[Rama, Lakshmana and Sita set out for the forest--wailing of citizens, queens and the king.]

ಅಥ ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ಸೀತಾ ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ.

ಉಪಸಙ್ಗೃಹ್ಯ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಚಕ್ರುರ್ದೀನಾ: ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್৷৷2.40.1৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಕೃತಾಜ್ಞಲಿಃ folded hands, ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama also, ಸೀತಾ ಚ Sita also, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ Lakshmana also, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಉಪಸಙ್ಗೃಹ್ಯ holding, ದೀನಾಃ forlom, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಚಕ್ರುಃ circumambulated him.

Thereafter, Sita, Rama and Lakshmana with folded palms in a forlom state touched (the feet of) the king and circumambulated him.
ತಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಸಮನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಸ್ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ.

ರಾಘವ ಶ್ಶೋಕಸಮ್ಮೂಢೋ ಜನನೀಮಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್৷৷2.40.2৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of duty, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ತಮ್ (to him), ಸಮನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ after taking leave of, ಶೋಕಸಮ್ಮೂಢಃ grief-stricken, ಜನನೀಮ್ to mother, ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್ paid obeisance.

Taking leave of Dasaratha, the righteous descendant of the Raghus (Rama) along with Sita paid obeisance to his mother Kausalya who was afflicted with deep grief.
ಅಅನ್ವಕ್ಷಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ಭ್ರಾತುಃ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್.

ಅಥ ಮಾತು ಸ್ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಯಾ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಚರಣೌ ಪುನಃ৷৷2.40.3৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ to his brother, ಅನ್ವಕ್ಷಮ್ following immediately, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ of Kausalya, ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್ paid obeisance, ಅಥ thereafter, ಮಾತುಃ of his mother, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಯಾಃ Sumitra's, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಪುನಃ again, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ held.

Immediately following Rama, his brother, Lakshmana also paid obeisance to Kausalya and, thereafter, held the feet of his own mother Sumitra.
ತಂ ವನ್ದಮಾನಂ ರುದತೀ ಮಾತಾ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಹಿತಕಾಮಾ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಂ ಮೂಧ್ನರ್ಯುಪಾಘ್ರಾಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್৷৷2.40.4৷৷


ಮಾತಾ mother, ವನ್ದಮಾನಮ್ who was paying homage, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮ್ her son, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಮ್ mighty-armed, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ of Lakshmana, ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ on his forehead, ಉಪಾಘ್ರಾಯ having smelt, ರುದತೀ wailing, ಹಿತಕಾಮಾ well-wisher, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

While the mighty-armed Lakshmana paid her homage, Sumitra wailed, kissed him on his forehead, wished him well and said:
ಸೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತ್ವಂ ವನವಾಸಾಯ ಸ್ವನುರಕ್ತಸ್ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನೇ.

ರಾಮೇ ಪ್ರಮಾದಂ ಮಾ ಕಾರ್ಷೀಃ ಪುತ್ರ! ಭ್ರಾತರಿ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.40.5৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O son, ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನೇ in beloved ones, ಸ್ವನುರಕ್ತಃ deeply attached, ವನವಾಸಾಯ to dwell in the forest, ಸೃಷ್ಟಃ born , ಗಚ್ಛತಿ leaving for the forest, ಭ್ರಾತರಿ with regard to your brother, ರಾಮೇ of Rama, ಪ್ರಮಾದಮ್ inattention, ಮಾ ಕಾರ್ಷೀಃ never do.

Although deeply attached to your beloved ones, O Son, you are born to dwell in the forest. Never be inattentive towards your brother Rama who is on his way (to the forest).
ವ್ಯಸನೀ ವಾ ಸಮೃದ್ಧೋ ವಾ ಗತಿರೇಷ ತವಾನಘ!.

ಏಷ ಲೋಕೇ ಸತಾಂ ಧರ್ಮೋ ಯಜ್ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠವಶಗೋ ಭವೇತ್৷৷2.40.6৷৷


ಅನಘ O sinless one, ವ್ಯಸನೀ ವಾ in adversity, ಸಮೃದ್ಧೋ ವಾ or in prosperity, ಏಷಃ this one, ತವ your, ಗತಿಃ is refuge, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠವಶಗಃ following the eldest brother, ಭವೇತ್ ಇತಿ ಯತ್ if it happens, ಏಷಃ this, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಸತಾಮ್ of virtuous men, ಧರ್ಮಃ is the duty.

Rama is your refuge in times of adversity or prosperity, O sinless one! To be
obedient to the eldest (brother) is the duty of virtuous men in this world.
ಇದಂ ಹಿ ವೃತ್ತಮುಚಿತಂ ಕುಲಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಸನಾತನಮ್.

