[The trio cross Yamuna --- decide to reside on the river bank --- Sita rejoices getting her favourite flowers and fruits.]

ಉಷಿತ್ವಾ ರಜನೀಂ ತತ್ರ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾವರಿನ್ದಮೌ.

ಮಹರ್ಷಿಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯಾಥ ಜಗ್ಮತುಸ್ತಂ ಗಿರಿಂ ಪ್ರತಿ৷৷2.55.1৷৷


ಅರಿನ್ದಮೌ destroyers of enemies, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾಃ the (two) princes, ತತ್ರ there, ರಜನೀ night, ಉಷಿತ್ವಾ having spent, ಅಥ thereafter, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಮ್ great sage (Bharadwaja), ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having offered obeisance, ತಂ ಗಿರಿಂ ಪ್ರತಿ in the direction of that mountain, ಜಗ್ಮತುಃ went.

After spending the night, the princes, destroyers of enemies, offered obeisance to that
great sage (Bharadhwaja) and went towards that mount Chitrkuta.
ತೇಷಾಂ ಚೈವ ಸ್ವಸ್ತ್ಯಯನಂ ಮಹರ್ಷಿ ಸ್ಸ ಚಕಾರ ಹ.

ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾಂಶ್ಚೈವ ತಾನ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪಿತಾ ಪುತ್ರಾನಿವಾನ್ವಗಾತ್৷৷2.55.2৷৷


ಸಃ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಃ that great sage, ತೇಷಾಮ್ to them, ಸ್ವಸ್ತ್ಯಯನಮ್ blessings for their safe journey, ಚಕಾರ ಹ made, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾನ್ set forth, ತಾನ್ them, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಪಿತಾ father, ಪುತ್ರಾನಿವ like his own children, ಅನ್ವಗಾತ್ ಚ followed also.

Seeing them setting forth, the great sage blessed them for a safe journey and followed them like a father following his children.
ತತಃ ಪ್ರಚಕ್ರಮೇ ವಕ್ತುಂ ವಚನಂ ಸ ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ.

ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.55.3৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ effulgent, ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ great sage, ಸಃ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ that Bharadwaja, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ to one whose strength is truth, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ವಚನಮ್ words, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಪ್ರಚಕ್ರಮೇ began.

Then that great effulgent sage Bharadwaja began to speak to Rama whose strength was truth.
ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಮುನಯೋ ಸ್ಸನ್ಧಿಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಮನುಜರ್ಷಭೌ.

ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಮನುಗಚ್ಛೇತಾಂ ನದೀಂ ಪಶ್ಚಾನ್ಮುಖಾಶ್ರಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.55.4৷৷


ಮನುಜರ್ಷಭೌ two (best) among men, ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಮುನಯೋಃ ಸನ್ಧಿಮ್ the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, ಗತ್ವಾ having reached, ಪಶ್ಚಾನ್ಮುಖಾಶ್ರಿತಾಮ್ flowing westward, ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀ ನದೀಮ್ river Kalindi (Yamuna), ಅನುಗಚ್ಛೇತಾಮ್ proceed along.

Reaching the confluence of rivers Ganga and Yamuna, O Rama and Lakshmana best among men! proceed along the Kalindi (Yamuna) river flowing westward.
ಅಥಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತು ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀ ಶೀಘ್ರಸ್ರೋತಸಮಾಪಗಾಮ್.

ತಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತೀರ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತಂ ಪುರಾಣಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಘವೌ৷৷2.55.5৷৷

ತತ್ರ ಯೂಯಂ ಪ್ಲವಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ತರತಾಂಶುಮತೀಂ ನದೀಮ್.


ರಾಘವೌ the scions of the Raghus (Rama and Lakshmana), ಅಥ then, ಶೀಘ್ರಸ್ರೋತಸಮ್ rapidiy flowing ಆಪಗಾಮ್ river, ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಮ್ Kalindi (Yamuna), ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಪ್ರಚಲಿತಮ್ served by many, ಪುರಾಣಮ್ ancient, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ತೀರ್ಥಮ್ spot on the river bank, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ finding, ತತ್ರ there, ಯೂಯಮ್ you, ಪ್ಲವಮ್ a raft, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ಅಂಶುಮತೀಮ್ that daughter of the Sun (Yamuna), ನದೀಮ್ river, ತರತ cross over.

