Sloka & Translation

[Rama hears the sounds of the army approaching the hermitage --- alerts Lakshmana to make sure --- recognition of the army as that of Bharata's --- Lakshmana mistakes Bharata's intentions.]

ತಾಂ ತಥಾ ದರ್ಶಯಿತ್ವಾ ತು ಮೈಥಿಲೀಂ ಗಿರಿನಿಮ್ನಗಾಮ್.

ನಿಷಸಾದ ಗಿರಿಪ್ರಸ್ಥೇ ಸೀತಾಂ ಮಾಂಸೇನ ಛನ್ದಯನ್৷৷2.96.1৷৷


ಮೈಥಿಲೀಮ್ princess of Mithila, ತಾಂ ಸೀತಾಮ್ to Sita, ತಥಾ in that way, ಗಿರಿನಿಮ್ನಗಾಮ್ mountain-river, ದರ್ಶಯಿತ್ವಾ having shown, ಮಾಂಸೇನ with meat, ಛನ್ದಯನ್ gratifying, ಗಿರಿಪ್ರಸ್ಥೇ on the mountain-slope, ನಿಷಸಾದ sat.

Rama showed Sita, the princess of Mithila the river Mandakini flowing in the mountain, gratified her by offering meat (to eat) and sat on the mountain slope.
ಇದಂ ಮೇಧ್ಯಮಿದಂ ಸ್ವಾದು ನಿಷ್ಟಪ್ತಮಿದಮಗ್ನಿನಾ.

ಏವಮಾಸ್ತೇ ಸ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.96.2৷৷

Offering Sita several kinds of preparations to eat, righteous Rama, seated in her company remarked, This meat is savoury, this meat roasted on fire is sacred.
ತಥಾ ತತ್ರಾಸತಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಭರತಸ್ಯೌಪಯಾಯಿನಃ.

ಸೈನ್ಯರೇಣುಶ್ಚ ಶಬ್ದಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಾದುರಾಸ್ತಾಂ ನಭಸ್ಪೃಶೌ৷৷2.96.3৷৷


ತಥಾ thus, ತಸ್ಯ that Rama, ತತ್ರ there, ಆಸತಃ while sitting, ಉಪಯಾಯಿನಃ approaching, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ಸೈನ್ಯರೇಣುಶ್ಚ dust raised by the army, ಶಬ್ದಶ್ಚ and tumult, ನಭಸ್ಪೃಶೌ both reaching
the sky, ಪ್ರಾದುರಾಸ್ತಾಮ್ was generated.

Now as Rama was sitting there, the tumult and the dust raised by the approaching army of Bharata reached the sky.
ಏತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನನ್ತರೇ ತ್ರಸ್ತಾ ಶ್ಶಬ್ದೇನ ಮಹತಾ ತತಃ.

ಅರ್ದಿತಾ ಯೂಥಪಾ ಮತ್ತಾ ಸ್ಸಯೂಥಾ ದುದ್ರುವುರ್ದಿಶಃ৷৷2.96.4৷৷


ಏಕಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಅನ್ತರೇ meanwhile, ಮತ್ತಾಃ mighty, ಯೂಥಪಾಃ leaders of elephant-herds, ಮಹತಾ with a loud, ಶಬ್ದೇನ noise, ತ್ರಸ್ತಾಃ were frightened, ಅರ್ದಿತಾಃ agitated ಸಯೂಥಾಃ with herds, ತತಃ from there, ದಿಶಃ in different directions, ದುದ್ರುವುಃ fled away.

Meanwhile, the mighty leaders of the elephant-herds were agitated, and frightened by the loud noise, fled away from there in different directions.
ಸ ತಂ ಸೈನ್ಯಸಮುದ್ಧೂತಂ ಶಬ್ದಂ ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ರಾಘವಃ.

ತಾಂ ಶ್ಚ ವಿಪ್ರದ್ರುತಾನ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ಯೂಥಪಾನನ್ವವೈಕ್ಷತ৷৷2.96.5৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ that Rama, ಸೈನ್ಯಸಮುದ್ಬೂತಮ್ generated by the army, ತಂ ಶಬ್ದಮ್ that sound, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ heard, ವಿಪ್ರದ್ರುತಾನ್ fleeing, ತಾನ್ those, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಯೂಥಪಾನ್ ಚ leaders of herds, ಅನ್ವವೈಕ್ಷತ saw.

