ಅಥ then, ಗಹನಗೋಚರಃ forest ranger, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ಅಪ್ರಮೇಯಾಯ to a man of immeasurable (virtues), ಭರತಾಯ to Bharata, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the magnanimous, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯ Lakshmana's, ಸದ್ಭಾವಮ್ good nature, ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ explained.
Then Guha, the forest ranger, described to Bharata the countless qualities of the good-natured, magnanimous Lakshmana:
ಅಹಮ್ I, ಭ್ರಾತೃಗುಪ್ತ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ for the sake of protecting his brother, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತಮ್ completely, ಜಾಗ್ರತಮ್ keeping awake, ಶರಚಾಪಾಸಿಧಾರಿಣಮ್ holding arrows, bow and sword, ಗುಣೈಃ with virtues, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ endowed with, ತಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ that Lakshmana, ಅಬೃವಮ್ I said.
I spoke to the virtuous Lakshmana, who was holding arrows, bow and sword in his hand and keeping awake completely for the protection of his brother.
ರಾಘವನನ್ದನ delight of the race of Raghu, ತಾತ! my friend, (ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ Lakshmana), ಸುಖಾ comfortable, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಶಯ್ಯಾ couch, ತ್ವದರ್ಥಮ್ for your sake, ಉಪಕಲ್ಪಿತಾ has been arranged, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಶ್ವಸಿಹಿ be assured, ಅಸ್ಯಾಮ್ upon it, ಸುಖಮ್ peacefully, ಶೇಷ್ವ lie down.
My friend, Lakshmana, the delight of the Raghavas! this comfortable couch has been arranged for you. Lie down peacefully without any anxiety.
ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನ್ O righteous one, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಸರ್ವಃ all, ಜನಃ people, ದುಃಖಾನಾಮ್ for hardships, ಉಚಿತಃ are accustomed, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸುಖೋಚಿತಃ are used to comfort, ತಸ್ಯ for Rama's, ಗುಪ್ತ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ for the sake of protection, ವಯಮ್ we, ಜಾಗರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಹೇ will stay awake.
O righteous one! you are used to conforts where as all of our people are accustomed to hardships. So we will stay awake and protect Rama.
ಮಮ for me, ಭುವಿ on earth, ರಾಮಾತ್ more than Rama, ಪ್ರಿಯತರಃ dearer, ಕಶ್ಚನ none, ನಾಸ್ತಿ ಹಿ does not exist, ಅಥ and, ಉತ್ಸುಕಃ anxious, ಮಾ ಭೂಃ do not have, ತವ your, ಅಗ್ರತಃ in presence, ಏತತ್ this, ಸತ್ಯಮ್ truthful, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಬ್ರವೀಮಿ I am telling.
To me, there is none on earth dearer than Rama. Do not have any anxiety. I am telling you the truth.
ಅಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸಾದಾದಾಶಂಸೇ ಲೋಕೇಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸುಮಹದ್ಯಶಃ.
ಧರ್ಮಾವಾಪ್ತಿಂ ಚ ವಿಪುಲಾಮರ್ಥಕಾಮೌ ಚ ಕೇವಲಮ್৷৷2.86.6৷৷
ಅಸ್ಯ this Rama's, ಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ grace, ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this ಲೋಕೇ world, ಸುಮಹತ್ great, ಯಶಃ renown, ವಿಪುಲಾಮ್ abundance of, ಧರ್ಮಾವಾಪ್ತಿಂ ಚ advantage of righteousness, ಕೇವಲಮ್ solely, ಅರ್ಥಕಾಮೌ ಚ artha (prosperity) and kama (pleasure), ಆಶಂಸೇ I desire.
By the grace of Rama, I want to acquire in this world great renown, abundance of righteousness, absolute artha (prosperity) and kama (pleasure).
ಸಃ ಅಹಂ as for me, ಸರ್ವೈಃ with all, ಸ್ವೈಃ own, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಭಿಃ ಸಹ with relatives, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಶಯಾನಮ್ asleep, ಪ್ರಿಯಸಖಮ್ dear friend, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಧನುಷ್ಪಾಣಿಃ bow in hand, ರಕ್ಷಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will protect.
