[Sumantra conveys the message of Rama to the wailing king and Kausalya.]

ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಶ್ವಸ್ತೋ ಯದಾ ರಾಜಾ ಮೋಹಾತ್ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಗತಂ ಪುನಃ.

ಅಥಾಜುಹಾವ ತಂ ಸೂತಂ ರಾಮವೃತ್ತಾನ್ತಕಾರಣಾತ್৷৷2.58.1৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ರಾಜಾ king, ಯದಾ when, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಶ್ವಸ್ತಃ consoled, ಮೋಹಾತ್ from loss of
consciousness, ಪುನಃ again, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಗತಮ್ having regained his senses, ರಾಮವೃತ್ತಾನ್ತ ಕಾರಣಾತ್ due to the news about Rama, ತಂ ಸೂತಮ್ that charioteer, ಆಜುಹಾವ called for him.

When the king regained his consciousness and was consoled, he summoned the charioteer to hear news about Rama.
ಅಥ ಸೂತೋ ಮಹಾರಾಜಂ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿರುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ರಾಮಮೇವಾನುಶೋಚನ್ತಂ ದುಃಖಶೋಕಸಮನ್ವಿತಮ್৷৷2.58.2৷৷

ವೃದ್ಧಂ ಪರಮಸನ್ತಪ್ತಂ ನವಗ್ರಹಮಿವ ದ್ವಿಪಮ್.

ವಿನಿಶ್ವಸನ್ತಂ ಧ್ಯಾಯನ್ತಮಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಮಿವ ಕುಙಞರಮ್৷৷2.58.3৷৷


ಅಥ then, ಸೂತಃ the charioteer, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ರಾಮಮೇವ Rama alone, ಅನುಶೋಚನ್ತಮ್ thinking of Rama, ದುಃಖಶೋಕಸಮನ್ವಿತಮ್ by grief and sorrow, ವೃದ್ಧಮ್ aged, ಪರಮಸನ್ತಪ್ತಮ್ deeply afflicted, ನವಗ್ರಹಮ್ newly-captured, ದ್ವಿಪಮಿವ like an elephant, ವಿನಿಃಶ್ವಸನ್ತಮ್ heaving deep sighs, ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥಮ್ indisposed, ಕುಞ್ಜರಮಿವ like an elephant, ಧ್ಯಾಯನ್ತಮ್ brooding, ಮಹಾರಾಜಮ್ king, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ approached.

Then the charioteer with folded palms approached the king who, deeply afflicted with grief and pain, was brooding over Rama alone. Aged Dasaratha was heaving deep sighs like a newly-captured, indisposed elephant.
ರಾಜಾ ತು ರಜಸಾ ಸೂತಂ ಧ್ವಸ್ತಾಙ್ಗಂ ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್.

ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಂ ದೀನಮುವಾಚ ಪರಮಾರ್ತವತ್৷৷2.58.4৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ರಜಸಾ with dust, ಧ್ವಸ್ತಾಙ್ಗಮ್ covered all over, ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಮ್ face bathed in tears, ದೀನಮ್ dejected, ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing nearby, ಸೂತಮ್ charioteer, ಪರಮಾರ್ತವತ್ filled with extreme grief, ಉವಾಚ said.

Seeing the dejected charioteer standing before him, the desolate king covered all over with dust and his face bathed in tears, said to him in extreme grief:
ಕ್ವನು ವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ವೃಕ್ಷಮೂಲಮುಪಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.

ಸೋತ್ಯನ್ತಸುಖಿತ ಸ್ಸೂತ! ಕಿಮಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.58.5৷৷


ಸೂತ the charioteer, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous (Rama), ವೃಕ್ಷಮೂಲಮ್ foot of the tree, ಉಪಾಶ್ರಿತಃ having taken refuge, ಕ್ವನು where, ವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ will he live?, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತ ಸುಖಿತಃ enjoyed supreme luxury, ಸ: ರಾಘವಃ that Rama, ಕಿಮ್ what?, ಅಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ will he eat?