ದಾನಂ ದೀಕ್ಷಾ ಚ ಯಜ್ಞೇಷು ತನುತ್ಯಾಗೋ ಮೃಧೇಷು ಚ৷৷2.40.7৷৷


ದಾನಮ್ charity, ಯಜ್ಞೇಷು in sacrifices, ದೀಕ್ಷಾ ಚ initiation, ಮೃಧೇಷು in battles, ತನುತ್ಯಾಗಃ ಚ giving one's body, ಇದಮ್ this one, ಅಸ್ಯ ಕುಲಸ್ಯ of this race, ಉಚಿತಮ್ befitting, ಸನಾತನಮ್ ancient, ವೃತ್ತಂ ಹಿ is the tradition.

Charity, initiation at sacrifices and yielding life in battles are the befitting ancient traditions prevailing in your race.
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ತ್ವೇವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಸಾ ಸಂಸಿದ್ಧಂ ಪ್ರಿಯರಾಘವಮ್.

ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಗಚ್ಛ ಗಚ್ಛೇತಿ ಪುನಃ ಪುನರುವಾಚ ತಮ್৷৷2.40.8৷৷


ಸಾ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ that Sumitra, ಪ್ರಿಯರಾಘವಮ್ to beloved Rama, ಸಂಸಿದ್ಧಮ್ fully prepared, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ Lakshmana, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಗಚ್ಛ ಗಚ್ಛ ಇತಿ exclaiming 'go, go', ತಮ್ to him, ಪುನಃ ಪುನಃ again and again, ಉವಾಚ said.

Having said this to Lakshmana Sumitra again and again said to her beloved Rama, who was fully prepared, 'Go, go'.
ರಾಮಂ ದಶರಥಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಮಾಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾಮ್.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮಟವೀಂ ವಿಧ್ದಿ ಗಚ್ಛ ತಾತ! ಯಥಾಸುಖಮ್৷৷2.40.9৷৷


ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ದಶರಥಮ್ as Dasaratha, ವಿದ್ಧಿ know, ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾಮ್ Sita, ಮಾಮ್ as me, ವಿದ್ಧಿ know, ಅಟವೀಮ್ forest, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ as Ayodhya, ವಿದ್ಧಿ know, ತಾತ child, ಯಥಾಸುಖಮ್ in peace, ಗಚ್ಛ go.

(To Lakshmana she said) Regard Rama as Dasaratha, Sita as me and the forest as Ayodhya. My child, go in peace.
ತತಃ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ವಿನೀತೋ ವಿನಯಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಮಾತಲಿರ್ವಾಸವಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.40.10৷৷


ತತಃ then, ವಿನೀತಃ humble, ವಿನಯಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ knower of politeness, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಮಾತಲಿಃ Matali, ವಾಸವಂ ಯಥಾ as Indra, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಮ್ to the scion of the Kakutstha race, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Then Sumantra who knows the ways of politeness and humility spoke to Rama, with folded hands as Matali did to Indra.
ರರಥಮಾರೋಹ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ ಮಹಾಯಶಃ.

ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಪಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯತ್ರ ಮಾಂ ರಾಮ! ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.40.11৷৷


ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ O Prince, ಮಹಾಯಶಃ O illustrious one, ರಥಂ chariot, ಆರೋಹ mount, ತೇ to you, ಭದ್ರಮ್ wish
you well, ಯತ್ರ whereever, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ you guide (one), ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ speedily, ಪ್ರಾಪಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will take.

O Illustrious prince, wish you well! Mount the chariot. I shall convey you speedily whereever you want.
ಚತುರ್ದಶ ಹಿ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಾನಿ ವನೇ ತ್ವಯಾ.

ತಾನ್ಯುಪಕ್ರಮಿತವ್ಯಾನಿ ಯಾನಿ ದೇವ್ಯಾಸಿ ಚೋದಿತಃ৷৷2.40.12৷৷


ಚತುರ್ದಶ fourteen, ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ years, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವನೇ in the forest, ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಾನಿವ you will dwell, ಯಾನಿ those, ದೇವ್ಯಾ by queen Kaikeyi, ಚೋದಿತಃ ಅಸಿ you have been directed, ತಾನಿ those, ಉಪಕ್ರಮಿತವ್ಯಾನಿ should be commenced.

You have been directed by Kaikeyi to live in the forest for fourteen years. Accordingly you must now commence counting those years as directed.
ತಂ ರಥಂ ಸೂರ್ಯಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಸೀತಾ ಹೃಷ್ಟೇನ ಚೇತಸಾ.

