[Sumantra returns to Ayodhya and reports to king Dasaratha --- Dasaratha and Kausalya fall into a swoon on hearing about Rama in exile.]

ಕಥಯಿತ್ವಾ ಸುದುಃಖಾರ್ತಸ್ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಚಿರಂ ಸಹ.

ರಾಮೇ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕೂಲಸ್ಥೇ ಜಗಾಮ ಸ್ವಗೃಹಂ ಗುಹಃ৷৷2.57.1৷৷


ರಾಮೇ Rama, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕೂಲಸ್ಥೇ had reached the southern bank (of the river), ಗುಹ: Guha, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಸಹ with Sumantra, ಚಿರಮ್ for a long while, ಕಥಯಿತ್ವಾ after talking, ಸುದುಃಖಾರ್ತಃ tormented with anguish, ಸ್ವಗೃಹಮ್ his home, ಜಗಾಮ reached.

Until Rama reached the southern bank, Guha kept talking with Sumantra for long and returned home with great sorrow.
ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಭಿಗಮನಂ ಪ್ರಯಾಗೇ ಚ ಸಹಾಸನಮ್.

ಆಗಿರೇರ್ಗಮನಂ ತೇಷಾಂ ತತ್ರಸ್ಥೈರುಪಲಕ್ಷಿತಮ್৷৷2.57.2৷৷


ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಭಿಗಮನಮ್ arrival at the hermitage of Bharadwaja, ಪ್ರಯಾಗೇ at Prayaga, ಸಹಾಸನಮ್ stay with him, ಆಗಿರೇಃ till that Chitrakuta mountain, ಗಮನಮ್ journey, ತತ್ರಸ್ಥೈಃ by the men waiting there, ಉಪಲಕ್ಷಿತಮ್ has been observed.

Positioned there, they could mark their arrival at Bharadwaja's at Prayaga, their stay (night-halt) and their onward journey to Chitrakuta mountain.
ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತಸ್ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋಥ ಯೋಜಯಿತ್ವಾ ಹಯೋತ್ತಮಾನ್.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮೇವ ನಗರೀಂ ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ಗಾಢದುರ್ಮನಾಃ৷৷2.57.3৷৷


ಅಥ after this, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತಃ having been permitted by Rama to leave, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ಹಯೋತ್ತಮಾನ್ best of horses, ಯೋಜಯಿತ್ವಾ harnessing, ಗಾಢದುರ್ಮನಾಃ with a heavy heart, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ನಗರೀಮೇವ to the city of Ayodhya, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ set out.

Permitted by Rama to leave, Sumantra harnessed the best of horses and set out for the city of Ayodhya with a heavy heart.
ಸ ವನಾನಿ ಸುಗನ್ಧೀನಿ ಸರಿತಶ್ಚ ಸರಾಂಸಿ ಚ.

ಪಶ್ಯನ್ನತಿಯಯೌ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಗ್ರಾಮಾಣಿ ನಗರಾಣಿ ಚ৷৷2.57.4৷৷


ಸಃ that, ಸುಗನ್ಧೀನಿ fragrant, ವನಾನಿ forests, ಸರಿತಃ ಚ rivers as well, ಸರಾಂಸಿ ಚ lakes also, ಗ್ರಾಮಾಣಿ villages, ನಗರಾಣಿ ಚ towns also, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ seeing, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ swiftly, ಅತಿಯಯೌ passed through them.

Beholding the fragrance-filled forests, rivers, lakes, villages and towns on the way, Sumantra quickly crossed them.
ತತ ಸ್ಸಾಯಾಹ್ನ ಸಮಯೇ ತೃತೀಯೇಹನಿ ಸಾರಥಿಃ.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಸಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಹ৷৷2.57.5৷৷


ಸಾರಥಿಃ charioteer, ತೃತೀಯೇ on the third, ಅಹನಿ day, ಸಾಯಾಹ್ನ ಸಮಯೇ at dusk, ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾಮ್ cheerless, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ಸಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having reached, ದದರ್ಶ ಹ saw.

