Sloka & Translation

[Vasistha explains about Brahman and about upholding of values by the Ikshvaku family -- persuades Rama the eldest son to rightfully occupy the throne.]

क्रुद्धमाज्ञाय रामं तु वसिष्ठः प्रत्युवाच ह।

जाबालिरपि जानीते लोकस्यास्य गतागतिम्।।2.110.1।।


रामम् Rama, क्रुद्धम् as wrathful, आज्ञाय having perceived, वसिष्ठः Vasistha, प्रत्युवाच ह intercedes, जाबालिरपि Jabali also, अस्य लोकस्य to this world, गतागतिम् exits and entrances, जानीते is aware.

Seeing Rama angry Vasistha intercedes, saying that Jabali is wellaware of the exits and entrances of humans on earth.
निवर्तयितुकामस्तु त्वामेतद्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।

इमां लोकसमुत्पत्तिं लोकनाथ निबोध मे।।2.110.2।।
 

त्वाम् to you, निवर्तयितुकामश्तु only with the intention to make you return, एतत् all this, वाक्यम् statement, उक्तवान् had spoken, लोकनाथ O lord of the worlds, इमाम् this, लोकसमुत्पत्तिम् origin of the world, मे to (from) me, निबोध get yourself acquainted.

O lord of the worlds, Jabali had spoken all this only with the intention to make you return (to Ayodhya). Listen I shall (now) relate to you the origin of the world.
सर्वं सलिलमेवासीत्पृथिवी यत्र निर्मिता।

तत: स‌मभवद्ब्रह्मा स्वयम्भूर्दैवतै: स‌ह।।2.110.3।।
 

सर्वम् all, सलिलम् एव आसीत् all this was water, यत्र where, पृथिवी the earth, निर्मिता was formed, ततः thereafter, स्वयंभूः the selfexistent, ब्रह्मा Brahma, दैवतैस्सह along with the gods, समभवत् came into existence.

At the beginning, all this was water from which the earth was created. Thereafter, the selfexistent Brahma along with the gods came into existence.
स वराहस्ततो भूत्वा प्रोज्जहार वसुन्धराम्।

असृजच्च जगत्सर्वं सह पुत्रैः कृतात्मभिः।।2.110.4।।


ततः then, सः he, वराहः in the form of a boar, भूत्वा becoming, वसुन्धराम् this earth, प्रोज्जहार uplifted, कृतात्मभिः by purified souls, पुत्रैः सह with sons, जगत् the world, असृजच्छ created.

Then he assumed the form of a boar and uplifted the earth and created this world with his progeny of purified souls.
आकाशप्रभवो ब्रह्मा शाश्वतो नित्य अव्ययः।

तस्मान्मरीचि: संज‌ज्ञे मरीचेः कश्यप: सुतः।।2.110.5।।
 

शाश्वतः eternal, नित्यः changeless, अव्ययः imperishable, ब्रह्मा Brahma, आकाशप्रभवः arose
from space (as his birthplace), तस्मात् from him, मरीचिः Marichi, सञ्जज्ञे was born, कश्यपः Kasyapa, मरीचेः Marichi's, सुतः son.

Eternal, changeless and imperishable Brahma arose from space and to him was born Marichi and to Marichi, Kasyapa.
विवस्वान्काश्यपात् जज्ञे मनुर्वैवस्वत: स्वयम्।

स तु प्रजापतिः पूर्वमिक्ष्वाकुस्तु मनो: सुतः।।2.110.6।।
 

काश्यपात् from Kasyapa, विवस्वान् Vivaswat (Sun), जज्ञे was born, मनुः Manu, वैवस्वतः Vivaswat's, सुतः son, स तु as for him, पूर्वम् first, प्रजापतिः Prajapati, इक्ष्वाकुः Ikshvaku, मनोः Manu's, सुतः son.

