[Bharata meets Kaikeyi --- hears from Kaikeyi about the demise of king Dasaratha and Rama's exile --- Vasistha calls upon Bharata to perform obsequies and get consecrated]

ಅಪಶ್ಯಂಸ್ತು ತತಸ್ತತ್ರ ಪಿತರಂ ಪಿತುರಾಲಯೇ.

ಜಗಾಮ ಭರತೋ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಮಾತರಂ ಮಾತುರಾಲಯೇ৷৷2.72.1৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತತ್ರ there, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಆಲಯೇ abode, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ not seen, ಮಾತುಃ mother's, ಆಲಯೇ in the abode, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಜಗಾಮ went.

Not finding his father in his abode, Bharata went to see his mother in her apartment.
[Crossing many rivers, forests and territories Bharata reaches Ayodhya --- witnesses scenes of dull desolation charged with an atmosphere of apprehensions --- enters the palace dejected]

Glorious and prosperous prince Bharata, the delight of the Ikshvaku race, set out from Rajagriha, took the eastern direction, and observing the course of the river Sudama crossed Hladini and Satadru rivers which were very wide and flowing westwards crested with waves.
ಅನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ತು ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಪ್ರೋಷಿತಂ ಸುತಮ್.

ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಪ್ರೋಷಿತಮ್ sent, ತಂ ಸುತಮ್ that son, ಅನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ who had arrived, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ತದಾ then, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ delighted, ಸೌವರ್ಣಮ್ golden, ಆಸನಮ್ seat, ತ್ವಕ್ತ್ವಾ leaving, ಉತ್ಪಪಾತ sprang up.

On seeing her son, who was sent away, presently arriving, the delighted Kaikeyi sprang up from her golden seat.

he (Bharata), ಐಲಾಧಾನೇ in Eladhana, ನದೀಮ್ river, ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ crossed, ಅಪರಪರ್ಪಟಾನ್ Aparaparpata region, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಚ having reached, ಶಿಲಾಮ್ hill, ಅಕುರ್ವತೀಮ್ originating, ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ having crossed, ಆಗ್ನೇಯಮ್ towards northeast, ಶಲ್ಯಕರ್ಷಣಮ್ Salyakarsna, ಶಿಲಾವಹಾಮ್ Silavaha, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ observing, ಚೈತ್ರರಥಂ ವನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ towards a forest called Chaitraratha, ಮಹಾಶೈಲಾನ್ great mountains, ಅತ್ಯಯಾತ್ went beyond.

Bharata, ever true to his word, handsome and pure-hearted, reached Aparaparpata region and crossed river Satadru at Eladhana, the mountain in which river Silavaha originates. Then he traversed Salyakarsna regions in the northeast, observing the course of the Silavaha and went beyond the great mountains in the direction of the forest called Chaitraratha.

ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ a man of righteous conduct, ಸಃ ಭರತಃ that Bharata, ಶ್ರೀವಿವರ್ಜಿತಮ್ devoid of cheer, ಸ್ವಗೃಹಮ್ his home, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯೈವ on entering, ಜನನ್ಯಾಃ mother's, ಶುಭೌ auspicious, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ clasped.

On entering home the righteous Bharata found it devoid of cheer and touched the auspicious feet of his mother (with reverence).
ಸಾ ತಂ ಮೂರ್ಧನ್ಯುಪಾಘ್ರಾಯ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಮ್.

ಅಙ್ಕೇ ಭರತಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷2.72.4৷৷


ಸಾ she, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಮ್ illustrious, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ on his forehead, ಉಪಾಘ್ರಾಯ having smelt, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ having hugged, ಅಙ್ಕೇ on her lap, ಆರೋಪ್ಯ made him rest, ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to question, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ began.

Kaikeyi, gave her illustrious son Bharata a hug, kissed him on his forehead, made him rest on her lap and began her query.
ಐಲಾಧಾನೇ ನದೀಂ ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಚಾಪರಪರ್ಪಟಾನ್.

ಶಿಲಾಮಕುರ್ವತೀಂ ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ ಆಗ್ನೇಯಂ ಶಲ್ಯಕರ್ಷಣಮ್৷৷2.71.3৷৷

ಆರ್ಯಕವೇಶ್ಮನಃ from your noble grandfather's residence, ಚ್ಯುತಸ್ಯ having left, ತೇ to you, ಅದ್ಯ by now, ಕತಿಚಿತ್ how many, ರಾತ್ರ್ಯ: nights, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ swiftly, ರಥೇನ on chariot, ಆಪತತಃ while moving, ತವ to you, ಅಧ್ವಶ್ರಮಃ weary of journey, ಅಪಿ ನ is not there?

How many nights have you spent (on the way) since you left your noble grandfather's residence? Hasn't the hurried journey (over such a long distance) on the chariot left you exhausted?

ಸರಸ್ವತೀಂ ಚ Saraswati, ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ಚ Ganga, ಯುಗ್ಮೇನ at the confluence, ಪ್ರತಿಪದ್ಯ having arrived, ವೀರಮತ್ಸ್ಯಾನಾಮ್ of Veeramatsya region, ಉತ್ತರಾಮ್ to the north, ಭಾರುಣ್ಡಂ ವನಮ್ forest Bharunda, ಪ್ರಾವಿಶತ್ entered.

Arriving at the confluence of Saraswati and Ganga and traversing the north of Veeramatsya region, he entered the Bharunda forest.
ಆರ್ಯಕಸ್ತೇ ಸುಕುಶಲೀ ಯುಧಾಜಿನ್ಮಾತುಲಸ್ತವ.

ಪ್ರವಾಸಾಚ್ಚ ಸುಖಂ ಪುತ್ರ! ಸರ್ವಂ ಮೇ ವಕ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.72.6৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! son, ತೇ your, ಆರ್ಯಕಃ revered grandfather, ಸುಕುಶಲೀ is he doing well?, ತವ your, ಮಾತುಲಃ maternal uncle, ಯುಧಾಜಿತ್ Yudhajit, ಪ್ರವಾಸಾತ್ the sojourn, ಸುಖಮ್ is it pleasant?, ಮೇ to me, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves you.

My son! are your revered grandfather and your maternal uncle Yudhajit doing well?
Did you have a pleasant time during the sojourn? You should tell me all this.
ವೇಗಿನೀಂ ಚ ಕುಲಿಙ್ಗಾಖ್ಯಾಂ ಹ್ಲಾದಿನೀಂ ಪರ್ವತಾವೃತಾಮ್.

ಯಮುನಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಸನ್ತೀರ್ಣಃ ಬಲಮಾಶ್ವಾಸಯತ್ತದಾ৷৷2.71.6৷৷


ವೇಗಿನೀಮ್ rapidly-flowing, ಪರ್ವತಾವೃತಾಮ್ hill-bound, ಹ್ಲಾದಿನೀಮ್ pleasing to the mind, ಕುಲಿಙ್ಗಾಖ್ಯಾಮ್ known as Kulinga, ಯಮುನಾಮ್ Yamuna, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having arrived, ಸನ್ತೀರ್ಣಃ he crossed, ತದಾ then, ಬಲಮ್ army, ಆಶ್ವಾಸಯತ್ made them rest.

He crossed the swift-flowing river known as Kulinga surrounded by hills and pleasing to the mind. Thereafter on crossing Yamuna he made his army rest on the otherside.
ಏವಂ ಪೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತು ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವನನ್ದನಃ.

ಆಚಷ್ಟ ಭರತ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಮಾತ್ರೇ ರಾಜೀವಲೋಚನಃ৷৷2.72.7৷৷


ರಾಜೀವಲೋಚನಃ lotus-eyed, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವನನ್ದನಃ king's delight, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಏವಮ್ in this manner, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ lovingly, ಪೃಷ್ಟ: having been asked, ಮಾತ್ರೇ to his mother, ಸರ್ವಮ್ every thing, ಆಚಷ್ಟೇ narrated.

Thus asked lovingly by his mother Kaikeyi, the lotus-eyed Bharata, the king's delight narrated everything to her.
ಸಶೀತೀಕೃತ್ಯ ತು ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ ಕ್ಲಾನ್ತಾನಾಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ ವಾಜಿನಃ.

ತತ್ರ ಸ್ನಾತ್ವಾ ಚ ಪೀತ್ವಾ ಚ ಪ್ರಾಯಾದಾದಾಯ ಚೋದಕಮ್৷৷2.71.7৷৷


ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ their limbs, ಶೀತೀಕೃತ್ಯ having cooled, ಕ್ಲಾನ್ತಾನ್ weary, ವಾಜಿನಃ horses, ಆಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ having refreshed, ತತ್ರ there, ಸ್ನಾತ್ವಾ having bathed, ಪೀತ್ವಾ ಚ and drinking, ಉದಕಮ್ water, ಆದಾಯ took, ಪ್ರಾಯಾತ್ set out.

The weary horses rested and cooled their bodies. And they bathed and drank. They set out again refreshed taking with them a store of water.
ಅದ್ಯ ಮೇ ಸಪ್ತಮೀ ರಾತ್ರಿಶ್ಚ್ಯುತಸ್ಯಾರ್ಯಕವೇಶ್ಮನಃ.

ಅಮ್ಬಾಯಾಃ ಕುಶಲೀ ತಾತ ಯುಧಾಜಿನ್ಮಾತುಲಶ್ಚ ಮೇ৷৷2.72.8৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಕವೇಶ್ಮನಃ from noble grandsire's residence, ಚ್ಯುತಸ್ಯ having left, ಮೇ to me, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಸಪ್ತಮೀ seventh, ರಾತ್ರಿಃ night, ಅಮ್ಬಾಯಾಃ mother's, ತಾತಃ father, ಮೇ my, ಮಾತುಲಶ್ಚ maternal uncle, ಯುಧಾಜಿತ್ Yudhajit, ಕುಶಲೀ is keeping well.

This is the seventh night since I left my noble grandsire's residence. My mother's father, king of Kekaya and my maternal uncle Yudhajit are doing well.
ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಮನಭೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೋಪಸೇವಿತಮ್.

ಭದ್ರೋ ಭದ್ರೇಣ ಯಾನೇನ ಮಾರುತಃ ಖಮಿವಾತ್ಯಯಾತ್৷৷2.71.8৷৷


ಭದ್ರಃ the blessed one, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ prince (Bharata), ಅನಭೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೋಪಸೇವಿತಮ್ uninhabited, ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ vast forest, ಭದ್ರೇಣ by an excellent, ಯಾನೇನ on chariot, ಮಾರುತಃ wind-god, ಖಮಿವ like sky, ಅತ್ಯಯಾತ್ passed through.

Then with the blessed prince (Bharata) on an excellent chariot, it (the army) moved through the vast and uninhabited forest like the god of wind passing through the sky.
ಯನ್ಮೇ ಧನಂ ಚ ರತ್ನಂ ಚ ದದೌ ರಾಜಾ ಪರನ್ತಪಃ.

ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಂ ಪಥ್ಯಭವತ್ತತೋಹಂ ಪೂರ್ವಮಾಗತಃ৷৷2.72.9৷৷


ಪರನ್ತಪಃ subduer of enemies, ರಾಜಾ king of Kekaya, ಮೇ to me, ಯತ್ which, ಧನಂ ಚ wealth, ರತ್ನಂ ಚ gems, ದದೌ had given, that one, ಪಥಿ on the way, ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಮ್ ಅಭವತ್ were exhausted, ತತಃ therefore, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ in advance, ಆಗತಃ I came.

The (horses carrying) the wealth including the gems which the king (of Kekaya), the subduer of enemies had bestowed on me were exhausted on the way. Therefore I have come in advance.
ಭಾಗೀರಥೀಂ ದುಷ್ಪ್ರತರಾಮಂಶುಧಾನೇ ಮಹಾನದೀಮ್.

ರಾಘವಃ the descendant of Raghu (Bharata), ವಿಶ್ರುತೇ in the famous, ಪ್ರಾಗ್ವಟೇ Pragvata, ಪುರೇ city, ಅಂಶುಧಾನೇ at a place known as Anshudhana, ದುಷ್ಪ್ರತರಾಮ್ difficult to cross, ಮಹಾನದೀಮ್ mighty river, ಭಾಗೀರಥೀಮ್ Bhagirathi, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ quickly, ಉಪಾಯಾತ್ reached.

Bharata, the descendant of Raghu, knowing that the mighty river Bhagirathi was difficult to cross at a place known as Anshudhana, quickly reached the famous city of Pragvata.
ರಾಜವಾಕ್ಯಹರೈರ್ದೂತೈಸ್ತ್ವರ್ಯಮಾಣೋಹಮಾಗತಃ.

ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಜವಾಕ್ಯಹರೈಃ by those carrying out royal orders, ದೂತೈಃ messengers, ತ್ವರ್ಯಮಾಣಃ have hastened, ಆಗತಃ came, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಯತ್ which one, ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to ask, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ wish, ತತ್ all that, ಅಮ್ಬಾ mother, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಅರ್ಹತಿ behoves you.

ಸಃ he, ಪ್ರಾಗ್ವಟೇ at Pragvata city, ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ river Ganga, ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ having crossed, ಕುಟಿಕೋಷ್ಠಿಕಾಮ್ Kutikoshti river, ಸಮಾಯಾತ್ reached, ಸಃ Bharata, ಸಬಲಃ with his army, ತಾಮ್ that river, ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ having crossed, ಅಥ thereafter, ಧರ್ಮವರ್ಧನಮ್ Dharmavardhana village, ಸಮಾಯಾತ್ reached.

With Ganga at Pragvata city and river Kutikoshtika crossed along with his army, he reached Dharmavardhana village.
ಶೂನ್ಯೋಯಂ ಶಯನೀಯಸ್ತೇ ಪರ್ಯಙ್ಕೋ ಹೇಮಭೂಷಿತಃ.

ನ ಚಾಯಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಜನಃ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಃ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಮಾ৷৷2.72.11৷৷


ಶಯನೀಯಃ a place worthy of resting, ಹೇಮಭೂಷಿತಃ decorated with gold, ಅಯಮ್ this, ತೇ your, ಪರ್ಯಙ್ಕ: couch, ಶೂನ್ಯಃ is empty, ಅಯಮ್ ಚ and this, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಜನಃ attendants of Ikshavaku, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಃ with delight, ಮಾ to me, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ does not appear.

Your gold-bedecked couch, worthy of resting lies empty. None of the attendants of the Ikshvakus look cheerful.
ತೋರಣಂ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾರ್ಧೇನ ಜಮ್ಭೂಪ್ರಸ್ಥಮುಪಾಗಮತ್.

ವರೂಥಂ ಚ ಯಯೌ ರಮ್ಯಂ ಗ್ರಾಮಂ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ৷৷2.71.11৷৷


ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ son of Dasaratha, (Bharata), ತೋರಣಮ್ Torana region, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾರ್ಥೇನ southern direction of, ಜಮ್ಬೂಪ್ರಸ್ಥಮ್ Jambuprastha village, ಉಪಾಗಮತ್ arrived, ವರೂಥಮ್ Varutha village, ರಮ್ಯಂ pleasant, ಗ್ರಾಮಂ ಚ village, ಯಯೌ obtained.

Having traversed the southern end of Torana, the son of Dasaratha (Bharata) reached the beautiful Varutha village via Jambuprastha.
ರಾಜಾ ಭವತಿ ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಮಿಹಾಮ್ಬಾಯಾ ನಿವೇಶನೇ.

ತಮಹಂ ನಾದ್ಯ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛನ್ನಿಹಾಗತಃ৷৷2.72.12৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಮ್ mostly, ಇಹ here, ಅಮ್ಬಾಯಾಃ mother's, ನಿವೇಶನೇ residence, ಭವತಿ stays, ಅದ್ಯ
today, ತಮ him, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ do not see, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಚ್ಛನ್ with a wish, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಃ came.

I had come here with the hope to see king Dasaratha who spends most of his time in my mother's residence. But today I do not see him .
ತತ್ರ ರಮ್ಯೇ ವನೇ ವಾಸಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾಸೌ ಪ್ರಾಙ್ಮುಖೋ ಯಯೌ.

ಉದ್ಯಾನಮುಜ್ಜಿಹಾನಾಯಾಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾ ಯತ್ರ ಪಾದಪಾಃ৷৷2.71.12৷৷


ಅಸೌ he (Bharata), ಅತ್ರ there, ರಮ್ಯೇ charming, ವನೇ forest, ವಾಸಮ್ stay, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ಪ್ರಾಙ್ಮುಖಃ eastwards, ಯತ್ರ where, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಃ known as priyaka, ಪಾದಪಾಃ trees, ಉಜ್ಜಿಹಾನಾಯಾಃ Ujjihana, ಉದ್ಯಾನಮ್ garden, ಯಯೌ reached.

He (Bharata) halted in that charming forest for a while, proceeded eastwards till he reached a place known as Ujjihana garden abounding in spriyaka trees.
ಪಿತುರ್ಗ್ರಹೀಷ್ಯೇ ಚರಣೌ ತಂ ಮಮಾಖ್ಯಾಹಿ ಪೃಚ್ಛತಃ.

ಆಹೋಸ್ವಿದಮ್ಬ! ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಯಾಃ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಯಾ ನಿವೇಶನೇ৷৷2.72.13৷৷


ಅಮ್ಬ O mother, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಚರಣೌ both the feet, ಗ್ರಹೀಷ್ಯೇ I shall hold, ಪೃಚ್ಛತಃ thus asking, ಮಮ to me, ತಮ್ about him, ಆಖ್ಯಾಹಿ you may tell, ಆಹೋಸ್ವಿತ್ perchance, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಯಾಃ the eldest mother's, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಃ Kausalya's, ನಿವೇಶನೇ at her residence.

I would like to pay obeisance at my father's feet. Will you answer my question, O mother, and tell me regarding his whereabouts? Or perchance could he be at the residence of my eldest mother Kausalya?
ಸಾಲಾಂಸ್ತು ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾನ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಶೀಘ್ರಾನಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ವಾಜಿನಃ.

ಅನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯಾಥ ಭರತಃ ವಾಹಿನೀಂ ತ್ವರಿತೋ ಯಯೌ৷৷2.71.13৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಸಾಲಾನ್ sala trees, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾನ್ priyaka trees, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having reached, ಶೀಘ್ರಾನ್ swift-running, ವಾಜಿನಃ horses, ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ having harnessed, ಅಥ thereafter, ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್ forces, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ having commanded, ತ್ವರಿತಃ quickly, ಯಯೌ set out.

After reaching the groves of sala and priyaka trees, Bharata harnessed the swift-running horses to the chariot and ordered his forces to proceed fast.
ತಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಪ್ರಿಯವದ್ಘೋರಮಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.

ಅಜಾನನ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಜಾನನ್ತೀ ರಾಜ್ಯಲೋಭೇನ ಮೋಹಿತಾ৷৷2.72.14৷৷


ಪ್ರಜಾನನ್ತೀ In spite of knowing, ರಾಜ್ಯಲೋಭೇನ due to greed for kingdom, ಮೋಹಿತಾ infatuated, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadful, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ unpleasant news, ಪ್ರಿಯವತ್ as if it was pleasing, ಅಜಾನನ್ತಮ್ ignorant of what had transpired, ತಮ್ him (Bharata), ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ conveyed to him.

In spite of knowing everything, Kaikeyi actuated by greed for the kingdom, broke the unpleasant and dreadful news as if it were pleasing to Bharata, who was ignorant of what had transpired.
ವಾಸಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸರ್ವತೀರ್ಥೇ ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ ಚೋತ್ತಾನಿಕಾಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಅನ್ಯಾ ನದೀಶ್ಚ ವಿವಿಧಾಃ ಪಾರ್ವತೀಯೈಸ್ತುರಙ್ಗಮೈಃ৷৷2.71.14৷৷

That tiger among men, Bharata halted at a place known as Sarvatirtha and crossed the Uttanika and various other rivers with the help of hill-born horses. He crossed the Kutika river on an elephant the river Kapivati at a place known as Lauhitya.
ಯಾ ಗತಿಸ್ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಂ ತಾಂ ಗತಿಂ ತೇ ಪಿತಾ ಗತಃ.

