[Dasaratha's death --- heart-broken Kausalya and Sumitra --- palace echoes with the lamentations of Dasaratha's wives.]

ಅಥ ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಾಂ ವ್ಯತೀತಾಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಾತರೇವಾಪರೇಹನಿ.

ವನ್ದಿನಃ ಪರ್ಯುಪಾತಿಷ್ಠಂಸ್ತತ್ಪಾರ್ಥಿವ ನಿವೇಶನಮ್৷৷2.65.1৷৷

ಸೂತಾಃ ಪರಮಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಾ ಮಙ್ಗಲಾಶ್ಚೋತ್ತಮಶ್ರುತಾಃ.

ಗಾಯಕಾ: ಸ್ತುತಿಶೀಲಾಶ್ಚ ನಿಗದನ್ತಃ ಪೃಥಕ್ ಪೃಥಕ್৷৷2.65.2৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಾಮ್ that night, ವ್ಯತೀತಾಯಾಮ್ had passed, ಅಪರೇ on the following, ಅಹನಿ day, ಪ್ರಾತಃ ಏವ in the morning, ಪರಮಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಾಃ highly accomplished men, ಉತ್ತಮಶ್ರುತಾಃ proficient in learning, ಮಙ್ಗಲಾಶ್ಚ auspicious men, ಸೂತಾಃ genealogists, ಸ್ತುತಿಶೀಲಾಃ those versed in praising, ಗಾಯಕಾಃ singers, ವನ್ದಿನಃ panegyrists, ಪೃಥಕ್ ಪೃಥಕ್ separately one by one, ನಿಗದನ್ತಃ reciting audibly, ತತ್ that, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವನಿವೇಶನಮ್ palace of the king, ಪರ್ಯುಪಾತಿಷ್ಠನ್ reached.

Then on the following day (unaware of Dasaratha's death) panegyrists uttering benedictions, highly accomplished bards and genealogists proficient in reciting auspicious words, singers versed in musical science reached the palace one after another eulogising the king's glory.

ಉದಾತ್ತಾಭಿಹಿತಾಶಿಷಾಮ್ uttering benedictions at high pitch, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ the king, ಸ್ತುವತಾಮ್ those who were praising, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಸ್ತುತಿಶಬ್ದಃ song of praise, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾಭೋಗವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಃ spread over the entire palace, ಅವರ್ತತ ಹಿ pervaded.

The songs of those who were eulogising the king and uttering benedictions at high pitch pervaded the entire palace.
ತತಸ್ತು ಸ್ತುವತಾಂ ತೇಷಾಂ ಸೂತಾನಾಂ ಪಾಣಿವಾದಕಾಃ.

ಅಪದಾನಾನ್ಯುದಾಹೃತ್ಯ ಪಾಣಿವಾದಾ ನವಾದಯನ್৷৷2.65.4৷৷


ತತಃ then, ತೇಷಾಂ ಸೂತಾನಾಮ್ ಸ್ತುವತಾಮ್ while the bards were singing the praise of the king, ಪಾಣಿವಾದಕಾಃ those who praise clapping their palms, ಅವದಾನಾನಿ his wonderful deeds, ಉದಾಹೃತ್ಯ citing, ಪಾಣಿವಾದಾನ್ claps, ಅವಾದಯನ್ clapped.

While the bards sang the praise of the king, those who praise clapping their palms clapped, citing the wonderful deeds of Dasaratha.
ತೇನ ಶಬ್ದೇನ ವಿಹಗಾಃ ಪ್ರತಿಬುದ್ಧಾ ವಿಸಸ್ವನುಃ.

ಶಾಖಾಸ್ಥಾಃ ಪಞ್ಜರಸ್ಥಾಶ್ಚ ಯೇ ರಾಜಕುಲಗೋಚರಾಃ৷৷2.65.5৷৷


ತೇನ by that, ಶಬ್ದೇನ sound, ಶಾಖಾಸ್ಥಾಃ some perched on the branches, ಪಞ್ಜರಸ್ಥಾಃ ಚ and some in cages, ಯೇ ರಾಜಕುಲಗೋಚರಾಃ found all over the palace, ವಿಹಾಗಾಃ birds, ಪ್ರತಿಬುದ್ಧಾ: awoke, ವಿಸಸ್ವನುಃ began to twitter.

