[Rama reaches Srngiberapura on the bank of the Ganga--Guha, chief of the nishadas welcomes Rama.]

ವಿಶಾಲಾನ್ ಕೋಸಲಾನ್ ರಮ್ಯಾನ್ ಯಾತ್ವಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಪೂರ್ವಜಃ.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಭಿಮುಖೋ ಧೀಮಾನ್ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.50.1৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಪೂರ್ವಜಃ Lakshmana's elder brother, ಧೀಮಾನ್ sagacious, ರಮ್ಯಾನ್ beautiful, ವಿಶಾಲಾನ್ vast, ಕೋಸಲಾನ್ kingdom of Kosala, ಯಾತ್ವಾ gone beyond, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಭಿಮುಖಃ facing Ayodhya, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded hands, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Having crossed the vast, beautiful kingdom of Kosala, the sagacious elder brother of Lakshmana stood facing Ayodhya with folded palms and said:
ಆಪೃಚ್ಛೇ ತ್ವಾಂ ಪುರೀಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೇ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಪರಿಪಾಲಿತೇ.

ದೈವತಾನಿ ಚ ಯಾನಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ಪಾಲಯನ್ತಿ ವಸನ್ತಿ ಚ৷৷2.50.2৷৷


ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಪರಿಪಾಲಿತೇ a city ruled by the Kakutsthas, ಪುರೀಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೇ best among cities, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಯಾನಿ ದೈವತಾನಿ all those gods, ವಸನ್ತಿ inhabiting, ಪಾಲಯನ್ತಿ ಚ are guarding you also, ಆಪೃಚ್ಛೇ I am taking leave.

O Ayodhya, the best of cities ruled by those born in the Kakutstha race! I take leave of you and of all those gods inhabiting and guarding you.
ನಿವೃತ್ತವನವಾಸಸ್ತ್ವಾಮನೃಣೋ ಜಗತೀಪತೇಃ.

ಪುನರ್ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ಸಹ ಸಙ್ಗತಃ৷৷2.50.3৷৷


ಜಗತೀಪತೇಃ lord of the world (king Dasaratha), ಅನೃಣಃ free from debt, ನಿವೃತ್ತವನವಾಸಃ having completed forest life, ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ with mother, ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ with father, ಸಙ್ಗತಃ re-united, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಪುನಃ again, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will see.

On completion of exile and my filial obligations to king Dasaratha, lord of the world, discharged, I shall, re-united with my parents, see you again.
ತತೋ ರುಧಿರತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ಭುಜಮುದ್ಯಮ್ಯ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್.

ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖೋ ದೀನೋಬ್ರವೀಜ್ಜಾನಪದಂ ಜನಮ್৷৷2.50.4৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಃ face filled with tears, ರುಧಿರತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ eyes copper-red, ದೀನಃ dejected, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್ right, ಭುಜಮ್ arm, ಉದ್ಯಮ್ಯ having raised, ಜಾನಪದಮ್ pertaining to villages, ಜನಮ್ people, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

He looked miserable, his copper-red eyes filled with tears. He raised his right hand
and said to the villagers who had come to see him:
ಅನುಕ್ರೋಶೋ ದಯಾ ಚೈವ ಯಥಾರ್ಹಂ ಮಯಿ ವಃ ಕೃತಃ.

ಚಿರಂ ದುಃಖಸ್ಯ ಪಾಪೀಯೋ ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮರ್ಥಸಿದ್ಧಯೇ৷৷2.50.5৷৷


ಮಯಿ in me, ಯಥಾರ್ಹಮ್ appropriately, ವಃ to you, ದಯಾ ಚೈವ kindness, ಅನುಕ್ರೋಶಃ compassion, ಕೃತಃ has been done, ದುಃಖಸ್ಯ of suffering, ಚಿರಮ್ for long, ಪಾಪೀಯಃ is sinful, ಅರ್ಥಸಿದ್ಧಯೇ to discharge your duties, ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ go.

You have aptly shown your kindness and compassion to me. It is not proper to prolong one's grief. So do go and altend to your duties.
ತೇಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಚಾಪಿ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್.

ವಿಲಪನ್ತೋ ನರಾ ಘೋರಂ ವ್ಯತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್৷৷2.50.6৷৷


ತೇ ನರಾಃ those people, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ high-souled, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having paid respect, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಚಾಪಿ circumambulation, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ಘೋರಮ್ frightfully, ವಿಲಪನ್ತಃ lamenting, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ hither and thither, ವ್ಯತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತ stood (looking at him).

All of them paid their homage by circumambulating the high-souled Rama. Crying
bitterly, they stood here and there.
ತಥಾ ವಿಲಪತಾಂ ತೇಷಾಮತೃಪ್ತಾನಾಂ ಚ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಅಚಕ್ಷುರ್ವಿಷಯಂ ಪ್ರಾಯಾದ್ಯಥಾರ್ಕಃ ಕ್ಷಣದಾಮುಖೇ৷৷2.50.7৷৷


ಅತೃಪ್ತಾನಾಮ್ not satisfied, ತೇಷಾಮ್ them, ತಥಾ in that manner, ವಿಲಪತಾಮ್ lamenting, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಕ್ಷಣದಾಮುಖೇ at nightfall, ಅರ್ಕಃ the Sun, ಯಥಾ like that, ಅಚಕ್ಷುರ್ವಿಷಯಮ್ out of sight, ಪ್ರಾಯಾತ್ went.

