[Messengers are sent to get Bharata and Satrughna --- Messengers reach Rajagrha the maternal home of Bharata]

ತೇಷಾಂ ಹಿ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ಮಿತ್ರಾಮಾತ್ಯಗಣಾನ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂಸ್ತಾನಿದಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.68.1৷৷


ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ವಚನಂ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having listened, ವಸಿಷ್ಟಃ Vasistha, ತಾನ್ those, ಮಿತ್ರಾಮಾತ್ಯಗಣಾನ್ host of friends and counsellors (of the king), ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನ್ brahmins, ಇದಂ ವಚಃ these words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚಹ said in reply.

Having listened to their (the counsellors') words, Vasistha replied to the host of friends and counsellors of the king and to all the brahmins:
ಯದಸೌ ಮಾತುಲಕುಲೇ ದತ್ತರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪರಂ ಸುಖೀ.

ಭರತೋ ವಸತಿ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇನ ಸಮನ್ವಿತಃ৷৷2.68.2৷৷

ತಚ್ಛೀಘ್ರಂ ಜವನಾ ದೂತಾ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತು ತ್ವರಿತೈರ್ಹಯೈಃ.

ಆನೇತುಂ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ವೀರೌ ಕಿಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಾಮಹೇ ವಯಮ್৷৷2.68.3৷৷


ದತ್ತರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ on whom the kingdom has been conferred, ಅಸೌ ಭರತಃ that Bharata, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ with his brother, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇನ with Satrughna, ಸಮನ್ವಿತಃ accompanied by, ಯತ್ since, ಮಾತುಲಕುಲೇ in maternal uncle's house, ಪರಮ್ extremely, ಸುಖೀ happy, ವಸತಿ is living, ತತ್ for that reason, ವೀರೌ two valiant, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ brothers, ಆನೇತುಮ್ to bring, ಜವನಾಃ swift ones, ದೂತಾಃ messengers, ತ್ವರಿತೈಃ by high speed, ಹಯೈಃ on horses, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತು let them go, ವಯಮ್ we, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಾಮಹೇ shall we deliberate.

Bharata on whom the kingdom has been conferred is living comfortably in his maternal uncle's house. Let swift messengers go quickly on speeding horses and bring back the valiant brothers, Bharata and Satrughna. What is there to deliberate for us in this matter?
ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ವಿತಿ ತತ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರುವನ್.

ತೇಷಾಂ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರೂತ್ವಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.68.4৷৷


ತತಃ after that, ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತು let them go, ಇತಿ thus, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮ್ addressing Vasistha, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರುವನ್ uttered, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ತತ್ those, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on hearing, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ Vasistha, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Let the messengers go, said all of them to Vasistha. On hearing this, Vasistha replied again.
ಏಹಿ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ! ವಿಜಯ! ಜಯನ್ತಾಶೋಕ! ನನ್ದನ!.

ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಮಿತಿ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ಬ್ರವೀಮಿ ವಃ৷৷2.68.5৷৷


ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ! O Siddhartha, ವಿಜಯ! O Vijaya!, ಜಯನ್ತ! O Jayanta, ಅಶೋಕ! O Asoka, ನನ್ದನ O Nandana, ಏಹಿ come, ವಃ us, ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ addressing all of you, (ಅಹಮ್ I), ಬ್ರವೀಮಿ am telling, ಇತಿಕರ್ತವ್ಯಮ್ what is required to be done, ಶ್ರೂಯಾತಾಮ್ hear.

Calling Siddhartha, Vijaya, Jayanta, Asoka and Nandana, Vasistha said, All of you listen to what is required to be done (by you)!.
ಪುರಂ ರಾಜಗೃಹಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಜವೈ ರ್ಹಯೈಃ.