On reaching that swift-flowing river Yamuna, O Rama and Lakshmana! O scions of the Raghu race, you will find an ancient spot (on the river bank). There make a raft and cross Kalindi, daughter of the Sun.
ತತೋ ನ್ಯಗ್ರೋಧಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಮಹಾನ್ತಂ ಹರಿತಚ್ಛದಮ್৷৷2.55.6৷৷

ವಿವೃದ್ಧಂ ಬಹುಭಿರ್ವೃಕ್ಷೈ ಶ್ಶ್ಯಾಮಂ ಸಿದ್ಧೋಪಸೇವಿತಮ್.

ತಸ್ಮೈ ಸೀತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಯುಞ್ಜೀತಾಶಿಷಶ್ಶಿವಾಃ৷৷2.55.7৷৷


ತತಃ ಹರಿತಚ್ಛದಮ್ with lush green leaves, ಮಹಾನ್ತಮ್ large, ಬಹುಭಿ: by many, ವೃಕ್ಷೈ: trees, ವಿವೃಧ್ದಮ್ densely grown, ಸಿಧ್ದೋಪಸೇವಿತಮ್ inhabited by siddhas (sages who have attained perfection), ಶ್ಯಾಮಮ್ dark (shady), ನ್ಯಗ್ರೋಧಮ್ banyan tree, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having approached, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ತಸ್ಮೈ to it, ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ folded palms, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ಶಿವಾಃ auspicious, ಆಶಿಷ: invocations, ಪ್ರಯುಞ್ಜೀತ offer.

There you will find a large, banyan tree with its lush green leaves, looking dark with its densely grown trees. It is inhabited by siddhas. Sita should offer with folded palms invocations for her well-being.
ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತು ತಂ ವೃಕ್ಷಂ ವಸೇದ್ವಾತಿಕ್ರಮೇತ ವಾ.

ಕ್ರೋಶಮಾತ್ರಂ ತತೋ ಗತ್ವಾ ನೀಲಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಥ ಕಾನನಮ್৷৷2.55.8৷৷

ಪಲಾಶಬದರೀಮಿಶ್ರಂ ರಮ್ಯಂ ವಂಶೈಶ್ಚ ಯಾಮುನೈಃ.


ತಮ್ ವೃಕ್ಷಮ್ that tree, ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ವಸೇದ್ವಾ one may tarry or, ಅತಿಕ್ರಮೇತ ವಾ or can go past, ತತ: from there, ಕ್ರೋಶಮಾತ್ರಮ್ at a distance of a krosa, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ನೀಲಮ್ dark, ಪಲಾಶಬದರೀಮಿಶ್ರಮ್ mixed with Palasa and Badari trees, ಯಾಮುನೈ: on Yamuna, ವಂಶೈ: ಚ with bamboos also, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ beautiful, ಕಾನನಮ್ forest, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಥ you will see.

Reaching that tree, you may tarry or proceed further. A krosa from there, you will see a beautiful forest filled with dark trees mixed with Palasas and badaris and bamboos on the Yamuna.
ಸ ಪನ್ಥಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ಗತ ಸ್ಸುಬಹುಶೋ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.55.9৷৷

ರಮ್ಯೋ ಮಾರ್ದವಯುಕ್ತಶ್ಚ ವನದಾವೈರ್ವಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ.


ಸ: that one, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ of Chitrakuta, ಪನ್ಥಾ: path, ಮಯಾ by me, ಬಹುಶ: several times, ಗತ: gone, ರಮ್ಯ beautiful, ಮಾರ್ದವಯುಕ್ತಶ್ಚ marked with smoothness, ವನದಾವೈ: forest fires, ವಿವರ್ಜಿತ: is without.

That path leads to Chitrakuta. I had travelled through it several times. It is beautiful, smooth and safe from forest fires.
ಇತಿ ಪನ್ಥಾನಮಾವೇದ್ಯ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಸ್ಸನ್ಯವರ್ತತ৷৷2.55.10৷৷

ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ತಥೇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ರಾಮೇಣ ವಿನಿವರ್ತಿತಃ.


