined hour arrives, life does not leave the body. Therefore, even though I am tormented by Kaikeyi and even after seeing my son, standing before me, (bright) like fire, taking off his fine clothes and wearing the robes of an ascetic my end does not come.
ಏಕಸ್ಯಾಃ ಖಲು ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ ಕೃತೇಯಂ ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯತೇ ಜನಃ.

ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥೇ ಪ್ರಯತಮಾನಾಯಾಃ ಸಂಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ ನಿಕೃತಿಂ ತ್ವಿಮಾಮ್৷৷2.39.7৷৷


ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ನಿಕೃತಿಮ್ deception, ಸಂಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ resorting to, ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥೇ for selfish ends, ಪ್ರಯತಮಾನಾಯಾಃ in
pursuit of, ಏಕಸ್ಯಾಃ only one, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ ಕೃತೇಃ for Kaikeyi, ಅಯಂ ಜನಃ these people, ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯತೇ are suffering.

Only because of Kaikeyi who resorted to this deception in pursuit of selfish ends so many people are made to suffer.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ವಚನಂ ಬಾಷ್ಪೇಣ ಪಿಹಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ.

ರಾಮೇತಿ ಸಕೃದೇವೋಕ್ತ್ವಾ ವ್ಯಾಹರ್ತುಂ ನ ಶಶಾಕ ಹ৷৷2.39.8৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this manner, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having uttered, ಬಾಷ್ಪೇಣ with tears, ಪಿಹಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ with blurred vision, ರಾಮೇತಿ saying 'O Rama', ಸಕೃದೇವ only once, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ವ್ಯಾಹರ್ತುಮ್ to speak, ನ ಶಶಾಕ ಹ was not able.

Having uttered these words and muttering, 'O Rama' only once, his vision blurred by tears, he could speak no more.
ಸಂಜ್ಞಾಂ ತು ಪ್ರತಿಲಭ್ಯೈವ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಾತ್ಸ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ.

ನೇತ್ರಾಭ್ಯಾಮಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.39.9৷৷


ಸಃ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ that Lord of the world (king), ಮುಹೂರ್ತಾತ್ after a moment, ಸಂಜ್ಞಾಮ್ senses, ಪ್ರತಿಲಭ್ಯೈವ having regained, ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ filled with tears, ನೇತ್ರಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with eyes, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ to Sumanatra, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Regaining his senses in a moment, the king, with eyes filled with tears, said to Sumantra:
ಔಪವಾಹ್ಯಂ ರಥಂ ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತ್ವಮಾಯಾಹಿ ಹಯೋತ್ತಮೈಃ.

ಪ್ರಾಪಯೈನಂ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಮಿತೋ ಜನಪದಾತ್ಪರಮ್৷৷2.39.10৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಔಪವಾಹ್ಯಮ್ suitable for the journey, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಹಯೋತ್ತಮೈಃ with finest horses, ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ having harnessed, ಆಯಾಹಿ you shall come, ಏನಮ್ this, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಮ್ magnanimous, ಇತಃ from here, ಜನಪದಾತ್ this city, ಪರಮ್ place situated outside, ಪ್ರಾಪಯ reach.

Harness the finest horses to the chariot suitable for the journey, drive this magnanimous Rama to a place outside the city, and come back.
ಏವಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಗುಣವತಾಂ ಗುಣಾನಾಂ ಫಲಮುಚ್ಯತೇ.

ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ ಯತ್ಸಾಧುರ್ವೀರೋ ನಿರ್ವಾಸ್ಯತೇ ವನಮ್৷৷2.39.11৷৷


ಗುಣವತಾಮ್ of virtuous men, ಗುಣಾನಾಮ್ of virtues, ಫಲಮ್ reward, ಏವಮ್ this only, ಉಚ್ಯತೇ is said, ಮನ್ಯೇ I think, ಯತ್ since, ಸಾಧುಃ pious man, ವೀರಃ heroic, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ by mother, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ನಿರ್ವಾಸ್ಯತೇ is being banished.

