[Ministers and brahmins speak about the miserable state of a kingdom without king --- urge Vasistha to name the heir apparent for Ayodhya.]

ಆಕ್ರನ್ದಿತನಿರಾನನ್ದಾ ಸಾಸ್ರಕಣ್ಠಜನಾಕುಲಾ.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮವತತಾ ಸಾ ವ್ಯತೀಯಾಯ ಶರ್ವರೀ৷৷2.67.1৷৷


ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ಆಕ್ರನ್ದಿತನಿರಾನನ್ದಾ rendered cheerless by the lamentations, ಸಾಸ್ರಕಣ್ಠಜನಾಕುಲಾ filled with sobbing people, ಅವತತಾಃ stretched interminably, ಸಾ ಶರ್ವರೀ that night, ವ್ಯತೀಯಾಯ passed away.

The night stretched interminably in Ayodhya, which was filled with sobbing people rendered cheerless by their lamentations.
ವ್ಯತೀತಾಯಾಂ ತು ಶರ್ವರ್ಯಾಮಾದಿತ್ಯಸ್ಯೋದಯೇ ತತಃ.

ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ರಾಜಕರ್ತಾರಃ ಸಭಾಮೀಯುರ್ದ್ವಿಜಾತಯಃ৷৷2.67.2৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಶರ್ವರ್ಯಾಮ್ when the night, ವ್ಯತೀತಾಯಾಂ ತು passed, ಆದಿತ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಉದಯೇ at sunrise, ರಾಜಕರ್ತಾರಃ those who perform royal investiture, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಯಃ brahmins, ಸಮೇತ್ಯ having been called, ಸಭಾಮ್
assembly hall, ಈಯುಃ reached.

When the night finally ended and after the sunrise next day, the brahmins who perform royal investiture having been called and reached the assembly hall.
ಮಾರ್ಕಣ್ಡೇಯೋಥ ಮೌದ್ಗಲ್ಯೋ ವಾಮದೇವಶ್ಚ ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಃ.

ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯನೋ ಗೌತಮಶ್ಚ ಜಾಬಾಲಿಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ৷৷2.67.3৷৷

ಏತೇ ದ್ವಿಜಾ ಸ್ಸಹಾಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ ಪೃಥಗ್ವಾ ಚ ಮುದೀರಯನ್.

ಮಾರ್ಕಣ್ಡೇಯಃ Markandeya, ಅಥ and, ಮೌದ್ಗಲ್ಯಃ Maudgalya, ಅಥ also, ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಃ Kasyapa, ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯನಃ Katyayana, ಗೌತಮಶ್ಚ Gautama also, ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ of great renown, ಜಾಬಾಲಿಶ್ಚ Jabali too, ಏತೇ these, ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ brahmins, ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ ಸಹ with ministers, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ the chief, ರಾಜಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್ king's priest, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮೇವ Vasistha himself, ಅಭಿಮುಖಾಃ approached, ಪೃಥಕ್ different, ವಾಚಮ್ opinions ಉದೀರಯನ್ expressed.

Markandeya, Maudgalya, Kasyapa, Katyayana, Gautama, Jabali of great renown accompanied by ministers and brahmins approached Vasistha, the chief priest of the king and expressed different opinions (on the investiture).
ಅತೀತಾ ಶರ್ವರೀ ದುಃಖಂ ಯಾ ನೋ ವರ್ಷಶತೋಪಮಾ.

ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ಪಞ್ಚತ್ವಮಾಪನ್ನೇ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವೇ৷৷2.67.5৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವೇ this king, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ out of grief over (seperation from) his son, ಪಞ್ಚತ್ವಮ್ dissolution into the five elements (death), ಆಪನ್ನೇ having attained, ಯಾ that night, ನಃ for us, ವರ್ಷಶತೋಪಮಾ like a hundred years, ಶರ್ವರೀ such night, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrowful, ಅತೀತಾ passed.