ಸ: ಮಹರ್ಷಿ: that great sage, ಇತಿ thus, ಪನ್ಥಾನಮ್ path, ಆವೇದ್ಯ after directing, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ತಥೇತಿ 'so be it', ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ paying obeisance, ವಿನಿವರ್ತಿತ: having been requested to return, ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ turned back.

The great sage returned after instructing Rama about the path. So be it, said Rama and offering obeisance requested Bharadhwaja to go back.
ಉಪಾವೃತ್ತೇ ಮುನೌ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ರಾಮೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.55.11৷৷

ಕೃತಪುಣ್ಯಾಃ ಸ್ಮ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ ಮುನಿರ್ಯನ್ನೋನುಕಮ್ಪತೇ.


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಮುನೌ the sage (Bharadhwaja), ಉಪಾವೃತ್ತೇ having turned back, ರಾಮ Rama, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ son of Sumitra, Lakshmana, ಕೃತಪುಣ್ಯಾ: ಸ್ಮ we are fortunate indeed, ಯತ್ since, ಮುನಿಃ the sage, ನ: on us, ಅನುಕಮ್ಪತೇ is showing compassion.

With the sage gone, Rama said, O Saumitri (son of Sumitra)! we are lucky, for the sage has been so kind.
ಇತಿ ತೌ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತ್ವಾ ಮನಸ್ವಿನೌ.

ಸೀತಾಮೇವಾಗ್ರತಃ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಂ ಜಗ್ಮತುರ್ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.55.12৷৷


ಮನಸ್ವಿನೌ noble-minded, ತೌ those two, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ tigers (best) among men, ಇತಿ thus, ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತ್ವಾ conversing, ಸೀತಾಮ್ to Sita, ಅಗ್ರತ: ಇವ ahead of them, ಕೃತ್ವಾ keeping, ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ towards river Kalindi (Yamuna), ಜಗ್ಮತು: proceeded.

Thus talking with one another, the two noble-minded tigers (best) among men advanced towards river Kalindi (Yamuna) with Sita walking in front.
ಅಥಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತು ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಸ್ರೋತೋವಹಾಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಚಿನ್ತಾಮಾಪೇದಿರೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ನದೀಜಲತಿತೀರ್ಷವಃ৷৷2.55.13৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಸರ್ವೇ all of them, ಶೀಘ್ರಸ್ರೋತೋವಹಾಮ್ rapidly flowing, ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Kalindi, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ನದೀಜಲತಿತೀರ್ಷವ: wishing to cross the river, ಚಿನ್ತಾಮ್ ಅಪೇದಿರೇ pondered.

Thereafter, they all reached the rapidly flowing river Kalindi and began pondering how to cross it.
ತೌ ಕಾಷ್ಠಸಙ್ಘಾತಮಥೋ ಚಕ್ರತು ಸ್ಸುಮಹಾಪ್ಲವಮ್.

ಶುಷ್ಕೈರ್ವಂಶೈ ಸ್ಸಮಾಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಮುಶೀರೈಶ್ಚ ಸಮಾವೃತಮ್৷৷2.55.14৷৷


ಅಥ then, ತೌ both of them, ಶುಷ್ಕೈ: with dry, ವಂಶೈ: bamboos, ಸಮಾಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಮ್ well-spread, ಉಶೀರೈ:
fragrant roots of Ushira bush, ಸಮಾವೃತಮ್ covered with, ಕಾಷ್ಟಸಙ್ಘಾತಮ್ with logs of wood joined together, ಮಹಾಪ್ಲವಮ್ big float, ಚಕ್ರತು: made.

Then they both made a big wooden float by joining logs of wood, spreading bamboos on it and covering it with the (fragrant roots of) Ushira bushes.
ತತೋ ವೇತಸಶಾಖಾಶ್ಚ ಜಮ್ಬೂಶಾಖಾಶ್ಚ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್.