The charioteer reached Ayodhya on the third day at dusk and found the city cheerless.
ಸ ಶೂನ್ಯಾಮಿವ ನಿಶ್ಶಬ್ದಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಶ್ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ ಶೋಕವೇಗಸಮಾಹತಃ৷৷2.57.6৷৷


ಸಃ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ that Sumantra, ನಿಶ್ಶಬ್ದಾಮ್ silent, ಶೂನ್ಯಾಮಿವ almost empty, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ deeply dejected, ಶೋಕವೇಗಸಮಾಹತಃ afflicted with gushing tears, ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ reflected.

Beholding the silent city, almost empty, the deeply depressed Sumantra, afflicted with gushing tears reflected:
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಸಗಜಾ ಸಾಶ್ವಾ ಸಜನಾ ಸಜನಾಧಿಪಾ.

ರಾಮಸನ್ತಾಪದುಃಖೇನ ದಗ್ಧಾ ಶೋಕಾಗ್ನಿನಾ ಪುರೀ৷৷2.57.7৷৷


ಸಗಜಾಃ with elephants, ಸಾಶ್ವಾಃ with horses, ಸಜನಾಃ with its people, ಸಜನಾಧಿಪಾ with the king, ಪುರೀ city, ರಾಮಸನ್ತಾಪದುಃಖೇನ in the sorrow caused by Rama's suffering, ಶೋಕಾಗ್ನಿನಾ by the fire of sorrow, ದಗ್ಧಾ burnt.

Has the city along with its elephants, horses, people and its king perished in the fire of grief for Rama?
ಇತಿ ಚಿನ್ತಾಪರಸ್ಸೂತೋ ವಾಜಿಭಿಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರಪಾತಿಭಿಃ.

ನಗರದ್ವಾರಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತ್ವರಿತಃ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಹ৷৷2.57.8৷৷


ಇತಿ in this way, ಚಿನ್ತಾಪರಃ absorbed in this thought, ಸೂತಃ the charioteer, ಶೀಘ್ರಪಾತಿಭಿಃ by the swift-running, ವಾಜಿಭಿಃ horses, ನಗರದ್ವಾರಮ್ entrance to the city, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having arrived, ತ್ವರಿತಃ quickly, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಹ entered.

Absorbed in these thoughts, the charioteer came to the city-gate, carried by the swift-footed horses, and quickly entered the city.
ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮಭಿಯಾನ್ತಂ ತಂ ಶತಶೋಥ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ.

ಕ್ವ ರಾಮ ಇತಿ ಪೃಚ್ಛನ್ತಸ್ಸೂತಮಭ್ಯದ್ರವನ್ನರಾಃ৷৷2.57.9৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಅಭಿಯಾನ್ತಮ್ moving towards, ತಮ್ that, ಸೂತಮ್ charioteer, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ Sumantra, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಕ್ವ where?, ಇತಿ thus, ಪೃಚ್ಛನ್ತಃ enquiring, ನರಾಃ people, ಶತಶಃ in hundreds, ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ in thousands, ಅಭ್ಯದ್ರವನ್ poured towards him.

Meanwhile as the charioteer was moving towards the city, hundreds and thousands of men came pouring towards him enquiring, 'Where is Rama?'
ತೇಷಾಂ ಶಶಂಸ ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಾಮಹಮಾಪೃಚ್ಛ್ಯ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತೋ ನಿವೃತ್ತೋಸ್ಮಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕೇಣ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಾ৷৷2.57.10৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಾಮ್ river Ganga, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಆಪೃಚ್ಛ್ಯ having taken leave, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕೇಣ by the righteous, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ great (Rama), ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತಃ having been permitted, ನಿವೃತ್ತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I have returned, ತೇಷಾಮ್ to them, ಶಶಂಸ said.

