[Rama describes to Sita the beauty of mountains, rivers, birds and animals at Chitrakuta.]

ಅಥ ಶೈಲಾದ್ವಿನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಮೈಥಿಲೀಂ ಕೋಸಲೇಶ್ವರಃ.

ಅದರ್ಶಯಚ್ಛುಭಜಲಾಂ ರಮ್ಯಾಂ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.95.1৷৷


ಅಥ then, ಕೋಸಲೇಶ್ವರಃ lord of Kosala (Rama), ಶೈಲಾತ್ from the mountain, ವಿನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಮ್ಯ having descended, ಶುಭಜಲಾಮ್ of sacred water, ರಮ್ಯಾಮ್ charming, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Mandakini, ಮೈಥಿಲೀಮ್ to Sita, ಅದರ್ಶಯತ್ showed.

Then Rama, the lord of Kosala, descended from the mountain and showed Sita the charming river Mandakini of sacred waters.
ಅಬ್ರವೀಚ್ಚ ವರಾರೋಹಾಂ ಚಾರುಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಾಮ್.

ವಿದೇಹರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಸುತಾಂ ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜೀವಲೋಚನಃ৷৷2.95.2৷৷


ರಾಜೀವಲೋಚನಃ lotus-eyed, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವರಾರೋಹಾಮ್ to the heavy-hipped, ಚಾರುಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಾಮ್ to her whose face resembled the beauitiful Moon, ವಿದೇಹರಾಜಸ್ಯ of the king of Videha, ಸುತಾಮ್ daugher, ಅಬ್ರವೀಚ್ಚ said.

Lotus-eyed Rama said to the heavy-hipped daughter of the king of Videha, whose face resembled the beauitiful Moon.
ವಿಚಿತ್ರಪುಲಿನಾಂ ರಮ್ಯಾಂ ಹಂಸಸಾರಸಸೇವಿತಾಮ್.

ಕಮಲೈರುಪಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾಂ ಪಶ್ಯ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.95.3৷৷


ವಿಚಿತ್ರಪುಲಿನಾಮ್ of variagated sandbanks, ರಮ್ಯಾಮ್ enchanting, ಹಂಸಸಾರಸಸೇವಿತಾಮ್ frequented by geese and swans, ಕಮಲೈಃ with lotus, ಉಪಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾಮ್ adorned with, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Mandakini, ಪಶ್ಯ look.

Look at this enchanting river Mandakini with its variegated sandbanks frequented by geese and swans and adorned with lotuses.
ನಾನಾವಿಧೈಸ್ತೀರರುಹೈ ರ್ವೃತಾಂ ಪುಷ್ಪಫಲದ್ರುಮೈಃ.

ರಾಜನ್ತೀಂ ರಾಜರಾಜಸ್ಯ ನಲಿನೀಮಿವ ಸರ್ವತಃ৷৷2.95.4৷৷


ಸರ್ವತಃ everywhere, ನಾನಾವಿಧೈಃ of various kinds, ತೀರರುಹೈಃ growing on its banks, ಪುಷ್ಪಫಲದ್ರುಮೈಃ trees, laden with fruits and flowers, ವೃತಾಮ್ surrounded by, ರಾಜರಾಜಸ್ಯ Kubera's, ನಲಿನೀಮ್ ಇವ like fragrant lake Nalini, ರಾಜನ್ತೀಮ್ sparkling.

See this river sparkling with trees of every kind laden with fruits and flowers growing on its banks. Everywhere it resembles the lake Nalini of Kubera.
ಮೃಗಯೂಥನಿಪೀತಾನಿ ಕಲುಷಾಮ್ಭಾಂಸಿ ಸಾಮ್ಪ್ರತಮ್.

ತೀರ್ಥಾನಿ ರಮಣೀಯಾನಿ ರತಿಂ ಸಞ್ಜನಯನ್ತಿ ಮೇ৷৷2.95.5৷৷


ಸಾಮ್ಪ್ರತಮ್ just now, ಮೃಗಯೂಥನಿಪೀತಾನಿ drunk by herds of deer, ಕಲುಷಾಮ್ಭಾಂಸಿ of turbid waters, ರಮಣೀಯಾನಿ lovely, ತೀರ್ಥಾನಿ landing places, ಮೇ to me, ರತಿಮ್ pleasure, ಸಞ್ಜನಯನ್ತಿ is producing.

