[Rama reaches Srngiberapura on the bank of the Ganga--Guha, chief of the nishadas welcomes Rama.]

विशालान् कोसलान् रम्यान् यात्वा लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः।

अयोध्याभिमुखो धीमान् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।2.50.1।।


लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः Lakshmana's elder brother, धीमान् sagacious, रम्यान् beautiful, विशालान् vast, कोसलान् kingdom of Kosala, यात्वा gone beyond, अयोध्याभिमुखः facing Ayodhya, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hands, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Having crossed the vast, beautiful kingdom of Kosala, the sagacious elder brother of Lakshmana stood facing Ayodhya with folded palms and said:
आपृच्छे त्वां पुरीश्रेष्ठे काकुत्स्थपरिपालिते।

दैवतानि च यानि त्वां पालयन्ति वसन्ति च।।2.50.2।।


काकुत्स्थपरिपालिते a city ruled by the Kakutsthas, पुरीश्रेष्ठे best among cities, त्वाम् you, यानि दैवतानि all those gods, वसन्ति inhabiting, पालयन्ति च are guarding you also, आपृच्छे I am taking leave.

O Ayodhya, the best of cities ruled by those born in the Kakutstha race I take leave of you and of all those gods inhabiting and guarding you.
निवृत्तवनवासस्त्वामनृणो जगतीपतेः।

पुनर्द्रक्ष्यामि मात्रा च पित्रा च सह सङ्गतः।।2.50.3।।


जगतीपतेः lord of the world (king Dasaratha), अनृणः free from debt, निवृत्तवनवासः having completed forest life, मात्रा च with mother, पित्रा च with father, सङ्गतः reunited, त्वाम् you, पुनः again, द्रक्ष्यामि will see.

On completion of exile and my filial obligations to king Dasaratha, lord of the world, discharged, I shall, reunited with my parents, see you again.
ततो रुधिरताम्राक्षो भुजमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम्।

अश्रुपूर्णमुखो दीनोऽब्रवीज्जानपदं जनम्।।2.50.4।।


ततः then, अश्रुपूर्णमुखः face filled with tears, रुधिरताम्राक्षः eyes copperred, दीनः dejected, दक्षिणम् right, भुजम् arm, उद्यम्य having raised, जानपदम् pertaining to villages, जनम् people, अब्रवीत् said.

He looked miserable, his copperred eyes filled with tears. He raised his right hand
and said to the villagers who had come to see him:
अनुक्रोशो दया चैव यथार्हं मयि वः कृतः।

चिरं दुःखस्य पापीयो गम्यतामर्थसिद्धये।।2.50.5।।


मयि in me, यथार्हम् appropriately, वः to you, दया चैव kindness, अनुक्रोशः compassion, कृतः has been done, दुःखस्य of suffering, चिरम् for long, पापीयः is sinful, अर्थसिद्धये to discharge your duties, गम्यताम् go.

You have aptly shown your kindness and compassion to me. It is not proper to prolong one's grief. So do go and altend to your duties.
तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्।

विलपन्तो नरा घोरं व्यतिष्ठन्त क्वचित् क्वचित्।।2.50.6।।


ते नराः those people, महात्मानम् highsouled, अभिवाद्य having paid respect, प्रदक्षिणं चापि circumambulation, कृत्वा having made, घोरम् frightfully, विलपन्तः lamenting, क्वचित् क्वचित् hither and thither, व्यतिष्ठन्त stood (looking at him).

All of them paid their homage by circumambulating the highsouled Rama. Crying
bitterly, they stood here and there.
तथा विलपतां तेषामतृप्तानां च राघवः।

अचक्षुर्विषयं प्रायाद्यथार्कः क्षणदामुखे।।2.50.7।।


अतृप्तानाम् not satisfied, तेषाम् them, तथा in that manner, विलपताम् lamenting, राघवः Rama, क्षणदामुखे at nightfall, अर्कः the Sun, यथा like that, अचक्षुर्विषयम् out of sight, प्रायात् went.

