[Dasaratha relates to Kausalya the event of the noble ascetic's curse on him --- death of Dasaratha]

ವಧಮಪ್ರತಿರೂಪಂ ತು ಮಹರ್ಷೇಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಘವಃ.

ವಿಲಪನ್ನೇವ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಪುನರಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.64.1৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ the righteous one, ರಾಘವಃ descendant of the Raghu's (Dasaratha), ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹರ್ಷೇಃ that maharsi's, ಅಪ್ರತಿರೂಪಮ್ unique, ವಧಮ್ killing, ವಿಲಪನ್ನೇವ while lamenting, ಪುನಃ again, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ to Kausalya, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Grieving for having unfairly killed the great sage the rightenous descendant of the Raghus (Dasaratha) coutinued to tell Kausalya about it:
ತದಜ್ಞಾನಾನ್ಮಹತ್ಪಾಪಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾಹಂ ಸಙ್ಕುಲೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ.

ಏಕಸ್ತ್ವಚಿನ್ತಯಂ ಬುಧ್ಯಾ ಕಥಂ ನು ಸುಕೃತಂ ಭವೇತ್৷৷2.64.2৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ in ignorance, ತತ್ that, ಮಹತ್ great, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having done, ಸಙ್ಕುಲೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ with agitated senses, ಏಕಸ್ತು myself alone, ಕಥಂ ನು how, ಸುಕೃತಮ್ well done, ಭವೇತ್ shall be, ಬುಧ್ಯಾ in my mind, ಅಚಿನ್ತಯಮ್ reflected.

Having committed the sin unwittingly, I was greatly agitated. I reflected in my mind as
to how to atone for this great sin.
ತತಸ್ತಂ ಘಟಮಾದಾಯ ಪೂರ್ಣಂ ಪರಮವಾರಿಣಾ.

ಆಶ್ರಮಂ ತಮಹಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಯಥಾಖ್ಯಾತಪಥಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.64.3৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಪರಮವಾರಿಣಾ with clean water, ಪೂರ್ಣಮ್ filled, ತಮ್ that, ಘಟಮ್ pot ಆದಾಯ taking hold of, ಯಥಾಖ್ಯಾತಪಥಮ್ the path as directed, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having reached, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಗತಃ entered.

Holding the pot filled with clean water I reached the hermitage following the path as directed.
ತತ್ರಾಹಂ ದುರ್ಬಲಾವನ್ಧೌ ವೃದ್ಧಾವಪರಿಣಾಯಕೌ.

ಅಪಶ್ಯಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಪಿತರೌ ಲೂನಪಕ್ಷಾವಿವ ದ್ವಿಜೌ৷৷2.64.4৷৷

ತನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಾಭಿರಾಸೀನೌ ಕಥಾಭಿರಪರಿಶ್ರಮೌ.

ತಾಮಾಶಾಂ ಮತ್ಕೃತೇ ಹೀನಾವುದಾಸೀನಾವನಾಥವತ್৷৷2.64.5৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಅಹಮ್ I, ದುರ್ಬಲೌ frail, ಅನ್ಧೌ blind, ವೃದ್ಧೌ old, ಅಪರಿಣಾಯಕೌ without any supporter, ಲೂನಪಕ್ಷೌ with wings severed, ದ್ವಿಜೌ ಇವ like birds, ತನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಾಭಿಃ on account of their son, ಕಥಾಭಿಃ with stories, ಆಸೀನೌ seated, ಅಪರಿಶ್ರಮೌ without any work, ಮತ್ಕೃತೇ done by me, ತಾಮ್ ಆಶಾಮ್ their hope, ಹೀನೌ deprived of, ಅನಾಥವತ್ like orphans, ಉದಾಸೀನೌ passive, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಪಿತರೌ parents, ಅಪಶ್ಯಮ್ I saw.

There I found his weak, blind, old parents. With no supporter, they looked like birds with clipped wings. They sat there helplessly like orphans and passively talking about their son, their only hope that I have deprived them of.
ಶೋಕೋಪಹತಚಿತ್ತಶ್ಚ ಭಯಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಚೇತನಃ.

ತಚ್ಚಾಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಭೂಯಶ್ಶೋಕಮಹಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.64.6৷৷


ಶೋಕೋಪಹತ ಚಿತ್ತಃ ಚ with mind smitten with grief, ಭಯಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಚೇತನಃ mind charged with apprehension, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತತ್ that, ಆಶ್ರಮಪದಮ್ hermitage, ಗತ್ವಾ having reached, ಭೂಯಃ once again, ಶೋಕಮ್ sorrow, ಗತಃ obtained.

Smitten with grief and my heart throbbing with fear I reached the hermitage and my sorrow became manifold.
ಪದಶಬ್ದಂ ತು ಮೇ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಮುನಿರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಭಾಷತ.

ಕಿಂ ಚಿರಾಯಸಿ ಮೇ ಪುತ್ರ! ಪಾನೀಯಂ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾನಯ৷৷2.64.7৷৷


ಮೇ my, ಪದಶಬ್ದಮ್ sound of footsteps, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಮುನಿಃ sage, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಭಾಷತ spoke this, ಪುತ್ರ! son, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಚಿರಾಯಸಿ are you delaying, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಮೇ to me, ಪಾನೀಯಮ್ water, ಆನಯ bring.

Hearing the sound of my footsteps, the sage said 'O son! why have you delayed? Bring me some water quickly'.
ಯನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮಿದಂ ತಾತ! ಸಲಿಲೇ ಕ್ರೀಡಿತಂ ತ್ವಯಾ.

ಉತ್ಕಣ್ಠಿತಾ ತೇ ಮಾತೇಯಂ ಪ್ರವಿಶ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾಶ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.64.8৷৷


ತಾತ! O Dear child, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಯನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ for whatever reason, ಸಲಿಲೇ in the water, ಇದಮ್ this, ಕ್ರೀಡಿತಮ್ sported, ಇಯಮ್ this, ತೇ ಮಾತಾ your mother, ಉತ್ಕಣ್ಠಿತಾ with anxicty, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಪ್ರವಿಶ enter.

'O Dear child, whatever be the reason, you have been sporting in the water so long, come at once to the hermitage. Your mother is anxious.
ಯದ್ವ್ಯಲೀಕಂ ಕೃತಂ ಪುತ್ರ! ಮಾತ್ರಾ ತೇ ಯದಿ ವಾ ಮಯಾ.

ನ ತನ್ಮನಸಿ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ತಾತ! ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾ৷৷2.64.9৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! son, ತೇ your, ಮಾತ್ರಾ mother, ಯದಿವಾ or, ಮಯಾ by myself, ಯತ್ any, ವ್ಯಲೀಕಮ್ displeasing act, ಕೃತಮ್ has been done, ತಾತ! O Child, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾ by being ascetic, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ತತ್ that one,
ಮನಸಿ in the mind, ನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಮ್ should not be taken seriously.

'O Child, O Son! if your mother or I have done anything disagreeable, do not take it to heart, for you are an ascetic.
ತ್ವಂ ಗತಿಸ್ತ್ವಗತೀನಾಂ ಚಕ್ಷುಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಹೀನಚಕ್ಷುಷಾಮ್.

ಸಮಾಸಕ್ತಾಸ್ತ್ವಯಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಾಃ ಕಿಂ ತ್ವಂ ನೋ ನಾಭಿಭಾಷಸೇ৷৷2.64.10৷৷


ಅಗತೀನಾಮ್ for us with no support, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಗತಿಃ are support, ಅಚಕ್ಷುಷಾಮ್ for us who have no eyes, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಚಕ್ಷುಃ ಹಿ are our eyes, ಪ್ರಾಣಾಃ our vital life, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ಸಮಾಸಕ್ತಾಃ are attached, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ನಃ to us, ಕಿಮ್ why, ನಾಭಿಭಾಷಸೇ are not talking?

'You are a support to the supportless, eyes to the blind, you are our very vital life. Why don't you speak to us'?
ಮುನಿಮವ್ಯಕ್ತಯಾ ವಾಚಾ ತಮಹಂ ಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ.

