[While Bharata looks at Manthara furiously, Satrughna drags her and throws her down --- Kaikeyi pleads for mercy and pacifies Manthara.]

అథ యాత్రాం సమీహన్తం శత్రుఘ్నో లక్ష్మణానుజః.

భరతం శోకసన్తప్తమిదం వచనమబ్రవీత్৷৷2.78.1৷৷

అథ now, యాత్రామ్ journey (to Rama), సమీహన్తమ్ wishing, శోకసన్తప్తమ్ grief-striken, భరతమ్
Bharata, లక్ష్మణానుజః Lakshmana's younger brother, శత్రుఘ్నః Satrughna, ఇదమ్ these, వచనమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

As the grief-stricken Bharata was intending to proceed to Rama, Lakshmana's younger brother Satrughna said to him:

గతిర్య స్సర్వభూతానాం దుఃఖే కిం పునరాత్మనః.

స రామ స్సత్త్వసమ్పన్నః స్త్రియా ప్రవ్రాజితో వనమ్৷৷2.78.2৷৷

యః who, సర్వభూతానామ్ for all beings, గతిః ultimate refuge, ఆత్మనః in his own, దుఃఖే distress, కిం పునః why again say, సః he, సత్త్వసమ్పన్నః endowed with strength, రామః Rama, స్త్రియా by a woman, వనమ్ to forest, ప్రవ్రాజితః has been exiled.

Couldn't the mighty Rama who is the ultimate refuge of all beings protect himself in his own distress? That Rama has been exiled to the forest by a woman.

బలవాన్వీర్యసమ్పన్నో లక్ష్మణో నామ యోప్యసౌ.

కిం న మోచయతే రామం కృత్వా స్మ పితృనిగ్రహమ్৷৷2.78.3৷৷

బలవాన్ strong, వీర్యసమ్పన్నః endowed with prowess, లక్ష్మణో నామ Lakshmana by name, యః whoever, అసౌ అపి even himself, పితృనిగ్రహమ్ restraint of father, కృత్వా having made, రామమ్ Rama, కిమ్ why, న మోచయతే స్మ did not release?.

And why did not Lakshmana who is strong and powerful release Rama from exile by restraining our father?

పూర్వమేవ తు నిగ్రాహ్య స్సమవేక్ష్య నయానయౌ.

ఉత్పథం యస్సమారూఢో రాజా నార్యా వశం గతః৷৷2.78.4৷৷

యః who, నార్యాః woman's, వశమ్ the influence, గతః having come under, ఉత్పథమ్ upward course, సమారూఢః had climbed, రాజా king, నయానయౌ what was just or unjust, సమవేక్ష్య having considered, పూర్వమేవ in the first place, నిగ్రాహ్యః could have restrained.

In the first place, the king could have restrained himself by reflecting on whether the course of action adopted by him under the influence of a woman was just or unjust.

ఇతి సమ్భాషమాణే తు శత్రుఘ్నే లక్ష్మణానుజే.

ప్రాగ్ద్వారేభూత్తదా కుబ్జా సర్వాభరణభూషితా৷৷2.78.5৷৷

లక్ష్మణానుజే while the brother of Lakshmana, శత్రుఘ్నే Satrughna, ఇతి thus, సమ్భాషమాణే was conversing, తదా then, కుబ్జా hunchback Manthara, సర్వాభరణభూషితా wearing every kind of ornament, ప్రాగ్ద్వారే అభూత్ arrived at the entrance.

While Satrughna, brother of Lakshmana was conversing thus, the hunchback Manthara decorated with all kinds of ornaments arrived at the entrance.

లిప్తా చన్దనసారేణ రాజవస్త్రాణి బిభ్రతీ.

వివిధం వివిధై స్తైస్తైర్భూషణైశ్చ విభూషితా৷৷2.78.6৷৷

చన్దనసారేణ with essence of sandal, లిప్తా besmeared, రాజవస్త్రాణి royal garments, బిభ్రతీ wearing, వివిధైః by various kinds of, తైస్తైః those particular, భూషణైశ్చ ornaments, వివిధమ్ in many ways, విభూషితా was adorned.

She had besmeared herself with the essence of sandal, had put on royal garments and
adorned herself in many ways with every kind of ornament.

మేఖలాదామభిశ్చిత్రైరన్యైశ్చ శుభభూషణైః.