ಆರುರೋಹ ವರಾರೋಹಾ ಕೃತ್ವಾಲಙ್ಕಾರಮಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.40.13৷৷


ವರಾರೋಹಾ lovely limbs, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಆತ್ಮನಃ her person, ಅಲಙ್ಕಾರಮ್ decoration, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ಹೃಷ್ಟೇನ with pleased, ಚೇತಸಾ mind, ಸೂರ್ಯಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ resembling the Sun, ತಂ ರಥಮ್ that chariot, ಆರುರೋಹ boarded.

Sita of lovely limbs decorated herself and with a cheerful mind boarded the chariot which was shining like the Sun.
ಅಥೋ ಜ್ವಲನಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಚಾಮೀಕರವಿಭೂಷಿತಮ್!.

ತಮಾರುರುಹತುಸ್ತೂರ್ಣಂ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ৷৷2.40.14৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ both the brothers, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ Rama and Lakshmana, ಉಜ್ವಲನಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ appearing like blazing fire, ಚಾಮೀಕರವಿಭೂಷಿತಮ್ decorated with gold, ತಮ್ the chariot, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ immediately, ಆರುರುಹತುಃ both ascended.

Thereafter, Rama and Lakshmana also boarded that chariot decorated with gold and shining like blazing fire.
ವನವಾಸಂ ಹಿ ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಯ ವಾಸಾಂಸ್ಯಾಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ.

ಭರ್ತಾರಮನುಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯೈ ಸೀತಾಯೈ ಶ್ವಶುರೋ ದದೌ৷৷2.40.15৷৷


ಶ್ವಶುರಃ father-in-law (Dasaratha), ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ to the husband, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯೈ following, ಸೀತಾಯೈ to Sita, ವನವಾಸಮ್ going to dwell in the forest, ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಯ having counted, ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ clothes, ಆಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ ornamets, ದದೌ gave.

Father-in-law (Dasaratha) gave clothes and ornaments on the assessment of the number of years Sita was going to spend in the forest with her husband.
ತಥೈವಾಯುಧಜಾಲಾನಿ ಭ್ರಾತೃಭ್ಯಾಂ ಕವಚಾನಿ ಚ.

ರಥೋಪಸ್ಥೇ ಪ್ರತಿನ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಸಚರ್ಮ ಕಠಿನಂ ಚ ತತ್৷৷2.40.16৷৷

ಸೀತಾತೃತೀಯಾನಾರೂಢಾನ್ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ದೃಷ್ಟಮಚೋದಯತ್.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಸ್ಸಮ್ಮತಾನಶ್ವಾನ್ ವಾಯುವೇಗಸಮಾನ್ಜವೇ৷৷2.40.17৷৷


ತಥೈವ similarly, ಭ್ರಾತೃಭ್ಯಾಮ್ for brothers, ಆಯುಧಜಾಲಾನಿ multitude of weapons, ಕವಚಾನಿ armours, ಸಚರ್ಮ along with shield, ತತ್ ಕಠಿನಂ ಚ protective leather covering the hand, ರಥೋಪಸ್ಥೇ in the centre of the chariot, ಪ್ರತಿನ್ಯಸ್ಯ placing, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ಸೀತಾತೃತೀಯಾನ್ Rama and Lakshmana with Sita as third person, ಆರೂಢಾನ್ ascended, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸಮ್ಮತಾನ್ honoured, ಜವೇ in speed, ವಾಯುವೇಗ ಸಮಾನ್ like the speed of the wind, ಅಶ್ವಾನ್ horses, ಧೃಷ್ಟಮ್ briskly, ಅಚೋದಯತ್ drove them.

So also Dasaratha secured a multitude of weapons, shields and protective leather-coverings for hands and placed them at the centre of the chariot, for use by the brothers. When Sumantra ensured that Sita, Rama and Lakshmana boarded the chariot, he briskly hastened the horses which were as speedy as the wind.
ಪ್ರತಿಯಾತೇ ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಂ ಚಿರರಾತ್ರಾಯ ರಾಘವೇ.

ಬಭೂವ ನಗರೇ ಮೂರ್ಛಾ ಬಲಮೂರ್ಛಾ ಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.40.18৷৷


ರಾಘವೇ Rama, ಚಿರರಾತ್ರಾಯ for a long period, ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ to the great forest, ಪ್ರತಿಯಾತೇ having set out, ನಗರೇ in the city, ಮೂರ್ಛಾ ಬಭೂವ was deprived of senses, ಜನಸ್ಯ for men, ಬಲಮೂರ್ಛಾ ಚ were deprived of their strength.

