Then surveyors, experts in measurment, energetic and zealous labourers, excavators, engineers, skilled workers, architects, craftsmen, carpenters, road-levellers, wood-cutters, well-diggers, whitewashers, basket-makers, competent supervisors were sent in advance.

ಅಶೋಭತ ಮಹಾವೇಗಸ್ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ಪರ್ವಣಿ৷৷2.80.4৷৷


ಹರ್ಷಾತ್ with joy, ತಮ್ ಉದ್ದೇಶಮ್ to the appointed region, ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ proceeding, ಸಃ that, ವಿಪುಲಃ multitude, ಜನೌಘಃ people, ಪರ್ವಣಿ on full-moon day, ಮಹಾವೇಗಃ with great speed, ಸಮುದ್ರಃ ಇವ like
an ocean, ಅಶೋಭತ shone.

Like a swollen ocean on a full-moon day the multitude of people proceeded joyfully with great speed to the appointed place.
ತೇ ಸ್ವವಾರಂ ಸಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ವರ್ತ್ಮಕರ್ಮಣಿ ಕೋವಿದಾಃ.

ಕರಣೈರ್ವಿವಿಧೋಪೇತೈಃ ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥಿರೇ৷৷2.80.5৷৷


ವರ್ತ್ಮಕರ್ಮಣಿ in the construction of roads, ಕೋವಿದಾಃ skilled, ತೇ those, ವಿವಿಧೋಪೇತೈಃ with different kinds of, ಕರಣೈಃ tools, ಸ್ವವಾರಮ್ their own group, ಸಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ taking up the place, ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ ahead, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥಿರೇ departed.

Those groups who were skilled in the construction of roads took up their places with every kind of tool and departed ahead of others.
ಲತಾವಲ್ಲೀ ಶ್ಚ ಗುಲ್ಮಾಂಶ್ಚ ಸ್ಥಾಣೂನಶ್ಮನ ಏವ ಚ.

ಜನಾಯಾಂಚಕ್ರಿರೇ ಮಾರ್ಗಂ ಛಿನ್ದನ್ತೋ ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ದ್ರುಮಾನ್৷৷2.80.6৷৷


ಲತಾವಲ್ಲೀಃ ಚ creepers, ಗುಲ್ಮಾಂಶ್ಚ shrubs, ಸ್ಥಾಣೂನ್ branchless trees, ಅಶ್ಮನ ಏವ ಚ boulders, ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ various, ದ್ರುಮಾನ್ trees, ಛಿನ್ದನ್ತ hewing off, ಮಾರ್ಗಮ್ way, ಜನಾಯಾಂಚಕ್ರಿರೇ paved by the (king's) men.

Clearing and cutting branches of various trees and creepers, shrubs, plants branchless trees and hewing boulders, the road was paved by the king's men.
ಅವೃಕ್ಷೇಷು ಚ ದೇಶೇಷು ಕೇಚಿದ್ವೃಕ್ಷಾನರೋಪಯನ್.

ಕೇಚಿತ್ಕುಠಾರೈಷ್ಟಙ್ಕೈಶ್ಚ ದಾತ್ರೈಶ್ಚಿನ್ದನ್ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ಕ್ವಚಿತ್৷৷2.80.7৷৷


ಕೇಚಿತ್ some of them, ಅವೃಕ್ಷೇಷು where there were no trees, ದೇಶೇಷು in places, ವೃಕ್ಷಾನ್ saplings, ಅರೋಪಯನ್ planted, ಕೇಚಿತ್ some, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ here and there, ಕುಠಾರೈಃ with axes, ಟಙ್ಕೈಶ್ಚ with hatchets, ದಾತ್ರೈಃ ಚ with sickles, ಛಿನ್ದನ್ severing.

Some of them, planted saplings in places where there were none, while some others severed trees here and there with axes, hatchets and sickles.
ಅಪರೇ ವೀರಣಸ್ತಮ್ಭಾನ್ಬಲಿನೋ ಬಲವತ್ತರಾಃ.

ವಿಧಮನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ ದುರ್ಗಾಣಿ ಸ್ಥಲಾನಿ ಚ ತತಸ್ತತಃ৷৷2.80.8৷৷


ಬಲವತ್ತರಾಃ stronger men, ಅಪರೇ some others, ಬಲಿನಃ strong-rooted, ವೀರಣಸ್ತಮ್ಭಾನ್ tufts of fragrant grass, ವಿಧಮನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ removed, ತತಸ್ತತಃ here and there, ದುರ್ಗಾಣಿ impassable terrains, ಸ್ಥಲಾನಿ were made even.