Not yet satisfied (they wanted to linger longer), they stood weeping, while Rama went out of sight just as the Sun disappears at nightfall.
ತತೋ ಧಾನ್ಯಧನೋಪೇತಾನ್ ದಾನಶೀಲಜನಾನ್ ಶಿವಾನ್.

ಅಕುತಶ್ಚಿದ್ಭಯಾನ್ ರಮ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚೈತ್ಯಯೂಪಸಮಾವೃತಾನ್৷৷2.50.8৷৷

ಉದ್ಯಾನಾಮ್ರವನೋಪೇತಾನ್ ಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಸಲಿಲಾಶಯಾನ್.

ತುಷ್ಟಪುಷ್ಟಜನಾಕೀರ್ಣಾನ್ ಗೋಕುಲಾಕುಲಸೇವಿತಾನ್৷৷2.50.9৷৷

ಲಕ್ಷಣೀಯಾನ್ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಘೋಷಾಭಿನಾದಿತಾನ್.

ತತಃ then, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ tiger (best) among men (Rama), ಧಾನ್ಯಧನೋಪೇತಾನ್ rich in wealth and foodgrain, ದಾನಶೀಲಜನಾನ್ with charitable people, ಶಿವಾನ್ auspicious, ಅಕುತಶ್ಚಿದ್ಭಯಾನ್ free from fear, ರಮ್ಯಾನ್ charming, ಚೈತ್ಯಯೂಪಸಮಾವೃತಾನ್ surrounded by sacrificial altars and posts, ಉದ್ಯಾನಾಮ್ರವನೋಪೇತಾನ್ filled with pleasure gardens and mango groves, ಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಸಲಿಲಾಶಯಾನ್ tanks filled with water, ತುಷ್ಟಪುಷ್ಟಜನಾಕೀರ್ಣಾನ್ full of contented and well-nourished people, ಗೋಕುಲಾಕುಲಸೇವಿತಾನ್ with herds of cattle, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ for kings, ಲಕ್ಷಣೀಯಾನ್ fit to be seen, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಘೋಷಾಭಿನಾದಿತಾನ್ echoed with the sounds of Vedic recitations, ಕೋಸಲಾನ್ Kosala kingdom, ರಥೇನ by the chariot, ಅತ್ಯವರ್ತತ crossed over.

Rama, the best of men, crossed the auspicious land of Kosala which was worth seeing by kings. It looked charming with sacrificial posts and altars, pleasure gardens and mango groves and tanks filled with water. It was rich with herds of
cattle, wealth and foodgrains. It was inhabited by charitable, contented and well-nourished people free from fear from any quarter. And it reverberated with the sounds of Vedic recitations.
ಮಧ್ಯೇನಮುದಿತಂ ಸ್ಫೀತಂ ರಮ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನಸಮಾಕುಲಮ್.

ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಭೋಗ್ಯಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಯಯೌ ಧೃತಿಮತಾಂ ವರಃ৷৷2.50.11৷৷


ಧೃತಿಮತಾಮ್ among those endowed with fortitude, ವರಃ best, ಮುದಿತಮ್ pleased, ಸ್ಫೀತಮ್ prosperous, ರಮ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನಸಮಾಕುಲಮ್ full of ravishing gardens, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ of kings, ಭೋಗ್ಯಮ್ fit to be enjoyed, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ of that kingdom, ಮಧ್ಯೇನ in its middle, ಯಯೌ went.

Rama, the greatest among those endowed with fortitude, travelled through the
middle of the kingdom which was pleasing, prosperous and full of ravishing gardens fit to be enjoyed by kings.
ತತ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಪಥಗಾಂ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂ ಶಿವತೋಯಾಮಶೈವಲಾಮ್.

ದದರ್ಶ ರಾಘವೋ ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಾಮೃಷಿನಿಷೇವಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.50.12৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ತ್ರಿಪಥಗಾಮ್ flowing in three worlds, ರಮ್ಯಾಮ್ beautiful, ಶಿವತೋಯಾಮ್ sacred waters, ಆಶೈವಲಾಮ್ free from moss, ಪುಣ್ಯಾಮ್ holy, ಋಷಿಸೇವಿತಾಮ್ worshipped by sages, ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ Ganga, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

There Rama saw the holy Ganga flowing in three (worlds) with her sacred waters, free from moss, and worshipped by sages.
ಆಶ್ರಮೈರವಿದೂರಸ್ಥೈಃ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ಭಿಸ್ಸಮಲಙ್ಕೃತಾಮ್.

ಕಾಲೇಪ್ಸರೋಭಿರ್ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಭಿ ಸ್ಸೇವಿತಾಮ್ಭೋಹ್ರದಾಂ ಶಿವಾಮ್৷৷2.50.13৷৷


ಅವಿದೂರಸ್ಥೈಃ by those situated not far away, ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ಭಿಃ by the graceful, ಆಶ್ರಮೈಃ by hermitages, ಸಮಲಙ್ಕೃತಾಮ್ adorned with, ಕಾಲೇ at times, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಭಿಃ delightful, ಅಪ್ಸರೋಭಿಃ by nymphs, ಸೇವಿತಾಮ್ಭೋಹ್ರದಾಮ್ sport in her lakes, ಶಿವಾಮ್ auspicious (Ganga).