ಹೀನವ್ಯಞ್ಜನಯಾ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಭೀತಚಿತ್ತ ಇವಾಬ್ರುವಮ್৷৷2.64.11৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಂ ಮುನಿಮ್ that sage, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಭೀತಚಿತ್ತ ಇವ with a frightened mind, ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಯಾ indistinctly, ಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ stammering, ಹೀನವ್ಯಞ್ಜನಯಾ with slurring syllables, ವಾಚಾ with words, ಅಬ್ರುವಮ್ I uttered.

As I saw him, my heart was filled with terror and I stammered as I spoke in garbled sentences.
ಮನಸಃ ಕರ್ಮ ಚೇಷ್ಟಾಭಿರಭಿಸಂಸ್ತಭ್ಯ ವಾಗ್ಬಲಮ್.

ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ ತ್ವಹಂ ತಸ್ಮೈ ಪುತ್ರವ್ಯಸನಜಂ ಭಯಮ್৷৷2.64.12৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಚೇಷ್ಟಾಭಿಃ with efforts, ಮನಸಃ mind's, ಕರ್ಮ thoughts, ವಾಗ್ಬಲಮ್ power of speech, ಅಭಿಸಂಸ್ತಭ್ಯ holding up firmly, ತಸ್ಮೈ him, ಪುತ್ರವ್ಯಸನಜಮ್ the calamity arising due to the death of his son, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ related to him.

After a lot of effort, with great fear controlling my thoughts and the power of speech, I related to him the calamity that had befallen his son.
ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೋಹಂ ದಶರಥೋ ನಾಹಂ ಪುತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಸಜ್ಜನಾವಮತಂ ದುಃಖಮಿದಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮಜಮ್৷৷2.64.13৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯಃ kshatriya, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the great, ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ನ not, ಸಜ್ಜನಾವಮತಮ್ condemnable by the virtuous, ಇದಮ್ this, ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮಜಮ್ caused out of my own
action, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrowful, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ has befallen.

O magnanimous sage! I am a kshatriya known as Dasaratha. I am not your son. A pathetic incident has been caused by my own action, condemnable by the virtuous.
ಭಗವಂಶ್ಚಾಪಹಸ್ತೋಹಂ ಸರಯೂತೀರಮಾಗತಃ.

ಜಿಘಾಂಸುಶ್ಶ್ವಾಪದಂ ಕಞ್ಚಿನ್ನಿಪಾನೇ ಚಾಗತಂ ಗಜಮ್৷৷2.64.14৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O revered one, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಚಾಪಹಸ್ತಃ bow in hand, ಕಞ್ಚಿತ್ a certain, ಶ್ವಾಪದಮ್ wild animal, ನಿಪಾನೇ drinking at the water hole, ಆಗತಮ್ which has come, ಗಜಂ ಚ an elephant, ಜಿಘಾಂಸುಃ wishing to kill, ಸರಯೂತೀರಮ್ to the bank of river Sarayu, ಆಗತಃ arrived.

Wishing to hunt a wild elephant coming down to the water hole for drinking, I went to the bank of Sarayu, bow in hand, O revered sage!
ತತಶ್ಶ್ರುತೋ ಮಯಾ ಶಬ್ದೋ ಜಲೇ ಕುಮ್ಭಸ್ಯ ಪೂರ್ಯತಃ.

ದ್ವಿಪೋಯಮಿತಿ ಮತ್ವಾಯಂ ಬಾಣೇನಾಭಿಹತೋ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.64.15৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಮಯಾ by me, ಜಲೇ in the water, ಪೂರ್ಯತಃ being filled, ಕುಮ್ಭಸ್ಯ pot's, ಶಬ್ದಃ sound, ಶ್ರುತಃ was heard, ಅಯಮ್ this one, ದ್ವಿಪಃ ಇತಿ taking for an elephant, ಮತ್ವಾ having thought, ಅಯಮ್ he, ಮಯಾ by me, ಬಾಣೇನ with arrow, ಅಭಿಹತಃ was killed.

There I heard the sound of a pot being filled with water and mistaking it to be an elephant's, shot an arrow.
ಗತ್ವಾ ನದ್ಯಾಸ್ತತ ಸ್ತೀರಮಪಶ್ಯಮಿಷುಣಾ ಹೃದಿ.

ವಿನಿರ್ಭಿನ್ನಂ ಗತಪ್ರಾಣಂ ಶಯಾನಂ ಭುವಿ ತಾಪಸಮ್৷৷2.64.16৷৷


ತತಃ then, ನದ್ಯಾಃ river's, ತೀರಮ್ bank, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಇಷುಣಾ with an arrow, ಹೃದಿ in the chest, ವಿನಿರ್ಭಿನ್ನಮ್ pierced it, ಗತಪ್ರಾಣಮ್ with ebbing life, ಭುವಿ on the ground, ಶಯಾನಮ್ lying, ತಾಪಸಮ್ an ascetic, ಅಪಶ್ಯಮ್ I beheld.

Thereafter I reached the river bank and beheld an ascetic with an arrow pierced in his chest. He was lying on the ground, his life ebbing away.
ಭಗವಚ್ಛಶಬ್ದಮಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಯಾ ಗಜಜಿಘಾಂಸುನಾ.

ವಿಸೃಪ್ಟೋಮ್ಭಸಿ ನಾರಾಚಸ್ತೇನ ತೇ ನಿಹತಸ್ಸುತಃ৷৷2.64.17৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O venerable one, ಶಬ್ದಮ್ sound, ಆಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ aiming at, ಗಜಜಿಘಾಂಸುನಾ intending to kill an elephant, ಮಯಾ by me, ಅಮ್ಭಸಿ in the water, ನಾರಾಚಃ with an arrow, ವಿಸೃಷ್ಟಃ has been released, ತೇನ by that, ತೇ your, ಸುತಃ son, ನಿಹತಃ was struck.

O venerable one! I released an arrow towards the water aiming at the sound intending to kill an elephant but it hit your son.
ತತಸ್ತಸ್ಯೈವ ವಚನಾದುಪೇತ್ಯ ಪರಿತಪ್ಯತಃ.

ಸ ಮಯಾ ಸಹಸಾ ಬಾಣ ಉಧೃತೋ ಮರ್ಮತಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.64.18৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಪರಿತಪ್ಯತಃ tormented, ತಸ್ಯೈವ by his own, ವಚನಾತ್ words, ಮಯಾ by me, ತದಾ then, ಉಪೇತ್ಯ reaching him, ಸಹಸಾ at once, ಸಃ ಬಾಣಃ that arrow, ಮರ್ಮತಃ from his vital part, ಉಧೃತಃ removed.

Then I approached him. He was suffering from excruciating pain. I pulled out at his word the arrow from his chest.
ಸ ಚೋಧೃತೇನ ಬಾಣೇನ ತತ್ರೈವ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ಭವನ್ತೌ ಪಿತರೌ ಶೋಚನ್ನನ್ಧಾವಿತಿ ವಿಲಪ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.64.19৷৷


ಸಃ ಚ he also, ಪಿತರೌ parents, ಭವನ್ತೌ about both of you, ಶೋಚನ್ while grieving, ಅನ್ಧೌ ಇತಿ saying you are blind, ವಿಲಪ್ಯ ಚ wailing, ಉಧೃತೇನ extracted, ತೇನ ಬಾಣೇನ by that arrow, ತತ್ರೈವ there itself, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heaven, ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ attained.

Grieving for both of you and crying you are blind he died as soon as the arrow was pulled out.
ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾದ್ಭವತಃ ಪುತ್ರ ಸ್ಸಹಸಾಭಿಹತೋ ಮಯಾ.

ಶೇಷಮೇವಂ ಗತೇ ಯತ್ಸ್ಯಾತ್ತತ್ಪ್ರಸೀದತು ಮೇ ಮುನಿಃ৷৷2.64.20৷৷


ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ by my ignorance, ಸಹಸಾ suddenly, ಭವತಃ ಪುತ್ರಃ your son, ಮಯಾ by me, ನಿಹತಃ was slain, ಏವಂ ಗತೇ when this has happened, ಯತ್ whatever, ಶೇಷಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ remains to be done, ತತ್ that, ಮುನಿಃ ascetic, ಪ್ರಸೀದತು be pleased.

