[Kausalya condemns Dasaratha's action --- Dasaratha loses his senses out of intense grief.]

ವನಂ ಗತೇ ಧರ್ಮಪರೇ ರಾಮೇ ರಮಯತಾಂ ವರೇ.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ರುದತೀ ಸ್ವಾರ್ತಾ ಭರ್ತಾರಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.61.1৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಪರೇ dutiful, ರಮಯತಾಮ್ pleasing others, ವರೇ greatest, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ವನಮ್ forest, ಗತೇ had gone, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಸ್ವಾರ್ತಾ in bitter anguish, ರುದತೀ sobbing, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ to her husband, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

When Rama, the greatest among those who please the people, he who was conscious of his duty left for the forest. Kausalya, sobbing in bitter anguish, said to her husband:
ಯದ್ಯಪಿ ತ್ರಿಷು ಲೋಕೇಷು ಪ್ರಥಿತಂ ತೇ ಮಹದ್ಯಶಃ.

ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶೋ ವದಾನ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದೀ ಚ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.61.2৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ Dasaratha, scion of the Raghu dynasty, ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶಃ compassionate, ವದಾನ್ಯಶ್ಚ generous, ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದೀ ಚ sweet-tongued, ತೇ your, ಮಹತ್ great, ಯಶಃ fame, ತ್ರಿಷು three, ಲೋಕೇಷು in worlds, ಪ್ರಥಿತಂ ಯದ್ಯಪಿ even though very popular.

Your great fame has spread all over the three worlds. People know you as compassionate, generous and sweet-speaking scion of the Raghus.
ಕಥಂ ನರವರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ! ಪುತ್ರೌ ತೌ ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ.

ದುಃಖಿತೌ ಸುಖಸಂವೃದ್ಧೌ ವನೇ ದುಃಖಂ ಸಹಿಷ್ಯತಃ৷৷2.61.3৷৷


ನರವರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ! best among kings (Dasaratha), ಸುಖಸಂವೃದ್ಧೌ brought up with comfort, ತೌ ಪುತ್ರೌ your two sons, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ದುಃಖಿತೌ stricken with grief, ವನೇ in the forest, ದುಃಖಮ್ suffering, ಕಥಮ್ how?, ಸಹಿಷ್ಯತಃ endure?

O Dasaratha, the best among kings, how will your two sons and Sita brought up in great comfort now tolerate the hardships of forest life?
ಸಾ ನೂನಂ ತರುಣೀ ಶ್ಯಾಮಾ ಸುಕುಮಾರೀ ಸುಖೋಚಿತಾ.

ಕಥಮುಷ್ಣಂ ಚ ಶೀತಂ ಚ ಮೈಥಿಲೀ ಪ್ರಸಹಿಷ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.61.4৷৷


ತರುಣೀ young, ಶ್ಯಾಮಾ in the prime of life, ಸುಕುಮಾರೀ delicate, ಸುಖೋಚಿತಾ accustomed to comfort, ಸಾ ಮೈಥಿಲೀ that Sita, ಉಷ್ಣಂ ಚ heat, ಶೀತಂ ಚ cold, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ಕಥಮ್ how?, ಪ್ರಸಹಿಷ್ಯತೇ will bear.

How can the daughter of Mithila (Sita) who in the prime of her life, accustomed to comforts, endure heat and cold indeed?
ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾಶನಂ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೀ ಸೂಪದಂ ಶಾನ್ವಿತಂ ಶುಭಮ್.

How can the large-eyed Sita having enjoyed delicious food mixed with condiments and soup now partake the food prepared with wild grains?

ಅನಿನ್ದಿತಾ blameless, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ಗೀತವಾದಿತ್ರನಿರ್ಘೋಷಮ್ sounds of songs and musical instruments, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಅಶೋಭನಮ್ inauspicious, ಕ್ರವ್ಯಾದಸಿಂಹಾನಾಮ್ carnivorous animals' and lions', ಶಬ್ದಮ್ sound, ಕಥಮ್ how?, ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯತಿ can hear.

How can the blameless Sita, used to the soft sound of songs and musical
instruments hear the frightful roars of lions and other carnivorous animals?
ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಧ್ವಜಸಙ್ಕಾಶಃ ಕ್ವ ನು ಶೇತೇ ಮಹಾಭುಜಃ.

ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಧ್ವಜಸಙ್ಕಾಶಃ resembling mighty Indra's banner, ಮಹಾಭುಜಃ long-armed one, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ mighty, ಪರಿಘಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ like a sword, ಭುಜಮ್ arm, ಉಪಧಾಯ using as a pillow, ಕ್ವ where, ಶೇತೇ ನು
is he sleeping?

Where will that mighty-armed and powerful Rama, as lofty as Indra's banner, sleep using his iron-bar-like arm as pillow?.
ಪದ್ಮವರ್ಣಂ ಸುಕೇಶಾನ್ತಂ ಪದ್ಮನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಾಸಮುತ್ತಮಮ್.

ಕದಾ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ವದನಂ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಕ್ಷಣಮ್৷৷2.61.8৷৷


ಪದ್ಮವರ್ಣಮ್ lotus-like complexion, ಸುಕೇಶಾನ್ತಮ್ having beautiful hair-ends, ಪದ್ಮನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಾಸಮ್ breath of lotus fragrance, ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಕ್ಷಣಮ್ eyes like blue lotus, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ excellent, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ವದನಮ್ Rama's countenance, ಕದಾ when, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall I behold?.

When shall I see Rama with his lotus-hued face, his beautiful locks of hair, breath of lotus fragrance and eyes like blue lotus?
ವಜ್ರಸಾರಮಯಂ ನೂನಂ ಹೃದಯಂ ಮೇ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ.

ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಾ ನ ತಂ ಯದ್ವೈ ಫಲತೀದಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಧಾ৷৷2.61.9৷৷


ಮೇ ಹೃದಯಮ್ my heart, ವಜ್ರಸಾರಮಯಮ್ is made of thunderbolt, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ಸಂಶಯಃ doubt, ನ not, ಯತ್ since, ತಮ್ Rama, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಾಃ without seeing, ಇದಮ್ this heart, ಸಹಸ್ರಧಾ thousand pieces, ನ ಫಲತಿ ವೈ does not shatter.

No doubt my heart must be made of thunderbolt, since unable to see Rama it does not split into a thousand pieces.
ಯತ್ತ್ವಯಾಕರುಣಂ ಕರ್ಮ ವ್ಯಪೋಹ್ಯ ಮಮ ಬಾನ್ಧವಾಃ.

ನಿರಸ್ತಾಃ ಪರಿಧಾವನ್ತಿ ಸುಖಾರ್ಹಾಃ ಕೃಪಣಾ ವನೇ৷৷2.61.10৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಕರುಣಮ್ heartless, ಕರ್ಮ act, ವ್ಯಪೋಹ್ಯ cast away, ಸುಖಾರ್ಹಾಃ deserve pleasures, ಮಮ ಬಾನ್ಧವಾಃ my relations, ನಿರಸ್ತಾಃ are banished, ಕೃಪಣಾಃ the miserable ones, ವನೇ in the forest, ಯತ್ since, ಪರಿಧಾವನ್ತಿ are running around.

(O king) It is because of your heartless action, my Rama and my relatives who deserve to enjoy pleasures at this age have been banished and are miserably wandering in wilderness.
ಯದಿ ಪಞ್ಚದಶೇ ವರ್ಷೇ ರಾಘವಃ ಪುನರೇಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಜಹ್ಯಾದ್ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚ ಕೋಷಂ ಚ ಭರತೋ ನೋಪಲಕ್ಷಯತೇ৷৷2.61.11৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪಞ್ಚದಶೇ ವರ್ಷೇ in the fifteenth year, ಪುನಃ ಏಷ್ಯತಿ ಯದಿ if returns, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚ kingdom, ಕೋಷಂ ಚ treasury too, ಜಹ್ಯಾತ್ will give up, ನೋಪಲಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ it does not appear.

Even if Rama returns in the fifteenth year, it is unlikely that Bharata will give up the kingdom and royal treasury (in favour of Rama).
ಭೋಜಯನ್ತಿ ಕಿಲ ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧೇ ಕೇಚಿತ್ಸ್ವಾನೇವ ಬಾನ್ಧವಾನ್.