బభాసే బహుభిర్బద్ధా రజ్జుబద్ధేవ వానరీ৷৷2.78.7৷৷

చిత్రైః of different colours, మేఖలాదామభిః with girdle strings, అన్యైః by other, బహుభిః many, శుభభూషణైశ్చ with auspicious ornaments, బద్ధా tied around, రజ్జుబద్ధా tied with cords, వానరీవ like a female monkey, బభాసే shone.

Tied with colourful girdle strings and wearing many other auspicious ornaments, she
looked like a female monkey tied with a rope.

తాం సమీక్ష్య తదా ద్వాస్స్థాస్సుభృశం పాపకారిణీమ్.

గృహీత్వాకరుణాం కుబ్జాం శత్రుఘ్నాయ న్యవేదయన్৷৷2.78.8৷৷

తదా then, ద్వాస్స్థాః the gatekeepers, సుభృశమ్ many, పాపకారిణీమ్ doer of sinful deeds, అకరుణామ్ without compassion, తాం కుబ్జామ్ that hunchback, సమీక్ష్య seeing, గృహీత్వా seizng, శత్రుఘ్నాయ to Satrughna, న్యవేదయన్ informed.

Seeing the hunchback, doer of many sinful deeds, the gate-keepers caught hold of her and informed Satrughna.

యస్యాః కృతే వనే రామో న్యస్తదేహశ్చ వః పితా.

సేయం పాపా నృశంసా చ తస్యాః కురు యథామతి৷৷2.78.9৷৷

యస్యాః కృతే on whose acount, రామః Rama, వనే in the forest, వః పితా your father, న్యస్తదేహశ్చ forsook his body, సా that, పాపా sinful woman, నృశంసా చ cruel also, ఇయమ్ this (Manthara), తస్యాః to her, యథామతి as you please, కురు do.

Here is that sinful, cruel woman on whose account Rama is in the forest and your father has forsaken his body. Do with her as it pleases you.

శత్రుఘ్నశ్చ తదాజ్ఞాయ వచనం భృశదుఃఖితః.

అన్తఃపురచరాన్సర్వానిత్యువాచ ధృత వ్రతః৷৷2.78.10৷৷

భృశదుఃఖితః deeply grieved, ధృత వ్రత: stern and steadfast in his vows, శత్రుఘ్నశ్చ Satrughna also, తత్ those, వచనమ్ words, ఆజ్ఞాయ having known (heard), సర్వాన్ all, అన్తఃపురచరాన్ those moving in the inner apartment, ఇతి thus, ఉవాచ said.

Intensely grieved to hear those words, Satrughna who was steadfast in his vows said to the inmates of the inner apartment:

తీవ్రముత్పాదితం దుఃఖం భ్రాత్రూణాం మే తథా పితుః.

యయా సేయం నృశంసస్య కర్మణః ఫలమశ్నుతామ్৷৷2.78.11৷৷

యయా by whom, భ్రాత్రూణామ్ of our brothers, మే my, పితుః of father, తీవ్రమ్ intense, దుఃఖమ్ sorrow, ఉత్పాదితమ్ has been caused, సా ఇయమ్ that she, నృశంసస్య of a malicious, కర్మణః actions, ఫలమ్ fruits, అశ్నుతామ్ let her reap.

Let this woman, who caused deep sorrow to our brothers and father, reap the fruit of her malicious actions.

ఏవముక్త్వా తు తేనాశు సఖీజనసమావృతా.

గృహీతా బలవత్కుబ్జా సా తద్గృహమనాదయత్৷৷2.78.12৷৷

ఏవమ్ in this way, ఉక్త్వా having said, ఆశు quickly, తేన by him, బలవత్ forcibly, గృహీతా caught hold of, సఖీజన సమావృతా surrounded by her companions, సా కుబ్జా that hunchback, తత్ గృహమ్ that house, అనాదయత్ reverberated with her cries.

Saying thus, he forcibly caught hold of the hunchback amidst her companions when she filled the house with her cries.

తత స్సుభృశసన్తప్తస్తస్యా స్సర్వ స్సఖీజనః.

క్రుద్ధమాజ్ఞాయ శత్రుఘ్నం విపలాయత సర్వశః৷৷2.78.13৷৷

తతః then, తస్యాః her, సర్వః all, సఖీజనః comapnions, శత్రుఘ్నమ్ of Satrughna, క్రుద్ధమ్ as enraged one, ఆజ్ఞాయ having known, సుభృశ సన్తప్తః extremely pained, సర్వశః in all directions, విపలాయత ran fled.

Perceiving the enraged Satrughna all her companions shook in terror and fled in different directions.

ఆమన్త్రయత కృత్స్న శ్చ తస్యా స్సర్వ స్సఖీజనః.