Your son has been killed by me due to my ignorance. Since this has happened, may the ascetic be pleased to command me on the next course of action.
ಸ ತಚ್ಚ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಚಃ ಕ್ರೂರಂ ಮಯೋಕ್ತಮಘಶಂಸಿನಾ.

ನಾಶಕತ್ತೀವ್ರಮಾಯಾಸಮಕರ್ತುಂ ಭಗವಾನೃಷಿಃ৷৷2.64.21৷৷


ಭಗವಾನ್ venerable, ಸಃ ಋಷಿಃ that sage, ಅಘಶಂಸಿನಾ conveying my sinful act, ಮಯಾ by me, ಉಕ್ತಮ್ uttered, ಕ್ರೂರಮ್ cruel, ತತ್ those, ವಚಃ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ತೀವ್ರಮ್ intense, ಆಯಾಸಮ್ anguish, ಅಕರ್ತುಮ್ not to do, ನಾಶಕತ್ was not able.

The venerable sage heard my cruel words about the sinful act and was not able to seriously react. (He was stunned).
ಸ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣವದನೋ ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಃ.

ಮಾಮುವಾಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್৷৷2.64.22৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ brilliant, ಸಃ that ascetic, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣವದನಃ face filled with tears, ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ heaving sighs, ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಃ broken with grief, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded palms, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing nearby, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಉವಾಚ said.

The grief-stricken, glorious ascetic with his face filled with tears, heaving deep sighs broke down with grief and spoke to me as I was standing with folded palms.
ಯದ್ಯೇತದಶುಭಂ ಕರ್ಮ ನ ತ್ವಂ ಮೇ ಕಥಯೇಸ್ಸ್ವಯಮ್.

ಫಲೇನ್ಮೂರ್ಧಾ ಸ್ಮ ತೇ ರಾಜನ್ ಸದ್ಯ ಶ್ಶತಸಹಸ್ರಧಾ৷৷2.64.23৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಅಶುಭಮ್ inauspicious, ಏತತ್ this, ಕರ್ಮ act, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮೇ to me, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ yourself, ನ ಕಥಯೇಃ ಯದಿ not spoke, ಸದ್ಯ: right now, ತೇ your, ಮೂರ್ಧಾ your head, ಶತಸಹಸ್ರಧಾ a hundred thousand pieces, ಫಲೇತ್ ಸ್ಮ would have been split.

'O king!, hadn't you yourself broken this inauspicious news, your head would have split into a hundred thousand pieces right now.
ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೇಣ ವಧೋ ರಾಜನ್! ವಾನಪ್ರಸ್ಥೇ ವಿಶೇಷತಃ.

ಜ್ಞಾನಪೂರ್ವಂ ಕೃತ ಸ್ಸ್ಥಾನಾಚ್ಚ್ಯಾವಯೇದಪಿ ವಜ್ರಿಣಮ್৷৷2.64.24৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ king, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೇಣ by a kshatriya, ಜ್ಞಾನಪೂರ್ವಮ್ with prior knowledge, ಕೃತಃ done, ವಧಃ the act of killing, ವಿಶೇಷತಃ especially, ವಾನಪ್ರಸ್ಥೇ of a forest-dweller, ವಜ್ರಿಣಮ್ ಅಪಿ even if he is wielder of thunderbolt (Indra), ಸ್ಥಾನಾತ್ from his position, ಚ್ವಾವಯೇತ್ would overthrow.

'If a kshatriya kills any one knowingly, particularly when in vanaprastha (third stage) this sin can displace even Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt from his position, O king.
ಸಪ್ತಧಾ ತು ಫಲೇನ್ಮೂರ್ಧಾ ಮುನೌ ತಪಸಿ ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ.

ಜ್ಞಾನಾದ್ವಿಸೃಜತಶ್ಶಸ್ತ್ರಂ ತಾದೃಶೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾವಾದಿನಿ৷৷2.64.25৷৷


ತಪಸಿ observing austerities, ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ staying, ಮುನೌ at the ascetic, ತಾದೃಶೇ similar, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮವಾದಿನಿ at one who propagates self-knowledge, ಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ knowingly, ಶಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ weapon, ವಿಸೃಜತಃ discharges, ಮೂರ್ಧಾ head, ಸಪ್ತಧಾ into seven pieces, ಫಲೇತ್ will break.

'If any one deliberately discharges a weapon upon an ascetic observing austerities or on him who expounds the Vedas, his head will split into seven pieces.
ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾದ್ಧಿಕೃತಂ ಯಸ್ಮಾದಿದಂ ತೇನೈವ ಜವಸಿ.

ಅಪಿ ಹ್ಯದ್ಯ ಕುಲಂ ನ ಸ್ಯಾದಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಂ ಕುತೋ ಭವಾನ್৷৷2.64.26৷৷


ಇದಮ್ this, ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ for which reason, ಆಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ out of ignorance, ಕೃತಂ ಹಿ has been done, ತೇನೈವ that is why, ಜೀವಸಿ you will live, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮ್ Ikshvakus', ಕುಲಮಪಿ race itself, ಅದ್ಯ now, ನ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಹಿ would not have been there, ಭವಾನ್ you also, ಕುತಃ where are you

'Since you have done this unwittingly you are still alive. If it had been otherwise, your Ikshvaku race itself would have been exterminated, what to speak of you!
ನಯ ನೌ ನೃಪ! ತಂ ದೇಶಮಿತಿ ಮಾಂ ಚಾಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ.

ಅದ್ಯ ತಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛಾವಃ ಪುತ್ರಂ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದರ್ಶನಮ್৷৷2.64.27৷৷

ರುಧಿರೇಣಾವಸಿಕ್ತಾಙ್ಗಂ ಪ್ರಕೀರ್ಣಾಜಿನವಾಸಸಮ್.

ನೃಪ! king, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದರ್ಶನಮ್ for the last time to see, ರುಧಿರೇಣ in blood, ಅವಸಿಕ್ತಾಙ್ಗಮ್ his body spattered, ಪ್ರಕೀರ್ಣಾಜಿನವಾಸಸಮ್ with antelope skin in disarray, ಭುವಿ on the ground, ಶಯಾನಮ್ lying, ನಿಸ್ಸಂಜ್ಞಮ್ without senses, ಧರ್ಮರಾಜವಶಮ್ under the sway of the Lord of death, ಗತಮ್ gone, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಚ್ಛಾವಃ intend, ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ to that place, ನೌ us, ನಯ take us, ಇತಿ thus, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ ಚ spoke.

'O king! take us to that place. We wish to have the last look at him, at his garment of antelope skin in disarray, his body spattered with blood, lying on the ground unconscious under the sway of the lord of death'. Thus the sage said to me.
ಅಥಾಹಮೇಕಸ್ತಂ ದೇಶಂ ನೀತ್ವಾ ತೌ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತೌ.

ಅಸ್ಪರ್ಶಯಮಹಂ ಪುತ್ರಂ ತಂ ಮುನಿಂ ಸಹ ಭಾರ್ಯಯಾ৷৷2.64.29৷৷


ಅಥ thereupon, ಏಕಃ alone, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತೌ deeply grieved, ತೌ both of them, ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ to that place, ನೀತ್ವಾ having taken, ಭಾರ್ಯಯಾ ಸಹ along with his wife, ತಂ ಮುನಿಮ್ to that asetic, ತಂ ಪುತ್ರಮ್ their son, ಅಸ್ಪರ್ಶಯಮ್ made them touch.

Thereupon, I took both of them all by myself to that spot and made the grieving
ascetics touch the body of their son.
ತೌ ಪುತ್ರಮಾತ್ಮನ ಸ್ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೌ.

ನಿಪೇತತುಶ್ಶರೀರೇಸ್ಯ ಪಿತಾ ಚಾಸ್ಯೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷62.64.30৷৷


ತಪಸ್ವಿನೌ both the ascetics, ತೌ both, ತಮ್ their, ಆತ್ಮನಃ own, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having approached, ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟವಾ having touched, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಶರೀರೇ on body, ನಿಪೇತತುಃ fell, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಪಿತಾ ಚ father, ಇದಮ್ this way, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Both the ascetics stroking their son's body and collapsed upon it. And the father said:
ನಾಭಿವಾದಯಸೇ ಮಾದ್ಯ ನ ಚ ಮಾಮಭಿಭಾಷಸೇ.