ತ್ಯಕ್ತಶೋಕೈರಿದಂ ವಾಚ್ಯ ಶ್ಶಾಸನಾದ್ಭರತೋ ಮಮ৷৷2.68.6৷৷


(ಇತಃ from here), ಶೀಘ್ರಜವೈಃ go swiftly, ಹಯೈಃ on horses, ರಾಜಗೃಹಮ್ to Rajagrha, ಪುರಮ್ city, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ ಶೋಕೈಃ concealing signs of grief, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಮಮ my, ಶಾಸನಾತ್ by command, ಇದಮ್ these words, ವಾಚ್ಯಃ should be told.

Go at once from here on swift horses to the city of Rajagrha and concealing signs of grief, convey these words to Bharata as my command:
ಪುರೋಹಿತ ಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಕುಶಲಂ ಪ್ರಾಹ ಸರ್ವೇ ಚ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ.

ತ್ವರಮಾಣಶ್ಚ ನಿರ್ಯಾಹಿ ಕೃತ್ಯಮಾತ್ಯಯಿಕಂ ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.68.7৷৷


ಪುರೋಹಿತಃ the family priest, ತ್ವಾಮ್ your, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ಪ್ರಾಹ has wished, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಶ್ಚ counsellors too, ತ್ವರಮಾಣಃ ಚ in all haste, ನಿರ್ಯಾಹಿ return, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಆತ್ಯಯಿಕಮ್ urgent,
ಕೃತ್ಯಮ್ task exists.

The family priest and all the counsellors wish your welfare. You must return in haste. There is an urgent task required to be done by you.
ಮಾ ಚಾಸ್ಮೈ ಪ್ರೋಷಿತಂ ರಾಮಂ ಮಾ ಚಾಸ್ಮೈ ಪಿತರಂ ಮೃತಮ್.

ಭವನ್ತ ಶ್ಶಂಸಿಷುರ್ಗತ್ವಾ ರಾಘವಾಣಾಮಿಮಂ ಕ್ಷಯಮ್৷৷2.68.8৷৷


ಭವನ್ತಃ all of you, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಆಸ್ಮೈ to him, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪ್ರೋಷಿತಮ್ been exiled to the forest, ಮಾ ಶಂಸಿಷುಃ shall not be communicated, ಪಿತರಮ್ father's, ಮೃತಮ್ demise, ರಾಘವಾಣಾಮ್ of Raghus, ಇಮಮ್ this, ಕ್ಷಯಮ್ decline, ಮಾ ಶಂಸಿಷುಃ shall not communicate.

All of you go there and do not communicate (to Bharata) about the exile of Rama or the demise of his father and the disaster that has befallen the Raghus.
ಕೌಶೇಯಾನಿ ಚ ವಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ವರಾಣಿ ಚ.

ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾದಯ ರಾಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಚ ಗಚ್ಛತ৷৷2.68.9৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ the kings, ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಚ to Bharata, ಕೌಶೇಯಾನಿ ವಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ silk garments, ವರಾಣಿ precious, ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ಚ ornaments, ಆದಾಯ taking with you, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ ಗಚ್ಛತ immediately go.

Take with you silk garments and precious ornaments for the king of Kekaya and Bharata and depart at once.
ದತ್ತಪಥ್ಯಶನಾ ದೂತಾ ಜಗ್ಮುಸ್ಸ್ವಂ ಸ್ವಂ ನಿವೇಶನಮ್.

ಕೇಕಯಾಂ ಸ್ತೇ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ತೋ ಹಯಾನಾರುಹ್ಯ ಸಂಮತಾನ್৷৷2.68.10৷৷


ಕೇಕಯಾನ್ to Kekaya kingdom, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಃ departing, ತೇ ದೂತಾಃ those mesengers, ದತ್ತಪಥ್ಯಶನಾಃ necessaries for the journey, ಸಮ್ಮತಾನ್ excellent, ಹಯಾನ್ horses, ಆರುಹ್ಯ having mounted, ಸ್ವಂ ಸ್ವಮ್ their respective, ನಿವೇಶನಮ್ house, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went.