While king Dasaratha died on account of grief over (separation from) his son and rejoined the five elements, the sorrowful night seemed like a hundred years for us. (commented the assembly of ministers).
ಸ್ವರ್ಗತಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ರಾಮಶ್ಚಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ ರಾಮೇಣೈವ ಗತಸ್ಸಹ৷৷2.67.6৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ the great king, ಸ್ವರ್ಗತಶ್ಚ had attained heaven, ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama also, ಅರಣ್ಯಮ್ in the forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ taken refuge, ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ lustrous, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚ Lakshmana, ರಾಮೇಣೈವ ಸಹ with Rama, ಗತಃ went.

The great king has attained heaven, Rama has taken refuge in the forest and brilliant Lakshmana has also gone with Rama.
ಉಭೌ ಭರತಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೌ ಕೇಕಯೇಷು ಪರನ್ತಪೌ.

ಪುರೇ ರಾಜಗೃಹೇ ರಮ್ಯೇ ಮಾತಾಮಹನಿವೇಶನೇ৷৷2.67.7৷৷


ಪರನ್ತಪೌ destroyers of enemies, ಭರತಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೌ Bharata and Satrughna, ಉಭೌ both, ಕೇಕಯೇಷು in the Kekaya kingdom, ರಾಜಗೃಹೇ at Rajagriha, ಪುರೇ city, ರಮ್ಯೇ beautiful, ಮಾತಾಮಹನಿವೇಶನೇ are in maternal grandfather's palace.

Bharata and Satrughna, destroyers of enemies, are at the beautiful city of Rajagriha in the Kekaya kingdom, the palace of their maternal grandfather's palace.
ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮಿಹಾದ್ಯೈವ ಕಶ್ಚಿದ್ರಾಜಾ ವಿಧೀಯತಾಮ್.

ಅರಾಜಕಂ ಹಿ ನೋ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಂ ವಿನಾಶಂ ಸಮವಾಪ್ನುಯಾತ್৷৷2.67.8৷৷


ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮ್ in the race of Ikshvakus, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ anyone, ಇಹ here, ಅದ್ಯೈವ right now, ರಾಜಾ as king, ವಿಧೀಯತಾಮ್ should be made, ಅರಾಜಕಮ್ without a king, ನಃ our, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ country, ವಿನಾಶಮ್ destruction, (ಸಮ್ ಅವ) ಆಪ್ನುಯಾತ್ will attain.

Therefore, let someone from the race of Ikshvakus be appointed king right now. since without a king, the country will be destroyed.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ವಿದ್ಯುನ್ಮಾಲೀ ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಃ.

ಅಭಿವರ್ಷತಿ ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯೋ ಮಹೀಂ ದಿವ್ಯೇನ ವಾರಿಣಾ৷৷2.67.9৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ವಿದ್ಯುನ್ಮಾಲೀ garlanded with a row of lightning, ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಃ thunderous, ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯಃ rain-god, ಮಹೀಮ್ the earth, ದಿವ್ಯೇನ with celestial, ವಾರಿಣಾ with rain, ನಾಭಿವರ್ಷತಿ does not shower.

In a country without a king, thunderous clouds garlanded by lightning would no longer water the earth with celestial showers.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಬೀಜಮುಷ್ಟಿಃ ಪ್ರಕೀರ್ಯತೇ.

ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಪಿತುಃ ಪುತ್ರೋ ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ವಾ ವರ್ತತೇ ವಶೇ৷৷2.67.10৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಬೀಜಮುಷ್ಟಿಃ handfuls of seeds, ನ ಪ್ರಕೀರ್ಯತೇ will not be sown (sprout), ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there no king, ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ವಾ or wife, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವಶೇ control, ನ ವರ್ತತೇ do not remain.

Where there is no king, even a handful of seeds will not be sown (will not sprout). In a kingless kingdom, a son or a wife will not obey the father (head of the family).
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಧನಂ ಚಾಸ್ತಿ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಪ್ಯರಾಜಕೇ.