O charioteer! Rama is rightous and he is acustoomed to all sorts of comfort. Taking refuge at the foot of a tree how shall he live and what shall he eat?
ದುಃಖಸ್ಯಾನುಚಿತೋ ದುಃಖಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ ಶಯನೋಚಿತಃ.

ಭೂಮಿಪಾಲಾತ್ಮಜೋ ಭೂಮೌ ಶೇತೇ ಕಥಮನಾಥವತ್৷৷2.58.6৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ Sumantra, ದುಃಖಸ್ಯ to sorrow, ಅನುಚಿತಃ not deserving, ಶಯನೋಚಿತಃ accustomed to comfortable couches, ಭೂಮಿಪಾಲಾತ್ಮಜಃ son of the guardian of the earth (prince Rama), ಅನಾಥವತ್ like an orphan, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ದುಃಖಮ್ sadly, ಕಥಮ್ how?, ಶೇತೇ can lie down?

How can the son of the guardian of the earth who is accustomed to a comfortable bed and not to undeserved suffering lie down on the ground like an orphan, O Sumantra!
ಯಂ ಯಾನ್ತಮನುಯಾನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಪದಾತಿರಥಕುಞ್ಜರಾಃ.

ಸ ವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ ಕಥಂ ರಾಮೋ ವಿಜನಂ ವನ ಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ৷৷2.58.7৷৷


ಯಾನ್ತಮ್ when he went out, ಯಮ್ whom, ಪದಾತಿರಥಕುಞ್ಜರಾ: foot-soldiers, chariots and elephants, ಅನುಯಾನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ followed, ಸಃ that, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವಿಜನಮ್ desolate, ವನಮ್ forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ having taken shelter, ಕಥಮ್ how, ವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ can live.

Wherever Rama went, elephants, chariots and foot-soldiers followed him. How can he (now) live in the desolate forest where he has taken refuge?
ವ್ಯಾಲೈರ್ಮೃಗೈರಾಚರಿತಂ ಕೃಷ್ಣಸರ್ಪನಿಷೇವಿತಮ್.

ಕಥಂ ಕುಮಾರೌ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ವನ ಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತೌ৷৷2.58.8৷৷


ಕುಮಾರೌ the two youths (Rama and Lakshmana), ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ with Vaidehi also, ವ್ಯಾಲೈಃ by wicked wild elephants, ಮೃಗೈಃ animals, ಆಚರಿತಮ್ ranging about, ಕೃಷ್ಣಸರ್ಪನಿಷೇವಿತಮ್ abounding in black cobras, ವನಮ್ forest, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತೌ exist.

How can the two young men along with Vaidehi live in the forest infested with black cobras and wicked, wild animals?
ಸುಕುಮಾರ್ಯಾ ತಪಸ್ವಿನ್ಯಾ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ.

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೌ ಕಥಂ ಪಾದೈರವರುಹ್ಯ ರಥಾದ್ಗತೌ৷৷2.58.9৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ Sumantra, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೌ king's sons, ಸುಕುಮಾರ್ಯಾ along with delicate, ತಪಸ್ವಿನ್ಯಾ by the pitiable, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ರಥಾತ್ from the chariot, ಪಾದೈಃ on foot, ಅವರುಹ್ಯ alighting, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಗತೌ did they go.

O Sumantra! how did those two princes along with pitiable, delicate Sita, alight from the chariot, and enter the forest on foot?
ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಃ ಖಲು ಸೂತ! ತ್ವಂ ಯೇನ ದೃಷ್ಟೌ ಮಮಾತ್ಮಜೌ.

ವನಾನ್ತಂ ಪ್ರವಿಶನ್ತೌ ತಾವಶ್ವಿನಾವಿವಮನ್ದರಮ್৷৷2.58.10৷৷


ಸೂತ O charioteer, ಯೇನ by you, ಅಶ್ವಿನೌ Aswinis, ಮನ್ದರಮ್ ಇವ like Mandara mountain, ವನಾನ್ತಮ್ on the outskirts of the forest, ಪ್ರವಿಶನ್ತೌ entering, ಮಮ my, ಆತ್ಮಜೌ sons, ದೃಷ್ಟೌ have been seen, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಃ ಖಲು are blessed indeed.

