[Rama reaches the banks of Tamasa river.]

ಅನುರಕ್ತಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್.

ಅನುಜಗ್ಮುಃ ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತಂ ತಂ ವನವಾಸಾಯ ಮಾನವಾಃ৷৷2.45.1৷৷


ಅನುರಕ್ತಾಃ devoted, ಮಾನವಾಃ men, ವನವಾಸಾಯ to dwell in the forest, ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತಮ್ setting out, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ great, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ to one whose truth is his power, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ಅನುಜಗ್ಮುಃ followed him.

When the high-souled Rama whose strength was his sense of truth set out for the forest, the faithful people followed him.
ನಿವರ್ತಿತೇಪಿ ಚ ಬಲಾತ್ಸುಹೃದ್ವರ್ಗೇ ಚ ರಾಜನಿ.

ನೈವ ತೇ ಸಂನ್ಯವರ್ತನ್ತ ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾನುಗತಾ ರಥಮ್৷৷2.45.2৷৷


ಸುಹೃದ್ವರ್ಗೇ when hosts of friends, ರಾಜನಿ ಚ and when the king, ಬಲಾತ್ forcibly, ನಿವರ್ತಿತೇಪಿ ಚ
though sent back, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಅನುಗತಾಃ followers, ತೇ those people, ನೈವ ಸಂನ್ಯವರ್ತನ್ತ did not return.

The king and the hosts of friends were forcibly sent back but they did not return. They continued to follow the chariot of Rama.
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾನಿಲಯಾನಾಂ ಹಿ ಪುರುಷಾಣಾಂ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಬಭೂವ ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರ ಇವ ಪ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.45.3৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ illustrious, ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ endowed with virtue of every kind, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾನಿಲಯಾನಾಮ್ dwelling in Ayodhya, ಪುರುಷಾಣಾಮ್ for men, ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರ ಇವ like the full Moon, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ ಬಭೂವ ಹಿ became dear.

The illustrious and virtuous Rama was as dear to the inhabitants of Ayodhya as the
full Moon.
ಸ ಯಾಚ್ಯಮಾನಃ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ ಸ್ವಾಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಭಿಸ್ತದಾ.

ಕುರ್ವಾಣಃ ಪಿತರಂ ಸತ್ಯಂ ವನಮೇವಾನ್ವಪದ್ಯತ৷৷2.45.4৷৷


ಸಃ that, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ: descendant of the Kakutsthas (Rama), ತದಾ then, ಸ್ವಾಭಿಃ his own, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಭಿಃ by the subjects, ಯಾಚ್ಯಮಾನಃ although pleaded, ಪಿತರಮ್ father's, ಸತ್ಯಮ್ as truthful, ಕುರ್ವಾಣಃ doing, ವನಮೇವ to the forest, ಅನ್ವಪದ್ಯತ proceeded.

Although entreated by his subjects (not to go) Rama proceeded to the forest to make his father's vow come true.
ಅವೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ ಸಸ್ನೇಹಂ ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ ಪ್ರಪಿಬನ್ನಿವ.

ಉವಾಚ ರಾಮಃ ಸ್ನೇಹೇನ ತಾಃ ಪ್ರಜಾಃ ಸ್ವಾಃ ಪ್ರಜಾ ಇವ৷৷2.45.5৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ with eyes, ಪ್ರಪಿಬನ್ನಿವ as if drinking, ತಾಃ those, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ people, ಸ್ವಾಃ his own, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ ಇವ like children, ಸಸ್ನೇಹಮ್ (ಸ್ನೇಹೇನ) with affection, ಅವೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ seeing, ಉವಾಚ said.

Looking at the people with love as if they were his own children and as though
drinking them with his glances, Rama appealed to them:
ಯಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿರ್ಬಹುಮಾನಶ್ಚ ಮಯ್ಯಯೋಧ್ಯಾನಿವಾಸಿನಾಮ್.