ಕಿಂ ನು ಶೇಷೇ ತು ಭೂಮೌ ತ್ವಂ ವತ್ಸ! ಕಿಂ ಕುಪಿತೋ ಹ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.64.31৷৷


ವತ್ಸ! child, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಮಾ me, ನಾಭಿವಾದಯಸೇ you are not greeting us, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನ ಚ ಅಭಿಭಾಷಸೇ not also speaking to us, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಭೂಮೌ on this ground, ಕಿಂ ನು ಶೇಷೇ why are you lying, ಕುಪಿತಃ angry, ಕಿಮ್ ಅಸಿ why have you become?.

'O child! why are you not greeting us today nor speaking? Why are you lying on the ground? Are you angry with us?
ನ ತ್ವಹಂ ತೇ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪುತ್ರ! ಮಾತರಂ ಪಶ್ಯ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ.

ಕಿಂ ನು ನಾಲಿಙ್ಗಸೇ ಪುತ್ರ! ಸುಕುಮಾರ! ವಚೋ ವದ৷৷2.64.32৷৷


ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ O righteous, ಪುತ್ರ! son, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತೇ to you, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ dear, ನ ತು if not so, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ಪಶ್ಯ look at, ಪುತ್ರ! O son, ಕಿಂ ನು why, ನಾಲಿಙ್ಗಸೇ are not embracing, ಸುಕುಮಾರ! O tender child, ವಚಃ words, ವದ tell.

'O righteous son! if I am no longer dear to you, (at least) look at your mother. O tender child, why are you not embracing me? Speak.
ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾಪರರಾತ್ರೇಹಂ ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹೃದಯಙ್ಗಮಮ್.

ಅಧೀಯಾನಸ್ಯ ಮಧುರಂ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಂ ವಾನ್ಯದ್ವಿಶೇಷತಃ৷৷2.64.33৷৷


ಅಪರರಾತ್ರೇ in the last watch of the night, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ scriptures, ವಿಶೇಷತ: especially, ಅನ್ವದ್ವಾ any other, ಅಧೀಯಾನಸ್ಯ while reciting, ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾ or whose, ಹೃದಯಙ್ಗಮಮ್ delightful to the heart, ಮಧುರಮ್ sweet sound, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall listen?

'From whom shall I hear the sweet recitation of scriptures or other texts, delightful to my heart in the last watch of the night?
ಕೋ ಮಾಂ ಸನ್ದ್ಯಾಮುಪಾಸ್ಯೈವ ಸ್ನಾತ್ವಾ ಹುತಹುತಾಶನಃ.

ಶ್ಲಾಘಯಿಷ್ಯತ್ಯುಪಾಸೀನಃ ಪುತ್ರ ಶೋಕಭಯಾರ್ದಿತಮ್৷৷2.64.34৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O son, ಕಃ who, ಸ್ನಾತ್ವಾ after the ablution, ಸನ್ದ್ಯಾಮ್ morning Sandhya, ಉಪಾಸ್ಯೈವ having worshipped, ಹುತಹುತಾಶನಃ having offered oblations to the sacrificial fire, ಉಪಾಸೀನಃ seated near, ಶೋಕಭಯಾರ್ದಿತಮ್ tormented with sorrow and fear, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಶ್ಲಾಘಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ serve?

'O son! I am tortured with sorrow and fear. Who will serve me from now on after the ablution and the morning worship of Sandhya, followed by oblations to the sacrificial fire?
ಕನ್ದಮೂಲಫಲಂ ಹೃತ್ವಾ ಕೋ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಮಿವಾತಿಥಿಮ್.

ಭೋಜಯಿಷ್ಯತ್ಯಕರ್ಮಣ್ಯಮಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಮನಾಯಕಮ್৷৷2.64.35৷৷


ಕನ್ದಮೂಲಫಲಮ್ tubers and fruits, ಹೃತ್ವಾ having brought, ಕಃ who, ಅಕರ್ಮಣ್ಯಮ್ incapable of doing any work, ಅಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಮ್ incapable of procuring anything, ಅನಾಯಕಮ್ one who has no guide, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ dear, ಅತಿಥಿಮಿವ like a guest, ಭೋಜಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will feed?

'I am incapable of doing any work, I am unable to procure anything (to meet my needs. now). I have no guide (to help me walk my way). Who will feed me like a welcome guest with tubers and fruits?
ಇಮಾಮನ್ಧಾಂ ಚ ವೃದ್ಧಾಂ ಚ ಮಾತರಂ ತೇ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್.

ಕಥಂ ವತ್ಸ! ಭರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಕೃಪಣಾಂ ಪುತ್ರಗರ್ಧಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.64.36৷৷


ವತ್ಸ! O son, ಅನ್ಧಾಮ್ blind, ವೃದ್ಧಾಮ್ old, ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್ miserable, ಕೃಪಣಾಮ್ wretched, ಪುತ್ರಗರ್ಧಿನೀಮ್ yearning for her son, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ತೇ your, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಭರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ support her?

'O son! how can I support your wretched and pitiable mother, who is blind, old and yearning for her son?
ತಿಷ್ಠ ಮಾಂ ಮಾಗಮಃ ಪುತ್ರ! ಯಮಸ್ಯ ಸದನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ.

ಶ್ವೋ ಮಯಾ ಸಹ ಗನ್ತಾಸಿ ಜನನ್ಯಾ ಚ ಸಮೇಧಿತಃ৷৷2.64.37৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! son, ಮಾಂ ತಿಷ್ಠ stay with me, ಯಮಸ್ಯ of the lord of death, ಸದನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ to the abode, ಮಾಗಮಃ do not go, ಮಯಾ with me, ಜನನ್ಯಾ ಸಹ ಚ along with your mother also, ಸಮೇಧಿತಃ accompanied by, ಶ್ವಃ tomorrow, ಗನ್ತಾಸಿ may go.

'My dear son, stay with me, do not go (now) to the abode of Yama, (lord of death). Tomorrow accompanied by me and your mother you may!
ಉಭಾವಪಿ ಚ ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಾವನಾಥೌ ಕೃಪಣೌ ವನೇ.

ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾವಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಹೀನೌ ಯಮಕ್ಷಯಮ್৷৷2.4.38৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಹೀನೌ having been deserted, ಶೋಕಾರ್ತೌ afflicted with grief, ವನೇ in the forest, ಅನಾಥೌ without support, ಕೃಪಣೌ wretched ones, ಉಭಾವಪಿ ಚ both of us also, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ quickly, ಯಮಕ್ಷಯಮ್ to the abode of Yama, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾವಃ will go.

'Deserted by you and without any support in the forest, afflicted with grief and feeling miserable, both of us also will assuredly go to Yama's abode, quickly.
ತತೋ ವೈವಸ್ವತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಂ ಪ್ರವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಭಾರತೀಮ್.

ಕ್ಷಮತಾಂ ಧರ್ಮರಾಜೋ ಮೇ ಬಿಭೃಯಾತ್ಪಿತರಾವಯಮ್৷৷2.64.39৷৷


ತತಃ then, ವೈವಸ್ವತಮ್ lord of death, Yama, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ತಮ್ him, ಭಾರತೀಮ್ in speech, ಪ್ರವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall say, ಧರ್ಮರಾಜಃ the lord of justice, ಮೇ me, ಕ್ಷಮತಾಮ್ forgive, ಅಯಮ್ this man, ಪಿತರೌ parents, ಬಿಭೃಯಾತ್ continue to maintain.

'There seeing Yama, (lord of death), I shall say O Lord of Justice! forgive me. Let this boy continue to maintain his parents.
ದಾತುಮರ್ಹತಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಲೋಕಪಾಲೋ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಈದೃಶಸ್ಯ ಮಮಾಕ್ಷಯ್ಯಾ ಮೇಕಾಮಭಯದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್৷৷2.64.40৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ of high renown, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ಲೋಕಪಾಲಃ guardian of the worlds, ಈದೃಶಸ್ಯ of such, ಮಮ to me, ಅಕ್ಷಯ್ಯಾಮ್ unfailing, ಏಕಾಮ್ one, ಅಭಯ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್ protection from fear, ದಾತುಮ್ to give, ಅರ್ಹತಿ behoves him.

