[Rama crosses the frontiers of the kingdom of Kosala -- crosses rivers Vedasruti and Gomati-speaks to Sumantra.]

ರಾಮೋಪಿ ರಾತ್ರಿಶೇಷೇಣ ತೇನೈವ ಮಹದನ್ತರಮ್.

ಜಗಾಮ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ ಪಿತುರಾಜ್ಞಾಮನುಸ್ಮರನ್৷৷2.49.1৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ foremost among men, ರಾಮೋಪಿ Rama also, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಆಜ್ಞಾಮ್ command, ಅನುಸ್ಮರನ್ recollecting, ತೇನ by that, ರಾತ್ರಿಶೇಷೇಣೈವ in the remaining part of the night, ಮಹತ್ vast, ಅನ್ತರಮ್ distance, ಜಗಾಮ covered.

Recollecting his father's command, Rama, the foremost among men, covered a long distance during the remaining part of the night.
ತಥೈವ ಗಚ್ಛತಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ವ್ಯಪಾಯಾದ್ರಜನೀ ಶಿವಾ.

ಉಪಾಸ್ಯ ಶಿವಾಂ ಸನ್ಧ್ಯಾಂ ವಿಷಯಾನ್ತಂ ವ್ಯಗಾಹತ৷৷2.49.2৷৷


ತಸ್ಯ for him, ತಥಾ in that manner, ಗಚ್ಛತಃ ಏವ thus travelling, ಶಿವಾ auspicious, ರಜನೀ night, ವ್ಯಪಾಯಾತ್ ended, (ಸಃ he), ಶಿವಾಮ್ auspicious, ಸನ್ಧ್ಯಾಮ್ sandhya (morning twilight), ಉಪಾಸ್ಯ having worshipped, ವಿಷಯಾನ್ತಮ್ frontiers of the country, ವ್ಯಗಾಹತ reached.

While Rama was thus travelling, the auspicious night ended. With the sandhya (morning twilight), worship over, he reached the frontiers of the country.
ಗ್ರಾಮಾನ್ ವಿಕೃಷ್ಟಸೀಮಾನ್ತಾನ್ ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾನಿ ವನಾನಿ ಚ.

ಪಶ್ಯನ್ನತಿಯಯೌ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಶನೈರಿವ ಹಯೋತ್ತಮೈಃ৷৷2.49.3৷৷

ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ ವಚೋ ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ಗ್ರಾಮಸಂವಾಸವಾಸಿನಾಮ್.


ವಿಕೃಷ್ಟಸೀಮಾನ್ತಾನ್ ploughed outskirts, ಗ್ರಾಮಾನ್ villages, ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾನಿ flowered, ವನಾನಿ ಚ forests, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ seeing, ಗ್ರಾಮಸಂವಾಸವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ living in the midst of villages, ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ of the people, ವಚಃ discussions, ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ hearing, ಹಯೋತ್ತಮೈಃ on those excellent horses, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly travelling, ಶನೈರಿವ as if going slowly, ಅತಿಯಯೌ went a long distance.

Watching the villages furrowed at the outskirts, forests in blossom, hearing the gossips of the people living in the midst of villages, Rama felt he was moving very slowly whereas he had actually covered a long distance with those excellent (swift) horses.
ರಾಜಾನಂ ಧಿಗ್ದಶರಥಂ ಕಾಮಸ್ಯ ವಶಮಾಗತಮ್৷৷2.49.4৷৷

ಹಾ ನೃಶಂಸಾದ್ಯ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಪಾಪಾ ಪಾಪಾನುಬನ್ಧಿನೀ.

ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಾ ಸಮ್ಭಿನ್ನಮರ್ಯಾದಾ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಕರ್ಮಣಿ ವರ್ತತೇ৷৷2.49.5৷৷

ಯಾ ಪುತ್ರಮೀದೃಶಂ ರಾಜ್ಞಃ ಪ್ರವಾಸಯತಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್.

ವನವಾಸೇ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಂ ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶಂ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಮ್৷৷2.49.6৷৷


ಕಾಮಸ್ಯ to passion, ವಶಮಾಗತಮ್ overtaken by, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ದಶರಥಮ್ Dasaratha, ಧಿಕ್ fie on him, ಹಾ what a pity, ನೃಶಂಸಾ wicked, ಪಾಪಾ sinful, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಪಾಪಾನುಬನ್ಧಿನೀ is committed to sins, ಯಾ that Kaikeyi, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್ righteous, ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಮ್ sagacious, ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶಮ್ full of compassion, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಮ್ one who has control over his senses, ಈದೃಶಮ್ such a person, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ ಪುತ್ರಮ್ king's son, ವನವಾಸೇ to dwell in the forest, ಪ್ರವಾಸಯತಿ has banished, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಾ cruel, ಸಮ್ಭಿನ್ನಮರ್ಯಾದಾ breaking all limits of decency, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಕರ್ಮಣಿ in an extremely cruel act, ವರ್ತತೇ is committed.

