[Bharata takes leave of Bharadwaja --- departs for mount Chitrakuta.]

ತತಸ್ತಾಂ ರಜನೀಮುಷ್ಯ ಭರತಸ್ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಃ.

ಕೃತಾತಿಥ್ಯೋ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಂ ಕಾಮಾದಭಿಜಗಾಮ ಹ৷৷2.92.1৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಕೃತಾತಿಥ್ಯಃ having received the hospitality, ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಃ with his retinue, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತಾಂ ರಜನೀಮ್ that night, ಉಷ್ಯ having spent, ಕಾಮಾತ್ intention of, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ Bharadwaja, ಅಭಿಜಗಾಮ ಹ approached.

Bharata with his retinue received the hospitality and spent the night at Bharadwaja's ashram. Then he approached Bharadwaja on his own.
ತಂ ಋಷಿಃ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಚಾಗತಮ್.

ಹುತಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರೋ ಭರತಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ৷৷2.92.2৷৷


ಹುತಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಃ who had completed his fire-sacrifice, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ ಋಷಿಃ sage Bharadwaja, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ tiger among men, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded palms, ಆಗತಮ್ arrived, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಅಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ spoke.

Seeing Bharata, the best among men, who stood with folded palms, sage Bharadwaja, who had just completed his fire-sacrifice, said to him:
ಕಚ್ಚಿದತ್ರ ಸುಖಾ ರಾತ್ರಿಸ್ತವಾಸ್ಮದ್ವಿಷಯೇ ಗತಾ.

ಸಮಗ್ರಸ್ತೇ ಜನಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾತಿಥ್ಯೇ ಶಂಸ ಮೇನಘ৷৷2.92.3৷৷


ಅತ್ರ here, ಅಸ್ಮದ್ವಿಷಯೇ at our place, ತವ to you, ರಾತ್ರಿಃ night, ಸುಖಮ್ happily, ಗತಾ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ hope you spent, ಹೇ ಅನಘ O sinless one, ಆತಿಥ್ಯೇ in the matter of hospitality, ತೇ ಜನಃ your people, ಸಮಗ್ರಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ all well, ಮೇ ಶಂಸ tell me.

O sinless one! hope, you spent the night at our hermitage well? Tell me whether all your people enjoyed the hospitality?
ತಮುವಾಚಾಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಭರತೋಭಿಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಚ.

ಆಶ್ರಮಾದಭಿನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮೃಷಿಮುತ್ತಮತೇಜಸಮ್৷৷2.92.4৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಆಶ್ರಮಾತ್ from the hermitage, ಅಭಿನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮ್ emerging, ಉತ್ತಮತೇಜಸಮ್ great power, ತಮ್ ಋಷಿಮ್ that sage, ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ with palms joined together, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಚ and saluting him, ಉವಾಚ said:

Bharata saluted with folded palms the sage of great powers. And emerging from the hermitage, replied:
ಸಸುಖೋಷಿತೋಸ್ಮಿ ಭಗವನ್ಸಮಗ್ರಬಲವಾಹನಃ.

ತರ್ಪಿತಸ್ಸರ್ವಕಾಮೈಶ್ಚ ಸಾಮಾತ್ಯೋ ಬಲವತ್ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.92.5৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O holy one, ಸಾಮಾತ್ಯಃ with my ministers, ಸಮಗ್ರಬಲವಾಹನಃ with the entire army and animals, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಬಲವತ್ exceedingly, ಸರ್ವಕಾಮೈಃ with all desires, ತರ್ಪಿತಃ gratified, ಸುಖೋಷಿತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ passed pleasantly.

O holy one, I with my ministers and the entire army of men and animals passed the night happily. All our desires have been gratified by you.
ಅಪೇತಕ್ಲಮಸನ್ತಾಪಾ ಸ್ಸುಭಿಕ್ಷಾಸ್ಸುಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರಯಾಃ.