That the pious and heroic son is banished by his parents to the forest is, I think, the reward to the virtuous for his virtues.
ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಚನಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ ಶೀಘ್ರವಿಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಯೋಜಯಿತ್ವಾಯಯೌ ತತ್ರ ರಥಮಶ್ವೈರಲಙ್ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.39.12৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಃ the king's, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having known, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ಶೀಘ್ರವಿಕ್ರಮಃ of swift steps, ಅಲಙ್ಕೃತಮ್ decorated, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಅಶ್ವೈಃ with horses, ಯೋಜಯಿತ್ವಾ yoked, ತತ್ರ there, ಆಯಯೌ came.

In obedience to the words of the king, Sumantra promptly harnessed the horses to a well-decorated chariot and brought it there.
ತಂ ರಥಂ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಸೂತ: ಕನಕಭೂಷಿತಮ್.

ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.39.13৷৷


ಸೂತಃ the charioteer (Sumantra), ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ with folded palms, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾಯ the king's son, ಕನಕಭೂಷಿತಮ್ decked in gold, ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ with excellent horses, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ harnessed, ತಂ ರಥಮ್ that chariot, ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ informed.

With folded palms Sumantra informed the prince that a chariot, decked in gold and
harnessed with excellent horses, is ready.
ರಾಜಾ ಸತ್ವರಮಾಹೂಯ ವ್ಯಾಪೃತಂ ವಿತ್ತಸಂಞ್ಚಯೇ.

ಉವಾಚ ದೇಶಕಾಲಜ್ಞೋ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಂ ಸರ್ವತ ಶ್ಶುಚಿಮ್৷৷2.39.14৷৷


ರಾಜಾ the king, ದೇಶಕಾಲಜ್ಞೋ aware of (the right) place and time, ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಮ್ firm, ಸರ್ವತಃ in every way, ಶುಚಿಮ್ honest, ವಿತ್ತಸಞ್ಚಯೇ in the treasury, ವ್ಯಾಪೃತಮ್ working as officer, ಸತ್ವರಮ್ hurriedly, ಆಹೂಯ having summoned, ಉವಾಚ said.

The king who was aware of the right place and time summoned hurriedly the treaury officer, who was firm and honest and said to him:
ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ ಚ ಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಣಿ ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ವರಾಣಿ ಚ.

ವರ್ಷಾಣ್ಯೇತಾನಿ ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯಾಯ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾನಯ৷৷2.39.15৷৷


ಏತಾನಿ these, ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯಾಯ calculating, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ for the princess of Videha (Sita), ಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಣಿ highly valuable, ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ ಚ garments, ವರಾಣಿ excellent, ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ಚ ornaments, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಆನಯ fetch.

Assess the (needs for) number of years the princess of Videha (Sita) is going to be in the forest, and fetch her quickly highly valuable garments and excellent ornaments.
ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣೈವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ಗತ್ವಾ ಕೋಶಗೃಹಂ ತತಃ.

ಪ್ರಾಯಚ್ಛತ್ಸರ್ವಮಾಹೃತ್ಯ ಸೀತಾಯೈ ಸಮಮೇವ ತತ್৷৷2.39.16৷৷


ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by the king, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ spoken to, ತತಃ then, ಕೋಶಗೃಹಮ್ to the treasury, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all those things, ಆಹೃತ್ಯ having brought, ತತ್ that, ಸಮಮೇವ wholly, ಸೀತಾಯೈ for Sita, ಪ್ರಾಯಚ್ಛತ್ gave.

Ordered thus by the king, the officer went to the treasury, collected all the things and presented them to Sita.
ಸಾ ಸುಜಾತಾ ಸುಜಾತಾನಿ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾ ವನಮ್.

ಭೂಷಯಾಮಾಸ ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ ತೈರ್ವಿಚಿತ್ರೈರ್ವಿಭೂಷಣೈಃ৷৷2.39.17৷৷


ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾ ready to depart, ಸುಜಾತಾ of noble birth, ಸಾ ವೈದೇಹಿ that princess from Videha (Sita), ಸುಜಾತಾನಿ beautiful, ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ limbs, ವಿಚಿತ್ರೈಃ sparkling, ತೈಃ ವಿಭೂಷಣೈಃ those ornaments, ಭೂಷಯಾಮಾಸ adorned.