ಮತ್ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಥಂ ವಿಶೇಷೇಣ ಭರತೇ ಸಾ ನಿವೇಶ್ಯತಾಮ್৷৷2.45.6৷৷


ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾನಿವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ of residents of Ayodhya, ಮಯಿ in me, ಯಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿಃ which love, ಬಹುಮಾನಶ್ಚ also respect, ಸಾ that one, ವಿಶೇಷೇಣ specially, ಮತ್ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಥಂ for endearing me, ಭರತೇ in Bharata, ನಿವೇಶ್ಯತಾಮ್ be placed on Bharata.

O citizens of Ayodhya may the love and respect you have shown to please me be bestowed specially on Bharata!
ಸ ಹಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಚಾರಿತ್ರಃ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನಃ.

ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಯಥಾವದ್ವಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ ಚ ಹಿತಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.45.7৷৷


ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಚಾರಿತ್ರಃ one having auspicious character, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನಃ enhancer of Kaikeyi's delight, ಸಃ that Bharata, ಯಥಾವತ್ appropriate, ವಃ to you, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ agreeable, ಹಿತಾನಿ ಚ beneficial acts also, ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಹಿ will do.

Bharata, enhancer of the delight of Kaikeyi, possesses an auspicious character. He will do for you everything appropriate, agreeable and beneficial.
ಜ್ಞಾನವೃದ್ಧೋ ವಯೋಬಾಲೋ ಮೃದುರ್ವೀರ್ಯಗುಣಾನ್ವಿತಃ.

ಅನುರೂಪಃ ಸ ವೋ ಭರ್ತಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಭಯಾಪಹಃ৷৷2.45.8৷৷


ಜ್ಞಾನವೃದ್ಧಃ old in wisdom, ವಯೋಬಾಲಃ young in age, ಮೃದುಃ gentle, ವೀರ್ಯಗುಣಾನ್ವಿತಃ endowed with valour and virtues, ಸಃ he, ವಃ to you, ಅನುರೂಪಃ worthy one, ಭಯಾಪಹಃ eliminating fears, ಭರ್ತಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will be protector.

Though tender in age Bharata is mature in intellect. Gentle, valiant and virtuous, he will dispel all your fears and act as a true protector.
ಸ ಹಿ ರಾಜಗುಣೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತೋ ಯುವರಾಜಃ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಿತಃ.

ಅಪಿ ಚಾಪಿ ಮಯಾ ಶಿಷ್ಟೈಃ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ವೋ ಭರ್ತೃಶಾಸನಮ್৷৷2.45.9৷৷


ರಾಜಗುಣೈಃ royal qualities, ಯುಕ್ತಃ endowed with, ಸಃ that, ಯುವರಾಜಃ as heir-apparent, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಿತಃ is recognised, ಅಪಿ ಚ also, ಮಯಾ by me, ಶಿಷ್ಟೈಃ by others, ವಃ to you, ಭರ್ತೃಶಾಸನಮ್ king's order, ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ should be obeyed.

Endowed with kingly qualities, he is recognised as heir-apparent. Therefore, as I did, all of you should obey the order of the king.
ನ ಚ ಸನ್ತಪ್ಯೇದ್ಯಥಾ ಚಾಸೌ ವನವಾಸಂ ಗತೇ ಮಯಿ.

ಮಹಾರಾಜಸ್ತಥಾ ಕಾರ್ಯೋ ಮಮ ಪ್ರಿಯಚಿಕೀರ್ಷಯಾ৷৷2.45.10৷৷


ಮಯಿ when I, ವನವಾಸಮ್ to the forest, ಗತೇ had left, ಅಸೌ ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ this king, ಯಥಾ as, ನ ಚ ಸನ್ತಪ್ಯೇತ್ does not grieve, ತಥಾ in that way, ಮಮ to me, ಪ್ರಿಯ ಚಿಕೀರ್ಷಯಾ with a desire to please, ಕಾರ್ಯಃ fit to be done.

If you desire to please me, act in such a way that the king does not grieve after I have gone to the forest.
ಯಥಾ ಯಥಾ ದಾಶರಥಿ ರ್ಧರ್ಮ ಏವಾಸ್ಥಿತೋಭವತ್.