ಅಪಿ ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಾನುಪಾದಾಯ ಸರ್ವೇ ಸ್ಮ ಸುಸುಖೋಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.92.6৷৷


ಪ್ರೇಷ್ಯಾನ್ ಅಪಿ even the messengers, ಉಪಾದಾಯ including, ಸರ್ವೇ all of us, ಅಪೇತಕ್ಲಮಸನ್ತಾಪಾಃ freed from fatigue and heat, ಸುಭಿಕ್ಷಾಃ well-nourished, ಸುಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರಯಾಃ well-housed, ಸುಸುಖೋಷಿತಾಃ ಸ್ಮಃ we passed (the night) happily

All of us including the messengers were released from fatigue and heat. We were well-fed and well-housed and the night was well-spent.
ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯೇಹಂ ಭಗವನ್ ಕಾಮಂ ತ್ವಾಮೃಷಿಸತ್ತಮಃ.

ಸಮೀಪಂ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಂ ಭ್ರಾತುರ್ಮೈತ್ರೇಣೇಕ್ಷಸ್ವ ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ৷৷2.92.7৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O venerable one, ಋಷಿಸತ್ತಮಃ O excellent of the ascetics, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಕಾಮಮ್ greatly, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯೇ I take leave of you, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ brother's, ಸಮೀಪಮ್ to, ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ set out, ಮೈತ್ರೇಣ friendly, ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ with eye, ಈಕ್ಷಸ್ವ you may consider.

O venerable one! O excellent of the ascetics! I seek your leave. As I am proceeding to see my brother, bless me with a kindly look.
ಆಶ್ರಮಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ ಕತಮೋ ಮಾರ್ಗಃ ಕಿಯಾನಿತಿ ಚ ಶಂಸ ಮೇ৷৷2.92.8৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ O knower of righteous ways, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಸ್ಯ of the righteous, ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of that magnanimous one, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ tell me, ಕತಮಃ which, ಮಾರ್ಗಃ is the path ಕಿಯಾನ್ how far, ಇತಿ ಚ that one also, ಮೇ to me, ಶಂಸ tell.

O knower of righteousness! Tell me which path leads to the hermitage of that righteous and magnanimous one (Rama)? And how far is it (from here)?
ಇತಿ ಪೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತು ಭರತಂ ಭ್ರಾತೃದರ್ಶನಲಾಲಸಮ್.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ৷৷2.92.9৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ brilliant, ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ a great sage, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ಇತಿ thus, ಪೃಷ್ಟಃ questioned, ಭ್ರಾತೃದರ್ಶನಲಾಲಸಮ್ yearning to see his brother, ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

Thus questioned, the great sage, brilliant Bharadwaja replied to Bharata who was yearning to see his brother:
ಭರತಾರ್ಧತೃತೀಯೇಷು ಯೋಜನೇಷ್ವಜನೇ ವನೇ.

ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೋ ಗಿರಿಸ್ತತ್ರ ರಮ್ಯನಿರ್ಝರಕಾನನಃ৷৷2.92.10৷৷


ಭರತ O Bharata, ಅರ್ಧತೃತೀಯೇಷು three and a half, ಯೋಜನೇಷು yojanas (one yojana is equivalent to eight miles), ತತ್ರ there, ಅಜನೇ lonely, ವನೇ forest, ರಮ್ಯನಿರ್ಝರಕಾನನಃ with charming streams and woodlands, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಃ Chitrakuta, ಗಿರಿಃ mountain (is there).

O Bharata, three and a half yojanas from here in the lonely forest stands mount Chitrakuta, with its charming streams and woodlands
ಉತ್ತರಂ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತಸ್ಯ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀ ನದೀ.

ಪುಷ್ಪಿತದ್ರುಮಸಞ್ಛನ್ನಾ ರಮ್ಯಪುಷ್ಪಿತಕಾನನಾ৷৷2.92.11৷৷


ತಸ್ಯ its, ಉತ್ತರಂ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವಮ್ northern side, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಪುಷ್ಪಿತದ್ರುಮಸಞ್ಚನ್ನಾ covered with flowering trees, ರಮ್ಯಪುಷ್ಪಿತಕಾನನಾ with lovely, blossoming woods, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀ ನದೀ there is river Mandakini.

On its northern side flows the river Mandakini which is densely covered with flowering trees and lovely blossoming woods (on its banks).
ಅನನ್ತರಂ ತತ್ಸರಿತಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಶ್ಚ ಪರ್ವತಃ.

ತಯೋಃ ಪರ್ಣಕುಟೀ ತಾತ ತತ್ರ ತೌ ವಸತೋ ಧ್ರುವಮ್৷৷2.92.12৷৷


ತತ್ಸರಿತಃ that river, ಅನನ್ತರಮ್ beyond, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಃ Chitrkuta, ಪರ್ವತಃ mountain, ತಯೋಃ their, ಪರ್ಣಕುಟೀ leafy hut, ತಾತ O dear child, ತೌ both of them, ತತ್ರ there, ವಸತಃ are living, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ this is certain.