Kasyapa begot Vivaswat (the Sun) and Vivaswat, Manu. This Manu was the first Prajapati to him whom was born Ikshvaku.
यस्येयं प्रथमं दत्ता समृद्धा मनुना मही।

तमिक्ष्वाकुमयोध्यायां राजानं विद्धि पूर्वकम्।।2.110.7।।


यस्य to whom, प्रथमम् originally, समृद्धा prosperous, मही earth, मनुना by Manu, दत्ता was bestowed, तम् that, इक्ष्वाकुम् Ikshvaku, अयोध्यायाम् of Ayodhya, पूर्वकम् first, राजानम् king, विद्धि please know.

Manu had orginally bestowed the most prosperous earth on Ikshvaku and you know Ikshvaku was the first king of Ayodhya.
इक्ष्वाकोस्तु सुत श्रीमान्कुक्षिरेवेति विश्रुतः।

कुक्षेरथात्मजो वीरो विकुक्षिरुदपद्यत।।2.110.8।।


इक्ष्वाकोः Ikshaku's, सुतः son, श्रीमान् illustrious, कुक्षिरेवेति as Kukshi, विश्रुतः wellknown, अथ thereafter, कुक्षेः Kukshi's, आत्मजः son, वीरः heroic, विकुक्षिः Vikukshi, उदपद्यत was born.

Ikshvaku had an illustrious son, wellknown as Kukshi and to Kukshi was born the heroic Vikukshi.
विकुक्षेस्तु महातेजा बाणः पुत्र प्रतापवान्।

बाणस्य तु महाबाहुरनरण्यो महात‌पा:।।2.110.9।।
 

विकुक्षेः Vikukshi's, महातेजाः highly energetic, प्रतापवान् powerful, बाणः Bana, पुत्र: son, बाणस्य to Bana, महाबाहुः mighty armed, महायशाः of great renown, अनरण्यः Anaranya was born.

The son of Vikukshi was highly energetic and powerful Bana and to him was born the mightyarmed Anaranya of great renown.
नानावृष्टिर्बभूवास्मिन्नदुर्भिक्षं सतां वरे।

अनरण्ये महाराजे तस्करो नापि कश्चन।।2.110.10।।


सताम् among the virtuous, वरे the best, अस्मिन् in this, अनरण्ये in Anaranya, महाराजे when he was king, अनावृष्टिः drought, न बभूव did not take place, दुर्भिक्षम् famine, न not, तस्करः thieves, कश्चन none, न not.

When Anaranya, the best of the virtuous, was ruling the kingdom, there was no drought, no famine and not even a thief (in his kingdom).
अनरण्यान्महाबाहुः पृथु राजा बभूव ह।

तस्मात्पृथोमेहाराजस्त्रिशङ्कुरुदपद्यत।।2.110.11।।

स सत्यवचनाद् वीर: स‌शरीरो दिवं गतः।
 

अनरण्यात् of Anaranya, महाबाहुः mightyarmed, पृथुः Prithu, राजा king, बभूव ह was born, तस्मात् पृथोः from that Prithu, त्रिशङ्कुः Trishanku, महाराजः great king, उदपद्यत was born, सः
वीरः that heroic man, सत्यवचनात् on account of his truthfulness, सशरीरः with his physical body, दिवम् heaven, गतः ascended.

Mightyarmed king Prithu was the son of Anaranya and Prithu was father of the great king Trishanku. That heroic Trishanku, on account of his truthfulness ascended the heaven with his physical body.
त्रिशङ्कोरभवत्सूनुर्दुन्धुमारो महायशाः।।2.110.12।।

दुन्धुमारान्महातेजा युवनाश्वो व्यजायत।


त्रिशङ्कोः to Trishanku, महायशाः of illustrious, दुन्धुमारः Dundhumara, सूनुः as son, अभवत् became, दुन्धुमारात् from Dundhumara, महातेजाः exceedingly powerful, युवनाश्वः Yuvanaswa, व्यजायत was born.

