[Guha ferries Bharata, Satrughna and all others across Ganga --- Bharata sets out to meet sage Bharadwaja.]

ಉಷ್ಯ ರಾತ್ರಿಂ ತು ತತ್ರೈವ ಗಙ್ಗಾಕೂಲೇ ಸ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಭರತಃ ಕಾಲ್ಯಮುತ್ಥಾಯ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.89.1৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ born in the race of Raghu, ಸಃ ಭರತಃ that Bharata, ತತ್ರ there, ಗಙ್ಗಾಕೂಲೇ ಏವ on the bank of the river Ganga only, ರಾತ್ರಿಮ್ night, ಉಷ್ಯ having stayed, ಕಾಲ್ಯಮ್ at day-break, ಉತ್ಥಾಯ rising, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಮ್ Satrughna, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Bharata got up at daybreak after spending the night on the bank of the Ganga at that very place where Rama, the descendent of Raghu, had stayed. And said these words to Satrughna:
ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಕಿಂ ಶೇಷೇ ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಂ ಗುಹಮ್.

ಶೀಘ್ರಮಾನಯ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ ತಾರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.89.2৷৷


ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನ Satrughna, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ arise, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಶೇಷೇ are you asleep, ತೇ for you, ಭದ್ರಮ್ blessings to you, ನಿಷಾದಾಧಿಪತಿಮ್ overlord of Nishada, ಗುಹಮ್ Guha, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಆನಯ fetch, ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್ the army, ತಾರಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ he will help us in ferrying across.

O Satrughna, blessings to you! Why are you still alseep? Arise! fetch Guha the king of the nishadas quickly. He will ferry the army across the river.
ಜಾಗರ್ಮಿ ನಾಹಂ ಸ್ವಪಿಮಿ ತಮೇವಾರ್ಯಂ ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯನ್.

ಇತ್ಯೇವಮಬ್ರವೀದ್ಭ್ರಾತ್ತಾ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋಪಿ ಪ್ರಚೋದಿತಃ৷৷2.89.3৷৷


ಭ್ರಾತಾ the brother, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋಪಿ Satrughna also, ಪ್ರಚೋದಿತಃ having been urged upon, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಮ್ that, ಆರ್ಯಮ್ ಏವ about esteemed brother Rama only, ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ thinking about, ಜಾಗರ್ಮಿ I am
awake, ನ ಸ್ವಪಿಮಿ not sleeping, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ in this way, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Urged by his brother Bharata, Satrughna replied 'I am not asleep. I am awake. I am deeply thinking of our esteemed brother, Rama'
ಇತಿ ಸಂವದತೋರೇವಮನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಂ ನರಸಿಂಹಯೋಃ.

ಆಗಮ್ಯ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ ಕಾಲೇ ಗುಹೋ ಭರತಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.89.4৷৷


ನರಸಿಂಹಯೋಃ lions among men, Bharata and Satrughna, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ in this way, ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಮ್ with one another, ಸಂವದತೋಃ while both of them were conversing, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ಕಾಲೇ at appropriate time, ಆಗಮ್ಯ having arrived, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

While the two lions among men, Bharata and Satrughna were thus conversing with each other, Guha came in the appropriate time and said to Bharata with folded palms:
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸುಖಂ ನದೀತೀರೇವಾತ್ಸೀಃ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ ಶರ್ವರೀಮ್.

ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಸಹ ಸೈನ್ಯಸ್ಯ ತಾವತ್ಸರ್ವಮನಾಮಯಮ್৷৷2.89.5৷৷


ಕಾಕುತ್ಥ್ಸ O scion of the Kakutstha race (Bharata), ಶರ್ವರೀಮ್ night, ನದೀತೀರೇ on the bank of the river, ಸುಖಮ್ comfortably, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ ವಾತ್ಸೀಃ you had passed, I hope, ಸಹ ಸೈನ್ಯಸ್ಯ along with the army, ತೇ to you, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಅನಾಮಯಂ ತಾವತ್ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ there was no inconvenience, I trust.

