[Bharata enquires about Rama, Sita and Lakshmana --- Guha narrates to Kausalya how Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent their time, matted their hair and slept on grass.]

ಗುಹಸ್ಯ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭರತೋ ಭೃಶಮಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.

ಧ್ಯಾನಂ ಜಗಾಮ ತತ್ರೈವ ಯತ್ರ ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತಮಪ್ರಿಯಮ್৷৷2.87.1৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಭೃಶಮ್ highly, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ unpleasant, ಗುಹಸ್ಯ from Guha, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ತತ್ ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ that unpleasant, ಯತ್ರ wherever, ಶ್ರುತಮ್ was heard, ತತ್ರೈವ there only, ಧ್ಯಾನಮ್ thought, ಜಗಾಮ obtained.

Extremely unhappy over what he heard from Guha, Bharata was immersed in thought then and there.
ಸುಕುಮಾರೋ ಮಹಾಸತ್ತ್ವಸ್ಸಿಂಹಸ್ಕನ್ಧೋ ಮಹಾಭುಜಃ.

ಪುಣ್ಡರೀಕವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷ ಸ್ತರುಣಃ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಃ৷৷2.87.2৷৷

ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ತು ಕಾಲಂ ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ.

ಪಪಾತ ಸಹಸಾ ತೋತ್ರೈರ್ಹ್ಯತಿವಿದ್ಧ ಇವ ದ್ವಿಪಃ৷৷2.87.3৷৷


ಸುಕುಮಾರಃ delicate, ಮಹಾಸತ್ತ್ವಃ highly energetic, ಸಿಂಹಸ್ಕನ್ಧಃ with shoulders like that of a lion, ಮಹಾಭುಜಃ mighty-armed, ಪುಣ್ಡರೀಕವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಃ wide-eyed like lotus petals, ತರುಣಃ youthful, ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಃ of graceful appearance, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ಕಾಲಂ ತು for a moment, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಶ್ವಸ್ಯ having revived, ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ with deeply distressed mind, ತೋತ್ರೈಃ by whips, ಅತಿವಿದ್ಧಃ smitten, ದ್ವಿಪಃ ಇವ like an elephant, ಸಹಸಾ at once, ಪಪಾತ fell down.

The delicate, youthful, highly energetic and mighty-armed Bharata of graceful appearance, with shoulders like that of a lion and wide-eyed like lotus petals, recovered for a moment and with a mind deeply distressed fell down at once like an elephant smitten by a goad.
ತದವಸ್ಥಂ ತು ಭರತಂ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋನನ್ತರಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ರುರೋದೋಚ್ಚೈರ್ವಿಸಂಜ್ಞಶ್ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಃ৷৷2.87.4৷৷


ಅನನ್ತರಸ್ಥಿತಃ standing close by, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ Satrughna, ತದವಸ್ಥಮ್ in this state, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಪರಿಷ್ಯಜ್ಯ having embraced, ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಃ smitten with grief, ವಿಸಂಜ್ಞಃ having lost his senses, ಉಚ್ಚೈಃ loudly, ರುರೋದ cried.

Seeing Bharata in that state, Satrughna who was standing close by, smitten with grief clasped him, cried loudly and fell senseless.
ತತಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ಸಮಾಪೇತುರ್ಮಾತರೋ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ತಾಃ.

ಉಪವಾಸಕೃಶಾ ದೀನಾ ಭರ್ತೃವ್ಯಸನಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ৷৷2.87.5৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಉಪವಾಸಕೃಶಾಃ emaciated due to fasting, ದೀನಾಃ desolate, ಭರ್ತೃವ್ಯಸನಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ afflicted by the calamity of their husband's death, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ತಾಃ ಮಾತರಃ mothers, ಸಮಾಪೇತುಃ rushed towards him.

