Sloka & Translation

[Dasaratha recalls the past he had shot an arrow at a hermit boy while he was filling a pot with water, mistaking the sound to be that of an elephant --- Dasaratha realizes the unintentional mistake in killing the boy.]

ಪ್ರತಿಬುದ್ಧೋ ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇನ ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚೇತನಃ.

ಅಥ ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ಸಚಿನ್ತಾಮಭ್ಯಪದ್ಯತ৷৷2.63.1৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಸಃ ರಾಜಾ that king, ಮೂಹೂರ್ತೇನ in a moment, ಪ್ರತಿಬುದ್ಧಃ was awakened, ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚೇತನಃ with his spirit gripped by sorrow, ಚಿನ್ತಾಮ್ worry, ಅಭ್ಯಪದ್ಯತ obtained.

Waking up in a moment tormented with grief, the king began to ponder once again.
ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಯೋಶ್ಚೈವ ವಿವಾಸಾ ದ್ವಾಸವೋಪಮಮ್.

ಆವಿವೇಶೋಪಸರ್ಗಸ್ತಂ ತಮ ಸ್ಸೂರ್ಯಮಿವಾಸುರಮ್৷৷2.63.2৷৷


ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಯೋಃ Rama and Lakshmana, ವಿವಾಸಾತ್ due to banishment, ವಾಸವೋಪಮಮ್ like Indra, ತಮ್ him, ಅಸುರಮ್ relating to that asura, ತಮಃ darkness, ಸೂರ್ಯಮಿವ like the Sun, ಉಪಸರ್ಗಃ great calamity, ಆವಿವೇಶ took possesion of.

Indra-like Dasaratha due to banishment of Rama and Lakshmana, was besieged by a great calamity like the Sun enveloped by demonic dark at the time of eclipse.
ಸಭಾರ್ಯೇ ನಿರ್ಗತೇ ರಾಮೇ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಕೋಶಲೇಶ್ವರಃ.

ವಿವಕ್ಷುರಸಿತಾಪಾಙ್ಗಾಂ ಸ್ಮೃತ್ವಾ ದುಷ್ಕೃತಮಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.63.3৷৷


ಸಭಾರ್ಯೇ with his wife, ರಾಮೇ when Rama, ನಿರ್ಗತೇ ಸತಿ had departed, ಕೋಶಲೇಶ್ವರಃ king of Kosala (Dasaratha), ಆತ್ಮನಃ his own, ದುಷ್ಕೃತಮ್ evil deed, ಸ್ಮೃತ್ವಾ remembering, ಅಸಿತಾಪಾಙ್ಗಾಮ್ with black eye ball, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ to Kausalya, ವಿವಕ್ಷುಃ wished to speak.

After Rama had left along with his wife the king of Kosala (Dasaratha) recollected his former evil deed and wanted to narrate it to the dark-eyed Kausalya.
ಸ ರಾಜಾ ರಜನೀಂ ಷಷ್ಠೀಂ ರಾಮೇ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೇ ವನಮ್.

ಅರ್ಧರಾತ್ರೇ ದಶರಥ ಸ್ಸಂಸ್ಮರನ್ ದುಷ್ಕೃತಂ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.63.4৷৷


ರಾಮೇ Rama, ವನಮ್ to forest, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೇ was banished, ರಾಜಾ king, ಸಃ ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಷಷ್ಠೀಮ್ sixth, ರಜನೀಮ್ night, ಅರ್ಧರಾತ್ರೇ in the middle of the night, ಕೃತಮ್ done in the past, ದುಷ್ಕೃತಮ್ evil deeds, ಸಂಸ್ಮರನ್ recalled.

After the banishment of Rama the king spent the sixth night, recalling the evil deed done by him in the past.
ಸ ರಾಜಾ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾರ್ತಃ ಸ್ಮೃತ್ವಾ ದುಷ್ಕೃತಮಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾರ್ತಾಮಿದಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.63.5৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾರ್ತಃ grief-stricken because of (separation from) the son, ಸಃ ರಾಜಾ the king, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his own, ದುಷ್ಕೃತಮ್ misdeed, ಸ್ಮೃತ್ವಾ having remembered, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾರ್ತಾಮ್ grieving helplessly due to the separation from his son, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ to Kausalya, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said

King Dasaratha distressed by the separation from his son, pondered over his past misdeed, and said to helpless Kausalya, who was equally grieving over the separation from Rama:
ಯದಾಚರತಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿ! ಶುಭಂ ವಾ ಯದಿ ವಾಶುಭಮ್.

ತದೇವ ಲಭತೇ ಭದ್ರೇ! ಕರ್ತಾ ಕರ್ಮಜಮಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.63.6৷৷


ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿ! O auspicious lady, ಭದ್ರೇ! o gentle lady, ಕರ್ತಾ the agent of an act, ಶುಭಂ ವಾ good or, ಯದಿ ವಾ or if, ಅಶುಭಮ್ evil, ಯತ್ whichever, ಆಚರತಿ (ಕುರುತೇ) performs, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his, ಕರ್ಮಜಮ್ result of action, ತದೇವ the same only, ಲಭತೇ will attain.

O gentle auspicious lady! a man has to reap the fruit of his action, good or evil.
ಗುರುಲಾಘವಮರ್ಥಾನಾಮಾರಮ್ಭೇ ಕರ್ಮಣಾಂ ಫಲಮ್.

ದೋಷಂ ವಾ ಯೋ ನ ಜಾನಾತಿ ನ ಬಾಲ ಇತಿ ಹೋಚ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.63.7৷৷


ಯಃ whoever, ಕರ್ಮಣಾಮ್ actions, ಆರಮ್ಭೇ at the beginning, ಅರ್ಥಾನಾಮ್ the benefits, ಗುರುಲಾಘವಮ್ relative value, ಫಲಮ್ fruit, ದೋಷಂ ವಾ or blemish, ನ ಜಾನಾತಿ does not know, ಸಃ that one, ಬಾಲಃ ಇತಿ as a boy, ಉಚ್ಯತೇ ಹ is considered.

He who, at the commencement of any action, does not foresee the good or evil consequences of his action in considered a child.
ಕಶ್ಚಿದಾಮ್ರವಣಂ ಛಿತ್ತ್ವಾ ಪಲಾಶಾಂ ಶ್ಚ ನಿಷಿಞ್ಚತಿ.