ತಥಾ ತಥಾ ಪ್ರಕೃತಯೋ ರಾಮಂ ಪತಿಮಕಾಮಯನ್৷৷2.45.11৷৷


ದಾಶರಥಿಃ Dasaratha's son, Rama, ಯಥಾ ಯಥಾ such as, ಧರ್ಮೇ ಏವ in righteousness only, ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಅಭವತ್ became committed, ತಥಾ ತಥಾ in the same way, ಪ್ರಕೃತಯಃ subjects, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪತಿಮ್ as king, ಅಕಾಮಯನ್ desired.

The more the son of Dasaratha (Rama) committed to righteousness, the more the subjects desired that he should be their king.
ಬಾಷ್ಪೇಣ ಪಿಹಿತಂ ದೀನಂ ರಾಮಃ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಣಾ ಸಹ.

ಚಕರ್ಷೇವ ಗುಣೈರ್ಬದ್ಧ್ವಾ ಜನಂ ಪುರನಿವಾಸಿನಮ್৷৷2.45.12৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಣಾ ಸಹ accompanied by the son of Sumitra (Lakshmana), ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಬಾಷ್ಪೇಣ with tears, ಪಿಹಿತಮ್ concealed, ದೀನಮ್ piteous, ಪುರನಿವಾಸಿನಮ್ city-dwellers, ಜನಮ್ people, ಗುಣೈಃ with his virtues, ಬದ್ಧ್ವಾ ಇವ as if bound by, ಚಕರ್ಷ attracted.

Rama along with Lakshmana attracted the city-dwellers who, choked with tears, were looking miserable. It appeared they were bound with his virtues.
ತೇ ದ್ವಿಜಾಸ್ತ್ರಿವಿಧಂ ವೃದ್ಧಾ ಜ್ಞಾನೇನ ವಯಸೌಜಸಾ.

ವಯಃ ಪ್ರಕಮ್ಪಶಿರಸೋ ದೂರಾದೂಚುರಿದಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.45.13৷৷


ಜ್ಞಾನೇನ in wisdom, ವಯಸಾ in age, ಓಜಸಾ in spiritual energy, ತ್ರಿವಿಧಮ್ in all the three ways, ವೃದ್ಧಾಃ aged, ತೇ ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ those brahmins, ವಯಃ ಪ್ರಕಮ್ಪಶಿರಸಃ shaking due to old age, ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚಃ words, ಊಚುಃ spoke.

Those brahmins who were senior (to him) on three counts like age, wisdom and spirtuality spoke to him from a distance with their heads shaking with age:
ವಹನ್ತೋ ಜವನಾ ರಾಮಂ ಭೋ ಭೋ ಜಾತ್ಯಾಸ್ತುರಙ್ಗಮಾಃ.

ನಿವರ್ತಧ್ವಂ ನ ಗನ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಹಿತಾ ಭವತ ಭರ್ತರಿ৷৷2.45.14৷৷


ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ವಹನ್ತಃ conveying, ಜವನಾಃ swift, ಜಾತ್ಯಾಃ of noble breed, ಭೋ ಭೋ ತುರಙ್ಗಮಾಃ O horses, ನಿವರ್ತಧ್ವಮ್ turn back, ನ ಗನ್ತವ್ಯಮ್ do not proceed, ಭರ್ತರಿ in your master (Rama), ಹಿತಾಃ ಭವತ be good.

O horses of noble breed, turn back! Do not carry your master swiftyly any farther. Do good to him.
ಕರ್ಣವನ್ತಿ ಹಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ ವಿಶೇಷೇಣ ತುರಙ್ಗಮಾಃ.

ಯೂಯಂ ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ನಿವರ್ತಧ್ವಂ ಯಾಚನಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿವೇದಿತಾಃ৷৷2.45.15৷৷


ಭೂತಾನಿ animals, ಕರ್ಣವನ್ತಿ ಹಿ have keen sense of hearing, ತುರಙ್ಗಮಾಃ horses, ವಿಶೇಷೇಣ especially, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಯಾಚನಾಮ್ entreaty, ಪ್ರತಿವೇದಿತಾಃ having known, ಯೂಯಮ್ you, ನಿವರ್ತಧ್ವಮ್ turn back.

