Sloka & Translation

[Dasaratha sends Sumantra to bring Rama again-- briefs him on certain matters and sends him -- Rama visits Kausalya and informs her about the coronation and seeks her blessings.]

गतेष्वथ नृपो भूयः पौरेषु सह मन्त्रिभिः।

मन्त्रयित्वा ततश्चक्रे निश्चयज्ञस्सनिश्चयम्।।2.4.1।।

श्व एव पुष्यो भविताश्वोऽभिषेच्यस्तु मे सुतः।

रामो राजीवताम्राक्षो यौवराज्य इति प्रभुः।।2.4.2।।


अथ thereafter, पौरेषु citizens, गतेषु सत्सु had departed, निश्चयज्ञः knows how to take decisions, प्रभुः Lord, नृपः king, मन्त्रिभि: सह together with counsellors, भूयः again, मन्त्रयित्वा having consulted, श्वः एव tomorrow itself, पुष्यः Pushya star, भविता is in the ascendance, राजीवताम्राक्षः a man whose eyes resemble red lotus (petals), मे सुतः my son, रामः Rama, श्वः tomorrow, यौवराज्ये as heirapparent, अभिषेच्यः should be installed, इति thus, निश्चयम् decision, चक्रे made.

After the citizens departed, the king, an expert in decisionmaking again consulted his counsellors and said, Tomorrow Pushya star is in the ascendence and my son, Rama (handsome) with coppercoloured eyes which resemble red lotus petals will be installed heirapparent.
गतेष्वथ नृपो भूयः पौरेषु सह मन्त्रिभिः।

अथाऽन्तर्गृहमाविश्य राजा दशरथस्तदा।

सूतमामन्त्रयामास रामं पुनरिहानय।।2.4.3।।


अथ thereafter, राजा दशरथः king Dasaratha, अन्तर्गृहम् inner apartment, आविश्य having entered, तदा then, रामम् Rama, पुनः again, इह here, आनय bring him, सूतम् charioteer Sumantra, आमन्त्रयामास ordered.

Therafter king Dasaratha on retiring to his private apartment, ordered Sumantra to
bring Rama once again.
प्रतिगृह्य स तद्वाक्यं सूतः पुनरुपाययौ।

रामस्य भवनं शीघ्रं राममानयितुं पुनः।।2.4.4।।


सः सूतः the charioteer, तत् वाक्यम् that order, प्रतिगृह्य having received, पुनः again, रामम् Rama, आनयितुम् to fetch, शीघ्रम् speedily, रामस्य Rama's, भवनम् palace, उपाययौ reached.

In obedience to the command of the king charioteer Sumantra set out speedily to the palace of Rama to fetch him back once again.
द्वार्स्थैरावेदितं तस्य रामायाऽऽगमनं पुनः।

श्रुत्वैव चापि रामस्तं प्राप्तं शङ्कान्वितोऽभवत्।।2.4.5।।


पुनः again, तस्य his, आगमनम् arrival, द्वाः स्धैः by doorkeepers, रामाय to Rama, आवेदितम् was reported, तम् him, प्राप्तम् had arrived, श्रुत्वा एव on listening, रामः Rama, शङ्कान्वितः अभवत् was filled with apprehensions.

The doorkeepers informed Rama of Sumantra's arrival. As soon as he learnt that Sumantra was back again, Rama was filled with apprehensions.
प्रवेश्य चैनं त्वरितं रामो वचनमब्रवीत्।

यदागमनकृत्यं ते भूयस्तद्ब्रूह्यशेषतः।।2.4.6।।


रामः Rama, एनम् him, त्वरितम् quickly प्रवेश्य having admitted , वचनम् words अब्रवीत् said, भूयः again, ते your, आगमनकृत्यम् purpose of coming back, यत् whatever is there तत् that one, अशेषतः completely, ब्रूहि tell

Rama got Sumantra admitted and said to him, What is the purpose of your coming back so quickly ? Tell me whatever is there without holding back.
तमुवाच तत स्सूतो राजा त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छति।

श्रुत्वा प्रमाणमत्र त्वं गमनायेतराय वा।।2.4.7।।


ततः thereafter, सूतः charioteer, तम् addressing him, उवाच spoke, राजा king, त्वाम् you, द्रष्टुम् to see, इच्छति desires, श्रुत्वा having heard, अत्र in this matter, गमनाय either to go, इतराय वा or otherwise, त्वम् you alone, प्रमाणम् are the authority.