I took leave of the great, righteous Rama on the bank of the Ganga and have returned with his permission. (replied Sumantra).
ತೇ ತೀರ್ಣಾ ಇತಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಾ ಜನಾಃ.

ಅಹೋ ಧಿಗಿತಿ ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ಹಾ! ರಾಮೇತಿ ಚ ಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ৷৷2.57.11৷৷


ತೇ they, ತೀರ್ಣಾಃ ಇತಿ crossed the river, thus, ವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ having come to know, ಜನಾಃ people, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಾಃ faces filled with tears, ಅಹೋ Oh, ಧಿಕ್ O fie upon us, ಇತಿ thus, ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸ್ಯ sighing, ಹಾ ರಾಮ ಇತಿ saying 'Alas Rama!', ಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ ಚ cried aloud.

Hearing that they had (the trio) crossed the river Ganga, the people, with their faces filled with tears sighed and saying 'Fie upon us! Alas, Rama!' cried out aloud.
ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ಚ ವಚಸ್ತೇಷಾಂ ಬೃನ್ದಂ ಬೃನ್ದಂ ಚ ತಿಷ್ಠತಾಮ್.

ಹತಾಸ್ಮ ಖಲು ಯೇ ನೇಹ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮ ಇತಿ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷2.57.12৷৷


ಯೇ all of us, ಇಹ here, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಃ unable to see, ಹತಾಃ ಸ್ಮ ಖಲು indeed we are lost (deprived), ಇತಿ thus saying, ಬೃನ್ದಮ್ ಬೃನ್ದಮ್ in groups, ತಿಷ್ಠತಾಮ್ standing, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ವಚಃ words, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ಚ also heard.

He saw them gathering in groups, saying, Henceforth we will not be able to see Rama and without him, we are lost indeed.
ದಾನಯಜ್ಞವಿವಾಹೇಷು ಸಮಾಜೇಷು ಮಹತ್ಸು ಚ.

ನ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ ಪುನ ರ್ಜಾತು ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಂ ರಾಮಮನ್ತರಾ৷৷2.57.13৷৷


ದಾನಯಜ್ಞವಿವಾಹೇಷು in acts of charity, sacrifices and weddings, ಮಹತ್ಸು in great, ಸಮಾಜೇಷು ಚ assemblies also, ಅನ್ತರಾ in their midst, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್ righteous, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪುನಃ again, ಜಾತು ever, ನ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ will not see.

No longer will we see Rama at sacrifices, weddings, great assemblies and at places of charitable activity.
ಕಿಂ ಸಮರ್ಥಂ ಜನಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಕಿಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕಿಂ ಸುಖಾವಹಮ್.

ಇತಿ ರಾಮೇಣ ನಗರಂ ಪಿತೃವತ್ಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಮ್৷৷2.57.14৷৷


ಅಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ to these people, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಸಮರ್ಥಮ್ is meaningful, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleases, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಸುಖಾವಹಮ್ brings happiness, ಇತಿ in this way, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ನಗರಮ್ this city of Ayodhya, ಪಿತೃವತ್ like father, ಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಮ್ looked after.

Rama looked after his people like a father always thinking what was good for them, dear to them and comfortable to them.
ವಾತಾಯನಗತಾನಾಂ ಚ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮನ್ವನ್ತರಾಪಣಮ್.

ರಾಮಶೋಕಾಭಿತಪ್ತಾನಾಂ ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ಪರಿದೇವನಮ್৷৷2.57.15৷৷


ವಾತಾಯನಗತಾನಾಮ್ looking through the windows, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ women's, ಅನ್ವನ್ತರಾಪಣಮ್ in the stalls, ರಾಮಶೋಕಾಭಿತಪ್ತಾನಾಮ್ burning with sorrow due to Rama's exile, ಪರಿದೇವನಮ್ bewailings, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ heard.

