[Bharata expresses his desire to bring back Rama --- enquires the way to Bharadwaja's hermitage.]

ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ಭರತೋ ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಂ ಗುಹಮ್.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಹೇತ್ವರ್ಥಸಂಹಿತಮ್৷৷2.85.1৷৷


ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ having spoken, ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಃ great intellectual, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಮ್ the overlord of the nishadas, ಗುಹಮ್ Guha, ಹೇತ್ವರ್ಥಸಂಹಿತಮ್ in well thought out and significant, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

When thus spoken to, Bharata, a great intellectual, replied to Guha with these well thought out and meaningful words.
ಊರ್ಜಿತಃ ಖಲು ತೇ ಕಾಮಃ ಕೃತೋ ಮಮ ಗುರೋಸ್ಸಖೇ.

ಯೋ ಮೇ ತ್ವಮೀದೃಶೀಂ ಸೇನಾಮೇಕೋಭ್ಯರ್ಚಿತುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.85.2৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಗುರೋಃ elder brother's, ಸಖೇ friend, ಯಃ ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಏಕಃ alone, ಈದೃಶೀಮ್ this large, ಸೇನಾಮ್ army, ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಚಿತುಮ್ to extend hospitality, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ want, ತೇ your, ಕೃತಃ done, ಕಾಮಃ desire, ಊರ್ಜಿತಃ ಖಲು is indeed great.

O dear friend of my elder brother, your desire to extend hospitality to this large army all alone is indeed noble.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಗುಹಂ ವಚನಮುತ್ತಮಮ್.

ಅಬ್ರವೀದ್ಭರತ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಂ ಪುನಃ৷৷2.85.3৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ of great radiance, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ the majestic one, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಗುಹಮ್ to Guha, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ courteous, ವಚನಮ್ word, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತು having said, ಪುನಃ again, ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಮ್ addressing king of the nishadas, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Having spoken to Guha courteously, the majestic, radiant Bharata continued:
ಕತರೇಣ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮಂ ಗುಹ.

ಗಹನೋಯಂ ಭೃಶಂ ದೇಶೋ ಗಙ್ಗಾನೂಪೋ ದುರತ್ಯಯಃ৷৷2.85.4৷৷


ಗುಹ Guha, ಕತರೇಣ by which path, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮಮ್ to the hermitage of Bharadwaja, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ can I go, ಗಙ್ಗನೂಪಃ marshy banks of Ganga, ಅಯಮ್ this, ದೇಶಃ region, ಭೃಶಮ್ highly, ಗಹನಃ is
dense, ದುರತ್ಯಯಃ very difficult to traverse.

O Guha! this region of Ganga with its dense forest is very difficult to cross. How can I reach the hermitage of Bharadwaja?
ತಸ್ಯ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ.

ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಗುಹೋ ಗಹನಗೋಚರಃ৷৷2.85.5৷৷


ಧೀಮತಃ of the sagacious, ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ of that king's son, ತತ್ ವಚನಮ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಗಹನಗೋಚರಃ one who ranges in the dense forest, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms (in reverence), ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

When he heard those words of the sagacious Bharata, Guha the forest ranger answered him reverentially with folded palms.
ದಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ವಾನುಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಧನ್ವಿನಸ್ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ.

ಅಹಂ ತ್ವಾನುಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ ಮಹಾಯಶಃ৷৷2.85.6৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಃ a man of great renown, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ king's son, ಧನ್ವಿನಃ armed with bows, ದಾಶಾಃ fishermen, ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ well-prepared, ತ್ವಾ you, ಅನುಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ shall follow, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತ್ವಾ you, ಅನುಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall follow.

O prince of great renown! I shall follow you, well-prepared with these fishermen, armed with bows.
ಕಚ್ಛಿನ್ನದುಷ್ಟೋ ವ್ರಜಸಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಃ.

ಇಯಂ ತೇ ಮಹತೀ ಸೇನಾ ಶಙ್ಕಾಂ ಜನಯತೀವ ಮೇ৷৷2.85.7৷৷


ಅಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಃ of unwearied actions, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ towards Rama, ದುಷ್ಟಃ bearing ill-will, ನ ವ್ರಜಸಿ ಕಚ್ಛಿತ್ are you not going to that place?, ಮಹತೀ large, ತೇ your, ಇಯಂ ಸೇನಾ this army, ಮೇ to me, ಶಙ್ಕಾಮ್ doubt, ಜನಯತೀವ as though arouses.