Having seen Rama set out for the great forest for a long period, the city was stilled and men were enervated.
ತತ್ಸಮಾಕುಲಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಂ ಮತ್ತಸಙ್ಕುಪಿತದ್ವಿಪಮ್.

ಹಯಶಿಞ್ಜಿತನಿರ್ಘೋಷಂ ಪುರಮಾಸೀನ್ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಮ್৷৷2.40.19৷৷


ತತ್ ಪುರಮ್ that city, ಮತ್ತಸಙ್ಕುಪಿತದ್ವಿಪಮ್ with elephants intoxicated and provoked (by sounds), ಹಯಶಿಞ್ಜಿತನಿರ್ಘೋಷಮ್ the tinkling of bells and the neighing of the horses, ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಮ್ mighty roar, ಆಕುಲಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಮ್ ಆಸೀತ್ became flurried and distressed.

The city was distressed and flurried by the intoxicated elephants, provoked by the
mighty sound of the tinkling of bells and the neighing of the horses.
ತತ ಸ್ಸಬಾಲವೃದ್ಧಾ ಸಾ ಪುರೀ ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಾ.

ರಾಮಮೇವಾಭಿದುದ್ರಾವ ಘರ್ಮಾರ್ತಾ ಸಲಿಲಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.40.20৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಬಾಲವೃದ್ಧಾ including young and old, ಸಾ ಪುರೀ that city, ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಾ extremely afflicted, ಘರ್ಮಾರ್ತಃ oppressed with heat, ಸಲಿಲಂ ಯಥಾ like water, ರಾಮಮ್ ಏವ towards Rama only, ಅಭಿದುದ್ರಾವ ran.

Thereafter the extremely afflicted people of the city, including young and old alike, ran towards Rama like men oppressed with heat running for water.
ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಃ ಪೃಷ್ಠತಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಲಮ್ಬಮಾನಾಸ್ತದುನ್ಮುಖಾಃ.

ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ತಮೂಚುರ್ಭೃಶನಿಸ್ವನಾಃ৷৷2.40.21৷৷


ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಃ by his side, ಪೃಷ್ಠತಶ್ಚೈವ behind, ಲಮ್ಬಮಾನಾಃ hanging upon, ತದುನ್ಮುಖಾಃ facing him, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಾಃ faces covered with tears, ಭೃಶನಿಸ್ವನಾಃ heaving deeply, ತಮ್ addressing that Sumantra, ಊಚುಃ said.

All the people hanging from the chariot from behind and by the sides, heaving deeply, their faces covered with tears, thus addressed to Sumantra:
ಸಂಯಚ್ಛ ವಾಜಿನಾಂ ರಶ್ಮೀನ್ ಸೂತ! ಯಾಹಿ ಶನೈಶ್ಶನೈಃ.

ಮುಖಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ದುರ್ದರ್ಶಂ ನೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.40.22৷৷


ಸೂತ! O charioteer, ವಾಜಿನಾಮ್ horses, ರಶ್ಮೀನ್ reins, ಸಂಯಚ್ಛ control, ಶನೈಃ ಶನೈಃ slowly, slowly, ಯಾಹಿ go, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಮುಖಮ್ face, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ we will see, ನಃ for us, ದುರ್ದರ್ಶಮ್ difficult to see, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will become.

O charioteer, control the reins of the horses and go slow so that we may look at the face of Rama, for soon we will not be able to see him.
ಆಯಸಂ ಹೃದಯಂ ನೂನಂ ರಾಮಮಾತುರಸಂಶಯಮ್.

ಯದ್ದೇವಗರ್ಭಪ್ರತಿಮೇ ವನಂ ಯಾತಿ ನ ಭಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.40.23৷৷


ದೇವಗರ್ಭಪ್ರತಿಮೇ resembling the offspring of gods, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಯಾತಿ while going, ಯತ್ for what reason, ನ ಭಿದ್ಯತೇ does not break, ನೂನಮ್ certainly, ರಾಮಮಾತುಃ of the mother of Rama (Kausalya's), ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ಆಯಸಮ್ is made of iron, ಅಸಂಶಯಮ್ no doubt.

Alas, the heart of Kausalya whose son, Rama, resembles the offspring of the gods, does not break even though he is going to the forest! Undoubtedly it must be made of iron.
ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಾ ಹಿ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಛಾಯೇವಾನುಗತಾ ಪತಿಮ್.

