[Rama's correction of Lakshmana's judgement --- Bharata's army encamped round Chitrakuta.]

ಸುಸಂರಬ್ಧಂ ತು ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಕ್ರೋಧಮೂರ್ಛಿತಮ್.

ರಾಮಸ್ತು ಪರಿಸಾನ್ತ್ವ್ಯಾಥ ವಚನಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.97.1৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ರಾಮಸ್ತು as for Rama, ಸುಸಂರಬ್ಧಮ್ violently agitated, ಕ್ರೋಧಮೂರ್ಛಿತಮ್ swooned with rage, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಮ್ to Sumitra's son, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಪರಿಸಾನ್ತ್ವ್ಯ having pacified, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಚನಂ ಚ word, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Thereafter, Rama pacified Lakshmana, son of Sumitra who was violently agitated. He said to him who had swooned with rage:
ಕಿಮತ್ರ ಧನುಷಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಮಸಿನಾ ವಾ ಸಚರ್ಮಣಾ.

ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸೇ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞೇ ಭರತೇ ಸ್ವಯಮಾಗತೇ৷৷2.97.2৷৷


ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸೇ of great strength, ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞೇ sagacious, ಭರತೇ Bharata, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಅತ್ರ here, ಆಗತೇ has come, ಧನುಷಾ with bow, ಸಚರ್ಮಣಾ with shield, ಅಸಿನಾ ವಾ or with sword, ಕಿಂ ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ where is the need?

When sagacious Bharata of great strength has come here, where is the need for a bow or a sword or a shield.
ಪಿತುಸ್ಸತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರುತ್ಯ ಹತ್ವಾ ಭರತಮಾಗತಮ್.

ಕಿಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಾಜ್ಯೇನ ಸಾಪವಾದೇನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ৷৷2.97.3৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಸತ್ಯಮ್ truth, ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರುತ್ಯ having sworn, ಆಗತಮ್ one who has come here, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಹತ್ವಾ having slain, ಸಾಪವಾದೇನ with slander, ರಾಜ್ಯೇನ with a kingdom, ಕಿಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ what shall I do?

O Lakshmana, having sworn that I would make father's word true, what shall I do with the kingdom earned slanderously by slaying Bharata who has come (to see me)?
ಯದ್ದ್ರವ್ಯಂ ಬಾನ್ಧವಾನಾಂ ವಾ ಮಿತ್ರಾಣಾಂ ವಾ ಕ್ಷಯೇ ಭವೇತ್.

ನಾಹಂ ತತ್ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಣೀಯಾಂ ಭಕ್ಷಾನ್ವಿಷಕೃತಾನಿವ৷৷2.97.4৷৷


ಯತ್ ದ್ರವ್ಯಮ್ the wealth, ಬಾನ್ಧವಾನಾಂ ವಾ of kith and kin, ಮಿತ್ರಾಣಾಂ ವಾ or friends', ಕ್ಷಯೇ ಭವೇತ್ is obtaind through destruction, ತತ್ that one, ಅಹಮ್ I, ವಿಷಕೃತಾನ್ prepared with poison, ಭಕ್ಷಾನ್ ಇವ like
eatables, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಣೀಯಾಮ್ I shall not accept.

I shall never accept any wealth obtained by destroying kith and kin or friends which is akin to taking food prepared with poison.
ಧರ್ಮಮರ್ಥಂ ಚ ಕಾಮಂ ಚ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ.

ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಭವತಾಮರ್ಥೇ ಏತತ್ ಪ್ರತಿಶೃಣೋಮಿ ತೇ৷৷2.97.5৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ righteousness, ಅರ್ಥಂ ಚ prosperity (wealth) also, ಕಾಮಂ ಚ desire, ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಚಾಪಿ earth (kingdom) also, ಭವತಾಮ್ ಅರ್ಥೇ for your sake, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I want, ಏತತ್ all this, ತೇ to you, ಪ್ರತಿಶೃಣೋಮಿ I swear.

O Lakshmana, on the oath of righteousness, I wish wealth and pleasure as well as this kingdom for the sake of you all.
ಭ್ರಾತ್ರೂಣಾಂ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾರ್ಥಂ ಚ ಸುಖಾರ್ಥಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ.