Rama heard the sound generated by the army and saw those leaders of herds fleeing away.
ತಾಂಶ್ಚ ವಿದ್ರುವತೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಂ ಚ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಚ ನಿಸ್ವನಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ದೀಪ್ತತೇಜಸಮ್৷৷2.96.6৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವಿದ್ರುವತಃ running, ತಾನ್ them, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ತಮ್ them, ನಿಸ್ವನಂ also sound, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ದೀಪ್ತತೇಜಸಮ್ blazing with energy, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮ್ son of Sumitra, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ addressing Lakshmana, ಉವಾಚ said.

Seeing those animals fleeing and hearing the clamour, Rama addressed Lakshmana,
son of Sumitra, who was blazing with energy.
ಹನ್ತ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಪಶ್ಯೇಹ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಸುಪ್ರಜಾಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ.

ಭೀಮಸ್ತನಿತಗಮ್ಭೀರಸ್ತುಮುಲಃ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಸ್ವನಃ৷৷2.96.7৷৷


ಹನ್ತ Oh what a wonder, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ Lakshmana, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ Sumitra, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಸುಪ್ರಜಾಃ has a worthy son, ಇಹ here, ಭೀಮಸ್ತನಿತಗಮ್ಭೀರಃ fearful rumbling of clouds, ತುಮುಲಃ tumultous, ಸ್ವನಃ sound, ಇಹ here, ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ is being heard, ಪಶ್ಯ see.

O Lakshmana, the worthy son of Sumitra, fearful and tumultuous clamour like rumbling sound of clouds is heard. What a wonder! Go and see.
ಗಜಯೂಥಾನಿ ವಾರಣ್ಯೇ ಮಹಿಷಾ ವಾ ಮಹಾವನೇ.

ವಿತ್ರಾಸಿತಾ ಮೃಗಾ ಸ್ಸಿಂಹೈ ಸ್ಸಹಸಾ ಪ್ರದ್ರುತಾ ದಿಶಃ৷৷2.96.8৷৷


ಅರಣ್ಯೇ in the forest, ಗಜಯೂಥಾನಿ herds of elephants, ಮಹಾವನೇ in the great woods, ಮಹಿಷಾಃ ವಾ buffaloes, ಮೃಗಾಃ wild beasts, ವಿತ್ರಾಸಿತಾಃ frightened, ಸಿಂಹೈಃ by lions, ಸಹಸಾ quickly, ದಿಶಃ in directions, ಪ್ರದ್ರುತಾಃ running.

Herds of elephants and buffaloes in the great woods and wild beasts frightened by lions are running in different directions.
ರಾಜಾ ವಾ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೋ ವಾ ಮೃಗಯಾಮಟತೇ ವನೇ.

ಅನ್ಯದ್ವಾ ಶ್ವಾಪದಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ ಜ್ಞಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.96.9৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ O Lakshmana, ರಾಜಾ ವಾ king or, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೋ ವಾ or prince, ವನೇ in the forest, ಮೃಗಯಾಮ್ ಅಟತೇ is hunting, ವಾ or, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ any, ಅನ್ಯತ್ other, ಶ್ವಾಪದಮ್ ferocious animal, ಜ್ಞಾತುಮ್ to know, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ ought to

O Lakshmana, do ascertain if any king or prince has come for hunting or whether any ferocious animal has entered this forest, shouldn't you?
ಸುದುಶ್ಚರೋ ಗಿರಿಶ್ಚಾಯಂ ಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮಪಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ.

ಸರ್ವಮೇತದ್ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಮಚಿರಾತ್ ಜ್ಞಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.96.10৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಗಿರಿಃ mountain, ಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮಪಿ even to birds, ಸುದುಶ್ಚರಃ is highly inaccessible, ಏತತ್ ಸರ್ವಮ್ all this, ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಮ್ exactly, ಅಚಿರಾತ್ quickly, ಜ್ಞಾತುಮ್ to know, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ ought to.

O Lakshmana, this mountain is highly inaccessible even to birds. Find out exactly and quickly what this is all about.
ಸ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಸ್ಸನ್ತ್ವರಿತ ಸ್ಸಾಲಮಾರುಹ್ಯ ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಮ್.

ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣೋ ದಿಶ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಃ ಪೂರ್ವಾಂ ದಿಶಮುದೈಕ್ಷತ৷৷2.96.11৷৷


ಸಃ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ that Lakshmana, ಸನ್ತ್ವರಿತಃ hurriedly, ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಮ್ flowering, ಸಾಲಮ್ Sala tree, ಆರುಹ್ಯ
climbing, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ದಿಶಃ directions, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ seeing, ಪೂರ್ವಂ ದಿಶಮ್ the eastern direction, ಉದೈಕ್ಷತ looked.

Lakshmana hurriedly climbed a flowering sala tree, surveyed in all directions and fixed his gaze on the east.
ಉದಙ್ಮುಖಃ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣೋ ದದರ್ಶ ಮಹತೀಂ ಚಮೂಮ್.

ರಥಾಶ್ವಗಜಸಮ್ಬಾಧಾಂ ಯತ್ತೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಾಂ ಪದಾತಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.96.12৷৷


ಉದಙ್ಮುಖಃ facing the north, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಮಾಣಃ seeing, ರಥಾಶ್ವಗಜಸಮ್ಬಾಧಾಮ್ with chariots, elephants and horses, ಯತ್ತೈ: well-equipped, ಪದಾತಿಭಿಃ with infantry, ಯುಕ್ತಾಮ್ consisting of, ಮಹತೀಮ್ vast, ಚಮೂಮ್ army, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

Turning his face to the north, he beheld a vast army consisting of chariots, elephants and horses and a well-equipped infantry.
ತಾಮಶ್ವಗಜಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾಂ ರಥಧ್ವಜವಿಭೂಷಿತಾಮ್.

ಶಶಂಸ ಸೇನಾಂ ರಾಮಾಯ ವಚನಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.96.13৷৷


ಅಶ್ವಗಜಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಾಮ್ full of horses and elephants, ರಥಧ್ವಜವಿಭೂಷಿತಾಮ್ decorated with chariot-bannars, ತಾಂ ಸೇನಾಮ್ of the army, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಶಶಂಸ informed, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಂ ಚ words also, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

He (Lakshmana) informed Rama about the army full of horses and elephants and decorated with chariot-banners and said these words:
ಅಗ್ನಿಂ ಸಂಶಮಯತ್ವಾರ್ಯ ಸ್ಸೀತಾ ಚ ಭಜತಾಂ ಗುಹಾಮ್.

ಸಜ್ಯಂ ಕುರುಷ್ವ ಚಾಪಂ ಚ ಶರಾಂಶ್ಚ ಕವಚಂ ತಥಾ৷৷2.96.14৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಃ O noble one, ಅಗ್ನಿಮ್ sacred-fires (Agnihotra), ಸಂಶಮಯತು put off, ಸೀತಾ ಚ Sita also, ಗುಹಾಮ್ cave, ಭಜತಾಮ್ let take refuge, ಚಾಪಮ್ bow, ಸಜ್ಯಮ್ with string, ಕುರುಷ್ವ make ready, ತಥಾ so also, ಶರಾಂಶ್ಚ arrows also, ಕವಚಮ್ armour (put on).

O noble one, put out the sacred fire (Agnihotra) and let Sita take refuge in the cave. String your bow and keep the arrows ready. Put on your armour.
ತಂ ರಾಮಃ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ಅಙ್ಗಾವೇಕ್ಷಸ್ವ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ ಕಸ್ಯೇಮಾಂ ಮನ್ಯಸೇ ಚಮೂಮ್৷৷2.96.15৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ best among men, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ replied so, ಅಙ್ಗ Oh, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ Lakshmana, ಅವೇಕ್ಷಸ್ವ look, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಚಮೂಮ್ army, ಕಸ್ಯ of whom, ಮನ್ಯಸೇ do you think.

Rama the best among men replied to Lakshamana, Oh, Lakshmana, look properly and tell me to whom do you think this army might belong
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ರಾಮೇಣ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ದಿಧಕ್ಷನ್ನಿವ ತಾಂ ಸೇನಾಂ ರುಷಿತಃ ಪಾವಕೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.96.16৷৷


ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಏವಂ in that manner, ಉಕ್ತಃ having been said, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಪಾವಕೋ ಯಥಾ like a fire, ರುಷಿತಃ was wrathful, ತಾಂ ಸೇನಾಮ್ that army, ದಿಧಕ್ಷನ್ನಿವ as if he wanted to burn down, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Hearing the words of Rama, enraged Lakshmana, like a flaming fire as if he would reduce the army to ashes, replied:
ಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಿಚ್ಛಂಸ್ತು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್.