Then Sumantra replied, 'The king desires to see you. To go or not to go, the decision is yours'.
इति सूतवच श्श्रुत्वा रामोऽथ त्वरयाऽन्वितः।

प्रययौ राजभवनं पुनर्द्रष्टुं नरेश्वरम्।।2.4.8।।


इति thus, सूतवचः words of the charioteer, श्रुत्वा having heard, रामः Rama, अथ afterwards, त्वरया with haste, अन्वितः seized, नरेश्वरम् king, पुनः again, द्रष्टुम् to see, राजभवनम् to royal palace, प्रययौ departed.

On hearing the words of the charioteer, Rama immediately set out for the royal palace to see the king again.
तं श्रुत्वा समनुप्राप्तं रामं दशरथो नृपः।

प्रवेशयामास गृहं विवक्षुः प्रियमुत्तमम्।।2.4.9।।


दशरथः नृपः king Dasaratha, तम् रामम् that Rama, समनुप्राप्तम् of his arrival, श्रुत्वा having heard, उत्तमम् exceedingly, प्रियम् pleasing, विवक्षुः to tell, गृहम् palace, प्रवेशयामास got him admitted.

Having heard of Rama's arrival, king Dasaratha got him admitted into his apartment to tell him something very pleasant.
प्रविशन्नेव च श्रीमान्राघवो भवनं पितुः।

ददर्श पितरं दूरात्प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः।।2.4.10।।


श्रीमान् glorious, राघवः Rama, पितुः father's, भवनम् palace, प्रविशन्नेव while entering, कृताञ्जलिः folded hands, दूरात् from a distance, पितरम् to his father, प्रणिपत्य bending low in reverence, ददर्श beheld.

On entering his father's palace, glorious Rama, folded his hands and bent low in reverence from a distance and beheld his father.
प्रणमन्तं समुत्थाप्य तं परिष्वज्य भूमिपः।

प्रदिश्य चास्मै रुचिरमासनं पुनरब्रवीत्।।2.4.11।।


भूमिपः protector of the earth (king Dasaratha), प्रणमन्तम् as he (Rama) was bending low, तम् him, समुत्थाप्य lifted up, परिष्वज्य embracing, अस्मै him, रुचिरम् splendid, आसनम् seat, प्रदिश्य च having offered, पुनः again, अब्रवीत् said.

As he (Rama) was bending (with reverence), Dasaratha lifted him up and embraced him. Thereafter, he offered him a splendid seat and said again:
राम वृद्धोऽस्मि दीर्घायुर्भुक्ता भोगा मयेप्सिताः।

अन्नवद्भिः क्रतुशतै स्तथेष्टं भूरिदक्षिणैः।।2.4.12।।


राम O Rama, दीर्घायुः one with long life, वृद्धः अस्मि I have become old, मया by me, ईप्सिताः desires, भोगाः pleasures, भुक्ताः enjoyed, अन्नवद्भिः cooked rice, भूरिदक्षिणैः abundance of donations, क्रतुशतैः by hundreds of rituals, इष्टम् is performed.

O Rama after a long life I have grown old. I have enjoyed all the pleasures I desired. I have also performed hundreds of rituals which enjoined distribution of abundant food and gifts.
जातमिष्टमपत्यं मे त्वमद्यानुपमं भुवि।

दत्तमिष्टमधीतं च मया पुरुषसत्तम।।2.4.13।।


पुरूषसत्तम the very best of men( Rama), त्वम् you, अद्य now, भुवि on this earth, अनुपमम् incomparable, इष्टम् to my liking, अपत्यम् as progeny, मे to me, जातम् was born, मया by me, दत्तम् given (performed), इष्टम् rituals (prescribed for kshatriyas), अधीतं च studied (Vedas) also.