O dear child, beyond that river lies mount Chitrakuta on which there is a hut made of leaves where, for sure, they both dwell.
ದಕ್ಷಿಣೇನೈವ ಮಾರ್ಗೇಣ ಸವ್ಯದಕ್ಷಿಣಮೇವ ವಾ.

ಗಜವಾಜಿರಥಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಂ ವಾಹಿನೀಂ ವಾಹಿನೀಪತೇ!৷৷2.92.13৷৷

ವಾಹಯಸ್ವ ಮಹಾಭಾಗ! ತತೋ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ ರಾಘವಮ್.


ವಾಹಿನೀಪತೇ! lord of the army, ಮಹಾಭಾಗ! O distinguished one, ಗಜವಾಜಿರಥಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಮ್ consisting of elephants, horses and chariots, ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್ army, ದಕ್ಷಿಣೇನೈವ to its south, ಮಾರ್ಗೇಣ through the path, ಸವ್ಯದಕ್ಷಿಣಮೇವ ವಾ or towards south-west, ವಾಹಯಸ್ವ lead, ತತಃ thereafter, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ದ್ರಕ್ಷಯಸಿ you will see.

O distinguished lord of the army, if you lead your army full of elephants, horses and chariots through the southern path or towards the south-west, you will come across Rama there.
ಪ್ರಯಾಣಮಿತಿ ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಜರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಯೋಷಿತಃ.

ಹಿತ್ವಾ ಯಾನಾನಿ ಯಾನಾರ್ಹಾಃ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಂ ಪರ್ಯವಾರಯನ್৷৷2.92.14৷৷


ಇತಿ thus, ಪ್ರಯಾಣಮ್ about journey, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಯಾನಾರ್ಹಾಃ chariots worthy of them,
ರಾಜರಾಜಸ್ಯ king of kings, Dasaratha's, ಯೋಷಿತಃ wives, ಯಾನಾನಿ carriages, ಹಿತ್ವಾ leaving, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಮ್ that brahmin, ಪರ್ಯವಾರಯನ್ stood around.

When they heard about the journey, the wives of Dasaratha descended from their chariots worthy of them and stood around the brahmin, Bharadwaja.
ವೇಪಮಾನಾ ಕೃಶಾ ದೀನಾ ಸಹ ದೇವ್ಯಾ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಯಾ.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ತತ್ರ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಕರಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಚರಣೌ ಮುನೇಃ৷৷2.92.15৷৷


ತತ್ರ among them, ಕೃಶಾ emaciated, ದೀನಾ desolate, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ವೇಪಮಾನಾ trembling, ಮುನೇಃ sage's, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಯಾ ದೇವ್ಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sumitra, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ grasped.

Among them was Kausalya, trembling, emaciated and desolate, along with Sumitra. They grasped the feet of sage Bharadwaja with their hands.
ಅಸಮೃದ್ಧೇನ ಕಾಮೇನ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಗರ್ಹಿತಾ.

ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ತಸ್ಯ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಚರಣೌ ಸವ್ಯಪತ್ರಪಾ৷৷2.92.16৷৷


ಅಸಮೃದ್ಧೇನ with unfulfilled, ಕಾಮೇನ with desire, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ for all the worlds, ಗರ್ಹಿತಾ despised, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಸವ್ಯಪತ್ರಪಾ overcome with shame, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ grasped.

Kaikeyi with her unfulfilled desire and despised in all the worlds overcome with shame, also grasped his feet.
ತಂ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ಭಗವನ್ತಂ ಮಹಾಮುನಿಮ್.

ಅದೂರಾರ್ಭರತಸ್ಯೈವ ತಸ್ಥೌ ದೀನಮನಾಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.92.17৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಭಗವನ್ತಮ್ divine, ತಂ ಮಹಾಮುನಿಮ್ that great ascetic, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಆಗಮ್ಯ reverently circumambulated, ದೀನಮನಾಃ with a sad heart, ಭರತಸ್ಯ from Bharata, ಅದೂರಾದೇವ not far away, ತಸ್ಥೌ stood.

