[Bharata addresses the assembly --- declines Vasistha's plea to accept the throne --- gets ready to depart for the forest with the citizens of Ayodhya.]

ತಾಮಾರ್ಯಗಣಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾಂ ಭರತಃ ಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಾಂ ಸಭಾಮ್.

ದದರ್ಶ ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರೋ ನಿಶಾಮಿವ৷৷2.82.1৷৷


ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ sagacious, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಆರ್ಯಗಣಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾಮ್ full of honourable members, ತಾಂ ಸಭಾಮ್ that assembly hall, ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರಃ full-moon, ಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಾಮ್ stretching forth, ನಿಶಾಮಿವ like night, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

Sagacious Bharata beheld that assembly hall filled with honourable members, like the full-moon beholds the night stretching forth (with stars).
ಆಸನಾನಿ ಯಥಾನ್ಯಾಯಮಾರ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ವಿಶತಾಂ ತದಾ.

ವಸ್ತ್ರಾಙ್ಗರಾಗಪ್ರಭಯಾ ದ್ಯೋತಿತಾ ಸಾ ಸಭೋತ್ತಮಾ৷৷2.82.2৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಉತ್ತಮಾ august, ಸಾ ಸಭಾ that assembly, ಯಥಾನ್ಯಾಯಮ್ according to their rank, ಆಸನಾನಿ seats, ವಿಶತಾಮ್ entered, ಆರ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ honourable members', ವಸ್ತ್ರಾಙ್ಗರಾಗಪ್ರಭಯಾ with the brilliance of their apparels and fragrance of unguents, ದ್ಯೋತಿತಾ looked splendid.

When the seats were occupied by the honourable members according to their rank, that august assembly looked splendid with the brilliance of their apparels and fragrance of unguents.
ಸಾ ವಿದ್ವಜ್ಜನಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾ ಸಭಾ ಸುರುಚಿರಾ ತದಾ.

ಅದೃಶ್ಯತ ಘನಾಪಾಯೇ ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರೇವ ಶರ್ವರೀ৷৷2.82.3৷৷


ತದಾ then, ವಿದ್ವಜ್ಜನಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾ filled with learned people, ಸುರುಚಿರಾ most splendid, ಸಾ ಸಭಾ that assembly, ಘನಾಪಾಯೇ after the departure of rains, ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರಾ with full-moon, ಶರ್ವರೀವ like the
night, ಅದೃಶ್ಯತ looked.

The most splendid assembly filled with learned people looked brilliant like the night with the autumnal full-moon.
ರಾಜ್ಞಸ್ತು ಪ್ರಕೃತೀ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ಸ್ಸಮಗ್ರಾಃ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್.

ಇದಂ ಪುರೋಹಿತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭರತಂ ಮೃದು ಚಾಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.82.4৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ knower of righteousness, ಪುರೋಹಿತಃ the chief priest, ಸಮಗ್ರಾಃ complete, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king's, ಪ್ರಕೃತೀಃ ministers, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಮೃದು in a gentle way, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

The chief priest Vasistha, knower of righteousness, looked at all the ministers present and addressed Bharata in a gentle voice.
ತಾತ! ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥ ಸ್ಸ್ವರ್ಗತೋ ಧರ್ಮಮಾಚರನ್.

ಧನಧಾನ್ಯವತೀಂ ಸ್ಫೀತಾಂ ಪ್ರದಾಯ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ತವ৷৷2.82.5৷৷


ತಾತ! dear child, ರಾಜಾ king, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ righteousness, ಆಚರನ್ while following, ಧನಧಾನ್ಯವತೀಮ್ abounding in wealth and grains, ಸ್ಫೀತಾಮ್ vast, ಪೃಥಿವೀಮ್ kingdom, ತವ to you, ಪ್ರದಾಯ having given, ಸ್ವರ್ಗತಃ attained heaven.

O dear child! following the righteous path king Dasaratha conferred on you this vast kingdom abounding in wealth and grains before attaining heaven.
ರಾಮಸ್ತಥಾ ಸತ್ಯಧೃತಿಸ್ಸತಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಮನುಸ್ಮರನ್.

ನಾಜಹಾತ್ಪಿತುರಾದೇಶಂ ಶಶೀ ಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸ್ನಾಮಿವೋದಿತಃ৷৷2.82.6৷৷


ತಥಾ and, ಸತ್ಯಧೃತಿಃ abiding in truth, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸತಾಮ್ of the virtuous, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ righteousness, ಅನುಸ್ಮರನ್ remembering, ಉದಿತಃ rising, ಶಶೀ moon, ಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸ್ನಾಮಿವ like moon light, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಆದೇಶಮ್ command, ನಾಜಹಾತ್ did not abandon.