యథాయం సముపక్రాన్తో నిశ్శేషాం నః కరిష్యతి৷৷2.78.14৷৷

తస్యాః her, సర్వః all, సఖీజనః companions, అయమ్ this man, యథా in this way, సముపక్రాన్తః began, నః us, నిఃశేషామ్ leaving none, కరిష్యతి will do, ఆమన్త్రయత conversed with each other.

All her companions conversed among themselves. The way he began, it looks he will finish all of us.

సానుక్రోశాం వదాన్యాం చ ధర్మజ్ఞాం చ యశస్వినీమ్.

కౌసల్యాం శరణం యామ సా హి నోస్తు ధ్రువా గతిః৷৷2.78.15৷৷

సానుక్రోశామ్ compassionate, వదాన్యాం చ generous, ధర్మజ్ఞామ్ knower of righteousness, యశస్వినీమ్ illustrious, కౌశల్యామ్ Kausalya, శరణం యామ we seek refuge, సా that, నః for us, ధ్రువా surely, గతిః అస్తు is only saviour.

Let us seek refuge under the illustrious Kausalya, who is compassionate, generous, and knower of righteousness. She is our sure saviour.

స చ రోషేణ తామ్రాక్ష శ్శత్రుఘ్న శ్శత్రుతాపనః.

విచకర్ష తదా కుబ్జాం క్రోశన్తీం ధరణీతలే৷৷2.78.16৷৷

రోషేణ in fury, తామ్రాక్షః a man with blodshot eyes, శత్రుతాపనః scorcher of enemies, సః శత్రుఘ్నః that Satrughna, తదా then, క్రోశన్తీమ్ shrieking, కుబ్జామ్ hunchback, ధరణీతలే on the ground, విచకర్ష dragged.

With blood-shot eyes Satrughna, the scorcher of enemies, dragged the shrieking hunchback down the ground in fury.

తస్యా హ్యాకృష్యమాణాయా మన్థరాయా స్తతస్తతః.

చిత్రం బహువిధం భాణ్డం పృథివ్యాం తద్వ్యశీర్యత৷৷2.78.17৷৷

తస్యాః that, మన్థరాయాః Manthara, ఆకృష్యమాణాయాః while being dragged, చిత్రమ్ of various colours, బహువిధమ్ of many kinds, తత్ that, భాణ్డమ్ collection of ornaments, తతస్తతః here and there, వ్యశీర్యత were scattered.

While Manthara was being dragged by Satrughna, the collection of ornaments of many colours and of various kinds worn by her were broken and scattered here and there all over the ground.

తేన భాణ్డేన సంస్తీర్ణం శ్రీమద్రాజనివేశనమ్.

అశోభత తదా భూయః శారదం గగనం యథా৷৷2.78.18৷৷

తేన by that, భాణ్డేన with the collection of ornaments, సంస్తీర్ణమ్ strewn on the ground, శ్రీమద్రాజనివేశనమ్ the resplendent royal palace, తదా then, శారదమ్ autumnal, గగనం యథా like the sky, భూయః greatly, అశోభత shone.

The resplendent royal palace, strewn all over with several ornaments on the ground shone like the autumnal sky (studded with innumerable stars).

స బలీ బలవత్క్రోధాద్గృహీత్వా పురుషర్షభః.

కైకేయీమభినిర్భర్త్స్య బభాషే పరుషం వచః৷৷2.78.19৷৷

బలీ mighty, సః పురుషర్షభః that best of men, క్రోధాత్ out of fury, బలవత్ forcibly, గృహీత్వా
seizing, కైకేయీమ్ Kaikeyi, అభినిర్భర్త్స్య threatening, పరుషమ్ harsh, వచః words, బభాషే spoke.

The mighty and the best of men Satrughna seized with fury, forcibly caught hold of that hunchback and censured Kaikeyi with harsh words.

తైర్వాక్యైః పరుషైర్దుఃఖైః కైకేయీ భృశదుఃఖితా.

శత్రుఘ్నభయసన్త్రస్తా పుత్రం శరణమాగతా৷৷2.78.20৷৷

కైకేయీ Kaikeyi, పరుషైః by harsh, దుఃఖైః by grievous, తైః వాక్యైః with those words, భృశదుఃఖితా extremely distressed, శత్రుఘ్నభయసంత్రస్తా afraid of calamity from Satrughna, పుత్రమ్ son
Bharata, శరణమ్ for protection, ఆగతా reached.

Kaikeyi, deeply distressed at those harsh and grievous words was afraid of Satrughna and sought the protection of her son Bharata.