Then Bharata's mothers, who were emaciated due to fasting and afflicted by the calamity of the death of their husband were desolate, rushed towards him.
ತಾಶ್ಚ ತಂ ಪತಿತಂ ಭೂಮೌ ರುದನ್ತ್ಯಃ ಪರ್ಯವಾರಯನ್.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ತ್ವನುಸೃತ್ಯೈನಂ ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ ಪರಿಷಸ್ವಜೇ৷৷2.87.6৷৷


ತಾಶ್ಚ all of them, ರುದನ್ತ್ಯ: sobbing, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಪತಿತಮ್ fallen, ತಮ್ him, ಪರ್ಯವಾರಯನ್ surrounded, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ತು as for Kausalya, ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ in a depressed mind, ಅನುಸೃತ್ಯ approaching, ಏನಮ್ that Bharata, ಪರಿಷಸ್ವಜೇ took him into her arms.

Sobbing, they gathered around Bharata who had fallen on the ground, while Kausalya approached him in a depressed state and took him into her arms.
ವತ್ಸಲಾ ಸ್ವಂ ಯಥಾ ವತ್ಸಮುಪಗೂಹ್ಯ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ಪರಿಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಭರತಂ ರುದನ್ತೀ ಶೋಕಲಾಲಸಾ৷৷2.87.7৷৷


ಶೋಕಲಾಲಸಾ distressed in grief, ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ desolate, ವತ್ಸಲಾ with filial love, ರುದನ್ತೀ weeping, ಸ್ವಮ್ her own, ವತ್ಸಂ ಯಥಾ like child, ಉಪಗೂಹ್ಯ clasping, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಪರಿಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ enquired.

Desolate Kausalya, in deep distress, clasped Bharata out of filial love as if he were her own child, wept and enquired of him:
ಪುತ್ರ ವ್ಯಾಧಿರ್ನ ತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿಚ್ಛರೀರಂ ಪರಿಬಾಧತೇ.

ಅದ್ಯ ರಾಜಕುಲಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ತ್ವದಧೀನಂ ಹಿ ಜೀವಿತಮ್৷৷2.87.8৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O son!, ವ್ಯಾಧಿಃ illness, ತೇ ಶರೀರಮ್ your body, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ ನ ಪರಿಬಾಧತೇ is not troubling, I hope, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಅಸ್ಯ ರಾಜಕುಲಸ್ಯ of this royal house, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ತ್ವದಧೀನಂ ಹಿ is dependent on you.

O son! I hope you are not affected by illness. Now the existence of this royal house devolves on you.
ತ್ವಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪುತ್ರ! ಜೀವಾಮಿ ರಾಮೇ ಸಭ್ರಾತೃಕೇಗತೇ.

ವೃತ್ತೇ ದಶರಥೇ ರಾಜ್ಞಿ ನಾಥ ಏಕಸ್ತ್ವಮದ್ಯ ನಃ৷৷2.87.9৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ O son, ಸಭ್ರಾತೃಕೇ along with your brother, Lakshmana, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ಗತೇ having gone, ರಾಜ್ಞಿ king, ದಶರಥೇ Dasaratha, ವೃತ್ತೇ had departed, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ seeing, ಜೀವಾಮಿ I am living, ಅದ್ಯ now, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಏಕಃ alone, ನಃ for us, ನಾಥಃ are protector.

O my son, with Rama gone to the forest along with your brother Lakshmana and with king Dasaratha departed from this world, I continue to live seeing you. From now on you alone are our sole protector.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ ಪುತ್ರ! ಶ್ರುತಂ ತೇ ಕಿಂಚದಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.

ಪುತ್ರೇ ವಾಪ್ಯೇಕಪುತ್ರಾಯಾ ಸ್ಸಹಭಾರ್ಯೇ ವನಂ ಗತೇ৷৷2.87.10৷৷


ಪುತ್ರ! O son, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ relating to Lakshmana, ಸಹಭಾರ್ಯೇ with his wife, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಗತೇ had gone, ಏಕಪುತ್ರಾಯಾಃ of me having only one son, ಪುತ್ರೇ ವಾ or relating to Rama, ಕಿಂಚಿತ್ even little, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ unpleasant news, ತೇ to you, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ ನ ಶ್ರುತಮ್ is not heard, I hope not.