Abiding in truth, remembering the righteous ways of virtuous men just as the rising Moon does not leave its beams, Rama too did not move away from his father's command.
ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಚ ತೇ ದತ್ತಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ನಿಹತಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್.

ತದ್ಭುಙ್ಕ್ಷ್ವ ಮುದಿತಾಮಾತ್ಯಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವಾಭಿಷೇಚಯ৷৷2.82.7৷৷


ಪಿತ್ರಾ by your father, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಚ by your brother also, ನಿಹತಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್ all thorns removed, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ತೇ to you, ದತ್ತಮ್ has been given, ಮುದಿತಾಮಾತ್ಯಃ with ministers pleased, ತತ್ that king dom, ಭುಙ್ಕ್ಷ್ವ enjoy, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ quickly, ಅಭಿಷೇಚಯ be consecrated.

The kingdom free from obstacles has been passed on to you by your father and brother. Get yourself coronated quickly and enjoy it along with your cheerful ministers.
ಉದೀಚ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರತೀಚ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಚ ದಾಕ್ಷಿಣಾತ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ಕೇವಲಾಃ.

ಕೋಟ್ಯಾಪರಾನ್ತಾಸ್ಸಾಮುದ್ರಾರತ್ನಾನ್ಯಭಿಹರನ್ತುತೇ৷৷2.82.8৷৷


ಉದೀಚ್ಯಾಃ kings from the north, ಪ್ರತೀಚ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಚ from the west, ದಾಕ್ಷಿಣಾತ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ from the south, ಕೇವಲಾಃ solely, ಅಪರಾನ್ತಾಃ kings of the bordering kingdoms, ಸಾಮುದ್ರಾಃ sea-traders, ತೇ they, ಕೋಟ್ಯಾ crores in number, ರತ್ನಾನಿ gems, ಅಭಿಹರನ್ತು may offer to you as gift.

Let kings from the north, the west, the south, the bordering kingdoms, and the sea-traders offer you crores of gems as gifts.
ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭರತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಶೋಕೇನಾಭಿಪರಿಪ್ಲುತಃ.

ಜಗಾಮ ಮನಸಾ ರಾಮಂ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೋ ಧರ್ಮಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾ৷৷2.82.9৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of duty, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತತ್ that, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಶೋಕೇನ with distress, ಅಭಿಪರಿಪ್ಲುತಃ overwhelmed, ಧರ್ಮಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾ wishing to abide by righteousness, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಮನಸಾ with mind, ಜಗಾಮ reached.

On hearing those words, Bharata who knew his duty was overwhelmed with distress
and, resolved to abide by righteousness, reached Rama through his mind (thought of Rama).
ಸಬಾಷ್ಪಕಲಯಾ ವಾಚಾ ಕಲಹಂಸಸ್ವರೋ ಯುವಾ.

ವಿಲಲಾಪ ಸಭಾಮಧ್ಯೇ ಜಗರ್ಹೇ ಚ ಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್৷৷2.82.10৷৷


ಕಲಹಂಸಸ್ವರಃ voice resembling the melodious cackle of a swan, ಯುವಾ the young man, ಸಬಾಷ್ಪಕಲಯಾ voice choked with sobs, ವಾಚಾ words, ಸಭಾಮಧ್ಯೇ in the midst of the assembly, ವಿಲಲಾಪ lamented, ಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್ to the family priest Vasistha, ಜಗರ್ಹೇ ಚ reproached.

Young Bharata with the melodious voice of a swan, choked with tears, lamenting in the assembly, reproached the family priest Vasistha, saying:
ಚರಿತಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯಸ್ಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾಸ್ನಾತಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ.

ಧರ್ಮೇ ಪ್ರಯತಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಕೋ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಮದ್ವಿಧೋ ಹರೇತ್৷৷2.82.11৷৷


ಚರಿತಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯಸ್ಯ one who practised brahmacharaya, ವಿದ್ಯಾಸ್ನಾತಸ್ಯ who is well-versed in all branches of learning, ಧೀಮತಃ of the sagacious, ಧರ್ಮೇ in righteousness, ಪ್ರಯತಮಾನಸ್ಯ endeavouring, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಮದ್ವಿಧಃ a man like me, ಕಃ who, ಹರೇತ್ will seize?

