[Bharata reproaches his mother --- decides to restore the glory of Ayodhya --- vows to get back Rama]

ತಾಂ ತಥಾ ಗರ್ಹಯಿತ್ವಾ ತು ಮಾತರಂ ಭರತಸ್ತದಾ.

ರೋಷೇಣ ಮಹತಾವಿಷ್ಟಃ ಪುನರೇವಾಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಚಃ৷৷2.74.1৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ತಾಮ್ her, ತಥಾ in that manner, ಗರ್ಹಯಿತ್ವಾ having reproached, ಮಹತಾ with great, ರೋಷೇಣ wrath, ಆವಿಷ್ಟಃ was overtaken, ಪುನರೇವ once again, ವಚಃ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Overtaken by great wrath, Bharata reproached his mother and then said to her again:
ರಾಜ್ಯಾದ್ಭ್ರಂಶಸ್ವ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ನೃಶಂಸೇ! ದುಷ್ಟಚಾರಿಣಿ!.

ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಾ ಚ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಮಾ ಮೃತಂ ರುದತೀ ಭವ৷৷2.74.2৷৷


ನೃಶಂಸೇ! O cruel one, ದುಷ್ಟಚಾರಿಣಿ of wicked conduct, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! O Kaikeyi, ರಾಜ್ಯಾತ್ from the kingdom, ಭ್ರಂಶಸ್ವ may be deprived, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ by righteousness, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಾ abandoned, ಮೃತಮ್ having died, ಮಾ about me, ರುದತೀ ಭವ keep weepng.

O cruel Kaikeyi of wicked conduct, you may be deprived of the kingdom. Abandoned by righteousness, you shall be weeping for me after my death.
ಕಿನ್ನು ತೇದೂಷಯದ್ರಾಜಾ ರಾಮೋ ವಾ ಭೃಶಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ.

ಯಯೋರ್ಮೃತ್ಯುರ್ವಿವಾಸಶ್ಚ ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ ತುಲ್ಯಮಾಗತೌ৷৷2.74.3৷৷


ಯಯೋಃ to both of whom, ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ on your account, ತುಲ್ಯಮ್ similar, ಮೃತ್ಯುಃ death, ವಿವಾಸಶ್ಚ exile, ಆಗತೌ have come, ರಾಜಾ the king, ಭೃಶಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ highly virtuous, ರಾಮೋ ವಾ or Rama, ತೇ to you, ಕಿನ್ನು what possible, ಅದೂಷಯತ್ reviled?

Death for the king and exile for Rama, similar fate for both, have befallen on your account. What possible harm, either the king or the highly virtuous Rama has done to you?
ಭ್ರೂಣಹತ್ಯಾಮಸಿ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಕುಲಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ವಿನಾಶನಾತ್.

ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ನರಕಂ ಗಚ್ಛ ಮಾ ಚ ಭರ್ತು ಸ್ಸಲೋಕತಾಮ್৷৷2.74.4৷৷


ಅಸ್ಯ ಕುಲಸ್ಯ of this race, ವಿನಾಶನಾತ್ by destruction, ಭ್ರೂಣಹತ್ಯಾಮ್ the sin of killing an unborn, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಅಸಿ you have earned, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ನರಕಮ್ to hell, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ಭರ್ತುಃ to husband, ಸಲೋಕತಾಮ್ similar world, ಮಾ ಚ not attain.

O Kaikeyi! by destroying this race you have earned the demerit of killing an embryo and shall enter hell. You shall never attain the same state of living, in the afterworld of your husband.
ಯತ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಹೀದೃಶಂ ಪಾಪಂ ಕೃತಂ ಘೋರೇಣ ಕರ್ಮಣಾ.

ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಹಿತ್ವಾ ಮಮಾಪ್ಯಾಪಾದಿತಂ ಭಯಮ್৷৷2.74.5৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಘೋರೇಣ by a horrible, ಕರ್ಮಣಾ deed, ಯತ್ what ever reason, ಈದೃಶಮ್ such, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಕೃತಮ್ has been committed, (for that reason), ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved of all worlds, ಹಿತ್ವಾ renouncing, ಮಮಾಪಿ for me too, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ಆಪಾದಿತಮ್ has overtaken me.

That by doing this horrible deed you have committed a great sin of renouncing Rama, the beloved of all worlds. Therefore I am overtaken by fear.
ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ ವೃತ್ತೋ ರಾಮಶ್ಚಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.

ಅಯಶೋ ಜೀವಲೋಕೇ ಚ ತ್ವಯಾಹಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿತಃ৷৷2.74.6৷৷


ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತೇ for your sake, ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ my father, ವೃತ್ತಃ died, ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama also, ಅರಣ್ಯಮ್ to the forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ taken refuge, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಜೀವಲೋಕೇ in this world of living beings, ಅಯಶಃ ಚ ignominy, ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿತಃ obtained.

You have caused my father's death and Rama's exile. As for me, I have obtained ignominy in this world.
ಮಾತೃರೂಪೇ! ಮಮಾಮಿತ್ರೇ! ನೃಶಂಸೇ! ರಾಜ್ಯಕಾಮುಕೇ!.

ನ ತೇಹ ಮಭಿಭಾಷ್ಯೋಸ್ಮಿ ದುರ್ವೃತ್ತೇ! ಪತಿಘಾತಿನಿ!৷৷2.74.7৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಮಾತೃರೂಪೇ mother in appearance, ಅಮಿತ್ರೇ enemy, ನೃಶಂಸೇ O cruel woman, ರಾಜ್ಯಕಾಮುಕೇ O woman having lust for kingdom, ದುರ್ವೃತ್ತೇ of vicious character, ಪತಿಘಾತಿನಿ murderess (of husband), ಅಹಮ್ I, ತೇ to you, ಅಭಿಭಾಷ್ಯಃ ನಾಸ್ಮಿ I shall not be speaking to you.

O cruel woman, O woman of vicious character! you are an enemy assuming a mother's form, lustful for kingdom. You are a murderess (of your husband) and I shall never speak to you.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ಯಾಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾ ಮಮ ಮಾತರಃ.

ದುಃಖೇನ ಮಹತಾವಿಷ್ಟಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಕುಲದೂಷಿಣೀಮ್৷৷2.74.8৷৷


ಕುಲದೂಷಿಣೀಮ್ one who vitiated the race, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having obtained, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ Sumitra also, ಮಮ my, ಯಾಃ ಅನ್ಯಾಃ all the other, ಮಾತರಃ mothers, ಮಹತಾ great, ದುಃಖೇನ sorrow, ಆವಿಷ್ಟಾಃ are overwhelmed.

As you have vitiated the race, my mothers Kausalya and Sumitra are overwhelmed with great sorrow.
ನ ತ್ವಮಶ್ವಪತೇಃ ಕನ್ಯಾ ಧರ್ಮರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ.

ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ತತ್ರ ಜಾತಾಸಿ ಕುಲಪ್ರಧ್ವಂಸಿನೀ ಪಿತುಃ৷৷2.74.9৷৷

ಯತ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕೋ ರಾಮೋ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಯಣಃ.

ವನಂ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾಪಿತೋ ದುಃಖಾತ್ಪಿತಾ ಚ ತ್ರಿದಿವಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.74.10৷৷


ಯತ್ since, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ the virtuous, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ constantly, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಯಣಃ ever devoted to
truth, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾಪಿತಃ has been sent away, ಪಿತಾ ಚ father, ದುಃಖಾತ್ due to grief, ತ್ರಿದಿವಮ್ to heaven, ಗತಃ had gone, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಧರ್ಮರಾಜಸ್ಯ of the righteous king, ಧೀಮತಃ of the sagacious one, ಅಶ್ವಪತೇಃ king Aswapati's, ಕನ್ಯಾ daughter, ನ not, ತತ್ರ in that race, ಜಾತಾ born, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಕುಲಪ್ರಧ್ವಂಸಿನೀ destroying the race, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಅಸಿ you are a demoness.

