ತತಃ thereafter, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಭೂತೋಪಸೃಷ್ಟೇವ as if possessed by an evil spirit, ವೇಪಮಾನಾ trembling, ಗತಸತ್ತ್ವೇವ like one who has his senses lost, ಪುನಃ ಪುನಃ again and again, ಧರಣ್ಯಾಮ್ on the floor, ಸೂತಮ್ to the charioteer (Sumantra), ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
Thereafter Kausalya, trembling as if possessed by an evil spirit and rolling on the floor like one who her senses now and again, said to the charioteer (Sumantra):
ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ Rama, ಸೀತಾ ಚ Sita, ಯತ್ರ wherever, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಯತ್ರ wherever, ತತ್ರ there, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ನಯ take, ತಾನ್ ವಿನಾ without them, ಅತ್ರ here, ಕ್ಷಣಮಪಿ even for a moment, ಜೀವಿತುಮ್ to live, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ಉತ್ಸಹೇ do not wish.
Take me where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are. I do not wish to live even for a moment without them.
ನಿವರ್ತಯ ರಥಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ನಯ ಮಾಮಪಿ.
ಅಥ ತಾನ್ನಾನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯಮಕ್ಷಯಮ್৷৷2.60.3৷৷
ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ನಿವರ್ತಯ turn back, ಮಾಮಪಿ me also, ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ to Dandaka, ನಯ take, ಅಥ if, ತಾನ್ them, ನಾನು ಗಚ್ಛಾಮಿ if I do not follow, ಯಮಕ್ಷಯಮ್ to the world of Yama, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall go.
'Turn back your chariot immediately and take me to the Dandaka forest. If I do not follow them, I shall enter the world of Yama'.
ಸಃ ಸೂತಃ that charioteer, ಬಾಷ್ಪವೇಗೋಪಹತಯಾ prevented by fast-flowing tears, ಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ faltering, ವಾಚಾ with words, ದೇವೀಮ್ to Kausalya, ಆಶ್ವಸಯನ್ consoling, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
With folded hands and faltering words choked by his fast-flowing tears the charioteer tried to console Kausalya:
ತ್ಯಜ ಶೋಕಂ ಚ ಮೋಹಂ ಚ ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಮಂ ದುಃಖಜಂ ತಥಾ.
ವ್ಯವಧೂಯ ಚ ಸನ್ತಾಪಂ ವನೇ ವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.60.5৷৷
ಶೋಕಮ್ grief, ಮೋಹಮ್ delusion, ತಥಾ also, ದುಃಖಜಮ್ arising out of sorrow, ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಮಂ ಚ despair, ತ್ಯಜ abandon, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಸನ್ತಾಪಮ್ difficulties, ವ್ಯವಧೂಯ after brushig aside, ವನೇ in the forest, ವತ್ಸ್ಯತಿ is going to live.
Abandon your tears, delusion and despair arising out of sorrow. Rama is going to live in the forest, brushing aside all agony.
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪಾದೌ ಪರಿಚರನ್ವನೇ.
ಆರಾಧಯತಿ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ ಪರಲೋಕಂ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.60.6৷৷
ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ: knower of duty, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚಾಪಿ also Lakshmana, ವನೇ in the forest, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ one whose senses are controlled, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ to Rama' s, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಪರಿಚರನ್ serving at, ಪರಲೋಕಮ್ the other world, ಆರಾಧಯತಿ is accomplishing.
Self-controlled Lakshmana, aware of his duty, serves Rama in the forest. By this he is securing his next world.
ವಿಜನೇಪಿ ವನೇ ಸೀತಾ ವಾಸಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಗೃಹೇಷ್ವಿವ.