That princess of noble birth from Videha adorned her beautiful limbs with the sparkling ornaments and got ready to depart for the forest.
ವ್ಯರಾಜಯತ ವೈದೇಹೀ ವೇಶ್ಮ ತತ್ಸುವಿಭೂಷಿತಾ.

ಉದ್ಯತೋಂಶುಮತಃ ಕಾಲೇ ಖಂ ಪ್ರಭೇವ ವಿವಸ್ವತಃ৷৷2.39.18৷৷


ಸುವಿಭೂಷಿತಾ well- adorned, ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ತತ್ ವೇಶ್ಮ that palace, ಕಾಲೇ at dawn, ಉದ್ಯತಃ rising, ವಿವಸ್ವತಃ Sun's, ಪ್ರಭಾ light, ಖಮಿವ like sky, ವ್ಯರಾಜಯತ got illumined.

Well-adorned Sita illumined the palace like the rising Sun lighting up the sky at dawn.
ತಾಂ ಭುಜಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ಶ್ವಶ್ರೂರ್ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಅನಾಚರನ್ತೀ ಕೃಪಣಂ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನ್ಯುಪಾಘ್ರಾಯ ಮೈಥಿಲೀಮ್৷৷2.39.19৷৷


ಶ್ವಶ್ರೂಃ mother-in-law ( Kausalya), ಕೃಪಣಮ್ compassionately, ಅನಾಚರನ್ತೀಮ್ not acting, ತಾಂ ಮೈಥಿಲೀಮ್ that princess from Mithila (Sita), ಭುಜಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with arms, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ having embraced, ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ on the forehead, ಉಪಾಘ್ರಾಯ after kissing, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Kausalya, Sita's mother-in-law, took her in her arms, embraced her, kissed her on the forehead, and said to her who conducted herself without evoking any pity.
ಅಸತ್ಯ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಲೋಕೇಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸತತಂ ಸತ್ಕೃತಾಃ ಪ್ರಿಯೈಃ.

ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ನಾನುಮನ್ಯನ್ತೇ ವಿನಿಪಾತಗತಂ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.39.20৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕೇ in all the worlds, ಅಸತ್ಯಃ untrue, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಪ್ರಿಯೈಃ by husbands, ಸತತಮ್ at all times, ಸತ್ಕೃತಾಃ though honoured, ವಿನಿಪಾತಗತಮ್ fallen into misfortunes, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ husband, ನಾನುಮನ್ಯನ್ತೇ do not agree (follow).

Those women who, although always gratified, do not follow their husband when they fall into misfortune, are regarded as unfaithful.
ಏಷ ಸ್ವಭಾವೋ ನಾರೀಣಾಮನುಭೂಯ ಪುರಾ ಸುಖಮ್.

ಅಲ್ಪಾಮಪ್ಯಾಪದಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ದುಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಜಹತ್ಯಪಿ৷৷2.39.21৷৷


ಪುರಾ earlier, ಸುಖಮ್ pleasures, ಅನುಭೂಯ having enjoyed, ಅಲ್ಪಾಮಪಿ though in small measure, ಆಪದಮ್ trouble, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having obtained, ದುಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ censure them, ಪ್ರಜಹತ್ಯಪಿ or even abandon them, ಏಷಃ this, ನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ women's, ಸ್ವಭಾವಃ nature.

Though they have enjoyed all pleasures (with their husbands) earlier, they censure them in the wake of the slightest trouble or even abandon them. This is the nature of women.
ಅಸತ್ಯಶೀಲಾ ವಿಕೃತಾ ದುರ್ಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಹೃದಯಾಸ್ಸದಾ.

ಯುವತ್ಯಃ ಪಾಪಸಂಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಾಃ ಕ್ಷಣಮಾತ್ರಾದ್ವಿರಾಗಿಣಃ৷৷2.39.22৷৷


ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಾಃ evil-minded, ಯುವತ್ಯಃ young ladies, ಅಸತ್ಯಶೀಲಾಃ infidel, ವಿಕೃತಾಃ perverted ones, ತಥಾ also, ದುರ್ಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಹೃದಯಾಃ hard to read their hearts, ಕ್ಷಣಮಾತ್ರಾತ್ in an instant, ವಿರಾಗಿಣಃ are devoid of affection.