All animals, especially horses have a keen sense of hearing. Therefore, having listened to our entreaty, turn back.
ಧರ್ಮತಃ ಸ ವಿಶುದ್ಧಾತ್ಮಾ ವೀರಃ ಶುಭದೃಢವ್ರತಃ.

ಉಪವಾಹ್ಯಸ್ತು ವೋ ಭರ್ತಾ ನಾಪವಾಹ್ಯಃ ಪುರಾದ್ವನಮ್৷৷2.45.16৷৷


ಧರ್ಮತಃ righteous, ವಿಶುದ್ಧಾತ್ಮಾ a purified soul, ವೀರಃ brave, ಶುಭದೃಢವ್ರತಃ auspicious and firm in resolve, ಸಃ ವಃ ಭರ್ತಾ your master, ಉಪವಾಹ್ಯಃ should be carried back, ಪುರಾತ್ from the city, ವನಮ್
to the forest, ನ ಅಪವಾಹ್ಯಃ should not carry.

Your master has a purity of heart. He is righteous, virtuous, brave and firm in resolve, carry him backward and not forward from the city into the forest.
ಏವಮಾರ್ತಪ್ರಲಾಪಾಂಸ್ತಾನ್ ವೃದ್ಧಾನ್ ಪ್ರಲಪತೋ ದ್ವಿಜಾನ್.

ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಹಸಾ ರಾಮೋ ರಥಾದವತತಾರ ಹ৷৷2.45.17৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this manner, ಆರ್ತಪ್ರಲಾಪಾನ್ pitiful lamentations, ಪ್ರಲಪತಃ muttering, ವೃದ್ಧಾನ್ aged, ತಾನ್ದ್ವಿಜಾನ್ those brahmins, ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸಹಸಾ immediately, ರಥಾತ್ from the chariot, ಅವತತಾರ ಹ alighted.

Having seen the aged brahmins muttering pitiful lamentations in this manner, Rama immediately alighted from the chariot.
ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮೇವ ಜಗಾಮಾಥ ಸಸೀತ ಸ್ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ.

ಸನ್ನಿಕೃಷ್ಟಪದನ್ಯಾಸೋ ರಾಮೋ ವನಪರಾಯಣಃ৷৷2.45.18৷৷


ಅಥ then, ಸ ಸೀತಃ along with Sita, ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ and Lakshmana, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವನಪರಾಯಣಃ
(moving) towards the forest, ಸನ್ನಿಕೃಷ್ಟಪದನ್ಯಾಸಃ with a slow pace, ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ ಏವ on foot alone, ಜಗಾಮ went.

Then Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana began walking on foot with slow steps towards the forest.
ದ್ವಿಜಾತೀಂಸ್ತು ಪದಾತೀಂಸ್ತಾನ್ ರಾಮಶ್ಚಾರಿತ್ರವತ್ಸಲಃ.

ನ ಶಶಾಕ ಘೃಣಾಚಕ್ಷುಃ ಪರಿಮೋಕ್ತುಂ ರಥೇನ ಸಃ৷৷2.45.19৷৷


ಚಾರಿತ್ರವತ್ಸಲಃ fond of probity, ಘೃಣಾಚಕ್ಷುಃ compassionate eyes, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಪದಾತೀನ್ those walking on foot, ತಾನ್ ದ್ವಿಜಾತೀನ್ those brahmins, ರಥೇನ with the chariot, ಪರಿಮೋಕ್ತುಮ್ to leave them, ನ ಶಶಾಕ was not possible.

Rama a man of probity and compassion could not ride off in his chariot while those brahmins were trudging far behind.
ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಮೇವ ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರಾಮಂ ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಚೇತಸಃ.

ಊಚುಃ ಪರಮಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾ ರಾಮಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಿದಂ ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ৷৷2.45.20৷৷


ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ brahmins, ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಮೇವ thus going, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಚೇತಸಃ with agitated mind, ಪರಮಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಃ deeply distressed, ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಊಚುಃ said.

Having seen Rama thus going towards the forest, those brahmins, highly agitated and distressed, said to him:
ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಂ ಸರ್ವಮೇತತ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಮನುಗಚ್ಛತಿ.

