[While Bharata looks at Manthara furiously, Satrughna drags her and throws her down --- Kaikeyi pleads for mercy and pacifies Manthara.]

ಅಥ ಯಾತ್ರಾಂ ಸಮೀಹನ್ತಂ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಜಃ.

ಭರತಂ ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಮಿದಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.78.1৷৷


ಅಥ now, ಯಾತ್ರಾಮ್ journey (to Rama), ಸಮೀಹನ್ತಮ್ wishing, ಶೋಕಸನ್ತಪ್ತಮ್ grief-striken, ಭರತಮ್
Bharata, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಜಃ Lakshmana's younger brother, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ Satrughna, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

As the grief-stricken Bharata was intending to proceed to Rama, Lakshmana's younger brother Satrughna said to him:
ಗತಿರ್ಯ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಂ ದುಃಖೇ ಕಿಂ ಪುನರಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಸ ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸತ್ತ್ವಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಾ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೋ ವನಮ್৷৷2.78.2৷৷


ಯಃ who, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ for all beings, ಗತಿಃ ultimate refuge, ಆತ್ಮನಃ in his own, ದುಃಖೇ distress, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ why again say, ಸಃ he, ಸತ್ತ್ವಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ endowed with strength, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಾ by a woman, ವನಮ್ to forest, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಃ has been exiled.

Couldn't the mighty Rama who is the ultimate refuge of all beings protect himself in his own distress? That Rama has been exiled to the forest by a woman.
ಬಲವಾನ್ವೀರ್ಯಸಮ್ಪನ್ನೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ ಯೋಪ್ಯಸೌ.

ಕಿಂ ನ ಮೋಚಯತೇ ರಾಮಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸ್ಮ ಪಿತೃನಿಗ್ರಹಮ್৷৷2.78.3৷৷


ಬಲವಾನ್ strong, ವೀರ್ಯಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ endowed with prowess, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ Lakshmana by name, ಯಃ whoever, ಅಸೌ ಅಪಿ even himself, ಪಿತೃನಿಗ್ರಹಮ್ restraint of father, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಕಿಮ್ why, ನ ಮೋಚಯತೇ ಸ್ಮ did not release?.

And why did not Lakshmana who is strong and powerful release Rama from exile by restraining our father?
ಪೂರ್ವಮೇವ ತು ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯ ಸ್ಸಮವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ನಯಾನಯೌ.

ಉತ್ಪಥಂ ಯಸ್ಸಮಾರೂಢೋ ರಾಜಾ ನಾರ್ಯಾ ವಶಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.78.4৷৷


ಯಃ who, ನಾರ್ಯಾಃ woman's, ವಶಮ್ the influence, ಗತಃ having come under, ಉತ್ಪಥಮ್ upward course, ಸಮಾರೂಢಃ had climbed, ರಾಜಾ king, ನಯಾನಯೌ what was just or unjust, ಸಮವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having considered, ಪೂರ್ವಮೇವ in the first place, ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಃ could have restrained.

In the first place, the king could have restrained himself by reflecting on whether the course of action adopted by him under the influence of a woman was just or unjust.
ಇತಿ ಸಮ್ಭಾಷಮಾಣೇ ತು ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಜೇ.

ಪ್ರಾಗ್ದ್ವಾರೇಭೂತ್ತದಾ ಕುಬ್ಜಾ ಸರ್ವಾಭರಣಭೂಷಿತಾ৷৷2.78.5৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಜೇ while the brother of Lakshmana, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇ Satrughna, ಇತಿ thus, ಸಮ್ಭಾಷಮಾಣೇ was conversing, ತದಾ then, ಕುಬ್ಜಾ hunchback Manthara, ಸರ್ವಾಭರಣಭೂಷಿತಾ wearing every kind of ornament, ಪ್ರಾಗ್ದ್ವಾರೇ ಅಭೂತ್ arrived at the entrance.

While Satrughna, brother of Lakshmana was conversing thus, the hunchback Manthara decorated with all kinds of ornaments arrived at the entrance.
ಲಿಪ್ತಾ ಚನ್ದನಸಾರೇಣ ರಾಜವಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಬಿಭ್ರತೀ.

ವಿವಿಧಂ ವಿವಿಧೈ ಸ್ತೈಸ್ತೈರ್ಭೂಷಣೈಶ್ಚ ವಿಭೂಷಿತಾ৷৷2.78.6৷৷


ಚನ್ದನಸಾರೇಣ with essence of sandal, ಲಿಪ್ತಾ besmeared, ರಾಜವಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ royal garments, ಬಿಭ್ರತೀ wearing, ವಿವಿಧೈಃ by various kinds of, ತೈಸ್ತೈಃ those particular, ಭೂಷಣೈಶ್ಚ ornaments, ವಿವಿಧಮ್ in many ways, ವಿಭೂಷಿತಾ was adorned.

