[Rama, Sita and Lakshmana depart for Dandaka forest --- reach the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja --- seek advice for a dwelling --- place --- Bharadwaja suggests Chitrakuta at the confluence of rivers Ganga and Yamuna --- they set out after a night's stay.]

ತೇ ತು ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಮಹಾವೃಕ್ಷೇ ಉಷಿತ್ವಾ ರಜನೀಂ ಶಿವಾಮ್.

ವಿಮಲೇಭ್ಯುದಿತೇ ಸೂರ್ಯೇ ತಸ್ಮಾದ್ದೇಶಾತ್ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥಿರೇ৷৷2.54.1৷৷


ತೇ they (Rama, Sita and Lakshmana), ಶಿವಾಮ್ auspicious, ರಜನೀಮ್ night, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that, ಮಹಾವೃಕ್ಷೇ big tree, ಉಷಿತ್ವಾ having remained, ವಿಮಲೇ when the bright, ಸೂರ್ಯೇ Sun, ಅಭ್ಯುದಿತೇ had risen, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ದೇಶಾತ್ from that region, ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥಿರೇ set out.

They (Rama, Sita and Lakshmana) spent that auspicious night under that great tree and set out from there after the bright sun rose.
ಯತ್ರ ಭಾಗೀರಥೀಂ ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ಯಮುನಾಭಿಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ.

ಜಗ್ಮುಸ್ತಂ ದೇಶಮುದ್ದಿಶ್ಯ ವಿಗಾಹ್ಯ ಸುಮಹದ್ವನಮ್৷৷2.54.2৷৷

ಯಶಶ್ವಿನಃ illustrious, ತೇ they, ಸುಮಹತ್ very great, ವನಮ್ forest, ವಿಗಾಹ್ಯ having entered, ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ different, ಭೂಮಿಭಾಗಾನ್ regions of the land, ಅದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಾನ್ hitherto-unseen, ಮನೋರಮಾನ್ enchanting, ದೇಶಾಂಶ್ಚಾಪಿ regions also, ತತ್ರ ತತ್ರ here and there, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಃ viewing, ಯಮುನಾ Yamuna, ಯತ್ರ where, ಭಾಗೀರಥೀಮ್ Bhagirathi, ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ Ganga's, ಅಭಿಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ flows into, ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ that place, ಉದ್ದಿಶ್ಯ intending (to reach), ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went.

Illustrious Rama, Sita and Lakshmana entered the deep forest and saw the different regions of the land and other enchanting places which they had never seen before and proceeded towards the region where the river Yamuna merged with Bhagirathi Ganga.
ಯಥಾ ಕ್ಷೇಮೇಣ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ ಸ ಪಶ್ಯಂಶ್ಚ ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ ದ್ರುಮಾನ್.

ನಿವೃತ್ತಮಾತ್ರೇ ದಿವಸೇ ರಾಮಃ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.54.4৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಯಥಾ ಕ್ಷೇಮೇಣ on a safe way, ಗಚ್ಛನ್ going, ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ various, ದ್ರುಮಾನ್ trees, ಪಶ್ಯಂಶ್ಚ looking at, ದಿವಸೇ day, ನಿವೃತ್ತಮಾತ್ರೇ when ended, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Walking on the safe path and observing various kinds of trees Rama said to Lakshmana at the end of the day:
ಪ್ರಯಾಗಮಭಿತಃ ಪಶ್ಯ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ ಧೂಮಮುನ್ನತಮ್.

ಅಗ್ನೇರ್ಭಗವತಃ ಕೇತುಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಸನ್ನಿಹಿತೋ ಮುನಿಃ৷৷2.54.5৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ O son of Sumitra, Lakshmana, ಪ್ರಯಾಗಮ್ ಅಭಿತಃ near Prayaga, ಉನ್ನತಮ್ rising high, ಭಗವತಃ of the venerable, ಅಗ್ನೇಃ fire's, ಕೇತುಮ್ the banner, ಧೂಮಮ್ smoke, ಪಶ್ಯ look, ಮುನಿಃ the sage, ಸನ್ನಿಹಿತಃ close by, ಮನ್ಯೇ I think.

O son of Sumitra, look at the column of smoke rising like the banner of the venerable fire-god near Prayaga. I think an ascetic dwells nearby.
ನೂನಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಃ ಸ್ಮ ಸಮ್ಭೇದಂ ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಮುನಯೋರ್ವಯಮ್.

