[Manthara informs Kaikeyi about the installation of Rama--happy over the news Kaikeyi gifts away her ornaments.]

ಜ್ಞಾತಿದಾಸೀ ಯತೋ ಜಾತಾ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಸ್ತು ಸಹೋಷಿತಾ.

ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮಾರುರೋಹ ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾ৷৷2.7.1৷৷


ಯತ: ಜಾತಾ from the time of her birth, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಸಹ along with Kaikeyi, ಊಷಿತಾ living, ಜ್ಞಾತಿದಾಸೀ family servant, ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾ casually, ಚನ್ದ್ರಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ resembling the Moon, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಮ್ palace, ಆರುರೋಹ ascended.

The family maid (Manthara) of Kaikeyi who had been living with her since her (Kaikeyi's) birth casually ascended the palace gleaming white like the Moon.
ಸಿಕ್ತರಾಜಪಥಾಂ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾಂ ಪ್ರಕೀರ್ಣಕುಸುಮೋತ್ಕರಾಮ್.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಮನ್ಥರಾ ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾದನ್ವವೈಕ್ಷತ৷৷2.7.2৷৷


ಮನ್ಥರಾ Manthara, ಸಿಕ್ತರಾಜಪಥಾಮ್ highway sprinkled with water, ಪ್ರಕೀರ್ಣಕುಸುಮೋತ್ಕರಾಮ್ strewn with a lot of flowers, ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾಮ್ whole, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ from that, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾತ್ palace, ಅನ್ವವೈಕ್ಷತ beheld.

Manthara beheld from that palace the whole of Ayodhya with its highways sprinkled with water and strewn with a lot of flowers.
ಪತಾಕಾಭಿರ್ವರಾರ್ಹಾಭಿರ್ಧ್ವಜೈಶ್ಚ ಸಮಲಙ್ಕೃತಾಮ್.

ವೃತಾಂ ಛನ್ದಪಥೈಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಶಿರಸ್ಸ್ನಾತಜನೈರ್ವೃತಾಮ್৷৷2.7.3৷৷

ಮನ್ಥರಾ Manthara, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾತ್ from that palace, ವರಾರ್ಹಾಭಿ: by costly, ಪತಾಕಾಭಿ: with banners, ಧ್ವಜೈಶ್ಚ with flags, ಸಮಲಙ್ಕೃತಾಮ್ well-decorated, ಛನ್ದಪಥೈ: ಚ ಅಪಿ labyrinthine thoroughfares also, ವೃತಾಮ್ enveloped by, ಶಿರಸ್ಸ್ನಾತಜನೈ: with men who had, ವೃತಾಮ್ surrounded by, ಮಾಲ್ಯಮೋದಕಹಸ್ತೈ: holding garlands and sweetmeats in their hands, ದ್ವಿಜೇನ್ದ್ರೈ: with the best of brahmins, ಅಭಿನಾದಿತಾಮ್ reverberating, ಶುಕ್ಲ ದೇವಗೃಹದ್ವಾರಾಮ್ with temples with white doors, ಸರ್ವವಾದಿತ್ರನಿಸ್ವನಾಮ್ with sounds from every kind of musical instrument, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಜನಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಮ್ filled with joyful crowds, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಘೋಷಾಭಿನಾದಿತಾಮ್ echoed with the chanting of the Vedas, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟವರಹಸ್ತ್ಯಶ್ವಾಮ್ with the best boisterous horses and elephants, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಣರ್ದಿತಗೋವೃಷಾಮ್ with the lowing and bellowing of cows and bulls, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಮುದಿತೈ: with great joy, ಪೌರೈ: by the citizens, ಉಚ್ಛ್ರಿತಧ್ವಜಮಾಲಿನೀಮ್ encircled by elevated pennants, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ವಿಸ್ಮಯಮಾಗತಾ was astonished.