(He) heard wailings of women looking through the window and of the people in market-places burning with sorrow over Rama's exile.
ಸ ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಮಧ್ಯೇನ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ ಪಿಹಿತಾನನಃ.

ಯತ್ರ ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ತದೇವೋಪಯಯೌ ಗೃಹಮ್৷৷2.57.16৷৷


ಸಃ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ that Sumantra, ಪಿಹಿತಾನನಃ with his face muffled, ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಮಧ್ಯೇನ along the highway, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಃ king Dasaratha, ಯತ್ರ where, ತತ್ that, ಗೃಹಮ್ house, ಉಪಯಯೌ reached straight.

Sumantra with his face muffled, drove along the highway straight to the palace of king Dasaratha.
ಸೋವತೀರ್ಯ ರಥಾಚ್ಛೀಘ್ರಂ ರಾಜವೇಶ್ಮ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಚ.

ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸಪ್ತಾಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ ಮಹಾಜನಸಮಾಕುಲಾಃ৷৷2.57.17৷৷


ಸಃ that, ರಥಾತ್ from the chariot, ಅವತೀರ್ಯ alighting, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ರಾಜವೇಶ್ಮ king's palace, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಚ having entered, ಮಹಾಜನಸಮಾಕುಲಾಃ overcrowded with people, ಸಪ್ತ seven, ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಃ courtyards, ಅಭಿಕ್ರಾಮ crossed.

Quickly alighting from the chariot, he entered the king's palace and crossed the seven courtyards overcrowded with people.
ಹರ್ಮ್ಯೈ ರ್ವಿಮಾನೈಃ ಪ್ರಾಸಾದೈರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಥ ಸಮಾಗತಮ್.

ಹಾಹಾಕಾರಕೃತಾ ನಾರ್ಯೋ ರಾಮದರ್ಶನಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ৷৷2.57.18৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ನಾರ್ಯಃ women, ಹರ್ಮ್ಯೈಃ from mansions, ವಿಮಾನೈಃ from seven-storied buildings, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದೈಃ from royal palaces, ಸಮಾಗತಮ್ arrived, ಆವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ರಾಮದರ್ಶನ ಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ sad at not seeing Rama, ಹಾಹಾಕಾರಕೃತಾಃ cried out 'Alas, Alas!'.

Women from mansions, seven-storied buildings and from royal palaces, sighted him and pained at not seeing Rama cried out 'Alas, Alas!'.
ಆಯತೈರ್ವಿಮಲೈರ್ನೇತ್ರೈರಶ್ರುವೇಗಪರಿಪ್ಲುತೈಃ.

ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಮಭಿವೀಕ್ಷನ್ತೇವ್ಯಕ್ತಮಾರ್ತತರಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.57.19৷৷


ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಆರ್ತತರಾಃ in greater anguish,ಆಯತೈಃ large,ವಿಮಲೈಃclean, ಅಶ್ರುವೇಗಪರಿಪ್ಲುತೈಃ flooded with the force of tears, ನೇತ್ರೈಃ with eyes, ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ silently ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಮ್ one another, ಅಭಿವೀಕ್ಷನ್ತೇ were looking.

The women in great anguish stood silently looking at one another, their large eyes
flooded with overflowing tears.
ತತೋ ದಶರಥಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಸಾದೇಭ್ಯ ಸ್ತತ ಸ್ತತಃ.

ರಾಮಶೋಕಾಭಿತಪ್ತಾನಾಂ ಮನ್ದಂ ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ಜಲ್ಪಿತಮ್৷৷2.57.20৷৷


ತತಃ then, ತತಸ್ತತಃ here and there, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದ್ಯೇಭ್ಯಃ from palaces, ರಾಮಶೋಕಾಭಿತಪ್ತಾನಾಮ್ afflicted with
sorrow due to Rama's exile, ದಶರಥಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ of the wives of Dasaratha, ಮನ್ದಮ್ ಜಲ್ಪಿತಮ್ whispers, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ heard.