You are blessed indeed, O charioteer! to have seen my sons entering the outskirts of the forest like Aswinis stepping into the region of the Mandara mountain.
ಕಿಮುವಾಚ ವಚೋ ರಾಮಃ ಕಿಮುವಾಚ ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! ವನಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಕಿಮುವಾಚ ಚ ಮೈಥಿಲೀ৷৷2.58.11৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! Sumantra, ವನಮ್ forest, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ on reaching, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಕಿಮ್ what?, ವಚಃ words, ಉವಾಚ did speak, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಉವಾಚ did say, ಮೈಥಿಲೀ ಚ and Sita, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಉವಾಚ did say.

Upon reaching the forest, O Sumantra! what did Rama, Lakshmana and Sita say?
ಆಸಿತಂ ಶಯಿತಂ ಭುಕ್ತಂ ಸೂತ! ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಕೀರ್ತಯ.

ಜೀವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಹಮೇತೇನ ಯಯಾತಿರಿವ ಸಾಧುಷು৷৷2.58.12৷৷


ಸೂತ! charioteer, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಆಸಿತಮ್ seat, ಶಯಿತಮ್ bed, ಭುಕ್ತಮ್ food, ಕೀರ್ತಯ describe, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಯಯಾತಿಃ Yayati, ಸಾಧುಷು ಇವ as in the company of saints, ಏತೇನ with this, ಜೀವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall live.

Tell me, O charioteer! where Rama sat, where he slept, what (food) he ate. Only your words will enable me to live like Yayati among saints.
ಇತಿ ಸೂತೋ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ ಬೋಧಿತ ಸ್ಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ.

ಉವಾಚ ವಾಚಾ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಸ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರಿಬದ್ಧಯಾ৷৷2.58.13৷৷


ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by the king, Dasaratha, ಇತಿ in this way, ಬೋಧಿತಃ questioned, ಸಃ ಸೂತಃ that charioteer, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರಿಬದ್ಧಯಾ with voice choked with tears, ಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ faltering with grief, ವಾಚಾ with words, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ to the king, ಉವಾಚ said.

Thus questioned by the king the charioteer, his voice choked with tears and words faltering in grief, addressed the king:
ಅಬ್ರವೀನ್ಮಾಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜ! ಧರ್ಮಮೇವಾನುಪಾಲಯನ್.

ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ರಾಘವಃ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಶಿರಸಾಭಿಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.58.14৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜ! O great king, ರಾಘವಃ the descendant of the Raghu race (Rama), ಧರ್ಮಮೇವ righteousness also, ಅನುಪಾಲಯನ್ guarding, ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded hands, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having set, ಶಿರಸಾ bowing his head, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಚ offering salutations, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

With palms folded and head bowed, O great king! Rama offered his salutations to you in confirmity with righteousness and said to me:
ಸೂತ! ಮದ್ವಚನಾತ್ತಸ್ಯ ತಾತಸ್ಯ ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಶಿರಸಾ ವನ್ದನೀಯಸ್ಯ ವನ್ದ್ಯೌ ಪಾದೌ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.58.15৷৷


ಸೂತ! O charioteer, ಮದ್ವಚನಾತ್ as my words, ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನಃ knower of the self, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ illustrious, ವನ್ದನೀಯಸ್ಯ worthy of salutations, ತಸ್ಯ that, ತಾತಸ್ಯ father's, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಶಿರಸಾ head, ವನ್ದ್ಯೌ are worthy of salutations.

'Convey on my behalf, O charioteer! to my illustrious father who is known for his self-knowledge, and is worthy of homage, that I am saluting his feet with my head bowed.
ಸರ್ವಮನ್ತಃಪುರಂ ವಾಚ್ಯಂ ಸೂತ! ಮದ್ವಚನಾತ್ತ್ವಯಾ.

ಆರೋಗ್ಯಮವಿಶೇಷೇಣ ಯಥಾರ್ಹಂ ಚಾಭಿವಾದನಮ್৷৷2.58.16৷৷


ಸೂತ! O charioteer, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಮದ್ವಚನಾತ್ at my words, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ inmates of the inner apartment, ಅವಿಶೇಷೇಣ without distinction, ಆರೋಗ್ಯಮ್ well-being, ಯಥಾರ್ಹಮ್ befitting their status, ಅಭಿವಾದನಂ ಚ salutations, ವಾಚ್ಯಮ್ fit to be conveyed.