The city of Ayodhya was decorated with costly banners and pennants. The labyrinthine roads were crowded with people who had (finished) their head-bath and were wandering at will. The temples with their doors painted white were reverberating with the chanting from the Vedas by the best of brahmins holding garlands and sweetmeats in their hands and with sounds of all kinds of musical instruments. The city was filled with spirited horses and elephants. The bulls were
bellowing and the cows were lowing. The citizens with great joy raised the penants encircling the city of Ayodhya. All this left Manthara astonished.
ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷೋತ್ಫುಲ್ಲನಯನಾಂ ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಕ್ಷೌಮವಾಸಿನೀಮ್.

ಅವಿದೂರೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಧಾತ್ರೀಂ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಮನ್ಥರಾ৷৷2.7.7৷৷


ಮನ್ಥರಾ Manthara, ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷೋತ್ಫುಲ್ಲನಯನಾಮ್ whose eyes were expanded with delight, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಕ್ಷೌಮವಾಸಿನೀಮ್ clad in white silk garment, ಅವಿದೂರೇ not very far, ಸ್ಥಿತಾಮ್ standing, ಧಾತ್ರೀಮ್ to
a royal maid, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ enquired.

Seeing a royal maid clad in white silk garment and standing not very far with her eyes expanded in delight Manthara enquired:
ಉತ್ತಮೇನಾಭಿಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾ ಹರ್ಷೇಣಾರ್ಥಪರಾ ಸತೀ.

ರಾಮಮಾತಾ ಧನಂ ಕಿನ್ನು ಜನೇಭ್ಯಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.7.8৷৷


ರಾಮಮಾತಾ Rama's mother, ಅರ್ಥಪರಾಸತೀ one interested in wealth, ಉತ್ತಮೇನ great, ಹರ್ಷೇಣ with joy, ಅಭಿಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾ possessed of, ಜನೇಭ್ಯ: for men, ಧನಮ್ wealth, ಕಿಂ ನು ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛತಿ why is she gifting away?

Why is Rama's mother, forever interested in the accumulation of money gifting away her wealth to men with great joy?
ಅತಿಮಾತ್ರಪ್ರಹರ್ಷೋಯಂ ಕಿಂ ಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ ಶಂಸ ಮೇ.

ಕಾರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಕಿಂ ವಾಪಿ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ৷৷2.7.9৷৷


ಜನಸ್ಯ for men, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಅತಿಮಾತ್ರಪ್ರಹರ್ಷ: exceedingly happy, ಕಿಮ್ why?, ಮೇ to me, ಶಂಸ tell, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟ: delighted, ಮಹೀಪತಿ: king, ಕಿಂ ವಾಪಿ what is he, ಕಾರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ವಾ proposing to do ?

Why do the people look exceedingly happy? Tell me, what the king with great delight is proposing to do?
ವಿದೀರ್ಯಮಾಣಾ ಹರ್ಷೇಣ ಧಾತ್ರೀ ತು ಪರಯಾ ಮುದಾ.

ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇಥ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಯೈ ಭೂಯಸೀಂ ರಾಘವ ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್৷৷2.7.10৷৷


ಧಾತ್ರೀ ತು the royal maid, ಹರ್ಷೇಣ with delight, ವಿದೀರ್ಯಮಾಣಾ bursting, ಅಥ threafter, ಕುಬ್ಜಾಯೈ for that hunchback, ಭೂಯಸೀಮ್ greater, ರಾಘವಶ್ರಿಯಮ್ about the fortune of Rama, ಪರಯಾ great, ಮುದಾ with delight, ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ related.

Bursting with great joy, the royal maid related to the hunchback the great fortune
awaiting the son of the Raghus (Rama).
ಶ್ವಃ ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧಂ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇನ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥೋ ರಾಮಮಭಿಷೇಚಯಿತಾನಘಮ್৷৷2.7.11৷৷


ದಶರಥ: ರಾಜಾ king Dasaratha, ಶ್ವ: tomorrow, ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ under the star Pushya, ರಾಘವಮ್ born in the race of Raghu, ಅನಘಮ್ blameless ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇನ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಚಯಿತಾ will consecrate.

Tomorrow under the spell of the Pushya star, king Dasaratha will consecrate blameless Rama born in the race of Raghu as heir-apparent (the maid said).
ಧಾತ್ರ್ಯಾಸ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಶೃತ್ವಾ ಕುಬ್ಜಾ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಮರ್ಷಿತಾ.