ರಾಜ್ಯಮಪ್ಯಹಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಸತ್ಯೇನಾಯುಧಮಾಲಭೇ৷৷2.97.6৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರೂಣಾಮ್ brothers', ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾರ್ಥಮ್ remain united, ಸುಖಾರ್ಥಂ ಚಾಪಿ and also for happiness, ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಜ್ಯಮಪಿ even kingdom, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I desire, ಸತ್ಯೇನ truly, ಆಯುಧಮ್ weapons, ಅಲಭೇ I hold.

O Lakshmana, I desire this kingdom only for the unity and happiness of my brothers. I
swear on the weapon I hold.
ನೇಯಂ ಮಮ ಮಹೀ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ದುರ್ಲಭಾ ಸಾಗರಾಮ್ಬರಾ.

ನ ಹೀಚ್ಛೇಯಮಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಶಕ್ರತ್ವಮಪಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ৷৷2.97.7৷৷


ಸೌಮ್ಯ O gentle, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ Lakshmana, ಸಾಗರಾಮ್ಬರಾ with the sea as garment, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಮಹೀ earth, ಮಮ to me, ದುರ್ಲಭಾ difficult, ನ not, ಅಧರ್ಮೇಣ unrighteously, ಶಕ್ರತ್ವಮಪಿ even Indra-hood, ನ ಇಚ್ಛೇಯಂ ಹಿ I do not desire.

O gentle Lakshmana, lordship of this earth with the sea as its garment is not difficult to obtain (for me). But I do not desire even Indrahood by unrighteous means.
ಯದ್ವಿನಾ ಭರತಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಮಾನದ.

ಭವೇನ್ಮಮ ಸುಖಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದ್ಭಸ್ಮ ತತ್ಕುರುತಾಂ ಶಿಖೀ৷৷2.97.8৷৷


ಮಾನದ O bestower of honour (Lakshmana), ಯತ್ any happiness, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ you also, ಶತೃಘ್ನಂ ಚಾಪಿ Satrughna too, ವಿನಾ without leaving, ಮಮ to me, ಭವೇತ್ happens, ತತ್ that, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ ಸುಖಮ್ some happines, ಶಿಖೀ fire, ಭಸ್ಮ as ashes, ಕುರುತಾಮ್ let it be reduced.

O protector of honour! even if there were to be some happiness which I could enjoy without you, Bharata, and Satrughna, let it be reduced to ashes by fire.
ಮನ್ಯೇಹಮಾಗತೋಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಭರತೋ ಭ್ರಾತೃವತ್ಸಲಃ.

ಮಮ ಪ್ರಾಣಾತ್ಪ್ರಿಯತರಃ ಕುಲಧರ್ಮಮನುಸ್ಮರನ್৷৷2.97.9৷৷

ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಂ ಮಾಂ ಹಿ ಜಟಾವಲ್ಕಲಧಾರಿಣಮ್.

ಜಾನಕ್ಯಾಸಹಿತಂ ವೀರ ತ್ವಯಾ ಚ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ৷৷2.97.10৷৷

ಸ್ನೇಹೇನಾಕ್ರಾನ್ತಹೃದಯ ಶ್ಶೋಕೇನಾಕುಲಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ.

ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಭ್ಯಾಗತೋ ಹ್ಯೇಷ ಭರತೋ ನಾನ್ಯಥಾಗತಃ৷৷2.97.11৷৷


ವೀರ O valiant one, ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ best among men, ಭ್ರಾತೃವತ್ಸಲಃ affectionate towards brothers, ಮಮ to me, ಪ್ರಾಣಾತ್ more than life, ಪ್ರಿಯತರಃ dearer, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ಆಗತಃ had returned, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಜಾನಕ್ಯಾ with Janaki, ತ್ವಯಾ ಚ with you, ಸಹಿತಮ್ in the company of, ಜಟಾವಲ್ಕಲಧಾರಿಣಮ್ wearing barks and matted locks, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಮ್ having been exiled, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ hearing, ಕುಲಧರ್ಮಮ್ duties of race, ಅನುಸ್ಮರನ್ remembering, ಸ್ನೇಹೇನ with devotion, ಆಕ್ರಾನ್ತಹೃದಯ: mind possessed by, ಶೋಕೇನ with distress, ಆಕುಲಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ with agitated senses, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಅಭ್ಯಾಗತಃ has arrived, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮನ್ಯೇ consider, ಏಷಃ ಭರತಃ this Bharata, ಅನ್ಯಥಾ for any other reason, ನ ಆಗತಃ has not come.