ರಾಜಾ ಮಹತ್ಮಾ ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ ಯಾಯಜೂಕಸ್ಸತಾಂ ಗತಿಃ৷৷2.72.15৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ high-souled one, ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ brilliant one, ಯಾಯಜೂಕಃ ever engaged in
performing sacrifices, ಸತಾಮ್ for virtuous people, ಗತಿಃ refuge, ತೇ ಪಿತಾ your father, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ for all living beings, ಯಾ which, ಗತಿಃ ultimate course, ತಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ that course, ಗತಃ attained.

Your high-souled, brilliant father ever engaged in performing sacrifices and a refuge for the virtuous people, went the inevitable way every living being must follow (attained heaven).
ವಾಸಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸರ್ವತೀರ್ಥೇ ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ ಚೋತ್ತಾನಿಕಾಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಪಪಾತ ಸಹಸಾ ಭೂಮೌ ಪಿತೃಶೋಕಬಲಾರ್ದಿತಃ৷৷2.72.16৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾಭಿಜನವಾನ್ born of the righteous race, ಶುಚಿಃ a man of pure nature, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತತ್ at that, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on hearing, ಪಿತೃಶೋಕಬಲಾರ್ದಿತಃ shattered by the force of grief due to his father's demise, ಸಹಸಾ at once, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಪಪಾತ collapsed.

On hearing these words, he (Bharata), born of a righteous race and endowed with purity of character was shattered by the immense grief of his father's demise and dropped down instantaneously on the floor.
ಏಕಸಾಲೇ ಸ್ಥಾಣುಮತೀಂ ವಿನತೇ ಗೋಮತೀಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಕಲಿಙ್ಗನಗರೇ ಚಾಪಿ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಸಾಲವನಂ ತದಾ৷৷2.71.16৷৷

ಭರತಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾಗಚ್ಛತ್ಸುಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತವಾಹನಃ.


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಏಕಸಾಲೇ at Ekasala village, ಸ್ಥಾಣುಮತೀಮ್ Sthanumati river, ವಿನತೇ at Vinata village, ಗೋಮತೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ Gomati river, ಸುಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತವಾಹನಃ with extremely fatigued horses, ತದಾ then, ಕಲಿಙ್ಗನಗರೇ ಚಾಪಿ at Kalinganagara, ಸಾಲವನಮ್ sala forest, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having reached, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಆಗಚ್ಛತ್ came.

Bharata crossed the rivers Sthanumati at Ekasala and Gomati at Vinata villages. Thereafter as his horses were extremely tired he rested for a while in the sala forest in Kalinganagara before he speedily set out (again).
ಹಾ ಹತೋಸ್ಮೀತಿ ಕೃಪಣಾಂ ದೀನಾಂ ವಾಚಮುದೀರಯನ್.

ನಿಪಪಾತ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುರ್ಬಾಹೂ ವಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್৷৷2.72.17৷৷


ಮಹಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed one, ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ valiant, ಹಾ ಹತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ Alas! I am finished, ಇತಿ thus, ಕೃಪಣಾಮ್ evoking compassion, ದೀನಾಮ್ pitiable, ವಾಚಮ್ words, ಉದೀರಯನ್ uttering, ಬಾಹೂ arms, ವಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ having lifted, ನಿಪಪಾತ fell down.

The mighty-armed, valiant Bharata, uttering pitiable words, evoking compassion. Alas, I am finished fell down at once throwing up his arms.
ವನಂ ಚ ಸಮತೀತ್ಯಾಶುಶರ್ವರ್ಯಾಮರುಣೋದಯೇ৷৷2.71.17৷৷

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಮನುನಾ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ನಿರ್ಮಿತಾಂ ಸನ್ದದರ್ಶ ಹ.


ಆಶು quickly, ಶರ್ವರ್ಯಾಮ್ in the night, ವನಂ ಚ forest also, ಸಮತೀತ್ಯ having passed through, ಅರುಣೋದಯೇ at sunrise, ಮನುನಾ ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by king Manu, ನಿರ್ಮಿತಾಮ್ built, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ಸನ್ದದರ್ಶ ಹ saw.

He passed quickly through the forest at night and at sunrise beheld the city of Ayodhya built by king Manu.
ತತಶ್ಶೋಕೇನ ಸಂವೀತಃ ಪಿತುರ್ಮರಣದುಃಖಿತಃ.

ವಿಲಲಾಪ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಾಕುಲಿತಚೇತನಃ৷৷2.72.18৷৷


ತತಃ after that, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ radiant Bharata, ಶೋಕೇನ by grief, ಸಂವೀತಃ overwhelmed, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಮರಣ ದುಃಖಿತಃ sorrowing over death, ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಾಕುಲಿತಚೇತನಃ his mind afflicted with delusion, ವಿಲಲಾಪ lamented.

Overwhelmed with grief, radiant Bharata reeling with delusion due to sorrow, lamented over the death of his father.
ತಾಂ ಪುರೀಂ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಸ್ಸಪ್ತರಾತ್ರೋಷಿತಃ ಪಥಿ৷৷2.71.18৷৷

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮಗ್ರತೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸಾರಥಿಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.


ಪಥಿ on the way, ಸಪ್ತರಾತ್ರೋಷಿತಃ spent seven nights, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ tiger among men, ಅಗ್ರತಃ before him, ತಾಮ್ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಪುರೀಮ್ that Ayodhya city, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸಾರಥಿಮ್ to the charioteer, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Having spent seven nights on his way, that tiger among men (Bharata) saw Ayodhaya before him. He said to the charioteer:
ಏಷಾ ನಾತಿಪ್ರತೀತಾ ಮೇ ಪುಣ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನಾ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ৷৷2.71.19৷৷

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ ದೂರಾತ್ಸಾರಥೇ ಪಾಣ್ಡುಮೃತ್ತಿಕಾ.

ಯಜ್ವಭಿರ್ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನೈರ್ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೈರ್ವೇದಪಾರಗೈಃ৷৷2.71.20৷৷

ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಮೃದ್ಧೈರಾಕೀರ್ಣಾ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಾ.


ಸಾರಥೇ O charioteer!, ಪುಣ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನಾ a city of sacred gardens, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ of great renown,
ಪಾಣ್ಡುಮೃತ್ತಿಕಾ with white clay, ಯಜ್ವಭಿಃ those who perform sacrifices, ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನೈಃ by the virtuous, ವೇದಪಾರಗೈಃ by those well versed in the vedas, ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಮ್ in abundance , ಋದ್ಧೈಃ by the wealthy, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೈಃ by brahmins, ಆಕೀರ್ಣಾ filled with, ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಾ ruled by rajarsis, ಏಷಾ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ such Ayodhya, ಮೇ to me, ನಾತಿಪ್ರತೀತಾ not so clearly, ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ is seen.

O charioteer! I am able to see Ayodhya of great renown from a distance but not so clearly that white-clay-city of Ayodhya, with its sacred gardens ruled by several rajarsis, inhabited by numerous wealthy people, by virtuous brahmins and priests who perform sacrifices and who are well-versed in the Vedas.
ಏತತ್ಸುರುಚಿರಂ ಭಾತಿ ಪಿತುರ್ಮೇ ಶಯನಂ ಪುರಾ.

ಶಶಿನೇವಾಮಲಂ ರಾತ್ರೌ ಗಗನಂ ತೋಯದಾತ್ಯಯೇ৷৷2.72.19৷৷


ಮೇ ಪಿತುಃ my father's, ಏತತ್ this, ಸುರುಚಿರಮ್ lovely, ಶಯನಮ್ couch, ಪುರಾ formerly, ತೋಯದಾತ್ಯಯೇ at the end of the rainy season, ರಾತ್ರೌ in the night, ಅಮಲಮ್ spotless, ಗಗನಮ್ sky, ಶಶಿನೇವ as though by the Moon, ಭಾತಿ ಸ್ಮ used to radiate.

This couch of my father once used to shine like the spotless night sky irradiated by the autumnal Moon.
ತದಿದಂ ನ ವಿಭಾತ್ಯದ್ಯ ವಿಹೀನಂ ತೇನ ಧೀಮತಾ.

ವ್ಯೋಮೇವ ಶಶಿನಾ ಹೀನಮಪ್ಚ್ಛುಷ್ಕ ಇವ ಸಾಗರಃ৷৷2.72.20৷৷


ಧೀಮತಾ sagacious, ತೇನ by him, ವಿಹೀನಮ್ deprived of, ತತ್ ಇದಮ್ that this couch, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಶಶಿನಾ by the Moon, ಹೀನಮ್ devoid of, ವ್ಯೋಮೇವ like sky, ಅಪ್ಚ್ಛುಷ್ಕಃ dried up by evaporation of water, ಸಾಗರಃ ಇವ like the sea, ನ ವಿಭಾತಿ is not shining.

But today this couch without my sagacious father no longer shines like the sky without the Moon or like the sea evaporated.
ಏಷಾ ನಾತಿಪ್ರತೀತಾ ಮೇ ಪುಣ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನಾ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ৷৷2.71.19৷৷

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ ದೂರಾತ್ಸಾರಥೇ ಪಾಣ್ಡುಮೃತ್ತಿಕಾ.

ಯಜ್ವಭಿರ್ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನೈರ್ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೈರ್ವೇದಪಾರಗೈಃ৷৷2.71.20৷৷

ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಮೃದ್ಧೈರಾಕೀರ್ಣಾ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಾ.


