Sloka & Translation

[Dasaratha sends Sumantra to bring Rama again-- briefs him on certain matters and sends him --- Rama visits Kausalya and informs her about the coronation and seeks her blessings.]

ಗತೇಷ್ವಥ ನೃಪೋ ಭೂಯಃ ಪೌರೇಷು ಸಹ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ.

ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತ್ವಾ ತತಶ್ಚಕ್ರೇ ನಿಶ್ಚಯಜ್ಞಸ್ಸನಿಶ್ಚಯಮ್৷৷2.4.1৷৷

ಶ್ವ ಏವ ಪುಷ್ಯೋ ಭವಿತಾಶ್ವೋಭಿಷೇಚ್ಯಸ್ತು ಮೇ ಸುತಃ.

ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜೀವತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯ ಇತಿ ಪ್ರಭುಃ৷৷2.4.2৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಪೌರೇಷು citizens, ಗತೇಷು ಸತ್ಸು had departed, ನಿಶ್ಚಯಜ್ಞಃ knows how to take decisions, ಪ್ರಭುಃ Lord, ನೃಪಃ king, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿ: ಸಹ together with counsellors, ಭೂಯಃ again, ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತ್ವಾ having consulted, ಶ್ವಃ ಏವ tomorrow itself, ಪುಷ್ಯಃ Pushya star, ಭವಿತಾ is in the ascendance, ರಾಜೀವತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ a man whose eyes resemble red lotus (petals), ಮೇ ಸುತಃ my son, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಚ್ಯಃ should be installed, ಇತಿ thus, ನಿಶ್ಚಯಮ್ decision, ಚಕ್ರೇ made.

After the citizens departed, the king, an expert in decision-making again consulted his counsellors and said, Tomorrow Pushya star is in the ascendence and my son, Rama (handsome) with copper-coloured eyes which resemble red lotus petals will be installed heir-apparent.
ಗತೇಷ್ವಥ ನೃಪೋ ಭೂಯಃ ಪೌರೇಷು ಸಹ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ.

ಅಥ thereafter, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಃ king Dasaratha, ಅನ್ತರ್ಗೃಹಮ್ inner apartment, ಆವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪುನಃ again, ಇಹ here, ಆನಯ bring him, ಸೂತಮ್ charioteer Sumantra, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯಾಮಾಸ ordered.

Therafter king Dasaratha on retiring to his private apartment, ordered Sumantra to
bring Rama once again.
ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ಸ ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಸೂತಃ ಪುನರುಪಾಯಯೌ.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಭವನಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ರಾಮಮಾನಯಿತುಂ ಪುನಃ৷৷2.4.4৷৷


ಸಃ ಸೂತಃ the charioteer, ತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ that order, ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ having received, ಪುನಃ again, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಆನಯಿತುಮ್ to fetch, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ speedily, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಭವನಮ್ palace, ಉಪಾಯಯೌ reached.

In obedience to the command of the king charioteer Sumantra set out speedily to the palace of Rama to fetch him back once again.
ದ್ವಾರ್ಸ್ಥೈರಾವೇದಿತಂ ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಾಯಾಗಮನಂ ಪುನಃ.

ಶ್ರುತ್ವೈವ ಚಾಪಿ ರಾಮಸ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಶಙ್ಕಾನ್ವಿತೋಭವತ್৷৷2.4.5৷৷


ಪುನಃ again, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಆಗಮನಮ್ arrival, ದ್ವಾಃ ಸ್ಧೈಃ by door-keepers, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಆವೇದಿತಮ್ was reported, ತಮ್ him, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ had arrived, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಏವ on listening, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಶಙ್ಕಾನ್ವಿತಃ ಅಭವತ್ was filled with apprehensions.

The door-keepers informed Rama of Sumantra's arrival. As soon as he learnt that Sumantra was back again, Rama was filled with apprehensions.
ಪ್ರವೇಶ್ಯ ಚೈನಂ ತ್ವರಿತಂ ರಾಮೋ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಯದಾಗಮನಕೃತ್ಯಂ ತೇ ಭೂಯಸ್ತದ್ಬ್ರೂಹ್ಯಶೇಷತಃ৷৷2.4.6৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಏನಮ್ him, ತ್ವರಿತಮ್ quickly ಪ್ರವೇಶ್ಯ having admitted , ವಚನಮ್ words ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಭೂಯಃ again, ತೇ your, ಆಗಮನಕೃತ್ಯಮ್ purpose of coming back, ಯತ್ whatever is there ತತ್ that one, ಅಶೇಷತಃ completely, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell

Rama got Sumantra admitted and said to him, What is the purpose of your coming back so quickly ? Tell me whatever is there without holding back.
ತಮುವಾಚ ತತ ಸ್ಸೂತೋ ರಾಜಾ ತ್ವಾಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ.

ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಮಾಣಮತ್ರ ತ್ವಂ ಗಮನಾಯೇತರಾಯ ವಾ৷৷2.4.7৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಸೂತಃ charioteer, ತಮ್ addressing him, ಉವಾಚ spoke, ರಾಜಾ king, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ desires, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಅತ್ರ in this matter, ಗಮನಾಯ either to go, ಇತರಾಯ ವಾ or otherwise, ತ್ವಮ್ you alone, ಪ್ರಮಾಣಮ್ are the authority.

Then Sumantra replied, 'The king desires to see you. To go or not to go, the decision is yours'.
ಇತಿ ಸೂತವಚ ಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಮೋಥ ತ್ವರಯಾನ್ವಿತಃ.

ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ರಾಜಭವನಂ ಪುನರ್ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ನರೇಶ್ವರಮ್৷৷2.4.8৷৷


ಇತಿ thus, ಸೂತವಚಃ words of the charioteer, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅಥ afterwards, ತ್ವರಯಾ with haste, ಅನ್ವಿತಃ seized, ನರೇಶ್ವರಮ್ king, ಪುನಃ again, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ರಾಜಭವನಮ್ to royal palace, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ departed.

On hearing the words of the charioteer, Rama immediately set out for the royal palace to see the king again.
ತಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ರಾಮಂ ದಶರಥೋ ನೃಪಃ.

ಪ್ರವೇಶಯಾಮಾಸ ಗೃಹಂ ವಿವಕ್ಷುಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಮುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.4.9৷৷


ದಶರಥಃ ನೃಪಃ king Dasaratha, ತಮ್ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ಸಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ of his arrival, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ exceedingly, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasing, ವಿವಕ್ಷುಃ to tell, ಗೃಹಮ್ palace, ಪ್ರವೇಶಯಾಮಾಸ got him admitted.

Having heard of Rama's arrival, king Dasaratha got him admitted into his apartment to tell him something very pleasant.
ಪ್ರವಿಶನ್ನೇವ ಚ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ರಾಘವೋ ಭವನಂ ಪಿತುಃ.

ದದರ್ಶ ಪಿತರಂ ದೂರಾತ್ಪ್ರಣಿಪತ್ಯ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.4.10৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ glorious, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಭವನಮ್ palace, ಪ್ರವಿಶನ್ನೇವ while entering, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ folded hands, ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ಪಿತರಮ್ to his father, ಪ್ರಣಿಪತ್ಯ bending low in reverence, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

On entering his father's palace, glorious Rama, folded his hands and bent low in reverence from a distance and beheld his father.
ಪ್ರಣಮನ್ತಂ ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ ತಂ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ಭೂಮಿಪಃ.

ಪ್ರದಿಶ್ಯ ಚಾಸ್ಮೈ ರುಚಿರಮಾಸನಂ ಪುನರಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.4.11৷৷


ಭೂಮಿಪಃ protector of the earth (king Dasaratha), ಪ್ರಣಮನ್ತಮ್ as he (Rama) was bending low, ತಮ್ him, ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ lifted up, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ embracing, ಅಸ್ಮೈ him, ರುಚಿರಮ್ splendid, ಆಸನಮ್ seat, ಪ್ರದಿಶ್ಯ ಚ having offered, ಪುನಃ again, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

As he (Rama) was bending (with reverence), Dasaratha lifted him up and embraced him. Thereafter, he offered him a splendid seat and said again:
ರಾಮ! ವೃದ್ಧೋಸ್ಮಿ ದೀರ್ಘಾಯುರ್ಭುಕ್ತಾ ಭೋಗಾ ಮಯೇಪ್ಸಿತಾಃ.

ಅನ್ನವದ್ಭಿಃ ಕ್ರತುಶತೈ ಸ್ತಥೇಷ್ಟಂ ಭೂರಿದಕ್ಷಿಣೈಃ৷৷2.4.12৷৷


ರಾಮ O Rama!, ದೀರ್ಘಾಯುಃ one with long life, ವೃದ್ಧಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I have become old, ಮಯಾ by me, ಈಪ್ಸಿತಾಃ desires, ಭೋಗಾಃ pleasures, ಭುಕ್ತಾಃ enjoyed, ಅನ್ನವದ್ಭಿಃ cooked rice, ಭೂರಿದಕ್ಷಿಣೈಃ abundance of donations, ಕ್ರತುಶತೈಃ by hundreds of rituals, ಇಷ್ಟಮ್ is performed.