The herds of deer have just drunk water by descending down the landing places and the waters are still turbid. This sight produces great pleasure in me.
ಜಟಾಜಿನಧರಾಃ ಕಾಲೇ ವಲ್ಕಲೋತ್ತರವಾಸಸಃ.

ಋಷಯ ಸ್ತ್ವವಗಾಹನ್ತೇ ನದೀಂ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ಪ್ರಿಯೇ৷৷2.95.6৷৷


ಪ್ರಿಯೇ O my beloved, ಜಟಾಜಿನಧರಾಃ with matted locks and wearing deer skins, ವಲ್ಕಲೋತ್ತರವಾಸಸಃ bark as upper cloth, ಋಷಯಃ rishis, ಕಾಲೇ at the appointed hour, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ the river Mandakini, ಅವಗಾಹನ್ತೇ are immersing.

O my beloved! rishis with matted locks and wearing deer skins and bark of trees as upper cloth bathe in the river Mandakini for performing morning ablutions in time.
ಆದಿತ್ಯಮುಪತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತೇ ನಿಯಮಾದೂರ್ಧ್ವಬಾಹವಃ.

ಏತೇ ಪರೇ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಿ! ಮುನಯ ಸ್ಸಂಶಿತವ್ರತಾಃ৷৷2.95.7৷৷


ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಿ! O large-eyed Sita, ಸಂಶಿತವ್ರತಾಃ of rigid austerities, ಏತೇ ಪರೇ some other, ಮುನಯಃ ascetics, ನಿಯಮಾತ್ according to tradition, ಊರ್ಧ್ವಬಾಹವಃ lifting up their arms, ಆದಿತ್ಯಮ್ Sun-god, ಉಪತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತೇ are worhipping.

O large-eyed Sita, some other ascetics of rigid austerities worship the sun-god according to tradition, lifting up their arms and invoking the Sun.
ಮಾರುತೋದ್ಧೂತಶಿಖರೈಃ ಪ್ರನೃತ್ತ ಇವ ಪರ್ವತಃ.

ಪಾದಪೈಃ ಪತ್ರಪುಷ್ಪಾಣಿ ಸೃಜದ್ಭಿರಭಿತೋ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.95.8৷৷


ಮಾರುತೋದ್ಧೂತಶಿಖರೈಃ tree tops swayed by the wind, ನದೀಮಭಿತಃ around the river, ಪತ್ರಪುಷ್ಪಾಣಿ leaves and flowers, ಸೃಜದ್ಭಿಃ shedding, ಪಾದಪೈಃ with trees, ಪರ್ವತಃ mountain, ಪ್ರನೃತ್ತ ಇವ seems dancing.

With the trees whose tops are swayed by the wind, the mountain was as if dancing, shedding leaves and flowers all around the river.
ಚಿನ್ಮಣಿನಿಕಾಶೋದಾಂ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ಪುಲಿನಶಾಲಿನೀಮ್.

ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ಸಿದ್ಧಜನಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಂ ಪಶ್ಯ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.95.9৷৷


ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಮಣಿನಿಕಾಶೋದಾಮ್ with water transparent as crystals, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some other places, ಪುಲಿನಶಾಲಿನೀಮ್ sparkling with sand dunes, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ at some places, ಸಿದ್ಧಜನಾಕೀರ್ಣಾಮ್ filled with siddhas (those acomplished in spiritual pursuits), ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Mandakini, ಪಶ್ಯ see.

Behold this river Mandakini whose waters here are transparent like crystals, there sparkling with sand dunes and elsewhere crowded with siddhas.
ನಿರ್ಧೂತಾನ್ವಾಯುನಾ ಪಶ್ಯ ವಿತತಾನ್ಪುಷ್ಪಸಞ್ಚಯಾನ್.

ಪೋಪ್ಲೂಯಮಾನಾನಪರಾನ್ಪಶ್ಯ ತ್ವಂ ಜಲಮಧ್ಯಗಾನ್৷৷2.95.10৷৷


ವಾಯುನಾ by the wind, ನಿರ್ಧೂತಾನ್ shaken off, ವಿತತಾನ್ scattered, ಪುಷ್ಪಸಞ್ಚಯಾನ್ heaps of flowers, ಪಶ್ಯ see, ಜಲಮಧ್ಯಗಾನ್ in the midst of waters, ಪೋಪ್ಲೂಯಮಾನಾನ್ floating, ಅಪರಾನ್ other masses of flowers, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪಶ್ಯ see.