ತಥಾ ಹಿ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಶಬ್ದೋ ವಾರಿಣೋ ವಾರಿಘಟ್ಟಿತಃ৷৷2.54.6৷৷


ವಯಮ್ we, ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಮುನಯೋಃ Ganga and Yamuna, ಸಮ್ಭೇದಮ್ confluence, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಃ ಸ್ಮ have reached, ನೂನಮ್ it is certain, ತಥಾ ಹಿ as for, ವಾರಿಘಟ್ಟಿತಃ dashed by waters, ವಾರಿಣಃ waters, ಶಬ್ದಃ sound, ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ is heard.

We have surely reached the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna which can be ascertained from the sounds of clashing water.
ದಾರೂಣಿ ಪರಿಭಿನ್ನಾನಿ ವನಜೈರುಪಜೀವಿಭಿಃ.

ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮೇ ಚೈತೇ ದೃಶ್ಯನ್ತೇ ವಿವಿಧಾ ದ್ರುಮಾಃ৷৷2.54.7৷৷


ವನಜೈಃ by the foresters, ಉಪಜೀವಿಭಿಃ those people subsisting on them, ಪರಿಭಿನ್ನಾನಿ are broken, ದಾರೂಣಿ logs of wood, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮೇ in the hermitage of Bharadwaja, ಏತೇ all these, ವಿವಿಧಾಃ different, ದ್ರುಮಾಶ್ಚ trees also, ದೃಶ್ಯನ್ತೇ are seen.

Here are logs of wood cut into pieces by forest-dwellers, living on forest products. You can see various trees near the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja.
ಧನ್ವಿನೌ ತೌ ಸುಖಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಲಮ್ಬಮಾನೇ ದಿವಾಕರೇ.

ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಮುನಯೋಸ್ಸನ್ಧೌ ಪ್ರಾಪತುರ್ನಿಲಯಂ ಮುನೇಃ৷৷2.54.8৷৷


ಧನ್ವಿನೌ the two archers, ತೌ those two, ಸುಖಮ್ comfortably, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ದಿವಾಕರೇ Sun, ಲಮ್ಬಮಾನೇ was hanging, ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಮುನಯೋಃ of Ganga and yamuna, ಸನ್ಧೌ at the confluence, ಮುನೇಃ of sage Bharadwaja, ನಿಲಯಮ್ hermitage, ಪ್ರಾಪತುಃ arrived.

The two archers (Rama and Lakshmana) reached comfortably (walking at an easy pace) by evening the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja near the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna.
ರಾಮಸ್ತ್ವಾಶ್ರಮಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತ್ರಾಸಯನ್ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಃ.

ಗತ್ವಾ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಧ್ವಾನಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮುಪಾಗಮತ್৷৷2.54.9৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having approached, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಃ animals and birds, ತ್ರಾಸಯನ್ frightening, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ for a moment, ಅಧ್ವಾನಮ್ on the path, ಗತ್ವಾ proceeding, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ Bharadhwaja, ಉಪಾಗಮತ್ reached.

Seeing Rama approaching the hermitage the deer and the birds were frightened. Proceeding on the path, for a while Rama reached (the place of) Bharadwaja.
ತತಸ್ತ್ವಾಶ್ರಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಮುನೇರ್ದರ್ಶನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣೌ.

ಸೀತಯಾನುಗತೌ ವೀರೌ ದೂರಾದೇವಾವತಸ್ಥತುಃ৷৷2.54.10৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಸೀತಯಾ by Sita, ಅನುಗತೌ followed, ವೀರೌ those two heroes, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಮುನೇಃ ascetic's, ದರ್ಶನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣೌ wishing to see, ದೂರಾದೇವ at a distance, ಅವತಸ್ಥತುಃ stood.

Thereafter the two heroes followed by Sita arrived at the hermitage and, wishing to see the sage, waited at a distance.
ಸ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮೃಷಿಂ ಶಿಷ್ಯಗಣೈರ್ವೃತಮ್.

ಸಂಶಿತವ್ರತಮೇಕಾಗ್ರಂ ತಪಸಾ ಲಬ್ಧಚಕ್ಷುಷಮ್৷৷2.54.11৷৷

ಹುತಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಂ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ.

