[Preservation of the king's body awaiting funeral rites --- Ayodhya plunges into darkness with the demise of the king.]

ತಮಗ್ನಿಮಿವ ಸಂಶಾನ್ತಮಮ್ಬುಹೀನಮಿವಾರ್ಣವಮ್.

ಹತಪ್ರಭಮಿವಾದಿತ್ಯಂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್৷৷2.66.1৷৷

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಾಕ್ಷೀ ವಿವಿಧಾಂ ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾ.

ಸಂಶಾನ್ತಮ್ pacified, ಅಗ್ನಿಮಿವ like blazing fire, ಅಮ್ಬುಹೀನಮ್ without water, ಅರ್ಣವಮಿವ like the ocean, ಹತಪ್ರಭಮ್ bereft of brightness, ಆದಿತ್ಯಮಿವ like the Sun, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ಥಮ್ ascended heaven, ತಂ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಮ್ that king, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ on seeing, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಾಕ್ಷೀ with her eyes filled with tears, ವಿವಿಧಾಮ್ in several ways, ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾ emaciated with sorrow, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king's, ಶಿರಃ head, ಉಪಗೃಹ್ಯ having grasped, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ಪ್ರತಿ looking at Kaikeyi, ಅಭಾಷತ uttered.

On seeing the king who ascended the heaven just as a blazing fire suddenly extinguishes, or like the ocean emptied of water or the Sun bereft of splendour Kausalya raised the head of the king on to her lap, her eyes filled with tears and body shrunk in sorrow, looked at Kaikeyi and said:
ತಮಗ್ನಿಮಿವ ಸಂಶಾನ್ತಮಮ್ಬುಹೀನಮಿವಾರ್ಣವಮ್.

ಸಕಾಮಾ ಭವ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಭುಙ್ಕ್ಷ್ವ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್.

ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಾನಮೇಕಾಗ್ರಾ ನೃಶಂಸೇ! ದುಷ್ಟಚಾರಿಣಿ!৷৷2.66.3৷৷


ನೃಶಂಸೇ! O cruel one!, ದುಷ್ಟಚಾರಿಣಿ! O perverse wretch!, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! O Kaikeyi!, ಸಕಾಮಾ ಭವ remain with your wishes fulfilled, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ forsaking, ಏಕಾಗ್ರಾ with one objective, ಅಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್ without any obstacle, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಭುಙ್ಕ್ಷ್ವ enjoy.

O cruel one! O perverse wretch, O Kaikeyi, your wishes have been fulfilled. You have forsaken the king, that was your only objective. (Now) enjoy the kingdom alone without any obstacles on your way.
ವಿಹಾಯ ಮಾಂ ಗತೋ ರಾಮಃ ಭರ್ತಾ ಚ ಸ್ವರ್ಗತೋ ಮಮ.

ವಿಪಥೇ ಸಾರ್ಥಹೀನೇವ ನಾಹಂ ಜೀವಿತುಮುತ್ಸಹೇ৷৷2.66.4৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಾಮ್ me, ವಿಹಾಯ having left, ಗತಃ has gone, ಮಮ my, ಭರ್ತಾ ಚ lord also, ಸ್ವರ್ಗತಃ has ascended heaven, ವಿಪಥೇ on a wrong path, ಸಾರ್ಥಹೀನೇವ without well-wishers ಅಹಮ್ I, ಜೀವಿತುಮ್ to live, ನ ಉತ್ಸಹೇ do not desire.

Rama has gone away leaving me. My lord has ascended the heaven, traversing the wrong road. With my well-wishers gone, I do not want to live.
ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ತಂ ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ ಕಾ ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ದೈವತಮಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಇಚ್ಛೇಜ್ಜೀವಿತುಮನ್ಯತ್ರ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಧರ್ಮಣಃ৷৷2.66.5৷৷


ತ್ಯಕ್ತಧರ್ಮಣಃ one who has abandoned righteousness, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ ಅನ್ಯತ್ರ other than Kaikeyi, ಕಾ ಸ್ತ್ರೀ which woman, ಆತ್ಮನಃ her own, ದೈವತಮ್ god, ತಂ ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ her husband, ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ having abandoned, ಜೀವಿತುಮ್ to live, ಇಚ್ಛೇತ್ desires.