She reverently circumambulated that great and divine ascetic and stood not far away
from Bharata with a sad heart.
ತತಃ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಭರತಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ.

ವಿಶೇಷಂ ಜ್ಞಾತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಮಾತ್ರೂಣಾಂ ತವ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.92.18৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ firm in vows, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ enquired, ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ತವ your, ಮಾತ್ರೂಣಾಮ್ mothers, ವಿಶೇಷಮ್ individually, ಜ್ಞಾತುಮ್ to know, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ want desiring.

Then Bharadwaja, firm in his vows, said to Bharata, I want to know about your mothers individually.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ಭರತೋ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೇನ ಧೀಮತಾ.

ಉವಾಚ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ಭೂತ್ವಾ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಚನಕೋವಿದಃ৷৷2.92.19৷৷


ಧೀಮತಾ by the sagacious, ಭರದ್ವಾಜೇನ by Bharadwaja, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ asked, ವಚನಕೋವಿದಃ
proficient in speech, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿ: ಭೂತ್ವಾ with palms joined together in reverence, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Thus asked by the sagacious Bharadwaja, Bharata, proficient in speech, replied with palms folded in reverence:
ಯಾಮಿಮಾಂ ಭಗವನ್ ದೀನಾಂ ಶೋಕಾನಶನಕರ್ಶಿತಾಮ್.

ಪಿತುರ್ಹಿ ಮಹಿಷೀಂ ದೇವೀಂ ದೇವತಾಮಿವ ಪಶ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.92.20৷৷

ಏಷಾ ತಂ ಪುರಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ಸಿಂಹವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಗಾಮಿನಮ್.

ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಸುಷುವೇ ರಾಮಂ ಧಾತಾರಮದಿತಿರ್ಯಥಾ৷৷2.92.21৷৷


ಭಗವನ್ O venerable one, ದೀನಾಮ್ desolate, ಶೋಕಾನಶನಕರ್ಶಿತಾಮ್ emaciated due to grief and fasting, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಮಹಿಷೀಮ್ principal queen, ದೇವತಾಮಿವ resembling a goddess, ಯಾಮ್ ಇಮಾಮ್ ದೇವೀಮ್ that this queen, ಪಶ್ಯಸಿ you are seeing, ಏಷಾ she, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ is Kausalya, ಅದಿತಿಃ Aditi,
ಧಾತಾರಂ ಯಥಾ like Dhata, ಸಿಂಹವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಗಾಮಿನಮ್ walking with the powerful stride of a lion, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ tiger among men, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ಸುಷುವೇ gave birth.

O venerable sage, this queen you are looking at, forlorn and emaciated due to grief and fasting, and who resembles a goddess is Kausalya, the principal queen of my father. As Aditi bore Dhata, she bore Rama, the best among men who walks with the powerful stride of a lion.
ಅಸ್ಯಾ ವಾಮಭುಜಂ ಶ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಾ ಯೈಷಾ ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ.

ಕರ್ಣಿಕಾರಸ್ಯ ಶಾಖೇವ ಶೀರ್ಣಪುಷ್ಪಾ ವನಾನ್ತರೇ৷৷2.92.22৷৷

ಏತಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತು ಸುತೌ ದೇವ್ಯಾಃ ಕುಮಾರೌ ದೇವವರ್ಣಿನೌ.

ಉಭೌ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೌ ವೀರೌ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮೌ৷৷2.92.23৷৷


ಯಾ ಏಷಾ this woman, ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ plunged in grief, ವನಾನ್ತರೇ in the midst of the forest, ಶೀರ್ಣಪುಷ್ಪಾ with blossoms withered, ಕರ್ಣಿಕಾರಸ್ಯ of the karnikara tree, ಶಾಖೇವ like a branch, ಅಸ್ಯಾಃ this Kausalya's, ವಾಮಭುಜಮ್ left arm, ಶ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಾ leaning, ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ standing, ಕುಮಾರೌ two princes, ದೇವವರ್ಣಿನೌ
equal to gods in beauty, ವೀರೌ heroes, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮೌ possessing no vain prowess, ಲಕ್ಷಣಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೌ Lakshmana and Satrughna, ಉಭೌ both, ಏತಸ್ಯಾ ದೇವ್ಯಾ: this queen's, ಸುತೌ sons.