From different spots in the palace, Sumantra heard the sobs and whispers of Dasaratha's wives who were tormented with the sorrow of Rama's exile.
ಸಹ ರಾಮೇಣ ನಿರ್ಯಾತೋ ವಿನಾ ರಾಮ ಮಿಹಾಗತಃ.

ಸೂತಃ ಕಿನ್ನಾಮ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಶೋಚನ್ತೀಂ ಪ್ರತಿವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.57.21৷৷


ರಾಮೇಣ ಸಹ with Rama, ನಿರ್ಯಾತಃ went out, ವಿನಾ ರಾಮಮ್ without Rama, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಃ returned, ಸೂತಃ charioteer, ಶೋಚನ್ತೀಮ್ worrying, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ Kausalya, ಕಿಂ ನಾಮ what can, ಪ್ರತಿವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ will he say?

The charioteer left with Rama and returned without him. What can he say to the wailing Kausalya?
ಯಥಾ ಚ ಮನ್ಯೇ ದುರ್ಜೀವಮೇವಂ ನ ಸುಕರಂ ಧ್ರುವಮ್.

ಆಚ್ಛಿದ್ಯ ಪುತ್ರೇ ನಿರ್ಯಾತೇ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಯತ್ರ ಜೀವತಿ৷৷2.57.22৷৷


ಪುತ್ರೇ when the son, ಆಚ್ಛಿದ್ಯ severing all connections, ನಿರ್ಯಾತೇ had set out, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಯಥಾ in whichever way, ಯತ್ರ ಜೀವತಿ wherever surviving still, ದುರ್ಜೀವಮ್ it is difficult to live, ಮನ್ಯೇ I consider, ಏವಮ್ like this, ಸುಕರಮ್ easily, ನ not, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ certain.

I think it is indeed difficult for Kausalya to live wherever and whichever way she tries as she has been separated from her son. (the queens said).
ಸತ್ಯರೂಪಂ ತು ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ರಾಜ್ಞ: ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ನಿಶಾಮಯನ್.

ಪ್ರದೀಪ್ತಮಿವ ಶೋಕೇನ ವಿವೇಶ ಸಹಸಾ ಗೃಹಮ್৷৷2.57.23৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞ: king's, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ wives, ಸತ್ಯರೂಪಮ್ truth embodied, ತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ that word, ನಿಶಾಮಯನ್ listening, ಸಹಸಾ immediately, ಶೋಕೇನ with grief, ಪ್ರದೀಪ್ತಮಿವ as if burning, ಗೃಹಮ್ house, ವಿವೇಶ entered.

Listening to the correct words of the king's wives, he immediately entered the palace as if in flames (of grief).
ಸ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯಾಷ್ಟಮೀಂ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಂ ರಾಜಾನಂ ದೀನಮಾತುರಮ್.

ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಪರಿಮ್ಲಾನಮಪಶ್ಯತ್ಪಾಣ್ಡುರೇ ಗೃಹೇ৷৷2.57.24৷৷


ಸಃ he (Sumantra), ಅಷ್ಟಮೀಮ್ eighth, ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ್ courtyard, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರೇ in pale white, ಗೃಹೇ chamber, ದೀನಮ್ desolate, ಆತುರಮ್ anguished, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಪರಿಮ್ಲಾನಮ್ withered by sorrow over his son, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ saw.

On entering the eighth courtyard, he saw in a pale white chamber king Dasaratha desolate, anguished and withered with the sorrow of separation from his son.
ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ ತಮಾಸೀನಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇ ಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಚ.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋ ರಾಮವಚನಂ ಯಥೋಕ್ತಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯವೇದಯತ್৷৷2.57.25৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ಅಸೀನಮ್ seated, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಮ್ king, ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ having approached, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ paying obeisance, ರಾಮವಚನಮ್ Rama's words, ಯದೋಕ್ತಮ್ verbatim, ಪ್ರತ್ಯವೇದಯತ್ conveyed.