Which woman wishes to live, leaving her god-like husband, except Kaikeyi who has given up her sense of duty?
ನ ಲುಬ್ಧೋ ಬುಧ್ಯತೇ ದೋಷಾನ್ ಕಿಮ್ಪಾಕಮಿವ ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್.

ಕುಬ್ಜಾನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ರಾಘವಾಣಾಂ ಕುಲಂ ಹತಮ್৷৷2.66.6৷৷


ಲುಬ್ಧ: a greedy man, ಕಿಮ್ಪಾಕಮ್ a poisonous fruit of bad taste, ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ನಿವ as if one has eaten, ದೋಷಾನ್ faults, ನ ಬುಧ್ಯತೇ does not know, ಕುಬ್ಜಾನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ on account of the hunchback, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ರಾಘವಾಣಾಮ್ of Raghus, ಕುಲಮ್ race, ಹತಮ್ is destroyed.

Like a greedy man who eats the (poisonous) kimpaka fruit without realising the defects of the fruit, Kaikeyi has destroyed the Raghu race on account of the hunchback (Manthara).
ಅನಿಯೋಗೇ ನಿಯುಕ್ತೇನ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ರಾಮಂ ವಿವಾಸಿತಮ್.

ಸಭಾರ್ಯಂ ಜನಕಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪರಿತಪ್ಸ್ಯತ್ಯಹಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.66.7৷৷


ಸಭಾರ್ಯಮ್ with wife, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅನಿಯೋಗೇ is an unworthy act, ನಿಯುಕ್ತೇನ ordered, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ವಿವಾಸಿತಮ್ has been banished, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಜನಕಃ Janaka, ಅಹಂ ಯಥಾ like me, ಪರಿತಪ್ಸ್ಯತಿ will suffer.

Hearing the unrighteous action ordered by the king in banishing Rama and his wife king Janaka will suffer great agony like me.
ಸ ಮಾಮನಾಥಾಂ ವಿಧವಾಂ ನಾದ್ಯ ಜಾನಾತಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ.

ರಾಮಃ ಕಮಲಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ ಜೀವನ್ನಾಶಮಿತೋ ಗತಃ৷৷2.66.8৷৷


ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ virtuous, ಕಮಲಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ who has lotus-petal like eyes, ಜೀವನ್ even though alive, ಇತಃ from here, ನಾಶಮ್ destruction, ಗತಃ obtained, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅನಾಥಾಮ್ without protector, ವಿಧವಾಮ್ without husband, ನ ಜಾನಾತಿ does not know.

That virtuous Rama of lotus-petal-eyes has left this place for good, and does not know that I am without a protector, being a widow now.
ವಿದೇಹರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಸುತಾ ತಥಾ ಸೀತಾ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ದುಃಖಸ್ಯಾನುಚಿತಾ ದುಃಖಂ ವನೇ ಪರ್ಯುದ್ವಿಜಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.66.9৷৷


ತಥಾ also, ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ a miserable woman, ದುಃಖಸ್ಯ of hardships, ಅನುಚಿತಾ unworthy, ವಿದೇಹರಾಜಸ್ಯ king Videha's, ಸುತಾ daughter, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ವನೇ in the forest, ದುಃಖಮ್ great sorrow, ಪರ್ಯುದ್ವಿಜಿಷ್ಯತಿ will be agitated in her mind.

In the same way Sita, daughter of the king of Videha, who does not deserve hardships will be in deep agony.
ನದತಾಂ ಭೀಮಘೋಷಾಣಾಂ ನಿಶಾಸು ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್.

ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ನೂನಂ ಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಾ ರಾಘವಂ ಸಂಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.66.10৷৷


ನಿಶಾಮ್ at night, ಭೀಮಘೋಷಾಣಾಮ್ ghastly sounds, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್ of animals and birds, ನದತಾಮ್ by those making sounds, ನಿಶಮ್ಯ having heard, ಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಾ frightened, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಸಂಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will take shelter.

Hearing the ghastly sounds of animals and birds, Sita will surely get frightened and take shelter in Rama.
ವೃದ್ಧಶ್ಚೈವಾಲ್ಪಪುತ್ರಶ್ಚ ವೈದೇಹೀಮನುಚಿನ್ತಯನ್.