O Rama! after a long life I have grown old. I have enjoyed all the pleasures I desired. I have also performed hundreds of rituals which enjoined distribution of abundant food and gifts.
ಜಾತಮಿಷ್ಟಮಪತ್ಯಂ ಮೇ ತ್ವಮದ್ಯಾನುಪಮಂ ಭುವಿ.

ದತ್ತಮಿಷ್ಟಮಧೀತಂ ಚ ಮಯಾ ಪುರುಷಸತ್ತಮ!৷৷2.4.13৷৷


ಪುರೂಷಸತ್ತಮ! the very best of men( Rama), ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಭುವಿ on this earth, ಅನುಪಮಮ್ incomparable, ಇಷ್ಟಮ್ to my liking, ಅಪತ್ಯಮ್ as progeny, ಮೇ to me, ಜಾತಮ್ was born, ಮಯಾ by me, ದತ್ತಮ್ given (performed), ಇಷ್ಟಮ್ rituals (prescribed for kshatriyas), ಅಧೀತಂ ಚ studied (Vedas) also.

O best of men! I have obtained now a progeny of my liking in you and you have no equal on earth. I have given gifts, performed rituals and also studied (the Vedas) .
ಅನುಭೂತಾನಿ ಚೇಷ್ಟಾನಿ ಮಯಾ ವೀರ ಸುಖಾನ್ಯಪಿ.

ದೇವರ್ಷಿಪಿತೃವಿಪ್ರಾಣಾಮನೃಣೋಸ್ಮಿ ತಥಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.4.14৷৷


ವೀರ O mighty one!, ಮಯಾ by me, ಇಷ್ಟಾನಿ my favouite ones, ಸುಖಾನ್ಯಪಿ pleasures, ಅನುಭೂತಾನಿ were experienced, ದೇವರ್ಷಿಪಿತೃವಿಪ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ with regard to my obligations to gods, sages, my ancestors and brahmins, ತಥಾ and also, ಆತ್ಮನಃ for me, ಅನೃಣಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am freed from debt.

O mighty son! I have experienced all the pleasures I longed for. I redeemed my debt to the gods, the sages, my ancestors, brahmins and to myself.
ನ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿನ್ಮಮ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಂ ತವಾನ್ಯತ್ರಾಭಿಷೇಚನಾತ್.

ಅತೋ ಯತ್ತ್ವಾಮಹಂ ಬ್ರೂಯಾಂ ತನ್ಮೇ ತ್ವಂ ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.4.15৷৷


ತವ your, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಾತ್ ಅನ್ಯತ್ರ other than consecration, ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಮ್ duty, ನ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ nothing, ಮಮ my, ಅತಃ for that reason, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತ್ವಾಮ್ to you, ಯತ್ whatever, ಬ್ರೂಯಾಮ್ I shall tell you, ತತ್ that one, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮೇ to me, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to perform, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it behoves you.

There is nothing left to be done by me except your consecration Hence you should perform what I tell you.
ಅದ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕೃತಯಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಮಿಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ ನರಾಧಿಪಮ್.

ಅತಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಯುವರಾಜಾನಮಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಪುತ್ರಕ৷৷2.4.16৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ today, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಪ್ರಕೃತಯಃ the subjects, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನರಾಧಿಪಮ್ as king, ಇಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ wish, ಪುತ್ರಕ my dear son, ಅತಃ so, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಯುವರಾಜಾನಮ್ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I am going to install.

Today all the subjects expresed their desire to see you as their king. Therefore, my dear son, I wish to coronate you heir-apparent.
ಅಪಿ ಚಾದ್ಯಾಶುಭಾನ್ರಾಮ! ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ದಾರುಣಾನ್.

ಸನಿರ್ಘಾತಾ ದಿವೋಲ್ಕಾ ಚ ಪತತೀಹ ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಾ৷৷2.4.17৷৷


ರಾಮ O Rama!, ಅಪಿ ಚ also, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇ in a dream, ದಾರುಣಾನ್ frightening, ಅಶುಭಾನ್ inauspicious events, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ am seeing, ದಿವಾ during day time, ಸನಿರ್ಘಾತಾ accompanied by thunders, ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಾ generating great sounds, ಉಲ್ಕಾ meteor, ಇಹ here, ಪತತಿ is falling.

Moreover Rama, these days I see frightening and ominous events in dreams during day time. I see meteors accompanied by thunders falling, generating great sounds.
ಅವಷ್ಟಬ್ಧಂ ಚ ಮೇ ರಾಮ! ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಂ ದಾರುಣೈರ್ಗ್ರಹೈಃ.