O scion of the Kakutstha race (Bharata)! I trust, you and your army passed the night on the river bank comfortably without any inconvenience.
ಗುಹಸ್ಯ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತತ್ತು ಸ್ನೇಹಾದುದೀರಿತಮ್.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾನುವಶೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭರತೋಪೀದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.89.6৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of Rama, ಅನುವಶಃ obedient, ಭರತೋಪಿ Bharata too, ಸ್ನೇಹಾತ್ out of affection, ಉದೀರಿತಮ್ uttered, ತತ್ that, ಗುಹಸ್ಯ Guha's, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on hearing, ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

On hearing Guha's affectionate words Bharata, ever obedient to Rama, replied:
ಸುಖಾ ನ ಶ್ಶರ್ವರೀ ರಾಜನ್! ಪೂಜಿತಾಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ತೇ ವಯಮ್.

ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ತು ನೌಭಿರ್ಬಹ್ವೀಭಿರ್ದಾಶಾಸ್ಸನ್ತಾರಯನ್ತು ನಃ৷৷2.89.7৷৷


ರಾಜನ್! O king!, ನಃ for us, ಶರ್ವರೀ the night, ಸುಖಾ comfortable, ವಯಮ್ we, ತೇ to (by) you, ಪೂಜಿತಾಶ್ಚಾಪಿ have been honoured, ದಾಶಾಃ fishermen, ಬಹ್ವೀಭಿಃ by many, ನೌಭಿಃ boats, ನಃ us, ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ the river Ganga, ಸನ್ತಾರಯನ್ತು please, ferry us across.

O king (Guha)! the night passed comfortably for us. We have been honoured by you in many ways. Let your fishermen be ordered to ferry us across the Ganga in their boats.
ತತೋ ಗುಹ ಸ್ಸನ್ತ್ವರಿತಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭರತಶಾಸನಮ್.

ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ನಗರಂ ತಂ ಜ್ಞಾತಿಜನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.89.8৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ಸನ್ತ್ವರಿತಮ್ quickly, ಭರತಶಾಸನಮ್ at Bharata's command, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ನಗರಮ್ his establishment, ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ತಮ್ that, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಜನಮ್ to his relations, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Then at Bharata's command Guha returned to his habitation quickly and said to his relations:
ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠತ ಪ್ರಬುಧ್ಯಧ್ವಂ ಭದ್ರಮಸ್ತು ಚ ವಸ್ಸದಾ.

ನಾವ ಸ್ಸಮನುಕರ್ಷಧ್ವಂ ತಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮ ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.89.9৷৷


ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠತ arise, ಪ್ರಬುಧ್ಯಧ್ವಮ್ awake, ಸದಾ always, ವಃ ಭದ್ರಮ್ ಅಸ್ತು be blessed, ನಾವಃ the boats, ಸಮನುಕರ್ಷಧ್ವಮ್ haul down, ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್ the army, ತಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮ we shall ferry them across.

Arise and awake. May you be ever blessed. Haul down the boats into the river. We have to ferry the army (across the river).
ತೇ ತಥೋಕ್ತಾ ಸ್ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ ತ್ವರಿತಾ ರಾಜಶಾಸನಾತ್.

ಪಞ್ಚನಾವಾಂ ಶತಾನ್ಯಾಶು ಸಮಾನಿನ್ಯುಸ್ಸಮನ್ತತಃ৷৷2.89.10৷৷


ತಥಾ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾಃ addressed, ತೇ they, ರಾಜಶಾಸನಾತ್ by the king's command, ತ್ವರಿತಾಃ in haste, ಆಶು immediately, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ from every direction, ನಾವಾಮ್ of the boats, ಪಞ್ಚಶತಾನಿ five hundreds, ಸಮಾನಿನ್ಯುಃ brought.

On hearing these words, they arose in haste and immediately brought five hundred boats from every direction in accordance with the command of their king (Guha).
ಅನ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಕವಿಜ್ಞೇಯಾ ಮಹಾಘಂಟಾಧರಾ ವರಾಃ.