ಇದ ಮತ್ಯಾಹಿತಂ ಚಾನ್ಯತ್ಕುತಸ್ಸತ್ಯ ಮರಾಜಕೇ৷৷2.67.11৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ when there is no king, ಧನಮ್ wealth, ನಾಸ್ತಿ not, ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಪಿ even wife, ನಾಸ್ತಿ is not, ಅತ್ಯಾಹಿತಮ್ cause of great peril, ಅನ್ಯತ್ another, ಇದಂ ಚ this one also exists, ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there no king, ಸತ್ಯಮ್ truth, ಕುತಃ where?

In a kingdom without a king wealth cannot be preserved, no wife would like to stay (with her husband). There is one more cause for a great peril, that is, there is no place for truth in a country (where there is no king).
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಕಾರಯನ್ತಿ ಸಭಾಂ ನರಾಃ.

ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ ಚ ರಮ್ಯಾಣಿ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ ಪುಣ್ಯಗೃಹಾಣಿ ಚ৷৷2.67.12৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ನರಾಃ people, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ rejoiced, ಸಭಾಮ್ assembly, ರಮ್ಯಾಣಿ delightful, ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ gardens, ಪುಣ್ಯಗೃಹಾಣಿ sacred edifices (like temples), ನ ಕಾರಯನ್ತಿ are not built.

In a country where there is no king, no assemblies are convened by pleasure seeking people, nor do they build delightful gardens or sacred edifices.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಯಜ್ಞಶೀಲಾ ದ್ವಿಜಾತಯಃ.

ಸತ್ರಾಣ್ಯನ್ವಾಸತೇ ದಾನ್ತಾ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾ ಸ್ಸಂಶಿತವ್ರತಾಃ৷৷2.67.13৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಯಜ್ಞಶೀಲಾಃ where sacrificial ceremonies are conducted, ದಾನ್ತಾಃ self-controlled, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಃ versed in the study of Vedas, ಸಂಶಿತವ್ರತಾಃ of rigorous austerity, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಯಃ brahmins, ಸತ್ರಾಣಿ sacrifices, ನ ಅನ್ವಾಸತೇ do not practise.

In a country without a king, self-controlled brahmins in charge of sacrificial ceremonies, well-versed in the study of Vedas and strict followers of austerity will not function.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಮಹಾಯಜ್ಞೇಷು ಯಜ್ವನಃ.

ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾ ವಸುಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾ ವಿಸೃಜನ್ತ್ಯಾಪ್ತದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಃ৷৷2.67.14৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಮಹಾಯಜ್ಞೇಷು in great sacrifices, ಯಜ್ವನಃ the officiating priests, ವಸುಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾಃ wealthy, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಃ brahmins, ಆಪ್ತದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಃ abundant gifts, ನ ವಿಸೃಜನ್ತಿ do not offer.

In a country without a king wealthy brahmins, who have performed great sacrifices, do not offer abundance of gifts to the officiating priests.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಪ್ರಭೂತನಟನರ್ತಕಾಃ.

ಉತ್ಸವಾಶ್ಚ ಸಮಾಜಾಶ್ಚ ವರ್ಧನ್ತೇ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರವರ್ಧನಾಃ৷৷2.67.15৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಪ್ರಭೂತನಟನರ್ತಕಾಃ actors and dancers in large numbers, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರವರ್ಧನಾಃ promoting the welfare of the country, ಉತ್ಸವಾಶ್ಚ celebrations, ಸಮಾಜಾಶ್ಚ assemblies, ನ ವರ್ಧನ್ತೇ do not prosper.

In a country without a king, celebrations of associations promoting the welfare of the country, actors and dancers in large numbers do not prosper.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾ ವ್ಯವಹಾರಿಣಃ.

ಕಥಾಭಿರನುರಜ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಕಥಾಶೀಲಾಃ ಕಥಾಪ್ರಿಯೈಃ৷৷2.67.16৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ವ್ಯವಹಾರಿಣಃ those engaged in
law-suits, ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾಃ succeed, ನ not, ಕಥಾಶೀಲಾಃ those who are accustomed to story-telling, ಕಥಾಪ್ರಿಯೈಃ with those who love to listen to stories, ಕಥಾಭಿಃ with stories, ನ ಅನುರಜ್ಯನ್ತೇ are not entertained.