ನ ಜಹಾತಿ ರತಾ ಧರ್ಮೇ ಮೇರುಮರ್ಕಪ್ರಭಾ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.40.24৷৷


ಧರ್ಮೇ in duty, ರತಾ attached, ಛಾಯೇವ like shadow, ಅನುಗತಾ following, ವೈದೇಹಿ Sita, ಅರ್ಕಪ್ರಭಾ sunlight, ಮೇರುಮ್ ಯಥಾ like mount Meru, ಪತಿಮ್ her husband, ನ ಜಹಾತಿ does not leave, ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಾ ಹಿ accomplished her purpose.

Sita, deeply attached to her duty, and with her desire fulfilled is following her husband like a shadow just as the sunlight which never leaves mount Meru.
ಅಹೋ! ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ! ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ ಸ್ಸತತಂ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದಿನಮ್.

ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ದೇವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಪರಿಚರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.40.25৷৷

With your desires fulfilled, O Lakshmana, you will attend to your god-like brother who always speaks pleasant words.
ಮಹತ್ಯೇಷಾ ಹಿ ತೇ ಸಿಧ್ದಿರೇಷ ಚಾಭ್ಯುದಯೋ ಮಹಾನ್.

ಏಷ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ಯ ಮಾರ್ಗಶ್ಚ ಯದೇನಮನುಗಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.40.26৷৷


ಏನಮ್ this Rama, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛಸಿ (ಇತಿ) ಯತ್ the fact that you are following him, ಏಷಾ that one, ತೇ for you, ಮಹತೀ great, ಸಿಧ್ದಿ: achievement, ಏಷಃ this, ಮಹಾನ್ great, ಅಭ್ಯುದಯಃ prosperity, ಏಷಃ this one, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ಯ to heaven, ಮಾರ್ಗಶ್ಚ way.

The very fact that you are following Rama is a great achievement and a great fortune for you. This, in fact, is the way to heaven.
ಏವಂ ವದನ್ತಸ್ತೇ ಸೋಢುಂ ನ ಶೇಕುರ್ಬಾಷ್ಪಮಾಗತಮ್.

ನರಾಸ್ತಮನುಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುನನ್ದನಮ್৷৷2.40.27৷৷


ಏವಮ್ thus, ವದನ್ತಃ speaking, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುನನ್ದನಮ್ delight of Ikshawaku dynasty, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved, ತಮ್
that Rama, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಃ following, ತೇ ನರಾಃ those people, ಆಗತಮ್ having arrived, ಬಾಷ್ಪಮ್ tears, ಸೋಢುಮ್ to bear, ನ ಶೇಕುಃ were not able.

Speaking thus, the people following their beloved Rama, the delight of the Ikshvaku dynasty, were not able to bear (restrain) the tears flowing from their eyes.
ಅಥ ರಾಜಾ ವೃತ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಭಿರ್ದೀನಾಭಿರ್ದೀನಚೇತನಃ.

ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪುತ್ರಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮೀತಿ ಬ್ರುವನ್ ಗೃಹಾತ್৷৷2.40.28৷৷


ಅಥ then, ದೀನಚೇತನಃ in desolation, ರಾಜಾ king, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮೀತಿ I wish to see him, ಬ್ರುವನ್ saying, ದೀನಾಭಿಃ distressed, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಭಿಃ by ladies, ವೃತಃ surrounded, ಗೃಹಾತ್ from the palace, ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ emerged.

ಯಥಾ ನಾದಃ ಕರೇಣೂನಾಂ ಬದ್ಧೇ ಮಹತಿ ಕುಞ್ಜರೇ৷৷2.40.29৷৷

He heard the women crying loudly in front like wailings of cow-elephants when their bull elephant is captured.

ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಃ ಶಶೀ ಕಾಲೇ ಗ್ರಹೇಣೋಪಪ್ಲುತೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.40.30৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ one of great prosperity, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ: born in the race of Kakutstha (Dasaratha), ಪಿತಾ father, ರಾಜಾ king, ತದಾ then, ಕಾಲೇ at that time, ಗ್ರಹೇಣ by Rahu, ಉಪಪ್ಲುತಃ eclipsed, ಪೂರ್ಣಶಶೀ ಯಥಾ like the full Moon, ಸನ್ನಃ ಅಭವತ್ was shrunk.

The king born in the race of Kakutstha, though bright, looked dull then like the full Moon eclipsed (by Rahu).

ಸೂತಂ ಸಞ್ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ ತ್ವರಿತಂ ವಾಹ್ಯತಾಮಿತಿ৷৷2.40.31৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ glorious one, ಅಚಿನ್ತ್ಯಾತ್ಮಾ unimaginable form, ಸಃ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ that son of Dasaratha, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತ್ವರಿತಮ್ fast, ವಾಹ್ಯತಾಮ್ ಇತಿ drive, ಸೂತಮ್ charioteer, ಸಞ್ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ exhorted.