O best of men I have obtained now a progeny of my liking in you and you have no equal on earth. I have given gifts, performed rituals and also studied (the Vedas) .
अनुभूतानि चेष्टानि मया वीर सुखान्यपि।

देवर्षिपितृविप्राणामनृणोऽस्मि तथाऽत्मनः।।2.4.14।।


वीर O mighty one, मया by me, इष्टानि my favouite ones, सुखान्यपि pleasures, अनुभूतानि were experienced, देवर्षिपितृविप्राणाम् with regard to my obligations to gods, sages, my ancestors and brahmins, तथा and also, आत्मनः for me, अनृणः अस्मि I am freed from debt.

O mighty son I have experienced all the pleasures I longed for. I redeemed my debt to the gods, the sages, my ancestors, brahmins and to myself.
न किञ्चिन्मम कर्तव्यं तवान्यत्राभिषेचनात्।

अतो यत्त्वामहं ब्रूयां तन्मे त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि।।2.4.15।।


तव your, अभिषेचनात् अन्यत्र other than consecration, कर्तव्यम् duty, न किञ्चित् nothing, मम my, अतः for that reason, अहम् I, त्वाम् to you, यत् whatever, ब्रूयाम् I shall tell you, तत् that one, त्वम् you, मे to me, कर्तुम् to perform, अर्हसि it behoves you.

There is nothing left to be done by me except your consecration Hence you should perform what I tell you.
अद्य प्रकृतयस्सर्वास्त्वामिच्छन्ति नराधिपम्।

अतस्त्वां युवराजानमभिषेक्ष्यामि पुत्रक।।2.4.16।।


अद्य today, सर्वाः all, प्रकृतयः the subjects, त्वाम् you, नराधिपम् as king, इच्छन्ति wish, पुत्रक my dear son, अतः so, त्वाम् you, युवराजानम् as heirapparent, अभिषेक्ष्यामि I am going to install.

Today all the subjects expresed their desire to see you as their king. Therefore, my dear son, I wish to coronate you heirapparent.
अपि चाद्याऽशुभान्राम स्वप्ने पश्यामि दारुणान्।

सनिर्घाता दिवोल्का च पततीह महास्वना।।2.4.17।।


राम O Rama, अपि च also, अद्य now, स्वप्ने in a dream, दारुणान् frightening, अशुभान् inauspicious events, पश्यामि am seeing, दिवा during day time, सनिर्घाता accompanied by thunders, महास्वना generating great sounds, उल्का meteor, इह here, पतति is falling.

Moreover Rama, these days I see frightening and ominous events in dreams during day time. I see meteors accompanied by thunders falling, generating great sounds.
अवष्टब्धं च मे राम नक्षत्रं दारुणैर्ग्रहैः।

आवेदयन्ति दैवज्ञाः सूर्याङ्गारकराहुभिः।।2.4.18।।


राम O Rama, सूर्याङ्गारकराहुभिः Sun, Mars and Rahu, दारुणैः formidable, ग्रहैः planets, मे my, नक्षत्रम् birth star, अवष्टब्धम् have afflicted, दैवज्ञाः astrologers, आवेदयन्ति are communicating.

O Rama astrologers also tell me that formidable planets Sun, Mars and Rahu have afflicted my birth star.
प्रायेण हि निमित्तानामीदृशानां समुद्भवे।

राजा हि मृत्युमाप्नोति घोरां वाऽऽपदमृच्छति।।2.4.19।।


ईदृशानाम् when such, निमित्तानाम् of ominous signs, समुद्भवे appear, प्रायेण हि usually, राजा king, मृत्युम् death, आप्नोति meets, घोराम् grave, आपदं वा or calamity, ऋच्छति faces.