Trishanku's son was illustrious Dundhumara, father of the exceedingly powerful Yuvanaswa.
युवनाश्वसुत श्श्रीमान्मान्धाता समपद्यत।।2.110.13।।

मान्धातुस्त महातेजा: सुसन्धिरुदपद्यत।

सुसन्धेरपि पुत्रौ द्वौ ध्रुवसन्धिः प्रसेनजित्।।2.110.14।।

यशस्वी ध्रुवसन्धेस्तु भरतो रिपुसूदनः।
 

श्रीमान् majestic, मान्धाता Mandhata, युवनाश्वसुतः as Yuvanasva's son, समपद्यत was born, मन्धातुः to Mandhat, महातेजाः mighty, सुसन्धि Susandhi, उदपध्यत was born, सुसंधेरपि and to Susandhi, ध्रुवसंधिः Dhruvasandhi, प्रसेनजित् Prasenjit, द्वौ two, पुत्रौ sons, यशस्वी renowned, रिपुसूदनः slayer of enemies, भरतः Bharata ध्रुवसन्धेः born to Dhruvasandhi.

Majestic Mandhata was Yuvanasva's son and father of mighty Susandhi. Sudsandhi had two sons Dhruvasandhi and Prasenjit. Renowned Bharata, slayer of enemies, was the son of Dhruvasandhi.
युवनाश्वसुत श्श्रीमान्मान्धाता समपद्यत।।2.110.13।।

मान्धातुस्त महातेजा स्सुसन्धिरुदपद्यत।

सुसन्धेरपि पुत्रौ द्वौ ध्रुवसन्धिः प्रसेनजित्।।2.110.14।।

यशस्वी ध्रुवसन्धेस्तु भरतो रिपुसूदनः।


श्रीमान् majestic, मान्धाता Mandhata, युवनाश्वसुतः as Yuvanasva's son, समपद्यत was born, मन्धातुः to Mandhat, महातेजाः mighty, सुसन्धि Susandhi, उदपध्यत was born, सुसंधेरपि and to Susandhi, ध्रुवसंधिः Dhruvasandhi, प्रसेनजित् Prasenjit, द्वौ two, पुत्रौ sons, यशस्वी renowned, रिपुसूदनः slayer of enemies, भरतः Bharata ध्रुवसन्धेः born to Dhruvasandhi.

Majestic Mandhata was Yuvanasva's son and father of mighty Susandhi. Sudsandhi had two sons Dhruvasandhi and Prasenjit. Renowned Bharata, slayer of enemies, was the son of Dhruvasandhi.
भरतात्तु महाबाहोरसितो नाम जायत।।2.110.15।।

यस्यैते प्रतिराजान उदपद्यन्त शत्रवः।

हैहयास्तालजङ्घाश्च शूराश्च शशिबिन्दवः।।2.110.16।।


महाबाहोः of the mightyarmed, भरतात् Bharata, असितो नाम named Asita, (अ)जायत was born, यस्य to him, हैहयाः Haihayas, तालजङ्घाश्च Talajanghas, शूराः indomitable, शशिबिन्दवश्च Sasibindus also, प्रतिराजानः rival kings, शत्रवः as enemies, उदपद्यन्त rose up.

Mightyarmed Bharata had a son named Asita against whom the Haihayas, Talajanghas and the indomitable Sasibindus, the rival kings rose as enenmies.
तांस्तु सर्वान्प्रतिव्यूह्य युद्धे राजा प्रवासितः।

स च शैलवरे रम्ये बभूवाभिरतो मुनिः।।2.110.17।।


राजा the king, युद्धे in battle, तान् सर्वान् all of them, प्रतिव्यूह्य having engaged, प्रवासितः driven
into exile, सः he, रम्ये in a delightful, शैलवरे on a tall mountain, अभिरतः contented, मुनिः sage, बभूव became.