Some other stronger men, plucked the strong-rooted tufts of fragrant grass. Here and there they made impassable terrains even.
ಅಪರೇಪೂರಯನ್ಕೂಪಾನ್ಪಾಂಸುಭಿ ಶ್ಶ್ವಭ್ರಮಾಯತಮ್.

ನಿಮ್ನಭಾಗಾನ್ಸ್ತತಃ ಕೇಚಿತ್ಸಮಾನ್ಶ್ಚಕ್ರು ಸ್ಸಮನ್ತತಃ৷৷2.80.9৷৷


ಅಪರೇ some others, ಕೂಪಾನ್ wells, ಆಯತಮ್ wide, ಶ್ವಭ್ರಮ್ chasm, ಪಾಂಸುಭಿಃ with loose soil, ಅಪೂರಯನ್ filled, ತತಃ thereafter, ಕೇಚಿತ್ some, ನಿಮ್ನಭಾಗಾನ್ low level grounds, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ on all sides, ಸಮಾನ್ evenly, ಚಕ್ರುಃ made.

Some filled wells and chasms with loose soil, while others made low level grounds plain and wide on all sides.
ಬಬನ್ಧುರ್ಬನ್ಧನೀಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ಕ್ಷೋದ್ಯಾನ್ಸಞ್ಚುಕ್ಷುದುಸ್ತದಾ.

ಬಿಭಿದುರ್ಭೇದನೀಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ತಾಂಸ್ತಾನ್ದೇಶಾನ್ನರಾ ಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.80.10৷৷


ತದಾ then, ನರಾಃ people, ಬನ್ಧನೀಯಾನ್ required to be bridged, ತಾಂಸ್ತಾನ್ at such, ದೇಶಾನ್ places, ಬಬನ್ಧು: bridged, ಕ್ಷೋದ್ಯಾನ್ required crushing, ಸಞ್ಚುಕ್ಷುದುಃ pulverised, ಭೇದನೀಯಾನ್ ಚ required to be split open, ಬಿಭಿದುಃ broke them.

People threw bridges at places that needed to be bridged. They pulverised stones that obstructed the path and split open big stones to drain out water.
ಅಚಿರೇಣೈವ ಕಾಲೇನ ಪರಿವಾಹಾನ್ಬಹೂದಕಾನ್.

ಚಕ್ರುರ್ಬಹುವಿಧಾಕಾರಾನ್ ಸಾಗರಪ್ರತಿಮಾನ್ಬಹೂನ್৷৷2.80.11৷৷


ಅಚಿರೇಣಕಾಲೇನೈವ in a short time, ಬಹೂದಕಾನ್ having large volumes of water, ಬಹುವಿಧಾಕಾರಾನ್ of different shapes, ಸಾಗರಪ್ರತಿಮಾನ್ like the sea, ಬಹೂನ್ many, ಪರಿವಾಹಾನ್ water courses, ಚಕ್ರುಃ constructed.

In a short time they constructed many water reservoirs of different shapes capable of holding large volumes of water like the sea.
ನಿರ್ಜಲೇಷು ಚ ದೇಶೇಷು ಖಾನಯಾಮಾಸುರುತ್ತಮಾನ್.

ಉದಪಾನಾನ್ಬಹುವಿಧಾನ್ವೇದಿಕಾಪರಿಮಣ್ಡಿತಾನ್৷৷2.80.12৷৷


ನಿರ್ಜಲೇಷು where there was no water, ದೇಶೇಷು in places, ಉತ್ತಮಾನ್ best, ಬಹುವಿಧಾನ್ various, ವೇದಿಕಾಪರಿಮಣ್ಡಿತಾನ್ surrounded by circular dykes, ಉದಪಾನಾನ್ drinking water wells, ಖಾನಯಾಮಾಸುಃ were dug.

In arid places, various good drinking-water-wells surrounded by dykes were dug.
ಸಸುಧಾಕುಟ್ಟಿಮತಲಃ ಪ್ರಪುಷ್ಪಿತಮಹೀರುಹಃ.

