[On the departure of Rama to the forest, citizens of Ayodhya and women from the inner apartment lament]

ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸ್ತು ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೇ ವಿನಿರ್ಯಾತಿ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲೌ.

ಆರ್ತಶಬ್ದೋಹಿ ಸಞ್ಜಜ್ಞೇ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮನ್ತ:ಪುರೇ ಮಹಾನ್৷৷2.41.1৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೇ tiger (foremost) among men, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that Rama, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲೌ with folded palms, ವಿನಿರ್ಯಾತಿ having departed, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರೇ in the inner apartment (of the palace), ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ of women, ಆರ್ತಶಬ್ದಃ cries of distress, ಸಂಜಜ್ಞೇ arose.

When Rama, the foremost men, was departing with folded palms there arose a huge cry of distress from the inner apartment of ladies.
ಅನಾಥಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ದುರ್ಬಲಸ್ಯ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಃ.

ಯೋ ಗತಿಶ್ಶರಣಂ ಚಾಸೀತ್ಸ ನಾಥಃ ಕ್ವ ನು ಗಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.41.2৷৷


ಅನಾಥಸ್ಯ of the orphan, ದುರ್ಬಲಸ್ಯ of the weak, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಃ of the miserable, ಅಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ of these people, ಯಃ who, ಗತಿಃ refuge, ಶರಣಂ ಚ also the protector, ಆಸೀತ್ was, ಸಃ ನಾಥಃ such protector, ಕ್ವ ನು ಗಚ್ಛತಿ where is he now going?

Rama was a refuge and a protector to all the people who were defenceless, weak and miserable. Where is such a protector going now? (said the people).
ನ ಕ್ರುಧ್ಯತ್ಯಭಿಶಪ್ತೋಪಿ ಕ್ರೋಧನೀಯಾನಿ ವರ್ಜಯನ್.

ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಾನ್ಪ್ರಸಾದಯನ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಸಮದುಃಖಃ ಕ್ವ ಗಜ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.41.3৷৷


ಅಭಿಶಪ್ತೋಪಿ even when denounced, ನ ಕ್ರುಧ್ಯತಿ will not be angry, ಕ್ರೋಧನೀಯಾನಿ acts provoking wrath, ವರ್ಜಯನ್ while abandoning, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಾನ್ those who were enraged, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all of them, ಪ್ರಸಾದಯನ್ pacifies, ಸಮದುಃಖಃ sharing their sorrow, ಕ್ವ where, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ is going?

Where is he who, even if reviled, never gets angry, never does acts that provoke anger, pacifies those who are enraged and shares the sorrows of others going now?
ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಯಥಾ ಮಾತರಿ ವರ್ತತೇ.

ತಥಾ ಯೋ ವರ್ತತೇಸ್ಮಾಸು ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಕ್ವ ನು ಗಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.41.4৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ effulgent, ಯಃ Rama, ಮಾತರಿ with regard to his mother, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ Kausalya, ಯಥಾ as, ವರ್ತತೇ treats, ತಥಾ in that way, ಅಸ್ಮಾಸು in us, ವರ್ತತೇ treats, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ a magnanimous one, ಕ್ವ ನು where, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ is he going?

Where is he, that effulgent, magnanimous one who treated us (with the same respect) as he treated his mother Kausalya, going now?
ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯಮಾನೇನ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ಸಞ್ಚೋದಿತೋ ವನಮ್.

ಪರಿತ್ರಾತಾ ಜನಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಜಗತಃ ಕ್ವ ನು ಗಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.41.5৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯಮಾನೇನ by being tormented, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಸಞ್ಚೋದಿತಃ one ordered, ಅಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ of these people, ಜಗತಃ of the whole world, ಪರಿತ್ರಾತಾ protector, Rama, ಕ್ವ ನು where, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ is he going?

Tormented by Kaikeyi, the king ordered him to go to the forest. Where is he, who happened to be the protector of the people of this world, going now?
ಅಹೋ! ನಿಶ್ಚೇತನೋ ರಾಜಾ ಜೀವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.

ಧರ್ಮ್ಯಂ ಸತ್ಯವ್ರತಂ ರಾಮಂ ವನವಾಸೇ ಪ್ರವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.41.6৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ನಿಶ್ಚೇತನಃ non-sense, ಅಹೋ alas, ಜೀವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ of the world of living beings, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ is dear, ಧರ್ಮ್ಯಮ್ is righteous, ಸತ್ಯವ್ರತಮ್ faithful to truth, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ವನವಾಸೇ to dwell in the forest, ಪ್ರವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ is sending away.