ರಾಮಃ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಣಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ಸೀತಯಾ ಚಾಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್৷৷2.54.12৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ಸಂಶಿತವ್ರತಮ್ one practising rigorous austerities, ಏಕಾಗ್ರಮ್ with concentration of mind, ತಪಸಾ with asceticism, ಲಬ್ದಚಕ್ಷುಷಮ್ one who has obtained spiritual insight, ಹುತಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಮ್ one who has kindled fire in sacrificial rituals, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಮ್ distinguished, ಶಿಷ್ಯಗಣೈಃ with disciples, ವೃತಮ್ surrounded by, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ high-souled, ಋಷಿಮ್ sage, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ having seen, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಣಾ Lakshmana, ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ along with, ಸೀತಯಾ ಚ Sita too, ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್ paid obeisance.

Rama entered the hermitage and saw that high-souled Bharadwaja surrounded by his disciples. He was a distinguished sage who (himself) kindled sacrficial fires and acquired spiritual insight by practising rigid austerities with concentration of mind and ascetic powers. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita paid their obeisance to that great sage.
ನ್ಯವೇದಯತ ಚಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ತಸ್ಮೈ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಪೂರ್ವಜಃ.

ಪುತ್ರೌ ದಶರಥಸ್ಯಾವಾಂ ಭಗವನ್ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ৷৷2.54.13৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಪೂರ್ವಜಃ Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama), ತಸ್ಮೈ to that sage, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ himself, ನ್ಯವೇದಯತ introduced, ಭಗವನ್ O venerable one, ಅವಾಮ್ both of us, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ಪುತ್ರೌ sons, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ Rama and Lakshmana.

Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama) introduced himself (to Bharadwaja), O venerable one, we are both sons of Dasaratha, Rama and Lakshmana.
ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಮಮೇಯಂ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ.

ಮಾಂ ಚಾನುಯಾತಾ ವಿಜನಂ ತಪೋವನಮನಿನ್ದಿತಾ৷৷2.54.14৷৷


ಇಯಮ್ this, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀ auspicious one, ಮಮ my, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ consort, ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ daughter of Janaka, ವೈದೇಹೀ Vaidehi (Sita), ಅನಿನ್ದಿತಾ irreproachable, ಮಾಮ್ me, ವಿಜನಮ್ desolate, ತಪೋವನಮ್ penace-grove, ಅನುಯಾತಾ has followed.

This blessed one is my consort, Sita, daughter of Janaka. Irreproachable she has followed me to the desolate grove of penance (hermitage).
ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜ್ಯಮಾನಂ ಮಾಂ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರನುಜ ಪ್ರಿಯಃ.

ಅಯಮನ್ವಗಮದ್ಭ್ರಾತಾ ವನಮೇವ ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ৷৷2.54.15৷৷


ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ of firm resolve, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಅನುಜಃ younger, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ dear, ಅಯಂ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಃ this son of Sumitra, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜ್ಯಮಾನಮ್ being sent on exile, ಮಾಮ್ me, ವನಮೇವ to the forest, ಅನ್ವಗಮತ್ followed.

This is the son of Sumitra, my beloved younger brother, a man of firm resolve. He has accompanied me when I was sent on exile to the forest by my father.
ಪಿತ್ರಾ ನಿಯುಕ್ತಾ ಭಗವನ್ ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಸ್ತಪೋವನಮ್.

ಧರ್ಮಮೇವ ಚರಿಷ್ಯಾಮ ಸ್ತತ್ರ ಮೂಲಫಲಾಶನಾಃ৷৷2.54.16৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O venerable one, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ನಿಯುಕ್ತಾಃ ordered by, ತಪೋವನಮ್ penance-grove ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ we will enter, ತತ್ರ there, ಮೂಲಫಲಾಶನಾಃ subsisting on roots and fruits, ಧರ್ಮಮೇವ following righteous ways, ಚರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಃ will practise.

O venerable one! on my father's command we entered the desolate forest of penance. Subsisting on roots and fruits, I shall practise the righteous way of life.
ತಸ್ಯ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ.