'That lord of justice, who is highly renowned, righteous and the guardian of the worlds will grant me one unfailing boon of protection from fear.
ಅಪಾಪೋಸಿ ಯದಾ ಪುತ್ರ! ನಿಹತಃ ಪಾಪಕರ್ಮಣಾ.

ತೇನ ಸತ್ಯೇನ ಗಚ್ಛಾಶು ಯೇ ಲೋಕಾಶ್ಶಸ್ತ್ರಯೋಧಿನಾಮ್৷৷2.64.41৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! O son, ಪಾಪಕರ್ಮಣಾ by a person of sinful deeds, ನಿಹತಃ killed, ಯಥಾ just as, ಅಪಾಪಃ ಅಸಿ you are sinless, ತೇನ that, ಸತ್ಯೇನ with truth, ಶಸ್ತ್ರಯೋಧಿನಾಮ್ those who fight with weapons, ಯೇ
whichever, ಲೋಕಾ: worlds, ಆಶು quickly, ಗಚ್ಛ go.

'O sinless son, you are killed by a person of sinful deeds. On this truth, quickly go to those worlds which are attained by those valiant heroes.
ಯಾನ್ತಿ ಶೂರಾ ಗತಿಂ ಯಾಂ ಚ ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮೇಷ್ವನಿವರ್ತಿನಃ.

ಹತಾಸ್ತ್ವಭಿಮುಖಾಃ ಪುತ್ರ! ಗತಿಂ ತಾಂ ಪರಮಾಂ ವ್ರಜ৷৷2.64.42৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! son, ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮೇಷು in wars, ಅನಿವರ್ತಿನಃ the men who do not retreat, ಶೂರಾಃ warriors, ಅಭಿಮುಖಾಃ ಯಾಮ್ facing the enemy, ಗತಿಮ್ ultimate state, ಯಾನ್ತಿ will attain, ತಾಮ್ that one, ಪರಮಾಮ್ supreme, ಗತಿಮ್ state, ವ್ರಜ attain.

ಯಾಂ ಗತಿಂ ಸಗರಶ್ಶೈಬ್ಯೋ ದಿಲೀಪೋ ಜನಮೇಜಯಃ.

ನಹುಷೋ ದುನ್ದುಮಾರಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಸ್ತಾಂ ಗಚ್ಛ ಪುತ್ರಕ!৷৷2.64.43৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಕ! O son, ಸಗರಃ Sagara, ಶೈಬ್ಯಃ Saibya, ದಿಲೀಪಃ Dilipa, ಜನಮೇಜಯಃ Janamejaya, ನಹುಷಃ Nahusha, ದುನ್ದುಮಾರಶ್ಚ Dundumara also, ಯಾಮ್ which, ಗತಿಮ್ state, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಃ have attained, ತಾಮ್ the same, ಗಚ್ಛ attain.

'You will attain, my son, the same supreme state achieved by Sagara, Saibya, Dilipa, Janamejaya, Nahusha and Dundumara.
ಯಾ ಗತಿ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಸಾಧೂನಾಂ ಸ್ವಾಧ್ಯಾಯಾತ್ತಪಸಾಚ ಯಾ.

ಯಾ ಭೂಮಿದಸ್ಯಾಹಿತಾಗ್ನೇರೇಕಪತ್ನೀ ವ್ರತಸ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.64.44৷৷

ಗೋಸಹಸ್ರಪ್ರದಾತೃಾಂ ಯಾ ಯಾ ಗುರುಭೃತಾಮಪಿ.

ದೇಹನ್ಯಾಸಕೃತಾಂ ಯಾ ಚ ತಾಂ ಗತಿಂ ಗಚ್ಛ ಪುತ್ರಕ!৷৷2.64.45৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಕ! O son, ಸರ್ವಸಾಧೂನಾಮ್ of all virtuous people, ಯಾ which, ಗತಿಃ state, ಸ್ವಾಧ್ಯಾಯಾತ್ with the study of Vedas, ತಪಸಾ ಚ by asceticism, ಭೂಮಿದಸ್ಯ bestowers of land as charity, ಆಹಿತಾಗ್ನೇಃ who kindle the sacred fires, ಏಕಪತ್ನೀವ್ರತಸ್ಯ ಚ of the monogamist too, ಗೋಸಹಸ್ರಪ್ರದಾತೃಾಮ್ who offer a thousand cows in charity, ಯಾ which, ಗುರುಭೃತಾಮಪಿ who nurture the venerable ones, ದೇಹನ್ಯಾಸಕತಾಮ್ for those who lay down their bodies voluntarily, ಯಾ ಚ and those, ತಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ the same state, ಗಚ್ಛ you will attain.

'You, my son, shall attain that supreme state obtained by those who are virtuous, who study the Vedas and practise asceticism.You shall attain the state merited by those bestowers of land as charity, who kindle the sacred fires, who are monoganists, who offer a thousand cows in charity, who nurture the venerable and who willingly lay down their bodies.
ನ ಹಿ ತ್ವಸ್ಮಿನ್ಕುಲೇ ಜಾತೋ ಗಚ್ಛತ್ಯಕುಶಲಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್.

ಸ ತು ಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ ಯೇನ ತ್ವಂ ನಿಹತೋ ಮಮ ಬಾನ್ಧವಃ৷৷2.64.46৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this, ಕುಲೇ family, ಜಾತಃ born, ಅಕುಶಲಾಮ್ undesirable, ಗತಿಮ್ state, ನ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ಹಿ will never go, ತು but, ಮಮ my, ಬಾನ್ಧವಃ relation, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯೇನ by whom, ನಿಹತಃ killed, ಸಃ he, ಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ will attain.

'He who has killed you will alone attain that undesirable state, a member of our family will not.'
ಏವಂ ಸ ಕೃಪಣಂ ತತ್ರ ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯತಾಸಕೃತ್.

ತತೋಸ್ಮೈ ಕರ್ತುಮುದಕಂ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಸ್ಸಹಭಾರ್ಯಯಾ৷৷2.64.47৷৷


ಸಃ he, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ತತ್ರ there, ಅಸಕೃತ್ again and again, ಕೃಪಣಮ್ piteously, ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯತ bewailed, ತತಃ then, ಅಸ್ಮೈ to him, ಭಾರ್ಯಯಾ ಸಹ along with his wife, ಉದಕಂ ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to perform funeral obsequies, ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಃ commenced.

In this way the ascetic piteously wailed again and again. Thereafter, he with his wife set about to perform the funeral obsequies of their son.
ಸ ತು ದಿವ್ಯೇನ ರೂಪೇಣ ಮುನಿಪುತ್ರಸ್ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮಭಿಃ.

ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮಧ್ಯಾರುಹತ್ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಶಕ್ರೇಣ ಸಹ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್৷৷2.64.48৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ one conversant with righteousness, ಸಃ that, ಮುನಿಪುತ್ರಃ son of the sage, ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮಭಿಃ by the merit of his own deeds, ಶಕ್ರೇಣ ಸಹ with Indra, ದಿವ್ಯೇನ in a celestial, ರೂಪೇಣ form, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heaven, ಅಧ್ಯಾರುಹತ್ ascended.

The virtuous son of that ascetic assumed a celestial form through the merit of his good deeds and ascended heaven at once with Indra.
ಆಬಭಾಷೇ ಚ ವೃದ್ಧೌ ತೌ ಸಹ ಶಕ್ರೇಣ ತಾಪಸಃ.

ಆಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯಚ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ತು ಪಿತರೌ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.64.49৷৷


ಸಹ ಶಕ್ರೇಣ with Indra, (ಸಃ) ತಾಪಸಃ that ascetic, ತೌ both, ವೃದ್ಧೌ to the aged ones, ಅಬಾಭಾಷೇ ಚ spoke, ಪಿತರೌ parents, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ for a brief moment, ಆಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ consoling, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

The ascetic in the company of Indra consoling the aged couple for a brief moment said:
ಸ್ಥಾನಮಸ್ಮಿ ಮಹತ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೋ ಭವತೋಃ ಪರಿಚಾರಣಾತ್.