ಆವೇದಯನ್ತಿ ದೈವಜ್ಞಾಃ ಸೂರ್ಯಾಙ್ಗಾರಕರಾಹುಭಿಃ৷৷2.4.18৷৷


ರಾಮ! O Rama!, ಸೂರ್ಯಾಙ್ಗಾರಕರಾಹುಭಿಃ Sun, Mars and Rahu, ದಾರುಣೈಃ formidable, ಗ್ರಹೈಃ planets, ಮೇ my, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಮ್ birth star, ಅವಷ್ಟಬ್ಧಮ್ have afflicted, ದೈವಜ್ಞಾಃ astrologers, ಆವೇದಯನ್ತಿ are communicating.

O Rama! astrologers also tell me that formidable planets Sun, Mars and Rahu have afflicted my birth star.
ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ ಹಿ ನಿಮಿತ್ತಾನಾಮೀದೃಶಾನಾಂ ಸಮುದ್ಭವೇ.

ರಾಜಾ ಹಿ ಮೃತ್ಯುಮಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಘೋರಾಂ ವಾಪದಮೃಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.4.19৷৷


ಈದೃಶಾನಾಮ್ when such, ನಿಮಿತ್ತಾನಾಮ್ of ominous signs, ಸಮುದ್ಭವೇ appear, ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ ಹಿ usually, ರಾಜಾ king, ಮೃತ್ಯುಮ್ death, ಆಪ್ನೋತಿ meets, ಘೋರಾಮ್ grave, ಆಪದಂ ವಾ or calamity, ಋಚ್ಛತಿ faces.

When such ominous signs appear, usually the king either meets with death or faces a grave calamity.
ತದ್ಯಾವದೇವ ಮೇ ಚೇತೋ ನ ವಿಮುಹ್ಯತಿ ರಾಘವ!.

ತಾವದೇವಾಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಸ್ವ ಚಲಾ ಹಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿನಾಂ ಮತಿಃ৷৷2.4.20৷৷


ತತ್ so, ರಾಘವ! son of the Raghus (Rama), ಮೇ my, ಚೇತಃ mind, ಯಾವದೇವ so long as, ನ ವಿಮು೩ಹ್ಯತಿ is not deluded, ತಾವದೇವ till then, ಅಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಸ್ವ be consecrated, ಪ್ರಾಣಿನಾಮ್ men's, ಮತಿಃ mind, ಚಲಾ ಹಿ is unstable indeed.

Therefore, before my mind is deluded I wish to see you installed as heir-apparent for a man's mind is unstable indeed, O Rama!.
ಅದ್ಯ ಚನ್ದ್ರೋಭ್ಯುಪಗತಃ ಪುಷ್ಯಾತ್ಪೂರ್ವಂ ಪುನರ್ವಸೂ.

ಶ್ವಃ ಪುಷ್ಯಯೋಗಂ ನಿಯತಂ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತೇ ದೈವಚಿನ್ತಕಾಃ৷৷2.4.21৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ today, ಚನ್ದ್ರಃ Moon, ಪುಷ್ಯಾತ್ than star Pushya, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ preceding, ಪುನರ್ವಸೂ constellation Punarvasu, ಅಭ್ಯುಪಗತಃ entered, ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ಪುಷ್ಯಯೋಗಮ್ in conjuction with Pushya constellation, ನಿಯತಮ್ certainly, ದೈವಚಿನ್ತಕಾಃ astrologers, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತೇ say

Today the Moon is in conjunction with the Punarvasu constellation. Tomorrow the Moon's conjunction with the Pushya constellation is certain and the astrologers say this auspicious time is highly suitable for the purpose of coronation.
ತತಃ ಪುಷ್ಯೇಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಸ್ವ ಮನಸ್ತ್ವರಯತೀವ ಮಾಮ್.

ಶ್ವಸ್ತ್ವಾಹಮಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ ಪರನ್ತಪ!৷৷2.4.22৷৷


ತತಃ therefore, ಪುಷ್ಯೇ in the Pushya constellation, ಅಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಸ್ವ be coronated , ಮನಃ my mind, ಮಾಮ್ me, ತ್ವರಯತೀವ looks hastening up, ಪರನ್ತಪ! O slayer of enemies, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall install.