Not yet satisfied (they wanted to linger longer), they stood weeping, while Rama went out of sight just as the Sun disappears at nightfall.
ततो धान्यधनोपेतान् दानशीलजनान् शिवान्।

अकुतश्चिद्भयान् रम्यांश्चैत्ययूपसमावृतान्।।2.50.8।।

उद्यानाम्रवनोपेतान् सम्पन्नसलिलाशयान्।

तुष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णान् गोकुलाकुलसेवितान्।।2.50.9।।

लक्षणीयान्नरेन्द्राणां ब्रह्मघोषाभिनादितान्।

रथेन पुरुषव्याघ्रः कोसलानत्यवर्तत।।2.50.10।।


ततः then, पुरुषव्याघ्रः tiger (best) among men (Rama), धान्यधनोपेतान् rich in wealth and foodgrain, दानशीलजनान् with charitable people, शिवान् auspicious, अकुतश्चिद्भयान् free from fear, रम्यान् charming, चैत्ययूपसमावृतान् surrounded by sacrificial altars and posts, उद्यानाम्रवनोपेतान् filled with pleasure gardens and mango groves, सम्पन्नसलिलाशयान् tanks filled with water, तुष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णान् full of contented and wellnourished people, गोकुलाकुलसेवितान् with herds of cattle, नरेन्द्राणाम् for kings, लक्षणीयान् fit to be seen, ब्रह्मघोषाभिनादितान् echoed with the sounds of Vedic recitations, कोसलान् Kosala kingdom, रथेन by the chariot, अत्यवर्तत crossed over.

Rama, the best of men, crossed the auspicious land of Kosala which was worth seeing by kings. It looked charming with sacrificial posts and altars, pleasure gardens and mango groves and tanks filled with water. It was rich with herds of
cattle, wealth and foodgrains. It was inhabited by charitable, contented and wellnourished people free from fear from any quarter. And it reverberated with the sounds of Vedic recitations.
मध्येनमुदितं स्फीतं रम्योद्यानसमाकुलम्।

राज्यं भोग्यं नरेन्द्राणां ययौ धृतिमतां वरः।।2.50.11।।


धृतिमताम् among those endowed with fortitude, वरः best, मुदितम् pleased, स्फीतम् prosperous, रम्योद्यानसमाकुलम् full of ravishing gardens, नरेन्द्राणाम् of kings, भोग्यम् fit to be enjoyed, राज्यम् of that kingdom, मध्येन in its middle, ययौ went.

Rama, the greatest among those endowed with fortitude, travelled through the
middle of the kingdom which was pleasing, prosperous and full of ravishing gardens fit to be enjoyed by kings.
तत स्त्रिपथगां दिव्यां शिवतोयामशैवलाम्।

ददर्श राघवो गङ्गां पुण्यामृषिनिषेविताम्।।2.50.12।।


तत्र there, राघवः Rama, त्रिपथगाम् flowing in three worlds, रम्याम् beautiful, शिवतोयाम् sacred waters, आशैवलाम् free from moss, पुण्याम् holy, ऋषिसेविताम् worshipped by sages, गङ्गाम् Ganga, ददर्श saw.

There Rama saw the holy Ganga flowing in three (worlds) with her sacred waters, free from moss, and worshipped by sages.
आश्रमैरविदूरस्थैः श्रीमद्भिस्समलङ्कृताम्।

कालेऽप्सरोभिर्हृष्टाभि स्सेविताम्भोह्रदां शिवाम्।।2.50.13।।


अविदूरस्थैः by those situated not far away, श्रीमद्भिः by the graceful, आश्रमैः by hermitages, समलङ्कृताम् adorned with, काले at times, हृष्टाभिः delightful, अप्सरोभिः by nymphs, सेविताम्भोह्रदाम् sport in her lakes, शिवाम् auspicious (Ganga).

The holy Ganga, adorned with graceful hermitages situated not far away is visited at times by delightful nymphs who sport in her lakes.
देवदानवगन्धर्वैः किन्नरैरुपशोभिताम्।

नानागन्धर्वपत्नीभि स्सेवितां सततं शिवाम्।।2.50.14।।


देवदानवगन्धर्वैः by devatas, danavas, and gandharvas, किन्नरैः by kinneras, उपशोभिताम् looking splendid, नानागन्धर्वपत्नीभिः by wives of several gandharvas, सततम् always, सेविताम्, inhabited, शिवाम् auspicious(Ganga).

The Ganga is graced by devatas, danavas, gandharvas and kinneras. Wives of several gandharvas always visit this auspicious river.
देवाऽऽक्रीडशताकीर्णां देवोद्यानशतायुताम्।

देवार्थमाकाशगमां विख्यातां देवपद्मिनीम्।।2.50.15।।


देवाऽऽक्रीडशताकीर्णां filled with hundreds of hills serving as sporting places for devatas देवोद्यानशतायुताम् hundreds of pleasuregardens for devatas, देवार्थम् for the sake of devatas, आकाशगमाम् flowing through heaven, देवपद्मिनीम् as Devapadmini, where celestial lotuses grow, विख्याताम् is wellknown.