She had besmeared herself with the essence of sandal, had put on royal garments and
adorned herself in many ways with every kind of ornament.
ಮೇಖಲಾದಾಮಭಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ರೈರನ್ಯೈಶ್ಚ ಶುಭಭೂಷಣೈಃ.

ಬಭಾಸೇ ಬಹುಭಿರ್ಬದ್ಧಾ ರಜ್ಜುಬದ್ಧೇವ ವಾನರೀ৷৷2.78.7৷৷


ಚಿತ್ರೈಃ of different colours, ಮೇಖಲಾದಾಮಭಿಃ with girdle strings, ಅನ್ಯೈಃ by other, ಬಹುಭಿಃ many, ಶುಭಭೂಷಣೈಶ್ಚ with auspicious ornaments, ಬದ್ಧಾ tied around, ರಜ್ಜುಬದ್ಧಾ tied with cords, ವಾನರೀವ like a female monkey, ಬಭಾಸೇ shone.

Tied with colourful girdle strings and wearing many other auspicious ornaments, she
looked like a female monkey tied with a rope.
ತಾಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತದಾ ದ್ವಾಸ್ಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಸುಭೃಶಂ ಪಾಪಕಾರಿಣೀಮ್.

ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾಕರುಣಾಂ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಂ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಾಯ ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್৷৷2.78.8৷৷


ತದಾ then, ದ್ವಾಸ್ಸ್ಥಾಃ the gatekeepers, ಸುಭೃಶಮ್ many, ಪಾಪಕಾರಿಣೀಮ್ doer of sinful deeds, ಅಕರುಣಾಮ್ without compassion, ತಾಂ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಮ್ that hunchback, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ seeing, ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ seizng, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಾಯ to Satrughna, ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ informed.

Seeing the hunchback, doer of many sinful deeds, the gate-keepers caught hold of her and informed Satrughna.
ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕೃತೇ ವನೇ ರಾಮೋ ನ್ಯಸ್ತದೇಹಶ್ಚ ವಃ ಪಿತಾ.

ಸೇಯಂ ಪಾಪಾ ನೃಶಂಸಾ ಚ ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕುರು ಯಥಾಮತಿ৷৷2.78.9৷৷


ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕೃತೇ on whose acount, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವನೇ in the forest, ವಃ ಪಿತಾ your father, ನ್ಯಸ್ತದೇಹಶ್ಚ forsook his body, ಸಾ that, ಪಾಪಾ sinful woman, ನೃಶಂಸಾ ಚ cruel also, ಇಯಮ್ this (Manthara), ತಸ್ಯಾಃ to her, ಯಥಾಮತಿ as you please, ಕುರು do.

Here is that sinful, cruel woman on whose account Rama is in the forest and your father has forsaken his body. Do with her as it pleases you.
ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಶ್ಚ ತದಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ವಚನಂ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಃ.

ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಚರಾನ್ಸರ್ವಾನಿತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಧೃತ ವ್ರತಃ৷৷2.78.10৷৷


ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಃ deeply grieved, ಧೃತ ವ್ರತ: stern and steadfast in his vows, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಶ್ಚ Satrughna also, ತತ್ those, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having known (heard), ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಚರಾನ್ those moving in the inner apartment, ಇತಿ thus, ಉವಾಚ said.

Intensely grieved to hear those words, Satrughna who was steadfast in his vows said to the inmates of the inner apartment:
ತೀವ್ರಮುತ್ಪಾದಿತಂ ದುಃಖಂ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರೂಣಾಂ ಮೇ ತಥಾ ಪಿತುಃ.

ಯಯಾ ಸೇಯಂ ನೃಶಂಸಸ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮಣಃ ಫಲಮಶ್ನುತಾಮ್৷৷2.78.11৷৷


ಯಯಾ by whom, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರೂಣಾಮ್ of our brothers, ಮೇ my, ಪಿತುಃ of father, ತೀವ್ರಮ್ intense, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrow, ಉತ್ಪಾದಿತಮ್ has been caused, ಸಾ ಇಯಮ್ that she, ನೃಶಂಸಸ್ಯ of a malicious, ಕರ್ಮಣಃ actions, ಫಲಮ್ fruits, ಅಶ್ನುತಾಮ್ let her reap.

Let this woman, who caused deep sorrow to our brothers and father, reap the fruit of her malicious actions.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ತೇನಾಶು ಸಖೀಜನಸಮಾವೃತಾ.