As you sent virtuous Rama, ever devoted to truth, into the forest, my father died out of grief (due to separation from his son). Therefore, you are not the true daughter of the righteous and sagacious king Aswapati but a demoness born there to destroy your father's race.
ಯತ್ಪ್ರಧಾನಾಸಿ ತತ್ಪಾಪಂ ಮಯಿ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ವಿನಾಕೃತೇ.

ಭ್ರಾತೃಭ್ಯಾಂ ಚ ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತೇ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಚಾಪ್ರಿಯೇ!৷৷2.74.11৷৷


ಯತ್ಪ್ರಧಾನಾ ಅಸಿ committing the sin with a sole objective, ತತ್ that, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಪಿತ್ರಾ ವಿನಾ separated from father, ಕೃತೇ made, ಭ್ರಾತೃಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by the brothers, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತೇ abandoned, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ for the whole world, ಅಪ್ರಿಯೇ ಚ not a dear one, ಮಯಿ fallen on me.

The sin you have committed with a particular objective has affected me and (as a result) I am left without my father. I am abandoned by my brothers. I am hated by every one in this entire world.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾಂ ವಿಯುಕ್ತಾಂ ಪಾಪನಿಶ್ಚಯೇ!.

ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಕಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ ತ್ವದ್ಯ ಲೋಕಂ ನಿರಯಗಾಮಿನಿ!৷৷2.74.12৷৷


ಪಾಪನಿಶ್ಚಯೇ! O! woman of sinful convictions, ನಿರಯಗಾಮಿನಿ! O one who would attain hell, ಧರ್ಮಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾಮ್ endowed with righteous conduct, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ Kausalya, ವಿಯುಕ್ತಾಮ್ separated from her son, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having committed, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಕಂ ಲೋಸಕಮ್ what afterworld, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ will attain.

O woman of sinful convictions! you will go to hell. You have separated righteous Kausalya from her son. For having committed such a sin, what afterworld awaits you (is not known)?
ಕಿಂ ನಾವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ ಕ್ರೂರೇ! ನಿಯತಂ ಬನ್ಧುಸಂಶ್ರಯಮ್.

ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಂ ಪಿತೃಸಮಂ ರಾಮಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಯಾತ್ಮಸಮ್ಭವಮ್৷৷2.74.13৷৷


ಕ್ರೂರೇ! O cruel one, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಃ Kausalya's, ಆತ್ಮಸಮ್ಭವಮ್ born of her very self, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ನಿಯತಮ್ self-restrained, ಬನ್ಧುಸಂಶ್ರಯಮ್ refuge for relations, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಮ್ eldest, ಪಿತೃಸಮಮ್ the equal of his father, ಕಿಂ ನಾವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ why do you not realise?

O cruel one! why do you not realise that Rama, born of Kausalya, is the eldest son and equal to my father? He is self-restrained and a refuge to his kith and kin.
ಅಙಗಪ್ರತ್ಯಙಗಜಃ ಪುತ್ರೋ ಹೃದಯಾಚ್ಚಾಪಿ ಜಾಯತೇ.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೋ ಮಾತುಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾ ಏವ ತು ಬಾನ್ಧವಾಃ৷৷2.74.14৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಅಙ್ಗಪ್ರತ್ಯಙ್ಗಜಃ born from every limb big or small, ಹೃದಯಾಚ್ಚಾಪಿ from the heart too, ಜಾಯತೇ is born, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಮಾತುಃ for a mother, ಪ್ರಿಯತಮಃ most beloved one, ಬಾನ್ಧವಾಃ relatives, ಪ್ರಿಯಾ ಏವ ತು are loving ones only.