Evil-minded young ladies are infidels. They are of perverted nature. They are inscrutable. In an instant they lose their love (for their husbands).
ನ ಕುಲಂ ನ ಕೃತಂ ವಿದ್ಯಾ ನ ದತ್ತಂ ನಾಪಿ ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಹಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಗೃಹ್ಣಾತಿ ಹೃದಯಮನಿತ್ಯಹೃದಯಾ ಹಿ ತಾಃ৷৷2.39.23৷৷


ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ women's, ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ಕುಲಮ್ family tradition, ನ ಗೃಹ್ಣಾತಿ does not attract, ಕೃತಮ್ benefit received, ನ not, ವಿದ್ಯಾ education, ದತ್ತಮ್ gifts, ನ not, ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಹಃ ಅಪಿ not even accumulated wealth, ನ not, ತಾಃ those, ಅನಿತ್ಯಹೃದಯಾಃ ಹಿ unstable minds indeed.

Neither family traditions nor benefits received, nor education nor affection nor gifts nor even accumulated wealth attract women's hearts. Their minds are unstable indeed.
ಸಾಧ್ವೀನಾಂ ಹಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಾನಾಂ ತು ಶೀಲೇ ಸತ್ಯೇ ಶ್ರುತೇ ಶಮೇ.

ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಪವಿತ್ರಂ ಪರಮಂ ಪತಿರೇಕೋ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.39.24৷৷


ತು but, ಶೀಲೇ in chastity, ಸತ್ಯೇ in truth, ಶ್ರುತೇ in scriptures, ಶಮೇ in stability, ಸ್ಥಿತಾನಾಮ್ remaining fixed, ಸಾಧ್ವೀನಾಮ್ of virtuous ones, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ women, ಏಕಃ only, ಪತಿಃ husband, ಪರಮಮ್ supreme, ಪವಿತ್ರಮ್ as holy, ವಿಶಿಷ್ಯತೇ is distinguished.

But for those virtuous women whose minds are fixed in chastity, truth, scriptures and stability, the husband occupies a distinguished place and is considered supremely holy.
ಸ ತ್ವಯಾ ನಾವಮನ್ತವ್ಯಃ ಪುತ್ರಃ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೋ ಮಮ.

ತವ ದೈವತಮಸ್ತ್ವೇಷ ನಿರ್ಧನಃ ಸಧನೋಪಿ ವಾ৷৷2.39.25৷৷


ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಃ exiled, ಮಮ my, ಸಃ ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ನಾವಮನ್ತವ್ಯಃ is not to be underestimated, ನಿರ್ಧನಃ without wealth, ಸಧನೋಪಿ ವಾ or with wealth, ಏಷಃ he, ತವ your, ದೈವಮ್ ಅಸ್ತು be your god.

You must not underestimate my son in his exile. You must treat him as your god whether he is wealthy or not.
ವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ವಚನಂ ಸೀತಾ ತಸ್ಯಾ ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥಸಂಹಿತಮ್.

ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿರುವಾಚೇದಂ ಶ್ವಶ್ರೂಮಭಿಮುಖೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.39.26৷৷


ಸೀತಾ Sita, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥಸಂಹಿತಮ್ in conformity with dharma and artha, ವಚನಮ್ words, ವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ having understood, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಅಭಿಮುಖೇ facing her, ಸ್ಥಿತಾಮ್ standing, ಶ್ವಶ್ರೂಮ್ to her mother-in-law, ಇದಮ್ this word, ಉವಾಚ said.

Sita who understood the import of these words which were in conformity with dharma and artha, repiled to her mother-in-law facing her with folded palms:
ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ ಸರ್ವಮೇವಾಹಮಾರ್ಯಾ ಯದನುಶಾಸ್ತಿ ಮಾಮ್.

ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾಸ್ಮಿ ಯಥಾ ಭರ್ತುರ್ವರ್ತಿತವ್ಯಂ ಶ್ರುತಂ ಚ ಮೇ৷৷2.39.27৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಾ venerable one, ಯಥಾ as, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅನುಶಾಸ್ತಿ instructing, ಸರ್ವಮೇವ all that, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ shall do, ಭರ್ತುಃ in relation to my husband, ಯಥಾ how, ವರ್ತಿತವ್ಯಮ್ should conduct
myself, ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am aware, ಮೇ ಶ್ರುತಂ ಚ I have heard it earlier.

I shall do exactly all that the venerable mother-in-law instructs me. I have heard it earlier and have fully understood as to how I should conduct myself towards my husband.
ನ ಮಾಮಸಜ್ಜನೇನಾರ್ಯಾ ಸಮಾನಯಿತುಮರ್ಹತಿ.

ಧರ್ಮಾದ್ವಿಚಲಿತುಂ ನಾಹಮಲಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಾದಿವ ಪ್ರಭಾ৷৷2.39.28৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಾ the worshipful lady, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅಸಜ್ಜನೇನ with wicked people, ಸಮಾನಯಿತುಮ್ to equate, ನ ಅರ್ಹತಿ not fit for, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪ್ರಭಾ radiance, ಚನ್ದ್ರಾದಿವ like from the Moon, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ from virtue,
ವಿಚಲಿತುಮ್ to swerve, ನಾಲಮ್ I cannot.

My worshipful mother-in-law should not equate me with wicked people (women). I cannot swerve from the path of virtue like radiance which never leaves the Moon.
ನಾತನ್ತ್ರೀ ವಾದ್ಯತೇ ವೀಣಾ ನಾಚಕ್ರೋ ವರ್ತತೇ ರಥಃ.

ನಾಪತಿಸ್ಸುಖಮೇಧೇತ ಯಾ ಸ್ಯಾದಪಿ ಶತಾತ್ಮಜಾ৷৷2.39.29৷৷


ಅತನ್ತ್ರೀ without strings, ವೀಣಾ veena (lute), ನ ವಾದ್ಯತೇ cannot be played, ಅಚಕ್ರಃ without
wheels, ರಥ: a chariot, ನ ವರ್ತತೇ does not move, ಅಪತಿಃ without husband, ಶತಾತ್ಮಜಾ a hundred sons, ಸ್ಯಾದಪಿ even if she has, ಸುಖಮ್ happiness, ನ ಏಧೇತ one does not flourish.

A veena (lute) sans strings cannot be played. A chariot without wheels cannot move. Similarly, a woman without her husband finds no happiness even though she has one hundred sons.
ಮಿತಂ ದದಾತಿ ಹಿ ಪಿತಾ ಮಿತಂ ಮಾತಾ ಮಿತಂ ಸುತಃ.

ಅಮಿತಸ್ಯ ಹಿ ದಾತಾರಂ ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಕಾ ನ ಪೂಜಯೇತ್৷৷2.39.30৷৷


ಪಿತಾ father, ಮಿತಮ್ to a limited extent, ದದಾತಿ ಹಿ gives, ಮಾತಾ mother, ಸುತಃ son, ಅಮಿತಸ್ಯ unlimited extent, ದಾತಾರಮ್ giver, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ husband, ನ ಪೂಜಯೇತ್ who will not worship?

While the happiness that the father, mother and son give is limited, a husband gives unlimited happiness. Which wife will not worship such a husband?
ಸಾಹಮೇವಂ ಗತಾ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾ ಶ್ರುತಧರ್ಮಪರಾವರಾ.

ಆರ್ಯೇ! ಕಿಮವಮನ್ಯೇಹಂ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಭರ್ತಾ ಹಿ ದೈವತಮ್৷৷2.39.31৷৷


ಆರ್ಯೇ O exalted lady, ಏವಂ ಗತಾ one with these (ideals), ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾ an eminent woman, ಶ್ರುತಧರ್ಮಪರಾವರಾ having been instructed in ordinary and special obligations, ಸಾ ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಅವಮನ್ಯೇಯಮ್ understimate him, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ for women, ಭರ್ತಾ husband, ದೈವತಂ ಹಿ is god indeed.