O my son, I hope you have not heard any unpleasant news about Lakshmana or
about my only son Rama who has gone to the forest along with his wife.
ಸ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ಸಮಾಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ರುದನ್ನೇವ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಂ ಪರಿಸಾನ್ತ್ವೇದ್ಯಂ ಗುಹಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.87.11৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ of great renown, ಸಃ that Bharata, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ for a moment, ಸಮಾಶ್ವಸ್ಯ composing himself, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಮ್ Kausalya, ಪರಿಸಾನ್ತ್ವೇದ್ಯಂ reassuring, ರುದನ್ನೇವ still weeping, ಗುಹಮ್ to Guha, ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Highly renowned Bharata, composing himself for a moment and still weeping, reassured Kauslaya, and then said this to Guha:
ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಮೇ ಕ್ವಾವಸದ್ರಾತ್ರೌ ಕ್ವ ಸೀತಾ ಕ್ವ ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ.

ಅಸ್ವಪಚ್ಛಯನೇ ಕಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಿಂ ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಗುಹ ಶಂಸ ಮೇ৷৷2.87.12৷৷


ಗುಹ O Guha, ಮೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ my brother, ರಾತ್ರೌ in the night, ಕ್ವ where, ಅವಸತ್ did he dwell, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಕ್ವ where did she stay, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಕ್ವ where did he stay, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ having eaten, ಕಸ್ಮಿನ್ in which, ಶಯನೇ couch, ಅಸ್ವಪತ್ did he sleep, ಮೇ to me, ಶಂಸ tell me.

O Guha! where did my brother Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spend that night? What did they eat? On what couch did they sleep? Tell me all that.
ಸೋಬ್ರವೀದ್ಭರತಂ ಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿರ್ಗುಹಃ.

ಯದ್ವಿಧಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪೇದೇ ಚ ರಾಮೇ ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತೇತಿಥೌ৷৷2.87.13৷৷


ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಃ overlord of the nishadas, ಸಃ ಗುಹಃ that Guha, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ delighted, ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತೇ beloved
friend, ಅತಿಥೌ guest, ರಾಮೇ relating to Rama, ಯದ್ವಿಧಮ್ in whatever way, ಪ್ರತಿಪೇದೇ all that he had provided, ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Thereupon delighted Guha, overlord of the nishadas, told Bharata all that he had provided to Rama, his beloved friend and guest:
ಅನ್ನಮುಚ್ಚಾವಚಂ ಭಕ್ಷಾಃ ಫಲಾನಿ ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ ಚ.

ರಾಮಾಯಾಭ್ಯವಹಾರಾರ್ಥಂ ಬಹುಚೋಪಹೃತಂ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.87.14৷৷


ಮಯಾ by me, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಅಭ್ಯವಹಾರಾರ್ಥಮ್ for the purpose of meal, ಉಚ್ಚಾವಚಮ್ of various kinds, ಅನ್ನಮ್ rice, ಭಕ್ಷಾಃ eatables, ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ of several kinds, ಫಲಾನಿ ಚ fruits also, ಬಹು in great quantity, ಉಪಹೃತಮ್ was brought.

I offered Rama rice including a variety of eatables like fruits in great quantity for his food.
ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾಸೀದ್ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ.

ನ ತು ತತ್ಪ್ರತ್ಯಗೃಹ್ಣಾತ್ಸ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಧರ್ಮಮನುಸ್ಮರನ್৷৷2.87.15৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ a man with truth as prowess, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತತ್ಸರ್ವಮ್ all that, ಪ್ರತ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾಸೀತ್ acknowledged ordered, ಸಃ he, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಧರ್ಮಮ್ the duty of a kshatriya, ಅನುಸ್ಮರನ್ remembering, ತತ್ all that, ನ ತು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಗೃಹ್ಣಾತ್ did not accept it.