ಗೃಹೀತಾ ಬಲವತ್ಕುಬ್ಜಾ ಸಾ ತದ್ಗೃಹಮನಾದಯತ್৷৷2.78.12৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಆಶು quickly, ತೇನ by him, ಬಲವತ್ forcibly, ಗೃಹೀತಾ caught hold of, ಸಖೀಜನ ಸಮಾವೃತಾ surrounded by her companions, ಸಾ ಕುಬ್ಜಾ that hunchback, ತತ್ ಗೃಹಮ್ that house, ಅನಾದಯತ್ reverberated with her cries.

Saying thus, he forcibly caught hold of the hunchback amidst her companions when she filled the house with her cries.
ತತ ಸ್ಸುಭೃಶಸನ್ತಪ್ತಸ್ತಸ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವ ಸ್ಸಖೀಜನಃ.

ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಂ ವಿಪಲಾಯತ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷2.78.13৷৷


ತತಃ then, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ಸರ್ವಃ all, ಸಖೀಜನಃ comapnions, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಮ್ of Satrughna, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಮ್ as enraged one, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having known, ಸುಭೃಶ ಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ extremely pained, ಸರ್ವಶಃ in all directions, ವಿಪಲಾಯತ ran fled.

Perceiving the enraged Satrughna all her companions shook in terror and fled in different directions.
ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯತ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನ ಶ್ಚ ತಸ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವ ಸ್ಸಖೀಜನಃ.

ಯಥಾಯಂ ಸಮುಪಕ್ರಾನ್ತೋ ನಿಶ್ಶೇಷಾಂ ನಃ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.78.14৷৷


ತಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ಸರ್ವಃ all, ಸಖೀಜನಃ companions, ಅಯಮ್ this man, ಯಥಾ in this way, ಸಮುಪಕ್ರಾನ್ತಃ began, ನಃ us, ನಿಃಶೇಷಾಮ್ leaving none, ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ will do, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯತ conversed with each other.

All her companions conversed among themselves. The way he began, it looks he will finish all of us.
ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶಾಂ ವದಾನ್ಯಾಂ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಂ ಚ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಶರಣಂ ಯಾಮ ಸಾ ಹಿ ನೋಸ್ತು ಧ್ರುವಾ ಗತಿಃ৷৷2.78.15৷৷


ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶಾಮ್ compassionate, ವದಾನ್ಯಾಂ ಚ generous, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಮ್ knower of righteousness, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್ illustrious, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ Kausalya, ಶರಣಂ ಯಾಮ we seek refuge, ಸಾ that, ನಃ for us, ಧ್ರುವಾ surely, ಗತಿಃ ಅಸ್ತು is only saviour.

Let us seek refuge under the illustrious Kausalya, who is compassionate, generous, and knower of righteousness. She is our sure saviour.
ಸ ಚ ರೋಷೇಣ ತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷ ಶ್ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನ ಶ್ಶತ್ರುತಾಪನಃ.

ವಿಚಕರ್ಷ ತದಾ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಂ ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀಂ ಧರಣೀತಲೇ৷৷2.78.16৷৷


ರೋಷೇಣ in fury, ತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ a man with blodshot eyes, ಶತ್ರುತಾಪನಃ scorcher of enemies, ಸಃ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ that Satrughna, ತದಾ then, ಕ್ರೋಶನ್ತೀಮ್ shrieking, ಕುಬ್ಜಾಮ್ hunchback, ಧರಣೀತಲೇ on the ground, ವಿಚಕರ್ಷ dragged.

With blood-shot eyes Satrughna, the scorcher of enemies, dragged the shrieking hunchback down the ground in fury.
ತಸ್ಯಾ ಹ್ಯಾಕೃಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾಯಾ ಮನ್ಥರಾಯಾ ಸ್ತತಸ್ತತಃ.

ಚಿತ್ರಂ ಬಹುವಿಧಂ ಭಾಣ್ಡಂ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಂ ತದ್ವ್ಯಶೀರ್ಯತ৷৷2.78.17৷৷


ತಸ್ಯಾಃ that, ಮನ್ಥರಾಯಾಃ Manthara, ಆಕೃಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾಯಾಃ while being dragged, ಚಿತ್ರಮ್ of various colours, ಬಹುವಿಧಮ್ of many kinds, ತತ್ that, ಭಾಣ್ಡಮ್ collection of ornaments, ತತಸ್ತತಃ here and there, ವ್ಯಶೀರ್ಯತ were scattered.

While Manthara was being dragged by Satrughna, the collection of ornaments of many colours and of various kinds worn by her were broken and scattered here and there all over the ground.
ತೇನ ಭಾಣ್ಡೇನ ಸಂಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಂ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಜನಿವೇಶನಮ್.

ಅಶೋಭತ ತದಾ ಭೂಯಃ ಶಾರದಂ ಗಗನಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.78.18৷৷


ತೇನ by that, ಭಾಣ್ಡೇನ with the collection of ornaments, ಸಂಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಮ್ strewn on the ground, ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಜನಿವೇಶನಮ್ the resplendent royal palace, ತದಾ then, ಶಾರದಮ್ autumnal, ಗಗನಂ ಯಥಾ like the sky, ಭೂಯಃ greatly, ಅಶೋಭತ shone.