Instructed about my obligations by an eminent lady (her mother?), imbued with these ideals, how can I, O exalted one, underestimate him (my husband)? For a woman the husband is a god indeed!
ಸೀತಾಯಾ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಹೃದಯಙ್ಗಮಮ್.

ಶುದ್ಧಸತ್ತ್ವಾ ಮುಮೋಚಾಶ್ರು ಸಹಸಾ ದುಃಖಹರ್ಷಜಮ್৷৷2.39.32৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಹೃದಯಙ್ಗಮಮ್ heart-stirring, ಸೀತಾಯಾಃ Sita's, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಶುದ್ಧಸತ್ತ್ವಾ with purified mind, ಸಹಸಾ instantaneously, ದುಃಖಹರ್ಷಜಮ್ produced out of joy
and grief, ಅಶ್ರು tears, ಮುಮೋಚ shed.

Listening to the heart-stirring words of Sita, Kausalya with her heart so pure burst instantaneously into tears of joy and grief.
ತಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರಭಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಮಾತೃಮಧ್ಯೇತಿಸತ್ಕೃತಾಮ್.

ರಾಮಃ ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಮಾತರಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.39.33৷৷


ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ extremely virtuous, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಾತೃಮಧ್ಯೇ in the midst of his mothers, ಅತಿಸತ್ಕೃತಾಮ್ highly revered lady, ತಾಮ್ that, ಮಾತರಮ್ to mother (Kausalya), ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded hands, ಅಭಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ having approached, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Most virtuous Rama approached his mother, that highly revered lady among all his mothers, and with folded hands said:
ಅಮ್ಬ! ಮಾ ದುಃಖಿತಾ ಭೂಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಪಶ್ಯ ತ್ವಂ ಪಿತರಂ ಮಮ৷৷

ಕ್ಷಯೋ ಹಿ ವನವಾಸಸ್ಯ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.39.34৷৷


ಅಮ್ಬ O mother, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ದುಃಖಿತಾ ಮಾ ಭೂಃ do not grieve, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮಮ ಪಿತರಮ್ my father, ಪಶ್ಯ look after, ವನವಾಸಸ್ಯ of my exile in the forest, ಕ್ಷಯಃ end, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ quickly, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will come.

O mother, do not grieve. Look after my father. My stay in the forest will soon come to an end.
ಸುಪ್ತಾಯಾಸ್ತೇ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ನವ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ಪಞ್ಚ ಚ.

ಸಾ ಸಮಗ್ರಮಿಹ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಮಾಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ ಸುಹೃದ್ವೃತಮ್৷৷2.39.35৷৷


ತೇ you, ಸುಪ್ತಾಯಾಃ while asleep, ನವ ಪಞ್ಚ ಚ nine plus five (fourteen), ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will pass off, ಸಾ you, ಇಹ here, (ಸಮ್) ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ have arrived, ಸುಹೃದ್ವೃತಮ್ surrounded by my friends, ಸಮಗ್ರಮ್ completely, ಮಾಮ್ me, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ will see.

Fourteen years will pass off like a night's sleep. You will see me come home safe
and sound, surrounded by my friends.
ಏತಾವದಭಿನೀತಾರ್ಥಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಸ ಜನನೀಂ ವಚಃ.

ತ್ರಯಶ್ಶತಶತಾರ್ಧಾಶ್ಚ ದದರ್ಶಾ ವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಾತರಃ৷৷2.39.36৷৷


ಸಃ he, ಅಭಿನೀತಾರ್ಥಮ್ with highly polished meaning, ಏತಾವತ್ up to this extent, ವಚಃ words, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having spoken, ಆವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ after looking at them, ತ್ರಯಃ three, ತ್ರಯಶ್ಶತಶತಾರ್ಧಾ: three hundred and fifty, ಮಾತರಃ ಚ mothers, ದದರ್ಶ he saw.

Speaking thus to his mother with highly polished words, he then turned his gaze at his other three hundred and fifty mothers.
ತಾ ಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಸ ತಥೈವಾರ್ತಾ ಮಾತೃ್ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ.