ಪುಷ್ಪಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಫಲೇ ಗೃಧ್ನು ಸ್ಸ ಶೋಚತಿ ಫಲಾಗಮೇ৷৷2.63.8৷৷


ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ some one, ಪುಷ್ಪಮ್ flowers, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಫಲೇ fruit (of that tree), ಗೃಧ್ನುಃ greed, ಆಮ್ರವಣಮ್ mango trees, ಛಿತ್ವಾ having cut, ಪಲಾಶಾಮ್ palasa tree, ನಿಷಿಞ್ಚತಿ waters, ಸಃ he, ಫಲಾಗಮೇ when the fruits are borne, ಶೋಚತಿ will repent.

If some one cuts down mango trees and plants palasa trees and waters them will repent when he sees only flowers while he expects fruit.
ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ಫಲಂ ಯೋ ಹಿ ಕರ್ಮ ತ್ವೇವಾನುಧಾವತಿ.

ಸ ಶೋಚೇತ್ಫಲವೇಲಾಯಾಂ ಯಥಾ ಕಿಂಶುಕಸೇಚಕಃ৷৷2.63.9৷৷


ಯಃ whoever, ಫಲಮ್ fruit, ಆವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ not knowing, ಕರ್ಮ ತು ಏವ action only, ಅನುಧಾವತಿ runs after, ಸಃ he, ಕಿಂಶುಕಸೇಚಕಃ ಇವ like the one who waters kimsuka tree (palasa), ಫಲವೇಲಾಯಾಮ್ at the time of reaping the fruits of action, ಶೋಚೇತ್ will regret.

Without foreseeing the fruits of his action, he who runs after action only will regret at the time of fruition like the one who waters the palasa tree.
ಸೋಹಮಾಮ್ರವಣಂ ಛಿತ್ವಾ ಪಲಾಶಾಂಶ್ಚ ನ್ಯಷೇಚಯಮ್.

ರಾಮಂ ಫಲಾಗಮೇ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಪಶ್ಚಾಚ್ಛೋಚಾಮಿ ದುರ್ಮತಿಃ৷৷2.63.10৷৷


ಸಃ ಅಹಮ್ such me, ಆಮ್ರವಣಮ್ mango trees, ಛಿತ್ವಾ cutting, ಪಲಾಶಾನ್ ಚ palasa trees, ನ್ಯಷೇಚಯಮ್ have watered, ದುರ್ಮತಿಃ unwise, ಫಲಾಗಮೇ at the time of bearing fruit, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ leaving, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ repenting, ಶೋಚಾಮಿ I am grieving.

So I have cut the mango trees and watered palasa trees. In utter foolishness, I have banished Rama at the time of fruition and regretting later.
ಲಬ್ಧಶಬ್ದೇನ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ! ಕುಮಾರೇಣ ಧನುಷ್ಮತಾ.

ಕುಮಾರಶ್ಶಬ್ದವೇಧೀತಿ ಮಯಾ ಪಾಪಮಿದಂ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.63.11৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯೇ! O Kausalya, ಶಬ್ದವೇಧೀ one who can shoot arrows aiming at the target by sound, ಕುಮಾರಃ ಇತಿ in chidhood itself, ಲಬ್ಧಶಬ್ದೇನ attaining knowledge of sound, ಕುಮಾರೇಣ in my youth, ಧನುಷ್ಮತಾ as an archer, ಮಯಾ by me, ಇದಮ್ this, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಕೃತಮ್ was done.

O Kausalya! in my youth I was a great archer who could hit the target by its sound. As such I committed this sin.
ತದಿದಂ ಮೇನುಸಂಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ದೇವಿ! ದುಃಖಂ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಕೃತಮ್.

ಸಮ್ಮೋಹಾದಿಹ ಬಾಲೇನ ಯಥಾ ಸ್ಯಾದ್ಭಕ್ಷಿತಂ ವಿಷಮ್৷৷2.63.12৷৷


ದೇವಿ! Kausalya, ಇಹ in this world, ಸಮ್ಮೋಹಾತ್ out of delusion, ಬಾಲೇನ like a boy, ಭಕ್ಷಿತಮ್ eats, ವಿಷಮ್ poison, ಯಥಾ as, ಸ್ಯಾತ್ may be, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ one's own self, ಕೃತಮ್ has been done, ತತ್ ಇದಮ್ that this, ದುಃಖಮ್ calamity, ಮೇ to me, ಅನುಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ has befallen.

Just as a boy consumes poison out of delusion, O Devi, this sorrow has befallen me as a result of my own action.
ಯಥಾನ್ಯಃ ಪುರುಷಃ ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ಪಲಾಶೈರ್ಮೋಹಿತೋ ಭವೇತ್.

ಏವಂ ಮಮಾಪ್ಯವಿಜ್ಞಾತಂ ಶಬ್ದವೇಧ್ಯಮಯಂ ಫಲಮ್৷৷2.63.13৷৷


ಅನ್ಯಃ other, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ some one, ಪುರುಷಃ man, ಪಲಾಶೈಃ by palasa trees, ಯಥಾ as, ಮೋಹಿತಃ deluded, ಭವೇತ್ becomes, ಏವಮ್ like that, ಮಮಾಪಿ to me, ಶಬ್ದವೇಧ್ಯಮಯಮ್ the act of shooting the target on hearing the sound, ಫಲಮ್ the consequences, ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾತಮ್ was not pre-meditated.

Like some one who is deluded by palasa trees I too did not realise the consequences of shooting the target following the direction of the sound.
ದೇವ್ಯನೂಢಾ ತ್ವಮಭವೋ ಯುವರಾಜೋ ಭವಾಮ್ಯಹಮ್.

ತತಃ ಪ್ರಾವೃಡನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಮದಕಾಮವಿವರ್ಧಿನೀ৷৷2.63.14৷৷


ದೇವಿ O Kausalya, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಅನೂಢಾ not married, ಅಭವಃ you were, ಯುವರಾಜ: ಭವಾಮಿ I was prince regent, ತತಃ at that time, ಮದಕಾಮವಿವರ್ಧಿನೀ inflaming passion and pride, ಪ್ರಾವೃಟ್ rainy season, ಅನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ had set in.