Rama whose prowess is his truth, acknowledged all that but remembering the duty enjoined on a kshatriya did not accept them.
ನ ಹ್ಯಸ್ಮಾಭಿಃ ಪ್ರತಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಂ ಸಖೇ! ದೇಯಂ ತು ಸರ್ವದಾ.

ಇತಿ ತೇನ ವಯಂ ರಾಜನ್ನನುನೀತಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ৷৷2.87.16৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಸಖೇ! O friend, ಆಸ್ಮಾಭಿಃ by us, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಮ್ should not be received, ಸರ್ವದಾ always, ದೇಯಮ್ should be given, ಇತಿ thus, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the great, ತೇನ by him, ವಯಮ್ we, ಅನುನೀತಾಃ were entreated.

O king! that great Rama entreated us in a friendly manner by saying 'O friend! we should always give to others but should never accept anything from others'.
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಮಾನೀತಂ ಪೀತ್ವಾ ವಾರಿ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಔಪವಾಸ್ಯಂ ತದಾಕಾರ್ಷೀದ್ರಾಘವಸ್ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ৷৷2.87.17৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ the illustrious one, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ತದಾ then, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ by Lakshmana, ಸಮಾನೀತಮ್ brought by, ವಾರಿ water, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ಪೀತ್ವಾ after drinking, ಔಪವಾಸ್ಯಮ್ fasting, ಅಕಾರ್ಷೀತ್ undertook.

Illustrious Rama along with Sita only drank the water brought by Lakshamana and undertook fasting.
ತತಸ್ತು ಜಲಶೇಷೇಣ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋಪ್ಯಕರೋತ್ತದಾ.

ವಾಗ್ಯತಾಸ್ತೇ ತ್ರಯ ಸ್ಸನ್ಧ್ಯಾಂ ಸಮುಪಾಸತ ಸಂಹಿತಾಃ৷৷2.87.18৷৷


ತತಃ ತು thereafter, ತದಾ then, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋಪಿ Lakshmana also, ಜಲಶೇಷೇಣ with the remainder of the water, ಅಕರೋತ್ satisfied his hunger, ತೇ ತ್ರಯಃ those three, ವಾಗ್ಯತಾಃ observing silence, ಸಂಹಿತಾಃ intently, ಸನ್ಧ್ಯಾಮ್ evening worship, ಸಮುಪಾಸತ performed.

Thereafter Lakshmana also drank the remainder of water. Then all the three observing silence intently performed the evening worship.
ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಸ್ತು ತತಃ ಪಶ್ಚಾದಕರೋತ್ಸ್ವಾಸ್ತರಂ ಶುಭಮ್.

ಸ್ವಯಮಾನೀಯ ಬರ್ಹೀಂಷಿ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ರಾಘವಕಾರಣಾತ್৷৷2.87.19৷৷


ತತಃ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ thereafter, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಸ್ತು son of Sumitra on his part, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಬರ್ಹೀಂಷಿ darbha grass, ಆನೀಯ having brought, ರಾಘವಕಾರಣಾತ್ for the sake of Rama, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ಸ್ವಾಸ್ತರಮ್ comfortable bed, ಅಕರೋತ್ prepared.

Therafter, the son of Sumitra (Lakshmana) himself fetched darbha grass and quickly
prepared an auspicious and comfortable bed for Rama.
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸಮಾವಿಶದ್ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸ್ವಾಸ್ತರೇ ಸಹ ಸೀತಯಾ.

ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲ್ಯ ಚ ತಯೋಃ ಪಾದಾವಪಚಕ್ರಾಮ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ৷৷2.87.20৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ on that, ಸ್ವಾಸ್ತರೇ bed, ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ with Sita, ಸಮಾವಿಶತ್ lay down, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ತಯೋಃ their, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲ್ಯ having washed, ಅಪಚಕ್ರಾಮ left for a distant place.