Where there is no king, those engaged in law-suits will not succeed and those who are accustomed to story-telling will not entertain those who love to listen to stories.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ.

ಸಾಯಾಹ್ನೇ ಕ್ರೀಡಿತುಂ ಯಾನ್ತಿ ಕುಮಾರ್ಯೋ ಹೇಮಭೂಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.67.17৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಹೇಮಭೂಷಿತಾಃ adorned with golden ornaments, ಕುಮಾರ್ಯಃ maidens, ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ having met together, ಸಾಯಾಹ್ನೇ in the evening, ಕ್ರೀಡಿತುಮ್ for sporting, ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ in the pleasure gardens, ನಯಾನ್ತಿ will not go.

In a country without a king, young ladies adorned with golden ornaments no longer meet in the evening at the pleasure garden for sporting.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ವಾಹನೈ ಶಶೀಘ್ರಗಾಮಿಭಿಃ.

ನರಾ ನಿರ್ಯಾನ್ತ್ಯರಣ್ಯಾನಿ ನಾರೀಭಿಸ್ಸಹ ಕಾಮಿನಃ৷৷2.67.18৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಕಾಮಿನಃ pleasure-seeking men, ನರಾಃ men,
ನಾರೀಭಿಃ with women too, ಶೀಘ್ರಗಾಮಿಭಿಃ by swift moving, ವಾಹನೈಃ chariots, ಅರಣ್ಯಾನಿ in the woods (for recreation), ನ ನಿರ್ಯಾನ್ತಿ will not go.

In a country without a king, pleasure-seeking men will not drive in the woods on swift-moving chariots with women.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಧನವನ್ತಸ್ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ.

ಶೇರತೇ ವಿವೃತದ್ವಾರಾಃ ಕೃಷಿಗೋರಕ್ಷಜೀವಿನಃ৷৷2.67.19৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಕೃಷಿಗೋರಕ್ಷಜೀವಿನಃ living by farming and protecting cattle, ಧನವನ್ತಃ wealthy people, ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ well-protected, ವಿವೃತದ್ವಾರಾಃ with the
doors wide open, ನ ಶೇರತೇ do not sleep.

In a country without a king, wealthy people who live on farming and raising cattle cannot sleep safely in their homes with doors wide open.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಬದ್ಧಘಣ್ಟಾವಿಷಾಣಿನಃ.

ಅಟನ್ತಿ ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗೇಷು ಕುಞ್ಜರಾ ಷಷ್ಟಿಹಾಯನಾಃ৷৷2.67.20৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಷಷ್ಟಿಹಾಯನಾಃ sixty years of age, ಕುಞ್ಜರಾಃ elephants, ಬದ್ಧಘಣ್ಟಾವಿಷಾಣಿನಃ of tusks adorned with bells, ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗೇಷು on the highways, ನ ಅಟನ್ತಿ will not wander about.

In a country without a king, young elephants of sixty years of age, their tusks adorned with bells no longer wander about on the highways.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಶರಾನ್ಸನ್ತತಮಸ್ಯತಾಮ್.

ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ತಲನಿರ್ಘೋಷ ಇಷ್ವಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಾಮುಪಾಸನೇ৷৷2.67.21৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಇಷ್ವಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ arrows and weapons, ಉಪಾಸನೇ practising (the discharge of), ಸನ್ತತಮ್ ceaselessly, ಶರಾನ್ arrows, ಅಸ್ಯತಾಮ್ shooters throwing, ತಲನಿರ್ಘೋಷಃ clappings of the cord on the skin shield (Tala means a protective
covering made of hard skin worn on the left hand to prevent injury), ನ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ are not heard.

In a country without a king, the sounds of the ceaseless discharge of arrows and practice of weapons, the clappings of the cord on the skin shield of shooters throwing the arrows are no longer heard.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ವಣಿಜೋ ದೂರಗಾಮಿನಃ.

ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ ಕ್ಷೇಮಮಧ್ವಾನಂ ಬಹುಪಣ್ಯಸಮಾಚಿತಾಃ৷৷2.67.22৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ದೂರಗಾಮಿನಃ travelling long distances, ವಣಿಜಃ
merchants, ಬಹುಪಣ್ಯಸಮಾಚಿತಾಃ with several kinds of marketable goods, ಕ್ಷೇಮಮ್ safely, ಅಧ್ವಾನಮ್ on the way, ನ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ do not go.

In a country without a king merchants travelling long distances with several kinds of saleable goods cannot go safely on their way.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಚರತ್ಯೇಕಚರೋ ವಶೀ.

ಭಾವಯನ್ನಾತ್ಮನಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಯತ್ರ ಸಾಯಂಗೃಹೋ ಮುನಿಃ৷৷2.67.23৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಏಕಚರಃ moving alone, ವಶೀ self-controlled, ಆತ್ಮನಾ in mind, ಆತ್ಮಾನಾಮ್ on the higher self, ಭಾವಯನ್ contemplating, ಯತ್ರಸಾಯಂ ಗೃಹಃ inn, ಮುನಿಃ ascetic, ನ ಚರತಿ does not wander.

In a country where there is no king, an ascetic who (normally) moves alone, self-controlled and contemplating on the higher self no longer wanders or rests in the inn.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಂ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ.

ನಚಾಪ್ಯರಾಜಕೇ ಸೇನಾ ಶತ್ರೂನ್ವಿಷಹತೇ ಯುಧಿ৷৷2.67.24৷৷


ನಾರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in a country, ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಮ್ security of possession, ನ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ
does not exist, ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಸೇನಾ army, ಯುಧಿ in a battle, ಶತ್ರೂನ್ enemies, ನ ವಿಷಹತೇ not be able to oppose.

In a country without a king, there is no security of possessions and the army cannot withstand the enemy in a battle.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಹೃಷ್ಟೈಃ ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ.

ನರಾಸ್ಸಂಯಾನ್ತಿ ಸಹಸಾ ರಥೈಶ್ಚ ಪರಿಮಣ್ಡಿತಾಃ৷৷2.67.25৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ without a king, ಜನಪದೇ in the country, ನರಾಃ men, ಪರಿಮಣ್ಡಿತಾಃ well-dressed, ಹೃಷ್ಟೈಃ enthusiastically, ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ of excellent horses, ರಥೈಶ್ಚ chariots, ಸಹಸಾ at once, ನ ಸಂಯಾನ್ತಿ
will not go.

In a country without a king, well-dressed men are no longer enthusiastic to drive on excellent horses and on chariots.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ನರಾಶ್ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿಶಾರದಾಃ.

ಸಂವದನ್ತೋವತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತೇ ವನೇಷೂಪವನೇಷು ಚ৷৷2.67.26৷৷


ಅರಾಜಕೇ with no king, ಜನಪದೇ in the country, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿಶಾರದಾಃ those well-versed in scriptures, ನರಾಃ people, ವನೇಷು in the forests, ಉಪವನೇಷು ಚ in the (recreational) gardens, ಸಂವದನ್ತಃ conversing, ನ ಅವತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತೇ do not stay.

In a country with no king people proficient in scriptures do not withdraw to the forests and (recreational) gardens for debates (on scriptures).

In a country where there is no king, people who are disciplined in spiritual practices do not offer garlands of flowers, sweetmeats and alms while worshipping gods.
ನಾರಾಜಕೇ ಜನಪದೇ ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುರೂಷಿತಾಃ.

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾ ವಿರಾಜನ್ತೇ ವಸನ್ತ ಇವ ಶಾಖಿನಃ৷৷2.67.28৷৷

In a country where there is no king, the princes, anointed with sandal paste and agaru, no longer look graceful like blosoming trees in spring time.
ಯಥಾ ಹ್ಯನುದಕಾ ನದ್ಯಃ ಯಥಾ ವಾಪ್ಯತೃಣಂ ವನಮ್.

ಅಗೋಪಾಲಾ ಯಥಾ ಗಾವಸ್ತಥಾ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮರಾಜಕಮ್৷৷2.67.29৷৷


ಅನುದಕಾಃ without water, ನದ್ಯಃ rivers, ಯಥಾ as, ಆತೃಣಮ್ without vegetation, ವನಮ್ forest, ಯಥಾ ವಾ or as, ಆಗೋಪಾಲಾಃ without cowherds, ಗಾವಃ cows, ಯಥಾ as, ಅರಾಜಕಮ್ without a king, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ country, ತಥಾ is like that.