The birds perched on the branches and some in cages awoke and began to twitter all over the palace.
ವ್ಯಾಹೃತಾಃ ಪುಣ್ಯಶಬ್ದಾಶ್ಚ ವೀಣಾನಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ ನಿಸ್ಸ್ವನಾಃ.

ಆಶೀರ್ಗೇಯಂ ಚ ಗಾಥಾನಾಂ ಪೂರಯಾಮಾಸ ವೇಶ್ಮ ತತ್৷৷2.65.6৷৷


ವ್ಯಾಹೃತಾಃ uttered, ಪುಣ್ಯಶಬ್ದಾಶ್ಚ sacred sounds, ವೀಣಾನಾಮ್ of veena, ನಿಸ್ಸ್ವನಾಃ ಚ notes also, ಗಾಥಾನಾಮ್ of hymns composed to metre, ಆಶೀರ್ಗೇಯಂ ಚ benedictory verses, ತತ್ that, ವೇಶ್ಮ house, ಪೂರಮಾಯಾಸ filled.

The sacred songs of bards and panegyrists, notes of veena, chantings of metrical hymns and benedictory verses filled the palace.
ತತ ಶ್ಶುಚಿಸಮಾಚಾರಾಃ ಪರ್ಯುಪಸ್ಥಾನಕೋವಿದಾಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರೀವರ್ಷ ಧರಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಾ ಉಪತಸ್ಥುರ್ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್৷৷2.65.7৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಶುಚಿಸಮಾಚಾರಾಃ observing purificatory practices, ಸ್ತ್ರೀವರ್ಷ ಧರಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಾಃ many women and eunuchs, ಪರ್ಯುಪಸ್ಥಾನಕೋವಿದಾ: skilled to serve, ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್ as usual, ಉಪತಸ್ಥುಃ assembled.

Thereafter, as usual, men observing purificatory practices and skilled in royal service assembled along with women and eunuchs.
ಹರಿಚನ್ದನಸಮ್ಪೃಕ್ತಮುದಕಂ ಕಾಞ್ಚನೈರ್ಘಟೈಃ.

ಆನಿನ್ಯುಸ್ಸ್ನಾನಶಿಕ್ಷಾಜ್ಞಾ ಯಥಾಕಾಲಂ ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ৷৷2.65.8৷৷


ಸ್ನಾನಶಿಕ್ಷಾಜ್ಞಾಃ those acquainted with bathing ceremonies, ಹರಿಚನ್ದನ ಸಮ್ಪೃಕ್ತಮ್ mixed with yellow sandal paste, ಉದಕಮ್ water, ಕಾಞ್ಚನೈಃ in golden, ಘಟೈಃ vessels, ಯಥಾಕಾಲಮ್ at appropriate times, ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ according to tradition, ಆನಿನ್ಯುಃ brought.

The bath-attendants brought water mixed with yellow sandal paste in golden vessels at appropriate times in accordance with tradition.
ಮಙ್ಗಲಾಲಮ್ಭನೀಯಾನಿ ಪ್ರಾಶನೀಯಾನ್ಯುಪಸ್ಕರಾನ್.

ಉಪನಿನ್ಯುಸ್ತಥಾಪ್ಯನ್ಯಾಃ ಕುಮಾರೀಬಹುಲಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.65.9৷৷


ತಥಾ also, ಅನ್ಯಾಃ some other, ಕುಮಾರೀಬಹುಲಾಃ with young maidens in large numbers, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ
women, ಮಙ್ಗಲಾಲಮ್ಭನೀಯಾನಿ auspicious unguents, ಪ್ರಾಶನೀಯಾಃ articles gratifying to the senses, ಉಪಸ್ಕರಾನ್ articles necessary for completion of bathing ritual, ಉಪನಿನ್ಯುಃ brought.