Are you not going to that place with the evil intention of causing harm to Rama of unwearied actions? This large army of yours arouses doubts in me.
ತಮೇವಮಭಿಭಾಷನ್ತಮಾಕಾಶ ಇವ ನಿರ್ಮಲಃ.

ಭರತಶ್ಶ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಣಯಾ ವಾಚಾ ಗುಹಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.85.8৷৷


ಆಕಾಶಃ ಇವ like the sky, ನಿರ್ಮಲಃ tranquil, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಅಭಿಭಾಷನ್ತಮ್ talking, ತಂ ಗುಹಮ್ addressing Guha, ಶ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಣಯಾ in gentle, ವಾಚಾ voice, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

When he heard Guha thus speaking, Bharata who was as tranquil as the sky, said to him in a gentle voice.
ಮಾಭೂತ್ಸ ಕಾಲೋ ಯತ್ಕಷ್ಟಂ ನ ಮಾಂ ಶಙ್ಕಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.

ರಾಘವ ಸ್ಸಹಿ ಮೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಃ ಪಿತುಸಮೋ ಮತಃ৷৷2.85.9৷৷


ಯತ್ which, ಕಷ್ಟಮ್ calamity, ಸಃ ಕಾಲಃ that time, ಮಾ ಭೂತ್ shall not come, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಶಙ್ಕಿತುಮ್ to suspect, ನಾರ್ಹಸಿ you should not, ಮೇ my, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಃ eldest, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ that Rama, ಪಿತೃಸಮಃ is equal to my father, ಮತಃ ಹಿ he has been held in high esteem.

That calmitous time will never come (again). You should not suspect me. I look upon Rama, my eldest brother, as my father.
ತಂ ನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಂ ಯಾಮಿ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಂ ವನವಾಸಿನಮ್.

ಬುದ್ಧಿರನ್ಯಾ ನ ತೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ ಗುಹ ಸತ್ಯಂ ಬ್ರವೀಮಿ ತೇ৷৷2.85.10৷৷


ವನವಾಸಿನಮ್ residing in the forest, ತಮ್ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಮ್ to that scion of the Kakutsthas, ನಿವರ್ತಯಿತುಮ್ to bring back, ಯಾಮಿ I am going, ಗುಹ O Guha, ತೇ to you, ಅನ್ಯಾ other, ಬುದ್ಧಿ: thought, ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ not to be entertained, ತೇ to you, ಸತ್ಯಮ್ truth, ಬ್ರವೀಮಿ I am telling.

I am going to bring back that scion of the kakutsthas (Rama) who resides in the forest. O Guha, do not entertain any other thought. I am tellng you the truth.
ಸ ತು ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟವದನ ಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭರತಭಾಷಿತಮ್.

ಪುನರೇವಾಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭರತಂ ಪ್ರತಿ ಹರ್ಷಿತಃ৷৷2.85.11৷৷


ಭರತಭಾಷಿತಮ್ Bharata's words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on hearing, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟವದನಃ one whose is face beaming with joy, ಸಃ ತು that Guha, ಹರ್ಷಿತಃ delighted, ಭರತಂ ಪ್ರತಿ looking at Bharata, ಪುನರೇವ once again, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

When he heard those words of Bharata, Guha was delighted and his face beamed with joy as he said to Bharata:
ಧನ್ಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ನ ತ್ವಯಾ ತುಲ್ಯಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಜಗತೀತಲೇ.

ಅಯತ್ನಾದಾಗತಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ತ್ಯಕ್ತುಮಿಹೇಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.85.12৷৷


ಯಃ ತ್ವಮ್ such a man as you are, ಇಹ now, ಅಯತ್ನಾತ್ effortlessly, ಆಗತಮ್ arrived, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ತ್ಯಕ್ತುಮ್ to renounce, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ wish, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಧನ್ಯಃ are blessed, ತ್ವಯಾ your, ತುಲ್ಯಮ್ equal, ಜಗತೀತಲೇ on this earth, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I do not see.

Blessed indeed you are as you desire to renounce the kingdom that has come to you effortlessly. I see none equal to you on this earth.
ಶಾಶ್ವತೀ ಖಲು ತೇ ಕೀರ್ತಿರ್ಲೋಕಾನನುಚರಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಗತಂ ರಾಮಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾನಯಿತುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.85.13৷৷


ಯಃ ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರಗತಮ್ who is in great difficulty, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾನಯಿತುಮ್ to bring back, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ desire, ತೇ your, ಶಾಶ್ವತೀ everlasting, ಕೀರ್ತಿಃ fame, ಲೋಕಾನ್ in this world, ಅನುಚರಿಷ್ಯತಿ will spread.