ವಿಸ್ರಮ್ಭಂ ಲಭತೇಭೀತಾ ರಾಮೇ ಸನ್ನ್ಯಸ್ತಮಾನಸಾ৷৷2.60.7৷৷
ಸೀತಾ Sita, ವಿಜನೇ in the desolate, ವನೇಪಿ in the forest also, ಗೃಹೇಷ್ವಿವ like at home, ವಾಸಮ್ living, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having obtained, ರಾಮೇ in Rama, ಸನ್ನ್ಯಸ್ತಮಾನಸಾ with her mind fixed, ಅಭೀತಾ without fear, ವಿಸ್ರಮ್ಭಮ್ confidence, ಲಭತೇ is getting.
Sita with her mind fixed on Rama is living confidently in that desolate forest without any fear as if it were her home.
ನಾಸ್ಯಾ ದೈನ್ಯಂ ಕೃತಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಸುಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಮಪಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ.
ಉಚಿತೇವ ಪ್ರವಾಸಾನಾಂ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಮಾ৷৷2.60.8৷৷
ಅಸ್ಯಾಃ of her, ಸುಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಮಪಿ even the slightest, ದೈನ್ಯಮ್ dejection, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ not even a little, ಕೃತಮ್ done, ನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ not to be seen, ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ಪ್ರವಾಸಾನಾಮ್ for staying away from home, ಉಚಿತೇವ as if accustomed, ಮಾ to me, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ appears.
I could not see even the slightest depression in Sita as if she was accustomed to staying away from home.
ನಗರೋಪವನಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಯಥಾ ಸ್ಮರಮತೇ ಪುರಾ.
ತಥೈವ ರಮತೇ ಸೀತಾ ನಿರ್ಜನೇಷು ವನೇಷ್ವಪಿ৷৷2.60.9৷৷
ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಪುರಾ earlier, ನಗರೋಪವನಮ್ to the pleasure-gardens of the city, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಯಥಾ as, ರಮತೇಸ್ಮ was enjoying, ನಿರ್ಜನೇಷು in desolate, ವನೇಷ್ವಪಿ even in the forest, ತಥೈವ in the same way, ರಮತೇ enjoying.
Earlier, just as Sita used to revel in the gardens of the city, so does she now in those desolate forests.
ಬಾಲೇವ ರಮತೇ ಸೀತಾಬಾಲಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಾ.
ರಾಮಾ ರಾಮೇ ಹ್ಯಧೀನಾತ್ಮಾ ವಿಜನೇಪಿ ವನೇ ಸತೀ৷৷2.60.10৷৷
ರಾಮಾ charming lady, ರಾಮೇ in Rama, ಅಧೀನಾತ್ಮಾ one with absorbed mind, ಅಬಾಲಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಾ countenance resembling the full Moon, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ವಿಜನೇ desolate, ವನೇ in the forest also, ಸತೀ ಅಪಿ staying, ಬಾಲೇವ like a child, ರಮತೇ is enjoying.
Charming Sita whose face resembles the full Moon, with her mind fixed on Rama, is enjoying even the desolate forest like a child.
ತದ್ಗತಂ ಹೃದಯಂ ಹ್ಯಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತದಧೀನಂ ಚ ಜೀವಿತಮ್.
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಪಿ ಭವೇತ್ತಸ್ಯಾ ರಾಮಹೀನಾ ತದಾ ವನಮ್৷৷2.60.11৷৷
ಅಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ತದ್ಗತಮ್ united with Rama, ಜೀವಿತಂ ಚ life also, ತದಧೀನಮ್ under his control, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಪಿ even Ayodhya too, ರಾಮಹೀನಾ without Rama, ತದಾ then, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ to her, ವನಮ್ forest, ಭವೇತ್ would have become.
Her heart is ever united with Rama, and her life is under his control. Without Rama, even Ayodhya would become a forest for her.
ಪರಿಪೃಚ್ಛತಿ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂಶ್ಚ ನಗರಾಣಿ ಚ.
ಗತಿಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ನದೀನಾಂ ಚ ಪಾದಪಾನ್ವಿವಿಧಾನಪಿ৷৷2.60.12৷৷
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ಕ್ರೋಶಮಾತ್ರೇ at the distance of a krosa from Ayodhya, ವಿಹಾರಮ್ pleasure-garden, ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಾ ಇವ as if sporting, ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂಶ್ಚ villages, ನಗರಾಣಿ ಚ cities,ನದೀನಾಮ್ rivers', ಗತಿಂ ಚ courses, ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ different kinds of, ಪಾದಪಾನಪಿ trees also, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ seeing, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಪರಿಪೃಚ್ಛತಿ enquiring, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ವಾಪಿ or Lakshmana, ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ asking, ಜಾನಾತಿ knowing.
Seeing villages, cities, trees of different kinds and courses of rivers, Sita is enquiring from Rama or Lakshmana about them. She feels as though she is sporting in the pleasure-garden just a krosa from Ayodhya.
ಅಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ಇದಮೇವ this much, ಸ್ಮರಾಮಿ I remember, ಸಹಸೈವ suddenly, ಉಪಜಲ್ಪಿತಮ್ utterance, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಮ್ about Kaikeyi, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಇದಾನೀಮ್ now, ಮಾ to me, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ does not come to my mind.
Sita did say something about Kaikeyi, but now I do not remember what.
ಸೂತಃ charioteer, ಪ್ರಮಾದಾತ್ inadvertently, ಪರ್ಯುಪತ್ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ uttered by all means, ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words relating to Kaikeyi, ಧ್ವಂಸಯಿತ್ವಾ holding back, ದೇವ್ಯಾಃ to Kausalya, ಹ್ಲಾದನಮ್ causing delight, ಮಧುರಮ್ pleasing, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
Diverting the context of what he uttered inadvertently relating to Kaikeyi, the charioteer said pleasing words of consolation to Kausalya.
ಅಧ್ವನಾ ವಾತವೇಗೇನ ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಮೇಣಾತಪೇನ ಚ.
ನ ವಿಗಚ್ಛತಿ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಶ್ಚನ್ದ್ರಾಂಶು ಸದೃಶೀ ಪ್ರಭಾ৷৷2.60.16৷৷
ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ Sita's, ಚನ್ದ್ರಾಂಶು ಸದೃಶೀ resembling the beams of the Moon, ಪ್ರಭಾ lustre, ಅಧ್ವನಾ on the way, ವಾತವೇಗೇನ or by the speed of the wind, ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಮೇಣ or due to haste, ಆತಪೇನ ಚ or due to scorching heat also, ನ ವಿಗಚ್ಛತಿ does not fade.
Just like the beams of the Moon, Sita's glow is not affected by the fatigue of the journey or by the speed of the wind or by the scorching heat.
ಸದೃಶಂ ಶತಪತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರೋಪಮಪ್ರಭಮ್.
ವದನಂ ತದ್ವದಾನ್ಯಾಯಾ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ನ ವಿಕಮ್ಪತೇ৷৷2.60.17৷৷
ವದಾನ್ಯಾಯಾಃ of that munificent, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ Sita, ಶತಪತ್ರಸ್ಯ a hundred-petalled lotus, ಸದೃಶಮ್ similar to, ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರೋಪಮಪ್ರಭಮ್ like the splendour of the full Moon, ತತ್ ವದನಮ್ that countenance, ನ ವಿಕಮ್ಪತೇ does not change at all.
The countenance of Sita with her gentle eloquence resembles a hundred-petalled lotus. She has the luminance of the full Moon that has not wilted.
ಅಲಕ್ತರಸರಕ್ತಾಭಾವಲಕ್ತರಸವರ್ಜಿತೌ.
ಅದ್ಯಾಪಿ ಚರಣೌ ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಪದ್ಮಕೋಶಸಮಪ್ರಭೌ৷৷2.60.18৷৷
ಅಲಕ್ತರಸಕ್ತಾಭೌ shining red like the liquid lac, ಅಲಕ್ತರಸವರ್ಜಿತೌ no longer tinted with such liquid, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಅದ್ಯಾಪಿ even now, ಪದ್ಮಕೋಶಸಮಪ್ರಭೌ are shining like the lotus buds.