My mind is hastening me saying,'Coronate Rama in the Pushya constellation itself'.
O Slayer of enemies, I shall install you heir-apparent tomorrow.
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತ್ವಯಾದ್ಯ ಪ್ರಭೃತಿ ನಿಶೇಯಂ ನಿಯತಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಸಹ ವಧ್ವೋಪವಸ್ತವ್ಯಾ ದರ್ಭಪ್ರಸ್ತರಶಾಯಿನಾ৷৷2.4.23৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಅದ್ಯಪ್ರಭೃತಿ from now, ಇಯಮ್ this, ನಿಶಾ night, ನಿಯತಾತ್ಮನಾ with self-restraint, ದರ್ಭಪ್ರಸ್ತರಶಾಯಿನಾ sleeping on a bed of darbha or kusha grass, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವಧ್ವಾ ಸಹ with daughter-in-law, Sita, ಉಪವಸ್ತವ್ಯಾ should be spent by undertaking fasting.

Therefore, you and my daughter-in-law (Sita) should fast tonight and sleep on a bed of darbha or kusha grass with self-restraint.
ಸುಹೃದಶ್ಚಾಪ್ರಮತ್ತಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ರಕ್ಷನ್ತ್ವದ್ಯ ಸಮನ್ತತಃ.

ಭವನ್ತಿ ಬಹು ವಿಘ್ನಾನಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಣ್ಯೇವಂವಿಧಾನಿ ಹಿ৷৷2.4.24৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ today, ಸುಹೃದಶ್ಚ your friends also, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ on all sides, ಅಪ್ರಮತ್ತಾಃ vigilantly, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ರಕ್ಷನ್ತು protect, ಏವಂ ವಿಧಾನಿ of this sort, ಕಾರ್ಯಾಣಿ acts, ಬಹುವಿಘ್ನಾನಿ many impediments, ಭವನ್ತಿ ಹಿ will happen, indeed.

Many impediments befall acts of this sort indeed. Alert your friends to protect you from all sides today onwards.
ವಿಪ್ರೋಷಿತಶ್ಚ ಭರತೋ ಯಾವದೇವ ಪುರಾದಿತಃ.

ತಾವದೇವಾಭಿಷೇಕಸ್ತೇ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲೋ ಮತೋ ಮಮ৷৷2.4.25৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಇತಃ ಪುರಾತ್ from this city, ಯಾವದೇವ while, ವಿಪ್ರೋಷಿತಃ away from, ತಾವದೇವ till that time, ತೇ to you, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಃ consecration, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಃ favourable time, ಮಮ(ಮೇ) my, ಮತಃ opinion.

While Bharata is away from the city, the time is favourable for your installation. This is my opinion.
ಕಾಮಂ ಖಲು ಸತಾಂ ವೃತ್ತೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ತೇ ಭರತಸ್ಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾನುವರ್ತೀ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶೋ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.4.26৷৷


ತೇ your, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಕಾಮಮ್ really, ಸತಾಂ ವೃತ್ತೇ on the path of the virtuous, ಸ್ಥಿತಃ stayed, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾನುವರ್ತೀ follows his elder brother, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶಃ compassionate, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ has controlled his senses.

It is true, your brother Bharata has adhered to the path of the virtuous and has followed his elder brother. No doubt, he is righteous, compassionate and self- controlled.
ಕಿನ್ತು ಚಿತ್ತಂ ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮನಿತ್ಯಮಿತಿ ಮೇ ಮತಿಃ.

ಸತಾಂ ಚ ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಾನಾಂ ಕೃತಶೋಭಿ ಚ ರಾಘವ!৷৷2.4.27৷৷


ಕಿನ್ತು yet, ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಾನಾಮ್ those fixed in righteousness, ಸತಾಂ ಚ virtuous people also, ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ men's, ಕೃತಶೋಭಿ made propitious, ಚಿತ್ತಮ್ mind, ಅನಿತ್ಯಮ್ ಇತಿ is fickle, ಮೇ my, ಮತಿಃ my opinion.

Yet I think even the propitious minds of those who are virtuous and whose thoughts are fixed in righteousness can also become fickle.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ ಸ್ಸೋಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತ ಶ್ಶ್ವೋಭಾವಿನ್ಯಭಿಷೇಚನೇ.

ವ್ರಜೇತಿ ರಾಮಃ ಪಿತರಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಯಾದ್ಗೃಹಮ್৷৷2.4.28৷৷


ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ಭಾವಿನಿ that will take place, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನೇ about installation ceremony, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ spoken of, ಸಃ that, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವ್ರಜ ಇತಿ 'you may go', ಅಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತಃ having been permitted, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having paid obeisance, ಗೃಹಮ್ to his abode, ಅಭ್ಯಯಾತ್ returned.

Having spoken to Rama about the installation ceremony fixed for the next day, he (Dasaratha) permitted him to leave saying, 'You may go'. Rama paid obeisance to his father and returned to his abode.
ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಚಾತ್ಮನೋ ವೇಶ್ಮರಾಜ್ಞೋದ್ದಿಷ್ಟೇಭಿಷೇಚನೇ.