The messengers set to depart to Kekaya kingdom, carrying with them the necessaries
for their journey went to their respective homes mounted on excellent horses.
ತತಃ ಪ್ರಾಸ್ಥಾನಿಕಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಶೇಷಮನನ್ತರಮ್.

ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನಾಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತಾ ದೂತಾ ಸ್ಸಂತ್ವರಿತಾ ಯಯುಃ৷৷2.68.11৷৷


ತತಃ then, ದೂತಾಃ messengers, ಪ್ರಾಸ್ಥಾನಿಕಮ್ for the journey, ಅನನ್ತರಮ್ required to be done, ಕಾರ್ಯಶೇಷಮ್ rest of the arrangements, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having done, ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ by Vasistha, ಅಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತಾಃ permitted, ಸಂತ್ವರಿತಾಃ in haste, ಯಯುಃ went out.

Having completed the rest of the arrangements for the journey and permitted by Vasistha, the messengers left.
ನ್ಯನ್ತೇನಾಪರತಾಲಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಲಮ್ಬಸ್ಯೋತ್ತರಂ ಪ್ರತಿ.

ನಿಷೇವಮಾಣಾ ಸ್ತೇ ಜಗ್ಮುರ್ನದೀಂ ಮಧ್ಯೇನ ಮಾಲಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.68.12৷৷


ತೇ those messengers, ಅಪರತಾಲಸ್ಯ Aparatala mountain, ನ್ಯನ್ತೇನ to the west of it, ಪ್ರಲಮ್ಬಸ್ಯ Pralamba mountain, ಉತ್ತರಂ ಪ್ರತಿ to the north of, ಮಧ್ಯೇನ in between, ಮಾಲಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Malini, ನಿಷೇವಮಾಣಾಃ serving, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went.

The messengers proceeded in westerly direction for some distance and then crossed the southern end of the Aparatala mountain. Thereafter, they travelled northward along the bank of Malini that flows in between Aparatala and Pralamba mountains.
ತೇ ಹಸ್ತಿನಾಪುರೇ ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಙ್ಮುಖಾ ಯಯುಃ.

ಪಾಞ್ಚಾಲದೇಶಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಮಧ್ಯೇನ ಕುರುಜಾಙ್ಗಲಮ್৷৷2.68.13৷৷

ಸರಾಂಸಿ ಚ ಸುಪೂರ್ಣಾನಿ ನದೀಶ್ಚ ವಿಮಲೋದಕಾಃ.

ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಾ ಸ್ತೇ ಜಗ್ಮುರ್ದೂತಾಃ ಕಾರ್ಯವಶಾದ್ದ್ರುತಮ್৷৷2.68.14৷৷


ತೇ ದೂತಾಃ those messengers, ಹಸ್ತಿನಾಪುರೇ at Hastinapura, ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ Ganga, ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ having crossed, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಙ್ಮುಖಾಃ in the westerly direction, ಯಯುಃ went, ಮಧ್ಯೇನ ಕುರುಜಾಙ್ಗಲಮ್ through the
middle of Kurujangala, ಪಾಞ್ಚಾಲದೇಶಮ್ Panchala country, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಸುಪೂರ್ಣಾನಿ filled with water, ಸರಾಂಸಿ ಚ lakes, ವಿಮಲೋದಕಾಃ of pellucid waters, ನದೀಶ್ಚ rivers, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಾಃ beholding, ಕಾರ್ಯವಶಾತ್ with a view to fulfil their mission, ದ್ರುತಮ್ fast, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went.

The messengers crossed Ganga at Hastinapura, and went in the westerly direction through the middle of Kurujangala and reached the country of Panchala. Beholding lakes full of water and rivers of pellucid waters there, they travelled fast with a view to fulfilling their mission.
ತೇ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನೋದಕಾಂ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂ ನಾನಾವಿಹಗಸೇವಿತಾಮ್.