Sumantra approached the king who was seated, paid obeisance to him and conveyed Rama's words verbatim.
ಸ ತೂಷ್ಣೀಮೇವ ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಾ ವಿಭ್ರಾನ್ತಚೇತನಃ.

ಮೂರ್ಛಿತೋ ನ್ಯಪತದ್ಭೂಮೌ ರಾಮಶೋಕಾಭಿಪೀಡಿತಃ৷৷2.57.26৷৷


ಸಃ that, ರಾಜಾ king, ತೂಷ್ಣೀಮೇವ silently, ತತ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having listened, ವಿಭ್ರಾನ್ತಚೇತನಃ with a bewildered mind, ರಾಮಶೋಕಾಭಿಪೀಡಿತಃ tormented by the grief due to Rama's absence, ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ with senses lost, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ನ್ಯಪತತ್ fell.

The king silently listened to Rama's message. Bewildered and tormented by the grief of Rama's absence, he fell down on the ground in a swoon.
ತತೋನ್ತಃಪುರಮಾವಿದ್ಧಂ ಮೂರ್ಛಿತೇ ಪೃಥಿವೀಪತೌ.

ಉದ್ಧೃತ್ಯ ಬಾಹೂ ಚುಕ್ರೋಶ ನೃಪತೌ ಪತಿತೇಕ್ಷಿತೌ৷৷2.57.27৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಪೃಥಿವೀಪತೌ when lord of the earth (the king), ಮೂರ್ಛಿತೇ had fallen unconscious, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ inner apartment, ಆವಿದ್ಧಮ್ broken down, ನೃಪತೌ king, ಕ್ಷಿತೌ on the ground, ಪತಿತೇ had fallen, ಬಾಹೂ arms, ಉದ್ಧೃತ್ಯ having raised, ಚುಕ್ರೋಶ cried loudly.

The moment the lord of the earth fell down on the ground unconscious, the women in the inner apartment burst into tears, raising their arms.
ಸುಮಿತ್ರಯಾ ತು ಸಹಿತಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಪತಿತಂ ಪತಿಮ್.

ಉತ್ಥಾಪಯಾಮಾಸ ತದಾ ವಚನಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.57.28৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಯಾ ಸಹಿತಾ together with Sumitra, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಪತಿತಮ್ fallen on the ground, ಪತಿಮ್ husband, ಉತ್ಥಾಪಯಾಮಾಸ lifted him up, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Having seen her husband collapsed on the ground, Kausalya assisted by Sumitra lifted him up and said to him thus:
ಇಮಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾಭಾಗ! ದೂತಂ ದುಷ್ಕರಕಾರಿಣಃ.

ವನವಾಸಾದನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಕಸ್ಮಾನ್ನ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಷಸೇ৷৷2.57.29৷৷


ಮಹಾಭಾಗ! O distinguished one, ವನವಾಸಾತ್ from the forest, ಅನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ returned, ದುಷ್ಕರಕಾರಿಣಃ
one who had accomplished arduous tasks, ತಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಇಮಮ್ this, ದೂತಮ್ messenger, ಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ why, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಷಸೇ are not talking.

O distinguished king!, why are you not enquiring from the messenger about him (Rama) who is capable of performing arduous tasks?
ಅದ್ಯೈವಮನಯಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ವ್ಯಪತ್ರಪಸಿ ರಾಘವ!.

ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಸುಕೃತಂ ತೇಸ್ತು ಶೋಕೇ ನಸ್ಯಾ ತ್ಸಹಾಯತಾ৷৷2.57.30৷৷


ರಾಘವ O descendant of the Raghus!, ಅನಯಮ್ injustice, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having done, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ವ್ಯಪತ್ರಪಸಿ are feeling ashamed, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ rise, ತೇ to you, ಸುಕೃತಮ್ the merit (of having fullfilled your word), ಅಸ್ತು obtained, ಶೋಕೇ in this sorrow, ಸಹಾಯತಾ help, ನ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ will not get.

