Sloka & Translation

[Manthara incites Kaikeyi --Kaikeyi narrates the virtues of Rama--Manthara insinuates that installation of Rama would harm Bharata--hence Rama should be banished and Bharata coronated.]

ಮನ್ಥರಾ ತ್ವಭ್ಯಸೂಯೈನಾಮುತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯಾಭರಣಂ ಚ ತತ್.

ಉವಾಚೇದಂ ತತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಕೋಪದುಃಖಸಮನ್ವಿತಾ৷৷2.8.1৷৷


ಮನ್ಥರಾ ತು as for Manthara, ಏನಾಮ್ about her, ಅಭ್ಯಸೂಯ having been disgusted, ಕೋಪದು:ಖ ಸಮನ್ವಿತಾ filled with rage and sorrow, ತತ್ that, ಆಭರಣಮ್ ornament, ಉತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ having discarded, ತತ: after that, ಇದಮ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ this word, ಉವಾಚ said.

Annoyed with Kaikeyi and filled with rage and sorrow, Manthara discarded the ornament (gifted to her) and said these words:
ಹರ್ಷಂ ಕಿಮಿದಮಸ್ಥಾನೇ ಕೃತವತ್ಯಸಿ ಬಾಲಿಶೇ!.

ಶೋಕಸಾಗರಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಮಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ನಾವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.8.2৷৷


ಬಾಲಿಶೇ O foolish one, ಅಸ್ಥಾನೇ misplaced, ಹರ್ಷಮ್ happiness, ಕೃತವತೀ ಅಸಿ you are displaying, ಇದಮ್ this one, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಶೋಕಸಾಗರಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಮ್ in the midst of the ocean of sorrow, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ about yourself, ನಾವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ do not know.

O foolish woman! why do you display this misplaced happiness, little realising that you are in the midst of an ocean of sorrow?
ಮನಸಾ ಪ್ರಹಸಾಮಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ದೇವಿ! ದುಃಖಾರ್ದಿತಾ ಸತೀ.

ಯಚ್ಛೋಚಿತವ್ಯೇ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಸಿ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯೇದಂ ವ್ಯಸನಂ ಮಹತ್৷৷2.8.3৷৷


ದೇವಿ! O queen, ಮಹತ್ great, ಇದಮ್ this, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ misfortune, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having obtained, ಶೋಚಿತವ್ಯೇ (at a time) one should feel sad, ಯತ್ since, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಅಸಿ you are rejoicing, ದು:ಖಾರ್ದಿತಾ ಸತೀ
although afflicted with grief, ತ್ವಾಮ್ about you, ಮನಸಾ in my mind, ಪ್ರಹಸಾಮಿ I am laughing.

O queen! at a time when this great misfortune has befallen you, you are rejoicing
instead of feeling miserable. I am indeed laughing at you at heart.
ಶೋಚಾಮಿ ದುರ್ಮತಿತ್ವಂ ತೇ ಕಾ ಹಿ ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಾ ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷಯೇತ್.

ಅರೇಸ್ಸಪತ್ನೀಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ವೃದ್ಧಿಂ ಮೃತ್ಯೋರಿವಾಗತಾಮ್৷৷2.8.4৷৷


ತೇ you, ದುರ್ಮತಿತ್ವಮ್ false notion, ಶೋಚಾಮಿ I feel pity, ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಾ any wise woman, ಕಾ who, ಅರೇ: enemy's, ಸಪತ್ನೀ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ of co-wife's son, ವೃದ್ಧಿಮ್ prosperity, ಆಗತಾಮ್ having arrived, ಮೃತ್ಯೋರಿವ like death, ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷಯೇತ್ would rejoice.

I pity your false notion. Will any wise woman rejoice at the prosperity of the son of a co-wife who is like an enemy? This is like (courting) death.
ಭರತಾದೇವ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಸಾಧಾರಣಾದ್ಭಯಮ್.