'On my behalf convey, O charioteer, without any distinction, my salutations to all the
women befitting their status and tell them I was enquiring about their well-being.
ಮಾತಾ ಚ ಮಮ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಕುಶಲಂ ಚಾಭಿವಾದನಮ್.

ಅಪ್ರಮಾದಂ ಚ ವಕ್ತವ್ಯಾ ಬ್ರೂಯಾಶ್ಚೈನಾಮಿದಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.58.17৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಮಾತಾ mother, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ಅಭಿವಾದನಂ ಚ salutations, ಅಪ್ರಮಾದಂ ಚ alertness, ವಕ್ತವ್ಯಾ is worthy of conveying, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಚಶ್ಚ word, ಬ್ರೂಯಾಃ tell.

'Convey my mother carefully my saluations and my well-being and tell her:
ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಾ ಯಥಾಕಾಲಮಗ್ನ್ಯಗಾರಪರಾ ಭವ.

ದೇವಿ! ದೇವಸ್ಯ ಪಾದೌ ಚ ದೇವವತ್ಪರಿಪಾಲಯ৷৷2.58.18৷৷


ದೇವಿ O mother, ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಾ adhering to the righteous path, ಯಥಾಕಾಲಮ್ in time, ಅಗ್ನ್ಯಗಾರಪರಾ ಭವ perform the rituals in the chamber of sacrificial fire, ದೇವಸ್ಯ (your) lord's (king Dasaratha's), ಪಾದೌ ಚ feet also, ದೇವವತ್ like a god, ಪರಿಪಾಲಯ serve.

'O mother!, adhering to the righteous path and performing in time the rituals in the chamber of sacrificial fire, offer your services at the feet of king Dasaratha as if he were a god.
ಅಭಿಮಾನಂ ಚ ಮಾನಂ ಚ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ವರ್ತಸ್ವ ಮಾತೃಷು.

ಅನು ರಾಜಾನಮಾರ್ಯಾಂ ಚ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮಮ್ಬ ಕಾರಯ৷৷2.58.19৷৷


ಅಭಿಮಾನಂ ಚ egoism, ಮಾನಂ ಚ pride, ಮಾತೃಷು towards mothers, ವರ್ತಸ್ವ conduct yourself, ಅಮ್ಬ O mother, ಆರ್ಯಾಮ್ venerable, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ ಅನು well-disposed towards the king, ಕಾರಯ mould her.

'O mother, conduct yourself with other mothers without pride and egoism. Ensure that venerable Kaikeyi remains well-disposed towards the king.
ಕುಮಾರೇ ಭರತೇ ವೃತ್ತಿರ್ವರ್ತಿತವ್ಯಾ ಚ ರಾಜವತ್.

ಅರ್ಥಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾ ಹಿ ರಾಜಾನೋ ರಾಜಧರ್ಮಮನುಸ್ಮರ৷৷2.58.20৷৷


ಕುಮಾರೇ young, ಭರತೇ towards Bharata, ರಾಜವತ್ like a king, ವೃತ್ತಿ: conduct, ವರ್ತಿತವ್ಯಾ to be followed, ರಾಜಾನಃ kings, ಅರ್ಥಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಃ ಹಿ senior by virtue of their royalty, ರಾಜಧರ್ಮಮ್ prerogative of kings, ಅನುಸ್ಮರ remember.

'Behave towards young Bharata as to a king. Irrespective of age, a king is a king. (Hence should be honoured). You should keep this rajadharma (royal prerogative) in mind.
ಭರತಃ ಕುಶಲಂ ವಾಚ್ಯೋ ವಾಚ್ಯೋ ಮದ್ವಚನೇನ ಚ.

ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ವೇವ ಯಥಾನ್ಯಾಯಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ವರ್ತಸ್ವ ಮಾತೃಷು৷৷2.58.21৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ವಾಚ್ಯಃ deserves to be told, ಮದ್ವಚನೇನ by my word, ವಾಚ್ಯಃ ಚ is to be told, ಸರ್ವಾಸು among all, ಮಾತೃಷು mothers, ಯಥಾನ್ಯಾಯಮ್ rightly, ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ behaviour, ವರ್ತಸ್ವ follow.

'Tell Bharata of my welfare and tell him on my behalf that he should honour all our mothers equally.
ವಕ್ತವ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುರಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲನನ್ದನಃ.

ಪಿತರಂ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಥೋ ರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಥಮನುಪಾಲಯ৷৷2.58.22৷৷


ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲನನ್ದನಃ delight of the race of Ikshvaku, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ವಕ್ತವ್ಯಶ್ಚ deserves be told this way, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಥಃ crowned as prince regent, ರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಥಮ್ being in the kingdom, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಅನುಪಾಲಯ rule the kingdom (by being obedient to him).

ಅತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತವಯಾ ರಾಜಾ ಮಾಸ್ಮೈನಂ ವ್ಯವರೋರುಧಃ.

ಕುಮಾರ ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ಜೀವ ತ್ವಂ ತಸ್ಯೈವಾಜ್ಞಾಪ್ರವರ್ತನಾತ್৷৷2.58.23৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king Dasaratha, ಅತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತವಯಾಃ is advanced in age, ಏನಮ್ him, ಮಾ ಸ್ಮ ವ್ಯವರೋರುಧಃ do not restrict him, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ತಸ್ಯೈವ that king's, ಆಜ್ಞಾಪ್ರವರ್ತನಾತ್ carrying out the commands, ಕುಮಾರರಾಜ್ಯೇ as prince regent, ಜೀವ live.

'The king is advanced in age. Do not restrict him in any manner. Carry out his orders as prince regent, and live happily'.
ಅಬ್ರವೀಚ್ಚಾಪಿ ಮಾಂ ಭೂಯೋ ಭೃಶಮಶ್ರೂಣಿ ವರ್ತಯನ್.

ಮಾತೇವ ಮಮ ಮಾತಾ ತೇ ದ್ರಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾ ಪುತ್ರಗರ್ಧಿನೀ৷৷2.58.24৷৷


ಭೃಶಮ್ excessively, ಅಶ್ರೂಣಿ tears, ವರ್ತಯನ್ shedding, ಮಾಮ್ addressing me, ಭೂಯಃ more, ಅಬ್ರವೀಚ್ಚಾಪಿ uttered, ಪುತ್ರಗರ್ಧಿನೀ covetous of her son, ಮಮ ಮಾತಾ my mother, ತೇ by you, ಮಾತೇವ as your mother, ದ್ರಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾ worthy of being looked after.

Shedding profuse tears, Rama continued, 'Look after my mother who is covetous of her son as your own mother'.
ಇತ್ಯೇವಂ ಮಾಂ ಮಹರಾಜ! ಬ್ರುವನ್ನೇವ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜೀವತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ಭೃಶಮಶ್ರೂಣ್ಯವರ್ತಯತ್৷৷2.58.25৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜ! O king, ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ renowned, ರಾಜೀವತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ with red lotus-like eyes, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ thus, ಬ್ರುವನ್ನೇವ while saying, ಭೃಶಮ್ copious, ಅಶ್ರೂಣಿ tears, ಅವರ್ತಯತ್ shed.

While saying this the red lotus-like eyes of illustrious Rama streamed with tears, O maharaja!
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ತು ಸುಸಙ್ಕೃದ್ಧೋ ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಕೇನಾಯಮಪರಾಧೇನ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೋ ವಿವಾಸಿತಃ৷৷2.58.26৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ತು Lakshmana, ಸುಸಙ್ಕೃದ್ಧಃ mighty angry, ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ sighing, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಅಯಮ್ this, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ king's son, ಕೇನ by what, ಅಪರಾಧೇನ offence, ವಿವಾಸಿತಃ has been banished?

But Lakshmana, seething with anger and sighing said, 'For what offence has this king's son been banished'?
ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ತು ಖಲು ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಲಘುತ್ವಾಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ ಶಾಸನಮ್.