The son of Dasaratha, glorious Rama of inconceivable courage, exhorted the charioteer to drive the chariot fast.
ರಾಮೋ ಯಾಹೀತಿ ಸೂತಂ ತಂ ತಿಷ್ಠೇತಿ ಸ ಜನಸ್ತದಾ.

ಉಭಯಂ ನಾಶಕತ್ಸೂತಃ ಕರ್ತುಮಧ್ವನಿ ಚೋದಿತಃ৷৷2.40.32৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಯಾಹಿ ಇತಿ saying 'drive on', ಜನಃ citizens, ತಿಷ್ಠೇತಿ 'stay, stay', ತಂ ಸೂತಮ್
to the charioteer, ಚೋದಿತಃ urged, ಸೂತಃ that charioteer, ಅಧ್ವನಿ on the way, ಉಭಯಮ್ both the acts, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ನಾಶಕತ್ was unable.

Urged by Rama to drive fast on the one hand and by the citizens to stay, on the other, the charioteer could do neither on the way.

ಪತಿತೈರಭ್ಯವಹಿತಂ ಪ್ರಶಶಾಮ ಮಹೀರಜಃ৷৷2.40.33৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹೌ mighty-armed, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ನಿರ್ಗಚ್ಛತಿ going away, ಅಭ್ಯವಹಿತಮ್ raised, ಮಹೀರಜಃ dust of the earth, ಪತಿತೈಃ by the fallen, ಪೌರಜನಾಶ್ರುಭಿಃ with the tears of the citizens, ಪ್ರಶಶಾಮ subsided.

As the mighty-armed Rama was going away, the dust raised from the earth subsided with the tears falling from the citizens' (eyes).
ರುದಿತಾಶ್ರುಪರಿದ್ಯೂನಂ ಹಾಹಾಕೃತಮಚೇತನಮ್.

ಪ್ರಯಾಣೇ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯಾಸೀತ್ಪುರಂ ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಮ್৷৷2.40.34৷৷


ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪ್ರಯಾಣೇ at the time of departure, ಪುರಮ್ the city, ರುದಿತಾಶ್ರುಪರಿದ್ಯೂನಮ್ drenched with tears from weeping, ಹಾಹಾಕೃತಮ್ 'Alas, Alas', ಅಚೇತನಮ್ insensate, ಪರಮ ಪೀಡಿತಮ್ ಆಸೀತ್ became tormented.

At the time of Rama's departure, the insensate city was drenched with tears of the deeply afflicted people crying, 'Alas, Alas'.

Tears born of anguish fell from the eyes of women just as water-drops fall from lotuses shaken by the movements of fishes.
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತು ನೃಪತಿ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನೇಕಚಿತ್ತಗತಂ ಪುರಮ್.

ನಿಪಪಾತೈವ ದುಃಖೇನ ಹತಮೂಲ ಇವ ದ್ರುಮಃ৷৷2.40.36৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ನೃಪತಿಃ king, ಏಕಚಿತ್ತಗತಮ್ absorbed in the same thought, ಪುರಮ್ the city, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ದುಃಖೇನ with grief, ಹತಮೂಲಃ with roots severed, ದ್ರುಮಃ ಇವ like tree, ನಿಪಪಾತೈವ fell down.

Having seen the city (people) absorbed in one single thought, the prosperous king, grief-stricken, fell down on the ground like a tree severed at its root.
ತತೋ ಹಲಹಲಾಶಬ್ದೋ ಜಜ್ಞೇ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪೃಷ್ಠತಃ.

ನರಾಣಾಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಸೀದನ್ತಂ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಮ್৷৷2.40.37৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಭೃಶ ದುಃಖಿತಮ್ intensely grieved, ಸೀದನ್ತಮ್ enfeebled, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ನರಾಣಾಮ್ men's, ಹಲಹಲಾಶಬ್ದಃ a tumultous roar, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪೃಷ್ಠತಃ behind, ಜಜ್ಞೇ emanated.

When the people saw the king enfeebled by deep grief, they raised an uproar behind Rama's (chariot).
ಹಾ ರಾಮೇತಿ ಜನಾಃ ಕೇಚಿದ್ರಾಮಮಾತೇತಿ ಚಾಪರೇ.

ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಂ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಂ ಚ ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತಃ ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯನ್৷৷2.40.38৷৷


ಕೇಚಿತ್ some, ಜನಾಃ people, ಹಾ ರಾಮೇತಿ O Rama, ಅಪರೇ some others, ರಾಮಮಾತೇತಿ O mother of Rama, ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತಃ while crying, ಸಮೃದ್ಧಮ್ loudly, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಂ ಚ inner apartment, ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯನ್ made them weep.