O descendant of the Raghus! are you ashamed of having done an injustice? Arise. you may be a blessed one (for fulfilling your promise). If you grieve, none will help you.
ದೇವ! ಯಸ್ಯಾ ಭಯಾದ್ರಾಮಂ ನಾನುಪೃಚ್ಛಸಿ ಸಾರಥಿಮ್.

ನೇಹ ತಿಷ್ಠಿತಿ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ವಿಸ್ರಬ್ಧಂ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಷ್ಯತಾಮ್৷৷2.57.31৷৷


ದೇವ O king, ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ by whose, ಭಯಾತ್ from fear, ಸಾರಥಿಮ್ charioteer, ರಾಮಮ್ about Rama, ನಾನುಪೃಚ್ಛಸಿ you are not enquiring, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಇಹ now, ನ ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ not here, ವಿಸ್ರಬ್ಧಮ್ without fear, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಷ್ಯತಾಮ್ you may speak.

Kaikeyi for fear of whom you dare not ask the charioteer about Rama, O king! is not here. You may speak to him without fear.
ಸಾ ತಥೋಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾರಾಜಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಶೋಕಲಾಲಸಾ.

ಧರಣ್ಯಾಂ ನಿಪಪಾತಾಶು ಬಾಷ್ಪವಿಪ್ಲುತಭಾಷಿಣೀ৷৷2.57.32৷৷


ಬಾಷ್ಪವಿಪ್ಲುತಭಾಷಿಣೀ speaking with a voice choked with tears, ಶೋಕಲಾಲಸಾ absorbed in grief, ಸಾ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ that Kausalya, ಮಹಾರಾಜಮ್ to the maharaja, ತಥಾ that way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಆಶು suddenly, ಧರಣ್ಯಾಮ್ on the ground, ನಿಪಪಾತ fell down.

Absorbed in grief, Kausalya spoke to the maharaja in a voice choked with tears and then collapsed on the floor.
ಏವಂ ವಿಲಪತೀಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಪತಿತಾಂ ಭುವಿ.

ಪತಿಂ ಚಾವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ಸುಸ್ವರಂ ರುರುದುಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.57.33৷৷


ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ those women, ಏವಮ್ thus, ವಿಲಪತೀಮ್ lamenting, ಭುವಿ ಪತಿತಾಮ್ fallen on the ground, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ Kausalya, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪತಿಂ ಚ also their husband, ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಸುಸ್ವರಮ್ in chorus, ರುರುದುಃ wailed loudlly.

All those women saw weeping Kausalya as well as their husband fallen on the ground and wailed loudly in a chorus.
ತತ ಸ್ತಮನ್ತಃಪುರನಾದಮುತ್ಥಿತಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ವೃದ್ಧಾ ಸ್ತರುಣಾಶ್ಚ ಮಾನವಾಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವಾ ರುರುದು ಸ್ಸಮನ್ತತಃ ಪುರಂ ತದಾಸೀತ್ಪುನರೇವ ಸಙ್ಕುಲಮ್৷৷2.57.34৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಉತ್ಥಿತಮ್ rising, ತಮ್ that, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರನಾದಮ್ sound from the inner apartment, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಯ having seen, ವೃದ್ಧಾ: old, ತರುಣಾಶ್ಚ young, ಮಾನವಾಃ people, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯಶ್ಚ also women, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ all around, ರುರುದುಃ lamented, ತದಾ then, ಪುರಮ್ city, ಪುನರೇವ again, ಸಙ್ಕುಲಮ್ ಆಸೀತ್ was filled (with people).

Having heard the sound emanating from the inner apartment, people, old, young and women, of the city lamented. The city was crowded again.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತಪಞ್ಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyseventh sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