ಕೃತಂ ಕಾರ್ಯಮಕಾರ್ಯಂ ವಾ ವಯಂ ಯೇನಾಭಿಪೀಡಿತಾಃ৷৷2.58.27৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ತು by the king also, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ of Kaikeyi, ಲಘು trash, ಶಾಸನಮ್ command, ಆಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ having taken refuge, ಅಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ a forbidden act, ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ವಾ or a worthy act, ಕೃತಮ್ has been done, ಯೇನ by which, ವಯಮ್ we, ಅಭಿಪೀಡಿತಾಃ have been made to suffer.

'The king, too, submitting to the trash command of Kaikeyi has perpetrated an act, just or unjust (he knows better), for which we are made to suffer so much.
ಯದಿ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೋ ರಾಮೋ ಲೋಭಕಾರಣಕಾರಿತಮ್.

ವರದಾನನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ವಾ ಸರ್ವಥಾ ದುಷ್ಕೃತಂ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.58.28৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಲೋಭಕಾರಣಕಾರಿತಮ್ out of greed (for the kingdom), ವರದಾನನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ವಾ or on account of the boons bestowed, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಃ ಯದಿ if banished, ಸರ್ವಥಾ by all means, ದುಷ್ಕೃತಮ್ wicked act, ಕೃತಮ್ has been done.

'Whether it was out of greed (for the kingdom) or for (the execution of) the boon bestowed, this act of banishment is by all means wicked'.
ಇದಂ ತಾವದ್ಯಥಾಕಾಮಮೀಶ್ವರಸ್ಯ ಕೃತೇ ಕೃತಮ್.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ತು ಪರಿತ್ಯಾಗೇ ನ ಹೇತು ಮುಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ৷৷2.58.29৷৷


ಇದಂ ತಾವತ್ this one, ಈಶ್ವರಸ್ಯ ಕೃತೇ for (fear of) God, ಯಥಾಕಾಮಮ್ this act, ಕೃತಮ್ done, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪರಿತ್ಯಾಗೇ in abandonment, ಹೇತುಮ್ reason, ನ ಉಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ I do not see.

'Or he might have thought he is the overlord and can do as he likes. (Or, he might have done this for fear of God) Otherwise, I do not see any reason for the abandonment of Rama'.
ಅಸಮೀಕ್ಷಯ ಸಮಾರಬ್ಧಂ ವಿರುದ್ಧಂ ಬುಧ್ದಿಲಾಘವಾತ್.

ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಸಙ್ಕ್ರೋಶಂ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ವಿವಾಸನಮ್৷৷2.58.30৷৷


ಬುದ್ಧಿಲಾಘವಾತ್ out of lack of intelligence, ಅಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ without (proper) consideration, ಸಮಾರಬ್ಧಮ್ commenced, ವಿರುದ್ಧಮ್ contrary (to justice), ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವಿವಾಸನಮ್ banishment,
ಸಙ್ಕ್ರೋಶಮ್ bewailment, ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will produce.

'Unjustly, foolishly and without (proper) consideration Rama has been banished. This will (definitely) cause sorrow'.
ಅಹಂ ತಾವನ್ಮಹಾರಾಜೇ ಪಿತೃತ್ವಂ ನೋಪಲಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ.

ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಭರ್ತಾ ಚ ಬನ್ಧುಶ್ಚ ಪಿತಾ ಚ ಮಮ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.58.31৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮಹಾರಾಜೇ in that great king, ಪಿತೃತ್ವಮ್ fatherhood, ನೋಪಲಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ I do not see, ಮಮ to me, ರಾಘವಃ Rama alone, ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಚ brother, ಭರ್ತಾಚ also protector, ಬನ್ಧುಶ್ಚ friend, ಪಿತಾ father.

'I do not regard the great king as my father. Rama alone is my brother, protector, friend and father.
ಸರ್ವರ್ಲೋಕಪ್ರಿಯಂ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಹಿತೇ ರತಮ್.