As for me, bow in hand and all my kinsmen with me, I shall protect my dear friend Rama who is resting with Sita.
ನ ಹಿ ಮೇವಿದಿತಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದ್ವನೇಸ್ಮಿಂಶ್ಚರತ ಸ್ಸದಾ.
ಚತುರಙ್ಗಂ ಹ್ಯಪಿ ಬಲಂ ಪ್ರಸಹೇಮ ವಯಂ ಯುಧಿ৷৷2.86.8৷৷
ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ವನೇ in this forest, ಸದಾ always, ಚರತಃ ranging, ಮೇ to me, ಅವಿದಿತಮ್ unknown, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ nothing, ನ ಹಿ not, ವಯಮ್ we, ಯುಧಿ in the battle, ಚತುರಙ್ಗಂ ಬಲಮ್ ಅಪಿ four divisions of the army also, ಪ್ರಸಹೇಮ ಹಿ will withstand.
Nothing is unknown to me in this forest in which I range about continually. We can withstand an army of four divisions in a battle.
ಏವಮಸ್ಮಾಭಿರುಕ್ತೇನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.
ಅನುನೀತಾ ವಯಂ ಸರ್ವೇ ಧರ್ಮಮೇವಾನುಪಶ್ಯತಾ৷৷ 2.86.9৷৷
ಏವಂ thus, ಅಸ್ಮಾಭಿಃ by us, ಉಕ್ತೇನ having been uttered, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the magnanimous, ಧರ್ಮಮೇವ virtuousness alone, ಅನುಪಶ್ಯತಾ seeing, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ by Lakshmana, ವಯಮ್ we, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಅನುನೀತಾಃ have been entreated.
The magnanimous Lakshmana, established in dharma, replied:
ದಾಶರಥೌ Rama, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಶಯಾನೇ while sleeping, ಮಯಾ by me, ನಿದ್ರಾ sleep, ಲಬ್ಧುಮ್ to obtain, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಶಕ್ಯಾ is it possible, ಜೀವಿತಂ ವಾ either life, ಸುಖಾನಿ ವಾ or comforts.
While Rama sleep on the ground with Sita, how can I find sleep or joy or comfort?
ಯೋ ನ ದೇವಾಸುರೈಸ್ಸರ್ವೈಶ್ಶಕ್ಯಃ ಪ್ರಸಹಿತುಂ ಯುಧಿ.
ತಂ ಪಶ್ಯ ಗುಹ! ಸಂವಿಷ್ಟಂ ತೃಣೇಷು ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ৷৷2.86.11৷৷
ಗುಹ O Guha, ಯಃ that Rama, ಸರ್ವೈಃ by all, ದೇವಾಸುರೈಃ by gods and demons, ಯುಧಿ in battle, ಪ್ರಸಹಿತುಂ to withstand, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಃ not possible, ತಮ್ him, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ತೃಣೇಷು on the grass, ಸಂವಿಷ್ಟಮ್ lying down, ಪಶ್ಯ behold.
O Guha! behold Rama, whom gods and demons combined cannot withstand in a battle now lying on a bed of grass with Sita.
ಮಹತಾ ತಪಸಾ ಲಬ್ಧೋ ವಿವಿಧೈಶ್ಚ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮೈಃ.
ಏಕೋ ದಶರಥಸ್ಯೈಷ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಸದೃಶಲಕ್ಷಣಃ৷৷2.86.12৷৷
ಏಷಃ this Rama, ಮಹತಾ by great, ತಪಸಾ with austerities, ವಿವಿಧೈಃ by various, ಪರಿಶ್ರಮೈಶ್ಚ with efforts as well, ಲಬ್ಧಃ was obtained, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ಏಕಃ one, ಸದೃಶಲಕ್ಷಣಃ one with very similar virtues, ಪುತ್ರಃ is the son.
Rama is the only one among the sons who resembles his father in various virtues. Dasaratha obtained him after a great deal of austerities and efforts as well.
ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೇ ರಾಜಾ ನ ಚಿರಂ ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ.