ಭವನ್ತಾವಪಿ ಚ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಮಮ ಮೂಲಮುಪೈಷ್ಯತಃ৷৷2.64.50৷৷


ಭವತೋಃ your, ಪರಿಚಾರಣಾತ್ by (your) service, ಮಹತ್ supreme, ಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ state, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I have attained, ಭವನ್ತೌ ಅಪಿ ಚ you also, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಮಮ my, ಮೂಲಮ್ presence, ಉಪೈಷ್ಯತಃ will obtain.

'I have attained this supreme state by virtue of the service rendered to you. You will also attain my state soon.'
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ದಿವ್ಯೇನ ವಿಮಾನೇನ ವಪುಷ್ಮತಾ.

ಆರುರೋಹ ದಿವಂ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಮುನಿಪುತ್ರೋ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.64.51৷৷


ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ one with his senses conquered, ಮುನಿಪುತ್ರಃ sage's son, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ವಪುಷ್ಮತಾ beautiful, ದಿವ್ಯೇನ celestial, ವಿಮಾನೇನ aerial chariot, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ದಿವಮ್ heaven, ಆರುರೋಹ ascended.

The sage's son with his senses under control said this while ascending heaven on a beautiful, celestial, aerial chariot.
ಸ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ತೂದಕಂ ತೂರ್ಣಂ ತಾಪಸ ಸ್ಸಹ ಭಾರ್ಯಯಾ.

ಮಾಮುವಾಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್৷৷2.64.52৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ brilliant, ಸಃ ತಾಪಸಃ that ascetic, ಭಾರ್ಯಯಾ ಸಹ with his wife, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ immediately, ಉದಕಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ offering funeral libations, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded palms, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing nearby, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಉವಾಚ addressed.

The radiant ascetic along with his wife hurriedly completed the funeral libations and said to me standing with folded palms:
ಅದ್ಯೈವ ಜಹಿಂ ಮಾಂ ರಾಜನ್ಮರಣೇ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ಮೇ ವ್ಯಥಾ.

ಯಚ್ಛರೇಣೈಕಪುತ್ರಂ ಮಾಂ ತ್ವಮಕರ್ಷೀರಪುತ್ರಕಮ್৷৷2.64.53৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ king, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯತ್ since, ಐಕ ಪುತ್ರಮ್ having only one son, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಶರೇಣ with the arrow, ಅಪುತ್ರಕಮ್ childless, ಅಕಾರ್ಷೀಃ rendered, ಅದ್ಯೈವ right now, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಜಹಿ slay, ಮೇ to me, ಮರಣೇ in death, ವ್ಯಥಾ pain, ನಾಸ್ತಿ not.

'Kill me, O king! with the same arrow by which you rendered me childless. Death holds no pain for me.
ತ್ವಯಾ ತು ಯದವಿಜ್ಞಾನಾನ್ನಿಹತೋ ಮೇ ಸುತಶ್ಶುಚಿಃ.

ತೇನ ತ್ವಾಮಭಿಶಪ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸುದುಃಖಮತಿದಾರುಣಮ್৷৷2.64.54৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ in ignorance, ಮೇ my, ಶುಚಿಃ pure-hearted, ಸುತಃ son, ಯತ್ since, ನಿಹತಃ was killed, ತೇನ therefore, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಸುದುಃಖಮ್ deeply sorrowful, ಅತಿದಾರುಣಮ್ extremely dreadful, ಅಭಿಶಪ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I will curse.

'Though you have killed my pure-hearted son unintentionally, I will pronounce a disastrous and dreadful curse on you.
ಪುತ್ರವ್ಯಸನಜಂ ದುಃಖಂ ಯದೇತನ್ಮಮ ಸಾಮ್ಪ್ರತಮ್.

ಏವಂ ತ್ವಂ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ ರಾಜನ್ಕಾಲಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.64.55৷৷


ಸಾಮ್ಪ್ರತಮ್ now, ಯತ್ ಏತತ್ just as this, ಪುತ್ರವ್ಯಸನಜಮ್ caused by my son's death, ದುಃಖಮ್ grief, ಏವಮ್ the same way, ರಾಜನ್ O king!, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ by the sorrow over your son, ಕಾಲಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ will die.

'Just as I am now suffering from grief caused by my son's death, you, O king, shall die from the sorrow on account of (separation from) your son.
ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ತು ಹತೋ ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೇಣ ತ್ವಯಾ ಮುನಿಃ.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತ್ವಾಂ ನಾವಿಶತ್ಯಾಶು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಹತ್ಯಾ ನರಾಧಿಪ!৷৷2.64.56৷৷


ನರಾಧಿಪ O lord of men, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೇಣ by being a kshatriya, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ since, ಮುನಿಃ sage, ಅಜ್ಞಾನಾತ್ ignorantly, ಹತಃ killed, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for that reason, ಆಶು immediately, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಹತ್ಯಾ sin of slaying a brahmana, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನ ಆವಿಶತಿ will not apply.

'Since you, O lord of men, you have killed an ascetic unaware, as kshatriya the sin of slaying a brahmin will not accrue to you immediately.
ತ್ವಾಮಪ್ಯೇತಾದೃಶೋ ಭಾವಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಜೀವಿತಾನ್ತಕರೋ ಘೋರೋ ದಾತಾರಮಿವ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾ৷৷2.64.57৷৷


ಜೀವಿತಾನ್ತಕರಃ causing the end of your life, ಘೋರಃ dreadful, ಏತಾದೃಶಃ such, ಭಾವಃ mortal condition, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾ alms, ದಾತಾರಮ್ ಇವ like a giver, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ soon, ತ್ವಾಮಪಿ you also, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ will reach.

'Just like the merits of alms come to the giver, you are going to face very soon a dreadful situation causing the end of your life.'
ಏವಂ ಶಾಪಂ ಮಯಿ ನ್ಯಸ್ಯ ವಿಲಪ್ಯ ಕರುಣಂ ಬಹು.

ಚಿತಾಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ ದೇಹಂ ತನ್ಮಿಥುನಂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮಭ್ಯಯಾತ್৷৷2.64.58৷৷


ತತ್ that, ಮಿಥುನಮ್ couple, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಮಯಿ in me, ಶಾಪಮ್ curse, ನ್ಯಸ್ಯ giving, ಕರುಣಮ್
piteously, ಬಹುವಿಲಪ್ಯ lamenting long, ದೇಹಮ್ body, ಚಿತಾಮ್ funeral pyre, ಆರೋಪ್ಯ ascending, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ to heaven, ಅಭ್ಯಯಾತ್ went.

Having thus cursed me, the couple piteously lamenting for a long time, laid themselves down on the funeral pyre and went to heaven.
ತದೇತಚ್ಛಿನ್ತಯಾನೇನ ಸ್ಮೃತಂ ಪಾಪಂ ಮಯಾ ಸ್ವಯಮ್.

ತದಾ ಬಾಲ್ಯಾತ್ಕೃತಂ ದೇವಿ! ಶಬ್ದವೇಧ್ಯನುಶಿಕ್ಷಿಣಾ৷৷2.64.59৷৷


ದೇವಿ! O Devi (Kausalya)!, ತದಾ then, ಶಬ್ದವೇಧ್ಯನುಶಿಕ್ಷಿಣಾ trained in discharging the arrow in the direction of sound, ಮಯಾ by me, ಬಾಲ್ಯಾತ್ out of ignorance, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ myself, ಕೃತಮ್ committed, ತತ್ such, ಏತತ್ this, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಚಿನ್ತಯಾನೇನ reflecting, ಸ್ಮೃತಮ್ recollected.