Although king Asita engaged all of them in a battle, he was (defeated and) driven into exile. He retired to a delightful, tall mountain and lived a life of contentment of a sage.
द्वे चास्य भार्ये गर्भिण्यौ बभूवतुरिति श्रुतिः।

एका गर्भविनाशाय सपत्न्यै गरलं ददौ।।2.110.18।।


अस्य his, द्वे भार्ये two wives, गर्भिण्यौ बभूवतुः became pregnant, इति like this, श्रुतिः it is said, एका one, गर्भविनाशाय to destroy the embryo, सपत्नयै to her cowife, गरलम् poison, ददौ gave.

Both his wives became pregnant. It is said that one of them gave the other poison (with the motive) to destroy the embryo.
भार्गवश्च्यवनो नाम हिमवन्तमुपाश्रितः।

तमृषिं समुपागम्य कालिन्दी त्वभ्यवादयत्।।2.110.19।।

स तामभ्यवदद्विप्रो वरेप्सुं पुत्रजन्मनि।


भार्गवः descendant of Bhrigu, च्यवनो नाम Chyavana by name, हिमवन्तम् Himavat mountain, उपाश्रितः had taken shelter, कालिन्दी Kalindi, तं ऋषिम् that rishi, समुपागम्य having approached, अभ्यवादयत् paid obeisance, सः विप्रः that brahmin, पुत्रजन्मनि for the birth of a son, वरेप्सुम् craving for a boon, ताम् to her, अभ्यवदत् said.

पुत्रस्ते भविता देवि महात्मा लोकविश्रुतः।।2.110.20।।

धार्मिकश्च सुशीलश्च वंशकर्ताऽरिसूदनः।


देवि O queen, ते to you, महात्मा magnanimous, लोक विश्रुतः renowned in the world, धार्मिकश्च virtuous, सुशीलश्च of good conduct, वंशकर्ता perpetuator of the race, अरिसूदनः destroyer of enemies, पुत्र a son, भविता will be born.

O queen, you will beget a son who will be magnanimous, virtuous, renowned in the world. He will be the perpetuator of the race and destroyer of enemies.
कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणं हृष्टा मुनिंतमनुमान्य च।।2.110.21।।

पद्मपत्रसमानाक्षं पद्मगर्भसमप्रभम्।

तत: सा गृहमागम्य देवी पुत्रं व्यजायत।।2.110.22।।
 

सा देवी that queen, हृष्टा delighted, तं मुनिम् to that sage, प्रदक्षिणं circumambulation, कृत्वा having made, अनुमान्य च taking leave of him, ततः then, गृहम् to home, आगम्य having returned, पद्मपत्रसमानाक्षम् with eyes like lotus petals, पद्मगर्भसमप्रभम् resplendent like Brahma, पुत्रम् son, व्यजायत gave birth.

The queen was happy. She circumambulated the sage, took leave of him and came back home. Thereafter, she gave birth to a son who had eyes like lotus petals and who
looked resplendent like Brahma.
सपत्न्या तु गरस्तस्यै दत्तो गर्भजिघांसया।

गरेण सह तेनैव जात स्स सगरोऽभवत्।।2.110.23।।


सपत्नया by her cowife, गर्भजिघांसया with a motive to destroy the embryo, तस्यै to her, गरः poison, दत्तः given, तेन for that reason, गरेण सहैव with poison, जातः born, सः he, सगरः Sagara, अभवत् became.

With a motive to destroy the embryo her cowife had poisoned her. That child was born with gara or poison for which he was called Sagara.
स राजा सगरो नाम य: स‌मुद्रमखानयत्।

इष्ट्वा पर्वणि वेगेन त्रासयन इमाः प्रजाः।।2.110.24।
 

सः he, सगरो नाम राजा a king, Sagara by name, यः who, इष्ट्वा having performed a sacrifice, पर्वणि on a fullmoon day, वेगेन swiftly, इमाः प्रजाः these men, त्रासयन्तम् frightening, समुद्रम् the ocean, अखानयत् excavated.