ತತಃ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ಸಮೀಕ್ಷನ್ತೇ ಕೃತಕಾರ್ಯಾ ದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಾನ್৷৷2.61.12৷৷


ಕೇಚಿತ್ some people, ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧೇ in the shraddha ceremony, ಸ್ವಾನ್ own, ಬಾನ್ಧವಾನೇವ relatives only, ಭೋಜಯನ್ತಿ ಕಿಲ feed them, ಕೃತಕಾರ್ಯಾಃ having completed this ceremony, ತತಃ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ thereafter, ದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಾನ್ bulls (best) among brahmins, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷನ್ತೇ will look for.

Some first feed their own relatives in shraddha ceremony and thereafter look for the best of brahmins to feed.
ತತ್ರ ಯೇ ಗುಣವನ್ತಶ್ಚ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸಶ್ಚ ದ್ವಿಜಾತಯಃ.

ನ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತೇಭಿಮನ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಸುಧಾಮಪಿ ಸುರೋಪಮಾಃ৷৷2.61.13৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಯೇ those, ಗುಣವನ್ತಶ್ಚ virtuous, ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸಶ್ಚ learned, ಸುರೋಪಮಾಃ similar to devatas, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಯಃ ತೇ those brahmins, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ after others, ಸುಧಾಮಪಿ even ambrosia, ನ ಅಭಿಮನ್ಯನ್ತೇ will not accept.

The god-like brahmins who are virtuous and learned will not accept the food after others have partaken even if it is ambrosia.
ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಷ್ವಪಿ ತೃಪ್ತೇಷು ಪಶ್ಚಾದ್ಭೋಕ್ತುಂ ದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಾಃ.

ನಾಭ್ಯುಪೈತುಮಲಂ ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ಶ್ಶೃಙ್ಗಚ್ಛೇದಮಿವರ್ಷಭಾಃ৷৷2.61.14৷৷


ತೃಪ್ತೇಷು contented, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಷ್ವಪಿ even if they are brahmins, ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಾಃ the wise, ದ್ವಿಜರ್ಷಭಾಃ bulls (best) among brahmins, ಋಷಭಾಃ like bulls, ಶ್ರುಙ್ಗಚ್ಛೇದಮಿವ shorn of their horns, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ afterwards, ಭೋಕ್ತುಮ್ to partake, ಅಭ್ಯುಪೈತುಮ್ to accept, ನಾಲಮ್ should not.

The bulls (best) among the wise brahmins would not like to accept the food after it is tasted by other brahmins, just as bulls dislike their horns being shorn.
ಏವಂ ಕನೀಯಸಾ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಭುಕ್ತಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ವಿಶಾಮ್ಪತೇ.

ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೋ ವರಿಷ್ಠಶ್ಚ ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ನಾವಮಂಸ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.61.15৷৷


ವಿಶಾಮ್ಪತೇ O Lord of the world (Dasaratha), ಏವಮ್ likewise, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಃ eldest, ವರಿಷ್ಠಶ್ಚ most distinguished one, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಕನೀಯಸಾ by the younger, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ brother, ಭುಕ್ತಮ್ enjoyed, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಕಿಮರ್ಥಮ್ why, ನಾವಮಂಸ್ಯತೇ will not disdain.

O Lord of the world! why not the eldest and the most distinguished among the brothers likewise disdain the kingdom enjoyed by the younger brother?
ನ ಪರೇಣಾಹೃತಂ ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಂ ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ ಖಾದಿತುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ.

ಏವಮೇತನ್ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ ಪರಲೀಢಂ ನ ಮನ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.61.16৷৷


ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ tiger, ಪರೇಣ by some other animal, ಆಹೃತಮ್ procured, ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಮ್ food, ಖಾದಿತುಮ್ to eat, ನ ಇಚ್ಛತಿ does not like, ಏವಂ in the same way, ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ the (best) among men (Rama), ಏತತ್ ಪರಲೀಢಮ್ enjoyed by others, ನ ಮನ್ಯತೇ will not accept.

Just as a tiger will not eat the food acquired by another beast, Rama, the tiger (best) among men will not accept the kingdom enjoyed by others.
ಹವಿರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪುರೋಡಾಶಾಃ ಕುಶಾ ಯೂಪಾಶ್ಚ ಖಾದಿರಾಃ.