ಆವಾಂ ಹನ್ತುಂ ಸಮಭ್ಯೇತಿ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಭರತಸ್ಸುತಃ৷৷2.96.17৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ Kaikeyi's, ಸುತಃ son, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having been consecrated, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ endowed with prosperity (without obstacles), ಇಚ್ಛನ್ desiring, ಆವಾಮ್ both of us, ಹನ್ತುಮ್ to slay, ಸಮಭ್ಯೇತಿ is coming, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ this is evident.

It is evident that Kaikeyi's son Bharata, who has been consecrated, is coming to slay
both of us desiring the prosperous kingdom (to be without obstacles).
ಏಷ ವೈ ಸುಮಹಾಞ್ಛ್ರೀಮಾನ್ವಿಟಪೀ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಕಾಶತೇ.

ವಿರಾಜತ್ಯುದ್ಗತಸ್ಕನ್ಧಂ ಕೋವಿದಾರಧ್ವಜೋ ರಥೇ৷৷2.96.18৷৷


ಏಷಃ this, ಸುಮಹಾನ್ lofty, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ majestic, ಉದ್ಗತಸ್ಕನ್ಧಃ atop with large trunk, ವಿಟಪೀ tree, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಕಾಶತೇ ರಥೇ on chariot, ಕೋವಿದಾರಧ್ವಜಃ with his standard bearing the emblem of Kovidara tree, ವಿರಾಜತಿ shining brilliantly.

There on that chariot, is a banner shining brilliantly with the emblem of a lofty majestic Kovidara tree with a large trunk.
ಅಸೌ ಹಿ ಸುಮಹಾಸ್ಕನ್ಧೋ ವಿಟಪೀ ಚ ಮಹಾದ್ರುಮಃ.

ವಿರಾಜತೇ ಮಹಾಸೈನ್ಯೇ ಕೋವಿದಾರಧ್ವಜೋ ರಥೇ৷৷2.96.19৷৷


ಸುಮಹಾಸ್ಕನ್ಧಃ of very large trunk, ವಿಟಪೀ ಚ spread with many branches, ಅಸೌ this, ಮಹಾದ್ರುಮಃ
large tree, ಕೋವಿದಾರಧ್ವಜಃ standard of Kovidara, ರಥೇ on chariot, ಮಹಾಸೈನ್ಯೇ in large army, ವಿರಾಜತೇ is shining brilliantly.

There the emblem of the great Kovidara tree of very large trunk spread with many branches shines brilliantly atop the chariot.
ಭಜನ್ತ್ಯೇತೇ ಯಥಾಕಾಮಮಶ್ವಾನಾರುಹ್ಯ ಶೀಘ್ರಗಾನ್.

ಏತೇ ಭ್ರಾಜನ್ತಿ ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಗಜಾನಾರುಹ್ಯ ಸಾದಿನಃ৷৷2.96.20৷৷


ಏತೇ these, ಯಥಾಕಾಮಮ್ at their will, ಶೀಘ್ರಗಾನ್ swiftly-moving, ಅಶ್ವಾನ್ horses, ಆರುಹ್ಯ having mounted, ಭಜನ್ತಿ are following, ಏತೇ these, ಸಾದಿನಃ riders of elephants, ಗಜಾನ್ elephants, ಆರುಹ್ಯ having mounted, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾಃ cheerfully, ಭ್ರಾಜನ್ತಿ are shining.

These men mounted on swiftly-moving horses are following the post. The riders of elephants mounted on the elephants look cheerful.
ಗೃಹೀತಧನುಷೌ ಚಾವಾಂ ಗಿರಿಂ ವೀರ ಶ್ರಯಾವಹೈ.

ಅಥವೇಹೈವ ತಿಷ್ಠಾವ ಸ್ಸನ್ನದ್ಧಾವುದ್ಯತಾಯುಧೌ৷৷2.96.21৷৷


ವೀರ O mighty warrior, ಆವಾಮ್ both of us, ಗೃಹೀತಧನುಷೌ by taking up the bows, ಗಿರಿಮ್ on this mountain, ಶ್ರಯಾವಹೈ take refuge, ಅಥವಾ or, ಸನ್ನದ್ಧೌ fully prepared (for battle), ಉದ್ಯತಾಯುಧೌ with weapons in readiness, ಇಹೈವ here itself, ತಿಷ್ಠಾವಃ stay here.