The king Sagara performed a sacrifice on the fullmoon day. And swiftly dug the ocean that frightened the people.
असमञ्जस्तु पुत्रोऽभूत्सगरस्येति न श्श्रुतम्।

जीवन्नेव स पित्रा तु निरस्तः पापकर्मकृत्।।2.110.25।।


असमञ्जः Asamanja, सगरस्य Sagara's, पुत्रः son, अभूत् became, इति thus, नः for us, श्रुतम् heard, पापकर्मकृत् one who indulged in sinful deeds, सः he, जीवन्नेव while he was living in the kingdom, पित्रा by father, निरस्तः banished.

We have heard that a son, Asamanja by name, was born to Sagara. For his sinful deeds he was banished by his father while he was still alive.
अंशुमानिति पुत्रोऽभूदसमञ्जस्य वीर्यवान्।

दिलीपोंशुमतः पुत्रो दिलीपस्य भगीरथः।।2.110.26।।


असमञ्जस्य Asamanja's, वीर्यवान् valiant, अंशुमानिति Anshuman by name, पुत्रः son, अभूत् was born, दिलीपः Dilipa, अंशुमतः Ansuman's, पुत्रः son, भगीरथः Bhagiratha, दिलीपस्य was son of Dilipa.

Valiant Anshuman was the son of Asamanja and the father of Dilipa. Dilipa's son was Bhagiratha.
भगीरथात्ककुत्स्थस्तु काकुत्स्था येन विश्रुताः।

ककुत्स्थस्य च पुत्रोऽभूद्रघुर्येन च राघवाः।।2.110.27।।


भगीरथात् from Bhagiratha, ककुत्स्थ: Kakutstha, येन by whom, काकुत्स्थाः as Kakutsthas, विश्रुताः are celebrated, ककुत्स्थस्य च to Kakutstha, रघुः Raghu, पुत्रः son, अभूत् was born, येन by whom, राघवाः Raghavas

To Bhagiratha was born Kakutstha, by whom your race is wellknown. A son Raghu was born to Kakutstha and hence all of you are known as Raghavas.
रघोस्तु पुत्रस्तेजस्वी प्रवृद्धः पुरुषादकः।

कल्माषपाद स्सौदास इत्येवं प्रथितो भुवि।।2.110.28।।


रघोः Raghu, तेजस्वी illustrious, पुत्रः son, प्रवृद्धः has grown, पुरुषादकः Purushadaka, कल्माषपादः Kalmasapada, सौदासः Sowdasa, इत्येवम् like these, भुवि in this world, प्रथितः became famous.

The illustrious son of Raghu became famous in the world under the names of Kalmasapada and Sowdasa. The curse of a sage turned him a devourer of men for
some years.
कल्माषपादपुत्रोऽभूच्छङ्खणस्त्विति विश्रुतः।

यस्तु तद्वीर्यमासाद्य सहसैन्यो व्यनीनशत्।।2.110.29।।


शङ्खणः Shankhana, इति thus, विश्रुतः is famous, कल्माषपादपुत्रः as son of Kalmashapada, अभूत् became, यः whoever, तद्वीर्यम् with that prowess, आसाद्य having been target acquired, सहसैन्यः with his army, व्यनीनशत् was destroyed.

Shankhana was the famous son of Kalmashapada. Whoever challenged his prowess was routed with his entire army.
शङ्खणस्य च पुत्रोऽभूच्छूर श्रीमान्सुदर्शनः।

सुदर्शनस्याग्निवर्णः अग्निवर्णस्य शीघ्रगः।।2.110.30।।

शीघ्रगस्य मरुः पुत्रो मरोः पुत्रः प्रशुश्रुवः।

प्रशुश्रुवस्य पुत्रोभूदम्बरीषो महाद्युतिः।।2.110.31।।

अम्बरीषस्य पुत्रोभून्नहुषः सत्यविक्रमः।

नहुषस्य च नाभागः पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः।।2.110.32।।

अजश्च सुव्रतश्चैव नाभागस्य सुतावुभौ।

अजस्यैव च धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथस्सुतः।।2.110.33।।