ತತ್ಕ್ಷಣೇನ ವಿನಿರ್ಗಮ್ಯ ಮಾತುರನ್ತಪುರಂ ಯಯೌ৷৷2.4.29৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನೇ with regard to installation, ಉದ್ದಿಷ್ಟೇ when it was fixed, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his own, ವೇಶ್ಮ house, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ entered in, ತತ್ಕ್ಷಣೇನ immediately, ವಿನಿರ್ಗಮ್ಯ having left, ಮಾತುಃ mother's, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ inner apartment, ಯಯೌ departed.

With the installation fixed by the king, Rama went into his residence but left immediately to see his mother in her inner apartment.
ತತ್ರ ತಾಂ ಪ್ರವಣಾಮೇವ ಮಾತರಂ ಕ್ಷೌಮವಾಸಿನೀಮ್.

ವಾಗ್ಯತಾಂ ದೇವತಾಗಾರೇ ದದರ್ಶಾಯಾಚತೀಂ ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್৷৷2.4.30৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ದೇವತಾಗಾರೇ in the room (meant for worship) of the gods, ಪ್ರವಣಾಮೇವ engrossed in devotion, ಕ್ಷೌಮವಾಸಿನೀಮ್ wearing silk apparels, ವಾಗ್ಯತಾಮ್ silently, ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್ for royal fortune, ಆಯಾಚತೀಮ್ praying, ತಾಮ್ ಮಾತರಮ್ that mother, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

There he beheld his mother in silk apparel engrossed in silent prayer (to the gods) for his royal fortune in the room meant for the worship of the gods.
ಪ್ರಾಗೇವ ಚಾಗತಾ ತತ್ರ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಸೀತಾ ಚಾನಾಯಿತಾ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ರಾಮಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್৷৷2.4.31৷৷


ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ welcome tidings, ರಾಮಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ of installation of Rama, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಪ್ರಾಗೇವ preceding him (Rama), ತಥಾ also, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ Sumitra, ಆಗತಾ had arrived, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಸೀತಾ ಚ also Sita, ಆನಾಯಿತಾ had been summoned.

Hearing the welcome tidings of the installation of her beloved Rama, Sita too, had been brought in. Sumitra and Lakshmana had already arrived there.
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಾಲೇ ಹಿ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ತಸ್ಥಾವಾಮೀಲಿತೇಕ್ಷಣಾ.

ಸುಮಿತ್ರಯಾನ್ವಾಸ್ಯಮಾನಾ ಸೀತಯಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ৷৷2.4.32৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಾಲೇ at that moment, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಯಾ by Sumitra, ಸೀತಯಾ by Sita, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ by Lakshmana, ಅನ್ವಾಸ್ಯಮಾನಾ being accompanied, ಆಮೀಲಿತೇಕ್ಷಣಾ with half-closed eyes, ತಸ್ಥೌ stood.

At that moment Kausalya was meditating with her eyes half-closed. Sumitra, Lakshmana and Sita were attending on her.
ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್.

ಪ್ರಾಣಾಯಾಮೇನ ಪುರುಷಂ ಧ್ಯಾಯಮಾನಾ ಜನಾರ್ದನಮ್৷৷2.4.33৷৷


ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ In Pushya constellation, ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ son's, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ installation as heir-apparent, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಪ್ರಾಣಾಯಾಮೇನ by controlling the breath, ಪುರುಷಮ್ supreme god, ಜನಾರ್ದನಮ್ Lord Visnu, ಧ್ಯಾಯಮಾನಾ meditating upon.

Having heard that installation of her son as heir-apparent was planned in Pushya constellation, Kausalya was meditating upon the Supreme Person, Lord Visnu by controlling her breath (Pranayama).
ತಥಾ ಸನಿಯಮಾಮೇವ ಸೋಭಿಗಮ್ಯಾಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಚ.

ಉವಾಚ ವಚನಂ ರಾಮೋ ಹರ್ಷಯಂಸ್ತಾಮನಿನ್ದಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.4.34৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ತಥಾ in that manner, ಸನಿಯಮಾಮೇವ engaged in prayer, ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ having approached, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಚ having made reverential salutation, ತಾಮ್ her, ಹರ್ಷಯನ್ enhancing her joy, ಅನಿನ್ದಿತಾಂ ವಚನಮ್ words of praise, ಉವಾಚ said.

While she (Kausalya) was in that state of meditation, Rama approached her, offered reverential salutation and said these words of praise enhancing her joy:
ಅಮ್ಬ! ಪಿತ್ರಾ ನಿಯುಕ್ತೋಸ್ಮಿ ಪ್ರಜಾಪಾಲನಕರ್ಮಣಿ.