O Kausalya, you were not married then. I was prince regent. The rainy season that inflames passion and pride had just set in.
ಉಪಾಸ್ಯ ಚ ರಸಾನ್ಭೌಮಾಂ ಸ್ತಪ್ತ್ವಾ ಚ ಜಗದಂಶುಭಿಃ.

ಪರೇತಾಚರಿತಾಂ ಭೀಮಾಂ ರವಿರಾವಿಶತೇ ದಿಶಮ್৷৷2.63.15৷৷


ರವಿಃ Sun, ಭೌಮಾನ್ relating to the earth, ರಸಾನ್ juices, ಉಪಾಸ್ಯ sucking, ಜಗತ್ world, ಅಂಶುಭಿಃ by the rays, ತಪ್ತ್ವಾ ಚ scorching, ಪರೇತಾ ಚರಿತಾಮ್ ranged by departed souls, ಭೀಮಾಮ್ fearful, ದಿಶಮ್ quarter, ಆವಿಶತೇ enter sattained.

Having sucked the waters of the earth and scorching the world with its rays, the Sun had entered the frightful southern quarter ranged by departed souls.
ಉಷ್ಣಮನ್ತರ್ದಧೇ ಸದ್ಯ ಸ್ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಾ ದದೃಶಿರೇ ಘನಾಃ.

ತತೋ ಜಹೃಷಿರೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ಭೇಕಸಾರಙ್ಗಬರ್ಹಿಣಃ৷৷2.63.16৷৷


ಸದ್ಯಃ instantaneously, ಉಷ್ಣಮ್ heat, ಅನ್ತರ್ದಧೇ vanished, ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಾ: glistening, ಘನಾಃ clouds, ದದೃಶಿರೇ were seen, ತತಃ thereafter, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಭೇಕಸಾರಙ್ಗಬರ್ಹಿಣಃ frogs, geese and peacocks, ಜಹೃಷಿರೇ rejoiced.

At that time the heat subsided, glistening clouds appeared. The frogs, geese and peacocks began to rejoice.
ಕ್ಲಿನ್ನ ಪಕ್ಷೋತ್ತರಾಸ್ಸ್ನಾತಾಃ ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾದಿವ ಪತತ್ರಿಣಃ.

ವೃಷ್ಟಿವಾತಾವಧೂತಾಗ್ರಾನ್ಪಾದಪಾನಭಿಪೇದಿರೇ৷৷2.63.17৷৷


ಕ್ಲಿನ್ನ ಪಕ್ಷೋತ್ತರಾಃ with the plummage moistened, ಪತತ್ರಿಣಃ birds, ಸ್ನಾತಾಃ bathed, ವೃಷ್ಟಿವಾತಾವಧೂತಾಗ್ರಾನ್
the tops shaken by wind and rain, ಪಾದಪಾನ್ trees, ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾತ್ ಇವ as if with great difficulty, ಅಭಿಪೇದಿರೇ reached.

The birds with their plummage moistened as if they had dipped in water reached with great difficulty the tops of the trees which were shaken by the wind and rain.
ಪತಿತೇನಾಮ್ಭಸಾಚ್ಛನ್ನಃ ಪತಮಾನೇನ ಚಾಸಕೃತ್.

ಆಬಭೌ ಮತ್ತಸಾರಙ್ಗಸ್ತೋಯರಾಶಿರಿವಾಚಲಃ৷৷2.63.18৷৷


ಪತಿತೇನ dropped, ಅಸಕೃತ್ ceaselessly, ಪತಮಾನೇನ dropping, ಅಮ್ಭಸಾ with rain water, ಛನ್ನಃ covered, ಮತ್ತಸಾರಙ್ಗಃ intoxicated antelopes, ಅಚಲಃ mountain, ತೋಯರಾಶಿರಿವ like a mass of water, ಅಬಭೌ looked like.

Engulfed by torrents of rain that continued to fall ceaselessly, the mountain visited by intoxicated antelopes looked like a mass of water.
ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಾರುಣವರ್ಣಾನಿ ಸ್ರೋತಾಂಸಿ ವಿಮಲಾನ್ಯಪಿ.

ಸುಸ್ರುವುರ್ಗಿರಿಧಾತುಭ್ಯಸ್ಸಭಸ್ಮಾನಿ ಭುಜಙ್ಗವತ್৷৷2.63.19৷৷


ವಿಮಲಾನ್ಯಪಿ as though the waters were pure, ಸ್ರೋತಾಂಸಿ the rapid flow, ಗಿರಿಧಾತುಭ್ಯಃ of mineral
ores, ಸಭಸ್ಮಾನಿ mixed with ashes, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಾರುಣವರ್ಣಾನಿ white and red in colour, ಭುಜಙ್ಗವತ್ like a serpent, ಸುಸ್ರುವುಃ flowed.

Although pure, the rapidly flowing water from the mountains mixed with the minerals in the soil turned white and red in colour and flowed like a serpent.
ಆಕುಲಾರುಣ ತೋಯಾನಿ ಸ್ರೋತಾಂಸಿ ವಿಮಲಾನ್ಯಪಿ.

ಉನ್ಮಾರ್ಗಜಲವಾಹಿನೀ ಬಭೂವುರ್ಜಲದಾಗಮೇ৷৷2.63.20৷৷


ಜಲದಾಗಮೇ at the advent of the rainy season, ಸ್ರೋತಾಂಸಿ streams, ವಿಮಲಾನ್ಯಪಿ although pure, ಆಕುಲಾರುಣ ತೋಯಾನಿ mixed up with marshy red soil, ಉನ್ಮಾರ್ಗಜಲವಾಹಿನೀ by flowing in different directions, ಬಭೂವುಃ became.

The streams that were pure, mixed with red soil flowed red, deviating from their natural course.
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನತಿಸುಖೇ ಕಾಲೇ ಧನುಷ್ಮಾನಿಷುಮಾನ್ರಥೀ.

ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮಕೃತಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಸ್ಸರಯೂಮನ್ವಗಾಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.63.21৷৷


ಅತಿಸುಖೇ highly delightful, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಾಲೇ in that season, ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮಕೃತಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಃ determined to go hunting, ಧನುಷ್ಮಾನ್ holding bow, ಇಷುಮಾನ್ holding arrows, ರಥೀ a charioteer, ಸರಯೂನದೀಮ್ river Sarayu, ಅನ್ವಗಾಮ್ went.