शङ्खणस्य to Shankhana, श्रीमान् glorious, सुदर्शनः Sudarshana, पुत्रः was his son, सुदर्शनस्य to Sudarshana, अग्निवर्णः Agnivarna, अग्निवर्णस्य to Agnivarna, शीघ्रगः Shighraga, शीघ्रगस्य to Shighraga, पुत्रः son, मरुः Maru, मरोः to Maru, पुत्रः son, प्रशुश्रुवः Prashushruva, प्रशुश्रुवस्य to Prashushruva, महाद्युतिः splendid, अम्बरीषः Ambarisha पुत्रः son, अभूत् was born, अम्बरीषस्य to Ambarisha, सत्यविक्रम: a man of real prowess, नहुषः Nahusha, पुत्रः son, अभूत् was born, नहुषस्य to Nahusha, परमधार्मिकः supremely righteous, नाभागः Nabhaga, पुत्रः son,
नाभागस्य to Nabhaga, अजश्च Aja, सुव्रतश्चैव and Suvrata, उभौ two, सुतौ sons, धर्मात्मा rigtheous, राजा दशरथः king Dasaratha, अजस्यैव to Aja, सुतः son.

The son of Shankhana was the glorious Sudarshana, father of Agnivarna. Shighraga was the son of Agnivarna whose son was Maru. Maru's son was Prashushruva and to Prashushruva was born splendid Ambarisha. Nahusha of indisputable prowess was the son of Ambarisha whose son was the supremely righteous Nabhaga. Nabhaga had two sons, Aja and Suvrata and Aja's son was the righteous king Dasaratha.
तस्य ज्येष्ठोऽसि दायादो राम इत्यभिविश्रुतः।

तद्गृहाण स्वकं राज्यमवेक्षस्व जनं नृप।।2.110.34।।


राम इति as Rama, अभिविश्रुतः known far and wide, तस्य that king's, दायादः an heir, ज्येष्ठः असि are the eldest son, नृपः O king, तत् for that reason, स्वकम् is your own, राज्यम् kingdom, गृहाण accept, जनम् the people, अवेक्षस्व look after.

Being the eldest son of king Dasaratha and widely known as Rama you happen to be the heir apparent. Hence, O king, accept the kingdom and look after the people.
इक्ष्वाकूणां हि सर्वेषां राजा भवति पूर्वजः।

पूर्वजे नापरः पुत्रो ज्येष्ठो राज्येऽभिषिच्यते।।2.110.35।।


सर्वेषाम् for every one, इक्ष्वाकूणाम् among the Ikshvakus, पूर्वजः eldest son, राजा as king, भवति becomes, पूर्वजे when the eldest is there, अपरः younger one, न not, ज्येष्ठः पुत्रः the eldest son, राज्ये in the kingdom, अभिषिच्यते is consecrated.

In the line of the Ikshvakus, only the eldest son becomes king. When the eldest is living, a youger son cannot become the king. The eldest son alone is consecrated in the kingdom.
स राघवाणां कुलधर्ममात्मनः सनातनं नाद्य विहन्तुमर्हसि।

प्रभूतरत्नामनुशाधि मेदिनीं प्रभूतराष्ट्रां पितृवन्महायशः।।2.110.36।।


महायशः O illustrious Rama, सः that you, आत्मनः your, राघवाणाम् in house of Raghus, सनातनम् eternal, कुलधर्मम् family tradition, अद्य today, विहन्तुम् to abandon, नार्हसि does not
behove you, प्रभूतरत्नाम् with abundance of treasures, प्रभूतराष्ट्राम् vast kingdom, मेदिनीम् the earth, पितृवत् like your father, अनुशाधि rule.

O illustrious Rama, now it does not behove you to abandon the ancient family tradition of the Raghus. Like your father rule this vast kingdom with abundance of treasures.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे दशोत्तरशततमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the hundredtenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