ಚಕಾರ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಛಿತ್ವಾ ಸೀತಾಯಾ ಸ್ಸುಖಮಾಸನಮ್৷৷2.55.15৷৷


ತತ: then, ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ valiant, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ: Lakshmana, ವೇತಸಶಾಖಾಶ್ಚ stems of reeds, ಜಮ್ಬೂಶಾಖಾಶ್ಚ branches from Jambu tree, ಛಿತ್ವಾ after cutting, ಸೀತಾಯಾ: for Sita, ಸುಖಮ್ comfortable, ಆಸನಮ್ seat, ಚಕಾರ made.

The valiant Lakshmana cut the stems of reeds and branches of the Jambu tree to prepare a comfortable seat for Sita (on that float).
ತತ್ರ ಶ್ರಿಯಮಿವಾಚಿನ್ತ್ಯಾಂ ರಾಮೋ ದಾಶರಥಿಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾಮ್.

ಈಷತ್ಸಂಲಜ್ಜಮಾನಾಂ ತಾಮಧ್ಯಾರೋಪಯತಪ್ಲವಮ್৷৷2.55.16৷৷


ದಾಶರಥಿ: Dasaratha's son, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತತ್ರ there, ಶ್ರಿಯಮಿವ looking like Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), ಅಚಿನ್ತ್ಯಾಮ್ inconceivable (majesty), ಈಷತ್ a little, ಸಂಲಜ್ಜಮಾನಾಮ್ feeling shy, ತಾಮ್ ಪ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ that beloved Sita, ಪ್ಲವಮ್ float, ಅಧ್ಯಾರೋಪಯತ ascended.

Rama, son of Dasaratha helped his beloved (Sita), who was looking inconceivably like Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and was feeling a little bashful while stepping on to the float.
ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ ಚ ತತ್ರ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ವಸನೇ ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ಚ.

ಪ್ಲವೇ ಕಠಿನಕಾಜಂ ಚ ರಾಮಶ್ಚಕ್ರೇ ಸಹಾಯುಧೈಃ৷৷2.55.17৷৷


ರಾಮ: Rama, ತತ್ರ there, ಪ್ಲವೇ on the float, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ Sita's, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ on the side of, ವಸನೇ clothes, ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ಚ ornaments, ಕಠಿನಕಾಜಂ a crowbar and a basket, ಆಯುಧೈ: weapons, ಚಕ್ರೇ placed.

Rama placed robes and ornaments on the float by the side of Sita and a spade and a basket along with weapons.
ಆರೋಪ್ಯ ಪ್ರಥಮಂ ಸೀತಾಂ ಸಙ್ಘಾಟಂ ಪರಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ತೌ.

ತತ ಪ್ರತೇರತುರ್ಯತ್ತೌ ವೀರೌ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜೌ৷৷2.55.18৷৷


ವೀರೌ heroes, ತೌ those two, ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜೌ Dasratha's sons, ಸಙ್ಘಾಟಮ್ that float, ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ tightly holding, ಪ್ರಥಮಮ್ at first, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಆರೋಪ್ಯ making her board, ತತಃ then, ಯತ್ತೌ carefully, ಪ್ರತೇರತುಃ crossed.

Those valiant sons of Dasaratha held the float (firmly) to help Sita step on to it. Then they crossed the river carefully.
ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಮಧ್ಯಮಾಯಾತಾ ಸೀತಾ ತ್ವೇನಾಮವನ್ದತ.

ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ ದೇವಿ! ತರಾಮಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ಪಾರಯೇ ನ್ಮೇ ಪತಿರ್ವ್ರತಮ್৷৷2.55.19৷৷

ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ ತ್ವಾಂ ಗೋಸಹಸ್ರೇಣ ಸುರಾಘಟಶತೇನ ಚ.

ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಗತೇ ರಾಮೇ ಪುರೀ ಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಪಾಲಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.56.20৷৷


ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಮಧ್ಯಮ್ the middle of the river Kalindi (Yamuna), ಆಯಾತಾ on reaching, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಏನಾಮ್ to this river, ಅವನ್ದತ made reverential salutation, ದೇವೀ O goddess, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ತರಾಮಿ crossing, ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ let safety be ours, ಮೇ my, ಪತಿ: husband, ವ್ರತಮ್ vow, ಪಾರಯೇತ್ may fulfil, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ safely, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಪಾಲಿತಾಮ್ ruled by Ikshvaku kings, ಪುರೀಮ್ city of Ayodhya, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಗತೇ on his return, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಗೋಸಹಸ್ರೇಣ with the offer of a thousand cows, ಸುರಾಘಟಶತೇನ ಚ with a hundred pots of wine, ಯಕ್ಷೇ will worship.