In that highly delightful season, wishing to go hunting I, armed with bow and arrows, rode my chariot towards river Sarayu.
ನಿಪಾನೇ ಮಹಿಷಂ ರಾತ್ರೌ ಗಜಂ ವಾಭ್ಯಾಗತಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಅನ್ಯಂ ವಾ ಶ್ವಾಪದಂ ಕಞ್ಚಿಜ್ಜಿಘಾಂಸು ರಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ.

ತಸ್ಮಿಂ ಸ್ತತ್ರಾಹಮೇಕಾನ್ತೇ ರಾತ್ರೌ ವಿವೃತಕಾರ್ಮುಕಃ৷৷2.63.22৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ without any control over my senses, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ there, ನಿಪಾನೇ in a spot for
drinking water, ನದೀಮ್ river, ರಾತ್ರೌ in the night, ಅಭ್ಯಾಗತಮ್ having arrived, ಮಹಿಷಮ್ buffalo, ಗಜಂ ವಾ or elephant, ಅನ್ಯಮ್ any other, ಶ್ವಾಪದಂ ವಾ any wild animal, ಜಿಘಾಂಸುಃ desirous of killing, ತತ್ರ there, ರಾತ್ರೌ in the night, ಏಕಾನ್ತೇ in a lonely place, ವಿವೃತಕಾರ್ಮುಕಃ with bow strung.

And there, with no control over my senses, I hid in a lonely place with my bow in readiness intending to shoot a buffalo or an elephant or any other wild animal that might come to the spot for drinking water in the night.
ತತ್ರಾಹಂ ಸಂವೃತಂ ವನ್ಯಂ ಹತವಾಂಸ್ತೀರಮಾಗತಮ್.

ಅನ್ಯಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಮೃಗಂ ಹಿಂಸ್ರಂ ಶಬ್ದಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾಭ್ಯುಪಾಗತಮ್৷৷2.63.23৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತೀರಮ್ ಆಗತಮ್ reached the bank of the river, ವನ್ಯಮ್ forest, ಅಭ್ಯುಪಾಗತಮ್
arrived, ಅನ್ಯಮ್ some other, ಹ್ರಿಂಸ್ರಮ್ cruel, ಮೃಗಂ ಚ also animal, ಶಬ್ದಮ್ sound, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಸಂವತಮ್ secretly, ಹತವಾನ್ killed.

Hiding and waiting there, following the sounds of animals I killed two animals that had reached the bank of the river.
ಅಥಾನ್ಧಕಾರೇ ತ್ವಶ್ರೌಷಂ ಜಲೇ ಕುಮ್ಭಸ್ಯ ಪೂರ್ಯತಃ.

ಅಚಕ್ಷುರ್ವಿಷಯೇ ಘೋಷಂ ವಾರಣಸ್ಯೇವ ನರ್ದತಃ৷৷2.63.24৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಅನ್ಧಕಾರೇ in the darkness, ಅಚಕ್ಷುರ್ವಿಷಯೇ not within the range of sight, ನರ್ದತಃ making sounds, ವಾರಣಸ್ಯೇವ like the sound of an elephant, ಜಲೇ in water, ಪೂರ್ಯತಃ being filled, ಕುಮ್ಭಸ್ಯ a pitcher, ಘೋಷಮ್ sound, ಅಶ್ರೌಷಮ್ heard.

Then at a place that was out of the range of my sight in darkness I heard the sound of a pitcher being filled with water which resembled the sound of an elephant.

ತತಃ then, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಗಜಪ್ರೇಪ್ಸುಃ wishing to get the elephant, ದೀಪ್ತಮ್ bright, ಆಶೀವಿಷೋಪಮಮ್ like a
venomous serpent, ಶರಮ್ shaft, ಉಧೃತ್ಯ ಶಬ್ದಂ ಪ್ರತಿ in the direction of the sound, ಅಭಿಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ aiming at, ಅಪಾತಯಮ್ released.

Wishing to kill the elephant, I seized my arrow glowing like a venomous snake and aimed it towards the sound.
ಅಮುಞ್ಚಂ ನಿಶಿತಂ ಬಾಣಮಹಮಾಶೀವಿಷೋಪಮಮ್.

ತತ್ರ ವಾಗುಷಸಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಾದುರಾಸೀದ್ವನೌಕಸಃ৷৷2.63.26৷৷

ಅಹಮ್ I, ಆಶೀವಿಷೋಪಮಮ್ like a venomous serpent, ನಿಶಿತಮ್ sharp, ಬಾಣಮ್ shaft, ಅಮುಞ್ಚಮ್
dischrged, ತತ್ರ there, ಉಷಸಿ in the morning twilight, ಬಾಣಾಭಿಹತಮರ್ಮಣಃ with the vital organ hit by the shaft, ತೋಯೇ in water, ಪತತಃ falling, ವನೌಕಸಃ forest-dweller, ಹಾ ಹಾ ಇತಿ saying 'Alas!', ವ್ಯಕ್ತಾ screaming aloud, ವಾಕ್ words, ಪ್ರಾದುರಾಸೀತ್ arose.

Then I discharged a sharp shaft like a venomous serpent. In the morning twilight I saw that the shaft had hit the vital part of the body of a forest dweller and his cry of 'Alas!', was clearly heard as he fell in the water.
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನಿಪತಿತೇ ಬಾಣೇ ವಾಗಭೂತ್ತತ್ರ ಮಾನುಷೀ.

ಕಥಮಸ್ಮದ್ವಿಧೇ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಂ ನಿಪತೇತ್ತು ತಪಸ್ವಿನಿ৷৷2.63.28৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ when that, ಬಾಣೇ arrow, ನಿಪತಿತೇ fell, ತತ್ರ there, ಮಾನುಷೀ man's, ವಾಕ್ voice, ಅಭೂತ್ came, ಅಸ್ಮದ್ವಿಧೇ with people like me, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಿ at a sage, ಶಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ arrow, ಕಥಮ್ how, ನಿಪತೇತ್ತು can be discharged?