O mighty warrior, let both of us take up the bows and station ourselves on this mountain or we shall stay here itself armed with weapons fully prepared for the battle.
ಅಪಿ ನೌ ವಶಮಾಗಚ್ಛೇತ್ಕೋವಿದಾರಧ್ವಜೋ ರಣೇ.

ಅಪಿ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಭರತಂ ಯತ್ಕೃತೇ ವ್ಯಸನಂ ಮಹತ್৷৷2.96.22৷৷

ತ್ವಯಾ ರಾಘವ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಸೀತಯಾ ಚ ಮಯಾ ತಥಾ.


ರಾಘವ O Rama, ರಣೇ in battle, ಕೋವಿದಾರಧ್ವಜಃ Kovidara banner, ನೌ our, ವಶಮ್ possession,
ಅಪ್ಯಾಗಚ್ಛೇತ್ will it come, ಯತ್ಕೃತೇ on whose account, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಸೀತಯಾ by Sita, ತಥಾ also, ಮಯಾ ಚ by me, ಮಹತ್ great, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ calamity, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮ್ has befallen, such, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಅಪಿ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ can I see.

O Rama, will this Kovidara emblem come into our possession in the battle? Can I see Bharata, the cause of the calamity that has befallen you, Sita and me?
ಯನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ಭವಾನ್ರಾಜ್ಯಾಚ್ಛ್ಯುತೋ ರಾಘವ ಶಾಶ್ವತಾತ್৷৷2.96.23৷৷

ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೋಯಮರಿರ್ವೀರ ಭರತೋ ವಧ್ಯ ಏವ ಮೇ.


ಹೇ ವೀರ O mighty warrior, ರಾಘವ Rama, ಭವಾನ್ you, ಯನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ on whose account, ಶಾಶ್ವತಾತ್ from the perpetual, ರಾಜ್ಯಾತ್ from kingdom, ಚ್ಯುತಃ deprived, ಅಯಮ್ such, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ has come here, ಅರಿಃ foe, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಮೇ to me, ವಧ್ಯ ಏವ deserves to be slain.

O that mighty warrior Bharata, on whose account you have been banished from the perpetual kingdom, comes here as a foe and as for me, he deserves to be slain.
ಭರತಸ್ಯ ವಧೇ ದೋಷಂ ನಾಹಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಾಘವ.

ರಾಘವ O Rama, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharta's, ವಧೇ in slaying, ಅಹಮ್ I, ದೋಷಮ್ wrong, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ do not see, ಪೂರ್ವಾಪಕಾರಿಣಮ್ one who has done harmful act earlier, ಹತ್ವಾ in slaying, ಅಧರ್ಮೇಣ with unrighteousness, ನ ಯುಜ್ಯತೇ is not attached.

O Rama, I do not see anything wrong in slaying Bharata. In killing one who had done harm is not an act of unrighteousness.

ರಾಘವ O Rama, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪೂರ್ವಾಪಕಾರೀ had done harm earlier, ತ್ಯಕ್ತಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ abandoned righteousness, ಏತಸ್ಮಿನ್ when such a person, ನಿಹತೇ after having been slain ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾಮ್ the
whole, ವಸುನ್ಧರಾಮ್ earth, ಅನುಶಾಧಿ you shall rule.

O Rama, Bharata has abandoned righteousness and has harmed you. When he is slain, you shall rule over the whole earth.
ಅದ್ಯ ಪುತ್ರಂ ಹತಂ ಸಂಖ್ಯೇ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ರಾಜ್ಯಕಾಮುಕಾ.

ಮಯಾ ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ಸುದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾ ಹಸ್ತಿಭಗ್ನಮಿವ ದ್ರುಮಮ್৷৷2.96.26৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಯಕಾಮುಕಾ greedy for the kingdom, ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಸಂಖ್ಯೇ in a battle, ಮಯಾ by me, ಹತಮ್ slain, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ಹಸ್ತಿಭಗ್ನಮ್ felled by an elephant, ದ್ರುಮಮ್ ಇವ like a tree, ಸುದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾ extremely afflicted, ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ let her see.