(The kingdom without a king) is like rivers without water, forests without vegetation and cows without cowherds.
ಧ್ವಜೋ ರಥಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಧೂಮೋ ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ವಿಭಾವಸೋಃ.

ತೇಷಾಂ ಯೋ ನೋ ಧ್ವಜೋ ರಾಜಾ ಸ ದೇವತ್ವಮಿತೋ ಗತಃ৷৷2.66.30৷৷


ರಥಸ್ಯ of the chariot, ಧ್ವಜಃ the pennant, ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಮ್ a mark of identification, ವಿಭಾವಸೋಃ for fire, ಧೂಮಃ smoke, ಜ್ಞಾನಮ್ is a mark of identification, ತೇಷಾಮ್ for such, ನಃ for us, ಯಃ that, ಧ್ವಜಃ pennant (with his magnanimity we are recognised), ಸಃ ರಾಜಾ that king, ಇತಃ from here, ದೇವತ್ವಮ್ to heaven, ಗತಃ has gone.

The pennant is an identification for one's chariot. Smoke is a mark of identifying fire. All of us are recognised by the pennant (magnanimity) of the king and such a king has gone to heaven.

ಅರಾಜಕೇ where there is no king, ಜನಪದೇ in the country, ಕಸ್ಯ ಚಿತ್ for any one, ಸ್ವಕಮ್ as his own, ನ ಭವತಿ does not exist, ನರಾಃ men, ಮತ್ಸ್ಯಾಃ ಇವ like fish, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ ceaselessly, ಪರಸ್ಪರಮ್ one another, ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ತಿ devour.

In a country where there is no king, no one can own anything and, like fish, people devour one another ceaselessly.
ಯೇ ಹಿ ಸಮ್ಭಿನ್ನಮರ್ಯಾದಾ ನಾಸ್ತಿಕಾಶ್ಛಿನ್ನಸಂಶಯಾಃ.

ತೇಪಿ ಭಾವಾಯ ಕಲ್ಪನ್ತೇ ರಾಜದಣ್ಡನಿಪೀಡಿತಾಃ৷৷2.67.32৷৷


ಸಮ್ಭಿನ್ನಮರ್ಯಾದಾಃ those disregarding the bounds of morality, ಛಿನ್ನಸಂಶಯಾಃ dispelling doubts, ಯೇ ಹಿ those, ನಾಸ್ತಿಕಾಃ atheists, ತೇಪಿ they also, ರಾಜದಣ್ಡನಿಪೀಡಿತಾಃ when subjected to royal punishment, ಭಾವಾಯ for virtuous path, ಕಲ್ಪನ್ತೇ adopt.

Atheists, who disregard the bounds of morality and live freely dispelling doubts will tend to follow virtuous path out of fear when subjected to royal punishment.
ಯಥಾ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಶ್ಶರೀರಸ್ಯ ನಿತ್ಯಮೇವ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ.

ತಥಾ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೋ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಭವಸ್ಸತ್ಯಧರ್ಮಯೋಃ৷৷2.67.33৷৷


ದೃಷ್ಟಿಃ eye, ನಿತ್ಯಮೇವ perpetually, ಯಥಾ as, ಶರೀರಸ್ಯ of the body (for its protection), ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ is engaged, ತಥಾ similarly, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಃ king, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಸ್ಯ for the country's, ಸತ್ಯಧರ್ಮಯೋಃ for truth and ethics, ಪ್ರಭವಃ is the source.

The king is the source for protecting the truth and morality of a country like the eye
which perpetually watches the welfare of the body.
ರಾಜಾ ಸತ್ಯಂ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ ರಾಜಾ ಕುಲವತಾಂ ಕುಲಮ್.