ದ್ವಿಜಸ್ಕನ್ಧಾಧಿರೂಢಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಮಗ್ನಯೋಪ್ಯನುಯಾನ್ತ್ಯಮೀ৷৷2.45.21৷৷


ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಏತತ್ these, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಮ್ order of brahmins, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಮ್ seeking good of the brahmins, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛತಿ is following, ಅಮೀ these, ಅಗ್ನಯಃ ಅಪಿ sacred fires also, ದ್ವಿಜಸ್ಕನ್ಧಾಧಿರೂಢಾಃ mounting on the shoulders of brahmins, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಅನುಯಾನ್ತಿ following.

This entire order of brahmins with the sacrificial fires on their hsoulders is following you, their well-wisher.
ವಾಜಪೇಯಸಮುತ್ಥಾನಿ ಛತ್ರಾಣ್ಯೇತಾನಿ ಪಶ್ಯ ನಃ.

ಪೃಷ್ಠತೋನುಪ್ರಯಾತಾನಿ ಮೇಘಾನಿವ ಜಲಾತ್ಯಯೇ৷৷2.45.22৷৷


ವಾಜಪೇಯಸಮುತ್ಥಾನಿ acquired while performing Vajapeya sacrifice, ನಃ ಪೃಷ್ಠತಃ behind us, ಅನುಪ್ರಯಾತಾನಿ are coming, ಏತಾನಿ these, ಛತ್ರಾಣಿ umbrellas, ಜಲಾತ್ಯಯೇ at the end of the rainy season, ಮೇಘಾನಿವ like clouds, ಪಶ್ಯ please see.

See these umbrellas acquired by us while performing Vajapeya sacrifice are following you like the clouds at the end of the rainy season.
ಅನವಾಪ್ತಾತಪತ್ರಸ್ಯ ರಶ್ಮಿಸನ್ತಾಪಿತಸ್ಯ ತೇ.

ಏಭಿಶ್ಛಾಯಾಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಃ ಸ್ವೈಶ್ಛತ್ರೈರ್ವಾಜಪೇಯಿಕೈಃ৷৷2.45.23৷৷


ಅನವಾಪ್ತಾತಪತ್ರಸ್ಯ for one without an umbrella, ರಶ್ಮಿಸನ್ತಾಪಿತಸ್ಯ of a man scorched with the rays of the Sun, ತೇ to you, ವಾಜಪೇಯಿಕೈಃ acquired during Vajapeya sacrifice, ಸ್ವೈಃ by your own, ಛತ್ರೈಃ with umbrellas, ಛಾಯಾಮ್ shade, ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಃ will extend.

You do not have a royal umbrella and you are scorched by the rays of the Sun. We will offer you shade with the umbrellas acquired during Vajapeya sacrifice.
ಯಾ ಹಿ ನಃ ಸತತಂ ಬುದ್ಧಿರ್ವೇದಮನ್ತ್ರಾನುಸಾರಿಣೀ.

ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ ಸಾ ಕೃತಾ ವತ್ಸ! ವನವಾಸಾನುಸಾರಿಣೀ৷৷2.45.24৷৷


ವತ್ಸ! dear child, ನ: our, ಯಾ ಬುದ್ಧಿ: mind, ಸತತಂ always, ವೇದಮನ್ತ್ರಾನುಸಾರಿಣೀ follows Vedic hymns that one, ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ for your sake, ವನವಾಸಾನುಸಾರಿಣೀ one seeking the forest life, ಕೃತಾ is made.

O dear child, our minds always pursue the study of vedic hymns. For your sake now they are made to follow the life in the forest.
ಹೃದಯೇಷ್ವೇವ ತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತಿ ವೇದಾ ಯೇ ನಃ ಪರಂ ಧನಮ್.