ತದ್ವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ವಿಷಣ್ಣಾಸ್ಮಿ ಭಯಂ ಭೀತಾದ್ಧಿ ಜಾಯತೇ৷৷2.8.5৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ for Rama, ರಾಜ್ಯಸಾಧಾರಣಾತ್ having equal claim to rule the kingdom, ಭರತಾದೇವ from Bharata only, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ತತ್ that matter, ವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ having thought over, ವಿಷಣ್ಣಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am dejected, ಭೀತಾತ್ from the person who fears, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ಜಾಯತೇ ಹಿ will be born.

Since Bharata and Rama have equal claim to the kingdom, Bharata is a source of fear for Rama. Having thought over this matter, I am dejected. Danger springs from one who is in fear.
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ಹಿ ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸೋ ರಾಮಂ ಸರ್ವಾತ್ಮನಾ ಗತಃ.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಭರತಂ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.8.6৷৷


ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸ: one holding a great bow, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ: Lakshmana, ಸರ್ವಾತ್ಮನಾ with all his heart, ರಾಮಮ್ of Rama, ಗತ: has taken refuge, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನ: ಚ ಅಪಿ and Satrughna also, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ: Lakshmana, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಂ ಯಥಾ like (Rama) a descendant of Kakutstha dynasty, ಭರತಮ್ (has reached)
Bharata.

Lakshmana who wields a great bow has taken refuge with all his heart in Rama a
descendant of Kakutstha dynasty. So does Satrughna in Bharata.
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಸನ್ನಕ್ರಮೇಣಾಪಿ ಭರತಸ್ಯೈವ ಭಾಮಿನಿ!.

ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ರಮೋ ವಿಪ್ರಕೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತಯೋಸ್ತಾವತ್ಕನೀಯಸೋಃ৷৷2.8.7৷৷


ಭಾಮಿನಿ O beautiful woman, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಸನ್ನಕ್ರಮೇಣಾಪಿ in order of birth also, ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ರಮ: succession to the kingdom, ಭರತಸ್ಯೈವ is for Bharata only, ಕನೀಯಸೋ: younger ones, ತಯೋ: ತಾವತ್ for both of them, ವಿಪ್ರಕೃಷ್ಟ: is remote.

O beautiful lady! in order of birth, too, Bharata's right to the throne is just next (to Rama's). While being younger, the chances of the other two (Lakshmana and Satrughna) are remote.
ವಿದುಷಃ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಚಾರಿತ್ರೇ ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾರಿಣಃ.

ಭಯಾತ್ಪ್ರವೇಪೇ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ತೀ ತವಾತ್ಮಜಮ್৷৷2.8.8৷৷


ವಿದುಷ: of the learned, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಚಾರಿತ್ರೇ in the duties of a kshatriya, ಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಸ್ಯ of the competent, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾರಿಣ: one who does what is right at appropriate time, ಭಯಾತ್ out of fear, ತವ ಆತ್ಮಜಮ್ about your son, ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ತೀ while reflecting, ಪ್ರವೇಪೇ I am trembling.

Rama is learned in the duties of a kshatriya. He is wise enough to do what he should at the appropriate time. While reflecting the fate of your son, I am trembling with fear.
ಸುಭಗಾ ಖಲು ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಪುತ್ರೋಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ.

ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇನ ಮಹತಾ ಶ್ವಃ ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ ದ್ವಿಜೋತ್ತಮೈಃ৷৷2.8.9৷৷


ಯಸ್ಯಾ: whose (Kausalya's), ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಶ್ವ: tomorrow, ಪುಷ್ಯೇಣ under Pushya star, ದ್ವಿಜೋತ್ತಮೈ: by eminent brahmins, ಮಹತಾ great, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇನ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ is going to be
coronated, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ such Kausalya, ಸುಭಗಾ ಖಲು is fortunate indeed.

Kausalya whose son is going to be coronated as heir-apparent by eminent
brahmins under Pushya star tomorrow is fortunate, indeed.
ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಂ ಸುಮಹತೀಂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ಪ್ರತೀತಾಂ ತಾಂ ಹತದ್ವಿಷಮ್.

ಉಪಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಯಸಿ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ದಾಸೀವ ತ್ತ್ವಂ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.8.10৷৷


ಸುಮಹತೀಮ್ very great, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ delight, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಮ್ having obtained, ಪ್ರತೀತಾಮ್ renowned, ಹತದ್ವಿಷಮ್ with her enemies destroyed, ತಾಂ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮ್ that Kausalya, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ದಾಸೀವತ್ like an attendant, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿ: with folded palms, ಉಪಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಯಸಿ will serve.

With folded palms like an attendant, you will have to serve that renowned Kausalya who is greatlly delighted by getting rid of her enemies.
ಏವಂ ಚೇತ್ತ್ವಂ ಸಹಾಸ್ಮಾಭಿಸ್ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ.

ಪುತ್ರಶ್ಚ ತವ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಭಾವಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.8.11৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಅಸ್ಮಾಭಿ: ಸಹ along with us, ತಸ್ಯಾ: for her, ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಾ an attendant, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ if you become, ತವ your, ಪುತ್ರಶ್ಚ son also, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ to Rama, ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಭಾವಮ್ slavishness, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ will attain.

If you thus become her attendant along with us, your son will also develop slavishness towards Rama.
ಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ ಖಲು ಭವಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪರಮಾಸ್ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ.

ಅಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ನುಷಾಸ್ತೇ ಭರತಕ್ಷಯೇ৷৷2.8.12৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪರಮಾ: ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯ: all the women, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ: delighted, ಭವಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಖಲು will become indeed, ಭರತಕ್ಷಯೇ with the decline of Bharata, ತೇ your, ಸ್ನುಷಾ: daughters-in-law, ಅಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾ: deprived of happiness, ಭವಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will become.

All the women of Rama's (palace) will be delighted indeed. With the decline of Bharata, your daughters-in-law will be deprived of all happiness.
ತಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತಾಂ ಬ್ರುವನ್ತೀಂ ಮನ್ಥರಾಂ ತತಃ.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯೈವ ಗುಣಾನ್ದೇವೀ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಪ್ರಶಶಂಸ ಹ৷৷2.8.13৷৷


ತತ: after that, ಪರಮ್ highly, ಅಪ್ರೀತಾಮ್ unhappy woman, ಬ್ರುವನ್ತೀಮ್ speaking thus, ತಾಮ್ that, ಮನ್ಥರಾಮ್ to Manthara, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ದೇವೀ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ queen Kaikeyi, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಗುಣಾನೇವ the virtues of Rama, ಪ್ರಶಶಂಸ ಹ praised.

Having seen that morose Manthara speaking thus, Kaikeyi commended the virtues of Rama.
ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೋ ಗುರುಭಿರ್ದಾನ್ತಃ ಕೃತಜ್ಞಸ್ಸತ್ಯವಾಕ್ಛುಚಿಃ.

ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜ್ಞ ಸ್ಸುತೋ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೋ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಮತೋರ್ಹತಿ৷৷2.8.14৷৷


ರಾಮ: Rama, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of righteousness, ಗುರುಭಿ: by elders, ದಾನ್ತ: self-restrained, ಕೃತಜ್ಞ: grateful, ಸತ್ಯವಾಕ್ truthful, ಶುಚಿ: undefiled, ರಾಜ್ಞ: king's, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠ: eldest, ಸುತ: son, ಅತ: therefore, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ as heir-apparent, ಅರ್ಹತಿ is fit for.

Rama knows righteouness. He has been taught self-restraint by elders. He is grateful and truthful. He is undefiled. He is the eldest son of the king. Therefore, he deserves to be the heir-apparent (of the kingdom).
ಭ್ರಾತೃ್ಭೃತ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ದೀರ್ಘಾಯುಃ ಪಿತೃವತ್ಪಾಲಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಸನ್ತಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ ಕಥಂ ಕುಬ್ಜೇ! ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಮಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್৷৷2.8.15৷৷


ದೀರ್ಘಾಯು: blessed with a long life, ಭ್ರಾತೃ್ his brothers, ಭೃತ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ and the servants, ಪಿತೃವತ್ like a father, ಪಾಲಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will rule, ಕುಬ್ಜೇ O hunchback, ರಾಮಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ Rama's coronation, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಕಥಮ್ why, ಸನ್ತಪ್ಯಸೇ are grieving?