A son born from every limb, big or small, and from the heart is the most beloved of all for his mother while the other relatives are only loving ones.
ಅನ್ಯದಾ ಕಿಲ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾ ಸುರಭಿ ಸ್ಸುರಸಮ್ಮತಾ.

ವಹಮಾನೌ ದದರ್ಶೋರ್ವ್ಯಾಂ ಪುತ್ರೌ ವಿಗತಚೇತಸೌ৷৷2.74.15৷৷


ಅನ್ಯದಾ at some other time, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾ conversant with righteous ways, ಸುರಸಮ್ಮತಾ highly respected by the gods, ಸುರಭಿಃ Surabhi (the divine cow), ಉರ್ವ್ಯಾಮ್ on the earth, ವಹಮಾನೌ carrying the burden (drawing the plough), ವಿಗತಚೇತಸೌ senses lost, ಪುತ್ರೌ sons, ದದರ್ಶ ಕಿಲ beheld, as they say.

It is said that once upon a time Surabhi, the divine cow, highly respected by the gods and conversant with righteous ways, beheld her two sons who fainted due to fatigue while carrying the burden of the ploughs.
ತಾವರ್ಧದಿವಸೇ ಶ್ರಾನ್ತೌ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪುತ್ರೌ ಮಹೀತಲೇ.

ರುರೋದ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲೇಕ್ಷಣಾ৷৷2.74.16৷৷


ಮಹೀತಲೇ on the earth, ಅರ್ಧದಿವಸೇ at mid-day, ಶ್ರಾನ್ತೌ tired, ಪುತ್ರೌ sons, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕೇನ by the grief for her son, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪರ್ಯಾಕುಲೇಕ್ಷಣಾ eyes filled with tears, ರುರೋದ wailed.

On seeing her two sons lying on earth exhausted, she wailed in distress for them with her eyes filled with tears.
ಅಧಸ್ತಾದ್ವ್ರಜತಸ್ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಸುರರಾಜ್ಞೋ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಬಿನ್ದವಃ ಪತಿತಾ ಗಾತ್ರೇ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಾ ಸ್ಸುರಭಿಗನ್ಧಿನಃ৷৷2.74.17৷৷


ತಸ್ಯಾಃ her (Kamadhenu's), ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಾಃ fine, ಸುರಭಿಗನ್ಧಿನಃ fragrant, ಬಿನ್ದವಃ tear drops, ಅಧಸ್ತಾತ್ down below, ವ್ರಜತಃ proceeding, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ great, ಸುರರಾಜ್ಞಃ of the king of the gods, ಗಾತ್ರೇ on the body, ಪತಿತಾಃ fell.

The fine drops of her fragnant tears trickled down the body of the great king of the gods (Indra).
ಇನ್ದ್ರೋಪ್ಯಶ್ರುನಿಪಾತಂ ತಂ ಸ್ವಗಾತ್ರೇ ಪುಣ್ಯಗನ್ಧಿನಮ್.

ಸುರಭಿಂ ಮನ್ಯತೇ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಭೂಯಸೀಂ ತಾಂ ಸುರೇಶ್ವರಃ৷৷2.74.18৷৷


ಸುರೇಶ್ವರಃ lord of the gods, ಇನ್ದ್ರೋಪಿ Indra, ಸ್ವಗಾತ್ರೇ on his body, ಪುಣ್ಯಗನ್ಧಿನಮ್ of holy fragrance, ತಮ್ that, ಅಶ್ರುಪಾತಮ್ flow of tears, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ on seeing, ತಾಮ್ her, ಭೂಯಸೀಮ್ venerated, ಸುರಭಿಮ್ as Kamadhenu, ಮನ್ಯತೇ thought

When Indra, lord of the gods, saw those tears of holy fragrance fallen on his body he
understood that the tears were shed by the venerated Kamadhenu.
ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣ ಶ್ಶಕ್ರಸ್ತಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಸುರಭಿಂ ಸ್ಥಿತಾಮ್.