ಸಾರಥೇ O charioteer!, ಪುಣ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನಾ a city of sacred gardens, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ of great renown,
ಪಾಣ್ಡುಮೃತ್ತಿಕಾ with white clay, ಯಜ್ವಭಿಃ those who perform sacrifices, ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನೈಃ by the virtuous, ವೇದಪಾರಗೈಃ by those well versed in the vedas, ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಮ್ in abundance , ಋದ್ಧೈಃ by the wealthy, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೈಃ by brahmins, ಆಕೀರ್ಣಾ filled with, ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಪರಿಪಾಲಿತಾ ruled by rajarsis, ಏಷಾ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ such Ayodhya, ಮೇ to me, ನಾತಿಪ್ರತೀತಾ not so clearly, ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ is seen.

O charioteer! I am able to see Ayodhya of great renown from a distance but not so clearly that white-clay-city of Ayodhya, with its sacred gardens ruled by several rajarsis, inhabited by numerous wealthy people, by virtuous brahmins and priests who perform sacrifices and who are well-versed in the Vedas.
ಬಾಷ್ಪಮುತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ್ ಕಣ್ಠೇನ ಸ್ವಾತ್ಮನಾ ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಃ.

ಆಚ್ಛಾದ್ಯ ವದನಂ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ವಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಜಯತಾಂ ವರಃ৷৷2.72.21৷৷


ಜಯತಾಮ್ among the victorious, ವರಃ the foremost, ಕಣ್ಠೇನ with throat, ಬಾಷ್ಪಮ್ tears, ಉತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ having released, ವಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ with raiment, ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ auspicious, ವದನಮ್ countenance, ಆಚ್ಛಾದ್ಯ
having covered, ಸ್ವಾತ್ಮನಾ at his heart, ಪರಮಪೀಡಿತಃ was profoundly distressed.

Bharata, the foremost among the victorious, clearing his tear-choked throat and covering his auspicious countenance with raiment, wept in profound distress with tears overflowing.
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಪುರಾ ಶಬ್ದಶ್ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ತುಮುಲೋ ಮಹಾನ್৷৷2.71.21৷৷

ಸಮನ್ತಾನ್ನರನಾರೀಣಾಂ ತಮದ್ಯ ನ ಶ್ರುಣೋಮ್ಯಹಮ್.


ಪುರಾ earlier, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ನರನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ men and women, ಮಹಾನ್ great, ತುಮುಲಃ tumultous, ಶಬ್ದಃ sound, ಸಮನ್ತಾತ್ all over, ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ would hear, ಅದ್ಯ now, ತಮ್ that sound, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ಶ್ರುಣೋಮಿ not hear.

I do not hear now, in Ayodhya the tumultous noise of men and women I used to hear earlier all over.
ತಮಾರ್ತಂ ದೇವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪತಿತಂ ಭುವಿ.

ನಿಕೃತ್ತಮಿವ ಸಾಲಸ್ಯ ಸ್ಕನ್ಧಂ ಪರಶುನಾ ವನೇ৷৷2.72.22৷৷

ಮತ್ತಮಾತಙ್ಗಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಾರ್ಕಸದೃಶಂ ಭುವಃ.

ಉತ್ಥಾಪಯಿತ್ವಾ ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಂ ವಚನಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.72.23৷৷


ಆರ್ತಮ್ anguished, ದೇವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ resembling gods, ವನೇ in the forest, ಪರಶುನಾ by an axe, ನಿಕೃತ್ತಮ್ severed, ಸಾಲಸ್ಯ sala tree's, ಸ್ಕನ್ಧಮಿವ like a trunk, ಸುತಮ್ son, ಭುವಿ ಪತಿತಮ್ fallen on the ground, ಮತ್ತಮಾತಙ್ಗಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ like a mighty elephant, ಚನ್ದ್ರಾರ್ಕಸದೃಶಮ್ similar to the Sun and the Moon, ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಮ್ tormented by grief, ತಮ್ to him (Bharata), ಭುವಃ from the ground, ಉತ್ಥಾಪಯಿತ್ವಾ having lifted him up, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಂ ಚ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Anguished and grief-stricken, he who resembled the gods, fell down on the ground like a trunk of the sala tree in the forest severed by an axe. Seeing her son who was like a mighty elephant or like the Sun or the Moon, Kaikeyi lifted him up from the ground and spoke these words:
ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ ಹಿ ಸಾಯಾಹ್ನೇ ಕ್ರೀಡಿತ್ವೋಪರತೈರ್ನರೈಃ৷৷2.71.22৷৷

ಸಮನ್ತಾತ್ಪರಿಧಾವದ್ಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ ಮಮಾನ್ಯಥಾ.


ಸಾಯಾಹ್ನೇ early in the morning, ಕ್ರೀಡಿತ್ವಾ sporting, ಉಪರತೈಃ free from desire, ಸಮನ್ತಾತ್ all over, ಪರಿಧಾವದ್ಭಿಃ strolling, ನರೈಃ people, ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ parks, ಮಮ I, ಅನ್ಯಥಾ no one, ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ ಹಿ looking bright.

I do not see people who with passion used to stroll in the parks early in the morning. I see no cheerfulness in any one.
ತಮಾರ್ತಂ ದೇವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪತಿತಂ ಭುವಿ.

ನಿಕೃತ್ತಮಿವ ಸಾಲಸ್ಯ ಸ್ಕನ್ಧಂ ಪರಶುನಾ ವನೇ৷৷2.72.22৷৷

ಮತ್ತಮಾತಙ್ಗಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಾರ್ಕಸದೃಶಂ ಭುವಃ.

ಉತ್ಥಾಪಯಿತ್ವಾ ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಂ ವಚನಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.72.23৷৷

ಕಾಮಿಭಿಃ people full of passion, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಾನಿ abandoned, ತಾನಿ that, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಅನುರುದನ್ತೀವ as if weeping, ಸಾರಥೇ O charioteer, ಪುರೀ city, ಅರಣ್ಯಭೂತೇವ like a forest, ಮೇ to me, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ it appears.

O charioteer, people full of passion have abandoned the gardens. To me, the city looks like a forest as if weeping.
ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠೋತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಕಿಂ ಶೇಷೇ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ! ಮಹಾಯಶಃ.

ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಾ ನಹಿ ಶೋಚನ್ತಿ ಸನ್ತ ಸ್ಸದಸಿ ಸಮ್ಮತಾಃ৷৷2.72.24৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಃ illustrious one, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ! prince, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ arise, arise, ಕಿಂ ಶೇಷೇ why are you lying down, ಸದಸಿ in the assembly, ಸಮ್ಮತಾಃ worthy of honour, ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಾಃ like you, ಸನ್ತಃ learned people, ನ ಶೋಚನ್ತಿ ಹಿ ought not to grieve.

O illustrious prince! arise, arise. Why are you lying down on the floor? Learned people like you, who are worthy of honour in the assembly ought not to grieve like this.
ನ ಹ್ಯತ್ರ ಯಾನೈರ್ದೃಶ್ಯನ್ತೇ ನ ಗಜೈರ್ನ ಚ ವಾಜಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.71.24৷৷

ನಿರ್ಯಾನ್ತೋ ವಾಭಿಯಾನ್ತೋ ವಾ ನರಮುಖ್ಯಾ ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್.


ಅತ್ರ here, ನರಮುಖ್ಯಾಃ important people, ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್ as in the past, ಯಾನೈಃ riding, ನಿರ್ಯಾನ್ತೋ ವಾ people going (out of city), ಅಭಿಯಾನ್ತೋ ವಾ or coming in, ನ ದೃಶ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಹಿ not seen, ಗಜೈಃ elephants, ನ not, ವಾಜಿಭಿಃ ಚ horses also, ನ not.

Important people mounted on elephants or horses are not seen going out of the city or coming in.
ದಾನಯಜ್ಞಾಧಿಕಾರಾ ಹಿ ಶೀಲಶ್ರುತಿವಚೋನುಗಾ.

ಬುದ್ಧಿಸ್ತೇ ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನ! ಪ್ರಭೇವಾರ್ಕಸ್ಯ ಮನ್ದಿರೇ৷৷2.72.25৷৷


ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನ! intelligent, ತೇ your, ಬುದ್ಧಿಃ wisdom, ಶೀಲಶ್ರುತಿವಚೋನುಗಾ ever following virtuous conduct and scriptures, ದಾನಯಜ್ಞಾಧಿಕಾರಾ entitled to dispense charity and perform
sacrifices, ಅರ್ಕಸ್ಯ Sun's, ಮನ್ದಿರೇ in the house, ಪ್ರಭೇವ like light, (will always shine).

O highly intelligent one, by your wisdom, virtuous conduct and scriptural knowledge you are entitled to dispense charity and perform sacrifices. You will always shine incessantly like light of the Sun.
ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ ಪುರಾ ಭಾನ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತಪ್ರಮುದಿತಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.71.25৷৷

ಜನಾನಾಂ ರತಿಸಂಯೋಗೇಷ್ವತ್ಯನ್ತಗುಣವನ್ತಿ ಚ.


ಪುರಾ earlier, ಉದ್ಯಾನಾನಿ gardens, ಮತ್ತಪ್ರಮುದಿತಾನಿ ಚ very melodiously singing, ಜನಾನಾಮ್ for people, ರತಿಸಂಯೋಗೇಷು lovers for their pleasures, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತಗುಣವನ್ತಿ ಚ very appropriate, ಭಾನ್ತಿ would be.

Earlier the gardens used to reverberate with passionate songs of birds--places appropriate for lovers seeking pleasures.
ಸ ರುದಿತ್ವಾ ಚಿರಂ ಕಾಲಂ ಭೂಮೌ ವಿಪರಿವೃತ್ಯ ಚ.

ಜನನೀಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚೇದಂ ಶೋಕೈರ್ಬಹುಭಿರಾವೃತಃ৷৷2.72.26৷৷


ಸಃ he (Bharata), ಬಹುಭಿಃ in many ways, ಶೋಕೈಃ with sorrow, ಆವೃತಃ engulfed by, ಚಿರಂ ಕಾಲಮ್ for a long time, ರುದಿತ್ವಾ having wept, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ವಿಪರಿವೃತ್ಯ ಚ and rolled, ಜನನೀಮ್ to his mother, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

Bharata engulfed in profuse sorrow wept for a long time rolling on the ground and then said these words in reply to his mother:
ತಾನ್ಯೇತಾನ್ಯದ್ಯ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾನಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷2.71.26৷৷

ಸ್ರಸ್ತಪರ್ಣೈರನುಪಥಂ ವಿಕ್ರೋಶದ್ಭಿರಿವ ದ್ರುಮೈಃ.


