[Bharadwaja welcomes Bharata and Vasistha --- Bharata discloses his intention to get back Rama.]

ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಶ್ರಮಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕ್ರೋಶಾದೇವ ನರರ್ಷಭಃ.

ಬಲಂ ಸರ್ವಮವಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ ಜಗಾಮ ಸಹ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.90.1৷৷

ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮೇವ ಹಿ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೋ ನ್ಯಸ್ತಶಸ್ತ್ರಪರಿಚ್ಛದಃ.

Bharata, the knower of righteous ways and the best among men, saw the hermitage of Bharadwaja from a distance of one krosa and brought his entire army to a halt. He laid aside all his royal robes and weapons. Clad in silk garments, he went on foot along with his ministers, with the family priest Vasistha ahead of him.

ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಸ್ತಾನವಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ ಜಗಾಮಾನುಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್৷৷2.90.3৷৷


ತತಃ then, ರಾಘವಃ scion of the Raghu race (Bharata), ತಾನ್ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ those ministers, ತಸ್ಯ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಸ್ಯ that Bharadwaja's, ಸಂದರ್ಶನೇ within sight, ಅವಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ halted, ಅನುಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್ following his priest ಜಗಾಮ went.

Then the scion of the Raghu race (Bharata) halted his ministers within sight of Bharadwaja's (hermitage) and went along following his priest Vasistha.
ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮಥ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ.

ಸಞ್ಚಚಾಲಾಸನಾತ್ತೂರ್ಣಂ ಶಿಷ್ಯಾನರ್ಘ್ಯಮಿತಿ ಬ್ರುವನ್৷৷2.90.4৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ the great ascetic, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮ್ Vasistha, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ on seeing, ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಮ್ ಇತಿ bring offerings of water, ಶಿಷ್ಯಾನ್ to disciples, ಬ್ರುವನ್ saying, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ soon, ಆಸನಾತ್ from seat, ಸಞ್ಚಚಾಲ moved.

On seeing Vasistha, the great ascetic Bharadwaja immediately left his seat and said to his disciples, Bring offerings of water.
ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಭರತೇನಾಭಿವಾದಿತಃ.

ಅಬುದ್ಧ್ಯತ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಸ್ಸುತಂ ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ ತಮ್৷৷2.90.5৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ radiant Bharadwaja, ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ with Vasistha, ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ having met, ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ಅಭಿವಾದಿತಃ greeted, ತಮ್ him, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ಸುತಮ್ as son, ಅಬುದ್ಧ್ಯತ knew of.

After meeting Vasistha and greeted by Bharata, the radiant Bharadwaja could recognize he was the son of Dasaratha.
ತಾಭ್ಯಾಮರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಚ ಪಾದ್ಯಂ ಚ ದತ್ವಾ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ಫಲಾನಿ ಚ.

ಆನುಪೂರ್ವ್ಯಾಚ್ಛ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಕುಶಲಂ ಕುಲೇ৷৷2.90.6৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of righteous ways (Bharadwaja), ಆನುಪೂರ್ವ್ಯಾತ್ in order, ತಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ to both of them, ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಚ welcome-offering, ಪಾದ್ಯಂ ಚ water for washing feet, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ thereafter, ಫಲಾನಿ
ಚ fruits, ದತ್ವಾ having given, ಕುಲೇ in the family, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ enquired.

Offering them both in order arghya (welcome-offering), water to wash their feet and fruits in accordance with the practice, he enquired Bharata about the welfare of the family.
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಬಲೇ ಕೋಶೇ ಮಿತ್ರೇಷ್ವಪಿ ಚ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಷು.

ಜಾನನ್ ದಶರಥಂ ವೃತ್ತಂ ನ ರಾಜಾನಮುದಾಹರತ್৷৷2.90.7৷৷


ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ಬಲೇ in the army, ಕೋಶೇ in the treasury, ಮಿತ್ರೇಷ್ವಪಿ ಚ of the friends also, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಷು of the ministers, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ well-being, ಜಾನನ್ knowingly, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ದಶರಥಮ್ Dasaratha, ನೋದಾಹರತ್ did not mention.

He enquired about the welfare of Ayodhya, of the army, treasury, friends and the ministers. But knowingly did not mention about Dasaratha's well-being (the knew Dasaratha was dead).
ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ಭರತಶ್ಚೈನಂ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛತುರನಾಮಯಮ್.

ಶರೀರೇಗ್ನಿಷು ವೃಕ್ಷೇಷು ಶಿಷ್ಯೇಷು ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಷು৷৷2.90.8৷৷


ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ Vasistha, ಭರತಶ್ಚ also Bharata, ಏನಮ್ him, ಶರೀರೇ about his health, ಅಗ್ನಿಷು his sacred fires, ವೃಕ್ಷೇಷು his trees, ಶಿಷ್ಯೇಷು his disciples, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಷು about animals and birds, ಅನಾಮಯಮ್ well being, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛತುಃ enquired.

Vasistha and Bharata also enquired about his health and welfare of his sacred fires, his disciples, animals and birds and trees of the hermitage.
ತಥೇತಿ ತತ್ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ.

ಭರತಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚೇದಂ ರಾಘವಸ್ನೇಹಬನ್ಧನಾತ್৷৷2.90.9৷৷


ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ the great ascetic, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ತಥೇತಿ saying so, so, ತತ್ that welfare, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಯ informing, ರಾಘವಸ್ನೇಹಬನ್ಧನಾತ್ out of affection for Rama, ಭರತಂ ಪ್ರತಿ addressing

Saying, all is well, the great ascetic Bharadwaja, out of his affection for Rama, said to Bharata:
ಕಿಮಿಹಾಗಮನೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ತವ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಶಾಸತಃ.

ಏತದಾಚಕ್ಷ್ವ ಮೇ ಸರ್ವಂ ನ ಹಿ ಮೇ ಶುದ್ಧ್ಯತೇ ಮನಃ৷৷2.90.10৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಪ್ರಶಾಸತಃ while ruling over, ತವ for you, ಇಹ here, ಆಗಮನೇ in the arrival, ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ reason, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಏತತ್ all this, ಸರ್ವಮ್ completely, ಮೇ to me, ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ tell, ಮೇ to me, ಮನಃ my mind, ನ ಹಿ ಶುದ್ಧ್ಯತೇ is not clear about it.

Why have you come here when you ought to be ruling the kingdom? Tell me everything about this. My mind is not clear in this matter.
ಸುಷುವೇ ಯಮಮಿತ್ರಘ್ನಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನಮ್.

ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ ಸಭಾರ್ಯೋ ಯಶ್ಚಿರಂ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೋ ವನಮ್৷৷2.90.11৷৷

ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ ಸ್ತ್ರೀನಿಯುಕ್ತೇನ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಯೋಸೌ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ವನವಾಸೀ ಭವೇತೀಹ ಸಮಾಃ ಕಿಲ ಚತುರ್ದಶ৷৷2.90.12৷৷

ಕಚ್ಛಿನ್ನ ತಸ್ಯಾಪಾಪಸ್ಯ ಪಾಪಂ ಕರ್ತುಮಿಹೇಚ್ಛಸಿ.

ಅಕಣ್ಟಕಂ ಭೋಕ್ತುಮನಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ತಸ್ಯಾನುಜಸ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.90.13৷৷


ಅಮಿತ್ರಘ್ನಮ್ destroyer of enemies, ಆನನ್ದವರ್ಧನಮ್ enhances the delight of, ಯಂ that Rama, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಸುಷುವೇ gave birth, ಯಃ that, ಸಭಾರ್ಯಃ with his wife, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ along with his brother, ಚಿರಮ್ for a long time, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಃ has been banished, ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ illustrious, ಯಃ ಅಸೌ that Rama, ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ನಿಯುಕ್ತೇನ urged by a woman, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by his father, ಚತುರ್ದಶ fourteen, ಸಮಾಃ years, ವನವಾಸೀ living in the forest, ಭವ shall become, ಇತಿ thus, ಇಹ here, ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ has been ordered, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಅಪಾಪಸ್ಯ sinless, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಅನುಜಸ್ಯ ಚ brother, ಪಾಪಮ್ harm, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಅಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್ without obstacles, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಭೋಕ್ತುಮನಾಃ to enjoy, ಇಹ here, ನ ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ not intending to do so?