ವತ್ಸ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಪಿ ಗೃಹೇಷ್ವೇವ ದಾರಾಶ್ಚಾರಿತ್ರರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.45.25৷৷


ನಃ our, ಪರಂ ಧನಮ್ greatest wealth, ಯೇ those, ವೇದಾಃ the Vedas, ಹೃದಯೇಷ್ವೇವ in our hearts, ತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತಿ are remaining, ದಾರಾ ಅಪಿ our wives also, ಚಾರಿತ್ರರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ protected by fidelity, ಗೃಹೇಷ್ವೇವ at home, ವತ್ಸ್ಯನ್ತಿ shall stay.

The Vedas are our greatest wealth and they reside in our hearts. Our wives, protected by their fidelity, shall stay at home.
ನ ಪುನರ್ನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ ಕಾರ್ಯಸ್ತ್ವದ್ಗತೌ ಸುಕೃತಾ ಮತಿಃ.

ತ್ವಯಿ ಧರ್ಮವ್ಯಪೇಕ್ಷೇ ತು ಕಿಂ ಸ್ಯಾದ್ಧರ್ಮಪಥೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್৷৷2.45.26৷৷


ಪುನಃ again (another), ನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ decision, ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಃ should not be taken, ತ್ವದ್ಗತೌ on your journey, ಮತಿಃ mind, ಸುಕೃತಾ is well set, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ಧರ್ಮವ್ಯಪೇಕ್ಷೇ reluctant to follow 'dharma', ಧರ್ಮಪಥೇ in the path of righteousness, ಕಿಮ್ what?, ಸ್ಥಿತಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ is left now?

We are not going to revoke our decision. We have made up our minds to follow you (into the forest). If you have no regard for this decision, then who will adhere to the path of righteousness?
ಯಾಚಿತೋ ನೋ ನಿವರ್ತಸ್ವ ಹಂಸಶುಕ್ಲಶಿರೋರುಹೈಃ.

ಶಿರೋಭಿರ್ನಿಭೃತಾಚಾರ ಮಹೀಪತನಪಾಂಸುಲೈಃ৷৷2.45.27৷৷


ನಿಭೃತಾಚಾರ ever firm in duty, ಮಹೀಪತನಪಾಂಸುಲೈಃ soiled with the dust fallen on the ground, ಹಂಸಶುಕ್ಲಶಿರೋರುಹೈಃ having hairs white like the (plumes of a) swan, ನಃ our, ಶಿರೋಭಿಃ with our heads, ಯಾಚಿತಃ beg of you, ನಿವರ್ತಸ್ವ you may return.

O Rama, you are firm in your duty.We beseech you, our heads bowed with swan-white hair and soiled with dust, to return to Ayodhya.
ಬಹೂನಾಂ ವಿತತಾ ಯಜ್ಞಾ ದ್ವಿಜಾನಾಂ ಯ ಇಹಾಗತಾಃ.

ತೇಷಾಂ ಸಮಾಪ್ತಿರಾಯತ್ತಾ ತವ ವತ್ಸ! ನಿವರ್ತನೇ৷৷2.45.28৷৷


ಯೇ who, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಾಃ have arrived, ಬಹೂನಾಮ್ many, ದ್ವಿಜಾನಾಮ್ brahmins, ಯಜ್ಞಾಃ sacrifices, ವಿತತಾಃ commenced, ವತ್ಸ! O dear child, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಸಮಾಪ್ತಿಃ consummation, ತವ your, ನಿವರ್ತನೇ returning, ಆಯತ್ತಾ is dependent.

Many of those brahmins who arrived here have commenced their sacrifices. O dear child, their consummation depends on your return.
ಭಕ್ತಿಮನ್ತಿ ಹಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಜಙ್ಗಮಾಜಙ್ಗಮಾನಿ ಚ.

ಯಾಚಮಾನೇಷು ರಾಮ! ತ್ವಂ ಭಕ್ತಿಂ ಭಕ್ತೇಷು ದರ್ಶಯ৷৷2.45.29৷৷


ರಾಮ! Rama, ಜಙ್ಗಮಾಜಙ್ಗಮಾನಿ movable and immovable, ಭೂತಾನಿ living beings, ಭಕ್ತಿಮನ್ತಿ ಹಿ are devoted to you, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯಾಚಮಾನೇಷು supplicants, ಭಕ್ತೇಷು in devotees, ಭಕ್ತಿಮ್ devotion, ದರ್ಶಯ show.