ವಿಧವಾ ಮೇದಿನೀ ನೂನಂ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.86.13৷৷
ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ when he, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೇ is exiled, ರಾಜಾ king Dasaratha, ಚಿರಮ್ for a long time, ನ ವರ್ತಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ will not survive, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ಮೇದಿನೀ earth, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ soon, ವಿಧವಾ widow, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will become.
After Rama is exiled, king Dasaratha will not survive for long and surely the earth will soon be widowed.
ವಿನದ್ಯ ಸುಮಹಾನಾದಂ ಶ್ರಮೇಣೋಪರತಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ.
ನಿರ್ಘೋಷೋ ವಿರತೋ ನೂನಮಧ್ಯ ರಾಜನಿವೇಶನೇ৷৷2.86.14৷৷
ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಸುಮಹಾನಾದಮ್ loud sounds, ವಿನದ್ಯ having cried, ಶ್ರಮೇಣ with exhaustion, ಉಪರತಾಃ have ceased, ಅದ್ಯ now, ರಾಜನಿವೇಶನೇ in the king's palace, ನಿರ್ಘೋಷಃ clamour, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ವಿರತಃ has subsided.
The women of the inner apartment who lamented loudly, must have stopped weeping out of weariness. By now, the clamour in the king's palace would have surely subsided.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚೈವ even Kausalya, ರಾಜಾ ಚ king also, ತಥೈವ in the same way, ಮಮ ಜನನೀ my mother, ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ all of them, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ರಜನೀಮ್ night, ಯದಿ ಜೀವೇಯುಃ if they are alive, ನಾಶಂಸೇ I do not think.
I doubt whether the king, Kausalya and my mother Sumitra and the rest of them will outlive this night.
ಜೀವೇದಪಿ ಚ ಮೇ ಮಾತಾ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಸ್ಯಾನ್ವವೇಕ್ಷಯಾ.
ದುಃಖಿತಾ ಯಾ ತು ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ವೀರಸೂರ್ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.86.16৷৷
ಮೇ ಮಾತಾ my mother, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಸ್ಯ Satrughna's, ಅನ್ವವೇಕ್ಷಯಾ looking at, ಜೀವೇದಪಿ ಚ might be alive, ವೀರಸೂಃ mother of a warrior, ಯಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ that Kausalya, ಸಾ ತು as for her, ದುಃಖಿತಾ with extreme grief, ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ will die.
My mother might live, looking at Satrughna. But Kausalya, who is the mother of a hero, will die from extreme grief.
ಅತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮನವಾಪ್ಯ ಮನೋರಥಮ್.
ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ರಾಮಮನಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ ಪಿತಾ ಮೇ ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.86.17৷৷
ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ my father, ಅತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮ್ ಅತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮ್ gone by one after another, ಮನೋರಥಮ್ cherished desire, ಅನವಾಪ್ಯ without fulfilling, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅನಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ without placing, ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯತಿ will pass away.
My father, king Dasaratha, failing to fulfil his cherished desires one after another and unable to place Rama on the throne, will pass away.
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಕಾಲೇ when that moment, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತೇ had arrived, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ being in that state, ಪಿತರಮ್ my father, ಭೂಮಿಪಮ್ for the lord of the earth, ಸರ್ವೇಷು all, ಪ್ರೇತಕಾರ್ಯೇಷು in funeral rites, ಸಂಸ್ಕರಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will perform, ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾಃ men who attained their purpose.
When the moment of death arrives for my father, those who perform the funeral rites for him would have fulfilled their desire.
ರಮ್ಯಚತ್ವರಸಸ್ಥಾನಾಮ್ with lovely cross-roads and squares, ಸುವಿಭಕ್ತಮಹಾಪಥಾಮ್ well-laid highways, ಹರ್ಮ್ಯಪ್ರಾಸಾದಸಂಪನ್ನಾಮ್ full of mansions and palaces, ಸರ್ವರತ್ನವಿಭೂಷಿತಾಮ್ encrusted with every kind of precious stone, ಗಜಾಶ್ವರಥಸಂಬಾಧಾಮ್ full of elephants, horses and chariots, ತೂರ್ಯನಾದವಿನಾದಿತಾಮ್ resounding with trumpets, ಸರ್ವಕಲ್ಯಾಣಸಂಪೂರ್ಣಾಮ್ with universal well-being, ಹೃಷ್ಟಪುಷ್ಟಜನಾಕುಲಾಮ್ crowded with healthy people, ಆರಾಮೋದ್ಯಾನಸಂಪೂರ್ಣಾಮ್ with plenty of pleasure-gardens and parks, ಸಮಾಜೋತ್ಸವಶಾಲಿನೀಮ್ shining with community festivities, ಮಮ ಪಿತುಃ my father's, ರಾಜಧಾನೀಮ್ capital (Ayodhya), ಸುಖಿತಾಃ with all comforts, ವಿಚರಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will move about.