O best among men, O valiant one! I think Bharata who is affectionate towards his
brothers and who is dearer to me than my life, must have returned to Ayodhya and has heard that I had been exiled along with you and Janaki, wearing barks and matted locks. Remembering the duties of the race with an afflicted mind and with agitated senses he has come here to see me. He has not come with any other intention.
ಅಮ್ಬಾಂ ಚ ಕೈಕಯೀಂ ರುಷ್ಯ ಪರುಷಂ ಚಾಪ್ರಿಯಂ ವದನ್.

ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ ಪಿತರಂ ಶ್ರೀಮಾರ್ನಾಜ್ಯಂ ಮೇ ದಾತುಮಾಗತಃ৷৷2.97.12৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ auspicious Bharata, ಅಮ್ಬಾಮ್ mother, ಕೈಕಯೀಮ್ at Kaikeyi, ರುಷ್ಯ angered, ಪರುಷಮ್ harshly, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಚ bitterly, ವದನ್ speaking, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ having propitiated, ಮೇ to me, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ದಾತುಮ್ to offer, ಆಗತಃ has come.

Auspicious Bharata, angry with Kaikeyi and having spoken to her unpleasant, bitter words and having propitiated our father, has come here to offer me the kingdom.
ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಂ ಯದೇಷೋಸ್ಮಾನ್ಭರತೋ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ.

ಅಸ್ಮಾಸು ಮನಸಾಪ್ಯೇಷ ನಾಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಾಚರೇತ್৷৷2.97.13৷৷


ಏಷಃ ಭರತಃ this Bharata, ಅಸ್ಮಾನ್ us, ಯತ್ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ ಇಚ್ಛತಿ should he desire to see, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಮ್ this is appropriate time, ಏಷಃ he, ಅಸ್ಮಾಸು in us, ಮನಸಾ ಅಪಿ even by thought, ಕಿಂಚಿತ್ even a little, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ harm, ನಾಚರೇತ್ will not do.

Finding the time appropriate, Bharata has come to see us. Even in his mind he would have never thought of causing any harm to us in any way.
ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕೃತಪೂರ್ವಂ ತೇ ಭರತೇನ ಕದಾ ನು ಕಿಮ್.

ಈದೃಶಂ ವಾ ಭಯಂ ತೇದ್ಯ ಭರತಂ ಯೋತ್ರ ಶಙ್ಕಸೇ৷৷2.97.14৷৷


ಅತ್ರ here, ಯಃ such you, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಭರತಮ್ about Bharata, ಶಙ್ಕಸೇ you suspect, ತೇ to you, ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ಕದಾ ನು at any time anything, ಕಿಮ್ ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ anything disagreeable, ಈದೃಶಮ್ such, ಭಯಂ ವಾ or fear, ಕೃತಪೂರ್ವಮ್ has been done in the past.

Why are you suspicious of Bharata? Has he done anything disagreeable to you any time in the past?
ನ ಹಿ ತೇ ನಿಷ್ಠುರಂ ವಾಚ್ಯೋ ಭರತೋ ನಾಪ್ರಿಯಂ ವಚಃ.

ಅಹಂ ಹ್ಯಪ್ರಿಯಮುಕ್ತ ಸ್ಸ್ಯಾಂ ಭರತಸ್ಯಾಪ್ರಿಯೇ ಕೃತೇ৷৷2.97.15৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತೇ to you, ನಿಷ್ಠುರಮ್ harsh word, ನ ವಾಚ್ಯಃ must not speak, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ harsh, ವಚಃ words, ನ not, ಭರತಸ್ಯ to Bharata, ಅಪ್ರಿಯೇ unpleasant act, ಕೃತೇ if it has been done, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ harsh words, ಉಕ್ತಃ ಸ್ಯಾಂ ಹಿ has been told.