Would any man seize this kingdom which rightfully belongs to sagacious Rama, who practises brahmacharya, who is well-versed in all branches of learning and who endeavours to protect righteousness?
ಕಥಂ ದಶರಥಾಜ್ಜಾತೋ ಭವೇದ್ರಾಜ್ಯಾಪಹಾರಕಃ.

ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚಾಹಂ ಚ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಂ ವಕ್ತುಮಿಹಾರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.82.12৷৷


ದಶರಥಾತ್ from Dasaratha, ಜಾತಃ born, ರಾಜ್ಯಾಪಹಾರಕಃ usurper of the kingdom, ಕಥಮ್ ಭವೇತ್ how will he become?, ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚ kingdom, ಅಹಂ ಚ I also, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ belong to Rama, ಇಹ in this matter, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ truth, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it behoves you.

How can any usurper of the kingdom be born of Dasaratha? Or, how would any
progeny of Dasaratha become the usurper of the kingdom? I and the kingdom, both belong to Rama. You should tell the truth about this.
ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠ ಶ್ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಶ್ಚ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ದಿಲೀಪನಹುಷೋಪಮಃ.

ಲಬ್ಧುಮರ್ಹತಿ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥೋ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ದಶರಥೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.82.13৷৷


ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಃ eldest, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ ಚ and also eminent, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous one, ದಿಲೀಪನಹುಷೋಪಮಃ comparable to Dilipa and Nahusha, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ Rama of Kakutstha dynasty, ದಶರಥೋ ಯಥಾ like Dasaratha, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಲಬ್ಧುಮ್ to inherit, ಅರ್ಹತಿ deserves.

The eldest, eminent and righteous Rama, the scion of the Kakutstha dynasty, who is comparable to Dilipa and Nahusha deserves to inherit this kingdom just as Dasaratha did.
ಅನಾರ್ಯಜುಷ್ಟಮಸ್ವರ್ಗ್ಯಂ ಕುರ್ಯಾಂ ಪಾಪಮಹಂ ಯದಿ.

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮಹಂ ಲೋಕೇ ಭವೇಯಂ ಕುಲಪಾಂಸನಃ৷৷2.82.14৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅನಾರ್ಯಜುಷ್ಟಮ್ followed by wretched ones, ಅಸ್ವರ್ಗ್ಯಮ್ not leading to heaven, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಕುರ್ಯಾಂ ಯದಿ if I do, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮ್ to the Ikshvaku kings, ಕುಲಪಾಂಸನಃ one who is a disgrace to the family, ಭವೇಯಮ್ I shall become.

If I commit this evil act followed by wretched people which would not lead any one to heaven, I shall only be bringing disgrace to the kings of the Ikshvaku dynasty.
ಯದ್ಧಿ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಕೃತಂ ಪಾಪಂ ನಾಹಂ ತದಪಿ ರೋಚಯೇ.

ಇಹಸ್ಥೋ ವನದುರ್ಗಸ್ಥಂ ನಮಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.82.15৷৷


ಮಾತ್ರಾ by my mother, ಯತ್ which, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಕೃತಮ್ was committed, ತತ್ ಅಪಿ that one also, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ರೋಚಯೇ ಹಿ do not accept, ಇಹಸ್ಥಃ from here, ವನದುರ್ಗಸ್ಥಮ್ one staying in impenetrable forest, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ನಮಸ್ಯಾಮಿ pay obeisance.

I will never accept the evil deed committed by my mother. From here itself I shall pay
obeisance with folded palms to my brother who dwells in the impenetrable forest.
ರಾಮಮೇವಾನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ರಾಜಾ ಸ ದ್ವಿಪದಾಂ ವರಃ.

ತ್ರಯಾಣಾಮಪಿ ಲೋಕಾನಾಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮರ್ಹತಿ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.82.16৷৷


ರಾಮಮೇವ Rama alone, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I will follow, ದ್ವಿಪದಾಂ ವರಃ best among men, ಸಃ he alone, ರಾಜಾ is the king, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ತ್ರಯಾಣಾಂ ಲೋಕಾನಾಮ್ of the three worlds', ರಾಜ್ಯಮಪಿ kingdom, ಅರ್ಹತಿ deserves.

I shall follow Rama the best among men. He alone and no one else deserves to rule over the kingdom of the three worlds.
ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಧರ್ಮಸಂಯುಕ್ತಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸರ್ವೇ ಸಭಾಸದಃ.