Look at the scattered heaps of flowers shaken off by the wind and large quantities of flowers floating on the waters.
ತಾಂಶ್ಚಾತಿವಲ್ಗುವಚಸೋ ರಥಾಙ್ಗಾಹ್ವಯನಾ ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ.

ಅಧಿರೋಹನ್ತಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿ ನಿಷ್ಕೂಜನ್ತ ಶ್ಶುಭಾ ಗಿರಃ৷৷2.95.11৷৷


ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿ O my auspicious Sita, ವಲ್ಗುವಚಸಃ of sweet-voiced, ರಥಾಙ್ಗಾಹ್ವಯನಾಃ birds named Chakravaka, ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ birds, ಶುಭಾಃ most pleasant, ಗಿರಃ tones, ನಿಷ್ಕೂಜನ್ತಃ uttering, ತಾನ್ on those (heaps of flowers), ಅಧಿರೋಹನ್ತಿ alighting.

O my auspicious Sita, sweet-voiced Chakravaka birds singing in most pleasant tones are alighting on those heaps of flowers.
ದರ್ಶನಂ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ಶೋಭನೇ.

ಅಧಿಕಂ ಪುರವಾಸಾಚ್ಚ ಮನ್ಯೇ ತವ ಚ ದರ್ಶನಾತ್৷৷2.95.12৷৷


ಶೋಭನೇ my lovely Sita, ತವ your, ದರ್ಶನಾತ್ in presence, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ Chitrakuta's, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ Mandakini's, ದರ್ಶನಮ್ viewing, ಪುರವಾಸಾಚ್ಛ compared to living in Ayodhya, ಅಧಿಕಮ್ is greater, ಮನ್ಯೇ I consider.

My lovely Sita, I consider watching this mount Chitrakuta and river Mandakini in your presence more delightful than living in Ayodhya.
ವಿಧೂತಕಲುಷೈ ಸ್ಸಿದ್ಧೈಸ್ತಪೋದಮಶಮಾನ್ವಿತೈಃ.

ನಿತ್ಯವಿಕ್ಷೋಭಿತಜಲಾಂ ವಿಗಾಹಸ್ವ ಮಯಾ ಸಹ৷৷2.95.13৷৷


ವಿಧೂತಕಲುಷೈಃ cleansed of sins, ತಪೋದಮಶಮಾನ್ವಿತೈಃ endowed with asceticism, self-restraint and tranquillity, ಸಿದ್ಧೈಃ with siddhas, ನಿತ್ಯವಿಕ್ಷೋಭಿತಜಲಾಮ್ with perpetually agitated waters, ಮಯಾ ಸಹ with me, ವಿಗಾಹಸ್ವ enter.

The waters of river Mandakini is perpetually agitated by siddhas who are endowed with asceticism, self-restraint and tranquillity and who are cleansed of sins by taking bath in the river. Plunge with me into this river.
ಸಖೀವಚ್ಚ ವಿಗಾಹಸ್ವ ಸೀತೇ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಕಮಲಾನ್ಯವಮಜ್ಜನ್ತೀ ಪುಷ್ಕರಾಣಿ ಚ ಭಾಮಿನಿ৷৷2.95.14৷৷


ಭಾಮಿನಿ O lovely, ಸೀತೇ Sita, ಕಮಲಾನಿ red lotuses, ಪುಷ್ಕರಾಣಿ ಚ white lotuses, ಅವಮಜ್ಜನ್ತೀ submerging, ಸಖೀವತ್ like a friend, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಮ್ Mandakini river, ವಿಗಾಹಸ್ವ you may enter.

O lovely Sita, like a companion plunge into this river Mandakini, submerging the red and white lotuses, and enjoy sporting.
ತ್ವಂ ಪೌರಜನವದ್ವ್ಯಾಲಾನಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮಿವ ಪರ್ವತಮ್.

ಮನ್ಯಸ್ವ ವನಿತೇ! ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಸರಯೂವದಿಮಾಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.95.15৷৷


ವನಿತೇ! O my lovely lady, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ವ್ಯಾಲಾನ್ wild animals, ಪೌರಜನವತ್ as inhabitants of Ayodhya, ಪರ್ವತಮ್ mountain, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮಿವ as Ayodhya, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ನದೀಮ್ river, ಸರಯೂವತ್ as Sarayu, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಮನ್ಯಸ್ವ think of.