ಸೋಪಿ ಶೋಕಸಮಾವಿಷ್ಟೋ ನನು ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ ಜೀವಿತಮ್৷৷2.66.11৷৷


ವೃದ್ಧಶ್ಚೈವ aged, ಅಲ್ಪಪುತ್ರಶ್ಚ not having sons, ಸೋಪಿ that Janaka too, ಶೋಕಸಮಾವಿಷ್ಟಃ overpowered by grief, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ Sita, ಅನುಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ constantly thinking, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ ನನು will give up indeed.

Old and sonless Janaka, constantly thinking of Sita and overpowered with grief will surely give up his life.
ಸಾಹಮದ್ಯೈವ ದಿಷ್ಟಾನ್ತಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಪತಿವ್ರತಾ.

ಇದಂ ಶರೀರ ಮಾಲಿಙ್ಗ್ಯ ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹುತಾಶನಮ್৷৷2.66.12৷৷


ಪತಿವ್ರತಾ of faithful wife, ಸಾ ಅಹಮ್ such as myself, ಅದ್ಯೈವ now itself, ದಿಷ್ಟಾನ್ತಮ್ death, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will go to, ಇದಮ್ this, ಶರೀರಮ್ body, ಆಲಿಙ್ಗ್ಯ clasping, ಹುತಾಶನಮ್ in the fire, ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall enter.

As his faithful wife, I shall enter the fire by clasping this (Dasaratha's) body and go to death today itself
ತಾಂ ತತಸ್ಸಮ್ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ವಿಲಪನ್ತೀಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್.

ವ್ಯಪನೀಯ ಸುದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ವ್ಯಾವಹಾರಿಕಾಃ৷৷2.66.13৷৷


ವ್ಯಾವಹಾರಿಕಾಃ maidservants (those who customarily attend on the queens), ಸಮ್ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ having embraced, ವಿಲಪನ್ತೀಮ್ lamenting, ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್ unfortunate, ಸುದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾಮ್ deeply distressed, ತಾಂ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ to that Kausaya, ತತಃ from there, ವ್ಯಪನೀಯ removed.

The servants led away that unfortunate Kausalya who was lamenting in great anguish embracing the body of Dasaratha.
ತೈಲದ್ರೋಣ್ಯಾಮಥಾಮಾತ್ಯಾ ಸಮ್ವೇಶ್ಯ ಜಗತೀಪತಿಮ್.

ರಾಜ್ಞಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಣ್ಯಥಾದಿಷ್ಟಾಶ್ಚಕ್ರುಃ ಕರ್ಮಾಣ್ಯನನ್ತರಮ್৷৷2.66.14৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಆದಿಷ್ಟಾಃ having been instructed, ಅಮಾತ್ಯಾಃ counsellors, ಜಗತೀಪತಿಮ್ the (corpse) of the lord of the world (Dasartha), ತೈಲದ್ರೋಣ್ಯಾಮ್ in an oil tub, ಸಂವೇಶ್ಯ keeping, ಅನನ್ತರಮ್ thereafter, ಕರ್ಮಾಣಿ ceremonies, ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ all, ಚಕ್ರುಃ performed.

The counsellors, instructed (by Vasistha and others), placed the king's body in an oil tub with the understanding that the funeral rites were to be performed hereafter.
ನ ತು ಸಙ್ಕಲನಂ ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಿನಾ ಪುತ್ರೇಣ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ.

ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞಾಃ ಕರ್ತುಮೀಷುಸ್ತೇ ತತೋ ರಕ್ಷನ್ತಿ ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್৷৷2.66.15৷৷


ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞಾಃ conversant with all such matters (relating to the obsequies), ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ counsellors, ವಿನಾ ಪುತ್ರೇಣ without sons, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king's, ಸಙ್ಕಲನಮ್ funeral obsequies, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ನ ಈಷುಃ did not desire, ತತಃ then, ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್ king's body, ರಕ್ಷನ್ತಿ they are protecting.

The counsellors who were acquainted with all such matters (relating to the king's funeral) were unwilling to perform the obsequies in the absence of any of the king's sons. Meanwhile, they kept watch over the deadbody of the king.
ತೈಲದ್ರೋಣ್ಯಾಂ ತು ಸಚಿವೈಶ್ಶಾಯಿತಂ ತಂ ನರಾಧಿಪಮ್.

