[Bharata performs funeral rites of king Dasaratha on the bank of Sarayu.]

ತಮೇವಂ ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಂ ಭರತಂ ಕೈಕಯೀ ಸುತಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ವದತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ಶ್ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾಗೃಷಿಃ৷৷2.76.1৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಮ್ tormented with grief, ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತಮ್ son of Kaikeyi, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to that Bharata, ವದತಾಮ್ among the eloquent, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ best, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾಕ್ a man of excellent speech, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ ಋಷಿಃ sage Vasistha, ಉವಾಚ said.

Vasistha, the most eloquent and the best of ascetics said to Bharata, the son of Kaikeyi who was tormented with grief:
ಅಲಂ ಶೋಕೇನ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ ಮಹಾಯಶಃ.

ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಂ ನರಪತೇಃ ಕುರು ಸಂಯಾನಮುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.76.2৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಃ of great renown, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ king's son, ತೇ ಭದ್ರಂ bless you, ಶೋಕೇನ by grief, ಅಲಮ್ enough, ನರಪತೇಃ king's, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಮ್ time has come, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ best, ಸಂಯಾನಮ್ funeral rites, ಕುರು perform.

O prince of great renown, may God bless you! It is not proper on your part to grieve. It is time to perform the funeral rites of the king in the best way possible.
ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ ವಚ ಶ್ಶೃತ್ವಾ ಭರತೋ ಧಾರಣಾಂ ಗತಃ.

ಪ್ರೇತಕಾರ್ಯಾಣಿ ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ ಕಾರಯಾಮಾಸ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್৷৷2.76.3৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ knower of his duty, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ Vasistha's, ವಚಃ words, ಶ್ರೂತ್ವಾ on hearing, ಧಾರಣಾಮ್ steadiness, ಗತಃ regained, ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ all, ಪ್ರೇತಕಾರ್ಯಣಿ funeral rites, ಕಾರಯಾಮಾಸ began the performance.

On hearing the words of Vasistha, dutiful Bharata regained his steadiness and engaged in the performance of the funeral rites.
ಉದ್ಧೃತಂ ತೈಲಸಂರೋಧಾತ್ಸತು ಭೂಮೌ ನಿವೇಶಿತಮ್.

ಆಪೀತವರ್ಣವದನಂ ಪ್ರಸುಪ್ತಮಿವ ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್৷৷2.76.4৷৷

ಸಂವೇಶ್ಯ ಶಯನೇ ಚಾಗ್ಯ್ರೇ ನಾನಾರತ್ನಪರಿಷ್ಕೃತೇ.

ತತೋ ದಶರಥಂ ಪುತ್ರೋ ವಿಲಲಾಪ ಸುದುಃಖಿತಃ৷৷2.76.5৷৷


ಸಃ ಪುತ್ರಃ that son Bharata, ತೈಲಸಂರೋಧಾತ್ from the oil container, ಉದ್ಧೃತಮ್ raised, ಭೂಮೌ on the
floor, ನಿವೇಶಿತಮ್ placed, ಆಪೀತವರ್ಣವದನಮ್ with a pale yellow-coloured face, ಪ್ರಸುಪ್ತಮಿವ as if sleeping, ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್ protector of the earth, ದಶರಥಮ್ Dasaratha, ನಾನಾರತ್ನ ಪರಿಷ್ಕೃತೇ adorned with every kind of gem, ಅಗ್ಯ್ರೇ on a magnificient, ಶಯನೇ on the couch, ಸಂವೇಶ್ಯ ತತಃ having placed then, ಸುದುಃಖಿತಃ in extreme distress, ವಿಲಲಾಪ lamented.

The mortal remains of king Dasaratha, protector of the earth, was taken out of the oil container and placed on the floor. His pale, yellow face appeared as if he was asleep. Thereafter it was laid upon a magnificent couch adorned with every kind of gem. On seeing Dasaratha in that state Bharata lamented in extreme distress.
ಕಿಂ ತೇ ವ್ಯವಸಿತಂ ರಾಜನ್! ಪ್ರೋಷಿತೇ ಮಯ್ಯನಾಗತೇ.

ವಿವಾಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಂ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್৷৷2.76.6৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಪ್ರೋಷಿತೇ when I was away from home, ಮಯಿ ಅನಾಗತೇ before I could return, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ righteous one, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್ valiant, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ Lakshmana, ವಿವಾಸ್ಯ banished, ತೇ you, ಕಿಮ್ what, ವ್ಯವಸಿತಮ್ was resolved?

What have you done, O king, between my absence and my arrival? You have banished the righteous Rama and the valiant Lakshmana.
ಕ್ವ ಯಾಸ್ಯಸಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜ! ಹಿತ್ವೇಮಂ ದುಃಖಿತಂ ಜನಮ್.

ಹೀನಂ ಪುರುಷಸಿಂಹೇನ ರಾಮೇಣಾಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾ৷৷2.76.7৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜ! O great king!, ಅಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾ by a man of pious acts, ಪುರುಷಸಿಂಹೇನ by a lion among men, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಹೀನಮ್ left, ದುಃಖಿತಮ್ bewailing, ಇಮಂ ಜನಮ್ this person, ಹಿತ್ವಾ leaving, ಕ್ವ where, ಯಾಸ್ಯಸಿ will you go?

O great king! Where will you go leaving me who is bewailing for having been left by Rama, the lion among men and a man of pious deeds?
ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಂ ತು ತೇ ರಾಜನ್! ಕೋಸ್ಮಿನ್ಕಲ್ಪಯಿತಾ ಪುರೇ

ತ್ವಯಿ ಪ್ರಯಾತೇ ಸ್ವಸ್ತಾತ ರಾಮೇ ಚ ವನಮಾಶ್ರಿತೇ৷৷2.76.8৷৷


ರಾಜನ್! O king!, ತಾತ O father!, ತ್ವಯಿ when you, ಸ್ವಃ to heaven, ಪ್ರಯಾತೇ having gone, ರಾಮೇ ಚ Rama, ವನಮ್ forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತೇ having taken refuge, ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ this, ಪುರೇ in your city, ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಮ್ welfare and security, ಕಲ್ಪಯಿತಾ who will arrange.

O king! O father! you have gone to heaven and Rama has taken shelter in the forest now. Who will take care of the welfare and security of your city?
ವಿಧವಾ ಪೃಥಿವೀ ರಾಜನ್! ಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಹೀನಾ ನ ರಾಜತೇ.

ಹೀನಚನ್ದ್ರೇವ ರಜನೀ ನಗರೀ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಮಾ৷৷2.76.9৷৷


ರಾಜನ್! O king!, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಹೀನಾ bereft of, ಪೃಥಿವೀ the earth, ವಿಧವಾ is a widow, ನ ರಾಜತೇ does not shine, ನಗರೀ city, ಹೀನಚನ್ದ್ರಾ without Moon, ರಜನೀವ like the night, ಮಾ to me, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ appears.

O king! bereft of you, the earth (kingdom) is widowed and has lost its radiance. The city appears to me like a moonless night.
ಏವಂ ವಿಲಪಮಾನಂ ತಂ ಭರತಂ ದೀನಮಾನಸಮ್.

ಅಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಚನಂ ಭೂಯೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ತು ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ৷৷2.76.10৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ವಿಲಪಮಾನಮ್ lamenting, ದೀನಮಾನಸಮ್ dejected mind, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to that Bharata, ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ great ascetic, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ Vasistha, ಭೂಯಃ again, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

To Bharata who was thus lamenting with a dejected mind, the great ascetic Vasistha once again said:
ಪ್ರೇತಕಾರ್ಯಾಣಿ ಯಾನ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಾನಿ ವಿಶಾಂ ಪತೇಃ.