ನೈತಾನಿ ಯಾತಯಾಮಾನಿ ಕುರ್ವನ್ತಿ ಪುನರಧ್ವರೇ৷৷2.61.17৷৷


ಹವಿಃ offering to the Fire-god, ಆಜ್ಯಮ್ ghee, ಪುರೋಡಾಶಾಃ sacrificial cakes, ಕುಶಾಃ kusha grass, ಖಾದಿರಾಃ khadira wood, ಯೂಪಾಶ್ಚ sacrificial posts, ಯಾತಯಾಮಾನಿ after the lapse of one Yama (three hours), ಏತಾನಿ all these, ಅಧ್ವರೇ in the sacrifice, ಪುನಃ again, ನ ಕುರ್ವನ್ತಿ will not be used.

Havis, sacrificial offerings like ghee, cakes, kusha grass, and sacrificial posts made from khadira wood, once used in the sacrifice cannot be used again.
ತಥಾ ಹ್ಯಾತ್ತಮಿದಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಹೃತಸಾರಾಂ ಸುರಾಮಿವ.

ನಾಭಿಮನ್ತುಮಲಂ ರಾಮೋ ನಷ್ಟಸೋಮಮಿವಾಧ್ವರಮ್৷৷2.61.18৷৷


ತಥಾ in the same way, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಆತ್ತಮ್ enjoyed by others, ಇದಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ this kingdom, ಹೃತಸಾರಾಮ್ its essence taken away, ಸುರಾಮಿವ like liquour, ನಷ್ಟಸೋಮಮ್ like the run out soma juice, ಅಧ್ವರಮಿವ like a sacrifice, ಅಭಿಮನ್ತುಮ್ to accept, ನಾಲಮ್ should not.

In the same way Rama will not accept this kingdom enjoyed by others like liquour or soma juice drained of its essence.
ನ ಚೇಮಾಂ ಧರ್ಷಣಾಂ ರಾಮ ಸಙ್ಗಚ್ಛೇದತ್ಯಮರ್ಷಣಃ.

ದಾರಯೇನ್ಮನ್ದರಮಪಿ ಸ ಹಿ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಶ್ಶಿತೈಶ್ಶರೈಃ৷৷2.61.19৷৷


ಅತ್ಯಮರ್ಷಣ: highly determined, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಧರ್ಷಣಾಮ್ indignity, ನ ಸಙ್ಗಚ್ಛೇತ್ will not
suffer, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧ: if angered, ಸಃ he, ಶಿತೈಃ with sharp, ಸರೈಃ with arrows, ಮನ್ದರಮಪಿ even mount Mandara, ದಾರಯೇತ್ ಹಿ will split open.

Rama, highly determined will not suffer this indignity. If enraged, he can split open even mount Mandara with his sharp arrows.
ತ್ವಾಂ ತು ನೋತ್ಸಹತೇ ಹನ್ತುಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಪಿತೃಗೌರವಾತ್.

ಸಸೋಮಾರ್ಕಗ್ರಹಗಣಂ ನಭಸ್ತಾರಾವಿಚಿತ್ರಿತಮ್৷৷2.61.20৷৷

ಪಾತಯೇದ್ಯೋದಿವಂ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಸ್ಸತ್ವಾಂ ನ ವ್ಯತಿವರ್ತತೇ.

ಪ್ರಕ್ಷೋಭಯೇದ್ವಾರಯೇ ದ್ವಾ ಮಹೀಂ ಶೈಲಶತಾಚಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.61.21৷৷


ತು but, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ great, ಪಿತೃಗೌರವಾತ್ out of respect for a father, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಹನ್ತುಮ್ to kill, ನೋತ್ಸಹತೇ is not showing interest, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧ: inflamed, ಯಃ who, ಸಸೋಮಾರ್ಕಗ್ರಹಗಣಮ್ with Sun, Moon and planets, ತಾರಾವಿಚಿತ್ರಿತಮ್ looking wonderful with stars, ನಭಃ sky, ದಿವಮ್ heaven, ಪಾತಯೇತ್ may pull down, ನಃ he, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನ ವ್ಯತಿವರ್ತತೇ is not disobeying, ಶೈಲಶತ ಚಿತಾಮ್ surrounded by hundreds of mountains, ಮಹೀಮ್ earth, ಪ್ರಕ್ಷೋಭಯೇದ್ವಾ will shake, ದಾರಯೇದ್ವಾ or may break.