Alas, the king must be devoid of any sense as he is sending away Rama, who is dear to the world, is righteous and truthful, to dwell in the forest.
ಇತಿ ಸರ್ವಾ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಸ್ತಾ ವಿವತ್ಸಾ ಇವ ಧೇನವಃ.

ರುರುದುಶ್ಚೈವ ದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾಃ ಸಸ್ವರಂ ಚ ವಿಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ৷৷2.41.7৷৷


ಇತಿ thus, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ತಾಃ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಃ all the wives, ವಿವತ್ಸಾಃ deprived of their calfs, ಧೇನವಃ ಇವ like cows, ದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾಃ tormented with sorrow, ರುರುದುಶ್ಚೈವ wept, ಸಸ್ವರಮ್ loudly, ವಿಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ cried.

So wept aloud the anguished wives of the king like cows separated from their calves.
ಸ ತಮನ್ತಃ ಪುರೇ ಘೋರಮಾರ್ತಶಬ್ದಂ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ.

ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾಭಿಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಚಾಸೀತ್ಸುದುಃಖಿತಃ৷৷2.41.8৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾಭಿಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ oppressed with sorrow caused by the departure of his son, ಸಃ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ that king, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರೇ in the inner apartment (of the palace), ಘೋರಮ್ horible, ತಮ್ that, ಆರ್ತ ಶಬ್ದಮ್ wailings, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಸುದುಃಖಿತಃ ಆಸೀತ್ became increasingly distressed.

Upon hearing the dreadful wailing from the inner apartments of the palace, the king already devasted at the separation from his son, grew even more distressed.
ನಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಾಣ್ಯಹೂಯನ್ತ ನಾಪಚನ್ ಗೃಹಮೇಧಿನಃ

ಅಕುರ್ವನ್ನ ಪ್ರಜಾಃ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಸೂರ್ಯಶ್ಚಾನ್ತರಧೀಯತ৷৷2.41.9৷৷


ಅಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಾಣಿ (Fire) in agnihotra sacrifice, ನಾಹೂಯನ್ತ was not invoked, ಗೃಹಮೇಧಿನಃ householders, ನಾಪಚನ್ did not cook, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ people, ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ daily chores, ನ ಅಕುರ್ವನ್ did not do, ಸೂರ್ಯಶ್ಚ even the Sun, ಅನ್ತರಧೀಯತ also obscured.

The sacred fire in agnihotra sacrifices was not invoked; householders did not cook their food; the people did not attend to their daily chores. And the Sun set.
ವ್ಯಸೃಜನ್ ಕಬಲಾನ್ನಾಗಾ ಗಾವೋ ವತ್ಸಾನ್ನ ಪಾಯಯನ್.

ಪುತ್ರಂ ಪ್ರಥಮಜಂ ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾ ಜನನೀ ನಾಭ್ಯನನ್ದತ৷৷2.41.10৷৷


ನಾಗಾಃ elephants, ಕಬಲಾನ್ mouthful of food, ವ್ಯಸೃಜನ್ shed, ಗಾವಃ cows, ವತ್ಸಾನ್ calves, ನ ಪಾಯಯನ್ did not suckle, ಜನನೀ mothers, ಪ್ರಥಮಜಮ್ to the first-born, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ಲಬ್ಧವಾ having begotten, ನಾಭ್ಯನನ್ದತ were not pleased.

Elephants dropped their morsel of food. Cows did not suckle their calves. Even the mothers were not pleased with their first-born sons.
ತ್ರಿಶಙ್ಕುರ್ಲೋಹಿತಾಙ್ಗಶ್ಚ ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತಿಬುಧಾವಪಿ.

ದಾರುಣಾ ಸ್ಸೋಮಮಭ್ಯೇತ್ಯ ಗ್ರಹಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ৷৷2.41.11৷৷


ತ್ರಿಶಙ್ಕು: Trishanku, ಲೋಹಿತಾಙ್ಗಶ್ಚ Mars, ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತಿಬುಧಾವಪಿ Jupiter as also Mercury, ದಾರುಣಾಃ fierce aspect, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಗ್ರಹಾಃ planets, ಸೋಮಮ್ Moon, ಅಭ್ಯೇತ್ಯ approaching, ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ remained.