O Rama, all these living beings, movable and immovable, are devoted to you and are entreating you with devotion to return. Show consideration to those supplicants.
ಅನುಗನ್ತುಮಶಕ್ತಾ ಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಮೂಲೈರುದ್ಧತವೇಗಿನಃ.

ಉನ್ನತಾ ವಾಯುವೇಗೇನ ವಿಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀವ ಪಾದಪಾಃ৷৷2.45.30৷৷


ಮೂಲೈಃ with their roots, ಉದ್ಧತವೇಗಿನಃ crushed with their speed, ಪಾದಪಾಃ trees, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಅನುಗನ್ತುಮ್ to follow, ಅಶಕ್ತಾಃ unable, ವಾಯುವೇಗೇನ with the speed of wind, ಉನ್ನತಾಃ uplifted, ವಿಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀವ weeping like.

Although the trees uplifted by the speed of the wind, intend to follow you, their movement is stalled by their roots. Unable, they appear to be weeping.
ನಿಶ್ಚೇಷ್ಟಾಹಾರಸಞ್ಚಾರಾ ವೃಕ್ಷೈಕಸ್ಥಾನವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ.

ಪಕ್ಷಿಣೋಪಿ ಪ್ರಯಾಚನ್ತೇ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನುಕಮ್ಪಿನಮ್৷৷2.45.31৷৷


ಪಕ್ಷಿಣೋಪಿ even the birds, ನಿಶ್ಚೇಷ್ಟಾಹಾರಸಞ್ಚಾರಾಃ without foraging for food and wanderings, ವೃಕ್ಷೈಕಸ್ಥಾನವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ perched on the trees at one place, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನುಕಮ್ಪಿನಮ್ one compassionate to all creatures, ಪ್ರಯಾಚನ್ತೇ are imploring.

Even the birds instead of foraging for food are sitting motionless on the trees at one place. They are imploring you, you who are compassionate to all creatures, to return to Ayodhya.
ಏವಂ ವಿಕ್ರೋಶತಾಂ ತೇಷಾಂ ದ್ವಿಜಾತೀನಾಂ ನಿವರ್ತನೇ.

ದದೃಶೇ ತಮಸಾ ತತ್ರ ವಾರಯನ್ತೀವ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷2.45.32৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ನಿವರ್ತನೇ seeking his return, ತೇಷಾಂ ದ್ವಿಜಾತೀನಾಮ್ those brahmins, ವಿಕ್ರೋಶತಾಮ್ crying, ತತ್ರ there, ತಮಸಾ Tamasa river, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ವಾರಯನ್ತೀವ as if preventing, ದದೃಶೇ appeared.

While those brahmins were thus crying out, river Tamasa came into view as if seeking Rama to turn back to Ayodhya.
ತತಃ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋಪಿ ರಥಾದ್ವಿಮುಚ್ಯ

ಶ್ರಾನ್ತಾನ್ಹಯಾನ್ಸಮ್ಪರಿವರ್ತ್ಯ ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್.

ಪೀತೋದಕಾಂಸ್ತೋಯಪರಿಪ್ಲುತಾಙ್ಗಾ-

ನಚಾರಯದ್ವೈ ತಮಸಾವಿದೂರೇ৷৷2.45.33৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋಪಿ Sumantra also, ಶ್ರಾನ್ತಾನ್ fatigued, ಹಯಾನ್ horses, ರಥಾತ್ from the chariot, ವಿಮುಚ್ಯ having unyoked, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಸಮ್ಪರಿವರ್ತ್ಯ allowing them to roll and relax, ಪೀತೋದಕಾನ್ making them drink water, ತೋಯಪರಿಪ್ಲುತಾಙ್ಗಾನ್ bathing them in water, ತಮಸಾವಿದೂರೇ not far from river Tamasa, ಅಚಾರಯತ್ made them graze.

Then Sumantra also unyoked the fatigued horses from the chariot and quickly allowed them to roll and relax on the ground. Having made the horses drink and dip
in water, he released them for grazing not far from Tamasa river.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಪಞ್ಚಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfifth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