ಶೋಭಮಾನಾಃ ಪತಾಕಾಭಿರ್ಯುಕ್ತವಾತಾಸ್ಸುಸಂಹತಾಃ৷৷2.89.11৷৷


ಮಹಾಘಂಟಾಧರಾಃ fitted with large bells, ವರಾಃ excellent, ಪತಾಕಾಭಿಃ with flags, ಶೋಭಮಾನಾಃ looking magnificent, ಯುಕ್ತವಾತಾಃ filled with sails, ಸುಸಂಹತಾಃ built solidly, ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಕವಿಜ್ಞೇಯಾಃ known as Swastika, ಅನ್ಯಾಃ also some other boats (brought).

They brought excellent boats known as Swastika, solidly built, they lookd magnificent, filled with large bells, sails and flags.
ತತ ಸ್ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಕವಿಜ್ಞೇಯಾಂ ಪಾಣ್ಡುಕಮ್ಬಲಸಂವೃತಾಮ್.

ಸನನ್ದಿಘೋಷಾಂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀಂ ಗುಹೋ ನಾವಮುಪಾಹರತ್৷৷2.89.12৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಗುಹಃ Guha, ಪಾಣ್ಡುಕಮ್ಬಲಸಂವೃತಾಮ್ covered with white canvas, ಸನನ್ದಿಘೋಷಾಮ್ generating aptivating sounds, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀಂ auspicious, ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಕವಿಜ್ಞೇಯಾಮ್ known as Swastika, ನಾವಮ್ boat, ಉಪಾಹರತ್ brought.

Then Guha personally brought an auspicious boat known as Swastika covered with white canvas and generating captivating sounds.
ತಾಮಾರುರೋಹ ಭರತಶ್ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ಯಾಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾ ರಾಜಯೋಷಿತಃ৷৷2.89.13৷৷

ಪುರೋಹಿತಶ್ಚ ತತ್ಪೂರ್ವಂ ಗುರವೋ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಶ್ಚ ಯೇ.

ಅನನ್ತರಂ ರಾಜದಾರಾಸ್ತದೈವ ಶಕಟಾಪಣಾಃ৷৷2.89.14৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತಾಮ್ ಆರುರೋಹ boarded it, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ of great strength, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಶ್ಚ Satrughna also, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಚ Kausalya, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ Sumitra, ಅನ್ಯಾಃ other, ಯಾಃ ರಾಜಯೋಷಿತಃ other royal women, ತತ್ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ before them, ಪುರೋಹಿತಶ್ಚ family priest (Vasistha), ಗುರವಃ preceptors, ಯೇ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಶ್ಚ such brahmins, ಅನನ್ತರಮ್ thereafter, ರಾಜದಾರಾಃ king's wives, ತಥೈವ also, ಶಕಟಾಪಣಾಃ wagons and supplies.

The family priest (Vasistha) and other brahmins were the first to board. Next mighty
Bharata and Satrughna, Kausalya, Sumitra, women of the palace including the other wives of the king and wagons and supplies followed.
ಆವಾಸಮಾದೀಪಯತಾಂ ತೀರ್ಥಂ ಚಾಪ್ಯವಗಾಹತಾಮ್.

ಭಾಣ್ಡಾನಿ ಚಾದದಾನಾನಾಂ ಘೋಷಸ್ತ್ರಿದಿವಮಸ್ಪೃಶತ್৷৷2.89.15৷৷


ಆವಾಸಮ್ the shelters in that camp, ಆದೀಪಯತಾಮ್ those who are burning, ತೀರ್ಥಂ ಚಾಪಿ through the descent of the river, ಅವಗಾಹತಾಮ್ those who are going down, ಭಾಣ್ಡಾನಿ supplies, ಆದದಾನಾನಾಮ್ of transporting, ಘೋಷಃ clamour, ತ್ರಿದಿವಮ್ the heaven, ಅಸ್ಪೃಶತ್ touched.