The constellation Trishanku, the planets Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and other fierce planets took their position near the Moon.
ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಾಣಿ ಗತಾರ್ಚೀಂಷಿ ಗ್ರಹಾಶ್ಚ ಗತತೇಜಸಃ.

ವಿಶಾಖಾಸ್ತು ಸಧೂಮಾಶ್ಚ ನಭಸಿ ಪ್ರಚಕಾಶಿರೇ৷৷2.41.12৷৷


ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಾಣಿ the constellation of stars, ಗತಾರ್ಚೀಂಷಿ shorn of their radiance, ಗ್ರಹಾಶ್ಚ planets also, ಗತತೇಜಸಃ diminished their brilliance, ವಿಶಾಖಾಸ್ತು as for Visakha stars, ಸಧೂಮಾಃ with smoke, ನಭಸಿ in the sky, ಪ್ರಚಕಾಶಿರೇ were shining.

The stars were shorn of their radiance. The brilliance of the planets diminished. Shrouded in smoke the Visakha constellation appeared in the sky.
ಕಾಲಿಕಾನಿಲವೇಗೇನ ಮಹೋದಧಿರಿವೋತ್ಥಿತಃ.

ರಾಮೇ ವನಂ ಪ್ರವ್ರಜಿತೇ ನಗರಂ ಪ್ರಚಚಾಲ ತತ್৷৷2.41.13৷৷


ಮಹೋದಧಿಃ great ocean, ಕಾಲಿಕಾನಿಲವೇಗೇನ ಇವ like wind-blown dark clouds, ಉತ್ಥಿತಃ aroused, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಪ್ರವ್ರಜಿತೇ having been exiled, ತತ್ ನಗರಮ್ that city (of Ayodhya), ಪ್ರಚಚಾಲ was shaken.

After Rama left for the forest, dark clouds appeared (in the sky) like the (waves of) the great ocean uplifted by the speed of the wind which shook the city.
ದಿಶಃ ಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಾಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ಸ್ತಿಮಿರೇಣೇವ ಸಂವೃತಾಃ.

ನ ಗ್ರಹೋ ನಾಪಿ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಂ ಪ್ರಚಕಾಶೇ ನಕಿಞ್ಚನ৷৷2.41.14৷৷


ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ದಿಶಃ cardinal points, ಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಾಃ agitated, ತಿಮಿರೇಣ with darkness, ಸಂವೃತಾಃ ಇವ covered, ಗ್ರಹಃ planet, ನ ಪ್ರಚಕಾಶೇ did not shine, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಮಪಿ even stars, ಕಿಞ್ಚನ anything, ನ not shining.

As if covered with darkness, all the cardinal points became agitated. No planet, no star nor was anything (any heavenly body) shining (in the sky).
ಅಕಸ್ಮಾನ್ನಾಗರಸ್ಸರ್ವೋ ಜನೋ ದೈನ್ಯಮುಪಾಗಮತ್.

ಆಹಾರೇ ವಾ ವಿಹಾರೇ ವಾ ನ ಕಶ್ಚಿದಕರೋನ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.41.15৷৷


ಸರ್ವಃ all, ನಾಗರಃ relating to the city, ಜನಃ people, ಅಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ suddenly, ದೈನ್ಯಮ್ helplessness, ಉಪಾಗಮತ್ obtained, ಆಹಾರೇ ವಾ either in nourishment, ವಿಹಾರೇ ವಾ or in recreation, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ none, ಮನಃ their mind, ನ ಅಕರಾತ್ not done.

All of a sudden the people of the city became miserable. No one was interested in eating and enjoying (life).
ಶೋಕಪರ್ಯಾಯಸನ್ತಪ್ತ ಸ್ಸತತಂ ದೀರ್ಘಮುಚ್ಛವಸನ್.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಜನಸ್ಸರ್ವ ಶ್ಶುಶೋಚ ಜಗತೀಪತಿಮ್৷৷2.41.16৷৷


ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ಸರ್ವಃ all, ಜನಃ people, ಶೋಕಪರ್ಯಾಯಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ afflicted with a series of grief, ಸತತಮ್ always, ದೀರ್ಘಮ್ deeply, ಉಚ್ಛವಸನ್ heaving, ಜಗತೀಪತಿಮ್ the lord of the world, ಶುಶೋಚ
bewailed.