When such ominous signs appear, usually the king either meets with death or faces a grave calamity.
तद्यावदेव मे चेतो न विमुह्यति राघव।

तावदेवाभिषिञ्चस्व चला हि प्राणिनां मतिः।।2.4.20।।


तत् so, राघव son of the Raghus (Rama), मे my, चेतः mind, यावदेव so long as, न विमु३ह्यति is not deluded, तावदेव till then, अभिषिञ्चस्व be consecrated, प्राणिनाम् men's, मतिः mind, चला हि is unstable indeed.

Therefore, before my mind is deluded I wish to see you installed as heirapparent for a man's mind is unstable indeed, O Rama.
अद्य चन्द्रोऽभ्युपगतः पुष्यात्पूर्वं पुनर्वसू।

श्वः पुष्ययोगं नियतं वक्ष्यन्ते दैवचिन्तकाः।।2.4.21।।


अद्य today, चन्द्रः Moon, पुष्यात् than star Pushya, पूर्वम् preceding, पुनर्वसू constellation Punarvasu, अभ्युपगतः entered, श्वः tomorrow, पुष्ययोगम् in conjuction with Pushya constellation, नियतम् certainly, दैवचिन्तकाः astrologers, वक्ष्यन्ते say

Today the Moon is in conjunction with the Punarvasu constellation. Tomorrow the Moon's conjunction with the Pushya constellation is certain and the astrologers say this auspicious time is highly suitable for the purpose of coronation.
ततः पुष्येऽभिषिञ्चस्व मनस्त्वरयतीव माम्।

श्वस्त्वाऽहमभिषेक्ष्यामि यौवराज्ये परन्तप।।2.4.22।।
 

ततः therefore, पुष्ये in the Pushya constellation, अभिषिञ्चस्व be coronated , मनः my mind, माम् me, त्वरयतीव looks hastening up, परन्तप O slayer of enemies, अहम् I, श्वः tomorrow, त्वाम् you, यौवराज्ये as heirapparent, अभिषेक्ष्यामि I shall install.

My mind is hastening me saying, 'Coronate Rama in the Pushya constellation itself'. O Slayer of enemies, I shall install you heir apparent tomorrow.
तस्मात्त्वयाऽद्य प्रभृति निशेयं नियतात्मना।

सह वध्वोपवस्तव्या दर्भप्रस्तरशायिना।।2.4.23।।


तस्मात् therefore, अद्यप्रभृति from now, इयम् this, निशा night, नियतात्मना with selfrestraint, दर्भप्रस्तरशायिना sleeping on a bed of darbha or kusha grass, त्वया by you, वध्वा सह with daughterinlaw, Sita, उपवस्तव्या should be spent by undertaking fasting.

Therefore, you and my daughterinlaw (Sita) should fast tonight and sleep on a bed of darbha or kusha grass with selfrestraint.
सुहृदश्चाप्रमत्तास्त्वां रक्षन्त्वद्य समन्ततः।

भवन्ति बहु विघ्नानि कार्याण्येवंविधानि हि।।2.4.24।।


अद्य today, सुहृदश्च your friends also, समन्ततः on all sides, अप्रमत्ताः vigilantly, त्वाम् you, रक्षन्तु protect, एवं विधानि of this sort, कार्याणि acts, बहुविघ्नानि many impediments, भवन्ति हि will happen, indeed.

Many impediments befall acts of this sort indeed. Alert your friends to protect you from all sides today onwards.
विप्रोषितश्च भरतो यावदेव पुरादितः।

तावदेवाभिषेकस्ते प्राप्तकालो मतो मम।।2.4.25।।


भरतः Bharata, इतः पुरात् from this city, यावदेव while, विप्रोषितः away from, तावदेव till that time, ते to you, अभिषेकः consecration, प्राप्तकालः favourable time, मम(मे) my, मतः opinion.

While Bharata is away from the city, the time is favourable for your installation. This is my opinion.
कामं खलु सतां वृत्ते भ्राता ते भरतस्स्थितः।

ज्येष्ठानुवर्ती धर्मात्मा सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः।।2.4.26।।


ते your, भ्राता brother, भरतः Bharata, कामम् really, सतां वृत्ते on the path of the virtuous, स्थितः stayed, ज्येष्ठानुवर्ती follows his elder brother, धर्मात्मा righteous, सानुक्रोशः compassionate, जितेन्द्रियः has controlled his senses.