ಅದ್ಯ now, ಅನುಪಥಮ್ footpath, ಸ್ರಸ್ತಪರ್ಣೈಃ dry leaves, ವಿಕ್ರೋಶದ್ಭಿರಿವ as if crying, ದ್ರುಮೈಃ trees,
ತಾನ್ಯೇತಾನಿ such (gardens), ಸರ್ವಶಃ all over, ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾನಿ cheerless, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ see.

Now the trees appear cheerless, the paths are full of dry leaves fallen all over. It appears as if the trees are crying.
ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ ರಾಮಂ ನು ರಾಜಾ ಯಜ್ಞಂ ನು ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ.

ಇತ್ಯಹಂ ಕೃತಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪೋ ಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ಯಾತ್ರಾಮಯಾಸಿಷಮ್৷৷2.72.27৷৷


ರಾಜಾ king, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ ನು about to consecrate, ಯಜ್ಞಮ್ sacrifice, ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ ನು or will perform indeed, ಇತಿ thinking, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕೃತಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಃ with these thoughts, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ delighted, ಯಾತ್ರಾಮ್ journey, ಅಯಾಸಿಷಮ್ had undertaken.

Thinking that the king is about to consecrate Rama or perform some sacrifice, I undertook the journey in great delight.
ನಾದ್ಯಾಪಿ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಶಬ್ದಃ ಮತ್ತಾನಾಂ ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್৷৷2.71.27৷৷

ಸಂರಕ್ತಾಂ ಮಧುರಾಂ ವಾಣೀಂ ಕಲಂ ವ್ಯಾಹರತಾಂ ಬಹು.


ಸಂರಕ್ತಾಮ್ in the red tincture (of the rising Sun), ಮಧುರಾಮ್ melodious, ವಾಣೀಮ್ voices, ಬಹು many, ಕಲಮ್ sweet sound, ವ್ಯಾಹರತಾಮ್ freely singing and moving, ಮತ್ತಾನಾಮ್ proud, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್
animals and birds, ಶಬ್ದಃ sound, ಅದ್ಯಾಪಿ now, ನ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ not hearing.

I do not hear in the red tincture of the rising Sun the melodious voices of the freely moving animals and birds.
ತದಿದಂ ಹ್ಯನ್ಯಥಾ ಭೂತಂ ವ್ಯವದೀರ್ಣಂ ಮನೋ ಮಮ.

ಪಿತರಂ ಯೋ ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತೇ ರತಮ್৷৷2.72.28৷৷


ತತ್ ಇದಮ್ all this, ಅನ್ಯಥಾ differently, ಭೂತಮ್ has happened, ಯಃ such me, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತೇ my welfare and happiness, ರತಮ್ intent on, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I do not behold, ಮಮ my, ಮನಃ mind, ವ್ಯವದೀರ್ಣಮ್ is shattered.

Now everything has turned out to be different. My mind is shattered.I no longer behold my father who is ever intent on my welfare and happiness.
ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುಸಮ್ಪೃಕ್ತೋ ಧೂಪಸಮ್ಮೂರ್ಛಿತೋತುಲಃ৷৷2.71.28৷৷

ಪ್ರವಾತಿ ಪವನ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ಕಿನ್ನುನಾದ್ಯ ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್.


ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುಸಮ್ಪೃಕ್ತಃ fragrance of sandal and incense, ಧೂಪಸಮ್ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ smell wafting through the smoke, ಅತುಲಃ incomparable, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ಪವನಃ wind, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್ in the city always, ಕಿಂ ನು why is it not, ನ ಪ್ರವಾತಿ not blowing?

Why is it that the incomparable fragrance of sandal and incense that used to fill the nostrils, not blowing now in the prosperous city of Ayodhya?
ಅಮ್ಬ! ಕೇನಾತ್ಯಗಾದ್ರಾಜಾ ವ್ಯಾಘಿನಾ ಮಯ್ಯನಾಗತೇ.

ಧನ್ಯಾ ರಾಮಾದಯಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಯೈಃ ಪಿತಾ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸ್ಸ್ವಯಮ್৷৷2.72.29৷৷


ಅಮ್ಬ! O mother, ರಾಜಾ king, ಮಯಿ my, ಅನಾಗತೇ even before I could return, ಕೇನ ವ್ಯಾಧಿನಾ by what ailment, ಅತ್ಯಗಾತ್ passed away, ಯೈಃ by Rama and others, ಪಿತಾ father, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ personally, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಃ has been offered last rites, such, ರಾಮಾದಯಃ Rama and others, ಧನ್ಯಾಃ are fortunate.

O mother! what ailment caused the king's death before I could return? How fortunate are Rama and others by whom the last rites of my father were performed !
ಭೇರೀಮೃದಙ್ಗವೀಣಾನಾಂ ಕೋಣಸಙ್ಘಟ್ಟಿತಃ ಪುನಃ৷৷2.71.29৷৷

ಕಿಮದ್ಯ ಶಬ್ದೋ ವಿರತಸ್ಸದಾ ದೀನಗತಿಃ ಪುರಾ.


ಪುರಾ earlier, ದೀನಗತಿಃ melancholy, ಪುನಃ again, ಕೋಣಸಙ್ಘಟ್ಟಿತಃ sounds of musical instruments, ಭೇರೀಮೃದಙ್ಗವೀಣಾನಾಮ್ of the trumpets, mrudangas and veena, ಶಬ್ದಃ sound, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಕಿಮ್ why, ವಿರತಃ not heard.

Why is it that the sounds of musical instruments like mrudangas and veenas are not heard now? Why is the city filled with melancholy?
ನ ನೂನಂ ಮಾಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಜಾನಾತಿ ಕೀರ್ತಿಮಾನ್.

ಉಪಜಿಘ್ರೇದ್ಧಿ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ ತಾತ ಸ್ಸನ್ನಮ್ಯ ಸತ್ವರಮ್৷৷2,72.30৷৷


ಕೀರ್ತಿಮಾನ್ illustrious, ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ great king, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ reaching this place, ನ ಜಾನಾತಿ does not know, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ತಾತಃ father, ಸತ್ವರಮ್ quickly, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಸನ್ನಮ್ಯ bending, ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ on the fore head, ಉಪಜಿಘ್ರೇತ್ ಹಿ would have smelt indeed( kissed).

Surely the illustrious maharaja is not aware of my arrival. Otherwise he would have quickly bent my head and kissed me on my forehead.
ಅನಿಷ್ಟಾನಿ ಚ ಪಾಪಾನಿ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.71.30৷৷

ನಿಮಿತ್ತಾನ್ಯಮನೋಜ್ಞಾನಿತೇನ ಸೀದತಿ ಮೇ ಮನಃ.


ಅನಿಷ್ಟಾನಿ inauspicious symptoms, ಚ also, ಪಾಪಾನಿ sinful sights, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ see, ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ various ನಿಮಿತ್ತಾನಿ passing, ಅಮನೋಜ್ಞಾನಿ ugly, ತೇನ hence, ಸೀದತಿ filled with grief, ಮೇ my ಮನಃ mind.

Since I see many passing, inauspicious, sinful, ugly sights, my mind shrinks.
ಕ್ವ ಸ ಪಾಣಿಸ್ಸುಖಸ್ಪರ್ಶಸ್ತಾತಸ್ಯಾಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಃ.

ಯೇನ ಮಾಂ ರಜಸಾ ಧ್ವಸ್ತಮಭೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಂ ಪರಿಮಾರ್ಜತಿ৷৷2.72.31৷৷


ರಜಸಾ with dust, ಧ್ವಸ್ತಮ್ covered, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಯೇನ by which (hand), ಅಭೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮ್ repeatedly, ಪರಿಮಾರ್ಜತಿ used to wipe away, ಅಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಃ of tireless actions, ತಾತಸ್ಯ father's, ಸುಖಸ್ಪರ್ಶಃ having pleasant touch, ಸಃ ಪಾಣಿಃ that hand, ಕ್ವ where is it?

Where is that hand of my father of unwearied actions, the hand that would wipe away
the dust from my person with a pleasant touch?
ಸರ್ವಥಾ ಕುಶಲಂ ಸೂತ! ದುರ್ಲಭಂ ಮಮ ಬನ್ದುಷು৷৷2.71.31৷৷

ತಥಾಹ್ಯಸತಿ ಸಮ್ಮೋಹೇ ಹೃದಯಂ ಸೀದತೀವ ಮೇ.


ಸೂತ! charioteer, ಸರ್ವಥಾ all over, ಮಮ to me, ಬನ್ಧುಷು relations, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ದುರ್ಲಭಮ್ not seem to be true, ತಥಾಹಿ therefore, ಸಮ್ಮೋಹೇ deluded, ಅಸತಿ it is, ಮೇ my, ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ಸೀದತೀವ filled with grief.

I do not see anywhere, O charioteer the well-being, of my kinsmen. Hence I feel deluded and my heart is filled with grief.
ಯೋ ಮೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಪಿತಾ ಬನ್ಧುರ್ಯಸ್ಯ ದಾಸೋಸ್ಮಿ ಧೀಮತಃ.

ತಸ್ಯ ಮಾಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಮಾಖ್ಯಾಹಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಃ৷৷2.72.32৷৷


ಯಃ who, ಮೇ to me, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಪಿತಾ father, ಬನ್ಧುಃ relative, ಧೀಮತಃ wise, ಯಸ್ಯ whose, ದಾಸಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am a slave (of that wise man), ತಸ್ಯ such, ಅಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಃ of a man of unwearied actions, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ to Rama, ಮಾಮ್ about me, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ at once, ಆಖ್ಯಾಹಿ announce.

