ವಿಭುಃ the lord, ಪಾದವತಾಮ್ among the bipeds, ವರಃ best, ಸಃ that Bharata, ಸೇನಾಮ್ army, ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ after encamping, ಗುರುವರ್ತಕಮ್ devoted the preceptor (father), ಕಾಕುತ್ಥ್ಸಮ್ Rama, ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ on foot, ಅಭಿಗನ್ತುಮ್ to approach, ಇಯೇಷ wished.
On encamping the army, lord Bharata, the best among men, wished to approach on
foot Rama who was devoted to his father.

ಸೈನ್ಯೇ army, ಯಥೋದ್ದೇಶಮ್ in assigned places, ನಿವಿಷ್ಟಮಾತ್ರೇ after encamping, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ brother, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಮ್ to Satrughna, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
After the army encamped in the assigned places, Bharata said to his brother Satrughna thus:
ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ವನಮಿದಂ ಸೌಮ್ಯ! ನರಸಙ್ಘೈ ಸ್ಸಮನ್ತತಃ.

ಸೌಮ್ಯ! O dear Satrughna, ನರಸಙ್ಘೈ: with groups of people, ಸಹಿತೈಃ accompanied by, ಲುಬ್ಧೈಶ್ಚ in the company of hunters as well, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಇದಂ ವನಮ್ this forest, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ all over, ಅನ್ವೇಷಿತುಮ್ to explore, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ should.
O dear Satrughna, you should explore this forest quickly along with groups of our
people and hunters as well.

ಗುಹಃ Guha, ಶರಚಾಪಾಸಿಧಾರಿಣಾ armed with bows, arrows and swords, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಸಹಸ್ರೇಣ with a thousand kinsmen, ಪರಿವೃತಃ surrounded by, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ in this forest, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಮ್ Rama, ಸಮನ್ವೇಷತು explore.
Let Guha, surrounded by a thousand kinsmen and armed with bows, arrows and swords look for Rama.
ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈ ಸ್ಸಹ ಪೌರೈಶ್ಚ ಗುರುಭಿಶ್ಚ ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಭಿಃ.

ಸ್ವಯಮ್ I myself, ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ ಸಹ with counsellors, ಪೌರೈಶ್ಚ with citizens, ಗುರುಭಿಶ್ಚ with preceptors, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಭಿಃ with brahmins, ಪರಿವೃತಃ surrounded by, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ವನಮ್ forest, ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ on foot, ಚರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall move about.
'I myself shall go on foot surrounded by ministers, citizens, preceptors and brahmins and search the entire forest.
ಯಾವನ್ನ ರಾಮಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ವಾ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್.

'I shall not rest in peace until I see Rama, powerful Lakshmana and illustrious princess of Videha (Sita).

ಚನ್ದ್ರಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ radiant as the Moon, ಪದ್ಮಪಲಾಶಾಕ್ಷಮ್ eyes resembling lotus-petals, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ brother Rama, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ಆನನಮ್ face, ಯಾವತ್ till such time, ನ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I do not see, ಮೇ to me, ಶಾನ್ತಿಃ peace, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ shall not come.
I shall not attain peace until I see my brother, Rama whose auspicious countenance looks radiant as the Moon and whose eyes as lotus-petals.
ಯಾವನ್ನ ಚರಣೌ ಭ್ರಾತುಃ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವವ್ಯಞ್ಜನಾನ್ವಿತೌ.

ಭ್ರಾತುಃ brother's, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವವ್ಯಞ್ಜನಾನ್ವಿತೌ bearing the signs of royalty, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಯಾವತ್ till such time, ಶಿರಸಾ with the head, ನ ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will not carry, ಮೇ to me, ಶಾನ್ತಿ: peace, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ shall not come.
Peace shall not come to me until I hold on my head the feet of my brother, the insignia of royalty.
ಯಾವನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ರಾಜ್ಯಾರ್ಹಃ ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ.
ಅಭಿಷೇಕಜಲಕ್ಲಿನ್ನೋ ನ ಮೇ ಶಾನ್ತಿರ್ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.98.9৷৷