The holy Ganga, adorned with graceful hermitages situated not far away is visited at times by delightful nymphs who sport in her lakes.
ದೇವದಾನವಗನ್ಧರ್ವೈಃ ಕಿನ್ನರೈರುಪಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್.

ನಾನಾಗನ್ಧರ್ವಪತ್ನೀಭಿ ಸ್ಸೇವಿತಾಂ ಸತತಂ ಶಿವಾಮ್৷৷2.50.14৷৷


ದೇವದಾನವಗನ್ಧರ್ವೈಃ by devatas, danavas, and gandharvas, ಕಿನ್ನರೈಃ by kinneras, ಉಪಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್ looking splendid, ನಾನಾಗನ್ಧರ್ವಪತ್ನೀಭಿಃ by wives of several gandharvas, ಸತತಮ್ always, ಸೇವಿತಾಮ್, inhabited, ಶಿವಾಮ್ auspicious(Ganga).

The Ganga is graced by devatas, danavas, gandharvas and kinneras. Wives of several gandharvas always visit this auspicious river.
ದೇವಾಕ್ರೀಡಶತಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಂ ದೇವೋದ್ಯಾನಶತಾಯುತಾಮ್.

ದೇವಾರ್ಥಮಾಕಾಶಗಮಾಂ ವಿಖ್ಯಾತಾಂ ದೇವಪದ್ಮಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.50.15৷৷


ದೇವಾಕ್ರೀಡಶತಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಂ filled with hundreds of hills serving as sporting places for devatas ದೇವೋದ್ಯಾನಶತಾಯುತಾಮ್ hundreds of pleasure-gardens for devatas, ದೇವಾರ್ಥಮ್ for the sake of devatas, ಆಕಾಶಗಮಾಮ್ flowing through heaven, ದೇವಪದ್ಮಿನೀಮ್ as Devapadmini, where celestial lotuses grow, ವಿಖ್ಯಾತಾಮ್ is well-known.

Since this river flows through heavens for the gods, it is well-known as 'Devapadmini' where celestial lotuses grow. The river embraces hundreds of hills serving as sporting places and pleasure-gardens for gods.
ಜಲಾಘಾತಾಟ್ಟಹಾಸೋಗ್ರಾಂ ಫೇನನಿರ್ಮಲಹಾಸಿನೀಮ್.

ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ವೇಣೀಕೃತಜಲಾಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದಾವರ್ತಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.50.16৷৷


ಜಲಾಘಾತಾಟ್ಟಹಾಸೋಗ್ರಾಮ್ ferocious with the sound of dashing waters resembling loud laughter, ಫೇನನಿರ್ಮಲಹಾಸಿನೀಮ್ with the sparkling smile of foam, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ವೇಣೀಕೃತಜಲಾಮ್ with waters flowing straight like a maiden's braid, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಆವರ್ತಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್ shining with whirlpools.

The sound of dashing waters of the Ganga is like her laughter and the foam like her sparkling smile. Here she flows straight like the braid of a maiden and there in whirlpools.
ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಸ್ತಿಮಿತಗಮ್ಭೀರಾಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ವೇಗಜಲಾಕುಲಾಮ್.

ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ಗಮ್ಭೀರನಿರ್ಘೋಷಾಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ಭೈರವನಿಸ್ವನಾಮ್৷৷2.50.17৷৷


ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at places, ಸ್ತಿಮಿತಗಮ್ಭೀರಾಮ್ was deep and quiet, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at places, ವೇಗಜಲಾಕುಲಾಮ್ perturbed due to fast-flowing waters, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at places, ಗಮ್ಭೀರನಿರ್ಘೋಷಾಮ್ making majestic sound, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some place, ಭೈರವನಿಸ್ವನಾಮ್ makes dreadful sounds.

Here the Ganga runs deep but quiet, there she looks perturbed due to fast-flowing waters, here she flows with a deep groan and there with a dreadful roar.
ದೇವಸಙ್ಘಾಪ್ಲುತಜಲಾಂ ನಿರ್ಮಲೋತ್ಪಲಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್.

ಕ್ವಚಿದಾಭೋಗಪುಲಿನಾಂ ಕ್ವಚಿನ್ನಿರ್ಮಲವಾಲುಕಾಮ್৷৷2.50.18৷৷


ದೇವಸಙ್ಘಾಪ್ಲುತಜಲಾಮ್ in the waters of which hosts of celestials take ablutions, ನಿರ್ಮಲೋತ್ಪಲಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್ decked with pure blue lilies, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಅಭೋಗಪುಲಿನಾಮ್ with curved banks, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ನಿರ್ಮಲವಾಲುಕಾಮ್ white sands.

Here hosts of celestials take their ablutions and there she shines with lilies of pure blue. Here her banks are curved and there her bed is dotted with patches of white sand.
ಹಂಸಸಾರಸಸಙ್ಘುಷ್ಟಾಂ ಚಕ್ರವಾಕೋಪಕೂಜಿತಾಮ್.

ಸದಾ ಮದೈಶ್ಚ ವಿಹಗೈರಭಿಸನ್ನಾದಿತಾನ್ತರಾಮ್৷৷2.50.19৷৷


ಹಂಸಸಾರಸಸಙ್ಘುಷ್ಟಾಮ್ reverberating with cries of swans and cranes, ಚಕ್ರವಾಕೋಪಕೂಜಿತಾಮ್ filled with cries of chakravakas (ruddy geese), ಸದಾಮದೈಃ ವಿಹಗೈಃ always filled with passionate birds, ಅಭಿಸನ್ನಾದಿತಾನ್ತರಾಮ್ filled with sounds at intervals.