ಉಪಾನಯತ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಗಾಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮುದಕಂ ತತಃ৷৷2.54.17৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ sage Bharadwaja, ಧೀಮತಃ of the sagacious, ತಸ್ಯ that, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ prince's, ತತ್ ವಚನಮ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ತತಃ then, ಗಾಮ್ bull, ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಮ್ for arghya, ಉದಕಮ್ water, ಉಪಾನಯತ brought.

Sage Bharadwaja heard the words of sagacious Rama and offered a bull, water (for washing feet) and arghya (offering to a guest).
ನಾನಾವಿಧಾನನ್ನರಸಾನ್ ವನ್ಯಮೂಲಫಲಾಶ್ರಯಾನ್.

ತೇಭ್ಯೋ ದದೌ ತಪ್ತತಪಾ ವಾಸಂ ಚೈವಾಭ್ಯಕಲ್ಪಯತ್৷৷2.54.18৷৷


ತಪ್ತತಪಾಃ one who practised severe penance, ನಾನಾವಿಧಾನ್ different kinds of, ವನ್ಯಮೂಲಫಲಾಶ್ರಯಾನ್ made from the fruits and roots, ಅನ್ನರಸಾನ್ food and drink, ತೇಭ್ಯಃ for them, ದದೌ gave, ವಾಸಂ ಚೈವ resting-place also, ಅಕಲ್ಪಯತ್ arranged.

The ascetic who practised severe penance offered them different kinds of food and drink made from roots and fruits available in the forest. He also provided them a place to rest in.
ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಭಿರಾಸೀನೋ ಮುನಿಭಿಶ್ಚ ಸಮನ್ತತಃ.

ರಾಮಮಾಗತಮಭ್ಯರ್ಚ್ಯ ಸ್ವಾಗತೇನಾಹತಂ ಮುನಿಃ৷৷2.54.19৷৷


ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ by animals and birds, ಮುನಿಭಿಶ್ಚ by hermits also, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ surrounded, ಆಸೀನಃ seated, ಮುನಿಃ sage (Bharadwaja), ಆಗತಮ್ arrived, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ to that Rama, ಸ್ವಾಗತೇನ with welcome, ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಚ್ಯ having paid homage, ಆಹ uttered.

There the sage sat, surrounded by hermits, animals and birds after having welcomed Rama with due honour.
ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ಚ ತಾಮರ್ಚಾಮುಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ಸ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಧರ್ಮಯುಕ್ತಮಿದಂ ತದಾ৷৷2.54.20৷৷


ಸಃ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ that Bharadwaja, ತದಾ then, ತಾಮ್ that, ಅರ್ಚಾಮ್ hospitality, ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ having received, ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟಮ್ seated in front, ರಾಘವಮ್ to Rama, ಧರ್ಮಯುಕ್ತಮ್ in conformity with righteousness, ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Rama accepted the hospitality of Bharadwaja and took a seat in front of the sage, who spoke to him these words in conformity with righteousness:
ಚಿರಸ್ಯ ಖಲು ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ! ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ತ್ವಾಮಿಹಾಗತಮ್.

ಶ್ರುತಂ ತವ ಮಯಾ ಚೇದಂ ವಿವಾಸನಮಕಾರಣಮ್৷৷2.54.21৷৷


ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ O descendant of the Kakutstha dynasty, ಚಿರಸ್ಯ after a long time, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಮ್ arrived here, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಖಲು I see indeed, ಅಕಾರಣಮ್ without any reason, ತವ your, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಿವಾಸನಮ್ banishment, ಮಯಾ by me, ಶ್ರುತಂ ಚ is heard too.

O descendant of the Kakutstha dynasty, I am able to see you on your arrival here after a long time. I have also heard about your unwarranted banishment.
ಅವಕಾಶೋ ವಿವಿಕ್ತೋಯಂ ಮಹಾನದ್ಯೋಸ್ಸಮಾಗಮೇ.

ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಚ ರಮಣೀಯಶ್ಚ ವಸತ್ವಿಹ ಭವಾನ್ ಸುಖಮ್৷৷2.54.22৷৷


ಮಹಾನದ್ಯೋಃ of two great rivers, ಸಮಾಗಮೇ at the confluence, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಅವಕಾಶಃ region, ವಿವಿಕ್ತಃ solitary, ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಚ is also sacred, ರಮಣೀಯಶ್ಚ pleasant, ಭವಾನ್ you, ಇಹ here, ಸುಖಮ್ comfortably, ವಸತು can dwell.