You must not speak any harsh or unpleasant words against Bharata. If you do, they will be deemed to be directed against me.
ಕಥಂ ನು ಪುತ್ರಾಃ ಪಿತರಂ ಹನ್ಯುಃ ಕಸ್ಯಾಂ ಚಿದಾಪದಿ.

ಭ್ರಾತಾ ವಾ ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಹನ್ಯಾತ್ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ ಪ್ರಾಣಮಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.97.16৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ O Lakshmana, ಕಸ್ಯಾಂ ಚಿತ್ ಆಪದಿ in whatever calamity, ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಕಥಂ ನು how, ಹನ್ಯುಃ can slay, ಭ್ರಾತಾ ವಾ or a brother, ಆತ್ಮನಃ as his own, ಪ್ರಾಣಮ್ life, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ his own brother, ಹನ್ಯಾತ್ will kill?

Whatever be the calamity, O Lakshmana, how will sons slay their father, or a brother kill his own brother who is as dear to him as his own life?
ಯದಿ ರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಹೇತೋಸ್ತ್ವಮಿಮಾಂ ವಾಚಂ ಪ್ರಭಾಷಸೇ.

ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಭರತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಸ್ಮೈ ಪ್ರದೀಯತಾಮ್৷৷2.97.17৷৷


ರಾಜ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಹೇತೋಃ for the sake of a kingdom, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಇಮಾಂ ವಾಚಮ್ these words, ಪ್ರಭಾಷಸೇ ಯದಿ if you are saying ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ದೃಷ್ಟವಾ seeing, ಅಸ್ಮೈ for him, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಪ್ರದೀಯತಾಮ್ be given, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall tell.

If you are saying all these words only for the sake of the kingdom, then I shall ask Bharata when I see him to offer this kingdom to you.
ಉಚ್ಯಮಾನೋಪಿ ಭರತೋ ಮಯಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ತದ್ವಚಃ.

ರಾಜ್ಯಮಸ್ಮೈ ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛೇತಿ ಬಾಢಮಿತ್ಯೇವ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.97.18৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ಭರತೋಪಿ Bharata also, ಅಸ್ಮೈ to him, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛ give, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಚ್ಯಮಾನಃ having been told, ತದ್ವಚ: that word, ಬಾಢಮ್ ಇತ್ಯೇವ certainly so, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ will say.

O Lakshmana! if I earnestly exhort Bharata to offer this kingdom to you, then on hearing those words, he would say, 'Certainly so'.
ತಥೋಕ್ತೋ ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲೇನ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ತಸ್ಯ ಹಿತೇ ರತಃ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶೇವ ಸ್ವಾನಿ ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ ಲಜ್ಜಯಾ৷৷2.97.19৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲೇನ by a man of virtuous disposition, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ by brother, ತಥಾ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ uttered, ತಸ್ಯ his brother's, ಹಿತೇ in welfare, ರತಃ devoted, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshamana, ಲಜ್ಜಯಾ with a sense of shame, ಸ್ವಾನಿ his own, ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ limbs, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶೇವ entered.

Having heard the words uttered by his brother, Rama of virtuous disposition, Lakshmana who was devoted to his brother's welfare, shrank.
ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವ್ರೀಲಿತಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ತ್ವಾಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಾಯಾತಃ ಪಿತಾ ದಶರಥ ಸ್ಸ್ವಯಮ್৷৷2.97.20৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ವ್ರೀಲಿತಃ abashed, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ replied, ಪಿತಾ father, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ತ್ವಾಂ you, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ personally, ಆಯಾತಃ has come, ಮನ್ಯೇ I think.

Hearing the words of Rama, Lakshmana was abashed and said I think it is our father, king Dasaratha who has come here personally to see you.
ವ್ರೀಲಿತಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರಾಘವಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ಏಷ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುರಿಹಾಸ್ಮಾನ್ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಾಗತಃ৷৷2.97.21৷৷


ವ್ರೀಲಿತಮ್ ashamed, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ Lakshmana, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ seeing, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ replied, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ಏಷಃ this king Dasaratha, ಅಸ್ಮಾನ್ us, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಃ has come, ಮನ್ಯೇ I think.