The clamour of the people setting fire to the temporary shelters in that camp, descending down the river and transporting the supplies into the boats reached the heaven.
ಪತಾಕಿನ್ಯಸ್ತು ತಾ ನಾವಸ್ಸ್ವಯಂ ದಾಶೈರಧಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ.

ವಹನ್ತ್ಯೋ ಜನಮಾರೂಢಂ ತದಾ ಸಮ್ಪೇತುರಾಶುಗಾಃ৷৷2.89.16৷৷


ಪತಾಕಿನ್ಯಃ (adorned) with flags, ದಾಶೈಃ by the fishermen, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ themselves, ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ occupied, ತಾಃ ನಾವಃ those boats, ತದಾ then, ಆರೂಢಮ್ boarded, ಜನಮ್ men, ವಹ್ನತ್ಯಃ carrying, ಆಶುಗಾಃ swiftly rowing men, ಸಮ್ಪೇತುಃ moved.

Those boats adorned with flags were propelled by the fishermen occupying them. They sailed with men rowing on board fast.
ನಾರೀಣಾಮಭಿಪೂರ್ಣಾ ಸ್ತು ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ ಕಾಶ್ಚಿಚ್ಚ ವಾಜಿನಾಮ್.

ಕಾಶ್ಚಿದತ್ರ ವಹನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಯಾನಯುಗ್ಯಂ ಮಹಾಧನಮ್৷৷2.89.17৷৷


ಅತ್ರ there, ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ some boats, ನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ with women, ಅಭಿಪೂರ್ಣಾಃ were filled with, ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ some others, ವಾಜಿನಾಮ್ with horses, ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ while still others, ಯಾನಯುಗ್ಯಮ್ the draught animals for drawing carriages, ಮಹಾಧನಮ್ great treasures, ವಹನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ were transporting.

Some boats were filled with women, some others with horses. while still others
transported draught animals for drawing carriages and the great treasures.
ತಾ ಸ್ಸ್ಮ ಗತ್ವಾ ಪರಂ ತೀರಮವರೋಪ್ಯ ಚ ತಂ ಜನಮ್.

ನಿವೃತ್ತಾಃ ಕಾಣ್ಡಚಿತ್ರಾಣಿ ಕ್ರಿಯನ್ತೇ ದಾಶಬನ್ಧುಭಿಃ৷৷2.89.18৷৷


ತಾಃ those, ಪರಂ ತೀರಮ್ the other bank, ಗತ್ವಾ having reached, ತಂ ಜನಮ್ the men, ಅವರೋಪ್ಯ disembarked, ನಿವೃತ್ತಾಃ ಸ್ಮ returned, ದಾಶಬನ್ಧುಭಿಃ the fisherfolk, ಕಾಣ್ಡಚಿತ್ರಾಣಿ lovely formations with their craft, ಕ್ರಿಯನ್ತೇ ಸ್ಮ exhibited.

Having reached the other bank, the men disembarked. While returning, the fisherfolk exhibited their craft of lovely formations.
ಸವೈಜಯನ್ತಾಸ್ತು ಗಜಾ ಗಜಾರೋಹಪ್ರಚೋದಿತಾಃ.

ತರನ್ತ ಸ್ಸ್ಮ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ ಸಧ್ವಜಾ ಇವ ಪರ್ವತಾಃ৷৷2.89.19৷৷


ಸವೈಜಯನ್ತಾಃ embellished with banners, ಗಜಾರೋಹಪ್ರಚೋದಿತಾಃ goaded by their mahouts, ಗಜಾಃ the elephants, ತರನ್ತಃ while crossing the water, ಸಧ್ವಜಾಃ with flags, ಪರ್ವತಾಃ ಇವ like mountains, ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ್ತೇ ಸ್ಮ were shining.

The elephants, embellished with banners and goaded by their mahouts looked
splendid like mountains with banners while crossing in the water.
ನಾವಸ್ತ್ವಾರುರುಹುಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯೇ ಪ್ಲವೈಸ್ತೇರು ಸ್ತಥಾಪರೇ.