This sacred and solitary region near the confluence of two great rivers (Ganga and Yamuna) is a pleasant place. You may stay here comfortably.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೇನ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಶುಭಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ರಾಮಃ ಸರ್ವಹಿತೇ ರತಃ৷৷2.54.23৷৷


ಸರ್ವಹಿತೇ for the well-being of all, ರತಃ devoted, ರಾಘವಃ born in the dynasty of Raghu, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಭರದ್ವಾಜೇನ by Bharadwaja, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಉಕ್ತಃ having been addressed, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ spoke in reply.

Rama, ever devoted to the well-being of every one, heard Bharadwaja and replied to him with these auspicious words:
ಭಗವನ್ನಿತ ಆಸನ್ನಃ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೋ ಜನಃ.

ಸುದರ್ಶಮಿಹ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮನ್ಯೇಹಮಿಮಮಾಶ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.54.24৷৷

ಆಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ ವೈದೇಹೀಂ ಮಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕೋ ಜನಃ.

ಅನೇನ ಕಾರಣೇನಾಹಮಿಹ ವಾಸಂ ನ ರೋಚಯೇ৷৷2.54.25৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O venerable one, ಇತಃ from here, ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಃ inhabiting towns and villages, ಜನಃ subjects, ಆಸನ್ನಃ living closely, ಇಹ here, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಸುದರ್ಶಮ್ easily to be seen, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಜನಃ people, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ Sita, ಮಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ me too, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕಃ in order to see, ಇಮಮ್ ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ to this hermitage, ಆಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ will frequent, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮನ್ಯೇ think so, ಅನೇನ ಕಾರಣೇನ for this reason, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಇಹ here, ವಾಸಮ್ to reside, ನ ರೋಚಯೇ do not desire.

O venerable sage, I feel the people living in nearby villages and towns, perceiving that we can be easily seen here, will frequent this ashram. This is the reason I don't wish to stay here.
ಏಕಾನ್ತೇ ಪಶ್ಯ ಭಗವನ್ನಾಶ್ರಮಸ್ಥಾನಮುತ್ತಮಮ್.

ರಮೇತ ಯತ್ರ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಸುಖಾರ್ಹಾ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ৷৷2.54.26৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ revered one, ಸುಖಾರ್ಹಾ deserves comfort, ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ Janaka's daughter, ವೈದೇಹೀ Vaidehi, ಯತ್ರ where, ರಮೇತ may enjoy, ಏಕಾನ್ತೇ in a solitary, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ agreeable, ಆಶ್ರಮಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ hermitage, ಪಶ್ಯ see.

O revered one, Janaka's daughter (Sita) deserves comfort. Suggest a solitary and agreeable place for our hermitage where she can enjoy herself.
ಏತಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಶುಭಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ.

ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ತತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮರ್ಥಗ್ರಾಹಕಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.54.27৷৷


ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ great sage, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಏತತ್ these, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ತತಃ after that, ಅರ್ಥಗ್ರಾಹಕಮ್ conveying the meaning, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

On hearing the auspicious words of Rama conveying his intention, the great sage Bharadwaja replied to him thus:
ದಶಕ್ರೋಶ ಇತಸ್ತಾತ ಗಿರಿರ್ಯತ್ರನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ.

ಮಹರ್ಷಿಸೇವಿತಃ ಪುಣ್ಯಃ ಸರ್ವತಃ ಸುಖದರ್ಶನಃ৷৷2.54.28৷৷

ಗೋಲಾಙ್ಗೂಲಾನುಚರಿತೋ ವಾನರರ್ಕ್ಷನಿಷೇವಿತಃ.

ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತೋ ಗನ್ಧಮಾದನಸನ್ನಿಭಃ৷৷2.54.29৷৷


ತಾತ O dear, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಸೇವಿತಃ inhabited by sages, ಪುಣ್ಯಃ sacred, ಸರ್ವತಃ from all sides, ಸುಖದರ್ಶನಃ whose sight causes delight, ಗೋಲಾಙ್ಗೂಲಾನುಚರಿತಃ full of wandering apes, ವಾನರರ್ಕ್ಷನಿಷೇವಿತಃ inhabited by monkeys and bears, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಃ ಇತಿ by name Chitrakuta, ಖ್ಯಾತಃ well-known, ಗನ್ಧಮಾದನಸನ್ನಿಭಃ like 'Gandhamadana' mountain, ಗಿರಿಃ mountain, ಇತಃ from here, ದಶಕ್ರೋಶೇ at a distance of ten krosas, ಯತ್ರ there, ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ you can live.