Rama, destroyer of enemies and enhancer of the delight of his mother Kausalya, has been banished to the forest for a long time along with his wife and brother. That illustrious one has been ordered by his father to live in the forest for fourteen years through the pursuasion of a woman. To enjoy the kingdom without obstacles do you intend to cause any harm to that irreproachable Rama and his brother?
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಂ ಭರತಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ಪರ್ಯಶ್ರುನಯನೋ ದುಃಖಾದ್ವಾಚಾ ಸಂಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ৷৷2.90.14৷৷


ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ addressed, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ದುಃಖಾತ್ with grief, ಪರ್ಯಶ್ರುನಯನಃ with tears in his eyes, ಸಂಸಜ್ಜಮಾನಯಾ with stumbling, ವಾಚಾ words, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ to Bharadwaja, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ said in reply.

At these words, Bharata, eyes filled with tears of grief, replied to Bharadwaja in a stumbling voice:
ಹತೋಸ್ಮಿ ಯದಿ ಮಾಮೇವಂ ಭಗವಾನಪಿ ಮನ್ಯತೇ.

ಮತ್ತೋ ನ ದೋಷಮಾಶಙ್ಕೇ ನೈವಂ ಮಾಮನುಶಾಸ್ತು ಹಿ.2.90.15৷৷


ಭಗವಾನಪಿ even one venerable like you, ಮಾಮ್ about me, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಮನ್ಯತೇ ಯದಿ if you think, ಹತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am done with, ಮತ್ತಃ from me, ದೋಷಮ್ evil, ನ ಆಶಙ್ಕೇ do not suspect, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ನ ಅನುಶಾಸ್ತು ಹಿ not rebuke.

When one so venerable like you too misunderstands me, I am gone. There is no danger for him from me. Do not rebuke me this way.
ನ ಚೈತದಿಷ್ಟಂ ಮಾತಾ ಮೇ ಯದವೋಚನ್ಮದನ್ತರೇ.

ನಾಹಮೇತೇನ ತುಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ ನ ತದ್ವಚನಮಾದದೇ৷৷2.90.16৷৷


ಮೇ ಮಾತಾ my mother, ಮದನ್ತರೇ in my absence, ಯತ್ whatever, ಅವೋಚತ್ said, ಏತತ್ that one, ಇಷ್ಟಮ್ to my liking, ನ ಚ not, ಏತೇನ by this, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತುಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ pleased, ನ not, ತದ್ವಚನಂ those words, ನ
ಆದದೇ I do not accept.

I do not approve of whatever my mother said in my absence. I am not happy with those words and I do not accept them.
ಅಹಂ ತು ತಂ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮುಪಯಾತಃ ಪ್ರಸಾದಕಃ.

ಪ್ರತಿನೇತುಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಚ ಪಾದೌ ತಸ್ಯಾಭಿವನ್ದಿತುಮ್৷৷2.90.17৷৷


ಅಹಂ ತು as for me, ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ the best among men, Rama, ತಮ್ him, ಪ್ರಸಾದಕಃ after persuading, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ಪ್ರತಿನೇತುಮ್ to take him back, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಅಭಿವನ್ದಿತುಮ್ ಚ to worship, ಉಪಯಾತಃ I have come.

I have come to worship the feet of Rama, the best of men and persuade him to return to Ayodhya.
ತ್ವಂ ಮಾಮೇವಂಗತಂ ಮತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಸಾದಂ ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.

ಶಂಸ ಮೇ ಭಗವನ್ರಾಮಃ ಕ್ವ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಿ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ৷৷2.90.18৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O Lord, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಏವಂಗತಮ್ in these circumstances, ಮತ್ವಾ having considered, ಪ್ರಸಾದಮ್ kindness, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ be pleased, ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ lord of the earth, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಿ now, ಕ್ವ where, ಮೇ to me, ಶಂಸ tell.

O venerable one! in consideration of the circumstances I am in, be kind to me and tell me the whereabouts of Rama, lord of the earth.
ವಶಿಷ್ಠಾದಿಭಿಃ ಋತ್ವಿಗ್ಭಿರ್ಯಾಚಿತೋ ಭಗವಾಂಸ್ತತಃ.

ಉವಾಚ ತಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ ಪ್ರಸಾದಾದ್ಭರತಂ ವಚಃ.2.90.19৷৷


ತತಃ then, ವಶಿಷ್ಠಾದಿಭಿಃ by Vasistha and others, ಋತ್ವಿಗ್ಭಿಃ by the priests, ಯಾಚಿತಃ besought, ಭಗವಾನ್ the venerable one, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ with pleasure, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ವಚಃ these words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Likewise besought by Vasistha and other priests, the venerable Bharadwaja was pleased to tell Bharata:
ತ್ವಯ್ಯೇತತ್ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ರಾಘವವಂಶಜೇ.