Out of respect for his father magnanimous Rama is not inclined to kill you. He has not defied the anger, the Sun, the Moon and the sky looking wonderful with stars can be pulled down. He will not even shake or break the earth surrounded by hundreds of mountains.
ನೈವಂ ವಿಧಮಸತ್ಕಾರಂ ರಾಘವೋ ಮರ್ಷಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಬಲವಾನಿವ ಶಾರ್ದೂಲೋ ವಾಲಧೇರಭಿಮರ್ಶನಮ್৷৷2.61.22৷৷


ಬಲವಾನ್ strong, ಶಾರ್ದೂಲಃ tiger, ವಾಲಧೇಃ of its tail, ಅಭಿಮರ್ಶನಮ್ ಇವ like twisting, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಏವಂ ವಿಧಮ್ such, ಅಸತ್ಕಾರಮ್ insult, ನ ಮರ್ಷಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will not tolerate.

A powerful tiger will not allow its tail to be twisted. In the same way Rama also will not tolerate an insult of this sort.
ನೈತಸ್ಯ ಸಹಿತಾ ಲೋಕಾ ಭಯಂ ಕುರ್ಯುರ್ಮಹಾಮೃಥೇ.

ಅಧರ್ಮಂತ್ವಿಹ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಲೋಕಂ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಯೋಜಯೇತ್৷৷2.61.23৷৷


ಮಹಾಮೃಥೇ in the great war, ಲೋಕಾಃ worlds, ಸಹಿತಾಃ united, ಏತಸ್ಯ for him, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ನ ಕುರ್ಯುಃ will not create, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ virtuous, ಅಧರ್ಮಮ್ unrighteous, ಲೋಕಮ್ world, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ with righteousness, ಯೋಜಯೇತ್ will confer.

Even if all the worlds were to unite and fight against him, he will not fear. This
righteous Rama will re-establish justice in this unrighteous world.
ನನ್ವಸೌ ಕಾಞ್ಚನೈರ್ಬಾಣೈರ್ಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯೋ ಮಹಾಭುಜಃ.

ಯುಗಾನ್ತ ಇವ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಸಾಗರಾನಪಿ ನಿರ್ದಹೇತ್৷৷2.61.24৷৷


ಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯಃ mighty, ಮಹಾಭುಜಃ long-armed, ಅಸೌ this Rama, ಕಾಞ್ಚನೈಃ golden, ಬಾಣೈಃ with shafts, ಯುಗಾನ್ತಃ ಇವ like at the time of deluge, ಭೂತಾನಿ all beings, ಸಾಗರಾನಪಿ all the oceans, ನಿರ್ದಹೇತ್ will be consumed in fire.

Valiant and mighty-armed Rama, with his golden shafts can annihilate all living beings and oceans like at the time of deluge everything is consumed in fire.
ಸ ತಾದೃಶಸ್ಸಿಂಹಬಲೋ ವೃಷಭಾಕ್ಷೋ ನರರ್ಷಭಃ.

ಸ್ವಯಮೇವ ಹತಃ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಜಲಜೇನಾತ್ಮಜೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.61.25৷৷


ತಾದೃಶಃ such, ಸಿಂಹಬಲಃ powerful as lion, ವೃಷಭಾಕ್ಷಃ his eyes resembling a bull's, ಸಃ ನರರ್ಷಭಃ that one, a bull among men, ಜಲಜೇನ by fish, ಆತ್ಮಜೋ ಯಥಾ its own offspring, ಪಿತ್ರೈವ by his father himself, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ by himself, ಹತಃ killed.

Such Rama, the best among men, powerful like a lion, with eyes fierce like that of a bull has been destroyed by his own father just as the big fish destroys its own offsprings.
ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಚರಿತೋ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದೃಷ್ಟಸ್ಸನಾತನಃ.

ಯದಿ ತೇ ಧರ್ಮನಿರತೇ ತ್ವಯಾ ಪುತ್ರೇ ವಿವಾಸಿತೇ৷৷2.61.26৷৷


ಧರ್ಮನಿರತೇ devoted to righteousness, ಪುತ್ರೇ son, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವಿವಾಸಿತೇ has been banished, ತೇ to you, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದೃಷ್ಟಃ seen in the scriptures, ಸನಾತನಃ eternal, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಚರಿತಃ followed by the twice-born, ಧರ್ಮಃ ಯದಿ is it righteous act?