ಮತ್ತೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟ ದ್ವಿಜಗಣಃ ಪತಾಕಾಭಿರಲಙ್ಕೃತಃ৷৷2.80.13৷৷

ಚನ್ದನೋದಕಸಂಸಿಕ್ತೋ ನಾನಾಕುಸುಮಭೂಷಿತಃ.

ಬಹ್ವಶೋಭತ ಸೇನಾಯಾಃ ಪನ್ಥಾ ಸ್ಸುರಪಥೋಪಮಃ৷৷2.80.14৷৷


ಸಸುಧಾಕುಟ್ಟಿಮತಲಃ surface decorated with mosaic, ಪ್ರಪುಷ್ಪಿತಮಹೀರುಹಃ avenue lined with blossoming trees, ಮತ್ತೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟ ದ್ವಿಜಗಣಃ with flocks of birds intoxicated with singing, ಪತಾಕಾಭಿಃ with banners, ಅಲಙ್ಕೃತಃ decorated, ಚನ್ದನೋದಕಸಂಸಿಕ್ತಃ sprinkled with sandal water, ನಾನಾಕುಸುಮಭೂಷಿತಃ embellished with various kinds of flowers, ಸೇನಾಯಾಃ army's ಸುರಪಥೋಪಮಃ like the path of the gods, (ಸಃ) ಪನ್ಥಾಃ that highway, ಬಹು brilliantly, ಅಶೋಭತ shone.

The highway for the army was paved smooth, with its surface decorated with mosaic. It was lined with blossoming trees with flocks of birds intoxicated with singing. It was decked with banners and sprinkled with sandal water and a strewn with flowers of every kind. Like the path of gods, the highway shone with brilliance.
ಆಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯಾಥ ಯಥಾಜ್ಞಪ್ತಿ ಯುಕ್ತಾಸ್ತೇಧಿಕೃತಾ ನರಾಃ.

ರಮಣೀಯೇಷು ದೇಶೇಷು ಬಹುಸ್ವಾದುಫಲೇಷು ಚ৷৷2.80.15৷৷

ಯೋ ನಿವೇಶಸ್ತ್ವಭಿಪ್ರೇತೋ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಭೂಯಸ್ತಂ ಶೋಭಯಾಮಾಸುರ್ಭೂಷಾಭಿರ್ಭೂಷಣೋಪಮಮ್৷৷2.80.16৷৷


ಅಧಿಕೃತಾ authorised, ತೇ ನರಾಃ those persons, ಯಥಾಜ್ಞಪ್ತಿ in accordance with the orders (of Bharata), ಯುಕ್ತಾಃ performing their work, ಆಜ್ಞಪ್ಯ issued orders (to the artisans), ಅಥ thereafter, ಬಹುಸ್ವಾದುಫಲೇಷು with varieties of sweet fruits, ರಮಣೀಯೇಷು lovely, ದೇಶೇಷು places, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of great, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata, ಯಃ ನಿವೇಶಃ resting-place, ಅಭಿಪ್ರೇತಃ selected, ತಮ್ that place, ಭೂಷಾಭಿಃ with ornaments, ಭೂಷಣೋಪಮಮ್ like ornaments , ಭೂಯಃ well, ಶೋಭಯಾಮಾಸುಃ shone.

Those authorised ordered the artisans to perform their respective tasks. Thereafter, they selected lovely tracts of land filled with trees bearing varieties of sweet fruits as resting-place for great Bharata and decorated them so splendidly, that they looked like ornaments themseleves.
ನಕ್ಷತ್ರೇಷು ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತೇಷು ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇಷು ಚ ತದ್ವಿದಃ.

ನಿವೇಶಾನ್ ಸ್ಥಾಪಯಾಮಾಸುರ್ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.80.17৷৷


ತದ್ವಿದಃ men well versed in the study of planetary positions relating to auspicious constellations and auspicious time (astrologers), ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತೇಷು at auspicious, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರೇಷು in the constellation, ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇಷು at auspicious time, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ high-souled, ಭರತಸ್ಯ for Bharata, ನಿವೇಶಾನ್ rest-place, ಸ್ಥಾಪಯಾಮಾಸುಃ established.

Men well-versed in the study of planetary positions relating to auspicious constellations and auspicious times arranged different resting-places at different times
during the sojourn of great Bharata.