(The villagers were speaking among themselves) Fie on the king who is overtaken by passion! Alas, the heartless, sinful Kaikeyi, indulging in evil has banished into the forest this prince who is righteous and sagacious, compassionate and self-restrained. How could this cruel Kaikeyi, by breaking all limits of decorum resort to such atrocious action?
ಕಥಂ ನಾಮ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾ ಸೀತಾ ಜನಕನನ್ದಿನೀ.

ಸದಾ ಸುಖೇಷ್ವಭಿರತಾ ದುಃಖಾನ್ಯನುಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.49.7৷৷


ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾ highly fortunate, ಜನಕನನ್ದಿನೀ Janaka's daughter, ಸದಾ always, ಸುಖೇಷು in luxury, ಅಭಿರತಾ always attached, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಕಥಂ ನಾಮ how, ದುಃಖಾನಿ discomforts, ಅನುಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will experience.

How will Sita, highly fortunate daughter of Janaka and used to comforts endure these sufferings?
ಅಹೋ! ದಶರಥೋ ರಾಜಾ ನಿಸ್ನೇಹಃ ಸ್ವಸುತಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.

ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮನಘಂ ರಾಮಂ ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತುಮಿಹೇಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.49.8৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಸ್ವಸುತಮ್ own son, ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮ್ of the subjects, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ dear, ಅನಘಮ್ sinless, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ನಿಸ್ನೇಹಃ without affection, ಇಹ here, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತುಮ್ to abandon, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ wishes, ಅಹೋ! alas!

Alas, the loveless king Dasaratha now intends to abandon his own sinless son Rama who is dear to the subjects.
ಏತಾ ವಾಚೋ ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ಗ್ರಾಮಸಂವಾಸವಾಸಿನಾಮ್.

ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ನತಿಯಯೌ ವೀರಃ ಕೋಸಲಾನ್ ಕೋಸಲೇಶ್ವರಃ৷৷2.49.9৷৷


ವೀರಃ valiant, ಕೋಸಲೇಶ್ವರಃ lord of Kosala Rama, ಗ್ರಾಮಸಂವಾಸವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ living in villages and hamlets, ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ people's, ಏತಾಃ these, ವಾಚಃ words, ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ while listening, ಕೋಸಲಾನ್ boundaries of Kosala kingdom, ಅತಿ ಯಯೌ crossed.

Such were the words of people living in villages and hamlets that Rama the valiant lord of Kosala happened to hear as he was crossing the boundaries of Kosala.
ತತೋ ವೇದಶ್ರುತಿಂ ನಾಮ ಶಿವವಾರಿವಹಾಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಉತ್ತೀರ್ಯಾಭಿಮುಖಃ ಪ್ರಾಯಾದಗಸ್ತ್ಯಾಧ್ಯುಷಿತಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್৷৷2.49.10৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಶಿವವಾರಿವಹಾಮ್ carrying the auspicious waters, ವೇದಶ್ರುತಿಂ ನಾಮ by name
Vedasruti, ನದೀಮ್ river, ಉತ್ತೀರ್ಯ having crossed, ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಾಧ್ಯುಷಿತಾಮ್ where Agastya was residing, ದಿಶಮ್ quarter, ಅಭಿಮುಖಃ in the direction of, ಪ್ರಾಯಾತ್ went.

He then crossed the river Vedasruti flowing with sacred waters and went in the southern direction where sage Agastya resided.
ಗತ್ವಾ ತು ಸುಚಿರಂ ಕಾಲಂ ತತಃ ಶೀತಜಲಾಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಗೋಮತೀಂ ಗೋಯುತಾನೂಪಾಮತರತ್ಸಾಗರಙ್ಗಮಾಮ್৷৷2.49.11৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಸುಚಿರಂ ಕಾಲಮ್ for a long time, ಗತ್ವಾ having travelled, ಶೀತ ಜಲಾಮ್ of cool waters, ಗೋಯುತಾನೂಪಾಮ್ cows abounding in marshy areas, ಸಾಗರಙ್ಗಮಾಮ್ flowing into the sea, ಗೋಮತೀಮ್ Gomati, ನದೀಮ್ river, ಅತರತ್ crossed.

Travelling for a long time along the river Gomati full of cool waters on whose marshy bank cows grazed, Rama crossed it at the point where it flows into the sea.
ಗೋಮತೀಂ ಚಾಪ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ರಾಘವಃ ಶೀಘ್ರಗೈರ್ಹಯೈಃ.

ಮಯೂರಹಂಸಾಭಿರುತಾಂ ತತಾರ ಸ್ಯನ್ದಿಕಾಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.49.12৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಶೀಘ್ರಗೈಃ with swift-moving, ಹಯೈಃ with horses, ಗೋಮತೀಂ ಚಾಪಿ Gomati river also, ಅತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ having crossed, ಮಯೂರಹಂಸಾಭಿರುತಾಮ್ echoed with the cries of peacocks and swans, ಸ್ಯನ್ದಿಕಾಮ್ ನದೀಮ್ river Syandika, ತತಾರ crossed.

Gomati gone, Rama with the swift-moving horses crossed the river Syandika echoing with the cries of peacocks and swans.
ಸ ಮಹೀಂ ಮನುನಾ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ದತ್ತಾಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕವೇ ಪುರಾ.