The river reverberates with the cries of swans, cranes and chakravakas (ruddy goose). It rings intermittently with the chirpings of birds charged with endless pasison.
ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ತೀರರುಹೈರ್ವೃಕ್ಷೈರ್ಮಾಲಾಭಿರಿವಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್.

ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ಫುಲ್ಲೋತ್ಪಲಚ್ಛನ್ನಾಂ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ಪದ್ಮವನಾಕುಲಾಮ್৷৷2.50.20৷৷


ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places,ತೀರರುಹೈಃ grown on the banks,ವೃಕ್ಷೈಃ with trees, ಮಾಲಾಭಿರಿವ like garlands,ಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್ decorated, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಫುಲ್ಲೋತ್ಪಲಚ್ಛನ್ನಾಮ್ covered with ful-blown water-lilies, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಪದ್ಮವನಾಕುಲಾಮ್ spread with multitudes of lotuses.

Here on her banks stand trees adorned as though with garlands, and there in her waters abound full-blown lilies and a forest of lotuses.
ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ಕುಮುದಷಣ್ಡೈಶ್ಚ ಕುಡ್ಮಲೈರುಪಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್.

ನಾನಾಪುಷ್ಪರಜೋಧ್ವಸ್ತಾಂ ಸಮದಾಮಿವ ಚ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್৷৷2.50.21৷৷


ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಕುಮುದಷಣ್ಡೈಶ್ಚ with hosts of water-lilies, ಕುಡ್ಮಲೈಃ half-blown flowers, ಉಪಶೋಭಿತಾಮ್ adorned, ನಾನಾಪುಷ್ಪರಜೋಧ್ವಸ್ತಾಮ್ pollen from different kinds of flowers, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ in some places, ಸಮದಾಮ್ ಇವ as if intoxicated with passion.

Here she is decked with hosts of water-lilies and half-blown flowers while elsewhere she looks intoxicated with the pollen fallen from various flowers.
ವ್ಯಪೇತಮಲಸಙ್ಘಾತಾಂ ಮಣಿನಿರ್ಮಲದರ್ಶನಾಮ್.

ದಿಶಾಗಜೈರ್ವನಗಜೈ ರ್ಮತ್ತೈಶ್ಚ ವರವಾರಣೈಃ৷৷2.50.22৷৷

ದೇವೋಪವಾಹ್ಯೈಶ್ಚ ಮುಹುಸ್ಸನ್ನಾದಿತವನಾನ್ತರಾಮ್.


ವ್ಯಪೇತಮಲಸಙ್ಘಾತಾಮ್ cleansed of heaps of impurities, ಮಣಿನಿರ್ಮಲದರ್ಶನಾಮ್ appearing like a
transparent gem, ದಿಶಾಗಜೈಃ by the elephants gaurding the quarters, ಮತ್ತೈಶ್ಚ by intoxicated ones, ವನಗಜೈಃ wild elephants, ದೇವೋಪವಾಹೈಃ by those suitable for carrying gods, ವರವಾರಣೈಃ with excellent elephants, ಮುಹುಃ repeatedly, ಸನ್ನಾದಿತವನಾನ್ತರಾಮ್ resounding in the interiors of the forest.

The river, cleansed of heaps of impurities, appears like a transparent gem. The interiors of forests on her banks always resounds with the trumpeting of mighty, intoxicated, wild elephants guarding the quarters, fit to be the vehicles of gods.
ಪ್ರಮದಾಮಿವ ಯತ್ನೇನ ಭೂಷಿತಾಂ ಭೂಷಣೋತ್ತಮೈಃ৷৷2.50.23৷৷

ಫಲೈಃ ಪುಷ್ಪೈಃ ಕಿಸಲಯೈರ್ವೃತಾಂ ಗುಲ್ಮೈರ್ದ್ವಿಜೈಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಶಿಂಶುಮಾರೈಶ್ಚ ನಕ್ರೈಶ್ಚ ಭುಜಙ್ಗೈಶ್ಚ ನಿಷೇವಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.50.24৷৷


ಫಲೈಃ with fruits, ಪುಷ್ಪೈಃ with flowers, ಕಿಸಲಯೈಃ with tender leaves or shoots, ಗುಲ್ಮೈಃ with shrubs, ತಥಾ similarly, ದ್ವಿಜೈಃ with birds, ವೃತಾಮ್ encompassed, ಭೂಷಣೋತ್ತಮೈಃ with excellent ornaments, ಯತ್ನೇನ carefully, ಭೂಷಿತಾಮ್ decorated, ಪ್ರಮದಾಮಿವ like a woman, ಶಿಂಶುಮಾರೈಶ್ಚ small whales, ನಕ್ರೈಶ್ಚ with crocodiles, ಭುಜಙ್ಗೈಶ್ಚ with serpents, ನಿಷೇವಿತಾಮ್ is served.

Just like a lady, Ganga is decorated with the best of ornaments; her banks are filled with fruits, flowers, tender leaves or shoots and (flowering) shrubs. It is inhabited by birds and brahmins and infested with sisumaras (small whales), crocodiles and serpents.
ವಿಷ್ಣುಪಾದಚ್ಯುತಾಂ ದಿವ್ಯಾಮಪಾಪಾಂ ಪಾಪನಾಶಿನೀಮ್.

ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ವಿಷ್ಣುಪಾದಚ್ಯುತಾಮ್ dropped from the feet of lord Visnu, ದಿವ್ಯಾಮ್ divine, ಅಪಾಪಾಮ್ sinless, ಪಾಪನಾಶಿನೀಮ್ destroyer of sins, ಸಾಗರತೇಜಸಾ due to the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha), ಶಙ್ಕರ ಜಟಾಜೂಟಾತ್ from the matted hair of lord Siva, ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಮ್
dropped, ಸಮುದ್ರಮಹಿಷೀಮ್ consort of the Ocean, ಸಾರಸಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚನಾದಿತಾಮ್ echoed with the cries of kraunchas and herons, ತಾಂ ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ that Ganga, ಶೃಙ್ಗಿಬೇರಪುರಂ ಪ್ರತಿ towards Srngiberapura, ಆಸಸಾದ reached.

Mighty-armed Rama reached Srngaberapura on the bank of this consort of the ocean, this Ganga loud with the cries of kraunchas and herons. This sinless, divine Ganga, destroyer of sins who flows from the feet of lord Visnu and by the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha) emerged from the matted locks of lord Siva.
ತಾಮೂರ್ಮಿಕಲಿಲಾವರ್ತಾಮನ್ವವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಹಾರಥಃ.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ಸೂತಮಿಹೈವಾದ್ಯ ವಸಾಮಹೇ৷৷2.50.27৷৷


ಮಹಾರಥಃ great chariot-warrior, ಊರ್ಮಿಕಲಿಲಾವರ್ತಾಮ್ river full of tumultuous waves with whirlpools, ತಾಮ್ that, ಅನ್ವವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ on beholding, ಸೂತಮ್ charioteer, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ Sumantra, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಅತ್ರೈವ here itself, ವಸಾಮಹೇ will spend.

Beholding river Ganga full of waves and whirlpools, the great chariot-warrior (Rama) said to Sumantra: We shall spend the night here.
ಅವಿದೂರಾದಯಂ ನದ್ಯಾ ಬಹುಪುಷ್ಪಪ್ರವಾಲವಾನ್.

ಸುಮಹಾನಿಙ್ಗುದೀವೃಕ್ಷೋ ವಸಾಮೋತ್ರೈವ ಸಾರಥೇ!৷৷2.50.28৷৷


ಸಾರಥೇ! O charioteer, ನದ್ಯಾಃ river's, ಅವಿದೂರಾತ್ not far from, ಬಹುಪುಷ್ಪಪ್ರವಾಲವಾನ್ having many flowers and budding leaves, ಸುಮಹಾನ್ very large, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಇಙ್ಗುದೀವೃಕ್ಷಃ Ingudi tree, ಅತ್ರೈವ here itself, ವಸಾಮಃ shall stay.

O charioteer! there is a very large ingudi (almond) tree not far from the river, luxuriant with flowers and budding leaves. We shall stay there tonight.
ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ ಸ್ಸರಿತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾಂ ಸಮ್ಮಾನ್ಯಸಲಿಲಾಂ ಶಿವಾಮ್.

ದೇವದಾನವಗನ್ಧರ್ವಮೃಗಮಾನುಷಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್৷৷2.50.29৷৷


ದೇವದಾನವಗನ್ಧರ್ವಮೃಗಮಾನುಷಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್ for devas, danavas, gandharvas, beasts, serpents, men and birds, ಶಿವಾಮ್ auspicious one, ಸಮ್ಮಾನ್ಯಸಲಿಲಾಮ್ a river of venerable (holy) waters, ಸರಿತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾಮ್ best among rivers, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ we shall see.

We shall watch Ganga, the best among rivers, whose holy waters are respected by gods, demons, gandharvas, beasts, serpents, men and birds alike.
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಶ್ಚ ಬಾಢಮಿತ್ಯೇವ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತಮಿಙ್ಗುದೀವೃಕ್ಷಂ ತದೋಪಯಯತುರ್ಹಯೈಃ৷৷2.50.30৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ Lakshmana, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಶ್ಚ Sumantra, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಬಾಢಮಿತ್ಯೇವ 'Be it so', ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ saying, ತದಾ then, ಹಯೈಃ with horses, ತಮ್ that, ಇಙ್ಗುದೀವೃಕ್ಷಮ್ ingudi tree, ಉಪಯಯತುಃ both
approached.

Lakshmana and Sumantra agreed with Rama, saying 'Be it so' and turned the horses towards that ingudi tree.
ರಾಮೋಭಿಯಾಯ ತಂ ರಮ್ಯಂ ವೃಕ್ಷಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುನನ್ದನಃ.

ರಥಾದವಾತರತ್ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಸಭಾರ್ಯ ಸ್ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ৷৷2.50.31৷৷


ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುನನ್ದನಃ the delight of the Ikshvakus, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ beautiful, ತಂ ವೃಕ್ಷಮ್ that tree, ಅಭಿಯಾಯ having reached, ಸಭಾರ್ಯಃ with his consort, ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ with Lakshmana, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ from that, ರಥಾತ್ chariot, ಅವಾತರತ್ alighted.

Rama, delight of the Ikshvakus, along with his consort and Lakshmana reached that beautiful tree and alighted from the chariot.
ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋಪ್ಯವತೀರ್ಯಾಸ್ಮಾನ್ಮೋಚಯಿತ್ವಾ ಹಯೋತ್ತಮಾನ್.