ಭವಿತಾ ಶ್ವೋಭಿಷೇಕೋ ಮೇ ಯಥಾ ಮೇ ಶಾಸನಂ ಪಿತುಃ৷৷2.4.35৷৷


ಅಮ್ಬ! O mother!, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಪ್ರಜಾಪಾಲನಕರ್ಮಣಿ in the act of governing the people, ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I have been assigned, ಮೇ my, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಶಾಸನಮ್ command, ಯಥಾ as mentioned, ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ಮೇ my, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಃ installation, ಭವಿತಾ will take place.

O mother! father has assigned me the duties of governing the subjects. My installation takes place tomorrow on my father's command.
ಸೀತಯಾಪ್ಯುಪವಸ್ತವ್ಯಾ ರಜನೀಯಂ ಮಯಾ ಸಹ.

ಏವಮೃತ್ವಿಗುಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯೈ ಸ್ಸಹ ಮಾಮುಕ್ತವಾನ್ಪಿತಾ৷৷2.4.36৷৷


ಇಯಮ್ this, ರಜನೀ night, ಸೀತಯಾಪಿ Sita also, ಮಯಾ ಸಹ along with me, ಉಪವಸ್ತವ್ಯಾ will fast, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಋತ್ವಿಗುಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯೈಃ ಸಹ with officiating priests and spiritual preceptors, ಪಿತಾ father, ಮಾಮ್ addressing me, ಉಕ್ತವಾನ್ has said.

Tonight, Sita, the officiating priests and preceptors will take to fasting along with me. This is what father told me.
ಯಾನಿ ಯಾನ್ಯತ್ರ ಯೋಗ್ಯಾನಿ ಶ್ವೋಭಾವಿನ್ಯಭಿಷೇಚನೇ.

ತಾನಿ ಮೇ ಮಙ್ಗಲಾನ್ಯದ್ಯ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಶ್ಚೈವ ಕಾರಯ৷৷2.4.37৷৷


ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ಭಾವಿನಿ that will take place in future, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನೇ in installation ceremony, ಯಾನಿ ಯಾನಿ whatever, ಮಙ್ಗಲಾನಿ auspicious rites, ಯೋಗ್ಯಾನಿ appropriate, ತಾನಿ them, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಮೇ to me, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ ಚೈವ and also to Vaidehi (Sita), ಕಾರಯ perform.

The installation takes place tomorrow. Perform today whatever auspicious rituals are appropriate (to the occasion) for me and Vaidehi (Sita).
ಏತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತು ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಚಿರಕಾಲಾಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿತಮ್.

ಹರ್ಷಬಾಷ್ಪಕಲಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಿದಂ ರಾಮಮಭಾಷತ৷৷2.4.38৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ತು Kausalya, ಚಿರಕಾಲಾಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿತಮ್ long cherished, ಏತತ್ this (tiding relating to installation), ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಹರ್ಷಬಾಷ್ಪಕಲಮ್ in sweet but indistinct words due to tears of joy, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ರಾಮಮ್ addressing Rama, ಅಭಾಷತ spoke.

Hearing this long cherished tiding (relating to installation) Kausalya spoke to Rama in sweet but indistinct words due to tears of joy.
ವತ್ಸ! ರಾಮ! ಚಿರಂ ಜೀವ ಹತಾಸ್ತೇ ಪರಿಪನ್ಥಿನಃ.

ಜ್ಞಾತೀನ್ಮೇ ತ್ವಂ ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಯುಕ್ತ ಸ್ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಯಾಶ್ಚ ನನ್ದಯ৷৷2.4.39৷৷


ವತ್ಸ! O child! ರಾಮ! O Rama!, ಚಿರಂ for a long time, ಜೀವ live, ತೇ your, ಪರಿಪನ್ಥಿನಃ enemies, ಹತಾಃ are destroyed, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಯುಕ್ತಃ endowed with prosperity, ಮೇ my, ಜ್ಞಾತೀನ್ relatives, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಯಾಃ ಚ and those of Sumitra, ನನ್ದಯ bring delight.

O my dear child, O Rama, may you live long! Let your enemies be destroyed. Endowed with prosperity, bring delight to my relatives and those of Sumitra.
ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೇ ಬತ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರೇ ಮಯಿ ಜಾತೋಸಿ ಪುತ್ರಕ.

ಯೇನ ತ್ವಯಾ ದಶರಥೋ ಗುಣೈರಾರಾಧಿತಃ ಪಿತಾ৷৷2.4.40৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಕ O my son! ಯೇನ by whom, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಪಿತಾ father, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಗುಣೈಃ with virtues, ಆರಾಧಿತಃ caused delight, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೇ under a lucky, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರೇ star, ಮಯಿ in me, ಜಾತಃ ಅಸಿ you were born, ಬತ Oh what a joy!