ಹಾ ಮೃತೋಯಮಿತಿ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಸ್ತಾಃ ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯನ್৷৷2.66.16৷৷


ಸಚಿವೈಃ by counsellors, ತೈಲದ್ರೋಣ್ಯಾಮ್ in the oil vat, ಶಾಯಿತಮ್ made to lay down, ತಂ ನರಾಧಿಪಮ್ that king, ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ on knowing (having seen), ಹಾ alas, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಮೃತಃ is dead, ಇತಿ in this way, ತಾಃ those, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯನ್ cried.

On seeing the king's body laid in the oil vat by the counsellors, the women cried Alas, the king is dead.
ಬಾಹೂನುದ್ಯಮ್ಯ ಕೃಪಣಾಃ ನೇತ್ರಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣೈರ್ಮುಖೈಃ.

ರುದನ್ತ್ಯ ಶ್ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಃ ಕೃಪಣಂ ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯನ್৷৷2.66.17৷৷


ನೇತ್ರಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣೈಃ tears flowing from their eyes, ಮುಖೈಃ with faces, ಕೃಪಣಾಃ piteously, ಬಾಹೂನ್ hands, ಉದ್ಯಮ್ಯ raising, ರುದನ್ತ್ಯಃ groaning, ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಃ burning in grief, ಕೃಪಣಮ್ helplessly, ಪರ್ಯದೇವಯನ್ lamented.

With tears flowing down their faces, piteously raising their arms, groaning in their burning grief, the women lamented helplessly.
ಹಾ ಮಹಾರಾಜ! ರಾಮೇಣ ಸತತಂ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದಿನಾ.

ವಿಹೀನಾಸ್ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೇನ ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ವಿಜಹಾಸಿ ನಃ৷৷2.66.18৷৷


ಹಾ ಮಹಾರಾಜ! Alas, the great king, ಸತತಮ್ always, ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದಿನಾ by a man speaking pleasing words, ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೇನ by one firm in promise, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ವಿಹೀನಾಃ deprived of, ನಃ us, ಕಿಮರ್ಥಮ್ why, ವಿಜಹಾಸಿ are you leaving us?

When we were already deprived of Rama who was always pleasing and truthful, alas, o great king, why did you leave us?
ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ದುಷ್ಟಭಾವಾಯಾಃ ರಾಘವೇಣ ವಿಯೋಜಿತಾಃ.

ಕಥಂ ಪತಿಘ್ನಯಾ ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮ ಸ್ಸಮೀಪೇ ವಿಧವಾ ವಯಮ್৷৷2.66.19৷৷


ರಾಘವೇಣ by Rama, ವಿಯೋಜಿತಾಃ separated, ವಯಮ್ we, ವಿಧವಾಃ widows, ದುಷ್ಟಭಾವಾಯಾಃ one of evil intentions, ಪತಿಘ್ನಯಾಃ slayer of husband, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ Kaikeyi, ಸಮೀಪೇ near, ಕಥಮ್ how?,
ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಘ್ನಯಾಮ can we stay?

A woman of evil intentions, Kaikeyi, at first separated us from Rama. Now she deprived us of our husband. How can we live with one who is a slayer of her husband?
ಸ ಹಿ ನಾಥಸ್ಸದಾಸ್ಮಾಕಂ ತವ ಚ ಪ್ರಭುರಾತ್ಮವಾನ್.

ವನಂ ರಾಮೋ ಗತಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ವಿಹಾಯ ನೃಪತಿಶ್ರಿಯಮ್৷৷2.66.20৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಾಕಮ್ for us, ತವ ಚ to you also, ಸದಾ always, ನಾಥಃ protector, ಪ್ರಭುಃ master, ಆತ್ಮವಾನ್ self-possessed, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ಸಃ that, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ನೃಪತಿಶ್ರಿಯಮ್ royal wealth, ವಿಹಾಯ
leaving, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಗತಃ ಹಿ has gone indeed.

Rama, who was always our and your self-possessed master and protector has gone to the forest, indeed, abandoning royal wealth.
ತ್ವಯಾ ತೇನ ಚ ವೀರೇಣ ವಿನಾ ವ್ಯಸನಮೋಹಿತಾಃ.