తం ప్రేక్ష్య భరతః క్రుద్ధం శత్రుఘ్నమిదమబ్రవీత్.

అవధ్యా స్సర్వభూతానాం ప్రమదాః క్షమ్యతామితి৷৷2.78.21৷৷

భరతః Bharata, క్రుద్ధమ్ enraged one, తమ్ శత్రుఘ్నమ్ addressing that Satrugna, ఇదమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ said, ప్రమదాః women, సర్వభూతానామ్ in all beings, అవధ్యాః should not to be killed, క్షమ్యతామ్ may be pardoned.

Bharata, addressing the enraged Satrughna said Of all beings a lady is not to be killed. Pardon her.

హన్యామహమిమాం పాపాం కైకేయీం దుష్టచారిణీమ్.

యది మాం ధార్మికో రామో నాసూయేన్మాతృఘాతకమ్৷৷2.78.22৷৷

ధార్మికః righteous, రామః Rama, మాతృఘాతకమ్ slayer of mother, మామ్ me, న అసూయేద్యది if he were not to accuse me, దుష్టచారిణీమ్ a woman of wicked deeds, పాపామ్ sinful, ఇమాం కైకేయీమ్ this Kaikeyi, అహమ్ I, హన్యామ్ would have killed.

If righteous Rama were not to accuse me of slaying a mother, I would have killed the sinful Kaikeyi of wicked deeds myself.

ఇమామపి హతాం కుబ్జాం యది జానాతి రాఘవః.

త్వాం చ మాం చ హి ధర్మాత్మా నాభిభాషిష్యతే ధ్రువమ్৷৷2.78.23৷৷

ధర్మాత్మా righteous, రాఘవః Rama, ఇమామ్ this, కుబ్జామ్ అపి hunchback also, హతామ్ as slain, జానాతి యది if he comes to know, ధ్రువమ్ surely, త్వాం చ you, మాం చ హి me also, నాభిభాషిష్యతే will never talk (to us).

If righteous Rama comes to know that this hunchback has been slain by us, he will certainly never talk to you or me.

భరతస్య వచశ్శ్రుత్వా శత్రుఘ్నో లక్ష్మణానుజః.

న్యవర్తత తతో రోషాత్తాం ముమోచ చ మన్థరామ్৷৷2.78.24৷৷

లక్ష్మణానుజః Lakshmana's younger brother, శత్రుఘ్నః Satrughna, భరతస్య Bharata's, వచః words, శ్రుత్వా after hearing, తతః then, రోషాత్ from fury, న్యవర్తత restrained, తామ్ that, మన్థరామ్ Manthara, ముమోచ చ also released.

Hearing the words of Bharata, Satrughna, the younger brother of Lakshmana restrained his fury and also released Manthara.

సా పాదమూలే కైకేయ్యా మన్థరా నిపపాత హ.

నిశ్శ్వసన్తీ సుదుఃఖార్తా కృపణం విలలాప చ৷৷2.78.25৷৷

సా మన్థరా that Manthara, కైకేయ్యాః Kaikeyi's, పాదమూలే at her feet, నిపపాత హ fell down, సుదుఃఖార్తా tormented with grief, నిఃశ్వసన్తీ heaving deep sighs, కృపణమ్ wretchedly, విలలాప చ lamented.

Manthara, tormented with grief, fell at the feet of Kaikeyi and began heaving deep sighs.

శత్రుఘ్నవిక్షేపవిమూఢసంజ్ఞాం సమీక్ష్య కుబ్జాం భరతస్య మాతా.

శనైస్సమాశ్వాసయదార్తరూపాం క్రౌఞ్చీం విలగ్నామివ వీక్షమాణామ్৷৷2.78.26৷৷

భరతస్య Bharata's, మాతా mother, శత్రుఘ్నవిక్షేపవిమూఢసంజ్ఞామ్ thrown down by Satrughna and lay sensesless, ఆర్తరూపామ్ anguished, విలగ్నామ్ caught in a net, క్రౌఞ్చీమివ like a female krauncha bird, వీక్షమాణామ్ looking in different directions, కుబ్జామ్ hunchback, సమీక్ష్య having seen, శనైః gently, సమాశ్వాసయత్ consoled.

Seeing the hunchback thrown down by Satrughna and lying senseless and anguished
like a female krauncha bird caught in a net looking in different directions, Kaikeyi gently soothed her.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అయోధ్యాకాణ్డే అష్టసప్తతితమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the seventyeighth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