Also, a group of women mostly young maidens brought auspicious unguents, articles gratifying the senses and those necessary accessories for completion of bathing process.
ಸರ್ವಲಕ್ಷಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ವಿಧಿವದರ್ಚಿತಮ್.

ಸರ್ವಂ ಸುಗುಣಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀವತ್ತದ್ಬಭೂವಾಭಿಹಾರಿಕಮ್৷৷2.65.10৷৷


ತತ್ then, ಆಭಿಹಾರಿಕಮ್ articles for the king, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಸರ್ವಲಕ್ಷಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ were of good quality, ವಿಧಿವತ್ as per tradition, ಅರ್ಚಿತಮ್ ಬಭೂವ (ಆಭೂತ್) was adorable, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything, ಸುಗುಣಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀವತ್ excellent and auspicious

All the articles brought for the king (for his bath) were presentable and as per tradition. In quality they were excellent and auspicious.
ತತ ಸ್ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯಂ ಯಾವತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಪರಿಸಮುತ್ಸುಕಮ್.

ತಸ್ಥಾವನುಪಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಕಿಂಸ್ವಿದಿತ್ಯುಪಶಙ್ಕಿತಮ್৷৷2.65.11৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all (attendants with necessary preparations), ಪರಿಸಮುತ್ಸುಕಮ್ highly enthusiastic, ಅನುಪಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ without reaching the king, ಕಿಂಸ್ವಿತ್ ಇತಿ as to what had happened, ಉಪಶಙ್ಕಿತಮ್ doubting, ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯಂ ಯಾವತ್ until the sunrise, ತಸ್ಥೌ waited.

All the highly enthusiastic attendants waited for the king till sunrise. Unable to see the king they doubted about what had happened!
ಅಥ ಯಾಃ ಕೋಸಲೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಶಯನಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯನನ್ತರಾಃ.

ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಸ್ತು ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಬೋಧಯನ್৷৷2.65.12৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಯಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ those women, ಕೋಶಲೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ of the king of Kosala (Dasaratha's), ಶಯನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ attending on the bed, ಅನನ್ತರಾಃ with unrestricted movement, ತಾಃ ತು those
women, ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ on coming near, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ that lord, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಬೋಧಯನ್ and began waking him up.

The women who usually attend to the bed (maids who do the bed in the morning) of Dasaratha (king of Kosala) without any restrictions, approached the king and began waking him up.
ತಥಾಪ್ಯುಚಿತವೃತ್ತಾ ಸ್ತಾ ವಿನಯೇನ ನಯೇನ ಚ.

ನಹ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಶಯನಂ ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಪ್ಯುಪಲೇಭಿರೇ৷৷2.65.13৷৷


ತಥಾಪಿ even then, ವಿನಯೇನ with restraint, ನಯೇನ obediently, ಉಚಿತ ವೃತ್ತಾಃ with agreeable conduct, ತಾಃ those women, ಅಸ್ಯ Dasratha's, ಶಯನಮ್ bed, ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having touched, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ ಅಪಿ even a little, ನ ಉಪಲೇಭಿರೇ did not perceive.

Conducting themselves agreeably with restraint and obedience, the women touched the bed of Dasaratha but did not perceive any sign of life.
ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಸ್ಸ್ವಪ್ನಶೀಲಜ್ಞಾಶ್ಚೇಷ್ಟಾಸಞ್ಚಲನಾದಿಷು

ತಾ ವೇಪಥುಪರೀತಾಶ್ಚ ರಾಜ್ಞಃ ಪ್ರಾಣೇಷು ಶಙ್ಕಿತಾಃ.