When the arrow hit him, a man's voice was heard saying, 'How can an arrow be discharged at a person like me who is an ascetic?'
ಪ್ರವಿವಿಕ್ತಾಂ ನದೀಂ ರಾತ್ರಾವುದಾಹಾರೋಹಮಾಗತಃ.

ಇಷುಣಾಭಿಹತಃ ಕೇನ ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾ ಕಿಂ ಕೃತಂ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.63.29৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಉದಾಹಾರಃ in order to take water, ರಾತ್ರೌ at night, ಪ್ರವಿವಿಕ್ತಾಮ್ lonely, ನದೀಮ್ river, ಆಗತಃ have come, ಇಷುಣಾ by an arrow, ಕೇನ by whom, ಅಭಿಹತಃ hit, ಮಯಾ by me, ಕಸ್ಯ to any, ಕಿಮ್ what offence, ಕೃತಮ್ done.

'I have come to this lonely spot of the river to take water. Who has hit me with this arrow? What (harm) have I done to any one?'
ಋಷೇರ್ಹಿನ್ಯಸ್ತದಣ್ಡಸ್ಯ ವನೇ ವನ್ಯೇನ ಜೀವತಃ.

ಕಥಂ ನು ಶಸ್ರೇಣ ವಧೋ ಮದ್ವಿಧಸ್ಯ ವಿಧೀಯತೇ৷৷2.63.30৷৷


ನ್ಯಸ್ತದಣ್ಡಸ್ಯ renouncing violence, ವನೇ in the forest, ವನ್ಯೇನ forest produce ಜೀವತಃsubsisting,
ಮದ್ವಿಧಸ್ಯ men like me, ಋಷೇಃ for an ascetic, ಶಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ with weapon, ವಧಃ killing, ಕಥಂ ನು in what way?, ವಿಧೀಯತೇ is perpetrated.

'Renouncing violence I live the life of an ascetic on forest produce. Why should any one kill me with a weapon?
ಜಟಾಭಾರಧರಸ್ಯೈವ ವಲ್ಕಲಾಜಿನವಾಸಸಃ.

ಕೋ ವಧೇನ ಮಮರ್ಥೀ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ಕಿಂವಾಸ್ಯಾಪಕೃತಂ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.63.31৷৷


ಜಟಾಭಾರಧರಸ್ಯೈವ with matted hair, ವಲ್ಕಲಾಜಿನವಾಸಸಃ wearing bark and skin of an antelope, ಮಮ my, ವಧೇನ by killing, ಅರ್ಥೀ interested, ಕಃ who?, ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಮಯಾ could be?, ಅಸ್ಯ to him, ಕಿಂ ವಾ what, ಅಪಕೃತಮ್ harm?

'Who wants to kill me who lives like an ascetic with matted hair and wearing bark or the skin of an antelope? What harm have I done to him?
ಏವಂ ನಿಷ್ಫಲಮಾರಬ್ಧಂ ಕೇವಲಾನರ್ಥಸಂಹಿತಮ್.

ನ ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ಸಾಧು ಮನ್ಯೇತ ಯಥೈವ ಗುರುತಲ್ಪಗಮ್৷৷2.63.32৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಕೇವಲಾನರ್ಥಸಂಹಿತಮ್ only for mischief, ನಿಷ್ಫಲಮ್ fruitless, ಆರಬ್ಧಮ್ effort, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್
some one, ಗುರುತಲ್ಪಗಂ ಯಥೈವ like one who occupies the teacher's bed, ಸಾಧು ಮನ್ಯೇತ will consider this proper.

'Whoever it is, he has committed only a mischievous and senseless act. This sin like a disciple sleeping on the bed of his preceptor none will approve of.
ನಾಹಂ ತಥಾನು ಶೋಚಾಮಿ ಜೀವಿತಕ್ಷಯಮಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಮಾತರಂ ಪಿತರಂ ಚೋಭಾವನುಶೋಚಾಮಿ ಮದ್ವಧೇ৷৷2.63.33৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಆತ್ಮನಃ my own, ಜೀವಿತಕ್ಷಯಮ್ loss of life, ತಥಾ not so much, ನಾನುಶೋಚಾಮಿ do not regret, ಮದ್ವಧೇ after my killing, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ಪಿತರಂ ಚ and father, ಉಭೌ both, ಅನುಶೋಚಾಮಿ I am grieving.

'I do not regret so much about the loss of my own life as about my mother and father after I am dead.
ತದೇತನ್ಮಿಥುನಂ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ಚಿರಕಾಲಭೃತಂ ಮಯಾ.

ಮಯಿ ಪಞ್ಚತ್ವಮಾಪನ್ನೇ ಕಾಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.63.34৷৷


ಮಯಿ when I, ಪಞ್ಚತ್ವಮ್ with five elements, ಆಪನ್ನೇ reduced to, ಮಯಾ by me, ಚಿರಕಾಲಭೃತಮ್ supported for a long time, ವೃದ್ಧಮ್ in old age, ಏತತ್ this, ಮಿಥುನಮ್ couple, ಕಾಮ್ what, ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ life, ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will live in future.

'So long I have been supporting this aged couple. After I am dead, how will they live?
ವೃದ್ಧೈ ಚ ಮತಾಪಿತರಾವಹಂ ಚೈಕೇಷುಣಾ ಹತಾ.

ಕೇನ ಸ್ಮನಿಹತಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಸುಬಾಲೇನಾಕೃತಾತ್ಮನಾ৷৷2.63.35৷৷


ವೃದ್ಧೌ aged, ಮಾತಾಪಿತರೌ my parents, ಅಹಂ ಚ me also, ಏಕೇಷುಣಾ with one single arrow, ಹತಾಃ killed, ಅಕೃತಾತ್ಮನಾ one with malicious intention, ಸುಬಾಲೇನ by a good boy, ಕೇನ by whom, ಸರ್ವೇ ನಿಹತಾಃ ಸ್ಮ all of us are killed.

'My aged parents along with me are killed by a single arrow. Who is that malicious
knave who has slain us?
ತಾಂ ಗಿರಂ ಕರುಣಾಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಮಮ ಧರ್ಮಾನುಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣಃ.

ಕರಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಸಶರಂ ಚಾಪಂ ವ್ಯಥಿತಸ್ಯಾಪತದ್ಭುವಿ৷৷2.63.36৷৷


ಕರುಣಾಮ್ piteous, ತಾಂ ಗಿರಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on hearing, ಧರ್ಮಾನುಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣಂ keen on following the righteous path (fearing that an unrighteous act has been performed), ವ್ಯಥಿತಸ್ಯ worrying, ಮಮ my, ಕರಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ from my hands, ಸಶರಮ್ along with the arrow, ಚಾಪಮ್ bow ಭುವಿ on the land, ಅಪತತ್ fell down.

On hearing the piteous voice the bow and arrow dropped from my (trembling) hands since I was keen on following the righteous path.
ತಸ್ಯಾಹಂ ಕರುಣಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ನಿಶಿ ಲಾಲವತೋ ಬಹು.

ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತ ಶ್ಶೋಕವೇಗೇನ ಭೃಶಮಾಸಂ ವಿಚೇತನಃ৷৷2.63.37৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ನಿಶಿ at night, ಬಹು highly, ಲಾಲವತಃ lamenting, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಕರುಣಮ್ pathetic words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಶೋಕವೇಗೇನ through excess of grief, ಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಃ frightened, ಭೃಶಮ್ extremely, ವಿಚೇತನಃ unable to think, ಆಸಮ್ I remained.

Having heard his pathetic lamentations at night, I was extremely frightened by the force of grief and stood bewildered.
ತಂ ದೇಶಮಹಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ದೀನಸತ್ತ್ವಸ್ಸುದುರ್ಮನಾಃ.

ಅಪಶ್ಯಮಿಷುಣಾ ತೀರೇ ಸರಯ್ವಾಸ್ತಾಪಸಂ ಹತಮ್৷৷2.63.38৷৷

ಅವಕೀರ್ಣ ಜಟಾಭಾರಂ ಪ್ರವಿದ್ಧಕಲಶೋದಕಮ್.

ಪಾಂಸುಶೋಣಿತದಿಗ್ಧಾಙ್ಗಂ ಶಯಾನಂ ಶಲ್ಯಪೀಡಿತಮ್৷৷2.63.39৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ದೀನಸತ್ತ್ವಃ in a dissipated state, ಸುದುರ್ಮನಾಃ with troubled mind, ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ that place, ಆಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ಸರಯ್ವಾಃ Sarayu, ತೀರೇ on the bank, ಇಷುಣಾ by the arrow, ಹತಮ್ struck,
ಅವಕೀರ್ಣಜಟಾಭಾರಮ್ with scattered locks of hair, ಪ್ರವಿದ್ಧಕಲಶೋದಕಮ್ with water pitcher thrown away, ಪಾಂಸುಶೋಣಿತದಿಗ್ಧಾಙ್ಗಮ್ body smeared with blood and dust, ಶಯಾನಮ್ lying, ಶಲ್ಯಪೀಡಿತಮ್ pierced by the arrow, ತಾಪಸಮ್ the sage, ಅಪಶ್ಯಮ್ I saw.

With dissipated energy and intensely troubled mind, I reached the bank of river Sarayu and there I saw the ascetic lying struck by the arrow and with scattered locks of hair. The water pitcher was thrown away and his body smeared with blood and dust as he lay on the ground.
ಸ ಮಾಮುದ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ನೇತ್ರಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ತ್ರಸ್ತಮಸ್ವಸ್ಥಚೇತಸಮ್.

ಇತ್ಯುವಾಚ ತತಃ ಕ್ರೂರಂ ದಿಧಕ್ಷನ್ನಿವ ತೇಜಸಾ৷৷2.63.40৷৷


ಸಃ he, ತ್ರಸ್ತಮ್ frightened, ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥಚೇತಸಮ್ shaken up mentally, ಮಾಮ್ me, ತೇಜಸಾ with his energy, ದಿಧಕ್ಷನ್ನಿವ as if burning, ನೇತ್ರಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with both eyes, ಉವದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ looked up, ತತಃ then, ಕ್ರೂರಮ್ cruel, ಇತಿ thus, ಉವಾಚ said.

I was mentally stricken and frightened. He looked up as if buring me with the energy of his eyes. Then he uttered the words 'A cruel act!'
ಕಿಂ ತವಾಪಕೃತಂ ರಾಜನ್ವನೇ ನಿವಸತಾ ಮಯಾ.

ಜಿಹೀರ್ಷುರಮ್ಭೋ ಗುರ್ವುರ್ಥಂ ಯದಹಂ ತಾಡಿತಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.63.41৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಗುರ್ವರ್ಥಮ್ for the sake of my parents, ಅಮ್ಭ: water, ಜಿಹೀರ್ಷುಃ wishing to take, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತ್ವಯಾ you, ತಾಡಿತಃ have been struck, ವನೇ in the forest, ನಿವಸತಾ residing, ಮಯಾ by me, ತವ your, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಅಪಕೃತಮ್ harm.

'O king! you have struck me when I was trying to carry water to my parents. I am a forest-dweller. What harm have I done to you?
ಏಕೇನ ಖಲು ಬಾಣೇನ ಮರ್ಮಣ್ಯಭಿಹತೇ ಮಯಿ.

ದ್ವಾವನ್ಧೌ ನಿಹತೌ ವೃದ್ಧೌ ಮಾತಾ ಜನಯಿತಾ ಚ ಮೇ৷৷2.63.42৷৷


ಏಕೇನ by one, ಬಾಣೇನ arrow, ಮಯಿ at me, ಮರ್ಮಣಿ vital part, ಅಭಿಹತೇ when struck, ಮೇ my, ಮಾತಾ mother, ಜನಯಿತಾ ಚ father, ಅನ್ಧೌ blind, ದ್ವೌ both, ವೃದ್ಧೌ old ones, ನಿಹತೌ ಖಲು are killed indeed.

'By striking at the vital part of my body with one arrow, you have killed both my aged and blind mother and father too.
ತೌ ಕಥಂ ದುರ್ಬಲಾವನ್ಧೌ ಮತ್ಪ್ರತೀಕ್ಷೌ ಪಿಪಾಸಿತೌ.