Announce at once my arrival to the wise Rama, the man of unwearied actions, my brother, father and friend whose slave I am.
ವಿಷಣ್ಣ ಶ್ಶ್ರಾನ್ತಹೃದಯಸ್ತ್ರಸ್ತ ಸ್ಸುಲುಲಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.71.32৷৷

ಭರತಃ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶಾಶು ಪುರೀಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಪಾಲಿತಾಮ್.


ವಿಷಣ್ಣಃ dejected, ಶ್ರಾನ್ತಹೃದಯಃ with depressed heart, ತ್ರಸ್ತಃ fearful man, ಸುಲುಲಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ losing control over his senses, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಆಶು quickly, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಪಾಲಿತಾಮ್ ruled by the Ikshvakus, ಪುರೀಮ್ city of Ayodhya, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.

Dejected and depressed at heart, with no control over his senses and his mind full of apprehension, Bharata swiftly entered the city of Ayodhya ruled by the Ikshvakus.
ಪಿತಾ ಹಿ ಭವತಿ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೋ ಧರ್ಮಮಾರ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಜಾನತಃ.

ತಸ್ಯ ಪಾದೌ ಗ್ರಹೀಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸ ಹೀದಾನೀಂ ಗತಿರ್ಮಮ৷৷2.72.33৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಮ್ the ways of righteousness, ಜಾನತಃ one who knows, ಆರ್ಯಸ್ಯ of the noble person, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಃ eldest brother, ಪಿತಾ ಭವತಿ ಹಿ becomes father, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಗ್ರಹೀಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall hold, ಸ: he, ಇದಾನೀಮ್ now, ಮಮ my, ಗತಿಃ ಹಿ is a refuge indeed.

To one who knows the ways of righteouness the elder brother is (like) the father. Indeed, he (Rama) is my refuge and I shall hold his feet now.
ದ್ವಾರೇಣ ವೈಜಯನ್ತೇನ ಪ್ರಾವಿಶಚ್ಛ್ರಾನ್ತವಾಹನಃ৷৷2.71.33৷৷

ದ್ವಾಸ್ಸ್ಥೈರುತ್ಥಾಯ ವಿಜಯಂ ಪೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತೈ ಸ್ಸಹಿತೋ ಯಯೌ.


ಶ್ರಾನ್ತವಾಹನಃ with his horses exhausted, ವೈಜಯನ್ತೇನ known as Vaijayanta, ದ್ವಾರೇಣ through gate of, ಪ್ರಾವಿಶತ್ entered, ದ್ವಾಃಸ್ಥೈಃ by gate keepers, ಉತ್ಥಾಯ having stood up, ವಿಜಯಮ್ victory, ಪೃಷ್ಟಃ having been uttered, ತೈಃ ಸಹಿತಃ along with them, ಯಯೌ went.

He entered the city through the gate known as Vaijayanta with his horses exhausted. The door-keepers stood up and amidst cries of victory followed him in.
ಧರ್ಮವಿದ್ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೋ ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ.

ಆರ್ಯಃ ಕಿಮಬ್ರವೀದ್ರಾಜಾ ಪಿತಾ ಮೇ ಸತ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಃ৷৷2.72.34৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ conversant with virtuous conduct, ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಶ್ಚ one who always coducts himself in a righteous manner, ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧ: fixed upon truth, ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ firm in vows, ಸತ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಃ one whose strength is truth, ಆರ್ಯಃ venerable one, ರಾಜಾ king, ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ my father, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ did he say (at the time of his death)?

What did my father, the noble king, conversant with righteous conduct, true, to his vows, one who always conducted himself in a righteous manner, whose truth was his
prowess (at the time of his death)?
ಸ ತ್ವನೇಕಾಗ್ರಹೃದಯೋ ದ್ವಾಸ್ಸ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯರ್ಚ್ಯ ತಂ ಜನಮ್৷৷2.71.34৷৷

ಸೂತಮಶ್ವಪತೇಃ ಕ್ಲಾನ್ತಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ತತ್ರ ರಾಘವಃ.


ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ ತು as for the descendant of Raghus, ಅನೇಕಾಗ್ರಹೃದಯಃ with a bewildered mind, ದ್ವಾಸ್ಸ್ಥಮ್ to the gatekeepers, ತಮ್ those, ಜನಮ್ people, ಪ್ರತ್ಯರ್ಚ್ಯ greeting in turn ತತ್ರ there, ಅಶ್ವಪತೇಃ to Ashwapati, ಕ್ಲಾನ್ತಮ್ exhausted, ಸೂತಮ್ to the charioteer, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Bewildered, that descendant of Raghu (Bharata), reciprocated the greetings of the gate-keepers and then addressed the exhausted charioteer, Ashwapati:
ಕಿಮಹಂ ತ್ವರಯಾನೀತಃ ಕಾರಣೇನ ವಿನಾನಘ৷৷2.71.35৷৷

ಅಶುಭಾಶಙ್ಕಿ ಹೃದಯಂ ಶೀಲಂ ಚ ಪತತೀವ ಮೇ.


ಅನಘ O irreproachable one, ಅಹಮ್ I am, ಕಾರಣೇನ ವಿನಾ without any reason, ತ್ವರಯಾ in haste, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಆನೀತಃ was brought, ಹೃದಯಮ್ my heart, ಅಶುಭಾಶಙ್ಕಿ apprehends something inauspcious, ಮೇ my, ಶೀಲಂ ಚ disposition, ಪತತೀವ is lost.

O irreproachable one, why was I brought here in haste without any reason? My mind apprehends something inauspicious. I feel indisposed.
ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಂ ಸಾಧು ಸನ್ದೇಶಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಶ್ರೋತುಮಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಇತಿ ಪೃಷ್ಟಾ ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.72.35৷৷


ಆತ್ಮನಃ relating to me, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಮ್ last, ಸನ್ದೇಶಮ್ message, ಸಾಧು exactly, ಶ್ರೋತುಮ್ to listen, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ wish, ಇತಿ thus, ಪೃಷ್ಟಾ questioned, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಯಥಾ ತತ್ತ್ವಮ್ as actually happened, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

I want to hear the exact words of my father's last message to me. Thus questioned (by Bharata), Kaikeyi related the exact facts:
ರಾಮೇತಿ ರಾಜಾ ವಿಲಪನ್ ಹಾ ಸೀತೇ! ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇತಿ ಚ.

ಸ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಪರಂ ಲೋಕಂ ಗತೋ ಗತಿಮತಾಂ ವರಃ৷৷2.72.36৷৷


ಗತಿಮತಾಮ್ among those who attained the excellent state, ವರಃ the foremost, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ magnanimous, ಸಃ that, ರಾಜಾ king, ರಾಮೇತಿ O Rama, ಹಾ ಸೀತೇ! O Sita, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇತಿ ಚ O Lakshmana also, ವಿಲಪನ್ lamenting, ಪರಂ ಲೋಕಮ್ to the other world, ಗತಃ went.

The magnanimous king, the foremost of those who attained the excellent state after, death, went to the other world, lamenting 'O Rama, O Sita, O Lakshamana!'.
ಶ್ರುತಾ ನೋ ಯಾದೃಶಾಃ ಪೂರ್ವಂ ನೃಪತೀನಾಂ ವಿನಾಶನೇ৷৷2.71.36৷৷

ಆಕಾರಾಂಸ್ತಾನಹಂ ಸರ್ವಾನಿಹಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸಾರಥೇ!.


ಸಾರಥೇ! O charioteer, ನೃಪತೀನಾಮ್ kings', ವಿನಾಶನೇ in destruction, ಯಾದೃಶಾಃ such kind of, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ in times past, ನಃ us, ಶ್ರುತಾಃ have been heard, ತಾನ್ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all those, ಆಕಾರಾನ್ signs, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಇಹ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I am seeing now.

O charioteer! I now see the very for ebodings I had heard in the past in connection with the death of kings.
ಇಮಾಂ ತು ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಂ ವಾಚಂ ವ್ಯಾಜಹಾರ ಪಿತಾ ತವ.

ಕಾಲಧರ್ಮಪರಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಃ ಪಾಶೈರಿವ ಮಹಾಗಜಃ৷৷2.72.37৷৷


ತವ your, ಪಿತಾ father, ಮಹಾಗಜಃ like a great elephant, ಪಾಶೈರಿವ as though by cords, ಕಾಲಧರ್ಮಪರಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಃ caught by the noose of fate and time, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಮ್ last, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ವಾಚಮ್ words, ವ್ಯಾಜಹಾರ uttered.

Your father, caught by the noose of death, like a great elephant bound by cords, uttered these last words:
ಸಮ್ಮಾರ್ಜನವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಪರುಷಾಣ್ಯುಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ৷৷2.71.37৷৷

ಅಸಂಯತ ಕವಾಟಾನಿ ಶ್ರೀವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ.

ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸಮ್ಮಾರ್ಜನವಿಹೀನಾನಿ unswept, ಕುಟುಂಮ್ಬಿಭವನಾನಿ houses of families, ಪರುಷಾಣಿ dirty, ಉಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ discern, ಅಸಂಯತ ಕವಾಟಾನಿ doors not closed, ಸರ್ವಶಃ on every side, ಶ್ರೀವಿಹೀನಾನಿ bereft of beauty, ಬಲಿಕರ್ಮವಿಹೀನಾನಿ devoid of offering oblations, ಧೂಪಸಮ್ಮೋದನೇನ ಚ with fragrance of burnt incense, ಅನಾಶಿತಕುಟುಮ್ಬಾನಿ familes without food, ಪ್ರಭಾಹೀನಜನಾನಿ ಚ men devoid of brightness, ಅಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಕಾನಿ inauspicious, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see

I see the unswept homes of householders standing dirty with doors not closed. There is no beauty anywhere. No one offers oblations (at the time of worship). There is no fragrance of burning incense. The families have no food to eat. The people look cheerless. I see inauspiciousness everywhere.
ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾಸ್ತೇ ನರಾ ರಾಮಮಾಗತಂ ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪುನರಾಗತಮ್৷৷2.72.38৷৷


ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಆಗತಮ್ returned, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪುನಃ again, ಆಗತಮ್ arrived, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಮ್ mighty-armed, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ with Lakshmana, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ see, ತೇ ನರಾಃ those men, ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾಃ will have their desires fulfilled.