Blessed with a long life, Rama will protect his brothers and the servants like a
father. O hunchback, hearing Rama's coronation why are you aggrieved?
ಭರತಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಧ್ರುವಂ ವರ್ಷಶತಾತ್ಪರಮ್.

ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮವಾಪ್ತಾ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ৷৷2.8.16৷৷


ವರ್ಷಶತಾತ್ hundred years, ಪರಮ್ beyond, ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ: best of men, ಭರತಶ್ಚಾಪಿ Bharata also, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹಮ್ pertaining to fathers and grandfathers, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಅವಾಪ್ತಾ will inherit.

After a hundred years of Rama's rule, Bharata, the best of men, will get the kingdom of his ancestors.
ಸಾ ತ್ವಮಭ್ಯುದಯೇ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ ವರ್ತಮಾನೇ ಚ ಮನ್ಥರೇ!.

ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಚ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೇ ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ಪರಿತಪ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.8.17৷৷


ಮನ್ಥರೇ O Manthara, ಸಾ ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಅಭ್ಯುದಯೇ prosperity, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ affained, ವರ್ತಮಾನೇ ಚ at present, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೇ well-being, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will have in future, ಕಿಮರ್ಥಮ್ why, ಪರಿತಪ್ಯಸೇ are you grieving.

Manthara, we have enjoyed prosperity in the past, we are enjoying it now and we will enjoy it in future. Then why are you aggrieved?
ಯಥಾ ಮೇ ಭರತೋ ಮಾನ್ಯಸ್ತಥಾ ಭೂಯೋಪಿ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾತೋತಿರಿಕ್ತಂ ಚ ಸೋನುಶುಶ್ರೂಷತೇ ಹಿ ಮಾಮ್৷৷2.8.18৷৷


ಮೇ to me, ಭರತ: Bharata, ಯಥಾ as, ಮಾನ್ಯ: worthy of consideration, ರಾಘವ: son of the Raghus (Rama), ತಥಾ is so, ಭೂಯ: ಅಪಿ more so, ಸ: he, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾತ: more than Kausalya, ಅತಿರಿಕ್ತಮ್ more, ಅನುಶುಶ್ರೂಷತೇ ಹಿ is serving me.

For me, if Bharata is worthy of consideration Rama is worthier. He serves me even more (scrupulously) than he does Kausalya.
ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಯದಿ ಹಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಭರತಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ತತ್ತದಾ.

ಮನ್ಯತೇ ಹಿ ಯಥಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ತಥಾ ಭ್ರಾತೃಶ್ಚ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.8.19৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಯದಿ if it is his kingdom, ತತ್ that one, ತದಾ then, ಭರತಸ್ಯಾಪಿ Bharata's also, ರಾಘವ: Rama, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ own self, ಯಥಾ as, ಭ್ರಾತೃಶ್ಚ his brothers also, ತಥಾ in that way, ಮನ್ಯತೇ considers.

If the kingdom is Rama's, it is also Bharata's, since Rama regards his brothers as his own self
ಕೈಕೇಯೀವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಮನ್ಥರಾ ಭೃಶದುಃಖಿತಾ.

ದೀರ್ಘಮುಷ್ಣಂ ಚ ವಿನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.8.20৷৷


ಮನ್ಥರಾ Manthara, ಕೈಕೇಯೀವಚನಮ್ Kaikeyi's words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಭೃಶ ದು:ಖಿತಾ very much unhappy, ದೀರ್ಘಮ್ deeply, ಉಷ್ಣಂ ಚ and hot, ವಿನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ after heaving, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ addressing Kaikeyi, ಇದಮ್ this word, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Having heard Kaikeyi's words Manthara was extremely unhappy. Heaving deep, hot sighs she said to Kaikeyi.
ಅನರ್ಥದರ್ಶಿನೀ ಮೌರ್ಖ್ಯಾನ್ನಾತ್ಮಾನಮವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ.