ಹರ್ಷಾನ್ಮುಮುಚುರಶ್ರೂಣಿ ರಾಮೇ ನಿಹಿತಚೇತಸಃ৷৷2.82.17৷৷


ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಸಭಾಸದಃ members of the assembly, ಧರ್ಮಸಂಯುಕ್ತಮ್ bound by righteousness, ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ರಾಮೇ on Rama, ನಿಹಿತಚೇತಸಃ fixing their thoughts, ಹರ್ಷಾತ್ out of joy, ಅಶ್ರೂಣಿ tears, ಮುಮುಚುಃ shed.

Hearing the words of Bharata full of righteousness, all the men assembled there shed tears of joy, thinking of Rama.
ಯದಿ ತ್ವಾರ್ಯಂ ನ ಶಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವಿನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಂ ವನಾತ್.

ವನೇ ತತ್ರೈವ ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯಥಾರ್ಯೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷2.82.18৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಮ್ my noble brother, ವನಾತ್ from the forest, ವಿನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಮ್ to bring back, ನ ಶಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯದಿ if I am not able, ಆರ್ಯಃ noble brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಯಥಾ as, ತಥಾ so, ತತ್ರ there, ವನೇ ಏವ in the forest itself, ವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall dwell.

If I am not able to bring back my noble brother (Rama) from the forest, I shall also dwell there like my noble brother Lakshmana.
ಸರ್ವೋಪಾಯಂ ತು ವರ್ತಿಷ್ಯೇ ವಿನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಂ ಬಲಾತ್.

ಸಮಕ್ಷಮಾರ್ಯಮಿಶ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಸಾಧೂನಾಂ ಗುಣವರ್ತಿನಾಮ್৷৷2.82.19৷৷


ಗುಣವರ್ತಿನಾಮ್ of the virtuous, ಸಾಧೂನಾಮ್ of the pious, ಆರ್ಯಮಿಶ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ noble ones, ಸಮಕ್ಷಮ್ in the presence, ಬಲಾತ್ with all force, ವಿನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಮ್ to bring back, ಸರ್ವೋಪಾಯಮ್ by all means, ವರ್ತಿಷ್ಯೇ I shall attempt.

I shall employ all possible means to bring him back and join you who are respectable, virtuous and pious.
ವಿಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ಮಾನ್ತಿಕಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಮಾರ್ಗಶೋಧಕರಕ್ಷಕಾಃ.

ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾಪಿತಾ ಮಯಾ ಪೂರ್ವಂ ಯತ್ರಾಪಿ ಮಮ ರೋಚತೇ৷৷2.82.20৷৷


ಮಾರ್ಗಶೋಧಕರಕ್ಷಕಾಃ explorers and protectors of the paths, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ವಿಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ಮಾನ್ತಿಕಾಃ who work for wages and no wages, ಮಯಾ by me, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ previously, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾಪಿತಾಃ have been despatched, ಮಮ for me, ಯಾತ್ರಾಪಿ this journey, ರೋಚತೇ pleases.

I have already despatched the explorers and protectors of roads who work for wages and without wages as well. It also pleases me to undertake this journey.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಭರತೋ ಭ್ರಾತೃವತ್ಸಲಃ.

ಸಮೀಪಸ್ಥಮುವಾಚೇದಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಂ ಮನ್ತ್ರಕೋವಿದಮ್৷৷2.82.21৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous one, ಭ್ರಾತೃವತ್ಸಲಃ a devoted brother, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು having uttered, ಸಮೀಪಸ್ಥಮ್ standing nearby, ಮನ್ತ್ರಕೋವಿದಮ್ skilled in counselling, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ to Sumantra, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Righteous Bharata who was full of devotion towards his brother having uttered thus, addressed the skilful counsellor Sumantra standing nearby:
ತೂರ್ಣಮುತ್ಥಾಯ ಗಚ್ಛ ತ್ವಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! ಮಮ ಶಾಸನಾತ್.

ಯಾತ್ರಾಮಾಜ್ಞಾಪಯ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಬಲಂ ಚೈವ ಸಮಾನಯ৷৷2.82.22৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! Sumantra, ಮಮ my, ಶಾಸನಾತ್ on command, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ quickly, ಉತ್ಥಾಯ after rising, ಗಚ್ಛ ತ್ವಂ go, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ speedily, ಯಾತ್ರಾಮ್ expedition, ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಯ order, ಬಲಂ ಚೈವ army also, ಸಮಾನಯ bring.