ಸರ್ವಲೋಕೋನುರಜ್ಯೇತ ಕಥಂ ತ್ವಾನೇನಕರ್ಮಣಾ৷৷2.58.32৷৷


ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved to all, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಹಿತೇ in the welfare of all, ರತಮ್ devoted, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ after deserting, ಅನೇನ ಕರ್ಮಣಾ with this act, ತ್ವಾ towards you, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಃ entire world, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಅನುರಜ್ಯೇತ will be pleased?

'How can anyone in this world be pleased with you for deserting Rama, the beloved of all, and ever devoted to their welfare?
ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಜಾಭಿರಾಮಂ ಹಿ ರಾಮಂ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜ್ಯ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್.

ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಂ ವಿರುಧ್ಯೇಮಂ ಕಥಂ ರಾಜಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.58.33৷৷


ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಜಾಭಿರಾಮಮ್ Delight of all subjects, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್ righteous, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜ್ಯ having used banishment, ಇಮಮ್ this, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಮ್ entire world, ವಿರುಧ್ಯ antagonizing, ರಾಜಾ king, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ will continue to rule?

'Having banished the righteous Rama, the delight of all subjects and, thereby,
antagonizing the entire world, how can you claim to be their king?'
ಜಾನಕೀ ತು ಮಹಾರಾಜ! ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ತೀ ಮನಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ಭೂತೋಪಹತಚಿತ್ತೇವ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾ ವಿಸ್ಮೃತಾ ಸ್ಮಿತಾ৷৷2.58.34৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜ! O great king, ಮನಸ್ವಿನೀ sensitive lady, ಜಾನಕೀ ತು Janaki, ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ತೀ heaving sighs, ಭೂತೋಪಹತಚಿತ್ತೇವ like one possessed, ವಿಸ್ಮೃತಾ ಸ್ಮಿತಾ like one unconcerned with the surroundings and yet smiling, ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾ stood stupefied.

O great king! as for that sensitive Janaki, she stood sighing, stupefied and oblivious (of the past), yet smiling as though her mind was possessed by an evil spirit.
ಅದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವವ್ಯಸನಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಪುತ್ರೀ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ತೇನ ದುಃಖೇನ ರುದತೀ ನೈವ ಮಾಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.58.35৷৷


ಅದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವವ್ಯಸನಾ who had never experienced adversity, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ celebrated, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೀ that princess, ತೇನ that, ದುಃಖೇನ with sorrow, ರುದತೀ weeping, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ even a little, ನೈವ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ did not at all say.

That glorious princess Sita who had never experienced any adversity earlier, weeping with sorrow, could not even speak to me anything.
ಉದ್ವೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಾ ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಮುಖೇನ ಪರಿಶುಷ್ಯತಾ.

ಮುಮೋಚ ಸಹಸಾ ಬಾಷ್ಪಂ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತಮುದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಾ৷৷2.58.36৷৷


ಸಾ she, ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತಮ್ moving, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಉದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಪರಿಶುಷ್ಯತಾ with dried-up, ಮುಖೇನ face, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ husband, ಉದ್ವೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಾ beholding, ಸಹಸಾ suddenly, ಬಾಷ್ಪಮ್ tears, ಮುಮೋಚ shed.

When she saw me leaving, she looked at her husband with a dry (pale) face and suddenly burst into tears.
ತಥೈವ ರಾಮೋಶ್ರುಮುಖಃ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ ಸ್ಥಿತೋಭವಲ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಬಾಹುಪಾಲಿತಃ.

ತಥೈವ ಸೀತಾ ರುದತೀ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷತೇ ರಾಜರಥಂ ತಥೈವ ಮಾಮ್৷৷2.58.37৷৷


ತಥೈವ thus, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅಶ್ರುಮುಖಃ with his face filled with tears, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded hands, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಬಾಹುಪಾಲಿತಃ supported by the arms of Lakshmana, ಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಅಭವತ್ stood, ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ pitiable, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ರುದತೀ weeping, ರಾಜರಥಮ್ king's chariot, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷತೇ kept gazing.

Supported by Lakshmana's arms, Rama stood, his face streaming with tears and palms folded, while the wretched Sita, glaring at me and the royal chariot, weeping.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟಪಞ್ಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyeighth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