ಉಪಾತಿಜಗ್ಮುರ್ವೇಗೇನ ಶರದಣ್ಡಾಂ ಜನಾಕುಲಾಮ್৷৷2.68.15৷৷


ತೇ those messengers, ಪ್ರಸನ್ನೋದಕಾಮ್ of calm waters, ದಿವ್ಯಾಮ್ divine, ನಾನಾವಿಹಗಸೇವಿತಾಮ್ frequented by fowls of various species, ಜನಾಕುಲಾಮ್ thronged with people, ಶರದಣ್ಡಾಮ್ Saradanda river, ಉಪಾತಿಜಗ್ಮುಃ crossed and went.

The messengers crossed the divine Saradanda of calm waters frequented by fowls of various speices and thronged with people. And proceeded speedily.
ನಿಕೂಲವೃಕ್ಷಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಸತ್ಯೋಪಯಾಚನಮ್.

ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯಾಭಿವಾದ್ಯಂ ತಂ ಕುಲಿಙ್ಗಾಂ ಪ್ರಾವಿಶನ್ಪುರೀಮ್৷৷2.68.16৷৷


ದಿವ್ಯಮ್ divine, ಸತ್ಯೋಪಯಾಚನಮ್ Satyopayachana (a tree granting the wishes of those who pray for), ನಿಕೂಲವೃಕ್ಷಮ್ a tree on the bank, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯಮ್ paying homage, ತಮ್ that one, ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ಕುಲಿಙ್ಗಾಂಪುರೀಮ್ Kulinga city, ಪ್ರಾವಿಶನ್ entered.

They reached a divine tree (of great powers) known as Satyopayachana tree and having gone round and paid homage they entered the Kulinga city.
ಆಭಿಕಾಲಂ ತತಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ತೇ ಬೋಧಿಭವನಾಚ್ಚ್ಯುತಾಮ್.

ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹೀಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಾಂ ತೇರುರಿಕ್ಷುಮತೀಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.68.17৷৷


ತತಃ from there, ತೇ they, ಅಭಿಕಾಲಮ್ a village known as Abhikala, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having reached, ಬೋಧಿಭವನಾತ್ from Bodhibhavana mountain, ಚ್ಯುತಾಮ್ flowing, ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹೀಮ್ enjoyed by fathers and forefathers, ಪುಣ್ಯಾಮ್ sacred, ಇಕ್ಷುಮತೀಮ್ Ikshumati river, ತೇರುಃ crossed.

From there they reached a village known as Abhikala and crossed the sacred Ikshumati flowing from Bodhibhavana mountain. This region was enjoyed by fathers and forefathers of Dasaratha.
ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪಾನಾಂಶ್ಚ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನ್ವೇದಪಾರಗಾನ್.

ಯಯುರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇನ ಬಾಹ್ಲೀಕಾನ್ ಸುದಾಮಾನಂ ಚ ಪರ್ವತಮ್৷৷2.68.18৷৷


ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಪಾನಾನ್ drinking water with cupped palms, ವೇದಪಾರಗಾನ್ versed in the Vedas, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನ್ brahmins, ಅವೇಕ್ಷಯ having seen, ಬಾಹ್ಲೀಕಾನ್ ಮಧ್ಯೇನ in the middle of Bahlika country, ಸುದಾಮಾನಮ್ known as Sudama, ಪರ್ಯತಂ ಚ mountain, ಯಯುಃ went.

There they saw the brahmins versed in the Vedas and drank water with cupped palms. Then they continued their journey through the middle of Bahlika country, and reached Sudama mountain.
ವಿಷ್ಣೋಃ ಪದಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಾ ವಿಪಾಶಾಂಚಾಪಿ ಶಾಲ್ಮಲೀಮ್.