ಶೋಕವ್ಯಸನವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣೇ ಮಜ್ಜನ್ತೀ ದುಃಖಸಾಗರೇ৷৷2.8.21৷৷


ಶೋಕವ್ಯಸನವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣೇ widened with tears and troubles, ದು:ಖಸಾಗರೇ in the ocean of sorrow, ಮಜ್ಜನ್ತೀ while you are sinking, ಮೌರ್ಖ್ಯಾತ್ out of stupidity, ಅನರ್ಥದರ್ಶಿನೀ do not see (your own) well-being, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ (your) own self, ನಾವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ you do not perceive.

You are sinking in the sea of sorrow widened with tears and troubles. But you are stupid enough not to perceive your own well-being.
ಭವಿತಾ ರಾಘವೋ ರಾಜಾ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯಾನು ಯಸ್ಸುತಃ.

ರಾಜವಂಶಾತ್ತು ಕೈಕೇಯಿ ಭರತಃಪರಿಹಾಸ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.8.22৷৷


ರಾಘವ: the scion of the Raghus (Rama), ರಾಜಾ as king, ಭವಿತಾ will become, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ಅನು
suceeding Rama, ಯ: who, ಸುತ: (his) son( will become king), ಕೈಕೇಯಿ O Kaikeyi, ಭರತ: ತು on the contrary Bharata, ರಾಜವಂಶಾತ್ from royal dynasty, ಪರಿಹಾಸ್ಯತೇ will be debarred.

Rama, the scion of the Raghus, will become king. After Rama, his son will suceed him. O Kaikeyi, as for Bharata, he will be debarred from royal succession (altogether).
ನ ಹಿ ರಾಜ್ಞಸ್ಸುತಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತಿ ಭಾಮಿನಿ!.

ಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯಮಾನೇಷು ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಸುಮಹಾನನಯೋ ಭವೇತ್৷৷2.8.23৷৷


ಭಾಮಿನಿ O lovely lady, ರಾಜ್ಞ: king's, ಸುತಾ: sons, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ನ ತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತಿ ಹಿ will not succeed, ಸರ್ವೇಷು of all, ಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯಮಾನೇಷು are installed as kings, ಸುಮಹಾನ್ very great, ಅನಯ: mismanagement, ಭವೇತ್ will happen.

O lovely lady, not all the sons of the king will inherit the kingdom. If all of them are installed as kings, there will be great disorder.
ತಸ್ಮಾಜ್ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೇ ಹಿ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ ರಾಜ್ಯತನ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾಃ.

ಸ್ಥಾಪಯನ್ತ್ಯನವದ್ಯಾಙ್ಗಿ ಗುಣವತ್ಸ್ವಿತರೇಷ್ವಪಿ৷৷2.8.24৷৷


ಅನವದ್ಯಾಙ್ಗಿ O one of beautiful limbs, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for that reason, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾ: kings, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠೇ (either) in the eldest son, ಗುಣವತ್ಸು possessing virtues, ಇತರೇಷ್ವಪಿ or in other sons, ರಾಜ್ಯತನ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ governance of a kingdom, ಸ್ಥಾಪಯನ್ತಿ beston.

O Kaikeyi of beautiful limbs, for that reason kings bestow the governance of the kingdom either on the eldest or on other virtuous sons.
ಅಸಾವತ್ಯನ್ತನಿರ್ಭಗ್ನಸ್ತವ ಪುತ್ರೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಅನಾಥವತ್ಸುಖೇಭ್ಯಶ್ಚ ರಾಜವಂಶಾಚ್ಚ ವತ್ಸಲೇ৷৷2.8.25৷৷


ವತ್ಸಲೇ O dear( Kaikeyi), ತವ your, ಅಸೌ this, ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಅನಾಥವತ್ like an orphan, ಸುಖೇಭ್ಯ: ಚ from comforts, ರಾಜವಂಶಾಚ್ಚ from royal succession, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತನಿರ್ಭಗ್ನ: very much
broken-hearted, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will become.

O (Kaikeyi) dear! cut off from royal succession as well as from its comforts, your son will become totally forlorn and broken-hearted.
ಸಾಹಂ ತ್ವದರ್ಥೇ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ತ್ವಂ ತು ಮಾಂ ನಾವಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಸೇ.