This lady plunged in grief, resembling the branch of a karnikara tree in the midst of the forest with blossoms withered and leaning on the left arm of Kausalya, is queen Sumitra, mother of two heroes, comparable to gods in beauty and possessing true prowess -- Lakshmana and Satrughna.
ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕೃತೇ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ ಜೀವನಾಶಮಿತೋ ಗತೌ.

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರವಿಹೀನಶ್ಚ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಂ ದಶರಥೋ ಗತಃ৷৷2.92.24৷৷

ಕ್ರೋಧನಾಮಕೃತಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಂ ದೃಪ್ತಾಂ ಸುಭಗಮಾನಿನೀಮ್.

ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಕಾಮಾಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮನಾರ್ಯಾಮಾರ್ಯಾರೂಪಿಣೀಮ್৷৷2.92.25৷৷

ಮಮೈತಾಂ ಮಾತರಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ನೃಶಂಸಾಂ ಪಾಪನಿಶ್ಚಯಾಮ್.

ಯತೋಮೂಲಂ ಹಿ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ವ್ಯಸನಂ ಮಹದಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.92.26৷৷


ಯಸ್ಯಾಃ ಕೃತೇ on whose account, ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ best of men (Rama and Lakshmana), ಇತಃ from here, ಜೀವನಾಶಮ್ destruction of life, ಗತೌ obtained, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಃ king Dasaratha, ಪುತ್ರವಿಹೀನಶ್ಚ deprived of his son, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heaven, ಗತಃ attained, ಆತ್ಮನ: mine, ಮಹತ್ great, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ calamity, ಯತೋಮೂಲಮ್ the root cause of, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see, ಕ್ರೋಧಾನಾಮ್ irascible, ಅಕೃತಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಮ್ is not discerning, ದೃಪ್ತಾಮ್ proud, ಸುಭಗಮಾನಿನೀಮ್ considers herself beautiful, ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಕಾಮಾಮ್ ambitious of wealth, ಅನಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ ignoble, ಆರ್ಯರೂಪಿಣೀಮ್ in the guise of a noble woman, ಏತಾಮ್ she, ನೃಶಂಸಾಮ್ wicked, ಪಾಪನಿಶ್ಚಯಾಮ್ intent on sinful acts, ಮಮ my, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ವಿದ್ಧಿ you may know.

She is my mother Kaikeyi who is irascible, lacks the power of discrimination, proud, boastful of her beauty, ambitious of wealth, ignoble in the guise of a noble woman, wicked and intent on sinful acts. Behold her. You may know that because of her, Rama and Lakshmana the best of men entered the forest which may cause their destruction and king Dasaratha attained heaven. She alone is the root of this great calamity that I am presently confronting.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲೋ ಬಾಷ್ಪಗದ್ಗದಯಾ ಗಿರಾ.

ಸ ನಿಶ್ಸ್ವಾಸ ತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ನಾಗಃ ಕೃದ್ಧ ಇವ ಶ್ವಸನ್৷৷2.92.27৷৷


ತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ with reddened eyes, ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲಃ tiger among men, ಸಃ that Bharata, ಬಾಷ್ಪಗದ್ಗದಯಾ in a voice choked with tears, ಗಿರಾ with words, ಇತಿ thus,ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಕೃದ್ಧಃ angry, ಶ್ವಸನ್ sighing, ನಾಗಃ ಇವ like a king cobra, ನಿಶ್ಸ್ವಾಸ heaved sighs.

Thus spoke Bharata, the best of men, with his eyes reddened and voice choked with sobs and hissing like a king cobra.
ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಸ್ತಂ ಬ್ರುವನ್ತಂ ಭರತಂ ತಥಾ.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಮಹಾಬುದ್ಧಿರಿದಂ ವಚನಮರ್ಥವತ್৷৷2.92.28৷৷


ಮಹಾಬುದ್ಧಿ: wise, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಃ great sage Maharshi, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ತಥಾ thus, ಬ್ರುವನ್ತಮ್ speaking, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to that Bharata, ಅರ್ಥವತ್ significant, ಇದಂ ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ
replied.

Hearing the words of Bharata, the great sage, wise Bharadwaja replied with meaningful words:
ನ ದೋಷೇಣಾವಗನ್ತವ್ಯಾ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ಭರತ ತ್ವಯಾ.

ರಾಮಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜನಂ ಹ್ಯೇತತ್ಸುಖೋದರ್ಕಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.92.29৷৷


ಭರತ O Bharata, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ದೋಷೇಣ with any fault, ನ ಅವಗನ್ತವ್ಯಾ should not be imputed, ಏತತ್ this, ರಾಮಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜನಮ್ banishment of Rama, ಸುಖೋದರ್ಕಮ್ of great felicity, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಹಿ will become.

O Bharata, you should not find fault with Kaikeyi. Rama's banishment will prove a great source of happiness in future (for mankind).
ದೇವಾನಾಂ ದಾನವಾನಾಂ ಚ ಋಷೀಣಾಂ ಭಾವಿತಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್.

ಹಿತಮೇವ ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ್ಧಿ ರಾಮಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜನಾದಿಹ৷৷2.92.30৷৷


ಇಹ now, ರಾಮಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜನಾತ್ by banishing Rama, ದೇವಾನಾಮ್ of gods, ದಾನವಾನಾಂ ಚ of demous, ಭಾವಿತಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ of purified souls, ಋಷೀಣಾಂ rishis', ಹಿತಮೇವ also welfare, ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ್ಧಿ shall become.

Banishment of Rama will bring about the welfare of the gods, the demons, and the sages of purified souls.
ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ತು ಸಂಸಿದ್ಧಃ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಚೈನಂ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್.

ಆಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ ಭರತ ಸ್ಸೈನ್ಯಂ ಯುಜ್ಯತಾಮಿತ್ಯಚೋದಯತ್৷৷2.92.31৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಏನಮ್ him, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having paid obeisance, ಸಂಸಿದ್ಧಃ getting ready for the journey, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಚ ಕೃತ್ವಾ having circumambulated, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ having taken leave of him, ಯುಜ್ಯತಾಮ್ ಇತಿ Be harnessed, ಸೈನ್ಯಮ್ the army, ಅಚೋದಯತ್ urged.

Having paid obeisance, the accomplished Bharata circumambulated sage Bharadwaja,
look leave of him, and ordered his army to get ready.
ತತೋ ವಾಜಿರಥಾನ್ಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ ದಿವ್ಯಾನ್ಹೇಮಪರಿಷ್ಕೃತಾನ್.

ಅಧ್ಯಾರೋಹತ್ಪ್ರಯಾಣಾರ್ಥೀ ಬಹೂನ್ಬಹುವಿಧೋ ಜನಃ৷৷2.92.32৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಬಹುವಿಧಃ different types, ಜನಃ people, ಪ್ರಯಾಣಾರ್ಥೀ wishing to proceed, ದಿವ್ಯಾನ್ excellent, ಹೇಮಪರಿಷ್ಕೃತಾನ್ decorated with gold, ಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ harnessed, ವಾಜಿರಥಾನ್ horse-chariots, ಅಧ್ಯಾರೋಹತ್ mounted.

Different groups of people intending to depart harnessed excellent horse-chariots decorated with gold.
ಗಜಕನ್ಯಾ ಗಜಾಶ್ಚೈವ ಹೇಮಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಃ ಪತಾಕಿನಃ.

ಜೀಮೂತಾ ಇವ ಘರ್ಮಾನ್ತೇ ಸಘೋಷಾಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥಿರೇ৷৷2.92.33৷৷


ಹೇಮಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಃ with golden girths, ಪತಾಕಿನಃ with pennants, ಗಜಕನ್ಯಾಃ female elephants, ಗಜಾಶ್ಚೈವ
also male elephants, ಘರ್ಮಾನ್ತೇ at the close of summer, ಜೀಮೂತಾಃ ಇವ like thunder-clouds, ಸಘೋಷಾಃ with sounds, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥಿರೇ set forth.

The male and female elephants wearing golden girths and decorated with pennants, set forth with their bells sounding like thunder-clouds at the end of summer.
ವಿವಿಧಾನ್ಯಪಿ ಯಾನಾನಿ ಮಹನ್ತಿ ಚ ಲಘೂನಿ ಚ.

ಪ್ರಯಯು ಸ್ಸುಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಣಿ ಪಾದೈ ರೇವ ಪದಾತಯಃ৷৷2.92.34৷৷


ಮಹನ್ತಿ ಚ large ones, ಲಘೂನಿ ಚ small ones, ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ of various kinds, ಸುಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಣಿ costly, ಯಾನಾನಿ had carriages, ಪ್ರಯಯುಃ set forth, ಪದಾತಯಃ foot-soldiers, ಪಾದೈರೇವ set out on foot it self.