O my lovely lady! Always think this river Mandakini as Sarayu and this mount Chitrakuta as Ayodhya and these wild animals as its inhabitants.
ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಮನ್ನಿದೇಶೇ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ತ್ವಂ ಚಾನುಕೂಲಾ ವೈದೇಹಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ಜನಯಥೋ ಮಮ৷৷2.95.16৷৷


ವೈದೇಹಿ O Sita, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಶ್ಚಾಪಿ Lakshmana also, ಮನ್ನಿದೇಶೇ at my command, ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಃ obedient, ತ್ವಂ ಚ you also, ಅನುಕೂಲಾ agreeable, ಮಮ to me, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ pleasure, ಜನಯಥಃ are causing.

With righteous Lakshmana obedient and you, O Sita, agreeable to me, you both bring me great pleasure.
ಉಪಸ್ಪೃಶಂಸ್ತ್ರಿಷವಣಂ ಮಧುಮೂಲಫಲಾಶನಃ.

ನಾಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯೈನ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ಸ್ಪೃಹಯೇದ್ಯ ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ৷৷2.95.17৷৷


ತ್ರಿಷವಣಮ್ thrice at the time of prayers, ಉಪಸ್ಪೃಶನ್ bathing, ಮಧುಮೂಲಫಲಾಶನಃ honey, roots and fruits, ತ್ವಯಾ ಸಹ in your company, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯೈ for Ayodhya, ನ ಸ್ಪೃಹಯೇ I do not yearn for, ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ನ nor even the kingdom.

Bathing thrice in your company at the time of prayers and partaking honey, roots and fruits, I do not yearn either for Ayodhya or for the kingdom.
ಇಮಾಂಹಿ ರಮ್ಯಾಂ ಮೃಗಯೂಥಶಾಲಿನೀಂ ನಿಪೀತತೋಯಾಂ ಗಜಸಿಂಹವಾನರೈಃ.

ಸುಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾಂ ಪುಷ್ಪಭರೈರಲಙ್ಕೃತಾಂ ನಸೋಸ್ತಿ ಯ ಸ್ಸ್ಯಾನ್ನ ಗತಕ್ಲಮ ಸ್ಸುಖೀ৷৷2.95.18৷৷


ರಮ್ಯಾಮ್ enchanting, ಮೃಗಯೂಥಶಾಲಿನೀಮ್ teeming with herds of deer, ಗಜಸಿಂಹವಾನರೈಃ with elephants, lions and monkeys, ನಿಪೀತತೋಯಾಮ್ its waters being drunk by, ಸುಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾಮ್ in full bloom, ಪುಷ್ಪಭರೈಃ with multitude of flowers, ಅಲಙ್ಕೃತಾಮ್ decorated, ಇಮಾಮ್ this (river Mandakini), ಯಃ who, ಗತಕ್ಲಮಃ with fatigue gone, ಸುಖೀ happy, ನ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ will not find himself, ಸಃ that one, ನಾಸ್ತಿ does not exist.

With this enchanting Mandakini teeming with herds of deer, whose waters are drunk by elephants, lions and monkeys, decorated with heaps of flowers fallen from the trees in full bloom, who will not feel happy and free from fatigue.
ಇತೀವ ರಾಮೋ ಬಹುಸಙ್ಗತಂ ವಚಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾಸಹಾಯ ಸ್ಸರಿತಂ ಪ್ರತಿ ಬ್ರುವನ್.

ಚಚಾರ ರಮ್ಯಂ ನಯನಾಞ್ಜನಪ್ರಭಂ ಸ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಂ ರಘುವಂಶವರ್ಧನಃ৷৷2.95.19৷৷


ರಘುವಂಶವರ್ಧನಃ perpetuator of Raghu dynasty, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಇತೀವ in this manner, ಸರಿತಂ ಪ್ರತಿ about Mandakini river, ಬಹು at length, ಸಙ್ಗತಮ್ appropriate, ವಚಃ words, ಬ್ರುವನ್ speaking, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಸಹಾಯಃ in the company of his beloved, ನಯನಾಞ್ಜನಪ್ರಭಮ್ resembling collyrium in hue, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ delightful, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಮ್ Chitrakuta, ಚಚಾರ wandered about.

Rama, the perpetuator of the Raghu dynasty, describing the river Mandakini at length appropriately in this manner, wandered in the company of his beloved consort on mount Chitrakuta looking black like collyrium.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಪಞ್ಚನವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the ninetyfifth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