ಆಕಾಶೇ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಂ ದೀನಾಂ ರುದನ್ತೀಂ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.74.19৷৷


ಶಕ್ರಃ Indra, ಆಕಾಶೇ in the sky, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ looking up, ಸ್ಥಿತಾಮ್ stationed, ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಮ್ distressed, ದೀನಾಮ್ miserable, ರುದನ್ತೀಮ್ wailing, ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಾಮ್ in intense pain, ತಾಂ ಸುರಭಿಮ್ to that Surabhi, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

While looking around Indra beheld Kamadhenu in intense pain stationed in the sky, looking distressed and miserable, and wailing.
ತಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಂ ವಜ್ರಪಾಣಿರ್ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್.

ಇನ್ದ್ರಃ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರುದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ಸ್ಸುರರಾಜೋಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಚಃ৷৷2.74.20৷৷


ವಜ್ರಪಾಣಿಃ wielder of thunderbolt, ಸುರರಾಜಃ king of the gods, ಇನ್ದ್ರಃ Indra, ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಮ್ consumed with grief, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್ renowned, ತಾಮ್ that kamadhenu, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನಃ alarmed, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with palms joined in reverence, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

The king of the gods, Indra, wielder of thunderbolt, saw the renowned Kamadhenu consumed with grief. Alarmed, he said to her with palms joined in reverence:
ಭಯಂ ಕಚ್ಛಿನ್ನ ಚಾಸ್ಮಾಸು ಕುತಶ್ಚಿದ್ವಿದ್ಯತೇ ಮಹತ್.

ಕುತೋನಿಮತ್ತಶ್ಶೋಕಸ್ತೇ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಸರ್ವಹಿತೈಷಿಣಿ৷৷2.74.21৷৷


ಸರ್ವಹಿತೈಷಿಣಿ O well-wisher of all, ಅಸ್ಮಾಸು for us, ಕುತಶ್ಚಿತ್ from any quarter, ಮಹತ್ great, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ ಕಚ್ಛಿತ್ does not exist, ತೇ your, ಶೋಕಃ sorrow, ಕುತೋನಿಮಿತ್ತಃ for what reason, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ speak.

'O holy cow fear not. You wish the welfare of all, Has any great calamity befallen us from any quarter? I hope not. What is the reason for your sorrow? Tell me'.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಾ ತು ಸುರಭಿ ಸ್ಸುರರಾಜೇನ ಧೀಮತಾ.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ತತೋ ಧೀರಾ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಾಕ್ಯವಿಶಾರದಾ৷৷2.74.22৷৷


ಧೀಮತಾ by the sagacious, ಸುರರಾಜೇನ by Indra, king of the gods, ಏವಮ್ this way, ಉಕ್ತಾ having been uttered, ಧೀರಾ calm, ಸುರಭಿಃ Surabhi, ತತಃ then, ವಾಕ್ಯ ವಿಶಾರದಾ proficient in speech,
ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

On hearing the sagacious Indra, king of the gods, Kamadhenu, proficient in speech, calmly replied:
ಶಾನ್ತಂ ಪಾಪಂ ನ ವಃ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಕುತಶ್ಚಿದಮರಾಧಿಪಃ.

ಅಹಂ ಮಗ್ನೌ ತು ಶೋಚಾಮಿ ಸ್ವಪುತ್ರೌ ವಿಷಮೇ ಸ್ಥಿತೌ৷৷2.74.23৷৷

ಏತೌ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕೃಶೌ ದೀನೌ ಸೂರ್ಯರಶ್ಮಿಪ್ರತಾಪಿತೌ.