ರಾಜ್ಯಾರ್ಹಃ one who is worthy of this kingdom, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಜಲಕ್ಲಿನ್ನಃ wet with the holy waters of consecration, ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹೇ pertaining to our father and forefathers, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in the kingdom, ಯಾವತ್ till such time, ನ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ is not established, ಮೇ my, ಶಾನ್ತಿಃ peace, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ shall not attain.
I shall not attain peace until Rama, who is worthy of this kingdom, is sprinkled with the holy water of coronation and assumes the ancestral kingdom.
ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಃ ಖಲು ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರ್ಯಶ್ಚನ್ದ್ರವಿಮಲೋಪಮಮ್.
ಮುಖಂ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ರಾಜೀವಾಕ್ಷಂ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿ৷৷2.98.10৷৷
ಮುಖಂ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ರಾಜೀವಾಕ್ಷಂ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿ৷৷2.98.10৷৷
ಯಃ who, ಚನ್ದ್ರವಿಮಲೋಪಮಮ್ like the spotless Moon, ರಾಜೀವಾಕ್ಷಮ್ whose eyes resemble red lotuses, ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿ of great effulgence, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಮುಖಮ್ countenance, ಪಶ್ಯತಿ beholds, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಃ Lakshmana, ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥಃ ಖಲು blessed indeed.
Lakshmana, one who beholds the highly effulgent countenance of Rama, resembling the spotless Moon and whose eyes resemble red lotuses, is blessed indeed!
ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಾ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ.
ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಸಾಗರಾನ್ತಾಯಾಃ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾ ಯಾನುಗಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.98.11৷৷
ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಸಾಗರಾನ್ತಾಯಾಃ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾ ಯಾನುಗಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷2.98.11৷৷
ಯಾ that Sita, ಸಾಗರಾನ್ತಾಯಾಃ bounded by the ocean, ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಃ of the earth, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ Rama as lord, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛತಿ who is following, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾ illustrious lady, ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜಾ daughter of Janaka, ವೈದೇಹೀ princess of Videha (Sita), ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಾ has accomplished her purpose.
Sita, the illustrious daughter of Janaka and princess of Videha, has accomplished her purpose by following Rama, the lord of this earth bounded by the ocean.
ಸುಭಗಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೋಸೌ ಗಿರಿರಾಜೋಪಮೋ ಗಿರಿಃ.
ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ವಸತಿ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ ಕುಬೇರ ಇವ ನನ್ದನೇ৷৷2.98.12৷৷
ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ವಸತಿ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ ಕುಬೇರ ಇವ ನನ್ದನೇ৷৷2.98.12৷৷
ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ: Rama, ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ on which, ಕುಬೇರಃ Kubera, the lord of wealth, ನನ್ದನೇ ಇವ like in the Nandana garden, ವಸತಿ staying, ಅಸೌ such, ಗಿರಿರಾಜೋಪಮಃ comparable to the king of the mountains, Himavan, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಃ ಗಿರಿಃ Chitrakuta mountain, ಸುಭಗಃ is fortunate.
Like Kubera in the Nandana garden, Rama lives here on mount Chitrakuta which is indeed blessed like the Himalaya, king of the mountains.
ಕೃತಕಾರ್ಯಮಿದಂ ದುರ್ಗಂ ವನಂ ವ್ಯಾಲನಿಷೇವಿತಮ್.
ಯದಧ್ಯಾಸ್ತೇ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ರಾಮ ಶ್ಶಸ್ತ್ರಭೃತಾಂ ವರಃ৷৷2.98.13৷৷
ಯದಧ್ಯಾಸ್ತೇ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ರಾಮ ಶ್ಶಸ್ತ್ರಭೃತಾಂ ವರಃ৷৷2.98.13৷৷
ಶಸ್ತ್ರಭೃತಾಮ್ among those who wield weapons, ವರಃ the foremost, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ most radiant, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಯತ್ that, ಅಧ್ಯಾಸ್ತೇ is dwelling, ವ್ಯಾಲನಿಷೇವಿತಮ್ inhabited by wild animals, ದುರ್ಗಮ್ inaccessible, ಇದಂ ವನಮ್ this forest, ಕೃತಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ accomplished its task.
Fortunate is this inaccessible forest which is inhabited by wild animals to have become the dwelling place of the most radiant Rama, the foremost among the wielders of weapons.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಭರತಃ ಪುರಷರ್ಷಭಃ.