ತಾನ್ಯವ್ಯಗ್ರಂ ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ! ಕ್ರಿಯಾನ್ತಾಮವಿಚಾರಿತಮ್৷৷2.76.11৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ O mighty-armed one, ಅಸ್ಯ ವಿಶಾಂಪತೇಃ for this king, ಯಾನಿ those, ಪ್ರೇತಕಾರ್ಯಾಣಿ funeral rites, ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಾನಿ are required to be done, ತಾನಿ them, ಅವಿಚಾರಿತಮ್ without hesitation, ಅವ್ಯಗ್ರಮ್
attentively, ಕ್ರಿಯಾನ್ತಾಮ್ may be performed.

O mighty-armed prince, the funeral rites that are required to be performed for the departed king ought to be done carefully without any shortcomings.
ತಥೇತಿ ಭರತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯಾಭಿಪೂಜ್ಯ ತತ್.

ಋತ್ವಿಕ್ಪುರೋಹಿತಾಚಾರ್ಯಾನ್ ಸ್ತ್ವರಯಾಮಾಸ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷2.76.12৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತಥೇತಿ 'Be it so', ವರಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ Vasistha's, ತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words, ಅಭಿಪೂಜ್ಯ honouring, ಸರ್ವಶಃ every way, ಋತ್ವಿಕ್ಪುರೋಹಿತಾಚಾರ್ಯಾನ್ learned Vedic scholars, family priests and spiritual preceptors, ತ್ವರಯಾಮಾಸ hastened them up.

Bharata said, 'Be it so' in obedience to Vasistha, who hastened up the learned Vedic scholars, family priests and preceptors to perform various rites.
ಯೇ ತ್ವಗ್ನಯೋ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಸ್ಯ ಚಾಗ್ನ್ಯಗಾರಾದ್ಬಹಿಷ್ಕೃತಾಃ.

ಋತ್ವಿಗ್ಭಿರ್ಯಾಜಕೈಶ್ಚೈವ ತೇ ಆಹ್ರಿಯನ್ತ ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ৷৷2.76.13৷৷


ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king's, ಯೇ ಅಗ್ನಯಃ the fire, ಅಗ್ನ್ಯಗಾರಾತ್ from fire-sanctuary, ಬಹಿಷ್ಕೃತಾಃ have been put outside, ತೇ they, ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ in accordance with the ritual precepts, ಋತ್ವಿಗ್ಭಿ: by Vedic priests, ಯಾಜಕೈಶ್ಚೈವ by sacrificial attendants, ಆಹ್ರಿಯನ್ತ were withdrawn.

The sacrificial fire of the king has been put outside the fire-sanctuary in accordance with the ritual precepts and were withdrawn by the attendants and priests well-versed in Vedic lore.
ಶಿಬಿಕಾಯಾಮಥಾೋಪ್ಯ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಗತಚೇತಸಮ್.

ಬಾಷ್ಪಕಣ್ಠಾ ವಿಮನಸಸ್ತಮೂಹುಃ ಪರಿಚಾರಕಾಃ৷৷2.76.14৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಪರಿಚಾರಕಾಃ the attendants, ಗತಚೇತಸಮ್ deceased, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಶಿಬಿಕಾಯಾಮ್ on a litter, ಆರೋಪ್ಯ placing, ಬಾಷ್ಪಕಣ್ಠಾಃ with their throats choked with tears, ವಿಮನಸಃ with dejected mind, ತಮ್ him, ಊಹುಃ carried him away.

Thereafter the attendants raised the mortal remains of the deceased king onto a litter, with dejected minds, throats choked with tears and carried him away.
ಹಿರಣ್ಯಂ ಚ ಸುವರ್ಣಂ ಚ ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ ಚ.

ಪ್ರಕಿರನ್ತೋ ಜನಾ ಮಾರ್ಗಂ ನೃಪತೇರಗ್ರತೋ ಯಯುಃ৷৷2.76.15৷৷


ಜನಾಃ people, ನೃಪತೇಃ king's, ಅಗ್ರತಃ ahead, ಹಿರಣ್ಯಮ್ gold, ಸುವರ್ಣಂ ಚ with bright colour, ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ differents kinds, ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ ಚ garments, ಪ್ರಕಿರನ್ತಃ strewing, ಮಾರ್ಗಮ್ on the way, ಯಯುಃ went.