O my son! ten krosas (about twenty miles) from here is a mountain well-known as Chitrakuta, resembling 'Gandhamadana'. That mountain frequented by maharshis is sacred. It looks pleasant from all sides. Monkeys, apes and bears wander there and it is an appropriate place for you to live in.
ಯಾವತಾ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ನರಶೃಙ್ಗಾನ್ಯವೇಕ್ಷತೇ.

ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾನಿ ಸಮಾಧತ್ತೇ ನ ಪಾಪೇ ಕುರುತೇ ಮನಃ৷৷2.54.30৷৷


ನರಃ a man, ಯಾವತಾ as long as, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ Chitrakuta mountain's, ಶೃಙ್ಗಾನಿ peaks, ಆವೇಕ್ಷತೇ beholds, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾನಿ auspicious deeds, ಸಮಾಧತ್ತೇ will perform, ಪಾಪೇ in sinful thoughts, ಮನಃ the mind, ನ ಕುರುತೇ will not employ.

As long as one beholds the peaks of mount Chitrakuta, he will be inspired to do good deeds and will not employ his mind in sinful thoughts.
ಋಷಯಸ್ತತ್ರ ಬಹವೋ ವಿಹೃತ್ಯ ಶರದಾಂ ಶತಮ್.

ತಪಸಾ ದಿವಮಾರೂಢಾಃ ಕಪಾಲಶಿರಸಾ ಸಹ৷৷2.54.31৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಬಹವಃ many, ಋಷಯಃ ascetics, ಶರದಾಂ ಶತಮ್ for hundreds of years, ತಪಸಾ with austerities, ವಿಹೃತ್ಯ having roamed about, ಕಪಾಲಶಿರಸಾ ಸಹ with the skulls on their heads, ದಿವಮ್ heaven, ಆರೂಢಾಃ have ascended.

On the Chitrakuta mountain many ascetics wandered about (lived) for hundreds of years carrying on penance. In the process they became so much emaciated that they looked as if they were left (only) with the skulls on their heads. (In the end) they ascended heaven.
ಪ್ರವಿವಿಕ್ತಮಹಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ತಂ ವಾಸಂ ಭವತಸ್ಸುಖಮ್.

ಇಹ ವಾ ವನವಾಸಾಯ ವಸ ರಾಮ ಮಯಾ ಸಹ৷৷2.54.32৷৷


ರಾಮ Rama, ಪ್ರವಿವಿಕ್ತಮ್ solitary, ತಂ ವಾಸಮ್ that abode, ಭವತಃ for your, ಸುಖಮ್ happiness, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮನ್ಯೇ think, ಮಯಾ ಸಹ with me, ಇಹ ವಾ or here, ವನವಾಸಾಯ for the period of banishment, ವಸ you may live.

O Rama, I think you will enjoy your stay there in a solitary place. Or else, you may live with me here during the period of banishment.
ಸ ರಾಮಂ ಸರ್ವಕಾಮೈಸ್ತಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾತಿಥಿಮ್.

ಸಭಾರ್ಯಂ ಸಹ ಚ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್৷৷2.54.33৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ one who knows his duty, ಸಃ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ that Bharadwaja, ಸಭಾರ್ಯಮ್ with his consort, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ with brother, ಚ and, ಪ್ರಿಯಾತಿಥಿಮ್ beloved guest, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ಸರ್ವಕಾಮೈಃ with all desires, ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ honoured.

Bharadwaja, who knows his duty honoured Rama, his beloved guest with his consort and brother by extending all kinds of hospitality.
ತಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಯಾಗೇ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ತಂ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಮುಪೇಯುಷಃ.

ಪ್ರಪನ್ನಾ ರಜನೀ ಪುಣ್ಯಾಃ ಚಿತ್ರಾಃ ಕಥಯತಃ ಕಥಾಃ৷৷2.54.34৷৷


ಪ್ರಯಾಗೇ at Prayaga, ತಂ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಮ್ that great sage, ಉಪೇಯುಷಃ sitting near, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of Rama, ಚಿತ್ರಾಃ interesting, ಕಥಾಃ tales, ಕಥಯತಃ while conversing, ಪುಣ್ಯಾ that holy, ರಜನೀ night, ಪ್ರಪನ್ನಾ had set in.

At Prayaga, while the great sage Bharadwaja was narrating to Rama sitting near him several interesting anecdotes, the holy night set in.
ಸೀತಾತೃತೀಯಃ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಃ ಸುಖೋಚಿತಃ.

ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮೇ ರಮ್ಯೇ ತಾಂ ರಾತ್ರಿಮವಸತ್ಸುಖಮ್৷৷2.54.35৷৷


ಸುಖೋಚಿತಃ used to comforts, ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಃ exhausted, ಸೀತಾಂತೃತೀಯಃ Sita counted as the third, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ: Rama, ರಮ್ಯೇ in the lovely, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮೇ hermitage of Bharadwaja, ತಾಂ ರಾತ್ರಿಮ್ that night, ಸುಖಮ್ happily, ಅವಸತ್ stayed.

The exhausted scion of the Kakutsthas, used to comforts, stayed in the lovely hermitage of Bharadwaja for the night with Sita, as the third member (of the group).
ಪ್ರಭಾತಾಯಾಂ ರಜನ್ಯಾಂ ತು ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮುಪಾಗಮತ್.

ಉವಾಚ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲೋ ಮುನಿಂ ಜ್ವಲಿತತೇಜಸಮ್৷৷2.54.36৷৷


ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲಃ tiger (best) among men, ರಜನ್ಯಾಮ್ after the night, ಪ್ರಭಾತಾಯಾಮ್ at dawn, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ to Bharadwaja, ಉಪಾಗಮತ್ approached, ಜ್ವಲಿತತೇಜಸಮ್ with blazing lustre, ಮುನಿಮ್ the sage, ಉವಾಚ said.

When the night passed into dawn, Rama the best of men approached the resplendent Bharadwaja and said.
ಶರ್ವರೀಂ ಭಗವನ್ನದ್ಯ ಸತ್ಯಶೀಲ ತವಾಶ್ರಮೇ.

ಉಷಿತಾಃ ಸ್ಮೇಹ ವಸತಿಮನುಜಾನಾತು ನೋ ಭವಾನ್৷৷2.54.37৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಶೀಲ O truthful, ಭಗವನ್ O venerable, ಇಹ here, ತವ ಆಶ್ರಮೇ in your hermitage, ಶರ್ವರೀಮ್ the night, ಉಷಿತಾ ಸ್ಮ we have spent, ಅದ್ಯ to day, ನಃ us, ಭವಾನ್ you, ವಸತಿಮ್ dwelling-place, ಅನುಜಾನಾತು permit.

O venerable sage devoted to truth, we have spent the night in your hermitage. Please permit us to depart for the dwelling-place (suggested by you).
ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಾಂ ತು ತಸ್ಯಾಂ ವ್ಯುಷ್ಟಾಯಾಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋಬ್ರವೀದಿದಮ್.

ಮಧುಮೂಲಫಲೋಪೇತಂ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಂ ವ್ರಜೇತಿ ಹ৷৷2.54.38৷৷


ತಸ್ಯಾಮ್ ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಾಮ್ when that night, ವ್ಯುಷ್ಟಾಯಾಮ್ had come to a close, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ಮಧುಮೂಲಫಲೋಪೇತಮ್ abounding in honey, roots, and fruits, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಮ್ to Chitrakuta, ವ್ರಜ go, ಇತಿ thus, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

When the night came to a close, Bharadwaja said (to Rama): You may proceed to Chitrakuta which abounds in roots, fruits and honey.
ವಾಸಮೌಪಯಿಕಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ತವ ರಾಮ ಮಹಾಬಲ!

ನಾನಾನಗಗಣೋಪೇತಃ ಕಿನ್ನರೋರಗಸೇವಿತಃ.

ಮಯೂರನಾದಾಭಿರುತೋ ಗಜರಾಜನಿಷೇವಿತಃ৷৷2.54.39৷৷

ಗಮ್ಯತಾಂ ಭವತಾ ಶೈಲ ಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಃ ಸ ವಿಶ್ರುತಃ.

ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಚ ರಮಣೀಯಶ್ಚ ಬಹುಮೂಲಫಲಾಯುತಃ৷৷2.54.40৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಲ! O mighty one, ರಾಮ Rama, ತವ your, ಔಪಯಿಕಮ್ right, ವಾಸಮ್ place for your stay, ಮನ್ಯೇ I think, ನಾನಾನಗಗಣೋಪೇತಃ full of various types of trees, ಕಿನ್ನರೋರಗಸೇವಿತಃ inhabited by kinneras, serpents, ಮಯೂರನಾದಾಭಿರುತಃ echoing with cries of peacocks, ಗಜರಾಜನಿಷೇವಿತಃ frequented by mighty tuskers, ಪುಣ್ಯಶ್ಚ sacred, ರಮಣೀಯಶ್ಚ delightful, ಬಹುಮೂಲಫಲಾಯುತಃ abounding in many roots and fruits, ವಿಶ್ರುತಃ well-known, ಸಃ that, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಃ Chitrakuta, ಶೈಲಃ mountain, ಭವತಾ by you, ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ go.

O mighty Rama, I think mount Chitrakuta is the right place for you to stay. Go there. That mountain is full of trees of every kind, is inhabited by kinneras and uragas (serpents). It echoes with the cries of peacocks, is frequented by mighty tuskers. Filled with fruits and roots, it is sacred and pleasant.
ತತ್ರ ಕುಞ್ಜರಯೂಥಾನಿ ಮೃಗಯೂಥಾನಿ ಚಾಭಿತಃ.

ವಿಚರನ್ತಿ ವನಾನ್ತೇಸ್ಮಿನ್ ತಾನಿ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.54.41৷৷


ರಾಘವ Rama, ತತ್ರ there, ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ವನಾನ್ತೇ in the middle of the forest, ಅಭಿತಃ throughout, ಕುಞ್ಜರಯೂಥಾನಿ herds of elephants, ಮೃಗಯೂಥಾನಿ ಚ and herds of deer, ವಿಚರನ್ತಿ range about, ತಾನಿ all that, ದ್ರಕ್ಷಯಸಿ you will see.

You will see, O Rama, herds of elephants and deer ranging in the forest.
ಸರಿತ್ಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾನ್ ದರೀಕನ್ದರನಿರ್ಝರಾನ್.

ಚರತಃ ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ನನ್ದಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಮನಸ್ತವ৷৷2.54.42৷৷


ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ along with Sita, ಸರಿತ್ಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾನ್ rivers, waterfalls, plateaus, ದರೀಕನ್ದರನಿರ್ಝರಾನ್ caverns and mountain-torrents, ಚರತಃ while wandering, ತವ your, ಮನಃ mind, ನನ್ದಿಷ್ಯತಿ will be joyful.

Your heart will be filled with joy while you wander with Sita beholding rivers,
waterfalls, plateaus, caverns and mountain-torrents.
ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಕೋಯಷ್ಟಿಕಕೋಕಿಲಸ್ವನೈರ್ವಿನಾದಿತಂ ತಂ ವಸುಧಾಧರಂ ಶಿವಮ್.

ಮೃಗೈಶ್ಚ ಮತ್ತೈರ್ಬಹುಭಿಶ್ಚ ಕುಞ್ಜರೈಃ ಸುರಮ್ಯಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಸಮಾವಸಾಶ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.54.43৷৷


ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಕೋಯಷ್ಟಿಕಕೋಕಿಲಸ್ವನೈಃ with the notes of cheerful lapwings and cuckoos, ವಿನಾದಿತಮ್ echoed, ಬಹುಭಿಃ by many, ಮೃಗೈಶ್ಚ deer (animals), ಮತ್ತೈ: intoxicated, ಕುಞ್ಜರೈಶ್ಚ by elephants, ಸುರಮ್ಯಮ್ exceedingly charming, ತಂ ವಸುಧಾಧರಮ್ that mount Chitrakuta, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಸಮಾವಸ dwell there.

The auspicious mountain (Chaitrakuta) resounds with the note of cheerful lapwings and cuckoos. Intoxicated elephants and deer move about in the enchanting mountain. There you may settle down in a hermitage.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಚತುಃಪಞ್ಚಾಶ ಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