ಪ್ರತಿಸ್ರೋತಸ್ತೃಣಾಗ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಸದೃಶಂ ಸಞ್ಚಕಾಶಿರೇ৷৷2.65.14৷৷


ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯಃ those women, ಚೇಷ್ಟಾಸಞ್ಚಲನಾದಿಷು in actions, movements, etc, ಸ್ವಪ್ನಶೀಲಜ್ಞಾಃ who know the nature of sleeping men, ತಾಃ those women, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king's, ಪ್ರಾಣೇಷು regarding king's life, ಶಙ್ಕಿತಾಃ apprehensive of, ವೇಪಥುಪರೀತಾಃ ಚ trembling severely, ಪ್ರತಿಸ್ರೋತಸ್ತ್ರೃಣಾಗ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ the tips of reeds standing against the current, ಸದೃಶಮ್ like, ಸಞ್ಚಕಾಶಿರೇ remained.

Those women knowledgeable in ascertaining the nature of sleep based on the actions, movements, etc. were apprehensive whether the king was alive or not. Trembling severely they seemed like the tips of reeds that stand against the current.
ಅಥ ಸನ್ದೇಹಮಾನಾನಾಂ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್.

ಯತ್ತದಾಶಙ್ಕಿತಂ ಪಾಪಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಜಜ್ಞೇ ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ৷৷2.65.15৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್ king, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚ having seen, ಸನ್ದೇಹಮಾನಾನಾಮ್ suspicious, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ women, ಯತ್ that, ತತ್ this, ಪಾಪಮ್ evil, ಆಶಙ್ಕಿತಮ್ apprehensive, ತಸ್ಯ its, ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಯ: certain, ಜಜ್ಞೇ became.

Having seen the king more closely, those women who were apprehensive till then, became certain of the inevitable.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚ ಸುಮತ್ರಚ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಪರಾಜಿತೇ.

ಪ್ರಸುಪ್ತೇ ನ ಪ್ರಬುಧ್ಯೇತೇ ಯಥಾ ಕಾಲಸಮನ್ವಿತೇ৷৷2.65.16৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಪರಾಜಿತೇ overpowered by grief on account of separation from the son, ಪ್ರಸುಪ್ತೇ fast asleep, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಚ Kausalya, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ and Sumitra, ಕಾಲಸಮನ್ವಿತೇ ಯಥಾ as if possessed by death, ನ ಪ್ರಬುಧ್ಯೇತೇ did not wake up.

Overpowered by grief on account of separation from their sons, Sumitra and Kausalya were fast asleep and did not wake up as if they were possessed by death.
ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಭಾ ಚ ವಿವರ್ಣಾ ಚ ಸನ್ನಾ ಶೋಕೇನ ಸನ್ನತಾ.

ನ ವ್ಯರಾಜತ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ತಾರೇವ ತಿಮಿರಾವೃತಾ৷৷2.65.17৷৷


ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಭಾ ಚ dull, ವಿವರ್ಣಾ pallid, ಶೋಕೇನ due to sorrow, ಸನ್ನಾ sunk down, ಸನ್ನತಾ with limbs shrunk, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ತಿಮಿರಾವೃತಾ enveloped by darkness, ತಾರೇವ like stars, ನ ವ್ಯರಾಜತ did not shine.

Kausalya, with her face dull and pallid, sank down, her limbs contracted. She looked lustreless like stars enveloped in darkness.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾನನ್ತರಂ ರಾಜ್ಞಸ್ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ತದನ್ತನರಮ್.

ನ ಸ್ಮ ವಿಭ್ರಾಜತೇ ದೇವೀ ಶೋಕಾಶ್ರುಲುಲಿತಾನನಾ৷৷2.65.18৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಃ of the king , ಅನನ್ತರಮ್ by the side, ದೇವೀ queen, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ತದನ್ತರಮ್ next to her
immediately, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ Sumitra, ಶೋಕಾಶ್ರುಲುಲಿತಾನನಾ with her face drooping (on account of shedding tears in sorrow), ನ ಸ್ಮ ವಿಭ್ರಾಜತೇ devoid of lustre

There lay Sumitra next to Kausalya by the side of the king. Queen Kausalya's face was dull, drooping down on account of shedding tears of sorrow.
ತೇ ಚ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಥಾ ಸುಪ್ತೇ ಶುಭೇ ದೇವ್ಯೌ ಚ ತಂ ನೃಪಮ್.