Bharata, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಮಹತ್ great, ವನಮ್ forest, ಪದ್ಭ್ಯಾಮೇವ on foot alone, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.
Having said thus, the best of men, mighty-armed and highly energetic Bharata entered the great forest on foot.
ಸ ತಾನಿ ದ್ರುಮಜಾಲಾನಿ ಜಾತಾನಿ ಗಿರಿಸಾನುಷು.

ವದತಾಮ್ among the eloquent, ವರ: best, ಸಃ that, ಗಿರಿಸಾನುಷು on mountain slopes, ಜಾತಾನಿ growing, ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಾಗ್ರಾಣಿ tops of trees in bloom, ತಾನಿ those, ದ್ರುಮಜಾಲಾನಿ ಮಧ್ಯೇನ through the midst of multitude of trees, ಜಗಾಮ went.
Bharata, the best among the eloquent, made his way amidst multitude of trees grown on mountain slopes with their tops in full bloom.
ಸ ಗಿರೇಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ಸಾಲಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಮ್.
ರಾಮಾಶ್ರಮಗತಸ್ಯಾಗ್ನೇರ್ದದರ್ಶ ಧ್ವಜಮುಚ್ಛ್ರಿತಮ್৷৷2.98.16৷৷

ಸಃ that, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ಗಿರೇಃ atop Chitrakuta mountain, ಪುಷ್ಪಿತಮ್ flowering, ಸಾಲಮ್ sala trees, ಅಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ರಾಮಾಶ್ರಮಗತಸ್ಯ in Rama's hermitage, ಅಗ್ನೇಃ of the burning fire, ಉಚ್ಛ್ರಿತಂ lofty, ಧ್ವಜಮ್ banner of smoke, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.
Having reached a flowering sala tree atop Chitrakuta mountain, he beheld a lofty banner of smoke rising from the fire burning in Rama's hermitage.
ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಭರತ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ಮುಮೋದ ಸಹ ಬಾನ್ಧವಃ.
ಅತ್ರ ರಾಮ ಇತಿ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಗತಃ ಪಾರಮಿವಾಮ್ಭಸಃ৷৷2.98.17৷৷
ಅತ್ರ ರಾಮ ಇತಿ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಗತಃ ಪಾರಮಿವಾಮ್ಭಸಃ৷৷2.98.17৷৷
ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ the majestic, ಸಹ ಬಾನ್ಧವಃ with relatives, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತಮ್ that smoke, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅತ್ರ ಇತಿ here he is, ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ having known, ಅಮ್ಭಸಃ of waters, ಪಾರಮ್ the other bank, ಗತಃ ಇವ having reached, ಮುಮೋದ rejoiced.
On seeing the smoke, majestic Bharata in the company of relatives concluded that Rama was staying there and rejoiced like a man who had reached the other bank of the river.
ಸ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೇ ತು ಗಿರೌ ನಿಶಮ್ಯವ ರಾಮಾಶ್ರಮಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಜನೋಪಪನ್ನಮ್.
ಗುಹೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ತ್ವರಿತೋ ಜಗಾಮ ಪುನರ್ನಿವೇಶ್ಯೈವ ಚಮೂಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ৷৷2.98.18৷৷
ಗುಹೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ತ್ವರಿತೋ ಜಗಾಮ ಪುನರ್ನಿವೇಶ್ಯೈವ ಚಮೂಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ৷৷2.98.18৷৷
ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ the magnanimous one, ಸಃ that Bharata, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟೇ ಗಿರೌ on Chitrakuta mountain, ಪುಣ್ಯಜನೋಪಪನ್ನಮ್ inhabited by pious men, ರಾಮಾಶ್ರಮಮ್ Rama's hermitage, ನಿಶಮ್ಯ having heard about, ಚಮೂಮ್ the army, ನಿವೇಶ್ಯೈವ having camped at a distance, ಪುನಃ again, ಗುಹೇನ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ with Guha, ತ್ವರಿತಃ quickly, ಜಗಾಮ went.
Having heard of Rama's hermitage on the Chitrakuta mountain inhabited by pious men, magnanimous Bharata, commanded his army to stay at a distance, and quickly proceeded with Guha.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟನವತಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the ninetyeighth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