Let that Kaikeyi, greedy for the kingdom, see in great anguish her son who shall be slain by me today in a battle like a tree felled by an elephant.
ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ಚ ವಧಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸಾನುಬನ್ಧಾಂ ಸಬಾನ್ಧವಾಮ್.

ಕಲುಷೇಣಾದ್ಯ ಮಹತಾ ಮೇದಿನೀ ಪರಿಮುಚ್ಯತಾಮ್৷৷2.96.27৷৷


ಸಾನುಬನ್ಧಾಮ್ with her attendants, ಸಬಾನ್ಧವಾಮ್ with her relations, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ಚ also Kaikeyi, ವಧಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will slay, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಮೇದಿನೀ the earth, ಮಹತಾ by a great, ಕಲುಷೇಣ of the sin, ಪರಿಮುಚ್ಯತಾಮ್ let it be cleansed.

I shall also slay Kaikeyi with her attendants and relations. Let the earth be cleansed of the great sin today.
ಅದ್ಯೇಮಂ ಸಂಯತಂ ಕ್ರೋಧಮಸತ್ಕಾರಂ ಚ ಮಾನದ.

ಮಾನದ O protector of honour (Rama), ಸಂಯತಮ್ suppressed, ಇಮಮ್ this, ಕ್ರೋಧಮ್ anger, ಅಸತ್ಕಾರಂ ಚ dishonour, ಹುತಾಶನಮ್ fire, ಕಕ್ಷೇಷ್ವಿವ like a thicket, ಅದ್ಯ today, ಶತ್ರುಸೈನ್ಯೇಷು in the army of enemies, ಮೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall release.

O protector of honour, today I shall vent my suppressed anger and dishonour on the enemy's army like a fire on the thicket.
ಅದ್ಯೈತಚ್ಛಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ಕಾನನಂ ನಿಶಿತೈ ಶ್ಶರೈಃ.

ಛಿನ್ದಞ್ಚತ್ರುಶರೀರಾಣಿ ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ ಶೋಣಿತೋಕ್ಷಿತಮ್৷৷2.96.29৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ today, ನಿಶಿತೈಃ by the sharpened, ಶರೈಃ with arrows, ಶತ್ರುಶರೀರಾಣಿ bodies of enemies, ಛಿನ್ದನ್ rending, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ Chitrakuta's, ಏತತ್ ಕಾನನಮ್ this forest, ಶೋಣಿತೋಕ್ಷಿತಮ್ spattered with blood, ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ I shall do.

Today I shall rend the bodies of enemies with my sharpened arrows and spatter the forest of Chitrakuta mountain with their blood.
ಶರೈರ್ನಿರ್ಭಿನ್ನಹೃದಯಾನ್ಕುಞ್ಜರಾಂಸ್ತುರಗಾಂಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಶ್ವಾಪದಾಃ ಪರಿಕರ್ಷನ್ತು ನರಾಂಶ್ಚ ನಿಹತಾನ್ಮಯಾ৷৷2.96.30৷৷


ಶರೈಃ with arrows, ನಿರ್ಭಿನ್ನಹೃದಯಾನ್ with hearts transfixed, ಕುಞ್ಜರಾನ್ elephants, ತಥಾ and, ತುರಗಾನ್ horses, ಮಯಾ by me, ನಿಹತಾನ್ killed, ನರಾಂಶ್ಚ also men, ಶ್ವಾಪದಾಃ also wild beasts, ಪರಿಕರ್ಷನ್ತು let them drag off.

Let the wild beasts drag away the elephants, horses and men to be killed by me with their hearts transfixed with my arrows.
ಶರಾಣಾಂ ಧನುಷಶ್ಚಾಹಮನೃಣೋಸ್ಮಿನ್ಮಹಾವನೇ.

ಸಸೈನ್ಯಂ ಭರತಂ ಹತ್ವಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ৷৷2.96.31৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this, ಮಹಾವನೇ great forest, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸಸೈನ್ಯಮ್ with army, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಹತ್ವಾ having slain, ಶರಾಣಾಮ್ of the arrows, ಧನುಷಶ್ಚ of the bow, ಅನೃಣಃ discharging my debt, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall become, ಸಂಶಂಯಃ doubt, ನ not.

Having slain Bharata and his army in this great forest, I shall doubtless discharge my debt to my arrows and bow.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಷಣ್ಣವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ.