ಧರ್ಮಯುಕ್ತಮಿದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ನಿಜಗಾದ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.39.37৷৷


ಸಃ that, ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ Son of Dasaratha (Rama), ತಥೈವ similarly, ಆರ್ತಾಃ distressed, ತಾಃ those, ಮಾತೃರಪಿ mothers also, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಧರ್ಮಯುಕ್ತಮ್ steeped in virtue, ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ನಿಜಗಾದ uttered.

To all the mothers who stood deeply distressed with grief the son of Dasaratha spoke with folded hands these words suffused with virtue:
ಸಂವಾಸಾತ್ಪರುಷಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಜ್ಞಾನಾದ್ವಾಪಿ ಯತ್ಕೃತಮ್.

ತನ್ಮೇ ಸಮನುಜಾನೀತ ಸರ್ವಾಶ್ಚಾಮನ್ತ್ರಯಾಮಿ ವಃ৷৷2.39.38৷৷


ಸಂವಾಸಾತ್ by virtue of our living together, ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾದ್ವಾ or through ignorance, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ even a little, ಯತ್ any, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh gesture, ಕೃತಮ್ has been done, ಮೇ to me, ತತ್ that, ಸಮನುಜಾನೀತ forgive, ವಃ you, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯಾಮಿ I am seeking leave of you.

If I have been harsh towards you, on account of our living together or through ignorance may you forgive me. I (now) seek leave of you all.
ವಚನಂ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯೈತಧ್ದರ್ಮಯುಕ್ತಂ ಸಮಾಹಿತಮ್.

ಶುಶ್ರುವುಸ್ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಂಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ಶ್ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚೇತಸಃ৷৷2.39.39৷৷


ತಾಃ those, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ of the descendant of the Raghus (Rama's), ಧರ್ಮಯುಕ್ತಮ್ endowed with virtue, ಸಮಾಹಿತಮ್ well balanced, ಏತತ್ this, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚೇತಸಃ senses afflicted by grief, ಶುಶ್ರುವುಃ heard.

All the women with their senses afflicted by grief heard the virtuous and well-balanced words of the scion of the Raghu race:
ಜಜ್ಞೇಥ ತಾಸಾಂ ಸನ್ನಾದಃ ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀನಾಮಿವ ನಿಸ್ವನಃ.

ಮಾನವೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಣಾಮೇವಂ ವದತಿ ರಾಘವೇ৷৷2.39.40৷৷


ರಾಘವೇ when Rama, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ವದತಿ while he was saying, ಅಥ thereafter, ತಾಸಾಮ್ of those women, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ of wives, ಸನ್ನಾದಃ cry, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀನಾಮ್ of female geese (or herons), ನಿಸ್ವನ: ಇವ like sound, ಜಜ್ಞೇ arose.

While Rama said so, there arose a loud cry of the wives of the king like the cry of the female herons.
ಮುರಜಪಣವಮೇಘಘೋಷವತ್

ದಶರಥವೇಶ್ಮ ಬಭೂವ ಯತ್ಪುರಾ.

ವಿಲಪಿತಪರಿದೇವನಾಕುಲಂ

ವ್ಯಸನಗತಂ ತದಭೂತ್ಸುದುಃಖಿತಮ್৷৷2.39.41৷৷


ಯತ್ ದಶರಥವೇಶ್ಮ Dasaratha's palace, ಪುರಾ earlier, ಮುರಜಪಣವಮೇಘಘೋಷವತ್ re-echoed with the sounds of drums and other musical instruments like rumbling of the cloud, ತತ್ that one, ವಿಲಪಿತಪರಿದೇವನಾಕುಲಮ್ filled with wailings and lamentations, ವ್ಯಸನಗತಮ್ trapped in calamity, ಸುದುಃಖಿತಮ್ ಅಭೂತ್ was filled with sorrow.

Dasaratha's palace which reverberated, like the rumblings of the cloud, with the sounds of drums and other musical instruments earlier, now immensely grief-sticken and trapped in calamity, is filled with wailings and lamentations.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕೋನಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyninth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