O Sumantra! quickly rise and go. On my authority, order the expedition and let the army be marshalled at once.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ ಸ್ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತು ಭರತೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಹೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತದಾದಿಶತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಯಥಾಸನ್ದಿಷ್ಟಮಿಷ್ಟವತ್৷৷2.82.23৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ magnanimous, ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ಏವಮ್ in that way, ಉಕ್ತಃ having been instructed, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ in delight, ತತ್ then, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entirely, ಯಥಾಸನ್ದಿಷ್ಟಮ್ as has been commanded, ಇಷ್ಟವತ್ as if he longed, ಆದಿಶತ್ ordered.

On hearing the words of the magnanimous Bharata, Sumantra was delighted and as instructed, ordered everything as if he was anxious to do it himself.
ತಾಃ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ ಪ್ರಕೃತಯೋ ಬಲಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಾ ಬಲಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಯಾತ್ರಾಂ ಸಮಾಜ್ಞಪ್ತಾಂ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ನಿವರ್ತನೇ৷৷2.82.24৷৷


ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ನಿವರ್ತನೇ return, ಸಮಾಜ್ಞಪ್ತಾಮ್ ordered, ಬಲಸ್ಯ ಚ army's, ಯಾತ್ರಾಮ್ the expedition, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ತಾಃ those, ಪ್ರಕೃತಯಃ subjects, ಬಲಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಾಃ chiefs of army, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ were delighted.

Having come to know that orders were issued to send the army on an expedition to bring back Rama, the subjects and the army chiefs were delighted.
ತತೋ ಯೋಧಾಙ್ಗನಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ಭರ್ತ್ರೂನ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ಗೃಹೇಗೃಹೇ.

ಯಾತ್ರಾಗಮನಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ತ್ವರಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಹರ್ಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.82.25৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಗೃಹೇಗೃಹೇ in every house, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಯೋಧಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ wives of soldiers, ಯಾತ್ರಾಗಮನಮ್ for expedition, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having come to know, ಹರ್ಷಿತಾಃ gladly, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಭರ್ತ್ರೂನ್ their husbands, ತ್ವರಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ hastened them up.

Then, the wives of the soldiers having come to know of the expedition were all delighted and in every household hastened up their husbands.
ತೇ ಹಯೈರ್ಗೋರಥೈಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರೈಸ್ಸ್ಯನ್ದನೈಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಜವೈಃ

ಸಹ ಯೋಧೈರ್ಬಲಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಾ ಬಲಂ ಸರ್ವಮಚೋದಯನ್৷৷2.82.26৷৷


ತೇ those, ಬಲಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಾಃ chiefs of army, ಹಯೈಃ horses, ಶೀಘ್ರೈಃ fast-moving, ಗೋರಥೈಃ bullock carts, ಮಹಾಜವೈಃ of swift, ಸ್ಯನ್ದನೈಶ್ಚ by chariots, ಯೋಧೈಶ್ಚ ಸಹ with soldiers, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಬಲಮ್ army, ಅಚೋದಯನ್ urged.

Those chiefs of the army urged the soldiers, horses, fast-moving bullock-carts and swift chariots (to move on).
ಸಜ್ಜಂ ತು ತದ್ಬಲಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಭರತೋ ಗುರುಸನ್ನಿಧೌ.

ರಥಂ ಮೇ ತ್ವರಯಸ್ವೇತಿ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಂ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತೋಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.82.27৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಸಜ್ಜಮ್ ready, ತತ್ ಬಲಮ್ that army, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಗುರುಸನ್ನಿಧೌ in the presence of the preceptor (Vasistha), ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಃ on his side, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ to Sumantra, ಮೇ my, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ತ್ವರಯಸ್ವ quickly prepare, ಇತಿ like this, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

When Bharata saw that the army was ready, he instructed Sumantra who was standing by the side of the preceptor to quickly prepare his chariot.
ಭರತಸ್ಯ ತು ತಸ್ಯಾಜ್ಞಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ಚ ಹರ್ಷಿತಃ.

ರಥಂ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.82.28৷৷


ತಸ್ಯ ಭರತಸ್ಯ that Bharata's, ಆಜ್ಞಾಮ್ command, ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ having received, ಹರ್ಷಿತಃ delighted, ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ with excellent horses, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ harnessed, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ grasping, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ
went.