ಕೈಲಾಸಶಿಖರಾಕಾರಾ ತ್ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾದವರೋಹತ৷৷2.7.12৷৷


ಕುಬ್ಜಾ that hunchback, ಧಾತ್ರ್ಯಾ: ವಚನಮ್ the words of royal maid, ಶೃತ್ವಾ having heard, ಅಮರ್ಷಿತಾ was furious, ಕೈಲಾಸಶಿಖರಾಕಾರಾತ್ resembling the peak of mount Kailasa, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಾತ್ from the palace, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ speedily, ಅವರೋಹತ descended.

Having heard these words of the royal maid, the hunchback became furious and speedily descended from that palace resembling the peak of mount Kailasa.
ಸಾ ದಹ್ಯಮಾನಾ ಕೋಪೇನ ಮನ್ಥರಾ ಪಾಪದರ್ಶಿನೀ.

ಶಯಾನಾಮೇತ್ಯ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮಿದಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.7.13৷৷


ಪಾಪದರ್ಶಿನೀ malevolent, ಸಾ ಮನ್ಥರಾ that Manthara, ಕೋಪೇನ with fury, ದಹ್ಯಮಾನಾ burning, ಶಯಾನಾಮ್ as she lay upon her couch, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ಏತ್ಯ having reached, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

The malevolent Manthara on fire with fury reached Kaikeyi lying upon her couch and said:
ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಮೂಢೇ ಕಿಂ ಶೇಷೇ ಭಯಂ ತ್ವಾಮಭಿವರ್ತತೇ.

ಉಪಪ್ಲುತಾಮೌಘೇನ ಕಿಮಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ನ ಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.7.14৷৷


ಮೂಢೇ O senseless one, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ get up, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಶೇಷೇ are sleeping, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಅಭಿವರ್ತತೇ is approaching you, ಅಮೌಘೇನ in a sea of perils, ಉಪಪ್ಲುತಾಮ್ floating, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ about yourself, ನ ಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ why do not you realise?

O senseless one, why are you lying down? Get up! A great fear is gripping you. Why don't you realise that you are floating in a sea of perils.
ಅನಿಷ್ಟೇ ಸುಭಗಾಕಾರೇ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯೇನ ವಿಕತ್ಥಸೇ.

ಚಲಂ ಹಿ ತವ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯಂ ನದ್ಯಾಸ್ಸ್ರೋತ ಇವೋಷ್ಣಗೇ৷৷2.7.15৷৷


ಸುಭಗಾಕಾರೇ you appear to be your husband's darling, ಅನಿಷ್ಟೇ O one disliked (by the husband), ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯೇನ with your good fortune, ವಿಕತ್ಥಸೇ you are boasting, ಉಷ್ಣಗೇ in summer season, ನದ್ಯಾ: river's, ಸ್ರೋತ: ಇವ like a flow, ತವ your, ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯಮ್ good fortune, ಚಲಂ ಹಿ is unstable indeed.

Though you appear to be your husband's darling, in reality he dislikes you. The good fortune you boast of indeed is unstable like the stream of a river in summer.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಾ ತು ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ರುಷ್ಟಯಾ ಪರುಷಂ ವಚಃ.

ಕುಬ್ಜಯಾ ಪಾಪದರ್ಶಿನ್ಯಾ ವಿಷಾದಮಗಮತ್ಪರಮ್৷৷2.7.16৷৷


ರುಷ್ಟಯಾ in a rage, ಪಾಪದರ್ಶಿನ್ಯಾ evil-eyed, ಕುಬ್ಜಯಾ by the hunchback (Manthara), ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಪರುಷಂ ವಚ: harsh words, ಉಕ್ತಾ having spoken, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಪರಮ್ great, ವಿಷಾದಮ್ despondency, ಅಗಮತ್ obtained.

At these harsh words of the furious, evil-eyed hunchback Kaikeyi fell into great despondency.
ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ತ್ವಬ್ರವೀತ್ಕುಬ್ಜಾಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕ್ಷೇಮಂ ನು ಮನ್ಥರೇ.

ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನಾಂ ಹಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ಲಕ್ಷಯೇ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.7.17৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ತು as for Kaikeyi, ಕುಬ್ಜಾಮ್ to the hunchback, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke, ಮನ್ಥರೇ O Manthara!, ಕ್ಷೇಮಮ್ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ all is well I hope?, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನಾಮ್ a dejected face, ಭೃಶದು:ಖಿತಾಮ್ to deeply sorrowful, ಲಕ್ಷಯೇ ಹಿ I observe indeed.

Kaikeyi said to the hunchback, O Manthara! isn't all well with you? I can mark it from your dejected face how greatly distressed you feel, indeed!.
ಮನ್ಥರಾ ತು ವಚ ಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಮಧುರಾಕ್ಷರಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ಕ್ರೋಧಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಾಕ್ಯವಿಶಾರದಾ৷৷2.7.18৷৷


ವಾಕ್ಯವಿಶಾರದಾ skilled in speech, ಮನ್ಥರಾ ತು Manthara, ಮಧುರಾಕ್ಷರಮ್ in sweet accent, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ: ವಚ: the words of Kaikeyi, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಕ್ರೋಧಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾ filled with anger, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Hearing the words of Kaikeyi uttered in a gentle voice, wrathful Manthara skilled in speech, said:
ಸಾ ವಿಷಣ್ಣತರಾ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ಕುಬ್ಜಾ ತಸ್ಯಾ ಹಿತೈಷಿಣೀ.

ವಿಷಾದಯನ್ತೀ ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ ಭೇದಯನ್ತೀ ಚ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷2.7.19৷৷


ಸಾ ಕುಬ್ಜಾ that hunchback, ವಿಷಣ್ಣತರಾ ಭೂತ್ವಾ being still more depressed, ತಸ್ಯಾ: her, ಹಿತೈಷಿಣೀ desiring the welfare, ವಿಷಾದಯನ್ತೀ causing despondency, ರಾಘವಮ್ of Rama, ಭೇದಯನ್ತೀ ಚ also separating, ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ said.

That hunchback feeling still more depressed in her (Kaikeyi's) interest and intending to cause in her despondency and distance Rama from her spoke out:
ಅಕ್ಷಯ್ಯಂ ಸುಮಹದ್ದೇವಿ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಂ ತ್ವದ್ವಿನಾಶನಮ್.

ರಾಮಂ ದಶರಥೋ ರಾಜಾ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.7.20৷৷


ದೇವಿ O queen, ಅಕ್ಷಯ್ಯಮ್ unending, ಸುಮಹತ್ immense, ತ್ವದ್ವಿನಾಶನಮ್ your ruin, ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಮ್ is in the offing, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥ: king Dasaratha, ರಾಮಮ್ of Rama, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ is crowning.

O queen!, your end is approaching, and it has no end and it is overwhelming. King Dasaratha is crowning Rama as heir-apparent.
ಸಾಸ್ಮ್ಯಗಾಧೇ ಭಯೇ ಮಗ್ನಾ ದುಃಖಶೋಕಸಮನ್ವಿತಾ.

ದಹ್ಯಮಾನಾನಲೇನೇವ ತ್ವದ್ಧಿತಾರ್ಥಮಿಹಾಗತಾ৷৷2.7.21৷৷


ಸಾ such I am, ಅಗಾಧೇ in unfathomable, ಭಯೇ in fear, ಮಗ್ನಾ plunged, ದು:ಖಶೋಕಸಮನ್ವಿತಾ stricken with grief and tears, ಅನಲೇನ by fire, ದಹ್ಯಮಾನೇವ as if being burnt, ತ್ವದ್ಧಿತಾರ್ಥಮ್ for your welfare, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಾ have come.

Plunged in unfathomable fear and stricken with grief and tears I am here seeking your well-being and yet consumed as though by fire.
ತವ ದುಃಖೇನ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ ಮಮ ದುಃಖಂ ಮಹದ್ಭವೇತ್.