ಕಥಂ ವಯಂ ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಃ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಚ ವಿದೂಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.66.21৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿನಾ without you, ತೇನ ವೀರೇಣ ವಿನಾ without that hero, ವ್ಯಸನಮೋಹಿತಾಃ overwhelmed with grief, ವಯಮ್ we, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ವಿದೂಷಿತಾಃ ಚ having being abused, ಕಥಮ್ how, ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಃ can we live?

Without you and without the heroic Rama, how can we live overwhelmed with grief and enduring the abuses of Kaikeyi?
ಯಯಾ ತು ರಾಜಾ ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ ಸನ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಾ ಸ್ಸಾಕಮನ್ಯಂ ನ ಹಾಸ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.66.22৷৷


ಯಯಾ by such a person (Kaikeyi), ರಾಜಾ the king, ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ valiant, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ also Lakshmana, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಸನ್ತ್ಯಕ್ತಾಃ have been abandoned, ಸಾ that Kaikeyi, ಅನ್ಯಮ್ other, ಕಮ್ whom, ನ ಹಾಸ್ಯತಿ will not cast aside?

Why will not Kaikeyi who has abandoned the king, valiant Rama and Lakshmana along with Sita cast aside others?
ತಾ ಬಾಷ್ಪೇಣ ಚ ಸಂವೀತಾಶ್ಶೋಕೇನ ವಿಪುಲೇನ ಚ.

ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ತಾಃ ವರಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ those excellent wives, ಬಾಷ್ಪೇಣ shedding tears, ವಿಪುಲೇನ with profound, ಶೋಕೇನ ಚ grief, ಸಂವೀತಾಃ overwhelmed, ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾಃ cheerlessly, ವ್ಯವೇಷ್ಟನ್ತ are lying unconscious on the floor.

The excellent wives of Dasaratha, overwhelmed with profound grief and tears, are lying unconcious on the floor.
ನಿಶಾ ಚನ್ದ್ರವಿಹೀನೇವ ಸ್ತ್ರೀವ ಭರ್ತೃವಿವರ್ಜಿತಾ.

ಪುರೀ ನಾರಾಜತಾಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ಹೀನಾ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ৷৷2.66.24৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the great, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ king, ಹೀನಾ deprived, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಪುರೀ city of Ayodhya, ಚನ್ದ್ರವಿಹೀನಾ devoid of moon, ನಿಶೇವ night, ಭರ್ತೃವಿವರ್ಜಿತಾ forsaken by husband, ಸ್ತ್ರೀವ like woman, ನಾರಾಜತ did not shine.

Like night without the Moon, like a woman forsaken by her husband, this city of Ayodhya without that magnanimous king has lost its earlier splendour.
ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಜನಾ ಹಾಹಾಭೂತಕುಲಾಙ್ಗನಾ.

ಶೂನ್ಯಚತ್ವರವೇಶ್ಮಾನ್ತಾ ನ ಬಭ್ರಾಜ ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್৷৷2.66.25৷৷


ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲಜನಾ filled with people shedding tears, ಹಾಹಾಭೂತಕುಲಾಙ್ಗನಾ with the cries of anguish of housewives, ಶೂನ್ಯಚತ್ವರವೇಶ್ಮಾನ್ತಾ infront of their houses and the public squares in between the houses, ಯಥಾ ಪುರಮ್ city with its earlier brilliance, ನ ಬಭ್ರಾಜ does not shine.

With the people of Ayodhya shedding tears, the housewives crying, in anguish, 'alas alas' the courtyards houses and squares of the roads deserted, the city has lost its
earlier brilliance.
ಗತೇ ತು ಶೋಕಾತ್ ತ್ರಿದಿವಂ ನರಾಧಿಪೇ ಮಹೀತಲಸ್ಥಾಸು ನೃಪಾಙ್ಗನಾಸು ಚ.