It is true, your brother Bharata has adhered to the path of the virtuous and has followed his elder brother. No doubt, he is righteous, compassionate and self controlled.
किन्तु चित्तं मनुष्याणामनित्यमिति मे मतिः।

सतां च धर्मनित्यानां कृतशोभि च राघव।।2.4.27।।


किन्तु yet, धर्मनित्यानाम् those fixed in righteousness, सतां च virtuous people also, मनुष्याणाम् men's, कृतशोभि made propitious, चित्तम् mind, अनित्यम् इति is fickle, मे my, मतिः my opinion.

Yet I think even the propitious minds of those who are virtuous and whose thoughts are fixed in righteousness can also become fickle.
इत्युक्त स्सोऽभ्यनुज्ञात श्श्वोभाविन्यभिषेचने।

व्रजेति रामः पितरमभिवाद्याभ्ययाद्गृहम्।।2.4.28।।


श्वः tomorrow, भाविनि that will take place, अभिषेचने about installation ceremony, इति thus, उक्तः spoken of, सः that, रामः Rama, व्रज इति 'you may go', अभ्यनुज्ञातः having been permitted, पितरम् father, अभिवाद्य having paid obeisance, गृहम् to his abode, अभ्ययात् returned.

Having spoken to Rama about the installation ceremony fixed for the next day, he (Dasaratha) permitted him to leave saying, 'You may go'. Rama paid obeisance to his father and returned to his abode.
प्रविश्य चात्मनो वेश्मराज्ञोद्दिष्टेऽभिषेचने।

तत्क्षणेन विनिर्गम्य मातुरन्तपुरं ययौ।।2.4.29।।


राज्ञा by the king, अभिषेचने with regard to installation, उद्दिष्टे when it was fixed, आत्मनः his own, वेश्म house, प्रविश्य entered in, तत्क्षणेन immediately, विनिर्गम्य having left, मातुः mother's, अन्तःपुरम् inner apartment, ययौ departed.

With the installation fixed by the king, Rama went into his residence but left immediately to see his mother in her inner apartment.
तत्र तां प्रवणामेव मातरं क्षौमवासिनीम्।

वाग्यतां देवतागारे ददर्शाऽऽयाचतीं श्रियम्।।2.4.30।।


तत्र there, देवतागारे in the room (meant for worship) of the gods, प्रवणामेव engrossed in devotion, क्षौमवासिनीम् wearing silk apparels, वाग्यताम् silently, श्रियम् for royal fortune, आयाचतीम् praying, ताम् मातरम् that mother, ददर्श beheld.

There he beheld his mother in silk apparel engrossed in silent prayer (to the gods) for his royal fortune in the room meant for the worship of the gods.
प्रागेव चागता तत्र सुमित्रा लक्ष्मण स्तथा।

सीता चानायिता श्रुत्वा प्रियं रामाभिषेचनम्।।2.4.31।।


प्रियम् welcome tidings, रामाभिषेचनम् of installation of Rama, श्रुत्वा having heard, प्रागेव preceding him (Rama), तथा also, सुमित्रा Sumitra, आगता had arrived, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, सीता च also Sita, आनायिता had been summoned.

Hearing the welcome tidings of the installation of her beloved Rama, Sita too, had been brought in. Sumitra and Lakshmana had already arrived there.
तस्मिन् काले हि कौशल्या तस्थावामीलितेक्षणा।

सुमित्रयाऽन्वास्यमाना सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च।।2.4.32।।


तस्मिन् काले at that moment, कौशल्या Kausalya, सुमित्रया by Sumitra, सीतया by Sita, लक्ष्मणेन च by Lakshmana, अन्वास्यमाना being accompanied, आमीलितेक्षणा with halfclosed eyes, तस्थौ stood.