ಸಪತ್ನಿ ವೃದ್ಧೌ ಯಾ ಮೇ ತ್ವಂ ಪ್ರದೇಯಂ ದಾತುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.8.26৷৷


ಸಾ ಅಹಮ್ such as me, ತ್ವದರ್ಥೇ in your interest, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ have come, ತ್ವಂ ತು nevertheless, you, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನಾವಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ do not understand, ಯಾ whom, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸಪತ್ನಿವೃದ್ಧೌ on the occasion of prosperity of your co-wife, ಮೇ to me, ಪ್ರದೇಯಂ ದಾತುಮ್ to confer gift, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ wish.

I am here to serve your interest. Nevertheless you do not understand me and you wish to confer gifts on me on the occasion of the prosperity of your co-wife.
ಧ್ರುವಂ ತು ಭರತಂ ರಾಮಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್.

ದೇಶಾನ್ತರಂ ವಾ ನಯಿತಾ ಲೋಕಾನ್ತರಮಥಾಪಿ ವಾ৷৷2.8.27৷৷


ರಾಮ: Rama, ಅಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್ free from thorns (enemies), ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having obtained, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ದೇಶಾನ್ತರಂ ವಾ out of the country, ಅಥಾಪಿ ವಾ or else, ಲೋಕಾನ್ತರಮ್ to the other world, ನಯಿತಾ he will send, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ this is certain.

Rama, having secured the thornless kingdom, will banish Bharata from the country or else send him to the other world. This is certain.
ಬಾಲ ಏವ ಹಿ ಮಾತುಲ್ಯಂ ಭರತೋ ನಾಯಿತಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ.

ಸನ್ನಿಕರ್ಷಾಚ್ಚ ಸೌಹಾರ್ದಂ ಜಾಯತೇ ಸ್ಥಾವರೇಷ್ವಪಿ৷৷2.8.28৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಭರತ: Bharata, ಬಾಲ: ಏವ even as a child, ಮಾತುಲ್ಯಮ್ maternal uncle's house,
ನಾಯಿತ: ಹಿ has been sent off, ಸನ್ನಿಕರ್ಷಾತ್ from proximity, ಸ್ಥಾವರೇಷ್ವಪಿ even among the immobile (inanimate) objects, ಸೌಹಾರ್ದಮ್ friendliness, ಜಾಯತೇ is created.

Bharata has been sent by you right from his childhood to his maternal uncle's house. Proximity creates friendship even amongst the inanimate objects.
ಭರತಸ್ಯಾಪ್ಯನುವಶಶ್ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋಪಿ ಸಮಂ ಗತಃ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ಹಿ ಯಥಾ ರಾಮಂ ತಥಾಸೌ ಭರತಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.8.29৷৷


ಭರತಸ್ಯ of Bharata, ಅನುವಶ: obedient, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋಪಿ Satrughna also, ಸಮಮ್ along with him, ಗತ: has gone, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ: Lakshmana, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಯಥಾ as, ಅಸೌ this Satrughna, ತಥಾ in that way, ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata.

Satrughna who is obedient to Bharata has followed him. Like Lakshmana who has taken refuge in Rama, he has also resorted to Bharata.
ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಹಿ ದ್ರುಮಃ ಕಶ್ಚಿಚ್ಛೇತ್ತವ್ಯೋ ವನಜೀವಿಭಿಃ.

ಸನ್ನಿಕರ್ಷಾದಿಷೀಕಾಭಿರ್ಮೋಚಿತಃ ಪರಮಾದ್ಭಯಾತ್৷৷2.8.30৷৷


ವನಜೀವಿಭಿ: by those living on the forest, ಛೇತ್ತವ್ಯ: intended for felling, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ one such, ದ್ರುಮ: tree, ಇಷೀಕಾಭಿ: grass known as Ishika (thorny bushes), ಸನ್ನಿಕರ್ಷಾತ್ due to being in the close vicinity, ಪರಮಾತ್ from great, ಭಯಾತ್ from fear, ಮೋಚಿತ: set free, ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಹಿ it is heard.