ನಿವೃತ್ತಚಾರಸ್ಸಹಸಾ ಗತೋ ರವಿಃ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಚಾರಾ ರಜನೀ ಹ್ಯುಪಸ್ಥಿತಾ৷৷2.66.26৷৷


ನರಾಧಿಪೇ when the king, ಶೋಕಾತ್ due to grief, ತ್ರಿದಿವಮ್ towards heaven, ಗತೇ ತು having gone, ನೃಪಾಙ್ಗನಾಸು wives of the king, ಮಹೀತಲಸ್ಥಾಸು ಚ lying on the ground, ರವಿಃ the Sun, ಸಹಸಾ instantly, ನಿವೃತ್ತಚಾರಃ ceased his journey, ಗತಃ gone, ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಚಾರಾಃ favourable to night-rangers, ರಜನೀ night, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಾ set in.

When king Dasaratha ascended to heaven due to grief over his son and when his wives were lying on the ground, the Sun ceased his journey and the night favourable to creatures of darkness suddenly set in.
ಋತೇ ತು ಪುತ್ರಾದ್ಧಹನಂ ಮಹೀಪತೇರ್ನರೋಚಯನ್ತೇ ಸುಹೃದಸ್ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ.

ಇತೀವ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಶಯನೇ ನ್ಯವೇಶಯನ್ ವನಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ರಾಜಾನಮಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ದರ್ಶನಮ್৷৷2.66.27৷৷


ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ people who assembled there, ಸುಹೃದಃ friends, ಪುತ್ರಾತ್ ಋತೇ in the absence of a son, ಮಹೀಪತೇಃ king's, ದಹನಮ್ for igniting funeral pyre, ನ ರೋಚಯನ್ತೇ do not agree, ಇತೀವ thus, ವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ having thought, ಅಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ದರ್ಶನಮ್ in an unexpected form, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಶಯನೇ on that bed (in that oil trough), ನ್ಯವೇಶಯನ್ laid.

The well-wishers who asembled, unwilling to ignite the funeral pyre of the king in the absence of any one of his sons laid the king's deadbody in that oil trough in an unexpected manner.
ಗತಪ್ರಭಾ ದ್ಯೌರಿವ ಭಾಸ್ಕರಂ ವಿನಾ ವ್ಯಪೇತನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಣೇವ ಶರ್ವರೀ.

ಪುರೀ ಬಭಾಸೇ ರಹಿತಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ನ ಚಾಸ್ರಕಣ್ಠಾಕುಲಮಾರ್ಗಚತ್ವರಾ৷৷2.66.28৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the great Dasaratha, ರಹಿತಾ bereft of, ಅಸ್ರಕಣ್ಠಾಕುಲಮಾರ್ಗಚತ್ವರಾ courtyards in front of their houses and the squares on the roads filled with people sobbing, ಪುರೀ Ayodhya, ಭಾಸ್ಕರಂ ವಿನಾ without the Sun, ದ್ಯೌರಿವ like the sky, ವ್ಯಪೇತನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಣಾಃ with crowds of stars, ಶರ್ವರೀವ
like night, ಗತಪ್ರಭಾ having lost the brightness, ನ ಬಭಾಸೇ did not shine.

The city, bereft of illustrious Dasaratha was filled with people sobbing in the courtyards in front of their houses and in the squares in between. That city of Ayodhya bereft of brightness, appeared like the day without the Sun and the night without constellations of stars.
ನರಾಶ್ಚ ನಾರ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ಸಙ್ಘಶಃ ವಿಗರ್ಹಮಾಣಾ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಮಾತರಮ್.

ತದಾ ನಗರ್ಯಾಂ ನರದೇವಸಙ್ಕ್ಷಯೇ ಬಭೂವುರಾರ್ತಾ ನ ಚ ಶರ್ಮ ಲೇಭಿರೇ৷৷2.66.29৷৷


ತದಾ then, ನರದೇವಸಙ್ಕ್ಷಯೇ after the demise of the king, ನಗರ್ಯಾಮ್ in the city, ನರಾಶ್ಚ men, ನಾರ್ಯಶ್ಚ women, ಸಙ್ಘಶಃ in groups, ಸಮೇತ್ಯ assembled, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ವಿಗರ್ಹಮಾಣಾಃ denounced, ಆರ್ತಾಃ ಬಭೂವುಃ became extremely distressed, ಶರ್ಮ peace, ನ ಚ ಲೇಭಿರೇ did not have

After the demise of the king, men and women in the city assembled in groups and denounced the mother of Bharata. Extremely distressed, they had no peace of mind.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಷಟ್ಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtysixth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