ತ್ವದ್ವೃದ್ಧೌ ಮಮ ವೃದ್ಧಿಶ್ಚ ಭವೇದತ್ರ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ৷৷2.7.22৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯಿ O Kaikeyi, ತವ ದು:ಖೇನ with your grief, ಮಮ my, ಮಹತ್ great, ದು:ಖಮ್ ಭವೇತ್ distress will occur, ತ್ವದ್ವೃದ್ಧೌ in your prosperity, ಮಮ my, ವೃದ್ಧಿಶ್ಚ prosperity, ಭವೇತ್ would become, ಅತ್ರ in
this aspect, ನ ಸಂಶಯ: there is no doubt.

O Kaikeyi, your sorrow will augment my sorrow. Your prosperity would mean my prosperity. There is no doubt about this.
ನರಾಧಿಪಕುಲೇ ಜಾತಾ ಮಹಿಷೀ ತ್ವಂ ಮಹೀಪತೇಃ!.

ಉಗ್ರತ್ವಂ ರಾಜಧರ್ಮಾಣಾಂ ಕಥಂ ದೇವಿ ನ ಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.7.23৷৷

ಶುದ್ಧಭಾವೇ ನ ಜಾನೀಷೇ ತೇನೈವ ಮತಿಸನ್ಧಿತಾ৷৷2.7.24৷৷


ಭರ್ತಾ your husband, ಧರ್ಮಾವಾದೀ one who speaks of morals, ಶಠ: one who is deceitful, ಶ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಣವಾದೀ one who speaks gently, ದಾರುಣ: ಚ cruel also, ಶುದ್ಧಭಾವೇ of innocent nature, ತೇನ by such person, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಅತಿಸನ್ಧಿತಾ beguiled, ನ ಜಾನೀಷೇ you do not understand.

Your husband speaks morals publicly but in private he is deceitful. He speaks gently but acts cruelly. Because of your innocent nature you are beguiled by him. You do not understand this.
ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಪ್ರಯುಞ್ಜಾನಸ್ತ್ವಯಿ ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಮನರ್ಥಕಮ್.

ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತ: have approached, ಅನರ್ಥಕಮ್ meaningless, ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಮ್ appeasing words, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ಪ್ರಯುಞ್ಜಾನ: while confers, ತೇ ಭರ್ತಾ your husband, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಮೇವ only for Kausalya, ಅರ್ಥೇನ with advantage, ಯೋಜಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will bestow.

When your husband approaches you he swears in meaningless, appeasing words. But today he is going to bestow benefit on Kausalya only.
ಉಪವಾಹ್ಯ ಸ ದುಷ್ಟಾತ್ಮಾ ಭರತಂ ತವ ಬನ್ಧುಷು.

ಕಾಲ್ಯೇ ಸ್ಥಾಪಯಿತಾ ರಾಮಂ ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ನಿಹತಕಣ್ಟಕೇ৷৷2.7.26৷৷


ದುಷ್ಟಾತ್ಮಾ evil-minded one, ಸ: he, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ತವ ಬನ್ಧುಷು to your relations, ಅಪವಾಹ್ಯ having
sent, ಕಾಲ್ಯೇ at dawn tomorrow, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ನಿಹತಕಣ್ಟಕೇ rid of the thorns, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ಸ್ಥಾಪಯಿತಾ will be established.

That evil-minded one, having sent Bharata away to your relations house, is going to install Rama unhindered in the kingdom at dawn tomorrow.
ಶತ್ರುಃ ಪತಿಪ್ರವಾದೇನ ಮಾತ್ರೇವ ಹಿತಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ.

ಆಶೀವಿಷ ಇವಾಙ್ಕೇನ ಬಾಲೇ ಪರಿಧೃತಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.7.27৷৷


ಬಾಲೇ O child! ಮಾತ್ರೇವ like a mother, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಹಿತಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ desirous of well-being, ಆಶೀವಿಷ: venomous serpent, ಅಙ್ಕೇನೇವ in your lap, ಶತ್ರು: enemy, ಪತಿಪ್ರವಾದೇನ with the belief that he is the husband, ಪರಿಧೃತ: preserved.