At that moment Kausalya was meditating with her eyes halfclosed. Sumitra, Lakshmana and Sita were attending on her.
श्रुत्वा पुष्येण पुत्रस्य यौवराज्याऽभिषेचनम्।

प्राणायामेन पुरुषं ध्यायमाना जनार्दनम्।।2.4.33।।


पुष्येण In Pushya constellation, पुत्रस्य son's, यौवराज्याभिषेचनम् installation as heirapparent, श्रुत्वा having heard, प्राणायामेन by controlling the breath, पुरुषम् supreme god, जनार्दनम् Lord Visnu, ध्यायमाना meditating upon.

Having heard that installation of her son as heirapparent was planned in Pushya constellation, Kausalya was meditating upon the Supreme Person, Lord Visnu by controlling her breath (Pranayama).
तथा सनियमामेव सोऽभिगम्याभिवाद्य च।

उवाच वचनं रामो हर्षयंस्तामनिन्दिताम्।।2.4.34।।


सः रामः that Rama, तथा in that manner, सनियमामेव engaged in prayer, अभिगम्य having approached, अभिवाद्य च having made reverential salutation, ताम् her, हर्षयन् enhancing her joy, अनिन्दितां वचनम् words of praise, उवाच said.

While she (Kausalya) was in that state of meditation, Rama approached her, offered reverential salutation and said these words of praise enhancing her joy:
अम्ब पित्रा नियुक्तोऽस्मि प्रजापालनकर्मणि।

भविता श्वोऽभिषेको मे यथा मे शासनं पितुः।।2.4.35।।


अम्ब O mother, पित्रा by father, प्रजापालनकर्मणि in the act of governing the people, नियुक्तः अस्मि I have been assigned, मे my, पितुः father's, शासनम् command, यथा as mentioned, श्वः tomorrow, मे my, अभिषेकः installation, भविता will take place.

O mother father has assigned me the duties of governing the subjects. My installation takes place tomorrow on my father's command.
सीतयाप्युपवस्तव्या रजनीयं मया सह।

एवमृत्विगुपाध्यायै स्सह मामुक्तवान्पिता।।2.4.36।।


इयम् this, रजनी night, सीतयापि Sita also, मया सह along with me, उपवस्तव्या will fast, एवम् thus, ऋत्विगुपाध्यायैः सह with officiating priests and spiritual preceptors, पिता father, माम् addressing me, उक्तवान् has said.

Tonight, Sita, the officiating priests and preceptors will take to fasting along with me. This is what father told me.
यानि यान्यत्र योग्यानि श्वोभाविन्यभिषेचने।

तानि मे मङ्गलान्यद्य वैदेह्याश्चैव कारय।।2.4.37।।


श्वः tomorrow, भाविनि that will take place in future, अभिषेचने in installation ceremony, यानि यानि whatever, मङ्गलानि auspicious rites, योग्यानि appropriate, तानि them, अद्य today, मे to me, वैदेह्याः चैव and also to Vaidehi (Sita), कारय perform.

The installation takes place tomorrow. Perform today whatever auspicious rituals are appropriate (to the occasion) for me and Vaidehi (Sita).
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौशल्या चिरकालाभिकाङ्क्षितम्।

हर्षबाष्पकलं वाक्यमिदं राममभाषत।।2.4.38।।


कौशल्या तु Kausalya, चिरकालाभिकाङ्क्षितम् long cherished, एतत् this (tiding relating to installation), श्रुत्वा having heard, हर्षबाष्पकलम् in sweet but indistinct words due to tears of joy, इदम् these, वाक्यम् words, रामम् addressing Rama, अभाषत spoke.

Hearing this long cherished tiding (relating to installation) Kausalya spoke to Rama in sweet but indistinct words due to tears of joy.
वत्स राम चिरं जीव हतास्ते परिपन्थिनः।

ज्ञातीन्मे त्वं श्रिया युक्त स्सुमित्रायाश्च नन्दय।।2.4.39।।


वत्स O child राम O Rama, चिरं for a long time, जीव live, ते your, परिपन्थिनः enemies, हताः are destroyed, त्वम् you, श्रिया युक्तः endowed with prosperity, मे my, ज्ञातीन् relatives, सुमित्रायाः च and those of Sumitra, नन्दय bring delight.