ನದೀರ್ವಾಪೀ ಸ್ತಟಾಕಾನಿ ಪಲ್ವಲಾನಿ ಸರಾಂಸಿ ಚ৷৷2.68.19৷৷

ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೋ ವಿವಿಧಾಂಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಸಿಂಹಾವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮೃಗ ದ್ವಿಪಾನ್.

ಯಯುಃ ಪಥಾತಿಮಹತಾ ಶಾಸನಂ ಭರ್ತುರೀಪ್ಸವಃ৷৷2.68.20৷৷


ವಿಷ್ಣೋಃ Visnu's, ಪದಮ್ footprints, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಾಃ beholding, ವಿಪಾಶಾಂಚಾಪಿ Vipasa river, ಶಾಲ್ಮಲೀಲಂ ಚಾಪಿ Salmali also, ನದೀಃ rivers, ವಾಪೀಃ deep wells with steps to reach, ತಟಾಕಾನಿ tanks, ಪಲ್ವಲಾನಿ
pools, ಸರಾಂಸಿ ಚ large tanks, ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ different, ಸಿಂಹವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮೃಗ ದ್ವಿಪಾನ್ lions, tigers and elephants, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಃ seeing, ಭರ್ತುಃ master's, ಶಾಸನಮ್ command, ಈಪ್ಸವಃ wishing to fulfil, ಅತಿಮಹತಾ very long, ಪಥಾ journey, ಯಯುಃ went.

Beholding the footprints of Visnu (on Sudama mountain), and seeing Vipasa, and Salmali rivers, trees, streams, deep wells, ponds, pools, large tanks, different kinds of
lions, tigers and elephants, they travelled a long distance with the intention of fulfilling the command of their master.
ತೇ ಶ್ರಾನ್ತವಾಹನಾ ದೂತಾ ವಿಕೃಷ್ಣೇನ ಪಥಾ ತತಃ.

ಗಿರಿವ್ರಜಂ ಪುರವರಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಮಾಸೇದುರಞ್ಜಸಾ৷৷2.68.21৷৷


ವಿಕೃಷ್ಣೇನ by prolonged, ಪಥಾ journey, ಶ್ರಾನ್ತ ವಾಹನಾಃ tired horses, ತೇ ದೂತಾಃ those mesengers, ತತಃ then, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ swiftly, ಅಞ್ಜಸಾ straight on, ಪುರವರಮ್ best of cities, ಗಿರಿವ್ರಜಮ್ Girivrajam, ಆಸೇದುಃ reached.

After a prolonged journey the messengers with their tired horses soon reached Girivraja, the (capital city of Kekaya kingdom) best of cities.
ಭರ್ತುಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಥಂ ಕುಲರಕ್ಷಣಾರ್ಥಂ ಭರ್ತುಶ್ಚ ವಂಶಸ್ಯ ಪರಿಗ್ರಹಾರ್ಥಮ್.

ಅಹೇಡಮಾನಾ ಸ್ತ್ವರಯಾ ಸ್ಮ ದೂತಾ ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಾನ್ತು ತೇ ತತ್ಪುರಮೇವ ಯಾತಾಃ৷৷2.68.22৷৷


ತೇ ದೂತಾಃ those messengers, ಭರ್ತುಃ lord's, ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಥಮ್ to please, ಕುಲರಕ್ಷಣಾರ್ಥಮ್ to preserve the royal dynasty, ಭರ್ತುಃ of the king's, ವಂಶಸ್ಯ the house of the Ikshvakus, ಪರಿಗ್ರಹಾರ್ಥಮ್ for the protection of (royal honour), ತ್ವರಯಾ quickly, ಅಹೇಡಮಾನಾಃ without negligence, ರಾತ್ಯ್ರಾಮ್ in the night, ತತ್ that, ಪುರಮೇವ that city, ಯಾತಾಃ reached.

To please their master (sage Vasistha) and to preserve the royal dynasty and also to protect the honour of the (race and people), the messengers soon reached their destination by night without any negligence of their duty.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyeighth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