ಗುರುವೃತ್ತಿರ್ದಮಶ್ಚೈವ ಸಾಧೂನಾಮನುಯಾಯಿತಾ৷৷2.90.20৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ O best of men, ಗುರುವೃತ್ತಿ: conduct towards spiritual preceptors, ದಮಶ್ಚೈವ control over senses, ಸಾಧೂನಾಮ್ of virtuous people, ಅನುಯಾಯಿತಾ following, ಏತತ್ all this, ರಾಘವವಂಶಜೇ born in the Raghu race, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ is appropriate.

O best of men (Bharata)! your conduct towards the preceptors, your self-restraint and devotion to the virtuous are all in keeping with those born in the race of Raghu.
ಜಾನೇ ಚೈತನ್ಮನಸ್ಥಂ ತೇ ದೃಢೀಕರಣಮಸ್ತ್ವಿತಿ.

ಅಪೃಚ್ಛಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ತಥಾತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಸಮಭಿವರ್ಧಯನ್৷৷2.90.21৷৷


ತೇ your, ಮನಸ್ಥಮ್ feelings of your heart, ಏತತ್ this, ಜಾನೇ ಚ I am aware, ದೃಢೀಕರಣಮ್ ಅಸ್ತು let it be confirmed, ಇತಿ in this manner, (ತವ your), ಕೀರ್ತಿಮ್ fame, ಅತ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ greatly, ಸಮಭಿವರ್ಧಯನ್ to increase it, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಅಪೃಚ್ಛಮ್ I asked.

I am aware of the feelings in your heart. Even then I enquired in order to confirm it and to further your fame.
ಜಾನೇ ಚ ರಾಮಂ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಂ ಸಸೀತಂ ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್.

ಅಸೌ ವಸತಿ ತೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೇ ಮಹಾಗಿರೌ৷৷2.90.22৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ knower of righteousness (Rama), ಸಸೀತಮ್ with Sita, ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ with Lakshmana, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಜಾನೇ ಚ I know, ಅಸೌ ತೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ this your brother, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೇ in Chitrakuta, ಮಹಾಗಿರೌ mountain, ವಸತಿ is living.

I know your brother who is conversant with righteousness is living on Chitrakuta mountain with Sita and Lakshmana.
ಶ್ವಸ್ತು ಗನ್ತಾಸಿ ತಂ ದೇಶಂ ವಸಾದ್ಯ ಸಹ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ.

ಏತನ್ಮೇ ಕುರು ಸುಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ ಕಾಮಂ ಕಾಮಾರ್ಥಕೋವಿದ৷৷2.90.23৷৷


ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ to that place, ಶ್ವಃ tomorow, ಗನ್ತಾಸಿ shall go, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಸ್ಸಹ along with ministers, ವಸ you may stay, ಸುಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ O supremely sagacious prince, ಕಾಮಾರ್ಥಕೋವಿದ who is aware of kama (desire) and artha (prosperity), ಮೇ my, ಏತಮ್ this, ಕಾಮಂ desire, ಕುರು fulfil.

O supremely sagacious prince gifted with the knowledge of kama (desire) and artha (wealth), tomorrow you go, but to night stay here with your ministers and fulfil my desire.
ತತಸ್ತಥೇತ್ಯೇವಮುದಾರದರ್ಶನಃ ಪ್ರತೀತರೂಪೋ ಭರತೋಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಚಃ.

ಚಕಾರ ಬುದ್ಧಿಂ ಚ ತದಾ ತದಾಶ್ರಮೇ ನಿಶಾನಿವಾಸಾಯ ನರಾಧಿಪಾತ್ಮಜಃ৷৷2.90.24৷৷


ಉದಾರದರ್ಶನಃ a man of liberal outlook, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪ್ರತೀತರೂಪಃ expressing his intention, ತತಃ then, ತಥಾ be it so, ಇತ್ಯೇವಮ್ saying, ವಚಃ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ತದಾ then, ನರಾಧಿಪಾತ್ಮಜಃ son of the king, ತದಾಶ್ರಮೇ in that hermitage, ನಿಶಾನಿವಾಸಾಯ to spend the night, ಬುದ್ಧಿಮ್ decision, ಚಕಾರ made.

A man of liberal disposition, Bharata expressed his intention, saying, 'Be it so'. Then the prince made up him mind to spend the might in that hermitage.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ನವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the ninetieth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