ಸುಪ್ತಮೇವೋದ್ಗತಪ್ರಾಣಮನ್ತಃಪುರಮದೃಶ್ಯತ৷৷2.65.19৷৷


ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ women in the inner apartment, ತಥಾ in that way, ಸುಪ್ತೇ asleep, ಶುಭೇ auspicious, ತೇ ದೇವ್ಯೌ the two queens, ತಮ್ that, ನೃಪಮ್ king, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸುಪ್ತಮೇವ as if asleep, ಉದ್ಗತ ಪ್ರಾಣಮ್ with life-breath moving upward and leaving him dead, ಅಮನ್ಯತ considered.

Having seen the two auspicious queens asleep, the women in the inner apartment thought the king died in his sleep.
ತತಃ ಪ್ರಚುಕ್ರುಶುರ್ದೀನಾ ಸ್ಸಸ್ವರಂ ತಾ ವರಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ.

ಕರೇಣವ ಇವಾರಣ್ಯೇ ಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಚ್ಯುತಯೂಥಪಾಃ৷৷2.65.20৷৷


ತತಃ then, ತಾಃ ವರಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ those women, ಅರಣ್ಯೇ in the forest, ಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಚ್ಯುತಯೂಥಪಾಃ the leader of the herd dislodged, ಕರೇಣವಃ ಇವ like the female elephants, ದೀನಾಃ in distress, ಸಸ್ವರಮ್ loudly, ಪ್ರಚುಕ್ರುಶುಃ wailed bitterly.

Then those women bewailed bitterly and loudly in distress like female elephants in the forest when their leader has fallen out of the herd.
ತಾಸಾಮಾಕ್ರನ್ದಶಬ್ದೇನ ಸಹಸೋದ್ಧತಚೇತನೇ.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ ನಿದ್ರೇ ಬಭೂವತುಃ৷৷2.65.21৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಚ Kausalya, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ Sumitra too, ತಾಸಾಮ್ their, ಆಕ್ರನ್ದಶಬ್ದೇನ by the sound of their cries, ಸಹಸಾ suddenly, ಉದ್ಧತಚೇತನೇ recovering senses, ತ್ಯಕ್ತನಿದ್ರೇ ಬಭೂವತುಃ deserted their sleep.

Hearing the lamentations of the women suddenly Kausalya and Sumitra woke up from sleep, their senses recovered.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್.

ಹಾ ನಾಥೇತಿ ಪರಿಕ್ರುಶ್ಯ ಪೇತತುರ್ಧರಣೀತಲೇ৷৷2.65.22৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಚ Kausalya, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ and Sumitra, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್ the king, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾಚ having seen,ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚ having touched, ಹಾ ನಾಥ ಇತಿ Ah, lord, saying so, ಪರಿಕ್ರುಶ್ಯ crying loudly, ಧರಣೀತಲೇ on the floor, ಪೇತತುಃ fell down.

ಸಾ that, ಕೋಶಲೇನ್ದ್ರದುಹಿತಾ daughter of the lord of Kosala, Kausalya, ಮಹೀತಲೇ on the ground, ವೇಷ್ಟಮಾನಾ rolling, ರಜೋಧ್ವಸ್ತಾ coated with dust, ಗಗನಾತ್ from the sky, ಚ್ಯುತಾ fallen down, ತಾರೇವ like a star, ನ ಬಭ್ರಾಜ did not shine.

Kausalya, daughter of the lord of Kosala, lay on the ground writhing in pain, coated with dust, and devoid of brightness like a star without radiance fallen from the sky.
ನೃಪೇ ಶಾನ್ತಗುಣೇ ಜಾತೇ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಪತಿತಾಂ ಭುವಿ.

ಅಪಶ್ಯಂಸ್ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ ಸರ್ವಾ ಹತಾಂ ನಾಗವಧೂಮಿವ৷৷2.65.24৷৷


ನೃಪೇ when the king, ಶಾನ್ತಗುಣೇ ಜಾತೇ with his body lying still, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯಃ those women, ಭುವಿ on the earth, ಪತಿತಾಮ್ fallen, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ at Kausalya, ಹತಾಮ್ slain, ನಾಗವಧೂಮಿವ like a female elephant, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ beheld.