All the citizens of Ayodhya, afflicted with a series of grief and heaving deep sighs ceaselessly bewailed at the sight of the lord of the world (Dasaratha).
ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಮುಖೋ ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಗತೋ ಜನಃ.

ನ ಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ಸರ್ವ ಶ್ಶೋಕಪರಾಯಣಃ৷৷2.41.17৷৷


ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಗತಃ in the royal highway, ಜನಃ people, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಮುಖಃ faces full of tears, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ any body, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ happy, ನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯಯತೇ could not be seen, ಸರ್ವಃ all, ಶೋಕಪರಾಯಣಃ was plunged in sorrow.

The faces of the people on the highway were turbid with tears. None looked happy. All were plunged in sorrow.
ನ ವಾತಿ ಪವನ ಶ್ಶೀತೋ ನ ಶಶೀ ಸೌಮ್ಯದರ್ಶನಃ.

ನ ಸೂರ್ಯಸ್ತಪತೇ ಲೋಕಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಂ ಜಗತ್৷৷2.41.18৷৷


ಪವನಃ wind, ಶೀತಃ cool, ನ ವಾತಿ does not blow, ಶಶೀ Moon, ಸೌಮ್ಯದರ್ಶನಃ with pleasant appearance, ನ not, ಸೂರ್ಯಃ Sun, ಲೋಕಮ್ the world, ನ ತಪತೇ did not warm, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ಜಗತ್ world, ಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಮ್ was agitated.

The breeze did not blow cool. No more did the Moon look pleasant. The Sun did not give warmth to the world. All the world was agitated.
ಅನರ್ಥಿನಸ್ಸುತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಭರ್ತಾರೋ ಭ್ರಾತರಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಸರ್ವೇ ಸರ್ವಂ ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ ರಾಮಮೇವಾನ್ವಚಿನ್ತಯನ್৷৷2.41.19৷৷


ಸುತಾಃ sons, ಭರ್ತಾರಃ husbands, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ towards women, ಅನರ್ಥಿನಃ had no concern, ತಥಾ similarly, ಭ್ರಾತರಃ brothers, ಅನರ್ಥಿನಃ had no mutual interest, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything, ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ having deserted, ರಾಮಮೇವ about Rama only, ಅನ್ವಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ they thought.

Mothers stopped thinking of their sons and husbands of their wives. Brothers were no longer interested in each other. Every one deserted every one and thought only of Rama.
ಯೇ ತು ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಸುಹೃದ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ತೇ ಮೂಢಚೇತಸಃ.

ಶೋಕಭಾರೇಣ ಚಾಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾ ಶ್ಶಯನಂ ನ ಜಹುಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.41.20৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಯೇ ಸುಹೃದಃ those friends, ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ all of them, ಮೂಢಚೇತಸಃ bewildered, ಶೋಕಭಾರೇಣ with burden of sorrow, ಆಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾಃ afflicted, ಶಯನಮ್ couches, ನ ಜಹುಃ did not leave.

All the friends of Rama were stupefied. Afflicted with the burden of sorrow they did not leave their bed.
ತತಸ್ತ್ವಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ರಹಿತಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ

ಪುರನ್ದರೇಣೇವ ಮಹೀ ಸಪರ್ವತಾ.

ಚಚಾಲ ಘೋರಂ ಭಯಶೋಕಪೀಡಿತಾ

ಸನಾಗಯೋಧಾಶ್ವಗಣಾ ನನಾದ ಚ৷৷2.41.21৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಪುರನ್ದರೇಣ by Indra, ರಹಿತಾ without, ಸಪರ್ವತಾ with mountains, ಮಹೀವ like earth, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ magnanimous Rama, ರಹಿತಾ without, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ Ayodhya, ಭಯಶೋಕಪೀಡಿತಾ agitated by fear and sorrow, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadfully, ಚಚಾಲ had shaken, ಸನಾಗಯೋಧಾಶ್ವಗಣಾ filled with hosts of warriors, elephants and horses, ನನಾದ ಚ made sounds.

Without magnanimous Rama, Ayodhya thereafter looked like the earth along with its mountains bereft of Indra. Afflicted with fear and sorrow it started shaking dreadfully with the sounds of horses, elephants and warriors.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