The resplendent royal palace, strewn all over with several ornaments on the ground shone like the autumnal sky (studded with innumerable stars).
ಸ ಬಲೀ ಬಲವತ್ಕ್ರೋಧಾದ್ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ.

ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮಭಿನಿರ್ಭರ್ತ್ಸ್ಯ ಬಭಾಷೇ ಪರುಷಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.78.19৷৷


ಬಲೀ mighty, ಸಃ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ that best of men, ಕ್ರೋಧಾತ್ out of fury, ಬಲವತ್ forcibly, ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ
seizing, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ಅಭಿನಿರ್ಭರ್ತ್ಸ್ಯ threatening, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh, ವಚಃ words, ಬಭಾಷೇ spoke.

The mighty and the best of men Satrughna seized with fury, forcibly caught hold of that hunchback and censured Kaikeyi with harsh words.
ತೈರ್ವಾಕ್ಯೈಃ ಪರುಷೈರ್ದುಃಖೈಃ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಾ.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಭಯಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಾ ಪುತ್ರಂ ಶರಣಮಾಗತಾ৷৷2.78.20৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಪರುಷೈಃ by harsh, ದುಃಖೈಃ by grievous, ತೈಃ ವಾಕ್ಯೈಃ with those words, ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಾ extremely distressed, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಭಯಸಂತ್ರಸ್ತಾ afraid of calamity from Satrughna, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son
Bharata, ಶರಣಮ್ for protection, ಆಗತಾ reached.

Kaikeyi, deeply distressed at those harsh and grievous words was afraid of Satrughna and sought the protection of her son Bharata.
ತಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಭರತಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಂ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಅವಧ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಂ ಪ್ರಮದಾಃ ಕ್ಷಮ್ಯತಾಮಿತಿ৷৷2.78.21৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಮ್ enraged one, ತಮ್ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಮ್ addressing that Satrugna, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಪ್ರಮದಾಃ women, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ in all beings, ಅವಧ್ಯಾಃ should not to be killed, ಕ್ಷಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ may be pardoned.

Bharata, addressing the enraged Satrughna said Of all beings a lady is not to be killed. Pardon her.
ಹನ್ಯಾಮಹಮಿಮಾಂ ಪಾಪಾಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ದುಷ್ಟಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್.

ಯದಿ ಮಾಂ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕೋ ರಾಮೋ ನಾಸೂಯೇನ್ಮಾತೃಘಾತಕಮ್৷৷2.78.22৷৷


ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ righteous, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಾತೃಘಾತಕಮ್ slayer of mother, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನ ಅಸೂಯೇದ್ಯದಿ if he were not to accuse me, ದುಷ್ಟಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್ a woman of wicked deeds, ಪಾಪಾಮ್ sinful, ಇಮಾಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ this Kaikeyi, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಹನ್ಯಾಮ್ would have killed.

If righteous Rama were not to accuse me of slaying a mother, I would have killed the sinful Kaikeyi of wicked deeds myself.
ಇಮಾಮಪಿ ಹತಾಂ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಂ ಯದಿ ಜಾನಾತಿ ರಾಘವಃ.

ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ಮಾಂ ಚ ಹಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ನಾಭಿಭಾಷಿಷ್ಯತೇ ಧ್ರುವಮ್৷৷2.78.23৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಕುಬ್ಜಾಮ್ ಅಪಿ hunchback also, ಹತಾಮ್ as slain, ಜಾನಾತಿ ಯದಿ if he comes to know, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ surely, ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ you, ಮಾಂ ಚ ಹಿ me also, ನಾಭಿಭಾಷಿಷ್ಯತೇ will never talk (to us).

If righteous Rama comes to know that this hunchback has been slain by us, he will certainly never talk to you or me.
ಭರತಸ್ಯ ವಚಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಜಃ.

ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ ತತೋ ರೋಷಾತ್ತಾಂ ಮುಮೋಚ ಚ ಮನ್ಥರಾಮ್৷৷2.78.24৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನುಜಃ Lakshmana's younger brother, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ Satrughna, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ವಚಃ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ after hearing, ತತಃ then, ರೋಷಾತ್ from fury, ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ restrained, ತಾಮ್ that, ಮನ್ಥರಾಮ್ Manthara, ಮುಮೋಚ ಚ also released.

Hearing the words of Bharata, Satrughna, the younger brother of Lakshmana restrained his fury and also released Manthara.
ಸಾ ಪಾದಮೂಲೇ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಮನ್ಥರಾ ನಿಪಪಾತ ಹ.