Dasaratha with his body lying still, all the women looked at Kausalya fallen down on the floor like a slain female elephant.
ತತಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಪ್ರಮುಖಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ.

ರುದನ್ತ್ಯ ಶ್ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾ ನಿಪೇತುರ್ಗತಚೇತನಾಃ৷৷2.65.25৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಪ್ರಮುಖಾಃ led by Kaikeyi, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king's, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ other wives, ರುದನ್ತ್ಯಃ weeping, ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಃ burning with grief, ಗತಚೇತನಾಃ having lost senses, ನಿಪೇತುಃ fell down.

Then all the wives of the king led by Kaikeyi, burning with grief and weeping, lost their senses and fell down.
ತಾಭಿಸ್ಸ ಬಲವಾನ್ನಾದಃ ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀಭಿರನುದ್ರುತಃ.

ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀಭಿಃ by the wailing ones, ತಾಭಿಃ by those women, ಅನುದ್ರುತಃ followed, ಬಲವಾನ್ strong, loud, ಸಃ ನಾದಃ that sound, ಯೇನ by which, (ಭೂಯಃ) ಸ್ಫೀತೀಕೃತಮ್ made louder, ತತ್ that, ಗೃಹಮ್ house (palaces), ಸಮನಾದಯತ್ reverberated.

The wailings of the women grew louder and louder until the whole palace reverberated with their lamentations.
ತತ್ ಪರಿತ್ರಸ್ತನ್ತ್ರಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತ ಪರ್ಯುತ್ಸುಕಜನಾಕುಲಮ್.

ದಿಷ್ಟಾನ್ತಮ್ demise, ಈಯುಷಃ of him who reached, ನರದೇವಸ್ಯ king's, ತತ್ ಸದ್ಮ that palace, ಪರಿತ್ರಸ್ತನ್ತ್ರಸಮ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತ ಪರ್ಯುತ್ಸುಕಜನಾಕುಲಮ್ thronged with anxious people who were exceedingly bewildered and frightened, ಸರ್ವತಃ all over, ತುಮುಲಾಕ್ರನ್ದಮ್ tumultuous with cries of agony, ಪರಿತಾಪಾರ್ತಬಾನ್ಧವಮ್ with relatives anguished with distress, ಸದ್ಯಃ at an instant, ನಿಪತಿತಾನನ್ದಮ್ joy vanished, ದೀನವಿಕ್ಲಬದರ್ಶನಮ್ looked miserable with grief, ಬಭೂವ became.

On the demise of Dasaratha, joy instantly vanished. The palace was thronged with anxious people who were exceedingly bewildered and frightened. The royal family was anguished with distress. The palace was filled all over with the tumult of cries of agony. And it looked miserable with grief.
ಅತೀತಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ತು ಪಾರ್ಥಿವರ್ಷಭಂ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಂ ಸಮ್ಪರಿವಾರ್ಯ ಪತ್ನಯಃ.

ಭೃಶಂ ರುದನ್ತ್ಯಃ ಕರುಣಂ ಸುದುಃಖಿತಾಃ ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ ಬಾಹೂ ವ್ಯಲಪನ್ನನಾಥವತ್৷৷2.65.29৷৷


ಪತ್ನಯಃ wives of the king, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಮ್ the illustrious, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವರ್ಷಭಮ್ best of kings, ಅತೀತಮ್ him who has passed away, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ realising, ಸಮ್ಪರಿವಾರ್ಯ surrounding him, ಸುದುಃಖಿತಾಃ with intense sorrow, ಕರುಣಮ್ piteously, ಭೃಶಮ್ bitterly, ರುದನ್ತ್ಯಃ weeping, ಬಾಹೂ both their arms, ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ holding, ಅನಾಥವತ್ like orphans, ವ್ಯಲಪನ್ bewailed.

Realising that the great and illustrious king, Dasaratha, had passed away, his wives gathered around him, weeping piteously and bitterly and holding one another's hands bewailed like orphans.