It is said that a tree intended to be cut down by those living on the forest is let off due to entanglement of a kind of grass known as Ishika (thorny bushes) growing in its vicinity. (If Bharata had been at Ayodhya now, Dasaratha himself would have helped him.
ಗೋಪ್ತಾ ಹಿ ರಾಮಂ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚಾಪಿ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಅಶ್ವಿನೋರಿವ ಸೌಭ್ರಾತ್ರಂ ತಯೋರ್ಲೋಕೇಷು ವಿಶ್ರುತಮ್৷৷2.8.31৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿ: Lakshmana, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಗೋಪ್ತಾ ಹಿ surely going to protect, ರಾಘವ: son of he
Raghus (Rama), ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚಾಪಿ to Lakshmana also, ಅಶ್ವಿನೋ: like of twin 'Ashwins', ಸೌಭ್ರಾತ್ರಂ ಇವ like brotherhood, ತಯೋ: their, ಲೋಕೇಷು in the worlds, ವಿಶ್ರೃತಮ್ is renowned.

Just as Lakshmana protects Rama, Rama protects Lakshmana. Their brotherhood is renowned in the world like that of the Ashwins.
ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ ರಾಮಃ ಪಾಪಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ರಾಮಸ್ತು ಭರತೇ ಪಾಪಂ ಕುರ್ಯಾದಿತಿ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ৷৷2.8.32৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ to Lakshmana, ಪಾಪಮ್ harm, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ even little, ನ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ will not do, ಭರತೇ ತು as to but in respect of Bharata, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಪಾಪಮ್ harm, ಕುರ್ಯಾತ್ will do, ಇತಿ in this, ನ ಸಂಶಯ: there is no doubt.

Rama will do no harm to Lakshmana. As for Bharata, Rama will doubtless do him harm.
ತಸ್ಮಾದ್ರಾಜಗೃಹಾದೇವ ವನಂ ಗಚ್ಛತು ತೇ ಸುತಃ.

ಏತದ್ಧಿ ರೋಚತೇ ಮಹ್ಯಂ ಭೃಶಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಹಿತಂ ತವ৷৷2.8.33৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ತೇ ಸುತ: your son, ರಾಜಗೃಹಾದೇವ from Rajagriha (the place of Bharata's maternal uncle) straightaway, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಗಚ್ಛತು let go, ಏತತ್ that only, ಮಹ್ಯಮ್ for me, ರೋಚತೇ ಹಿ alone is pleasing, ತವಾಪಿ ಚ for you also, ಭೃಶಮ್ highly, ಹಿತಮ್ beneficial.

Therefore let your son go to the forest straight from his uncle's palace only. That alone will please me. For you also this is highly beneficial.
ಏವಂ ತೇ ಜ್ಞಾತಿಪಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ ಶ್ರೇಯಶ್ಚೈವ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಯದಿ ಚೇದ್ಭರತೋ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಪಿತ್ರ್ಯಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.8.34৷৷


ಭರತ: Bharata, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ righteously, ಪಿತ್ರ್ಯಮ್ relating to his father,ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಅವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ ಯದಿ if he secures, ಏವಂ ಚೇತ್ if it happens that way, ತೇ to you, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಪಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ ಚೈವ and also to your relations, ಶ್ರೇಯ: welfare, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will happen.

If Bharata secures the ancestral kingdom righteously, it will bring welfare to you and to your relations also.
ಸ ತೇ ಸುಖೋಚಿತೋ ಬಾಲೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಸಹಜೋ ರಿಪುಃ.

ಸಮೃದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಸ್ಯ ನಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥೋ ಜೀವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಕಥಂ ವಶೇ৷৷2.8.35৷৷


ತೇ your, ಸುಖೋಚಿತ: accustomed to comforts, ಸ: ಬಾಲ: that young Bharata, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of Rama, ಸಹಜ:ರಿಪು: is born enemy, ನಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥ: deprived of all wealth, ಸಮೃದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಸ್ಯ of prosperous (Rama), ವಶೇ under the control, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಜೀವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will live.