You have banished your son who is devoted to righteousness. Is it in accordance with the scriptures and the eternal tradition followed by the twice-born?
ಗತಿರೇಕಾ ಪತಿರ್ನಾರ್ಯಾ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ ಗತಿರಾತ್ಮಜಃ.

ತೃತೀಯಾ ಜ್ಞಾತಯೋ ರಾಜಂಶ್ಚತುರ್ಥೀ ನೇಹ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.61.27৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ನಾರ್ಯಾಃ for a woman,ಪತಿಃ husband, ಏಕಾ one, ಗತಿಃ refuge, ಆತ್ಮಜಃ son, ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ ಗತಿಃ second refuge, ಜ್ಞಾತಯಃ relatives, ತೃತೀಯಾ third, ಚತುರ್ಥೀ fourth, ಇಹ in this world, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ does not exist.

O king! for a woman the first refuge is the husband, the second her son, the third her relatives and there is no fourth alternative in this world.
ತತ್ರ ತ್ವಂ ಚೈವ ಮೇ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ವನಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.

ನ ವನಂ ಗನ್ತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಸರ್ವಥಾ ನಿಹತಾ ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.61.28৷৷


ತತ್ರ in these three states, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ನೈವಾಸಿ is not, ರಾಮಸ್ತು as for Rama, ವನಮ್ forest, ಅಶ್ರಿತಃ has taken refuge, ವನಮ್ forest, ಗನ್ತುಮ್ to go, ನ ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I do not desire, ಸರ್ವಥಾ in all possible ways, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ನಿಹತಾ I am destroyed.

You are non-existent for my purpose. Rama has taken refuge in the forest and I do not like to go there. You have destroyed me in all possible ways.
ಹತಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಿದಂ ಸರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಂ ಹತಸ್ತಥಾತ್ಮಾ ಸಹ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಶ್ಚ.

ಹತಾ ಸಪುತ್ರಾಸ್ಮಿ ಹತಾಶ್ಚ ಪೌರಾಸ್ಸುತ ಶ್ಚ ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಚ ತವ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೌ৷৷2.61.29৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಸರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ with kingdom, ಇದಮ್ ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ this kingship, ಹತಮ್ is destroyed, ತಥಾ also, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ ಸಹ along with ministers, ಆತ್ಮಾ yourself, ಹತಃ are destroyed, ಸಪುತ್ರಾಃ me along with my son, ಹತಾ: are ruined, ಪೌರಾಶ್ಚ inhabitants of the city of Ayodhya, ಹತಾಃ destroyed, ತವ your, ಸುತಶ್ಚ son Bharata, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife Kaikeyi, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೌ happy.

You have destroyed this kingdom, and the state along with its inhabitants. You have ruined yourself along with your ministers. You have brought disaster to me and to my son. Your son (Bharata) and your wife (Kaikeyi) are the only persons who are happy.
ಇಮಾಂ ಗಿರಂ ದಾರುಣಶಬ್ದ ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಾಂ ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ರಾಜಾಪಿ ಮುಮೋಹ ದುಃಖಿತಃ.

ತತ ಸ್ಸ ಶೋಕಂ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಸ್ಸ್ವದುಷ್ಕೃತಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಪುನಸ್ತದಾ ಸ್ಮರನ್৷৷2.61.30৷৷


ರಾಜಾಪಿ the king too, ದಾರುಣಶಬ್ದಸಂಶ್ರಿತಾಮ್ uttered with cruel words, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಗಿರಮ್ utterances, ನಿಶಮ್ಯ having heard, ದುಃಖಿತಃ was distressed, ಮುಮೋಹ became senseless, ತತಃ thereafter, ಸಃ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ that king, ತದಾ then, ಸ್ವದುಷ್ಕೃತಮ್ his own folly, ಪುನಃ again, ಸ್ಮರನ್ recollecting, ಶೋಕಮ್ in sad state, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.

Hearing the words uttered in harrowing accents, the king overcome with deep distress became senseless. Recollecting his folly thereafter he fell into a sad state.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfirst sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