ತತ್ರೇನ್ದ್ರಕೀಲಪ್ರತಿಮಾಃ ಪ್ರತೋಲೀವರಶೋಭಿತಾಃ৷৷2.80.18৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಮಾಲಾವಿತತಾ ಸ್ಸೌಧಪ್ರಾಕಾರಸಂವೃತಾಃ.

ಪತಾಕಾಶೋಭಿತಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಸುನಿರ್ಮಿತಮಹಾಪಥಾಃ৷৷2.80.19৷৷

ವಿಸರ್ಪದ್ಭಿರಿವಾಕಾಶೇ ವಿಟಙ್ಕಾಗ್ರವಿಮಾನಕೈಃ.

ತತ್ರ there, ಬಹುಪಾಂಸುಚಯಾಶ್ಚಪಿ heaps of sand, ಪರಿಖಾಪರಿವಾರಿತಾಃ encircled by moats, ಇನ್ದ್ರಕೀಲಪ್ರತಿಮಾಃ comparable to mount Indrakeela, ಪ್ರತೋಲೀವರಶೋಭಿತಾಃ adorned with broad highways, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಮಾಲಾವಿತತಾಃ lined with mansions, ಸೌಧಪ್ರಾಕಾರಸಂವೃತಾಃ surrounded by walls, ಪತಾಕಾಶೋಭಿತಾಃ decorated with flags, ಸುನಿರ್ಮಿತ ಮಹಾಪಥಾಃ with well-built, broad thoroughfares, ತೇ ನಿವೇಶಾಃ those residences, ಆಕಾಶೇ in the sky, ವಿಸರ್ಪದ್ಭಿರಿವ like one spreading, ಸಮುಚ್ಛ್ರಿತೈಃ tall, ವಿಟಙ್ಕಾಗ್ರವಿಮಾನಕೈಃ with the peaks of mansions, ಶಕ್ರಪುರೋಪಮಾಃ like the abode of Indra, ಬಭುಃ shone.

They heaped sand and dug moats around the resting-place. It was adorned with well-built highways and broad thoroughfares, lined with mansions surrounded by walls as high as mount Indrakeela. The peaks of those tall residences decorated with flags which looked as if spreading into the sky. (Thus the resting-place) shone like the abode of Indra.
ಜಾಹ್ನವೀಂ ತು ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ವಿವಿಧದ್ರುಮಕಾನನಾಮ್.

ಶೀತಲಾಮಲಪಾನೀಯಾಂ ಮಹಾಮೀನಸಮಾಕುಲಾಮ್৷৷2.80.21৷৷


ವಿವಿಧದ್ರುಮಕಾನನಾಮ್ with groves of various trees, ಶೀತಲಾಮಲಪಾನೀಯಾಮ್ with cool and limpid waters, ಮಹಾಮೀನಸಮಾಕುಲಾಮ್ abounding in large fishes, ಜಾಹ್ನವೀಮ್ the river Ganga, ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ having reached.

The reached Ganga with its cool and limpid waters abounding in large fishes, its bank lined with groves of various trees.
ಸಚನ್ದ್ರತಾರಾಗಣಮಣ್ಡಿತಂ ಯಥಾ ನಭಃ ಕ್ಷಪಾಯಾಮಮಲಂ ವಿರಾಜತೇ.

ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಮಾರ್ಗಸ್ಸ ತಥಾ ವ್ಯರಾಜತ ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ರಮ್ಯಃ ಶುಭಶಿಲ್ಪಿನಿರ್ಮಿತಃ৷৷2.80.22৷৷


ಸಚನ್ದ್ರತಾರಾಗಣಮಣ್ಡಿತಮ್ decorated with the Moon and stars, ಅಮಲಮ್ clear, ನಭಃ sky, ಕ್ಷಪಾಯಾಮ್ in the night, ಯಾಥಾ how, ವಿರಾಜತೇ shines, ಕ್ರಮೇಣ orderly manner, ಶುಭಶಿಲ್ಪಿನಿರ್ಮಿತಃ constructed by eminent craftsmen, ರಮ್ಯಃ lovely, ಸಃ that, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಮಾರ್ಗಃ royal road, ತಥಾ that way, ವ್ಯರಾಜತ shone.

The lovely royal road constructed in an orderly fashion by eminent craftsmen looked splendid like the clear sky decorated with by the Moon and clusters of stars.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಶೀತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the eightieth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