ವೃಕ್ಷಮೂಲಗತಂ ರಾಮಮುಪತಸ್ಥೇ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.50.32৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋಪಿ Sumantra also, ಅಸ್ಮಾತ್ from that chariot, ಅವತೀರ್ಯ having alighted, ಹಯೋತ್ತಮಾನ್ the best of horses, ಮೋಚಯಿತ್ವಾ having unyoked, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ವೃಕ್ಷಮೂಲಗತಮ್ sitting
at the foot of the tree, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಉಪತಸ್ಥೇ stood near.

Sumantra also got off the chariot, unyoked the horses and with folded palms stood near Rama who had already reached the foot of the tree.
ತತ್ರ ರಾಜಾ ಗುಹೋ ನಾಮ ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾತ್ಮಸಮಸ್ಸಖಾ.

ನಿಷಾದಜಾತ್ಯೋ ಬಲವಾನ್ ಸ್ಥಪತಿಶ್ಚೇತಿ ವಿಶ್ರುತಃ৷৷2.50.33৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ to Rama, ಆತ್ಮಸಮಃ like his own self, ಸಖಾ friend, ನಿಷಾದಜಾತ್ಯಃ hunter by race, ಬಲವಾನ್ powerful, ಸ್ಥಪತಿಶ್ಚೇತಿ lord of nishada tribe, ವಿಶ್ರುತಃ well-known, ಗುಹೋ ನಾಮ Guha by name, ರಾಜಾ king.

There lived the mighty king Guha who was born in the race of nishadas (hunters) and became famous as their lord. He was a friend to Rama who was like his own self.
ಸ ಶೃತ್ವಾ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ರಾಮಂ ವಿಷಯಮಾಗತಮ್.

ವೃದ್ಧೈಃ ಪರಿವೃತೋಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ ಜ್ಞಾತಿಭಿಶ್ಚಾಭ್ಯುಪಾಗತಃ৷৷2.50.34৷৷


ಸಃ he, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ (best) among men, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ವಿಷಯಮ್ to his region, ಆಗತಮ್ having arrived, ಶೃತ್ವಾ having heard, ವೃಧ್ದೈ: by the aged, ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ by the ministers, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಭಿಶ್ಚ by the people of his clan, ಪರಿವೃತಃ surrounded by, ಅಭ್ಯುಪಾಗತಃ approached him.

Having come to know that Rama, the best among men, had arrived in his region Guha accompanied by senior ministers and people of his clan came to greet him.
ತತೋ ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ದೂರಾದುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್.

ಸಹ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಣಾ ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸಮಾಗಚ್ಛದ್ಗುಹೇನ ಸಃ৷৷2.50.35৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ approaching, ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಂ king of the nishadas, ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಣಾ ಸಹ along with Lakshmana, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಗುಹೇನ with Guha, ಸಮಾಗಚ್ಛತ್ went forward.

When Rama and Lakshmana saw from a distance that Guha, king of the nishadas, was approaching them, they went forward to receive him.
ತಮಾರ್ತಸ್ಸಮ್ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ಗುಹೋ ರಾಘವಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಯಥಾಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ತಥೇಯಂ ತೇ ರಾಮ ಕಿಂ ಕರವಾಣಿ ತೇ৷৷2.50.36৷৷

ಈದೃಶಂ ಹಿ ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ ಕಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಸ್ಯತ್ಯತಿಥಿಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.


ಆರ್ತಃ in anguish, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ತಂ ರಾಘವಮ್ to Rama, ಸಮ್ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ having embraced, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ರಾಮ O Rama, ತೇ to you, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ Ayodhya, ಯಥಾ as how, ಇಯಮ್ this city, ತಥಾ like that, ತೇ to you, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಕರವಾಣಿ shall I do?, ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ O mighty-armed one, ಈದೃಶಮ್ such, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved, ಅತಿಥಿಮ್ guest, ಕಃ who, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಸ್ಯತಿ will get.

Overwhelmed with grief (to see Rama in bark), Guha embraced Rama and said This is just like Ayodhya to you. What can I do for you? O mighty-armed Rama, who can have the good fortune of receiving such a beloved guest like you?
ತತೋ ಗುಣವದನ್ನಾದ್ಯಮುಪಾದಾಯ ಪೃಥಗ್ವಿಧಮ್৷৷2.50.37৷৷

ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಚೋಪಾನಯತ್ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಚೇದಮುವಾಚ ಹ.


ತತಃ thereafter, ಪೃಥಗ್ವಿಧಮ್ various kinds of, ಗುಣವತ್ of good quality, ಅನ್ನಾದ್ಯಮ್ rice and other eatables, ಉಪಾದಾಯ having brought, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಚ drinks also, ಉಪಾನಯತ್ he brought, ಇದಮ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಚ these words, ಉವಾಚ ಹ also spoke.

Thereafter he quickly brought rice and various kinds of tasty food and drink as welcome offerings and said to him:
ಸ್ವಾಗತಂ ತೇ ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ! ತವೇಯಮಖಿಲಾ ಮಹೀ৷৷2.50.38৷৷

ವಯಂ ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಾ ಭವಾನ್ಭರ್ತಾ ಸಾಧು ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಶಾಧಿ ನಃ.


ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ O mighty-armed one, ತೇ to you, ಸ್ವಾಗತಮ್ welcome, ಅಖಿಲಾ entire, ಇಯಂ ಮಹೀ this land, ತವ is yours, ವಯಮ್ we, ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಾಃ are attendants, ಭವಾನ್ you, ಭರ್ತಾ master, ನಃ for us, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ this
kingdom, ಸಾಧು worthy of, ಪ್ರಶಾಧಿ rule.

O mighty-armed prince, welcome to you! This entire land belongs to you. You are our master and we, your servants. Rule this kingdom happily.
ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಂ ಭೋಜ್ಯಂ ಚ ಪೇಯಂ ಚ ಲೇಹ್ಯಂಚೇದಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್৷৷2.50.39৷৷

ಶಯನಾನಿ ಚ ಮುಖ್ಯಾನಿ ವಾಜಿನಾಂ ಖಾದನಂ ಚ ತೇ.


ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಮ್ food to be eaten by biting, ಭೋಜ್ಯಮ್ food to be eaten by chewing, ಪೇಯಮ್ food fit for drinking, ಲೇಹ್ಯಂ ಚ food fit for licking, ಮುಖ್ಯಾನಿ excellent, ಶಯನಾನಿ beds, ತೇ for you, ವಾಜಿನಾಮ್ for horses, ಖಾದನಂ ಚ also fodder, ಇದಮ್ here, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ awaits.

All kinds of food to be taken by biting, chewing, drinking and licking are here for you. There is an excellent bed ready. There are also enough fodder for the horses.
ಏವಂ ಬ್ರುವಾಣಂ ತು ಗುಹಂ ರಾಘವಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ৷৷2.50.40৷৷

ಅರ್ಚಿತಾಶ್ಚೈವ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಶ್ಚ ಭವತಾ ಸರ್ವಥಾ ವಯಮ್.

ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮಭಿಗಮಾಚ್ಚೈವ ಸ್ನೇಹಸನ್ದರ್ಶನೇನ ಚ৷৷2.50.41৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಬ್ರುವಾಣಮ್ speaking, ಗುಹಮ್ to Guha, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ replied, ವಯಮ್ we, ಸರ್ವಥಾ in every way, ಭವತಾ by you, ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ on foot, ಅಭಿಗಮಾಚ್ಚೈವ coming to meet us, ಸ್ನೇಹಸನ್ದರ್ಶನನೇ ಚ showing your friendliness, ಅರ್ಚಿತಾಶ್ಚೈವ we have been worshipped, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಶ್ಚ also pleased.

Hearing (the words of) Guha, Rama replied By coming on foot to meet us and by displaying your friendliness, you have amply honoured us and pleased us.
ಭುಜಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಸಾಧು ಪೀನಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಪೀಡಯನ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷

ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ತ್ವಾಂ ಗುಹ! ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹ್ಯರೋಗಂ ಸಹ ಬಾನ್ಧವೈಃ.

ಅಪಿ ತೇ ಕುಶಲಂ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೇ ಮಿತ್ರೇಷು ಚ ಧನೇಷು ಚ৷৷2.50.42৷৷


ಪೀನಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ strong, ಭುಜಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with his arms, ಸಾಧು tightly, ಪೀಡಯನ್ pressing together, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಗುಹ O Guha, ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ luckily, ಸಹ ಬಾನ್ಧವೈ: with all relations, ಅರೋಗಮ್ hale and hearty, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ am seeing, ತೇ your, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೇ kingdom, ಮಿತ್ರೇಷು in friends, ಧನೇಷು ಚ wealth also, ಅಪಿ ಕುಶಲಮ್ (hope) all is well.

Rama embracing him tightly with his strong arms said, O Guha! it is fortunate that I am able to see you and your relations in good health. Hope, all is well with your friends, kingdom and (collection of) revenue.
ಯತ್ತ್ವಿದಂ ಭವತಾ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ ಸಮುಪಕಲ್ಪಿತಮ್.

ಸರ್ವಂ ತದನುಜಾನಾಮಿ ನ ಹಿ ವರ್ತೇ ಪ್ರತಿಗ್ರಹೇ৷৷2.50.43৷৷


ಭವತಾ by you, ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ with affection, ಇದಮ್ now, ಯತ್ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ whatever, ಸಮುಕಲ್ಪಿತಮ್ has been arranged, ತತ್ ಸರ್ವಮ್ all that, ಅನುಜಾನಾಮಿ I am accepting (giving you back), ಪ್ರತಿಗ್ರಹೇ in acceptance, ನ ವರ್ತೇ ಹಿ unable.

I must give you back whatever you have offered me so affectionately. I am not in a position to accept anything.
ಕುಶಚೀರಾಜಿನಧರಂ ಫಲಮೂಲಾಶಿನಂ ಚ ಮಾಮ್.

ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಪ್ರಣಿಹಿತಂ ಧರ್ಮೇ ತಾಪಸಂ ವನಗೋಚರಮ್৷৷2.50.44৷৷


ಮಾಮ್ me, ಕುಶಚೀರಾಜಿನಧರಮ್ wearing garments made of bark, kusa grass and antelope skin, ಫಲಮೂಲಾಶಿನಮ್ susbsisting on fruits and roots, ಧರ್ಮೇ in righteousness, ಪ್ರಣಿಹಿತಮ್ initiated, ವನಗೋಚರಮ್ wandering in the forest, ತಾಪಸಮ್ like an ascetic, ವಿದ್ಧಿ you may know.