'Those men who will see Rama returning home along with Sita and mighty-armed Lakshmana, will have their desires fulfilled.'
ಸಮ್ಮಾರ್ಜನವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಪರುಷಾಣ್ಯುಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ৷৷2.71.37৷৷

ಅಸಂಯತ ಕವಾಟಾನಿ ಶ್ರೀವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ.

ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನೋ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ಭೂಯಃ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಮಾತರಮ್৷৷2.72.39৷৷


ತತ್ that one, ಶ್ರೂತ್ವಾ on hearing, ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾಪ್ರಿಯಶಂಸನಾತ್ the account of second unpleasant tidings, ವಿಷಸಾದೈವ more distressed, ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನಃ ಭೂತ್ವಾ with down-cast countenance, ಭೂಯಃ again, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ enquired.

Bharata was more distraught on hearing the words that conveyed the second unpleasant tidings. With downcast countenance, he again enquired of his mother thus:
ಸಮ್ಮಾರ್ಜನವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಪರುಷಾಣ್ಯುಪಲಕ್ಷಯೇ৷৷2.71.37৷৷

ಅಸಂಯತ ಕವಾಟಾನಿ ಶ್ರೀವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ.

ಬಲಿಕರ್ಮವಿಹೀನಾನಿ ಧೂಪಸಮ್ಮೋದನೇನ ಚ৷৷2.71.38৷৷

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸೀತಯಾ ಚ ಸಮಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.72.40৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous one, ಸಃ he, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನಃ one who enhances the delight of Kausalya,
ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ with his brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ with Lakshmana too, ಸೀತಯಾ ಚ ಸಮಮ್ with Sita, ಇದಾನೀಮ್ at this time, ಕ್ವ where, ಗತಃ has gone?

Where has righteous Rama who enhances the delight of Kausalya along with his brother Lakshmana and Sita gone now?
ಅಪೇತಮಾಲ್ಯಶೋಭಾನಿ ಹ್ಯಸಮ್ಮೃಷ್ಟಾಜಿರಾಣಿ ಚ.

ದೇವಾಗಾರಾಣಿ ಶೂನ್ಯಾನಿ ನ ಚಾಭಾನ್ತಿ ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್৷৷2.71.40৷৷


ಅಪೇತಮಾಲ್ಯಶೋಭಾನಿ deprived of the splendour of garlands, ಅಸಮ್ಮೃಷ್ಟಾಜಿರಾಣಿ ಚ floors of the front yards unsmeared, ದೇವಾಗಾರಾಃ temples, ಶೂನ್ಯಾನಿ empty, ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್ as before, ನಾಭಾನ್ತಿ ಚ not shining.

The temples stand devoid of the beauty of floral offerings. The floors of front yards are left unswept and unsmeared. They look deserted, devoid of brightness of the past.
ತಥಾ ಪೃಷ್ಟಾ ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಮಾಖ್ಯಾತುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ.

ಮಾತಾಸ್ಯ ಸುಮಹದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಶಙ್ಕಯಾ৷৷2.72.41৷৷


ತಥಾ thus, ಪೃಷ್ಟಾ questioned, ಅಸ್ಯ ಮಾತಾ his mother, ಸುಮಹತ್ great, ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ grievous, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಪ್ರಿಯಶಙ್ಕಯಾ presuming it to be pleasant, ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಮ್ exact fact, ಆಖ್ಯಾತುಮ್ to relate, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ commenced.

Thus questioned, his mother started relating the exact events, presuming them to be pleasant tidings (for Bharata).
ದೇವತಾರ್ಚಾಃ ಪ್ರವಿದ್ಧಾಶ್ಚ ಯಜ್ಞಗೋಷ್ಠ್ಯಸ್ತಥಾವಿಧಾಃ.

ಮಾಲ್ಯಾಪಣೇಷು ರಾಜನ್ತೇ ನಾದ್ಯ ಪಣ್ಯಾನಿ ವಾ ತಥಾ৷৷2.71.41৷৷


ದೇವತಾರ್ಚಾಃ offerings to deities, ಪ್ರವಿದ್ಧಾ: ಚ have been dispensed with, ಯಜ್ಞಗೋಷ್ಠ್ಯಃ groups of people performing holy sacrifices, ತಥಾವಿಧಾಃ as before, ತಥಾ usual, ಮಾಲ್ಯಾಪಣೇಷು in the markets where garlands are sold, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಪಣ್ಯಾನಿ items (garlands) for sale, ನ ರಾಜನ್ತೇ are not there.

The offerings to deities have been dispensed with. There are no groups of people performing the usual holy sacrifices. The markets where garlands were sold now stand without them.
ಸ ಹಿ ರಾಜಸುತಃ ಪುತ್ರ! ಚೀರವಾಸಾ ಮಹಾವನಮ್.

ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ಸಹ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಚರೋ ಗತಃ৷৷2.72.42৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! O son, ರಾಜಸುತಃ king's son (prince), ಸಃ that Rama, ಚೀರವಾಸಾಃ attired in garments of bark, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಚರಃ followed by Lakshmana, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ಮಹಾವನಮ್ great forest, ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ to Dandaka, ಗತಃ ಹಿ left.

ದೃಶ್ಯನ್ತೇ ವಣಿಜೋಪ್ಯದ್ಯ ನ ಯಥಾಪೂರ್ವಮತ್ರವೈ.

ಧ್ಯಾನಸಂವಿಗ್ನಹೃದಯಾಃ ನಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾಪಾರಯನ್ತ್ರಿತಾಃ৷৷2.71.42৷৷


ನಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾಪಾರಯನ್ತ್ರಿತಾಃ restrained by the loss of business, ಧ್ಯಾನಸಂವಿಗ್ನಹೃದಯಾಃ with distracted attention, ವಣಿಜೋಪಿ even traders, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಅತ್ರ there, ಯಥಾಪೂರ್ವಮ್ as before, ನ ದೃಶ್ಯನ್ತೇ are not seen.

Even traders seem restrained by the loss of business. They are not seen as before concentrating on their trade.
ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭರತಸ್ತ್ರಸ್ತೋ ಭ್ರಾತುಶ್ಚಾರಿತ್ರಶಙ್ಕಯಾ.

ಸ್ವಸ್ಯ ವಂಶಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯಾತ್ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷2.72.43৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತತ್ that word, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಸ್ವಸ್ಯ ವಂಶಸ್ಯ his dynasty's, ಮಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯಾತ್ due to greatness, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ his brother's, ಚರಿತ್ರಶಙ್ಕಯಾ doubting about unrighteous conduct, ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to ascertain, ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ again started.

Conscious of the glory of his race, Bharata continued to enquire if there was any unrighteous conduct on the part of his brother.
ದೇವಾಯತನಚೈತ್ಯೇಷು ದೀನಾಃ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಣಾಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷2.71.43৷৷

ಮಲಿನಂ ಚಾಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಾಕ್ಷಂ ದೀನಂ ಧ್ಯಾನಪರಂ ಕೃಶಮ್.

ತಥಾ as before, ದೇವಾಯತನಚೈತ್ಯೇಷು in temples and in sanctuaries, ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಣಾಃ multitude of birds, ದೀನಾಃ dispirited, ಪುರೇ in the city, ಸಸ್ತ್ರೀಪುಂಸಮ್ with women and men, ಜನಮ್ people, ಉತ್ಕಣ್ಠಿತಮ್ with choked throats, ಮಲಿನಮ್ dull, ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಾಕ್ಷಮ್ eyes filled with tears, ದೀನಮ್ piteous, ಧ್ಯಾನಪರಮ್ absorbed in distressing thoughts, ಕೃಶಮ್ emaciated, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see.

I see groups of birds frequenting the temples. The sanctuaries appear dispirited. The people in the city, both men and women look dull, emaciated, pitiable with throats choked. Their eyes are filled with tears and minds absorbed in distressing thoughts.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಧನಂ ಹೃತಂ ರಾಮೇಣ ಕಸ್ಯಚಿತ್.

ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನಾಢ್ಯೋ ದರಿದ್ರೋ ವಾ ತೇನಾಪಾಪೋ ವಿಹಿಂಸಿತಃ৷৷2.72.44৷৷


ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಕಸ್ಯಚಿತ್ of some one or the other, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಧನಮ್ wealth of brahmin, ನ ಹೃತಂ did not seize, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope not, ತೇನ by him, ಆಢ್ಯಃ a rich man, ದರಿದ್ರೋ ವಾ or a poor one, ಅಪಾಪಃ innocent, ನ ವಿಹಿಂಸಿತಃ was not tortured, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope.

I hope Rama did not seize the wealth of any brahmin nor did any harm to an innocent person, whether rich or poor.

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ the prince, ಪರದಾರಾನ್ another man's wife, ನಾಭಿಮನ್ಯತೇ ವಾ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ did not covet, I hope, ಸ: he, Rama, ಭ್ರೂಣಹಾ like a sinner who had slain a child in embryo, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ to Dandaka forest, ಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ why, ವಿವಾಸಿತಃ has been banished.

I hope he did not covet another man's wife. Like a sinner who had slain a child in embryo why has he been banished to Dandaka forest?
ಇತ್ಯೇವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಭರತಸ್ಸೂತಂ ತಂ ದೀನಮಾನಸಃ.

ತಾನ್ಯನಿಷ್ಟಾನ್ಯಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಜಗೃಹಂ ಯಯೌ৷৷2.71.45৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ತಾನಿ these, ಅನಿಷ್ಟಾನಿ ominous sights, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ದೀನಮಾನಸಃ with depressed heart, ತಂ ಸೂತಮ್ that charioteer, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ರಾಜಗೃಹಮ್ king's palace, ಯಯೌ proceeded.