He (Sumantra) received the command of Bharata in great delight and set out with a chariot harnessed with excellent horses.
ಸ ರಾಘವ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯಧೃತಿಃ ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ ಬ್ರುವನ್ ಸುಯುಕ್ತಂ ದೃಢಸತ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಗುರುಂ ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಗತಂ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದಯಿಷ್ಯನ್ಭರತೋಬ್ರವೀತ್ತದಾ৷৷2.82.29৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಘವಃ Bharata, ಸತ್ಯಧೃತಿಃ firm in truth, ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ valiant, ದೃಢಸತ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಃ whose valour comes out of unshakable truth, ಸುಯುಕ್ತಮ್ judiciously, ಬ್ರುವನ್ speaking, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಗತಮ್ gone to the great forest, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಮ್ illustrious, ಗುರುಮ್ esteemed brother, ಪ್ರಸಾದಯಿಷ್ಯನ್ to propitiate, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Bharata, a descendant of the Raghu race, firm in truth, one whose valour comes out of unswerving truth, speaking judiciously said this to propitiate his esteemed brother who was in the dense forest:
ತೂರ್ಣಂ ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! ಗಚ್ಛ ಬಲಸ್ಯ ಯೋಗಾಯ ಬಲಪ್ರಧಾನಾನ್.

ಆನೇತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಹಿ ತಂ ವನಸ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ ರಾಮಂ ಜಗತೋ ಹಿತಾಯ৷৷2.82.30৷৷


ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ! Sumantra, ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ arise, ಬಲಸ್ಯ the army's, ಯೋಗಾಯ to assemble, ಬಲಪ್ರಧಾನಾನ್ to leaders of the army, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ quickly, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ವನಸ್ಥಮ್ who is in the forest, ತಮ್ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ having appeased, ಜಗತಃ world's, ಹಿತಾಯ welfare, ಆನೇತುಮ್ to bring, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಹಿ am wishing.

O Sumantra, arise, go at once to the leaders of the army and ask them to assemble the troops. I shall propifiate Rama who is in the deep forest and bring him back for the welfare of the world.
ಸಸೂತಪುತ್ರೋ ಭರತೇನ ಸಮ್ಯಗಾಜ್ಞಾಪಿತಸ್ಸಮ್ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಕಾಮಃ.

ಶಶಾಸ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಪ್ರಧಾನಾನ್ಬಲಸ್ಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನಂ ಚ৷৷2.82.31৷৷


ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ distinctly, ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿತಃ having been ordered, ಸಮ್ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಕಾಮಃ with his desire fulfilled, ಸಃ that, ಸೂತಪುತ್ರಃ charioteer, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಪ್ರಧಾನಾನ್ to important subjects, ಬಲಸ್ಯ army's, ಮುಖ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ chiefs, ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನಂ ಚ to friends, ಶಶಾಸ ordered.

The charioteer categorically commanded by Bharata, his desire fulfilled, communicated the royal mandate to all important subjects, chiefs of army and friends.
ತತ ಸ್ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ ಕುಲೇ ಕುಲೇ ತೇ ರಾಜನ್ಯವೈಶ್ಯಾ ವೃಷಲಾಶ್ಚ ವಿಪ್ರಾಃ.

ಅಯೂಯುಜನ್ನುಷ್ಟ್ರಖರಾನ್ರಥಾಂಶ್ಚ ನಾಗಾನ್ಹಯಾಂಶ್ಚೈವ ಕುಲಪ್ರಸೂತಾನ್৷৷2.82.32৷৷


ತತಃ there after, ಕುಲೇ ಕುಲೇ in every household, ತೇ those, ರಾಜನ್ಯವೈಶ್ಯಾಃ kshatriyas, vaisyas ವೃಷಲಾಶ್ಚ sudras, ವಿಪ್ರಾಃ brahmins, ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ after rising up, ಉಷ್ಟ್ರಖರಾನ್ camels and asses, ರಥಾಂಶ್ಚ chariots, ಕುಲಪ್ರಸೂತಾನ್ born in a good race, ನಾಗಾನ್ elephants, ಹಯಾಂಶ್ಚೈವ horses as well, ಅಯೂಯುಜನ್ harnessed.

Thereafter, men from every household, kshatriyas, vaisyas, sudras and brahmins came out and harnessed their chariots to the camels and asses, elephants and horses of high pedigree.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ದ್ವ್ಯಶೀತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the eightysecond sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