Rama lay down upon the bed along with Sita. Thereafter Lakshmana, having washed their feet, moved to a distant place.
ಏತತ್ತದಿಙ್ಗುದೀಮೂಲಮಿದಮೇವ ಚ ತತ್ತೃಣಮ್.

ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ಸೀತಾ ಚ ರಾತ್ರಿಂ ತಾಂ ಶಯಿತಾವುಭೌ৷৷2.87.21৷৷


ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama as well as, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಉಭೌ both, ತಾಂ ರಾತ್ರಿಮ್ that night, ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ where, ಶಯಿತೌ slept, ತತ್ that, ಇಂಗುದೀಮೂಲಮ್ foot of the ingudi tree, ಏತತ್ this only, ತತ್ that, ತೃಣಂ ಚ grass bed, ಇದಮೇವ this one only.

Here at the foot of the ingudi tree and upon that bed of grass both Rama and Sita rested that night.
ನಿಯಮ್ಯ ಪೃಷ್ಠೇ ತು ತಲಾಙ್ಗುಲಿತ್ರವಾನ್ ಶರೈಸ್ಸುಪೂರ್ಣಾವಿಷುಧೀ ಪರನ್ತಪಃ.

ಮಹಾದ್ಧನು ಸ್ಸಜ್ಯಮುಪೋಹ್ಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಿಶಾಮತಿಷ್ಠತ್ಪರಿತೋಸ್ಯ ಕೇವಲಮ್৷৷2.87.22৷৷


ಪರನ್ತಪಃ scorcher of enemies, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ತಲಾಙ್ಗುಲಿತ್ರವಾನ್ wearing protective covering for his palms and fingers (made of goha-skin), ಶರೈಃ arrows, ಸುಪೂರ್ಣೌ filled with, ಇಷುಧೀ two quivers, ಪೃಷ್ಠೇ on his back, ನಿಯಮ್ಯ strapping, ಸಜ್ಯಮ್ furnished with string, ಮಹತ್ great, ಧನುಃ bow, ಉಪೋಹ್ಯ holding, ನಿಶಾಮ್ during that night, ಅಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪರಿತಃ surrounding, ಅತಿಷ್ಠತ್ ಕೇವಲಮ್ stood throughout.

Lakshmana, the scorcher of enemies, wearing protective covering for his palms and fingers (made of goha-skin), strapping on his back two quivers filled with arrows,
holding a great bow, strung ready, stood sentinel throughout the night guarding the surrounding.
ತತ ಸ್ತ್ವಹಂಚೋತ್ತಮಬಾಣಚಾಪಧೃತ್ ಸ್ಥಿತೋಭವಂ ತತ್ರ ಸ ಯತ್ರ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ.

ಅತನ್ದ್ರಿತೈರ್ಜ್ಞಾತಿಭಿರಾತ್ತಕಾರ್ಮುಕೈರ್ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಕಲ್ಪಂ ಪರಿಪಾಲಯಂಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.87.23৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಅಹಂ ತು as for me, ತದಾ then, ಉತ್ತಮಬಾಣಚಾಪಧೃತ್ holding the best of arrows and bow, ಅತನ್ದ್ರಿತೈಃ with the indefatigable, ಆತ್ತಕಾರ್ಮುಕೈಃ armed with bows, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಭಿಃ with my kinsmen, ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಕಲ್ಪಮ್ comparable to Indra, ಪರಿಪಾಲಯನ್ while protecting, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಯತ್ರ wherever, ತತ್ರ there, ಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಅಭವಮ್ remained standing.

Then, holding the best of arrows and bow along with my indefatigable kinsmen similarly armed with bows, I stood by the side of Lakshmana guarding Rama who is comparable to Indra.