ಬಾಧ್ಯಮಾನೌ ಬಲೀವರ್ಧೌ ಕರ್ಷಕೇಣ ಸುರಾಧಿಪ৷৷2.74.24৷৷


ಅಮರಾಧಿಪಃ O lord of the immortals (Indra), ಪಾಪಮ್ ಶಾನ್ತಮ್ god forbid, ವಃ for you, ಕುತಶ್ಚಿತ್ from any quarter, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ any calamity, ನ not, ಸುರಾಧಿಪ O lord of the gods, ಅಹಮ್ I, ವಿಷಮೇ in trouble, ಸ್ಥಿತೌ entangled, ಸೂರ್ಯರಶ್ಮಿಪ್ರತಾಪಿತೌ scorched by the rays of the Sun, ಕೃಶೌ emaciated, ಕರ್ಷಕೇಣ by a ploughman, ಬಾಧ್ಯಮಾನೌ beaten, ಮಗ್ನೌ immersed in grief, ಸ್ವಪುತ್ರೌ my own sons, ಏತೌ these, ಬಲೀವರ್ಧೌ pair of bulls, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ದೀನೌ miserable, ಶೋಚಾಮಿ weeping.

'God forbid, O Indra, lord of the Immortals! no calamity has befallen you from any quarter. Only I am in trouble. I am weeping for these pair of bulls, my own sons who are in difficulty. When I see them scorched by the rays of the Sun, miserable, emaciated and weeping, beaten by a ploughman, I am immersed in grief'.
ಮಮಕಾಯಾತ್ಪ್ರಸೂತೌ ಹಿ ದುಃಖಿತೌ ಭಾರಪೀಡಿತೌ.

ಯೌ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪರಿತಪ್ಯೇಹಂ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ಪುತ್ರಸಮಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.74.25৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಭಾರಪೀಡಿತೌ oppressed by the burden, ದುಃಖಿತೌ anguished, ಯೌ them both, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪರಿತಪ್ಯೇ excessively grieving, ಮಮ my, ಕಾಯಾತ್ from the body, ಪ್ರಸೂತೌ ಹಿ were born, ಪುತ್ರಸಮಃ equal to a son, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ a beloved, ನಾಸ್ತಿ no one is there.

'These bulls were born from my body and they are oppressed by the burden. Having seen their anguish, I am extremely grieved. There is none so dear as a son'.
ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಪುತ್ರಸಹಸ್ರೈಸ್ತು ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಂ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಮಿದಂ ಜಗತ್.

ತಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರುದತೀಂ ಶಕ್ರೋ ನ ಸುತಾನ್ಮನ್ಯತೇ ಪರಮ್৷৷2.74.26৷৷


ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ whose, ಪುತ್ರಸಹಸ್ರೈಃ by a thousand sons, ಇದಂ ಜಗತ್ this world, ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಮ್ are spread over, ತಾಮ್ to her (Kamadhenu), ರುದತೀಮ್ weeping, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಶಕ್ರಃ Indra, ಸುತಾತ್ more than a son, ಪರಮ್ great one, ನ not, ಮನ್ಯತೇ considers.

The wish-fulfilling cow (Kamadhenu) had innumerable sons spread all over the world. When Indra saw that Kamadhenu too was weeping for her sons, he concluded 'there is no one greater than a son'.
ಸದಾಪ್ರತಿಮವೃತ್ತಾಯಾಃ ಲೋಕಧಾರಣಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ.

ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ಯಾ ಗುಣನಿತ್ಯಾಯಾ ಸ್ಸ್ವಭಾವಪರಿಚೇಷ್ಟಯಾ৷৷2.74.27৷৷

ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಪುತ್ರಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಸಾಪಿ ಶೋಚತಿ ಕಾಮಧುಕ್.

ಕಿಂ ಪುನರ್ಯಾ ವಿನಾ ರಾಮಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.74.28৷৷


ಲೋಕಧಾರಣಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ with a desire to nourish the worlds, ಸದಾ always, ಅಪ್ರತಿಮವೃತ್ತಾಯಾಃ of unequalled conduct, ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ಯಾಃ endowed with prosperity, ಸ್ವಭಾವಪರಿಚೇಷ್ಟಯಾ in accordance with her nature, ಗುಣನಿತ್ಯಾಯಾಃ by her virtues, ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ such ones, ಪುತ್ರಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ a thousand sons, ಸಾ that, ಕಾಮಧುಕ್ ಅಪಿ Kamadhenu also, ಶೋಚತಿ is weeping, ಯಾ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ that Kausalya, ರಾಮಂ ವಿನಾ bereft of Rama, ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will she be her normal self again?, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ why again.