O my dear child, O Rama, may you live long Let your enemies be destroyed. Endowed with prosperity, bring delight to my relatives and those of Sumitra.
कल्याणे बत नक्षत्रे मयि जातोऽसि पुत्रक।

येन त्वया दशरथो गुणैराराधितः पिता।।2.4.40।।


पुत्रक O my son येन by whom, त्वया by you, पिता father, दशरथः Dasaratha, गुणैः with virtues, आराधितः caused delight, कल्याणे under a lucky, नक्षत्रे star, मयि in me, जातः असि you were born, बत Oh what a joy

O Rama, my little child you were born to me under a lucky star. On this account you have delighted your father Dasaratha with your virtues. What a joy
अमोघं बत मे क्षान्तं पुरुषे पुष्करेक्षणे।

येयमिक्ष्वाकुराज्यश्रीः पुत्र त्वां संश्रयिष्यति।।2.4.41।।
 

पुष्करेक्षणे in the lotuseyed, पुरुषे in Visnu, मे my, क्षान्तम् enduring the pain (of observance of vows and fasting), अमोघम् are not in vain, बत what a joy, पुत्र son, या इयम् such, इक्ष्वाकुराज्यश्रीः the royal fortune of Ikshvakus, त्वाम् you, संश्रयिष्यति will take refuge in you.

O my son my devotion to the lotuseyed Visnu, enduring the pain (of observance of vows and fasting) have not gone in vain.The royal fortune of the Ikshvakus will pass on to you. What a joy
इत्येवमुक्तो मात्रेदं रामो भ्रातरमब्रवीत्।

प्राञ्जलिं प्रह्वमासीनमभिवीक्ष्य स्मयन्निव।।2.4.42।।


मात्रा by mother, इत्येवम् in this way, उक्तः spoken, रामः Rama, प्रह्वम् in humble manner, प्राञ्जलिम् with folded palms, आसीनम् sitting, भ्रातरम् brother, Lakshmana, अभिवीक्ष्य having looked at, स्मयन्निव as if smiling, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Thus spoken to by his mother, Rama looked at his brother Lakshmana sitting humbly with folded palms and with a smile said to him:
लक्ष्मणेमां मया सार्धं प्रशाधि त्वं वसुन्धराम्।

द्वितीयं मेऽन्तरात्मानं त्वामियं श्रीरुपस्थिता।।2.4.43।।


लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, मया सार्थम् along with me, त्वम् you, इमाम् this, वसुन्धराम् earth, प्रशाधि rule, मे my, द्वितीयम् second, अन्तरात्मानम् the innermost self, त्वाम् you, इयम् श्रीः this royal fortune, उपस्थिता reached.

O Lakshmana rule this earth together with me. This royal fortune also accrues to you, for you are my second innermost self.
सौमित्रे भुङ्क्ष्व भोगांत्स्वमिष्टान्राज्यफलानि च।

जीवितं च हि राज्यं च त्वदर्थमभिकामये।।2.4.44।।


सौमित्रे O son of Sumitra, त्वम् you, इष्टान् desirable, भोगान् pleasures, राज्यफलानि च fruits of royalty, भुङ्क्ष्व you may enjoy, जीवितं च life also, राज्यं च as well as kingdom, त्वदर्थम् for your sake, अभिकामये हि I am desiring.

O, son of Sumitra, enjoy all pleasures you wish and the fruits of royalty. I desire this life and kingdom for your sake only.
इत्युक्त्वा लक्ष्मणं रामो मातरावभिवाद्य च।

अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य सीतां च जगाम स्वं निवेशनम्।।2.4.45।।


रामः Rama, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, मातरौ to the two mothers, अभिवाद्य च having made reverential salutation, सीतां च Sita also, अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य having made her take leave of them, स्वम् his own, निवेशनम् abode, जगाम went.

After speaking to Lakshmana, Rama made reverential salutation to the two mothers and on obtaining their consent to leave with Sita, returned to his abode.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे चतुर्थस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