Various types of costly carriages, large and small, set forth, while the infantry marched on.
ಅಥ ಯಾನಪ್ರವೇಕೈಸ್ತು ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಪ್ರಮುಖಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ.

ರಾಮದರ್ಶನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣ್ಯಃ ಪ್ರಯಯುರ್ಮುದಿತಾಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.92.35৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಪ್ರಮುಖಾಃ headed by Kausalya, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ರಾಮದರ್ಶನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣ್ಯಃ eager to see Rama, ಮುದಿತಾಃ delightfully, ತದಾ then, ಯಾನಪ್ರವೇಕೈಃ in distinguished carriages, ಪ್ರಯಯುಃ went.

The women headed by Kausalya, eager to see Rama, proceeded delightfully in distinguished carriages.
ಚನ್ದ್ರಾರ್ಕತರುಣಾಭಾಸಾಂ ನಿರ್ಯುಕ್ತಾಂ ಶಿಬಿಕಾಂ ಶುಭಾಮ್.

ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ಭರತ ಸ್ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಃ৷৷2.92.36৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ majestic, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಚನ್ದ್ರಾರ್ಕತರುಣಾಭಾಸಾಮ್ with the splendour of the Sun and the Moon, ನಿರ್ಯುಕ್ತಾಮ್ kept ready, ಶುಭಾಮ್ auspicious, ಶಿಬಿಕಾಮ್ palanquin, ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ having got in, ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಃ with retinue, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ proceeded.

Magnanimous Bharata got into an auspicious palanquin of the splendour of the Sun and the Moon kept ready and proceeded amidst escorts.
ಸಾ ಪ್ರಯಾತಾ ಮಹಾಸೇನಾ ಗಜವಾಜಿರಥಾಕುಲಾ.

ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ ದಿಶಮಾವೃತ್ಯ ಮಹಾಮೇಘ ಇವೋತ್ಥಿತಃ৷৷2.92.37৷৷

ವನಾನಿ ತು ವ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಜುಷ್ಟಾನಿ ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ.

ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಾಃ ಪರವೇಲಾಯಾಂ ಗಿರಿಷ್ವಪಿ ನದೀಷು ಚ৷৷2.92.38৷৷


ಗಜವಾಜಿರಥಾಕುಲಾ teeming with elephants, horses and chariots, ಸಾ ಮಹಾಸೇನಾ that vast army, ಉತ್ಥಿತಃ that has arisen, ಮಹಾಮೇಘ ಇವ like a lofty cloud, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್ southward, ಆವೃತ್ಯ having spread, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ with birds and beasts, ಜುಷ್ಟಾನಿ visited, ವನಾನಿ forests, ವ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ traversing, ಗಙ್ಗಾಯಾ: river Ganga's, ಪರವೇಲಾಯಾಮ್ on the other side, ಗಿರಿಷ್ವಪಿ through mountains also, ನದೀಷು ಚ and streams, ಪ್ರಯಾತಾ proceeded.

That vast army teeming with elephants, horses and chariots proceeded southward spreading like a lofty cloud that had risen in the sky, traversing through the forests full of birds and beasts, passing through the mountains and streams on the other side of the river Ganga.
ಸಾ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟದ್ವಿಪವಾಜಿಯೋಧಾ ವಿತ್ರಾಸಯನ್ತೀ ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಸಙ್ಘಾನ್.

ಮಹದ್ವನಂ ತತ್ಪ್ರತಿಗಾಹಮಾನಾ ರರಾಜ ಸೇನಾ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ತತ್ರ৷৷2.92.39৷৷


ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟದ್ವಿಪವಾಜಿಯೋಧಾ with soldiers, elephants and horses in high spirits, ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಸಙ್ಘಾನ್ flocks of birds and beasts, ವಿತ್ರಾಸಯನ್ತೀ frightening, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ಸಾ ಸೇನಾ that army, ತತ್ರ there, ತತ್ that, ಮಹತ್ great, ವನಮ್ forest, ಪ್ರತಿಗಾಹಮಾನಾ while entering, ರರಾಜ looked splendid.

Bharata's army of soldiers, elephants and horses, all in high spirits, looked splendid while entering the forest full of frightening flocks of birds and beasts.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ದ್ವಿನವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the ninetysecond sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