While reflecting about it now, O Devi (Kausalya)! I recollect this sin committed by me unintentionally, with childish pranks while practising the art of hitting a target by its sound.
ತಸ್ಯಾಯಂ ಕರ್ಮಣೋ ದೇವಿ! ವಿಪಾಕಸ್ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ಅಪಥ್ಯೈಸ್ಸಹಮ್ಭುಕ್ತೇ ವ್ಯಾಧಿರನ್ನರಸೇ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.64.60৷৷


ದೇವಿ! O Devi!, ತಸ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮಣಃ that act's, ಅಯಂ ವಿಪಾಕಃ this consequence, ಅನ್ನರಸೇ food and drink, ಅಪಥ್ಯೈಃ ಸಹ with unhealthy food, ಸಮ್ಭುಕ್ತೇ ಸತಿ when partaking, ವ್ಯಾಧಿಃ ಯಥಾ causing illness, ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ has befallen.

Just as a man eating forbidden food and drink falls sick, so have I fallen prey to grief,
because of my sin, O Devi!
ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ಮಾಮಾಗತಂ ಭದ್ರೇ! ತಸ್ಯೋದಾರಸ್ಯ ತದ್ವಚಃ.

ಯದಹಂ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ ಸನ್ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ್ಯದ್ಯ ಜೀವಿತಮ್৷৷2.64.61৷৷


ಭದ್ರೇ! O gentle lady, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ hence, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ due to sorrow over my son, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ಯತ್ ಸನ್ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ since I am giving up, ಉದಾರಸ್ಯ of the noble, ತಸ್ಯ that ascetic's, ತತ್ ವಚಃ
those words, ಮಮ for me, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಆಗತಮ್ have come true.

O gentle lady, the words of that noble ascetic have come true today. Hence I am now going to give up my life.
ಚಕ್ಷುಭ್ಯಾಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ! ಸಾಧು ಮಾಂ ಸ್ಫೃಶ.

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಸ ರುದಂಸ್ತ್ರಸ್ತೋ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಮಾಹ ಚ ಭೂಮಿಪಃ৷৷2.64.62৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯೇ! O Kausalya, ಚಕ್ಷುರ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with eyes, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I am unable to see, ಮಾಂ me, ಸಾಧು properly, ಸ್ಫೃಶ touch, ಭೂಮಿಪಃ lord of the earth, ಇತಿ ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said so, ತ್ರಸ್ತೋ frightened, ರುದನ್ weeping, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ to his wife, ಆಹ ಚ said also.

O Kausalya, I cannot see you with my eyes. Touch me gently, said the frightened Dasaratha, Lord of the earth, to his wife weeping.
ಏತನ್ಮೇ ಸದೃಶಂ ದೇವಿ! ಯನ್ಮಯಾ ರಾಘವೇ ಕೃತಮ್.

ಸದೃಶಂ ತತ್ತು ತಸ್ಯೈವ ಯದನೇನ ಕೃತಂ ಮಯಿ৷৷2.64.63৷৷


ದೇವಿ! O Devi, ಮಯಾ by me, ಯತ್ whatever, ರಾಘವೇ to Rama, ಕೃತಮ್ done, ಏತತ್ all that, ಮೇ to me, ಸದೃಶಮ್ befitting, ಅನೇನ by him (this Rama), ಮಯಿ relating to me, ಯತ್ whatever, ಕೃತಮ್ done, ತತ್ತು that one, ತಸ್ಯೈವ his, ಸದೃಶಮ್ is worthy of.

Whatever I have done to the scion of the Raghu family (Rama) is befitting me, O Devi. And whatever he has done in respect of me is also worthy of him.
ದುರ್ವೃತ್ತಮಪಿ ಕಃ ಪುತ್ರಂ ತ್ಯಜೇದ್ಭುವಿ ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ.

ಕಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜ್ಯಮಾನೋ ವಾ ನಾಸೂಯೇತ್ಪಿತರಂ ಸುತಃ৷৷2.64.64৷৷


ಭುವಿ in this world, ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ clear-righted, ಕಃ who, ದುರ್ವೃತ್ತಮಪಿ even if ill-behaved, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ತ್ಯಜೇತ್ will he abandon?, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜ್ಯಮಾನೋ ಅಪಿ even while he is being banished, ಕಃ who, ಸುತಃ son, ಪಿತರಮ್ at his father, ನಾ ಸೂಯೇತ್ will not become angry?

Which clear-sighted man in this world, will abandon his son even if he is of evil conduct? Which son will not get angry with his father when he is banished?
ಯದಿ ಮಾಂ ಸಂಸ್ಪೃಶೇದ್ರಾಮಸ್ಸಕೃದದ್ಯ ಲಭೇತ ವಾ.

ಯಮಕ್ಷಯಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ನ ಹಿ ಮಾನವಾಃ৷৷2.64.65৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಸಕೃತ್ once, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಸಮ್ಸ್ಪೃಶೇತ್ will touch?, ಲಭೇತ ವಾ will he come to my side, ಯಮಕ್ಷಯಮ್ world of Yama, ಅನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಃ attained, ಮಾನವಾಃ men, ನ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಹಿ cannot see any more indeed

Before I die, will Rama touch me once or will he come to me? After reaching the abode of Yama men cannot see their relations.
ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ ತ್ವಾಂ ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸ್ಮೃತಿರ್ಮಮ ವಿಲುಪ್ಯತೇ.

ದೂತಾ ವೈವಸ್ವತಸ್ಯೈತೇ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ! ತ್ವರಯನ್ತಿ ಮಾಮ್৷৷2.64.66৷৷


ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ O Kausalya, ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ with my eyes, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ cannot see, ಮಮ my, ಸ್ಮೃತಿಃ memory, ವಿಲುಪ್ಯತೇ is failing, ವೈವಸ್ವತಸ್ಯ Yama's, ಏತೇ ದೂತಾಃ these messengers, ಮಾಮ್ me, ತ್ವರಯನ್ತಿ are hastening up.

O Kausalya!, I am unable to see you. My memory is failing and the messengers of Yama are hastening me.
ಅತಸ್ತು ಕಿಂ ದುಃಖತರಂ ಯದಹಂ ಜೀವಿತಕ್ಷಯೇ.

ನ ಹಿ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.64.67৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಜೀವಿತಕ್ಷಯೇ at the last moment of my life, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ to the knower of righteousness, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ to one possessing the strength of truth, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹಿ ಇತಿ ಯತ್ the fact that I am unable to see, ಅತಃ more than this, ದುಃಖತರಮ್ more sorrowful, ಕಿಂ ನು what is there?

Can there be a greater sorrow than that at the last moment of my life I am unable to
see my righteous and truthful son, Rama?
ತಸ್ಯಾದರ್ಶನಜಶ್ಶೋಕಸ್ಸುತಸ್ಯಾಪ್ರತಿಕರ್ಮಣಃ.

ಉಚ್ಛೋಷಯತಿ ಮೇ ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ವಾರಿಸ್ತೋಕಮಿವಾತಪಃ৷৷2.64.68৷৷


ಅಪ್ರತಿಕರ್ಮಣಃ of unparalleled deeds, ತಸ್ಯ ಸುತಸ್ಯ that son's, ಅದರ್ಶನಜಃ born out of non-appearance, ಶೋಕಃ grief, ಸ್ತೋಕಮ್ small quantity, ವಾರಿ water, ಆತಪಃ ಇವ like heat, ಮೇ my, ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ life, ಉಚ್ಛೋಷಯತಿ is drying up.

My grief in the absence of Rama of peerless deeds is drying up my life as heat dries up small pools of water.
ನ ತೇ ಮನುಷ್ಯಾ ದೇವಾಸ್ತೇ ಯೇ ಚಾರುಶುಭಕುಣ್ಡಲಮ್.

ಮುಖಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ವರ್ಷೇ ಪಞ್ಚದಶೇ ಪುನಃ৷৷2.64.69৷৷


ಪಞ್ಚದಶೇ ವರ್ಷೇ in the fifteenth year, ಯೇ whoever, ಚಾರು elegant, ಶುಭಕುಣ್ಡಲಮ್ with auspicious ear- rings, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಮುಖಮ್ countenance, ಪುನಃ again, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will behold, ತೇ those, ದೇವಾಃ gods, ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಃ men, ನ not.

Those who will behold Rama's countenance adorned with auspicious ear-rings on his return in the fifteenth year are gods not men.
ಪದ್ಮಪತ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣಂ ಸುಭ್ರು! ಸುದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಂ ಚಾರುನಾಸಿಕಮ್.