ರಾಜಾ ಮಾತಾ ಪಿತಾ ಚೈವ ರಾಜಾ ಹಿತಕರೋ ನೃಣಾಮ್৷৷2.67.34৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ಸತ್ಯಂ ಚ truth, ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ righteousness, ರಾಜಾ king, ಕುಲವತಾಮ್ for men of good families, ಕುಲಮ್ family, ರಾಜಾ king alone, ಮಾತಾ mother, ಪಿತಾಚೈವ father also, ರಾಜಾ king, ನೃಣಾಮ್ for people, ಹಿತಕರಃ one who renders welfare.

The king is the protector of truth and righteousness, of men of good families. He is father, and mother. He alone renders welfare of the people.
ಯಮೋ ವೈಶ್ರವಣ ಶ್ಶಕ್ರಃ ವರುಣಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ವಿಶೇಷ್ಯನ್ತೇ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ ವೃತ್ತೇನ ಮಹತಾ ತತಃ৷৷2.67.35৷৷


ತತಃ for that reason, ಯಮಃ lord of death, Yama, ವೈಶ್ರವಣಃ Vaisravana, ಶಕ್ರಃ Indra, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ mighty, ವರುಣಶ್ಚ Varuna, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by the king, ಮಹತಾ excellent, ವೃತ್ತೇನ with conduct ವಿಶೇಷ್ಯನ್ತೇ are surpassed.

Hence, the king with his excellent conduct surpasses mighty Yama, Vaisravana, Indra and Varuna.
ಅಹೋ ತಮ ಇವೇದಂ ಸ್ಯಾನ್ನಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಯೇತ ಕಿಞ್ಚನ.

ರಾಜಾ ಚೇ ನ್ನ ಭವೇ ಲ್ಲೋಕೇ ವಿಭಜ ಸಾಧ್ವಸಾಧುನೀ৷৷2.67.36৷৷


ಅಹೋ how great, ರಾಜಾ a king, ಸಾಧ್ವಸಾಧುನೀ good and evil actions, ವಿಭಜನ್ showing the distinction, ಲೋಕೇ in the world, ನ ಭವೇದ್ಯದಿ if it were not to happen, ಇದಮ್ this, ತಮಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ would be darkness, ಕಿಞ್ಚನ even a little, ನ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಯೇತ could not have been known.

If the king did not show the distinction between the good and evil actions, this world would have been enveloped by darkness. Nothing could have been seen. How great (is the king)?
ಜೀವತ್ಯಪಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜೇ ತವೈವ ವಚನಂ ವಯಮ್.

ನಾತಿಕ್ರಮಾಮಹೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ವೇಲಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯೇವ ಸಾಗರಃ৷৷2.67.37৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜೇ when the great king, ಜೀವತ್ಯಪಿ was alive also, ವಯಮ್ we, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಸಾಗರಃ sea, ವೇಲಾಮ್ shore, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯೇವ after reaching, ತವ your, ವಚನಮೇವ words, ನಾತಿಕ್ರಮಾಮಹೇ never overstepped.

Even while the great king was alive, we never defied your word like the ocean which does not overstep its shore.
ಸ ನ ಸ್ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ದ್ವಿಜವರ್ಯ ವೃತ್ತಂ ನೃಪಂ ವಿನಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಮರಣ್ಯಭೂತಮ್.

ಕುಮಾರಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಸುತಂ ವದಾನ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಮೇವ ರಾಜಾನಮಿಹಾಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚ৷৷2.67.38৷৷


ದ್ವಿಜವರ್ಯ O best of brahmins!, ಸಃ you, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ all that has happened, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having considered, ನೃಪಂ ವಿನಾ without a king, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಅರಣ್ಯಭೂತಮ್ like a forest, ತ್ವಮೇವ yourself, ಇಹ here, ವದಾನ್ಯಮ್ generous, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕು ಸುತಮ್ born in the Ikshvaku race, ಕುಮಾರಮ್ son, ನಃ for us, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ as king, ಅಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚ consecrate him.

O Vasistha, the best of brahmins, considering all that has happened and knowing that a kingdom without a king is like a forest, you may consecrate a generous son from the Ikshvaku race as our king.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