O Rama, my little child! you were born to me under a lucky star. On this account you have delighted your father Dasaratha with your virtues. What a joy !
ಅಮೋಘಂ ಬತ ಮೇ ಕ್ಷಾನ್ತಂ ಪುರುಷೇ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಕ್ಷಣೇ.

ಯೇಯಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುರಾಜ್ಯಶ್ರೀಃ ಪುತ್ರ ತ್ವಾಂ ಸಂಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.4.41৷৷


ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಕ್ಷಣೇ in the lotus-eyed, ಪುರುಷೇ in Visnu, ಮೇ my, ಕ್ಷಾನ್ತಮ್ enduring the pain (of observance of vows and fasting), ಅಮೋಘಮ್ are not in vain, ಬತ what a joy, ಪುತ್ರ son, ಯಾ ಇಯಮ್ such,
ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುರಾಜ್ಯಶ್ರೀಃ the royal fortune of Ikshvakus, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಸಂಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will take refuge in you.

O my son! my devotion to the lotus-eyed Visnu, enduring the pain (of observance of vows and fasting) have not gone in vain.The royal fortune of the Ikshvakus will pass on to you. What a joy!
ಇತ್ಯೇವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಮಾತ್ರೇದಂ ರಾಮೋ ಭ್ರಾತರಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಪ್ರಹ್ವಮಾಸೀನಮಭಿವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸ್ಮಯನ್ನಿವ৷৷2.4.42৷৷


ಮಾತ್ರಾ by mother, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ spoken, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪ್ರಹ್ವಮ್ in humble manner, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded palms, ಆಸೀನಮ್ sitting, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ brother, Lakshmana, ಅಭಿವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having looked at, ಸ್ಮಯನ್ನಿವ as if smiling, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Thus spoken to by his mother, Rama looked at his brother Lakshmana sitting humbly with folded palms and with a smile said to him:
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇಮಾಂ ಮಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ಪ್ರಶಾಧಿ ತ್ವಂ ವಸುನ್ಧರಾಮ್.

ದ್ವಿತೀಯಂ ಮೇನ್ತರಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ತ್ವಾಮಿಯಂ ಶ್ರೀರುಪಸ್ಥಿತಾ৷৷2.4.43৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ಮಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಥಮ್ along with me, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ವಸುನ್ಧರಾಮ್ earth, ಪ್ರಶಾಧಿ rule, ಮೇ my, ದ್ವಿತೀಯಮ್ second, ಅನ್ತರಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ the innermost self, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಇಯಮ್ ಶ್ರೀಃ this royal fortune, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಾ reached.

O Lakshmana! rule this earth together with me. This royal fortune also accrues to you, for you are my second innermost self.
ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ! ಭುಙ್ಕ್ಷ್ವ ಭೋಗಾಂತ್ಸ್ವಮಿಷ್ಟಾನ್ರಾಜ್ಯಫಲಾನಿ ಚ.

ಜೀವಿತಂ ಚ ಹಿ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚ ತ್ವದರ್ಥಮಭಿಕಾಮಯೇ৷৷2.4.44৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ! O son of Sumitra, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಇಷ್ಟಾನ್ desirable, ಭೋಗಾನ್ pleasures, ರಾಜ್ಯಫಲಾನಿ ಚ fruits of royalty, ಭುಙ್ಕ್ಷ್ವ you may enjoy, ಜೀವಿತಂ ಚ life also, ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚ as well as kingdom, ತ್ವದರ್ಥಮ್ for your sake, ಅಭಿಕಾಮಯೇ ಹಿ I am desiring.

O, son of Sumitra, enjoy all pleasures you wish and the fruits of royalty. I desire this life and kingdom for your sake only.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ರಾಮೋ ಮಾತರಾವಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಚ.

ಅಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ ಸೀತಾಂ ಚ ಜಗಾಮ ಸ್ವಂ ನಿವೇಶನಮ್৷৷2.4.45৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having spoken, ಮಾತರೌ to the two mothers, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಚ having made reverential salutation, ಸೀತಾಂ ಚ Sita also, ಅಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ having made her take leave of them, ಸ್ವಮ್ his own, ನಿವೇಶನಮ್ abode, ಜಗಾಮ went.

After speaking to Lakshmana, Rama made reverential salutation to the two mothers and on obtaining their consent to leave with Sita, returned to his abode.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಚತುರ್ಥಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