There in the capital of my father with its lovely cross-roads and squares, well-laid highways, full of mansions and palaces encrusted with all kinds of precious stones, teeming with elephants, horses and chariots, resounding with trumpets, and with well-being everywhere, and plenty of pleasure-gardens, and parks and community festivals, people sound in health would be moving about in great comfort.
ವಯಂ we, ಆಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this, ಸಮಯೇ the time, ನಿವೃತ್ತೇ returning, ಸತ್ಯಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೇನ who fulfilled his vow, ಕುಶಲಿನಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ along with him in safe condition, ಸುಖಿತಾಃ with happiness, ಅಪಿ ಪ್ರವಿಶೇಮಹಿ will we enter Ayodhya?
Can we ever re-enter Ayodhya happily after safely fulfilling the vow and completing the term of exile?
ಪರಿದೇವಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ ತಸ್ಯೈವಂ ಸುಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.
ತಿಷ್ಠತೋ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಶರ್ವರೀ ಸಾತ್ಯವರ್ತತ৷৷2.86.23৷৷
ಸುಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the high-minded, ಏವಂ in this way, ಪರಿದೇವಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ lamenting so, ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ that prince, ತಿಷ್ಠತಃ while waiting, ಸಾ ಶರ್ವರೀ that night, ಅತ್ಯವರ್ತತ elapsed.
While the high-minded prince was lamenting this way and was waiting, the night passed off.
ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ ವಿಮಲೇ ಸೂರ್ಯೇ ಕಾರಯಿತ್ವಾ ಜಟಾ ಉಭೌ.
ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಭಾಗೀರಥೀತೀರೇ ಸುಖಂ ಸನ್ತಾರಿತೌ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.86.24৷৷
ವಿಮಲೇ when bright, ಸೂರ್ಯೇ Sun, ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ at dawn, ಉಭೌ both, ಆಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this, ಭಾಗೀರಥೀತೀರೇ on the bank of Bhagirathi, ಜಟಾಃ matting their hair, ಕಾರಯಿತ್ವಾ made, ಮಯಾ by me, ಸುಖಮ್ comfortably, ಸನ್ತಾರಿತೌ were ferried.
The next morning when the Sun shone bright, both of them matted their hair on the bank of the river Bhagirathi (Ganga) and I ferried them across comfortably.
ಜಟಾಧರೌ ತೌ ದ್ರುಮಚೀರವಾಸಸೌ ಮಹಾಬಲೌ ಕುಞ್ಜರಯೂಥಪೋಪಮೌ.
ವರೇಷುಚಾಪಾಸಿಧರೌ ಪರನ್ತಪೌ ವ್ಯಪೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣೌ ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ ಗತೌ৷৷2.86.25৷৷
ಜಟಾಧರೌ wearing matted hair, ದ್ರುಮಚೀರವಾಸಸೌ those two dressed in bark robes, ಮಹಾಬಲೌ of great strength, ಕುಞ್ಜರಯೂಥಪೋಪಮೌ comparable to elephants, ವರೇಷುಚಾಪಾಸಿಧರೌ armed with excellent bows, arrows and swords, ತೌ both, ಪರನ್ತಪೌ slayers of enemies, ವ್ಯಪೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣೌ looking back alertly, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಗತೌ went.
Rama and Lakshmana, slayers of enemies, who are as strong as bull elephants, with their hair matted, wearing robes made of bark, armed with excellent bows, arrows and swords went along with Sita looking around (vigilantly). ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಷಡಶೀತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷ Thus ends the eightysixth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