ಸ್ಫೀತಾಂ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾವೃತಾಂ ರಾಮೋ ವೈದೇಹೀಮನ್ವದರ್ಶಯತ್৷৷2.49.13৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಪುರಾ formerly, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ಮನುನಾ by Manu, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕವೇ to Ikshvaku, ದತ್ತಾಮ್ bestowed, ಸ್ಫೀತಾಮ್ vast tracts, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾವೃತಾಮ್ encircled by kingdoms, ಮಹೀಮ್ land, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ to Sita, ಅನ್ವದರ್ಶಯತ್ showed.

Rama showed Sita vast tracts of land encircled by kingdoms which were formerly bestowed upon Ikshvaku by emperor Manu.
ಸೂತ ಇತ್ಯೇವ ಚಾಭಾಷ್ಯ ಸಾರಥಿಂ ತಮಭೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಶಃ.

ಹಂಸಮತ್ತಸ್ವರಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನುವಾಚ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ৷৷2.19.14৷৷


ಹಂಸಮತ್ತಸ್ವರಃ resembling the intoxicated voice of swans, ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ the best among men,
ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ graceful, ಸೂತ ಇತ್ಯೇವ O charioteer saying so, ತಂ ಸಾರಥಿಮ್ that charioteer, ಅಭೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಶ: repeatedly, ಆಭಾಷ್ಯ having uttered, ಉವಾಚ said.

Graceful Rama, best among men with a voice resembling that of an intoxicated swan, called the charioteer again and again and said:
ಕದಾಹಂ ಪುನರಾಗಮ್ಯ ಸರಯ್ವಾ ಪುಷ್ಪಿತೇ ವನೇ.

ಮೃಗಯಾಂ ಪರ್ಯಟಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ಸಙ್ಗತಃ৷৷2.49.15৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪುನಃ again, ಆಗಮ್ಯ having returned, ಮಾತ್ರಾ with mother, ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ also with father, ಸಙ್ಗತಃ united with, ಸರಯ್ವಾ: Sarayu river's, ಪುಷ್ಪಿತೇ blossoming, ವನೇ groves, ಮೃಗಯಾಮ್ hunting, ಕದಾ when, ಪರ್ಯಟಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall roam about.

When shall I return and reunite with my father and mother and go hunting in the blooming forest on the bank of the river Sarayu?
ನಾತ್ಯರ್ಥಮಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಾಮಿ ಮೃಗಯಾಂ ಸರಯೂವನೇ.

ರತಿರ್ಹ್ಯೇಷಾತುಲಾ ಲೋಕೇ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಗಣಸಮ್ಮತಾ৷৷2.49.16৷৷


ಏಷಾ this hunting, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಅತುಲಾ incomparable, ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಗಣಸಮ್ಮತಾ is accepted by royal sages, ರತಿರ್ಹಿ is delightful (sport indeed), ಸರಯೂವನೇ in the Sarayu forest of, ಮೃಗಯಾಮ್ hunting, ಅತ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ greatly, ನಾಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಾಮಿ do not desire.

In this world, hunting is a unique pleasure. It is regarded as a delightful sport for
royal sages. But I do not have a great longing for hunting in the forest on the bank of river Sarayu.
ರಾಜರ್ಷೀಣಾಂ ಹಿ ಲೋಕೇಸ್ಮಿನ್ ರತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಮೃಗಯಾ ವನೇ.

ಕಾಲೇ ಕೃತಾಂ ತಾಂ ಮನುಜೈರ್ಘನ್ವಿನಾಮಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.49.17৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this, ಲೋಕೇ world, ವನೇ in the woods, ಮೃಗಯಾ hunting, ರಾಜರ್ಷೀಣಾಮ್ of royal sages, ರತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಹಿ is for their pleasure, ಮನುಜೈಃ by people, ಕಾಲೇ in appropriate times, ಕೃತಾಮ್ is undertaken,
ಧನ್ವಿನಾಮ್ for the bowmen, ಅಭಿಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿತಾಮ್ a sought after one, ತಾಮ್ that (hunting I do not seek.)

In this world, hunting in the woods is a pleasure for royal sages and is greatly sought after by bowmen. This was later resorted to by others.
ಸ ತಮಧ್ವಾನಮೈಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕಸ್ಸೂತಂ ಮಧುರಯಾ ಗಿರಾ.

ತಂ ತಮರ್ಥಮಭಿಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ಯಯೌ ವಾಕ್ಯಮುದೀರಯನ್৷৷2.49.18৷৷


ಸಃ ಐಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕಃ that descendant of Ikshvaku, Rama, ತಮ್ that, ಸೂತಮ್ to charioteer, ಮಧುರಯಾ in sweet, ಗಿರಾ words, ತಮ್ ತಮ್ these and other, ಅರ್ಥಮ್ thoughts, ಅಭಿಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ regarding, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಉದೀರಯನ್ pronouncing, ಅಧ್ವಾನಮ್ the path, ಯಯೌ went (covered).

The descendant of Ikshvaku related to the charioteer in a sweet voice the thoughts that came to him and went on the way (continued his journey).
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕೋನಪಞ್ಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyninth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