You desire to bring back Rama who is in great difficulty. This everlasting fame of yours will spread all over the world.
ಏವಂ ಸಮ್ಭಾಷಮಾಣಸ್ಯ ಗುಹಸ್ಯ ಭರತಂ ತದಾ.

ಬಭೌ ನಷ್ಟಪ್ರಭಸ್ಸೂರ್ಯೋ ರಜನೀ ಚಾಭ್ಯವರ್ತತ৷৷2.85.14৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಗುಹಸ್ಯ Guha's, ಏವಂ thus, ಭರತಂ to Bharata, ಸಮ್ಭಾಷಮಾಣಸ್ಯ while conversing, ಸೂರ್ಯಃ sun, ನಷ್ಟಪ್ರಭಃ diminished light, ಬಭೌ shone, ರಜನೀ ಚ night, ಅಭ್ಯವರ್ತತ set in.

As Guha was thus conversing with Bharata, the rays of the Sun diminished and the night set in.
ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ ಸ ತಾಂ ಸೇನಾಂ ಗುಹೇನ ಪರಿತೋಷಿತಃ.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇನ ಸಹ ಶ್ರೀಮಾಞ್ಛಯನಂ ಸಮುಪಾಗಮತ್৷৷2.85.15৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ fortunate Bharata, ಸಃ he, ತಾಂ ಸೇನಾಂ that army, ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ having encamped, ಗುಹೇನ with Guha, ಪರಿತೋಷಿತಃ gratified, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇನ ಸಹ along with Satrughna, ಶಯನಂ sleep, ಸಮುಪಾಗಮತ್ obtained.

Fortunate Bharata gratified by Guha encamped his army and retired to bed along with Satrughna.
ರಾಮಚಿನ್ತಾಮಯ ಶ್ಶೋಕೋ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತೋ ಹ್ಯನರ್ಹಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ ತಾದೃಶಃ৷৷2.85.16৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the magnanimous, ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಸ್ಯ of a man of righteous outlook, ಅನರ್ಹಸ್ಯ of him who does not deserve (grief), ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ತಾದೃಶಃ such, ರಾಮಚಿನ್ತಾಮಯಃ filled with the
thought of Rama, ಶೋಕಃ grief, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಹಿ had befallen.

But the thought of Rama caused grief to the magnanimous Bharata, a man of righteous outlook who did not deserve such grief.
ಅನ್ತರ್ದಾಹೇನ ದಹನಸ್ಸನ್ತಾಪಯತಿ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ವನದಾಹಾಭಿಸನ್ತಪ್ತಂ ಗೂಢೋಗ್ನಿರಿವ ಪಾದಪಮ್৷৷2.85.17৷৷


ವನದಾಹಾಭಿಸನ್ತಪ್ತಂ dried by forest fire, ಪಾದಪಂ tree, ಗೂಢಃ hidden, ಅಗ್ನಿರಿವ like a fire, ರಾಘವಮ್ Bharata, ದಹನಃ grief, ಅನ್ತರ್ದಾಹೇನ burning within himself, ಸನ್ತಾಪಯತಿ scorching.

Just like a concealed forest-fire scorching the dried up forest, the fire of sorrow kindled in his mind scorched Bharata.
ಪ್ರಸೃತಸ್ಸರ್ವಗಾತ್ರೇಭ್ಯಸ್ಸ್ವೇದಂ ಶೋಕಾಗ್ನಿಸಮ್ಭವಮ್.

ಯಥಾ ಸೂರ್ಯಾಂಶುಸನ್ತಪ್ತೋ ಹಿಮವಾನ್ ಪ್ರಸೃತೋಹಿಮಮ್৷৷2.85.18৷৷


ಸೂರ್ಯಾಂಶುಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ heated by the Sun's rays, ಹಿಮವಾನ್ Himalayas, ಯಥಾ just as, ಹಿಮಂ ice, ಪ್ರಸೃತಃ melted, ಸರ್ವಗಾತ್ರೇಭ್ಯಃ from all limbs, ಶೋಕಾಗ್ನಿಸಮ್ಭವಮ್ caused by the fire of grief, ಸ್ವೇದಮ್ sweat, ಪ್ರಸೃತಃ poured out.