Wishing always to nourish the worlds Kamadhenu conducts herself with an unequalled character. In accordance with her nature, she has imbibed in herself eminent virtues. She is endowed with all prosperity. In spite of her thousand sons, she
is weeping thus for her two bulls, what can one say of Kausalya separated from her only son! Will she be her normal self again?'
ಏಕಪುತ್ರಾ ಚ ಸಾಧ್ವೀ ಚ ವಿವತ್ಸೇಯಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ಕೃತಾ.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತ್ವಂ ಸತತಂ ದುಃಖಂ ಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ಚೇಹ ಚ ಲಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.74.29৷৷


ಏಕಪುತ್ರಾ ಚ blessed with an only son, ಸಾಧ್ವೀ ಚ pious woman, ಇಯಮ್ this lady, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವಿವತ್ಸಾ childless, ಕೃತಾ has been rendered, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ಚ even after death, ಇಹ ಚ in this world also, ಸತತಮ್ always, ದುಃಖಮ್ grief, ಲಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ you shall experience.

This pious lady is blessed with only one son and (now) has been rendered childless by you. Therefore, you shall experience grief in this world and hereafter.
ಅಹಂ ಹ್ಯಪಚಿತಿಂ ಭ್ರಾತುಃ ಪಿತುಶ್ಚ ಸಕಲಾಮಿಮಾಮ್.

ವರ್ಧನಂ ಯಶಸಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ৷৷2.74.30৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ for my brother, ಪಿತುಶ್ಚ for father, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಸಕಲಾಮ್ complete, ಅಪಚಿತಿಮ್ atonement for improper conduct, ಯಶಸಃ of fame, ವರ್ಧನಮ್ enhancement, ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will do, ಸಂಶಯಃ doubt, ನ not.

As for me, I shall do whatever is necessary for the atonement of the improper conduct shown towards my father and brother and for enhancement of my fame. There is no doubt about it.
ಅನಾಯಯಿತ್ವಾ ತನಯಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಯಾ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್.

ಸ್ವಯಮೇವ ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವನಂ ಮುನಿನಿಷೇವಿತಮ್৷৷2.74.31৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್ highly powerful, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಯಾಃ ತನಯಮ್ Kausalya's son, ಅನಾಯಯಿತ್ವಾ if I do not bring back, ಸ್ವಯಮೇವ myself, ಮುನಿನಿಷೇವಿತಮ್ frequented by the ascetics, ವನಮ್ lonely forest, ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall enter.

If I fail to bring back the mighty son of Kausalya, I shall enter the forest frequented by
ascetics.
ನ ಹ್ಯಹಂ ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪೇ ಪಾಪೇ! ಪಾಪಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ಕೃತಮ್.

ಶಕ್ತೋ ಧಾರಯಿತುಂ ಪೌರೈರಶ್ರುಕಣ್ಠೈ ರ್ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತಃ৷৷2.74.32৷৷


ಪಾಪೇ! O vicious one, ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪೇ O evil-intentioned one, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಶ್ರುಕಣ್ಠೈಃ by those whose throats are choked with tears, ಪೌರೈಃ by the citizens (of Ayodhya), ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತಃ am watched, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಕೃತಮ್ has been committed, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಧಾರಯಿತುಮ್ to endure, ನ ಶಕ್ತಃ ಹಿ I am not capable.

O vicious one!, O evil-intentioned one! being watched by the citizens with their throats choked with tears of grief, I cannot endure the burden of the sin committed by you.
ಸಾ ತ್ವಮಗ್ನಿಂ ಪ್ರವಿಶ ವಾ ಸ್ವಯಂ ವಾ ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ವಿಶ.