On reaching the middle of the river Yamuna, Sita made reverential salutations to her saying O goddess, I am crossing you, may safety be ours and may my husband fulfil his vow! After Rama's (safe) return to the city (of Ayodhya) ruled by the Ikshvaku kings, I shall worship you with a thousand cows and a hundred pots of wine.
ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀ ಮಥ ಸೀತಾ ತು ಯಾಚಮಾನಾ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ.

ತೀರಮೇವಾಭಿಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ವರವರ್ಣಿನೀ৷৷2.55.21৷৷


ವರವರ್ಣಿನೀ lady of fair complexion, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಕಾಲಿನ್ದೀಮ್ Yamuna, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿ: folding her hands, ಯಾಚಮಾನಾ in supplication, ಅಥ thereafter, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ತೀರಮೇವ southern bank, ಅಭಿಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ reached.

While Sita with her fair complexion was thus invoking river Yamuna with folded hands they reached the southern bank.
ತತ ಪ್ಲವೇನಾಂಶುಮತೀಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಗಾಮೂರ್ಮಿಮಾಲಿನೀಮ್.

ತೀರಜೈ ರ್ಬಹುಭಿರ್ವೃಕ್ಷೈ ಸ್ಸನ್ತೇರುರ್ಯಮುನಾಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.55.22৷৷


ತತ: then, ಶೀಘ್ರಗಾಮ್ swift-flowing, ಊರ್ಮಿಮಾಲಿನೀಮ್ full of waves, ತೀರಜೈ: growing on the banks, ಬಹುಭಿ: many, ವೃಕ್ಷೈ: trees, ಅಂಶುಮತೀಮ್ daughter of the Sun-god, ಯಮುನಾಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Yamuna, ಸನ್ತೇರು: crossed.

They crossed the swift-flowing river Yamuna, daughter of the Sun-god, full of waves and with trees growing thick on her banks.
ತೇ ತೀರ್ಣಾಃ ಪ್ಲವಮುತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾಯ ಯಮುನಾವನಾತ್.

ಶ್ಯಾಮಂ ನ್ಯಗ್ರೋಧ ಮಾಸೇದು ಶ್ಶೀತಲಂ ಹರಿತಚ್ಛದಮ್৷৷2.55.23৷৷


ತೀರ್ಣಾ: having crossed, ತೇ they, ಪ್ಲವಮ್ raft, ಉತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ after leaving, ಯಮುನಾವನಾತ್ from the forest adjoining Yamuna river, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾಯ after starting, ಹರಿತಚ್ಛದಮ್ a place full of greenery, ಶೀತಲಮ್ cool, ಶ್ಯಾಮಮ್ dark, ನ್ಯಗ್ರೋಧಮ್ banyan tree, ಅಸೇದು: reached.

Having crossed the river, they left the float and proceeded from the adjoining forest of Yamuna and reached the dark, cool banyan tree covered with lush green leaves.
ನ್ಯಗ್ರೋಧಂ ತಮುಪಾಗಮ್ಯ ವೈದೇಹೀ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಂ ಚೈವ ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಂ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಂ ಚ ಯಶಶ್ವಿನೀಮ್.

ಇತಿ ಸೀತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪರ್ಯಗಚ್ಛದ್ವನಸ್ಪತಿಮ್৷৷2.55.25৷৷


ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ತಂ ನ್ಯಗ್ರೋಧಮ್ that banyan tree, ಉಪಾಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಮಹಾವೃಕ್ಷ! O great tree, ತೇ to you, ನಮ:ಅಸ್ತು my salutations, ಮೇ ಪತಿಃ my husband, ವ್ರತಮ್ vow, ಪಾರಯೇತ್ may fulfil, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಂ ಚ and Kausalya, ಯಶಶ್ವಿನೀಮ್ illustrious, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಂ ಚ also Sumitra, ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮ್ may I behold, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಇತಿ in this way, ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ offering reverential salutations with folded hands, ವನಸ್ಪತಿಮ್ to the tree, ಪರ್ಯಗಚ್ಛತ್ went round.