ಅನ್ಯೇ ಕುಮ್ಭಘಟೈಸ್ತೇರುರನ್ಯೇತೇರುಶ್ಚ ಬಾಹುಭಿಃ৷৷2.89.20৷৷


ಅನ್ಯೇ other, ನಾವಃ boats, ಆರುರುಹುಶ್ಚ boarded, ಅಪರೇ others, ತಥಾ like that, ಪ್ಲವೈಃ on rafts, ತೇರುಃ crossed, ಅನ್ಯೇ others, ಕುಮ್ಭಘಟೈಃ with large pots, ತೇರುಃ crossed, ಅನ್ಯೇ others, ಬಾಹುಭಿಃ with their arms, ತೇರುಃ ಚ crossed.

Only some of the people were able to board the boats. Some others crossed on rafts and on large pots. Still others swam with their arms.
ಸಾ ಪುಣ್ಯಾ ಧ್ವಜಿನೀ ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ದಾಶೈಸ್ಸನ್ತಾರಿತಾ ಸ್ವಯಮ್.

ಮೈತ್ರೇ ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇ ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ಪ್ರಯಾಗವನಮುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.89.21৷৷


ದಾಶೈಃ by the fishermen, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ themselves, ಗಙ್ಗಾಮ್ the river Ganga, ಸನ್ತಾರಿತಾ ferried over, ಪುಣ್ಯಾ auspicious, ಸಾ ಧ್ವಜಿನೀ army, ಮೈತ್ರೇ ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇ at the auspicious hour of Maitra, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ great, ಪ್ರಯಾಗವನಮ್ forest of Prayaga, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ reached.

The auspicious army, ferried across the river Ganga by the fishermen, reached the great forest of Prayaga at the auspicious hour of Maitra.
ಆಶ್ವಾಸಯಿತ್ವಾ ಚ ಚಮೂಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ನಿವೇಶಯಿತ್ವಾ ಚ ಯಥೋಪಜೋಷಮ್.

ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮೃಷಿಪ್ರವರ್ಯ ಮೃತ್ವಿಗ್ವೃತಸ್ಸನ್ಭರತಃ ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥೇ৷৷2.89.22৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ the noble one, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಚಮೂಮ್ the army, ಆಶ್ವಾಸಯಿತ್ವಾ having rested, ಯಥೋಪಜೋಷಮ್ according to their pleasure, ನಿವೇಶಯಿತ್ವಾ having encamped, ಋಷಿಪ್ರವರ್ಯಮ್ the distinguished rishi, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ Bharadwaja, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಋತ್ವಿಗ್ವೃತಸ್ಸನ್ surrounded by his priests, ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥೇ set out.

The noble Bharata, got his army encamped according to their pleasure and set out, accompanied by his priests, to see the distinguished sage Bharadwaja.
ಸ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಸ್ಯಾಶ್ರಮಮಭ್ಯುಪೇತ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನೋ ದೇವಪುರೋಹಿತಸ್ಯ.

ದದರ್ಶ ರಮ್ಯೋಟಜವೃಕ್ಷಷಣ್ಡಂ ಮಹದ್ವನಂ ವಿಪ್ರವರಸ್ಯ ರಮ್ಯಮ್৷৷2.89.23৷৷


ಸಃ Bharata, ದೇವಪುರೋಹಿತಸ್ಯ official priest of the gods, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the eminent, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಸ್ಯ brahmin's, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಅಭ್ಯುಪೇತ್ಯ having approached, ರಮ್ಯೋಟಜವೃಕ್ಷಷಣ್ಡಮ್ delightful huts and multitude of trees, ವಿಪ್ರವರಸ್ಯ of the best brahmins, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ charming, ಮಹತ್ ವನಮ್ great forest, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Approaching the hermitage of Bharadwaja, the eminent brahmin and official priest of the gods, Bharata saw the delightful huts and trees of the charming great forest.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕೋನನವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the eightyninth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