ರಜ್ಜುಂ ಬಧಾನ ವಾ ಕಣ್ಠೇ ನ ಹಿ ತೇನ್ಯತ್ಪರಾಯಣಮ್৷৷2.74.33৷৷


ಸಾ ತ್ವಮ್ such a person like you, ಅಗ್ನಿಂ ವಾ either the fire, ಪ್ರವಿಶ enter, ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ವಾ or Dandaka forest, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ yourself, ವಿಶ enter ವಾ or, ಕಣ್ಠೇ round the throat, ರಜ್ಜುಮ್ rope, ಬಧಾನ fasten, ತೇ to you, ಅನ್ಯತ್ any other, ಪರಾಯಣಮ್ recourse, ನ ಹಿ is not there.

Jump into the fire or go to Dandaka forest or hang yourself. There is no other recourse for you.
ಅಹಮಪ್ಯವನೀಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ ರಾಮೇ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮೇ.

ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವಿಪ್ರವಾಸಿತಕಲ್ಮಷಃ৷৷2.74.34৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮೇ having truth as his prowess, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ಅವನೀಮ್ this earth (kingdom), ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ will obtain, ಅಹಮಪಿ I also, ವಿಪ್ರವಾಸಿತಕಲ್ಮಷಃ free from all blemishes, ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಃ shall have my desire accomplished, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall become.

When Rama who has truth as his prowess accepts the kingdom, I shall have accomplished my purpose at last and I shall be free from all blemishes.
ಇತಿ ನಾಗ ಇವಾರಣ್ಯೇ ತೋಮರಾಙ್ಕುಶಚೋದಿತಃ.

ಪಪಾತ ಭುವಿ ಸಙ್ಕೃದ್ಧೋ ನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ನಿವ ಪನ್ನಗಃ৷৷2.74.35৷৷


ಇತಿ in this way, ಅರಣ್ಯೇ in the forest, ತೋಮರಾಙ್ಕುಶಚೋದಿತಃ driven by prods and goads (sharp instruments), ನಾಗಃ ಇವ like an elephant, ಸಙ್ಕೃದ್ಧಃ enraged, ಪನ್ನಗಃ ಇವ like a serpent, ನಿಃಶ್ವಸನ್ hissing, ಭುವಿ on the ground, ಪಪಾತ fell down.

In this way like an elephant driven by prods and goads in the forest, highly enraged Bharata hissing like a serpent dropped down on the ground.
ಸಂರಕ್ತನೇತ್ರ ಶ್ಶಿಥಿಲಾಮ್ಭರಸ್ತದಾ ವಿಧೂತಸರ್ವಾಭರಣಃ ಪರನ್ತಪಃ.

ಬಭೂವ ಭೂಮೌ ಪತಿತೋ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜಶ್ಶಚೀಪತೇಃ ಕೇತುರಿವೋತ್ಸವಕ್ಷಯೇ৷৷2.74.36৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಸಂರಕ್ತನೇತ್ರಃ with bloodshot eyes, ಶಿಥಿಲಾಮ್ಭರಃ with his raiment in disarray, ವಿಧೂತಸರ್ವಾಭರಣಃ with his ornaments tossed about, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಪತಿತಃ fallen, ಪರನ್ತಪಃ scorcher of enemies, ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜಃ king's son, ಉತ್ಸವಕ್ಷಯೇ at the close of the festival, ಶಚೀಪತೇಃ of the husband of Sachi (Indra's), ಕೇತುರಿವ ಬಭೂವ like a banner remained.

Prince Bharata, the scorcher of enemies, with blood-shot eyes, raiment in disarray, ornaments tossed about lay fallen on the ground like the banner of Indra (husband of Sachi) at the close of the festival of flag-hoisting.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಚತುಸ್ಸಪ್ತತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the seventyfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