ಚಿರಮಾಶಾಕೃತಾಂ ತೃಷ್ಣಾಂ ಕಷ್ಟಾಂ ಸನ್ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯತಃ৷৷2.63.43৷৷


ದುರ್ಬಲೌ weak ones, ಅನ್ಧೌ blind, ಪಿಪಾಸಿತೌ thirsty, ತೌ both of them, ಕಷ್ಟಾಮ್ difficult, ಆಶಾಕೃತಾಮ್ due to expectation, ತೃಷ್ಣಾಮ್ thirst, ಚಿರಮ್ for a long time, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಸನ್ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯತಃ will control.

'How will the two who are frail, thirsty and blind wait for me for long controlling their thirst with great difficulty with the expectation (that I would fetch them water)?
ನ ನೂನಂ ತಪಸೋ ವಾಸ್ತಿ ಫಲಯೋಗಶ್ಶ್ರುತಸ್ಯ ವಾ.

ಪಿತಾ ಯನ್ಮಾಂ ನ ಜಾನಾತಿ ಶಯಾನಂ ಪತಿತಂ ಭುವಿ৷৷2.63.44৷৷


ನೂನಮ್ surely, ತಪಸೋ ವಾ either for asceticism, ಶ್ರುತಸ್ಯ ವಾ or for scriptural knowledge, ಫಲಯೋಗಃ attainment of fruit, ನಾಸ್ತಿ not there, ಯತ್ since, ಪಿತಾ my father, ಭುವಿ on this earth, ಪತಿತಮ್ fallen, ಶಯಾನಮ್ lying, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನ ಜಾನಾತಿ not know.

'My father does not know that I am lying on the ground. It is true that there is no reward either for asceticism or for scriptural knowledge.
ಜಾನನ್ನಪಿ ಚ ಕಿಂ ಕುರ್ಯಾದಶಕ್ತಿರಪರಿಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಭಿದ್ಯಮಾನಮಿವಾಶಕ್ತ ಸ್ತ್ರತುಮನ್ಯೋ ನಗೋ ನಗಮ್৷৷2.63.45৷৷


ಅಶಕ್ತಿ: without energy, ಅಪರಿಕ್ರಮಃ who cannot walk, ಭಿದ್ಯಮಾನಮ್ being severed, ನಗಮ್ tree, ತ್ರಾತುಮ್ to protect, ಅಶಕ್ತಃ is incapable, ಅನ್ಯಃ other, ನಗಃ tree, ಇವ like, ಜಾನನ್ನಪಿ knowing also, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಕುರ್ಯಾತ್ can it do?

'What can my weak father who has no strength to walk do, even if he knows about it? Like a tree which cannot protect another which is being severed, he is helpless.
ಪಿತುಸ್ತ್ವಮೇವ ಮೇ ಗತ್ವಾ ಶೀಘ್ರಮಾಚಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಘವ.

ನ ತ್ವಾಮನುದಹೇತ್ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೋ ವನಂ ವಹ್ನಿರಿವೈಧಿತಃ৷৷2.63.46৷৷


ರಾಘವ O scion of the Raghus (Dasaratha)!, ತ್ವಮೇವ you yourself, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಮೇ ಪಿತುಃ to my father, ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ inform, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧ in wrath, ಏಧಿತಃ ignited, ವಹ್ನಿಃ fire, ವನಮಿವ like a forest, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನಾನುದಹೇತ್ will not be burnt.

O scion of the Raghus (Dasaratha)! Go at once and inform my father, lest in anger he
should burn you like ignited fire consuming the forest.
ಇಯಮೇಕಪದೀ ರಾಜನ್ಯತೋ ಮೇ ಪಿತುರಾಶ್ರಮಃ.

ತಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದಯ ಗತ್ವಾ ತ್ವಂ ನ ತ್ವಾಂ ಸ ಕುಪಿತಶ್ಶಪೇತ್৷৷2.63.47৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಯತಃ from whichever side, ಮೇ ಪಿತುಃ my father's, ಆಶ್ರಮಃ hermitage, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಏಕಪದೀ footpath, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ತಮ್ him, ಪ್ರಸಾದಯ beg his forgiveness, ಸಃ he, ಕುಪಿತಃ in wrath, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನ ಶಪೇತ್ may not curse.

'O king, this footpath leads to my father's hermitage. Go and beg his forgiveness so that he may not curse you out of anger.
ವಿಶಲ್ಯಂ ಕುರು ಮಾಂ ರಾಜನ್ಮರ್ಮ ಮೇ ನಿಶಿತಶ್ಶರಃ.

ರುಣದ್ಧಿ ಮೃದುಸೋತ್ಸೇಧಂ ತೀರಮಮ್ಬುರಯೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.63.48৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಮಾಮ್ me, ವಿಶಲ್ಯಮ್ with weapon taken out, ಕುರು make, ನಿಶಿತಃ sharp, ಶರಃ arrow, ಮೇ ಮರ್ಮ my vital part of the body, ಮೃದು gently, ಸೋತ್ಸೇಧಮ್ elevated, ತೀರಮ್ bank, ಅಮ್ಬುರಯಃ like the flow of water, ಯಥಾ in the same manner, ರುಣದ್ಧಿ is preventing.

'Gently remove the arrow from my body, O king! the sharp arrow is piercing deep into
my vital just like the current of the river hits its elevated bank'.
ಸಶಲ್ಯಃ ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯತೇ ಪ್ರಾಣೈರ್ವಿಶಲ್ಯೋ ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಇತಿ ಮಾಮವಿಶಚ್ಚಿನ್ತಾ ತಸ್ಯ ಶಲ್ಯಾಪಕರ್ಷಣೇ৷৷2.63.49৷৷


ಸಶಲ್ಯಃ one with a weapon piercing the body, ಪ್ರಾಣೈಃ life, ಕ್ಲಿಶ್ಯತೇ is pained, ವಿಶಲ್ಯಃ if the arrow is removed, ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ he will die, ಇತಿ ಚಿನ್ತಾ with this thought, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಶಪಕರ್ಷಣೇ in removing the arrow, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅವಿಶತ್ has entered.