Some among them wailed 'Oh Rama!', while some others cried 'Oh mother of Rama!' By crying loudly, they made the women in the inner apartment cry too.
ಅನ್ವೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣೋ ರಾಮಸ್ತು ವಿಷಣ್ಣಂ ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಚೇತಸಮ್.

ರಾಜಾನಂ ಮಾತರಂ ಚೈವ ದದರ್ಶಾನುಗತೌ ಪಥಿ৷৷2.40.39৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ತು Rama, ಅನ್ವೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ glanced back, ವಿಷಣ್ಣಮ್ dejected, ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಚೇತಸಮ್ with a disturbed mind, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಮಾತರಂ ಚೈವ mother also, ಪಥಿ on the highway, ಅನುಗತೌ following, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

When Rama glanced back, he saw his mother and father trailing behind him on the highway, with an agitated and dejected mind.
ಸ ಬದ್ಧ ಇವ ಪಾಶೇನ ಕಿಶೋರೋ ಮಾತರಂ ಯಥಾ.

ಧರ್ಮಪಾಶೇನ ಸಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಂ ನಾಭ್ಯುದೈಕ್ಷತ৷৷2.40.40৷৷


ಪಾಶೇನ ಬದ್ಧಃ fastened by cord, ಕಿಶೋರಃ ಇವ like a foal, ಸಃ Rama, ಧರ್ಮಪಾಶೇನ by bonds of duty, ಸಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಃ restrained, ಮಾತರಂ ಯಥಾ like mother, ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮ್ clearly, ನಾಭ್ಯುದೈಕ್ಷತ did not see.

Like a fastened foal cannot see its mother, Rama restrained by bonds of duty could not see his parents clearly.
ಪದಾತಿನೌ ಚ ಯಾನಾರ್ಹಾವದುಃಖಾರ್ಹೌ ಸುಖೋಚಿತೌ.

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸಞ್ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಯಾಹೀತಿ ಸಾರಥಿಮ್৷৷2.40.41৷৷


ಯಾನಾರ್ಹೌ worthy of going on chariot, ಪದಾತಿನೌ (now) going on foot, ಸುಖೋಚಿತೌ accustomed to comforts, ಅದು:ಖಾರ್ಹೌ unworthy of experiencing sorrow, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ swiftly, ಯಾಹಿ ಇತಿ 'go' thus, ಸಾರಥಿಮ್ of charioteer, ಸಞ್ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ urged.

Seeing his parents, who were worthy of riding a chariot now going on foot, who were accustomed to comforts and did not deserve any suffering, Rama urged his charioteer to drive fast.
ನ ಹಿ ತತ್ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೋ ದುಃಖದಂ ದರ್ಶನಂ ಪಿತುಃ.

ಮಾತುಶ್ಚ ಸಹಿತುಂ ಶಕ್ತಸ್ತೋತ್ರಾರ್ದಿತ ಇವ ದ್ವಿಪಃ৷৷2.40.42৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ tiger (best) among men, ತೋತ್ರಾರ್ದಿತಃ tormented by the goads, ದ್ವಿಪಃ ಇವ like an elephant, ದುಃಖದಮ್ causing agony, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಮಾತುಶ್ಚ mother's, ತತ್ ದರ್ಶನಮ್ that sight, ಸಹಿತುಮ್ to endure, ನ ಶಕ್ತಃ ಹಿ was not able.

Rama the best among men, could not, like an elephant tormented by the goad, endure that pitiful sight of his father and mother.
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಗಾರಮಿವಾಯಾನ್ತೀ ವತ್ಸಲಾ ವತ್ಸಕಾರಣಾತ್.

ಬದ್ಧವತ್ಸಾ ಯಥಾ ಧೇನೂ ರಾಮಮಾತಾಭ್ಯಧಾವತ৷৷2.40.43৷৷


ಬದ್ಧವತ್ಸಾ fastened calf, ವತ್ಸಲಾ affectionate, ಅಗಾರಂ ಪ್ರತಿ towards the shed, ಆಯನ್ತೀ coming,
ಧೇನುಃ ಇವ like cow, ವತ್ಸಕಾರಣಾತ್ ಯಥಾ for its calf, ರಾಮಮಾತಾ Rama's mother, ಅಭ್ಯಧಾವತ ran behind.

Rama's mother ran after the chariot, like an affectionate cow running towards the shed to join its fastened calf.
ತಥಾ ರುದನ್ತೀಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ರಥಂ ತಮನುಧಾವತೀಮ್.

ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀಂ ರಾಮ ರಾಮೇತಿ ಹಾ ಸೀತೇ! ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇತಿ ಚ৷৷2.40.44৷৷

ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸೀತಾರ್ಥಂ ಸ್ರವನ್ತೀಂ ವಾರಿ ನೇತ್ರಜಮ್.

ಅಸಕೃತ್ಪ್ರೈಕ್ಷತ ತದಾ ನೃತ್ಯನ್ತೀಮಿವ ಮಾತರಮ್৷৷2.40.45৷৷


(ಸಃ Rama), ತಥಾ thus, ರುದನ್ತೀಮ್ weeping, ರಾಮ ರಾಮೇತಿ O Rama, O Rama, ಹಾ ಸೀತೇ O Sita, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇತಿ ಚ O Lakshmana, ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀಮ್ crying, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸೀತಾರ್ಥಮ್ for Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, ನೇತ್ರಜಮ್ born of eyes, ವಾರಿ tears, ಸ್ರವನ್ತೀಮ್ shedding, ನೃತ್ಯನ್ತೀಮ್ ಇವ like a dancer, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ತಾಂ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ that Kausalya, ಅಸಕೃತ್ repeatedly, ಪ್ರೈಕ್ಷತ saw.

While Kausalya was weeping and running after the chariot, crying O 'Rama, O Sita, O Lakshmana, shedding tears for them, Rama repeatedly glanced at her who was
twisting and bending as if in a dancing pose.
ತಿಷ್ಠೇತಿ ರಾಜಾ ಚುಕ್ರೋಶ ಯಾಹಿ ಯಾಹೀತಿ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಬಭೂವಾತ್ಮಾ ಚಕ್ರಯೋರಿವ ಚಾನ್ತರಾ৷৷2.40.46৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ತಿಷ್ಠೇತಿ 'stay, stay', ಚುಕ್ರೋಶ cried, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಯಾಹಿ ಇತಿ 'go, go', ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಸ್ಯ Sumantra's, ಆತ್ಮಾ mind, ಚಕ್ರಯೋ: two wheels, ಅನ್ತರಾ ಇವ like in between, ಬಭೂವ became.

The king cried, 'Stay, Stay', while Rama said 'Go on, Go on'. Sumantra's mind was caught as if in between two wheels.

ಚಿರಂ ದುಃಖಸ್ಯ ಪಾಪಿಷ್ಠಮಿತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ತಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.40.47৷৷

When the king reproaches you for not stopping the chariot, you can say 'I could not hear'.Prolonging agony is sinful, said Rama to Sumantra.

ವ್ರಜತೋಪಿ ಹಯಾನ್ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ ಸಾರಥಿಃ৷৷2.40.48৷৷


ಸ ಸಾರಥಿಃ charioteer, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವಚಃ words, ಕುರ್ವನ್ obeying, ತಮ್ ಜನಮ್ that multitude of people, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ having given permision (taking leave), ವ್ರಜತೋಪಿ even though moving, ಹಯಾನ್ horses, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ with greater speed, ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ hastened.

Obeying the command of Rama and after taking leave of the people, Sumantra hastened the horses although they were galloping.
ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ ಜನೋ ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ರಾಮಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್.

ಮನಸಾಪ್ಯಶ್ರುವೇಗೈಶ್ಚ ನ ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ ಮಾನುಷಮ್৷৷2.40.49৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king's, ಜನಃ people, ರಾಮಮ್ of Rama, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ circumanbulating him in imaginataion, ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ returned, ಮಾನುಷಮ್ people, ಮನಸಾ ಅಪಿ even mentally, ಅಶ್ರುವೇಗೈಶ್ಚ flow of their tears, ನ ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ did not stop.

The king's men returned, with Rama circumambulated (on the plane of their minds). But from their minds they could not hold back their tears (grief).

We should not follow over a long distance those we wish to return, said the ministers to king Dasaratha.

ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಸ್ತಂ ಸುತಮೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ৷৷2.40.51৷৷


ಪ್ರಸ್ವಿನ್ನಗಾತ್ರಃ with a perspiring body, ಪ್ರವಿಷಣ್ಣರೂಪಃ with a melancholic appearance, ಕೃಪಣಃ overcome with grief, ಸಭಾರ್ಯಃ along with his wives, ರಾಜಾ the king, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಸರ್ವಗುಣೋಪಪನ್ನಮ್ endowed with every virtue, ವಚಃ words, ನಿಶಮ್ಯ having heard, ತಂ ಸುತಮ್ that son, ಈಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ while looking at, ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಃ stood there.

Dasaratha and his wives, overcome with grief, heard their words steeped in virtue
(wisdom). The king stood there with his perspiring body and melancholic appearance, fixing his gaze on his son.