ಧನ್ಯಾ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ತಾರಾಧಿಪನಿಭಂ ಮುಖಮ್৷৷2.64.70৷৷


ಪದ್ಮಪತ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣಮ್ eyes like lotus petals, ಸುಭ್ರು graceful eyebrows, ಸುದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ even teeth, ಚಾರುನಾಸಿಕಮ್ of shapely nose, ತಾರಾಧಿಪನಿಭಮ್ resembling the lord of the stars (the Moon), ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಮುಖಮ್ countenance, ಧನ್ಯಾಃ blessed, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will behold.

Blessed are they who will behold Rama's countenance resembling the Moon, lord of the stars with eyes like lotus petals graceful eyebrows, even teeth and a nose.
ಸದೃಶಂ ಶಾರದಸ್ಯೇನ್ದೋಃ ಪುಲ್ಲಸ್ಯ ಕಮಲಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಸುಗನ್ಧಿ ಮಮ ನಾಥಸ್ಯ ಧನ್ಯಾ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ತನ್ಮುಖಮ್৷৷2.64.71৷৷


ಶಾರದಸ್ಯ autumnal, ಇನ್ದೋಃ Moon, ಸದೃಶಮ್ similar, ಪುಲ್ಲಸ್ಯ full-blown, ಕಮಲಸ್ಯ ಚ similar to lotus, ಸುಗನ್ಧಿ fragrant, ಮಮ ನಾಥಸ್ಯ my son's, ತತ್ that, ಮುಖಮ್ countenance, ಧನ್ಯಾಃ blessed, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will behold.

Fortunate indeed are the men who will behold my son's fragrant countenance camparable to the autmnal Moon and the full-blown lotus.
ನಿವೃತ್ತವನವಾಸಂ ತಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಪುನರಾಗತಮ್.

ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಸುಖಿನೋ ರಾಮಂ ಶುಕ್ರಂ ಮಾರ್ಗಗತಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.64.72৷৷


ನಿವೃತ್ತವನವಾಸಮ್ after completing the period of exile, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ಪುನಃ again, ಆಗತಮ್ returning, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಮಾರ್ಗಗತಮ್ moving on the highway, ಶುಕ್ರಂ ಯಥಾ like the planet Venus, ಸುಖಿನಃ happy persons, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will behold.

Lucky men will behold Rama return to Ayodhya after the completion of his exile, like the planet Venus moving forward on its orbit.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ! ಚಿತ್ತಮೋಹೇನ ಹೃದಯಂ ಸೀದತೀವ ಮೇ.

ವೇದಯೇ ನ ಚ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ ಶಬ್ದಸ್ಪರ್ಶರಸಾನಹಮ್৷৷2.64.73৷৷


ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ! O Kausalya, ಚಿತ್ತಮೋಹೇನ on account of delusion, ಮೇ ಹೃದಯಮ್ my heart, ಸೀದತೀವ as if sinking, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ united, ಶಬ್ದಸ್ಪರ್ಶರಸಾನ್ the sense of sound, touch and taste, ನ ಚ ವೇದಯೇ I am not able to know.

O Kausalya!, my heart, it appears is sinking and on account of delusion I am not able to feel the sense objects like sound touch and taste together.
ಚಿತ್ತನಾಶಾದ್ವಿಪದ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಸರ್ವಾಣ್ಯೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ ಮೇ.

ಕ್ಷೀಣಸ್ನೇಹಸ್ಯ ದೀಪಸ್ಯ ಸಂಸಕ್ತಾ ರಶ್ಮಯೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.64.74৷৷


ಚಿತ್ತನಾಶಾತ್ on account of the loss of the mental faculty, ಮೇ my, ಸರ್ವಾಣ್ಯೇವ all, ಇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ sense organs, ಕ್ಷೀಣಸ್ನೇಹಸ್ಯ with oil exhausted, ದೀಪಸ್ಯ like the lamp, ಸಂಸಕ್ತಾಃ together, ರಶ್ಮಯಃ ಯಥಾ like rays, ವಿಪದ್ಯನ್ತೇ are giving way.

With the loss of my mental faculty, all the sense organs are giving way, like the rays of the lamp giving way together when the oil is exhausted.
ಅಯಮಾತ್ಮಭವಶ್ಶೋಕೋ ಮಾಮನಾಥಮಚೇತನಮ್.

ಸಂಸಾದಯತಿ ವೇಗೇನ ಯಥಾ ಕೂಲಂ ನದೀರಯಃ৷৷2.64.75৷৷


ಆತ್ಮಭವಃ self-created on account of my son, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಶೋಕಃ sorrow, ಅನಾಥಮ್ helpless, ಅಚೇತನಮ್ insensible, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನದೀರಯಃ current of the river, ಕೂಲಂ ಯಥಾ like the bank, ವೇಗೇನ rapidly, ಸಂಸಾದಯತಿ eroding.

This self-created grief is rapidly destroying me like the bank of a river eroded by its swift current, leaving me helpless and insensible.
ಹಾ ರಾಘವ! ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ! ಹಾ ಮಮಾಯಾಸನಾಶನ.

ಹಾ ಪಿತೃಪ್ರಿಯ! ಮೇ ನಾಥ! ಹಾದ್ಯ ಕ್ವಾಸಿ ಗತಸ್ಸುತ৷৷2.64.76৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ! O mighty-armed one, ಹಾ ರಾಘವ! Ah Rama, ಮಮ my, ಆಯಾಸನಾಶನ destroyer of my agony, ಹಾ Ah , ಹಾ ಪಿತೃಪ್ರಿಯ Ah delight of your father, ಮೇ ನಾಥ my protector, ಹಾ Ah ಸುತ son, ಕ್ವ
where, ಗತಃ ಅಸಿ have you gone?.

Ah, mighty-armed Rama, destroyer of my agonies, Ah, the delight of your father, Ah, my protector, Ah, my son, where have you gone?.
ಹಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೇ! ನಶಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹಾ ಸುಮಿತ್ರೇ! ತಪಸ್ವಿನಿ!.

ಹಾ ನೃಶಂಸೇ! ಮಮಾಮಿತ್ರೇ! ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಕುಲಪಾಂಸನಿ!৷৷2.64.77৷৷


ಹಾ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯೇ! Ah Kausalya, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಿ! pitiable one, ಹಾ ಸುಮಿತ್ರೇ Ah Sumitra, ಹಾ Ah, ನೃಶಂಸೇ cruel one, ಮಮ ಅಮಿತ್ರೇ my enemy, ಕುಲಪಾಂಸನಿ! defiler of my race, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ನಶಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ am destroyed.

Ah, Kausalya, Ah, pitiable Sumitra, Ah, cruel Kaikeyi, my enemy and defiler of my race, I am going to die.
ಇತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಮಾತುಶ್ಚ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಯಾಶ್ಚ ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ.

ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥ ಶ್ಶೋಚಞ್ಜೀವಿತಾನ್ತಮುಪಾಗಮತ್৷৷2.64.78৷৷

King Dasaratha, thus crying in distress in the presence of Rama's mother and Sumitra reached the end of his life.
ಯದಾ ತು ದೀನಂ ಕಥಯನ್ನರಾಧಿಪಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಸ್ಯ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಸ್ಯ ವಿವಾಸನಾತುರಃ.

ಗತೇರ್ಧರಾತ್ರೇ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಪೀಡಿತಸ್ತದಾ ಜಹೌ ಪ್ರಾಣಮುದಾರದರ್ಶನಃ৷৷2.64.79৷৷


ಉದಾರದರ್ಶನಃ a man of noble vision, ನರಾಧಿಪಃ king, ದೀನಮ್ pitiably, ಕಥಯನ್ while speaking, ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ son's, ವಿವಾಸನಾತುರಃ distraught on account of his exile, ಅರ್ಧರಾತ್ರೇ at midnight, ಗತೇ having passed away, ಯದಾ when, ಭೃಶದುಃಖಪೀಡಿತಃ tormented with intense sorrow, ತದಾ then, ಪ್ರಾಣಮ್ life, ಜಹೌ gave up.

King Dasaratha, a man of noble vision and lord of men, anguished by the exile of his son, kept pitiably muttering till past midnight until tormented by an intense agony he breathed his last.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಚತುಷ್ಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