O innocent lady! with the intention of doing good like a mother to your husband who is your enemy, you are holding on your lap a venomous serpent.
ಯಥಾ ಹಿ ಕುರ್ಯಾತ್ಸರ್ಪೋ ವಾ ಶತ್ರುರ್ವಾ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪೇಕ್ಷಿತಃ.

ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ದಶರಥೇನಾದ್ಯ ಸಪುತ್ರಾ ತ್ವಂ ತಥಾ ಕೃತಾ৷৷2.7.28৷৷


ಸಪುತ್ರಾ along with your son, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the kng, ದಶರಥೇನ by Dasaratha, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪೇಕ್ಷಿತ: ignored, ಸರ್ಪೋ ವಾ snake or, ಶತ್ರುರ್ವಾ or enemy, ಯಥಾ just like, ಕುರ್ಯಾತ್ would do, ತಥಾ in the same way, ಕೃತಾ has been done.

King Dasaratha has done to you and to your son the same thing as a snake or an
enemy would do when ignored.
ಪಾಪೇನಾನೃತಸಾನ್ತ್ವೇನ ಬಾಲೇ! ನಿತ್ಯಸುಖೋಚಿತೇ.

ರಾಮಂ ಸ್ಥಾಪಯತಾ ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ಸಾನುಬನ್ಧಾ ಹತಾ ಹ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.7.29৷৷


ನಿತ್ಯಸುಖೋಚಿತೇ always accustomed to comfort, ಬಾಲೇ O child! ಅನೃತಸಾನ್ತ್ವೇನ with deceitful words of appeasement, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ಸ್ಥಾಪಯತಾ installing, ಪಾಪೇನ by that vicious one, ಸಾನುಬನ್ಧಾ along with your son, ಹತಾ ಅಸಿಹಿ surely have been ruined.

O senseless lady, you are always accustomed to comfort. With deceitful words of appeasement that vicious one (King Dasaratha) is going to install Rama in the kingdom. You along with your son have been surely ruined.
ಸಾ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಂ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಕುರು ಹಿತಂ ತವ.

ತ್ರಾಯಸ್ವ ಪುತ್ರಮಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಮಾಂ ಚ ವಿಸ್ಮಯದರ್ಶನೇ৷৷2.7.30৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯಿ O Kaikeyi, ಸಾ such you are, ತವ your, ಹಿತಮ್ well-being, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಮ್ appropriate time has come, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಕುರು act, ವಿಸ್ಮಯದರ್ಶನೇ O fool! ಪುತ್ರಮ್ your son, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ yourself, ಮಾಂ ಚ also me, ತ್ರಾಯಸ್ವ save.

O enchanting-eyed Kaikeyi, that appropriate time has come. Act quickly for your own well-being. Save yourself, your son and me too.
ಮನ್ಥಾರಾಯಾ ವಚಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಶಯಾನಾ ಸಾ ಶುಭಾನನಾ.

ಉತ್ತಸ್ಥೌ ಹರ್ಷಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾ ಚನ್ದ್ರಲೇಖೇವ ಶಾರದೀ৷৷2.7.31৷৷


ಶಯಾನಾ lying in her couch, ಸಾ that Kaikeyi, ಶುಭಾನನಾ with a charming countenance, ಮನ್ಥರಾಯಾ: Manthara's, ವಚ: words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಹರ್ಷಸಂಪೂರ್ಣಾ full of joy, ಶಾರದೀ autumnal, ಚನ್ದ್ರಲೇಖೇವ Moon's crescent, ಉತ್ತಸ್ಥೌ rose.

Hearing the words of Manthara, Kaikeyi of charming countenance lying in her couch rose, full of joy, like the autumnal streak of the Moon's crescent.
ಅತೀವ ಸಾ ತು ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ವಿಸ್ಮಯಾನ್ವಿತಾ.

ಏಕಮಾಭರಣಂ ತಸ್ಯೈ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಯೈ ಪ್ರದದೌ ಶುಭಮ್৷৷2.7.32৷৷


ಸಾ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ that Kaikeyi, ಅತೀವ exceedingly, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ pleased, ವಿಸ್ಮಯಾನ್ವಿತಾ filled with astonishment, ತಸ್ಯೈ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಯೈ for that hunckback, ಏಕಮ್ one, ಶುಭಮ್ beautiful, ಆಭರಣಮ್ ornament, ದದೌ gave.