The people went ahead of the king's body strewing on the way gold of brilliant colour and different kinds of garments.
ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುನಿರ್ಯಾಸಾನ್ ಸರಲಂ ಪದ್ಮಕಂ ತಥಾ.

ದೇವದಾರೂಣಿ ಚಾಹೃತ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇಪಯನ್ತಿ ತಥಾಪರೇ৷৷2.76.16৷৷

ಗನ್ಧಾನುಚ್ಚಾವಚಾಂಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾಂ ಸ್ತತ್ರ ಗತ್ವಾಥ ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್.

ತತ್ರ ಸಂವೇಶಯಾಮಾಸುಶ್ಚಿತಾಮಧ್ಯೇ ತಮೃತ್ವಿಜಃ৷৷2.76.17৷৷


ತಥಾ like that, ಅಪರೇ others, ಚನ್ದನಾಗರೂನಿರ್ಯಾಸಾನ್ sandal, agaru and fragrant gum gugul, the
resin of Balsa tree, ಸರಲಮ್ sarala tree, ಪದ್ಮಕಮ್ padmaka tree, ದೇವದಾರೂಣಿ ಚ devadaru tree, ಅನ್ಯಾನ್ other, ಉಚ್ಚಾವಚಾನ್ of many kinds, ಗನ್ಧಾನ್ fragrant substances, ಆಹೃತ್ಯ having brought, ತತ್ರ there, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಕ್ಷೇಪಯನ್ತಿ were strewn, ಅಥ there, ಋತ್ವಿಜಃ priests, ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್ the body of the king, ತತ್ರ there, ಚಿತಾಮಧ್ಯೇ in the centre of fire, ಸಂವೇಶಯಾಮಾಸುಃ laid it down.

In this way others brought sandal, agaru and fragrant gum gugul, the resin of balsa tree and woods of sarala, padmaka and devadaru and built a pyre and strew many kinds of fragrant substances on it. Thereafter the priests laid the mortal remains of the king in the centre of the pyre.
ತದಾ ಹುತಾಶನಂ ಹುತ್ವಾ ಜೇಪುಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ತದೃತ್ವಿಜಃ.

ಜಗುಶ್ಚ ತೇ ಯಥಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ತತ್ರ ಸಾಮಾನಿ ಸಾಮಗಾಃ৷৷2.76.18৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತದೃತ್ವಿಜಃ his priests, ತಸ್ಯ that king's, ಹುತಾಶನಮ್ fire, ಹುತ್ವಾ offering oblations, ಜೇಪುಃ intoned prayers, ತತ್ರ there, ತೇ those, ಸಾಮಗಾಃ those who chant Sama Veda, ಯಥಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ in accordance with sacred scriptures, ಸಾಮಾನಿ hymns, ಜಗುಶ್ಚ sang.

Then the priests offering oblations to the king's fire, intoned prayers. The reciters of Sama Veda sang the hymns in accordance with the sacred scriptures.
ಶಿಬಿಕಾಭಿಶ್ಚ ಯಾನೈಶ್ಚ ಯಥಾರ್ಹಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಯೋಷಿತಃ.

ನಗರಾ ನ್ನಿರ್ಯಯುಸ್ತತ್ರ ವೃದ್ಧೈಃ ಪರಿವೃತಾ ಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.76.19৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತಸ್ಯ his (the king's), ಯೋಷಿತಃ wives, ವೃದ್ಧೈಃ with aged guards, ಪರಿವೃತಾಃ surrounded by, ಯಥಾರ್ಹಮ್ according to their rank, ಶಿಬಿಕಾಭಿಶ್ಚ in palanquins, ಯಾನೈಶ್ಚ in other carriages, ನಗರಾತ್ from the city, ತತ್ರ to that place, ನಿರ್ಯಯುಃ departed.