You must know me as an ascetic devoted to righeousness,and as a wanderer in the forest wearing garments made of bark, kusa grass and antelope skin, subsisting on fruits and roots.
ಅಶ್ವಾನಾಂ ಖಾದನೇನಾಹಮರ್ಥೀ ನಾನ್ಯೇನ ಕೇನಚಿತ್.

ಏತಾವತಾತ್ರ ಭವತಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸುಪೂಜಿತಃ৷৷2.50.45৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಶ್ವಾನಾಮ್ for horses, ಖಾದನೇನ with fodder, ಅರ್ಥೀ I am a seeker, ಅನ್ಯೇನ by other thing, ಕೇನಚಿತ್ with any one, ನ not, ಅತ್ರ here, ಏತಾವತಾ to this extent, ಭವತಾ by you, ಸುಪೂಜಿತಃ well-honoured, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall become.

What I now need is fodder for the horses. Nothing more. If you can do this much, I'll deem it a great honour.
ಏತೇ ಹಿ ದಯಿತಾ ರಾಜ್ಞಃ ಪಿತುರ್ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ ಮೇ.

ಏತೈಸ್ಸುವಿಹಿತೈರಶ್ವೈ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮ್ಯಹಮರ್ಚಿತಃ৷৷2.50.46৷৷


ಏತೇ these horses, ಮೇ ಪಿತುಃ my father's, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king Dasaratha's, ದಯಿತಾಃ liked, ಸುವಿಹಿತೈಃ well-tended, ಏತೈಃ by these, ಅಶ್ವೈಃ with horses, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅರ್ಚಿತಃ worshipped, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall become.

If these horses which are the favourites of my father, king Dasaratha are well-fed, I shall consider myself honoured.
ಅಶ್ವಾನಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾನಂ ಚ ಖಾದನಂ ಚೈವ ಸೋನ್ವಶಾತ್.

ತತಃ then, ಚೀರೋತ್ತರಾಸಙ್ಗ: upper robe, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಂ ಸನ್ಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Sandhya, ಅನ್ವಾಸ್ಯ offering oblations,
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ by Lakshmana, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಆಹೃತಮ್ which has been brought, ಜಲಮೇವ water only, ಭೋಜ್ಯಮ್ as food, ಆದದೇ partook.

Rama wearing the upper garment then offered oblations to Sandhya and partook of only water as refreshment, brought by Lakshmana.
ತಸ್ಯ ಭೂಮೌ ಶಯಾನಸ್ಯ ಪಾದೌ ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲ್ಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ.

ಸಭಾರ್ಯಸ್ಯ ತತೋಭ್ಯೇತ್ಯ ತಸ್ಥೌ ವೃಕ್ಷಮುಪಾಶ್ರಿತಃ৷৷2.50.49৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಶಯಾನಸ್ಯ for sleeping, ಸಭಾರ್ಯಸ್ಯ with his consort, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲ್ಯ having washed, ತತಃ then, ಅಭ್ಯೇತ್ಯ having gone towards, ವೃಕ್ಷಮ್ tree, ಉಪಾಶ್ರಿತಃ took refuge, ತಸ್ಥೌ he stood.

Lakshmana washed the feet of Rama who along with his consort lay upon the ground, and returned to take rest under the tree.
ಗುಹೋಪಿ ಸಹ ಸೂತೇನ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮನುಭಾಷಯನ್.

ಅನ್ವಜಾಗ್ರತ್ತತೋ ರಾಮಮಪ್ರಮತ್ತೋ ಧನುರ್ಧರಃ৷৷2.50.50৷৷


ಗುಹೋಪಿ Guha also, ಸೂತೇನ ಸಹ along with the charioteer, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಅನುಭಾಷಯನ್ while talking, ತತಃ then, ಧನುರ್ಧರಃ bow in hand, ಅಪ್ರಮತ್ತಃ by being vigilant, ರಾಮಮ್ about Rama, ಅನ್ವಜಾಗ್ರತ್ kept awake.

Guha, bow in hand, conversing with Sumantra and Soumitri (Son of Sumitra, Lakshmana) then kept vigil over Rama by remaining awake (all night).
ತಥಾ ಶಯಾನಸ್ಯ ತತೋಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತೋ

ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೋ ದಾಶರಥೇರ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಅದೃಷ್ಟದುಃಖಸ್ಯ ಸುಖೋಚಿತಸ್ಯ ಸಾ

ತದಾವ್ಯತೀಯಾಯ ಚಿರೇಣ ಶರ್ವರೀ৷৷2.50.51৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಅದೃಷ್ಟದುಃಖಸ್ಯ one who never experienced troubles, ಸುಖೋಚಿತಸ್ಯ used to comforts, ಧೀಮತಃ sagacious, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಃ illustrious, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ magnanimous, ತದಾ then, ತಥಾ like that, ಶಯಾನಸ್ಯ lying down, ಅಸ್ಯ ದಾಶರಥೇಃ for this son of Dasaratha (Rama), ಸಾ that, ಶರ್ವರೀ night, ಚಿರೇಣ as of long duration, ವ್ಯತೀಯಾಯ passed.

As the wise, illustrious, magnanimous son of Dasaratha (Rama) who was used to pleasures and not discomfort lay on the ground, the long night slipped away.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಪಞ್ಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