Your son, that young Bharata, is accustomed to comforts. He is a born enemy of Rama. How will he, deprived of all wealth, live under the control of Rama?
ಅಭಿದ್ರುತಮಿವಾರಣ್ಯೇ ಸಿಂಹೇನ ಗಜಯೂಥಪಮ್.

ಪ್ರಚ್ಛಾದ್ಯಮಾನಂ ರಾಮೇಣ ಭರತಂ ತ್ರಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.8.36৷৷


ಅರಣ್ಯೇ in the forest, ಸಿಂಹೇನ by a lion, ಅಭಿದ್ರುತಮ್ being attacked, ಗಜಯೂಥಪಮ್ಇವ like the leader of the elephant herd, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಪ್ರಚ್ಛಾದ್ಯಮಾನಮ್ being overpowered, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ತ್ರಾತುಮ್ to save, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it behoves you.

Like the leader of an elephant-herd attacked by a lion in the forest, Bharata is going to be oppressed by Rama. You should save him.
ದರ್ಪಾನ್ನಿರಾಕೃತಾ ಪೂರ್ವಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯವತ್ತಯಾ.

ರಾಮಮಾತಾ ಸಪತ್ನೀ ತೇ ಕಥಂ ವೈರಂ ನ ಶಾತಯೇತ್৷৷2.8.37৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯವತ್ತಯಾ being fortunate (being favourite wife of your husband), ದರ್ಪಾತ್ from pride, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ earlier, ನಿರಾಕೃತಾ was slighted, ತೇ your, ಸಪತ್ನೀ co-wife (Kausalya), ರಾಮಮಾತಾ Rama's mother, ವೈರಮ್ grudge, ಕಥಮ್ how, ನ ಶಾತಯೇತ್ will not retaliate.

Being fortunate (being the favourite wife of your husband) you slighted your co-wife
earlier with pride. How will she, Rama's mother (Kausalya) remain without retaliating?
ಯದಾ ಹಿ ರಾಮಃ ಪೃಥಿವೀಮವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯತಿ

ಪ್ರಭೂತರತ್ನಾಕರಶೈಲಪತ್ತನಾಮ್.

ತದಾ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಸ್ಯಶುಭಂ ಪರಾಭವಂ

ಸಹೈವ ದೀನಾ ಭರತೇನ ಭಾಮಿನಿ!৷৷2.8.38৷৷


ಭಾಮಿನಿ O lovely lady, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಯದಾ when, ಪ್ರಭೂತರತ್ನಾಕರಶೈಲಪತ್ತನಾಮ್ with its oceans, mountains and towns, ಪೃಥಿವೀಮ್ to this earth, ಅವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯತಿ secures, ತದಾ then, ಭರತೇನ ಸಹೈವ along with Bharata, ದೀನಾ become miserable, ಅಶುಭಮ್ disgrace, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಸಿ will attain.

O lovely lady! when Rama becomes the lord of this earth with its oceans, mountains and cities, then along with Bharata you will become miserable and fall into disgrace.
ಯದಾ ಹಿ ರಾಮಃ ಪೃಥಿವೀಮವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯತಿ

ಧ್ರುವಂ ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟೋ ಭರತೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಅತೋ ಹಿ ಸಞ್ಚಿನ್ತಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಾತ್ಮಜೇ

ಪರಸ್ಯ ಚೈವಾದ್ಯ ವಿವಾಸಕಾರಣಮ್৷৷2.8.39৷৷


ರಾಮ: Rama, ಯದಾ ಹಿ when, ಪೃಥಿವೀಮ್ this earth, ಅವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯತಿ obtains, ಭರತ: Bharata, ಧ್ರೃವಮ್ certainly, ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟ: ruined, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will become, ಅತ: for that reason, ಆತ್ಮಜೇ your son, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಅದ್ಯೈವ right now, ಪರಸ್ಯ enemy Rama's, ವಿವಾಸಕಾರಣಮ್ means of banishment, ಸಞ್ಚಿನ್ತಯ think over.

When Rama obtains this earth, Bharata will be certainly ruined. Therefore, right now think of the kingdom for your son and the means of banishment for your enemy, Rama.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