Like the ice melted by the heat of the Sun's rays flows down the Himalayas, sweat poured from all parts of his body caused by the fire of grief.
ಧ್ಯಾನನಿರ್ಧರಶೈಲೇನ ವಿನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸಿತಧಾತುನಾ.

ದೈನ್ಯಪಾದಪಸಂಘೇನ ಶೋಕಾಯಾಸಾಧಿಶೃಙ್ಗಿಣಾ৷৷2.85.19৷৷

ಪ್ರಮೋಹಾನನ್ತಸತ್ತ್ವೇನ ಸನ್ತಾಪೌಷಧಿವೇಣುನಾ.

ಆಕ್ರಾನ್ತೋ ದುಃಖಶೈಲೇನ ಮಹತಾ ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತಃ৷৷2.85.20৷৷


ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತಃ Kaikeyi's son, ಧ್ಯಾನನಿರ್ಧರಶೈಲೇನ by the cavityless rocks of that mountain of
contemplation, ವಿನಿಃಶ್ವಸಿತಧಾತುನಾ by the minerals of heaving sighs, ದೈನ್ಯಪಾದಪಸಂಘೇನ by the multitude of trees in the form of dejection, ಶೋಕಾಯಾಸಾಧಿಶೃಙ್ಗಿಣಾ by the peaks of sorrow fatigue and mental distress, ಪ್ರಮೋಹಾನನ್ತಸತ್ತ್ವೇನ by the countless creatures of stupor, ಸನ್ತಾಪೌಷಧಿವೇಣುನಾ by the bamboo tree of sorrow, ಮಹತಾ great, ದುಃಖಶೈಲೇನ by the mountains of grief, ಆಕ್ರಾನ್ತಃ was invaded.

Bharata, son of Kaikeyi was stricken by a lofty mountain of grief. The cavityless rocks of that mountain were his contemplation, the minerals were his sighs, the multitude of trees were his desolation, peaks were his fatigue and mental distress, the unlimited number of animals were his stupor, the bamboo tree was his sorrow.
ವಿನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ವೈ ಭೃಶದುರ್ಮನಾಸ್ತತಃ ಪ್ರಮೂಢಸಂಜ್ಞಃ ಪರಮಾಪದಂ ಗತಃ.

ಶಮಂ ನ ಲೇಭೇ ಹೃದಯಜ್ವರಾರ್ದಿತೋ ನರರ್ಷಭೋ ಯೂಥಹತೋ ಯಥರ್ಷಭಃ৷৷2.85.21৷৷


ತತಃ then, ನರರ್ಷಭಃ best among men (Bharata), ವಿನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸನ್ heaving sighs, ಭೃಶದುರ್ಮನಾಃ with greatly distraught mind, ಪ್ರಮೂಢಸಂಜ್ಞಃ with bewildered senses, ಪರಮಾಪದಂ a great calamity, ಗತಃ caught, ಹೃದಯಜ್ವರಾರ್ದಿತಃ oppressed by the fever raging his heart, ಯೂಥಹತಃ separated from the herd, ಋಷಭಃ ಯಥಾ like a bull, ಶಮಂ peace of mind, ನ ಲೇಭೇ did not get.

Then best of men, Bharata, with highly distraught mind and heaving sighs, with senses bewildered and oppressed by the fever raging in his heart and caught in a great calamity, like a bull separated from the herd enjoyed no peace of mind.
ಗುಹೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ಭರತಸ್ಸಮಾಗತೋ ಮಹಾನುಭಾವಸ್ಸಜನಸ್ಸಮಾಹಿತಃ.

ಸುದುರ್ಮನಾಸ್ತಂ ಭರತಂ ತದಾ ಪುನರ್ಗುಹ ಸ್ಸಮಾಶ್ವಾಸಯದಗ್ರಜಂ ಪ್ರತಿ৷৷2.85.22৷৷


ಮಹಾನುಭಾವಃ magnanimous, ಸಜನಃ along with his people, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಸಮಾಹಿತಃ with a composed mind, ಗುಹೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ with Guha, ಸಮಾಗತಃ joined, ತದಾ then, ಸುದುರ್ಮನಾಃ with greatly distraught mind, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ that Bharata, ಪುನಃ again, ಅಗ್ರಜಂ ಪ್ರತಿ about elder brother Rama, ಆಶ್ವಾಸಯತ್ consoled.

Bharata, a man of great magnanimity, joined Guha together with his people with composed mind. Then Guha, greatly distraught, again consoled Bharata regarding his elder brother Rama.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಪಞ್ಚಾಶೀತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the eightyfifth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