Filled with immense joy and wonder (at the news), Kaikeyi gifted a beauthful ornament to that hunchback.
ದತ್ವಾ ತ್ವಾಭರಣಂ ತಸ್ಯೈ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಯೈ ಪ್ರಮದೋತ್ತಮಾ.

ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಮನ್ಥರಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪುನರೇವಾಬ್ರವೀದಿದಮ್৷৷2.7.33৷৷


ಪ್ರಮದೋತ್ತಮಾ the best among beautiful women, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ತಸ್ಯೈ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಯೈ to that hunchback, ಆಭರಣಮ್ ornament, ದತ್ವಾ looking at, ಮನ್ಥರಾಮ್ Manthara, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪುನ: ಏವ again, ಇದಮ್ these (words), ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Kaikeyi, the best among the beauties, having given the ornament to Manthara, the hunchback, looked at her and said these words again:
ಇದಂ ತು ಮನ್ಥರೇ ಮಹ್ಯಮಾಖ್ಯಾಸಿ ಪರಮಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.

ಏತನ್ಮೇ ಪ್ರಿಯಮಾಖ್ಯಾತುಃ ಕಿಂ ವಾ ಭೂಯಃ ಕರೋಮಿ ತೇ৷৷2.7.34৷৷


ಮನ್ಥರೇ O Manthara!, ಮಹ್ಯಮ್ for me, ಪರಮಮ್ exceedingly, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasant, ಇದಮ್ this (news), ಆಖ್ಯಾಸಿ telling, ಮೇ to me, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasant (news), ಆಖ್ಯಾತು: one who communicates, ಏತತ್ this one is the gift, ತೇ for you, ಭೂಯ: still more, ಕಿಂ ವಾ anything, ಕರೋಮಿ shall I do?

O Manthara!, the news you have brought me is exceedingly pleasant. What more can I do for you? Here is the gift for one who brings good tidings.
ರಾಮೇ ವಾ ಭರತೇ ವಾಹಂ ವಿಶೇಷಂ ನೋಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತುಷ್ಟಾಸ್ಮಿ ಯದ್ರಾಜಾ ರಾಮಂ ರಾಜ್ಯೇಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.7.35৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಮೇ ವಾ either in Rama, ಭರತೇ ವಾ or in Bharata, ವಿಶೇಷಮ್ distinction, ನೋಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ do not see, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ as such, ರಾಜಾ king, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ಯತ್ ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ if installs, ತುಷ್ಟಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ am contented

I do not see any distinction between Rama and Bharata as such. I am contented with Rama's consecration in the kingdom.
ನ ಮೇ ಪರಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಿತಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಪುನಃ

ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಹೇ! ಸುವಚಂ ವಚಃಪರಮ್.

ತಥಾ ಹ್ಯವೋಚಸ್ತ್ವಮತಃ ಪ್ರಿಯೋತ್ತರಂ

ವರಂ ಪರಂ ತೇ ಪ್ರದದಾಮಿ ತಂ ವೃಣು৷৷2.7.36৷৷


ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಹೇ O woman worthy of affection, ಮೇ to me, ಇತ: than this, ಪರಮ್ great, ನ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ nothing, ನ not, ತ್ವಯಾಪಿ by you, ಪರಮ್ exceedingly, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ dear, ವಚ: words, ಸುವಚಮ್ cannot be expressed easily, ನ not, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ತಥಾ thus, ಪ್ರಿಯೋತ್ತರಮ್ best among the dear ones, ಅವೋಚ: ಹಿ have told, ಅತ: now, ಪರಮ್ best, ವರಮ್ reward, ತೇ to you, ಪ್ರದದಾಮಿ shall bestow, ತಮ್ that one, ವೃಣು ask for.

O woman worthy of affection! for me there is nothing greater and dearer than this news. I will grant you another reward better than this. Just ask for it.