With these words said to the charioteer, Bharata, having seen such ominous sights in Ayodhya, proceeded to the king's palace with a depressed heart.
ಅಥಾಸ್ಯ ಚಪಲಾ ಮಾತಾ ತತ್ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮ ಯಥಾತಥಮ್.

ತೇನೈವ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಸ್ವಭಾವೇನ ವ್ಯಾಹರ್ತುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷2.72.46৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಚಪಲಾ the capricious one, ಅಸ್ಯ ಮಾತಾ his mother, ತೇನ by the same, ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ಸ್ವಭಾವೇನ with her earlier feminine disposition, ತತ್ that, ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮ her own deeds, ಯಥಾತಥಮ್ faithfully, ವ್ಯಾಹರ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ commenced.

Then the capricious mother, with the same feminine disposition which she had
displayed earlier, started giving a faithful account of all her deeds.
ತಾಂ ಶೂನ್ಯಶೃಙ್ಗಾಟಕವೇಶ್ಮರಥ್ಯಾಂ ರಜೋರುಣದ್ವಾರಕವಾಟಯನ್ತ್ರಾಮ್.

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪುರೀಮಿನ್ದ್ರಪುರಪ್ರಕಾಶಾಂ ದುಃಖೇನ ಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣತರೋ ಬಭೂವ৷৷2.71.46৷৷


ಶೂನ್ಯಶೃಙ್ಗಾಟಕವೇಶ್ಮರಥ್ಯಾಮ್ a place with crossroads, houses, and highways deserted, ರಜೋರುಣದ್ವಾರಕವಾಟಯನ್ತ್ರಾಮ್ the fittings (nuts and bolts) on the doors red with dust, ಇನ್ದ್ರಪುರಪ್ರಕಾಶಾಮ್ once having the lustre of the city of Indra, ತಾಂ ಪುರೀಮ್ that city, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ದುಃಖೇನ with grief, ಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣತರಃ overwhelmed, ಬಭೂವ became.

As he (Bharata) beheld the city of Ayodhya that once had the lustre of the city of Indra, now with its cross-roads, houses and highways all deserted, the fittings (nuts and bolts) on the doors red with dust, he was overwhelmed with grief.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಾ ತು ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಭರತೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಉವಾಚ ವಚನಂ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಮೂಢಾ ಪಣ್ಡಿತಮಾನಿನೀ৷৷2.72.47৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ great, ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾ spoken, ಮೂಢಾ the foolish lady, ಪಣ್ಡಿತಮಾನಿನೀ thinking herself to be wise, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ delightfully, ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ spoke.

On hearing the words of great Bharata, that foolish woman Kaikeyi thinking herself to be wise, cheerfully said:
ಬಹೂನಿ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ಮನಸೋಪ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ ಯಾನ್ಯನ್ಯದಾ ನಾಸ್ಯ ಪುರೇ ಬಭೂವುಃ.

ಅವಾಕ್ಛಿರಾ ದೀನಮನಾ ನಹೃಷ್ಟಃ ಪಿತುರ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ವೇಶ್ಮ৷৷2.71.47৷৷


ಅನ್ಯದಾ in other times, ಯಾನಿ such, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಪುರೇ in the city, ನ ಬಭೂವುಃ did not happen, ಬಹೂನಿ many, ಮನಸಃ to the mind, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ unpleasant ones, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ seeing, ಅವಾಕ್ಛಿರಾಃ with head bowed down, ದೀನಮನಾಃ dejected mind, ನಹೃಷ್ಟಃ cheerless, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ magnanimous, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವೇಶ್ಮ palace, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.

Having witnessed many unpleasant things that had never happened before, the magnanimous Bharata who was looking cheerless and dejected entered his father's palace with his head bent down.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕಸಪ್ತತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the seventyfirst sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.

ಕಶ್ಚಿನ್ನಾಢ್ಯೋ ದರಿದ್ರೋ ತೇನಾಪಾಪೋ ವಿಹಿಂಸಿತಃ.

ನ ರಾಮಃ ಪರದಾರಾಂಶ್ಚ ಚಕ್ಷುರ್ಭ್ಯಾಮಪಿ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.72.48৷৷


ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಕಸ್ಯಚಿತ್ some one's, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಧನಮ್ wealth of brahmin, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ even a little, ನ ಹೃತಮ್ was not seized, ತೇನ by him, ಆಢ್ಯಃ whether rich, ದರಿದ್ರೋ ವಾ or poor ಅಪಾಪಃ innocent, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ even a little, ನ ವಿಹಿಂಸಿತಃ was not harmed, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪರದಾರಾನ್ wife of other man, ಚಕ್ಷುರ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with the eyes, ನ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ did not see.

Rama did not rob any brahmin of even a little wealth nor did he harm any innocent man, whether rich or poor. He never casts his eyes on another's wife.
ಮಯಾ ತು ಪುತ್ರ! ಶ್ರುತ್ವೈವ ರಾಮಸ್ಯೈವಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್.

ಯಾಚಿತಸ್ತೇ ಪಿತಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಚ ವಿವಾಸನಮ್৷৷2.72.49৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! O my son, ಮಯಾ ತು by me, ರಾಮಸ್ಯೈವ Rama's, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ consecration, ಶ್ರುತ್ವೈವ on hearing itself, ಪಿತಾ your father, ತೇ for you, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವಿವಾಸನಂ ಚ banishment, ಯಾಚಿತಃ has been asked.

My son, I on hearing of Rama's consecration asked your father to confer the kingdom on you and banish Rama.
ಸ ಸ್ವವೃತ್ತಿಂ ಸಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ಪಿತಾ ತೇ ತತ್ತಥಾಕರೋತ್.

ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ಸಹ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಃ ಪ್ರೇಷಿತಸ್ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ৷৷2.72.50৷৷


ತೇ ಪಿತಾ your father, ಸಃ he, ಸ್ವವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ kept up his own promise, ಸಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ having followed, ತತ್ that one, ತಥಾ exactly, ಅಕರೋತ್ performed, ಸಹಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿ along with Lakshmana, ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama also, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಪ್ರೇಷಿತಃ were sent.

Your father, faithful to his word, banished Rama along with Lakshmana and Sita.
ತಮಪಶ್ಯನ್ಪ್ರಿಯಂಪುತ್ರಂ ಮಹೀಪಾಲೋ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಪರಿದ್ಯೂನಃ ಪಞ್ಚತ್ವಮುಪಪೇದಿವಾನ್৷৷2.72.51৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ renowned, ಮಹೀಪಾಲಃ ruler of this earth, ತಮ್ that, ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಪುತ್ರಮ್ beloved son, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ not being able to behold, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕ ಪರಿದ್ಯೂನಃ stricken by filial grief, ಪಞ್ಚತ್ವಮ್ the state of merger in the five elements, ಉಪಪೇದಿವಾನ್ obtained.

The renowned ruler of the earth (king Dasaratha), unable to behold (the sorry state of) his beloved son and stricken by filial grief, merged into the five elements (died).
ತ್ವಯಾತ್ವಿದಾನೀಂ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ! ರಾಜತ್ವಮವಲಮ್ಬ್ಯತಾಮ್.

ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ ಹಿ ಮಯಾ ಸರ್ವಮಿದಮೇವಂ ವಿಧಂ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.72.52৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ! O knower of dharma, ಇದಾನೀಮ್ now, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ರಾಜತ್ವಮ್ kingship, ಅವಲಮ್ಬ್ಯತಾಮ್ take possession of, ಮಯಾ by me, ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ for your sake only, ಏವಂ ವಿಧಮ್ in this manner, ಇದಂ ಸರ್ವಮ್ all this, ಕೃತಂ ಹಿ has been done.

O knower of dharma, assume kingship now. It is only for your sake that all this has been done by me.
ಮಾ ಶೋಕಂ ಮಾ ಚ ಸನ್ತಾಪಂ ಧೈರ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಯ ಪುತ್ರಕ.

ತ್ವದಧೀನಾ ಹಿ ನಗರೀ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚೈತದನಾಮಯಮ್৷৷2.72.53৷৷


ಪುತ್ರಕ my son, ಶೋಕಮ್ sorrow, ಮಾ ಆಶ್ರಯ do not take recourse, ಸನ್ತಾಪಂ ಚ to remorse, ಮಾ do not take recourse, ಧೈರ್ಯಮ್ courage, ಆಶ್ರಯ take recourse, ನಗರೀ this city, ತ್ವದಧೀನಾ is under
your control, ಅನಾಮಯಮ್ free from obstacles, ಏತತ್ this, ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚ kingdom also.

My son, give up sorrow and agony and take recourse to courage. This city as well as the kingdom, free from all obstacles, is under your control.
ತತ್ಪುತ್ರ! ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ವಿಧಿನಾ ವಿಧಿಜ್ಞೈರ್ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮುಖ್ಯೈ ಸ್ಸಹಿತೋ ದ್ವಿಜೇನ್ದ್ರೈಃ.

ಸಙ್ಕಾಲ್ಯ ರಾಜಾನಮದೀನಸತ್ತ್ವಮಾತ್ಮಾನಮುರ್ವ್ಯಾಮಭಿಷೇಚಯಸ್ವ৷৷2.72.54৷৷


ತತ್ hence, ಪುತ್ರ! O my son, ವಿಧಿಜ್ಞೈ: by those well-versed in rules, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮುಖ್ಯೈಃ headed by Vasistha, ದ್ವಿಜೇನ್ದ್ರೈಃ by the best of brahmins, ಸಹಿತಃ with, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ to the king, ವಿಧಿನಾ duly, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಸಙ್ಕಾಲ್ಯ performing obsequies, ಅದೀನ ಸತ್ತ್ವಮ್ without getting depressed in spirit, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ yourself, ಉರ್ವ್ಯಾಮ್ on this earth, ಅಭಿಷೇಚಯಸ್ವ get coronated.

Therefore, my son, under the guidance of Vasistha and other noble brahmins, well-versed in rituals, quickly perform the funeral obsequies in accordance with tradition and without getting depressed in spirit, get yourself coronated as lord of this earth.