Observing Lakshmana's abashment, Rama said I think the mighty-armed king Dasaratha has come to see all of us here.
ಅಥವಾ ನೌ ಧ್ರುವಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಮನ್ಯಮಾನ ಸ್ಸುಖೋಚಿತೌ.

ವನವಾಸಮನುಧ್ಯಾಯ ಗೃಹಾಯ ಪ್ರತಿನೇಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.97.22৷৷


ಅಥವಾ or rather, ನೌ both of us, ಸುಖೋಚಿತೌ accustomed to comforts, ಮನ್ಯಮಾನಃ treating, ವನವಾಸಮ್ dwelling in the forest, ಅನುಧ್ಯಾಯ having thought of, ಗೃಹಾಯ to home, ಪ್ರತಿನೇಷ್ಯತಿ take back, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ this is certain, ಮನ್ಯೇ I think.

Or rather having thought of the adversities of dwelling in a forest and also by realising that both of us are accustomed to comforts, I think he has certainly come to take us back home.
ಇಮಾಂ ವಾಪ್ಯೇಷ ವೈದೇಹೀಮತ್ಯನ್ತಸುಖಸೇವಿನೀಮ್.

ಪಿತಾ ಮೇ ರಾಘವ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ವನಾದಾದಾಯ ಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.97.23৷৷


ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ my father, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ಏಷಃ ರಾಘವಃ this Raghava, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತ ಸುಖಸೇವಿನೀಮ್ brought up in every luxury, ಇಮಾಮ್ this lady, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ ವಾ or princess Vaidehi, ವನಾತ್ from the forest, ಆದಾಯ ಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ will take her back.

Our father, the prosperous Dasaratha, after withdrawing this princess Vaidehi who is brought up in luxury from the forest (to Ayodhya), will return.
ಏತೌ ತೌ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಕಾಶೇತೇ ಗೋತ್ರವನ್ತೌ ಮನೋರಮೌ.

ವಾಯುವೇಗಸಮೌ ವೀರ ಜವನೌ ತುರಗೋತ್ತಮೌ৷৷2.97.24৷৷


ವೀರ O valiant one, ಗೋತ್ರವನ್ತೌ both of them of high pedigree, ಮನೋರಮೌ charming, ವಾಯುವೇಗಸಮೋ wind-swift, ಜವನೌ both swift, ತೌ those, ಏತೌ these two, ತುರಗೋತ್ತಮೌ splendid horses, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಕಾಶೇತೇ are shining.

O valiant warrior, you can see those two splendid horses of high pedigree, charming, swift and equal to wind in speed are shining (in the army).
ಸ ಏಷ ಸುಮಹಾಕಾಯಃ ಕಮ್ಪತೇ ವಾಹಿನೀಮುಖೇ.

ನಾಗಶ್ಶತ್ರುಞ್ಜಯೋ ನಾಮ ವೃದ್ಧಸ್ತಾತಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ৷৷2.97.25৷৷


ಸುಮಹಾಕಾಯಃ huge, ಶತ್ರುಞ್ಜಯಃ named Satrunjaya, ಧೀಮತಃ of the sagacious, ತಾತಸ್ಯ father's, ಸಃ that, ವೃದ್ಧಃ aged, ನಾಗಃ elephant, ಏಷಃ here it is, ವಾಹಿನೀಮುಖೇ at the head of the army, ಕಮ್ಪತೇ moving about.

There is that huge and aged elephant named Satrunjaya which belogns to our sagacious father proceeding at the head of the army.
ಪಿತುರ್ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ ಸಂಶಯೋ ಭವತೀಹ ಮೇ৷৷2.97.26৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ O long-armed one, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಮ್ white in colour, ಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್ well-respected by men, ದಿವ್ಯಮ್ splendid, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ತತ್ then, ಛತ್ರಂ ತು canopy, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I do not see, ಇಹ in this matter, ಮೇ to me, ಸಂಶಯಃ doubt, ಭವತಿ is arising.

I do not see, O long-armed one! that splendid white canopy of my father, well-respected by men. And this gives rise to doubts in my mind.
ವೃಕ್ಷಾಗ್ರಾದವರೋಹ ತ್ವಂ ಕುರು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಮದ್ವಚಃ.