Then in accordance with their rank and surrounded by aged guards, the wives of king Dasaratha departed for that place from the city in palanquins and other carriages.
ಪ್ರಸವ್ಯಂ ಚಾಪಿ ತಂ ಚಕುಃ ಋತ್ವಿಜೋಗ್ನಿಚಿತಂ ನೃಪಮ್.

ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಶ್ಚ ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಃ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಪ್ರಮುಖಾಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.76.20৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಋತ್ವಿಜಃ priests, ಶಾಕೇಸನ್ತಪ್ತಾಃ consumed with grief, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಪ್ರಮುಖಾಃ led by Kausalya, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಶ್ಚ women also, ಅಗ್ನಿಚಿತಮ್ engulfed by flames, ತಂ ನೃಪಮ್ that king, ಪ್ರಸವ್ಯಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಚಕ್ರುಃ circumambulated in the reverse direction.

Then the priests and other women led by Kausalya who was consumed with grief circumambulated the pyre in the reverse direction as the king's body was engulfed by flames.
ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀನಾಮಿವ ನಾರೀಣಾಂ ನಿನಾದಸ್ತತ್ರ ಶುಶ್ರುವೇ.

ಆರ್ತಾನಾಂ ಕರುಣಂ ಕಾಲೇ ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀನಾಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ৷৷2.76.21৷৷


ತತ್ರ ಕಾಲೇ at that time, ಆರ್ತಾನಾಮ್ of the distressed persons, ಕರುಣಮ್ piteously, ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀನಾಮ್ of those women crying, ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ in thousands, ನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ women's, ನಿನಾದಃ sound, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀನಾಮಿವ like the sound of the kraunchas (birds), ಶುಶ್ರುವೇ was heard.

At that time, piteous cries of distressed women in their thousands like the piercing cries of female kraunchas (birds) were heard.
ತತೋ ರುದನ್ತ್ಯೋ ವಿವಶಾವಿಲಪ್ಯ ಚ ಪುನಃ ಪುನಃ.

ಯಾನೇಭ್ಯಸ್ಸರಯೂತೀರಮವತೇರುರ್ವರಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ৷৷2.76.22৷৷


ತತಃ then, ರುದನ್ತ್ಯೋ weeping, ವಿವಶಾಃ uncontrolled, ವರಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ courtesans, ಪುನಃ ಪುನಃ again and again, ವಿಲಪ್ಯ lamenting, ಸರಯೂತೀರಮ್ on the bank of the river Sarayu, ಯಾನೇಭ್ಯಃ from the carriages, ಅವತೇರುಃ alighted.

Thereafter, the courtesans weeping uncontrollably and, lamenting again and again, alighted from carriages on the bank of the river Sarayu.
ಕೃತ್ವೋದಕಂ ತೇ ಭರತೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ನೃಪಾಙ್ಗನಾ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಪುರೋಹಿತಾ ಶ್ಚ.

ಪುರಂಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯಾಶ್ರುಪರೀತನೇತ್ರಾಃ ಭೂಮೌ ದಶಾಹಂ ವ್ಯನಯನ್ತ ದುಃಖಮ್৷৷2.76.23৷৷


ನೃಪಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ wives of the king, ತೇ they, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಪುರೋಹಿತಾಶ್ಚ counsellors and priests, ಭರತೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ along with Bharata, ಉದಕಮ್ water-libations, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having offered, ಅಶ್ರುಪರೀತನೇತ್ರಾಃ with their eyes filled with tears, ಪುರಮ್ the city, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having re-entered, ದಶಾಹಮ್ ten days, ಭೂಮೌ on the floor, ದು:ಖಮ್ their mourning period, ವ್ಯನಯನ್ತ spent.

The wives of the king, counsellors and priests along with Bharata offered water-libation and entered the city with tearful eyes. They spent the ten-day mourning period sleeping on the ground (floor) in great grief.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಷಟಸಪ್ತತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the seventysixth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