The thought of removing the arrow kept me pondering. If not removed, it will be painful, and if removed, he will die.
ದುಃಖಿತಸ್ಯ ಚ ದೀನಸ್ಯ ಮಮ ಶೋಕಾತುರಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಲಕ್ಷಯಾಮಾಸ ಹೃದಯೇ ಚಿನ್ತಾಂ ಮುನಿಸುತಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.63.50৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಮುನಿಸುತಃ son of the ascetic, ದುಃಖಿತಸ್ಯ of a distressed man, ದೀನಸ್ಯ wretched, ಶೋಕಾತುರಸ್ಯ ಚ full of grief, ಮಮ my, ಹೃದಯೇ in the heart, ಚಿನ್ತಾಮ್ anguish, ಲಕ್ಷಯಾಮಾಸ perceived.

The son of the ascetic noticed my anguish and seeing me thus distressed, wretched and afflicted with sorrow, said:

ಸೀದಮಾನೋ ವಿವೃತ್ತಾಙ್ಗೋ ವೇಷ್ಟಮಾನೋ ಗತಃ ಕ್ಷಯಮ್৷৷2.63.51৷৷


ತಾಮ್ಯಮಾನಃ tormented, ಸೀದಮಾನಃ plunging into death, ವಿವೃತ್ತಾಙ್ಗಃ with twisted limbs, ವೇಷ್ಟಮಾನಃ writhing, ಕ್ಷಯಮ್ destruction, ಗತಃ having reached, ಸಃ he, ಪರಮಾರ್ತವತ್ intensely grieved, ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾತ್ with difficulty, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಉವಾಚ said.

Suffering from excruciating pain, sinking with his limbs twisting and writhing and plunging into death and destruction, with intense agony he uttered the following words with great difficulty:
ಸಂಸ್ತಭ್ಯ ಶೋಕಂ ಧೈರ್ಯೇಣ ಸ್ಥಿರಚಿತ್ತೋ ಭವಾಮ್ಯಹಮ್.

ಅಹಮ್ I, ಧೈರ್ಯೇಣ patiently, ಶೋಕಮ್ sorrow, ಸಂಸ್ತಭ್ಯ restraining, ಸ್ಥಿರಚಿತ್ತಃ with a firm mind, ಭವಾಮಿ I am, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಹತ್ಯಾಕೃತಮ್ killed a brahmin, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಹೃದಯಾತ್ from your mind, ಅಪನೀಯತಾಮ್ may be removed.

'I am now calm. I bear my pain with patience. Remove the fear from your mind that you have committed a sin by slaying a brahmin.
ನ ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿರಹಂ ರಾಜನ್ಮಾ ಭೂತ್ತೇ ಮನಸೋ ವ್ಯಥಾ.

ಶೂದ್ರಾಯಾಮಸ್ಮಿ ವೈಶ್ಯೇನ ಜಾತೋ ಜನಪದಾಧಿಪ!৷৷2.63.53৷৷


ಜನಪದಾಧಿಪ! O Lord of the land (Dasaratha), ರಾಜನ್ king, ನ not, ಅಹಮ್ I am, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಃ a brahmin, ನ not, ತೇ your, ಮನಸಃ to mind, ವ್ಯಥಾ fear, ಮಾಭೂತ್ may not happen, ವೈಶ್ಯೇನ by a vaisya, ಶೂದ್ರಾಯಾಮ್ to a sudra woman, ಜಾತಃ born, ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am.

'O king Dasaratha, lord of the land, I am not a brahmin. Feel no sense of guilt in your mind. I was born of a sudra mother and a vaisya father.
ಇತೀವ ವದತಃ ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾದ್ಬಾಣಾಭಿಹತಮರ್ಮಣಃ ವಿಘೂರ್ಣತೋ ವಿಚೇಷ್ಟಸ್ಯ ವೇಪಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಭೂತಲೇ.

ತಸ್ಯತ್ವಾನಮ್ಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ ತಂ ಬಾಣಮಹಮುದ್ಧರಮ್ ಸ ಮಾಮುದ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತೋ ಜಹೌ ಪ್ರಾಣಾಂಸ್ತಪೋಧನಃ৷৷2.63.54৷৷


ಇತೀವ in this way, ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾತ್ with great difficulty, ವದತಃ speaking, ಬಾಣಾಭಿಹತಮರ್ಮಣಃ one hit in the vital part of the body by an arrow, ವಿಘೂರ್ಣತಃ turning and twisting the body, ವಿಚೇಷ್ಟಸ್ಯ writhing in pain, ಭೂತಲೇ on the ground, ವೇಪಮಾನಸ್ಯ trembling, ಆನಮ್ಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ bent, ತಸ್ಯತ from there, ಬಾಣಮ್ that arrow, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಉದ್ಧರಮ್ pulled out, ಸಃ ತಪೋಧನಃ that sage whose asceticism is his wealth, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಉದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having looked up, ಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಃ frightened, ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ life, ಜಹೌ gave up.

While that ascetic struck by the arrow in the vital part of the body, trembling, turning
and rolling on the ground writhing in pain spoke these words to me, I bent down and pulled out the arrow from his body. I was frightened when he looked up at me and gave up his life.
ಜಲಾರ್ದ್ರಗಾತ್ರನ್ತು ವಿಲಪ್ಯ ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾನ್ಮರ್ಮವ್ರಣಂ ಸನ್ತತಮುಚ್ಛವಸನ್ತಮ್.

ತತ ಸ್ಸರಯ್ವಾಂ ತಮಹಂ ಶಯಾನಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಭದ್ರೇಸ್ಮಿ ಭೃಶಂ ವಿಷಣ್ಣಃ৷৷2.63.55৷৷


ಭದ್ರೇ O gentle one, (ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya), ಜಲಾರ್ದ್ರಗಾತ್ರಮ್ body drenched in water, ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಾತ್ due to pain, ವಿಲಪ್ಯ lamenting, ಸನ್ತತಮ್ ceaselessly, ಉಚ್ಛವಸನ್ತಮ್ sighing, ಮರ್ಮವ್ರಣಮ್ wound in the vital part, ಸರಯ್ವಾಮ್ on the bank of river Sarayu, ಶಯಾನಮ್ lying, ತಮ್ him, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತತಃ then, ಭೃಶಮ್ greatly, ವಿಷಣ್ಣಃ dejected, ಅಸ್ಮಿ I was.

O gentle Kausalya! having seen him crying due to the pain caused by the wound in the vital part, sighing ceaselessly, drenched in water and lying on the bank of river Sarayu, I was greatly shaken.