ಇತೀವ ರಾಮೋ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಂ ತಮುವಾಚ ಹ৷৷2.97.27৷৷


ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ O Lakshmana, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ವೃಕ್ಷಾಗ್ರಾತ್ from the tree top, ಅವರೋಹ climb down, ಮದ್ವಚಃ my words, ಕುರು follow, ಇತೀವ thus, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ the righteous one, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಂ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಮ್ to that Lakshmana, ಉವಾಚ ಹ said.

Get off the tree-top, O Lakshmana, and do what I say said the righteous Rama.
ಅವತೀರ್ಯ ತು ಸಾಲಾಗ್ರಾತ್ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಸ ಸಮಿತಿಞ್ಜಯಃ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ಭೂತ್ವಾ ತಸ್ಥೌ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಃ৷৷2.97.28৷৷


ಸಮಿತಿಞ್ಜಯಃ conqueror of the enemy, ಸಃ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ that Lakshmana, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಸಾಲಾಗ್ರಾತ್ from the top of that sala tree, ಅವತೀರ್ಯ having descended, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ ಭೂತ್ವಾ with folded palms, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಃ by the side of, ತಸ್ಥೌ stood.

Lakshmana, the conqueror of foes, descended from the top of the sala tree and stood by the side of Rama with folded palms.
ಭರತೇನಾಪಿ ಸನ್ದಿಷ್ಟಾ ಸಮ್ಮರ್ದೋ ನ ಭವೇದಿತಿ.

ಸಮನ್ತಾತ್ತಸ್ಯ ಶೈಲಸ್ಯ ಸೇನಾ ವಾಸಮಕಲ್ಪಯತ್৷৷2.97.29৷৷


ಸಮ್ಮರ್ದಃ crowding, ನ ಭವೇತ್ let it not happen, ಇತಿ thus, ಭರತೇನಾಪಿ by Bharata also, ಸನ್ದಿಷ್ಟಾ instructed, ಸೇನಾ army, ತಸ್ಯ ಶೈಲಸ್ಯ that mountain's, ಸಮನ್ತಾತ್ around, ಆವಾಸಮ್ encampment, ಅಕಲ್ಪಯತ್ made.

Let not the hermitage be crowded commanded Bharata, and the army encamped around the mountain.
ಅಧ್ಯರ್ಧಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಚಮೂರ್ಯೋಜನಂ ಪರ್ವತಸ್ಯ ಸಾ.

ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ ನ್ಯವಿಶದಾವೃತ್ಯ ಗಜವಾಜಿರಥಾಕುಲಾ৷৷2.97.30৷৷


ಗಜವಾಜಿರಥಾಕುಲಾ with throngs of horses, elephants and chariots, ಸಾ that, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಚಮೂಃ the army of the descendant of Ikshvaku, ಅಧ್ಯರ್ಧಯೋಜನಮ್ a distance more than one and a half yojanas, ಪರ್ವತಸ್ಯ mountain's, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ by the side of, ಆವೃತ್ಯ having surrounded, ನ್ಯವಿಶತ್
encamped.

Bharata's army full of horses, elephants and chariots covering a distance of more than one and a half yojanas encamped by the side of the mountain.
ಸಾ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೇ ಭರತೇನ ಸೇನಾ ಧರ್ಮಂ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ವಿಧೂಯ ದರ್ಪಮ್.

ಪ್ರಸಾದನಾರ್ಥಂ ರಘುನನ್ದನಸ್ಯ ವಿರಾಜತೇ ನೀತಿಮತಾ ಪ್ರಣೀತಾ৷৷2.97.31৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಮ್ righteousness, ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ್ಯ adopting, ದರ್ಪಮ್ pride, ವಿಧೂಯ casting aside, ರಘುನನ್ದನಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪ್ರಸಾದನಾರ್ಥಮ್ to propitiate, ನೀತಿಮತಾ by a moralist, ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ಪ್ರಣೀತಾ having been brought, ಸಾ that, ಸೇನಾ army, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೇ on Chitrakuta, ವಿರಾಜತೇ was shining.

The army brought by Bharata, the great moralist, was shining around Chitrakuta mountain following dharma, and casting off all pride, in order to please Rama.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತನವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the ninetyseventh sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