Her feet, now devoid of lac-dye, still look red like lac and shine like the lotus bud.
ನೂಪುರೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟಹೇಲೇವ ಖೇಲಂ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ಭಾಮಿನೀ.
ಇದಾನೀಮಪಿ ವೈದೇಹೀ ತದ್ರಾಗಾನ್ನಯಸ್ತ ಭೂಷಣಾ৷৷2.60.19৷৷
ಭಾಮಿನೀ damsel (Sita), ನೂಪುರೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟ ಹೇಲೇವ tinkling anklets proclaiming dalliance, ಖೇಲಮ್ (as if) playing, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ going, ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ಇದಾನೀಮಪಿ even now, ತದ್ರಾಗಾತ್ due to affection for Rama, ನಯಸ್ತಭೂಷಣಾ cast off the ornaments.
Casting off her ornaments, the damsel (Sita) is gracefully walking as if dalliant with her tinkling anklets for her love for him (Rama).
ವನಮ್ forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತಾ resorted, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಬಾಹೂ arms, ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಾ having taken refuge, ಗಜಂ ವಾ elephant, ಸಿಂಹಂ ವಾ or lion, ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ವಾ or tiger, ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಸನ್ತ್ರಾಸಂ fear, ನಾಹಾರಯತಿ does not get.
Though in the forest, Sita, under the protection of Rama's arms, is afraid of neither elephants nor lions nor tigers.
ತೇ they, ನ ಶೋಚ್ಯಾಃ need not be pitied, ಆತ್ಮನಃ ಚ yourself, ನ not, ಜನಾಧಿಪ ಅಪಿ king also, ಇದಮ್ this, ಚರಿತಮ್ history, ಲೋಕೇ in the world, ಶಾಶ್ವತಮ್ permanently, ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಸ್ಯತಿ will endure.
You need not lament for them or for yourself or for the king. This story of Rama will endure permanently in the world.
ತೇ they, ಶೋಕಮ್ grief, ವಿಧೂಯ shaking off, ಪರಿಹೃಷ್ಟಮಾನಸಾಃ with cheerful hearts, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಯಾತೇ established by maharshis, ಪಥಿ in the path, ಸುವ್ಯವತ್ಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ firmly fixed, ವನೇ in the forest, ರತಾಃ are enjoying, ವನ್ಯಫಲಾಶನಾಃ subsisting on forest fruits, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಶುಭಾಮ್ auspicious, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಮ್ promise, ಪರಿಪಾಲಯನ್ತಿ are upholding.
They are upholding the sacred promise of their father with cheerful hearts, grief given the go-by, steadfastly pursuing the path established by maharsis, subsisting on forest fruits and enjoying the forest life.
ನ ಚೈವ ದೇವೀ ವಿರರಾಮ ಕೂಜಿತಾತ್ಪ್ರಿಯೇತಿ ಪುತ್ರೇತಿ ಚ ರಾಘವೇತಿ ಚ৷৷2.60.23৷৷
ಸುಯುಕ್ತವಾದಿನಾ by one who was speaking befittingly, ಸೂತೇನಾ by Sumantra, ತಥಾ like that, ನಿವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಾಪಿ though prevented, ದೇವೀ queen Kausalya, ಸುತಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾ enfeebled with weeping over her son, ಪ್ರಿಯೇತಿ 'O My beloved', ಪುತ್ರೇತಿ 'O my son', ರಾಘವೇತಿ ಚ 'O Rama', ಕೂಜಿತಾತ್ from crying, ನಚೈವ ವಿರರಾಮ did not stop.
Though Sumantra was speaking with befitting words to prevent Kausalya from weeping over her son which had enfeebled her, she did not stop crying, 'O my beloved', 'O my son', 'O Rama'. ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷ Thus ends the sixtieth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