Having reached the banyan tree, Sita invoked it, saying, 'O great tree! I offer you my salutations. May my husband fulfil his vow! May I behold Kausalya and the illustrious Sumitra on my return. Saying so, she went round the tree offering reverential salutations with folded hands.
ಅವಲೋಕ್ಯ ತತ ಸ್ಸೀತಾಮಾಯಾಚನ್ತೀಮನಿನ್ದಿತಾಮ್.

ದಯಿತಾಂ ಚ ವಿಧೇಯಾಂ ಚ ರಾಮೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.55.26৷৷


ತತ: then, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅಯಾಚನ್ತೀಮ್ who was seeking blessings, ಅನಿನ್ದಿತಾಮ್ blemishless, ದಯಿತಾಮ್ beloved, ವಿಧೇಯಾಂ ಚ and obedient, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಅವಲೋಕ್ಯ having seen, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Beholding the obedient, blemishless, beloved Sita invoking blessings, Rama said to Lakhsmana:
ಸೀತಾಮಾದಾಯ ಗಚ್ಛತ್ವಮಗ್ರತೋ ಭರತಾನುಜ.

ಪೃಷ್ಠತೋಹಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸಾಯುಧೋ ದ್ವಿಪದಾಂ ವರ৷৷2.55.27৷৷


ದ್ವಿಪದಾಂ ವರ best among bipeds (men), ಭರತಾನುಜ brother of Bharata (Lakshmana), ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಆದಾಯ taking with you, ಅಗ್ರತ: ahead, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸಾಯುಧ: armed with weapons, ಪೃಷ್ಠತ: from behind, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will follow.

O Lakshmana, best among bipeds (men) and brother of Bharata! walk ahead with Sita and I shall follow with weapons.
ಯದ್ಯತ್ಫಲಂ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಯತೇ ಪುಷ್ಪಂ ವಾ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ.

ತತ್ತತ್ಪ್ರದದ್ಯಾ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಯತ್ರಾಸ್ಯಾ ರಮತೇ ಮನಃ৷৷2.55.28৷৷


ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ daughter of Janaka, ಯದ್ಯತ್ಫಲಮ್ whichever fruit, ಪುಷ್ಪಂ ವಾ or flower, ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಯತೇ requests for, ತತ್ತತ್ that one, ಅಸ್ಯಾ: ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ: for this Sita, ಮನ: mind, ಯತ್ರ where, ರಮತೇ takes pleasure, ಪ್ರದದ್ಯ give.

Whatever fruit or flower the daughter of Janaka asks for, get it. Whatever pleases her mind give it.
ಗಚ್ಛತೋಸ್ತು ತಯೋರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಬಭೂವ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ.

ಮಾತಙ್ಗಯೋರ್ಮಧ್ಯಗತಾ ಶುಭಾ ನಾಗವಧೂರಿವ৷৷2.55.29৷৷


ಗಚ್ಛತೋಃ going like that, ತಯೋಃ of both, ಮಧ್ಯಗತಾ moving in the middle, ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ daughter of Janaka, ಮಾತಙ್ಗಯೋಃ of two male elephants, ಮಧ್ಯಗತಾ in between, ಶುಭಾ auspicious, ನಾಗವಧೂರಿವ
like a female elephant, ಬಭೂವ remained.

The daughter of Janaka walked between them like a she-elephant between two males.
ಏಕೈಕಂ ಪಾದಪಂ ಗುಲ್ಮಂ ಲತಾಂ ವಾ ಪುಷ್ಪಶಾಲಿನೀಮ್.

ಅದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಾಂ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ ರಾಮಂ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಸಾಬಲಾ৷৷2.55.30৷৷


ಸಾ ಅಬಲಾ that gentle lady, ಏಕೈಕಮ್ one by one, ಪಾದಪಮ್ tree, ಗುಲ್ಮಮ್ shrub, ಅದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಾಮ್ never seen before, ಪುಷ್ಪಶಾಲಿನೀಮ್ flowering, ಲತಾಂ ವಾ or a creeper, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ seeing, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ asked.

That gentle lady enquired of Rama about a tree or a shrub or a creeper in full bloom which she did not see before.
ರಮಣೀಯಾನ್ಬಹುವಿಧಾನ್ಪಾದಪಾನ್ಕುಸುಮೋತ್ಕಟಾನ್.

ಸೀತಾವಚನಸಂರಬ್ಧ ಆನಯಾಮಾಸ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ৷৷2.55.31৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಸೀತಾವಚನಸಂರಬ್ಧಃ cheered by the indent of Sita, ಕುಸುಮೋತ್ಕಟಾನ್ laden with flowers, ರಮಣೀಯಾನ್ beautiful, ಬಹುವಿಧಾನ್ various, ಪಾದಪಾನ್ trees, ಆನಯಾಮಾಸ brought.

Cheered by Sita's indents, Lakshmana brought her various beautiful plants and stocks of flowers.
ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಲುಕಜಲಾಂ ಹಂಸಸಾರಸನಾದಿತಾಮ್.

ರೇಮೇ ಜನಕರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಸುತಾ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತದಾ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.55.32৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಜನಕರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಸುತಾ daughter of king Janaka (Sita), ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಲುಕಜಲಾಮ್ wonderful water and sand, ಹಂಸಸಾರಸನಾದಿತಾಮ್ echoing with the sounds of swans and cranes, ನದೀಮ್ river Yamuna, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ beholding, ರೇಮೇ exceedingly delighted.

Beholding the river Yamuna with its wonderful water and sand echoing with the cackle of swans and cranes, Sita went ecstatic.
ಕ್ರೋಶಮಾತ್ರಂ ತತೋ ಗತ್ವಾ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ.

ಬಹೂನ್ಮೇಧ್ಯಾನ್ಮೃಗಾನ್ಹತ್ವಾ ಚೇರತುರ್ಯಮುನಾವನೇ৷৷2.55.33৷৷


ತತ: then, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ the two brothers, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ Rama and Lakshmana, ಕ್ರೋಶಮಾತ್ರಮ್ a krosa, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಮೇಧ್ಯಾನ್ suitable for sacrifice (pure), ಬಹೂನ್ many, ಮೃಗಾನ್ deer, ಹತ್ವಾ having slain, ಯಮುನಾವನೇ in the forest on the bank of Yamuna, ಚೇರತು: ate.

After walking a krosa into the forest on the bank of Yamuna, the two brothers killed many deer suitable for sacrifice and ate them.
ವಿಹೃತ್ಯ ತೇ ಬರ್ಹಿಣಪೂಗನಾದಿತೇ ಶುಭೇ ವನೇ ವಾನರವಾರಣಾಯುತೇ.

ಸಮಂ ನದೀವಪ್ರಮುಪೇತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮತಂ ನಿವಾಸ ಮಾಜಗ್ಮು ರದೀನದರ್ಶನಾಃ৷৷2.55.34৷৷


ಅದೀನದರ್ಶನಾ: appearing in high spirits, ತೇ they, ಬರ್ಹಿಣಪೂಗನಾದಿತೇ resounding with the melody of peacocks, ವಾನರವಾರಣಾಯುತೇ inhabited by monkeys and elephants, ಶುಭೇ ವನೇ in that lovely forest, ವಿಹೃತ್ಯ roaming about, ಸಮಮ್ levelled, ಸಮ್ಮತಮ್ convenient, ನದೀವಪ್ರಮ್ bank of the river, ಉಪೇತ್ಯ having reached, ನಿವಾಸಮ್ dwelling, ಆಜಗ್ಮತು: made.

They reached the table-land on the bank of that river and moved in high spirit in the lovely forest resounding with cries of flocks of peacocks and teeming with monkeys and elephants. Finally they selected a spot for their stay.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಪಞ್ಚಪಞ್ಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyfifth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