Since this river flows through heavens for the gods, it is wellknown as 'Devapadmini' where celestial lotuses grow. The river embraces hundreds of hills serving as sporting places and pleasuregardens for gods.
जलाघाताट्टहासोग्रां फेननिर्मलहासिनीम्।

क्वचिद्वेणीकृतजलां क्वचिदावर्तशोभिताम्।।2.50.16।।


जलाघाताट्टहासोग्राम् ferocious with the sound of dashing waters resembling loud laughter, फेननिर्मलहासिनीम् with the sparkling smile of foam, क्वचित् at some places, वेणीकृतजलाम् with waters flowing straight like a maiden's braid, क्वचित् at some places, आवर्तशोभिताम् shining with whirlpools.

The sound of dashing waters of the Ganga is like her laughter and the foam like her sparkling smile. Here she flows straight like the braid of a maiden and there in whirlpools.
क्वचित् स्तिमितगम्भीरां क्वचिद्वेगजलाकुलाम्।

क्वचिद्गम्भीरनिर्घोषां क्वचिद्भैरवनिस्वनाम्।।2.50.17।।


क्वचित् at places, स्तिमितगम्भीराम् was deep and quiet, क्वचित् at places, वेगजलाकुलाम् perturbed due to fastflowing waters, क्वचित् at places, गम्भीरनिर्घोषाम् making majestic sound, क्वचित् at some place, भैरवनिस्वनाम् makes dreadful sounds.

Here the Ganga runs deep but quiet, there she looks perturbed due to fastflowing waters, here she flows with a deep groan and there with a dreadful roar.
देवसङ्घाप्लुतजलां निर्मलोत्पलशोभिताम्।

क्वचिदाभोगपुलिनां क्वचिन्निर्मलवालुकाम्।।2.50.18।।


देवसङ्घाप्लुतजलाम् in the waters of which hosts of celestials take ablutions, निर्मलोत्पलशोभिताम् decked with pure blue lilies, क्वचित् at some places, अभोगपुलिनाम् with curved banks, क्वचित् at some places, निर्मलवालुकाम् white sands.

Here hosts of celestials take their ablutions and there she shines with lilies of pure blue. Here her banks are curved and there her bed is dotted with patches of white sand.
हंससारससङ्घुष्टां चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम्।

सदा मदैश्च विहगैरभिसन्नादितान्तराम्।।2.50.19।।


हंससारससङ्घुष्टाम् reverberating with cries of swans and cranes, चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम् filled with cries of chakravakas (ruddy geese), सदामदैः विहगैः always filled with passionate birds, अभिसन्नादितान्तराम् filled with sounds at intervals.

The river reverberates with the cries of swans, cranes and chakravakas (ruddy goose). It rings intermittently with the chirpings of birds charged with endless pasison.
क्वचित्तीररुहैर्वृक्षैर्मालाभिरिवशोभिताम्।

क्वचित्फुल्लोत्पलच्छन्नां क्वचित्पद्मवनाकुलाम्।।2.50.20।।


क्वचित् at some places,तीररुहैः grown on the banks,वृक्षैः with trees, मालाभिरिव like garlands,शोभिताम् decorated, क्वचित् at some places, फुल्लोत्पलच्छन्नाम् covered with fulblown waterlilies, क्वचित् at some places, पद्मवनाकुलाम् spread with multitudes of lotuses.

Here on her banks stand trees adorned as though with garlands, and there in her waters abound fullblown lilies and a forest of lotuses.
क्वचित्कुमुदषण्डैश्च कुड्मलैरुपशोभिताम्।

नानापुष्परजोध्वस्तां समदामिव च क्वचित्।।2.50.21।।


क्वचित् at some places, कुमुदषण्डैश्च with hosts of waterlilies, कुड्मलैः halfblown flowers, उपशोभिताम् adorned, नानापुष्परजोध्वस्ताम् pollen from different kinds of flowers, क्वचित् in some places, समदाम् इव as if intoxicated with passion.

Here she is decked with hosts of waterlilies and halfblown flowers while elsewhere she looks intoxicated with the pollen fallen from various flowers.
व्यपेतमलसङ्घातां मणिनिर्मलदर्शनाम्।

दिशागजैर्वनगजै र्मत्तैश्च वरवारणैः।।2.50.22।।

देवोपवाह्यैश्च मुहुस्सन्नादितवनान्तराम्।


व्यपेतमलसङ्घाताम् cleansed of heaps of impurities, मणिनिर्मलदर्शनाम् appearing like a
transparent gem, दिशागजैः by the elephants gaurding the quarters, मत्तैश्च by intoxicated ones, वनगजैः wild elephants, देवोपवाहैः by those suitable for carrying gods, वरवारणैः with excellent elephants, मुहुः repeatedly, सन्नादितवनान्तराम् resounding in the interiors of the forest.

The river, cleansed of heaps of impurities, appears like a transparent gem. The interiors of forests on her banks always resounds with the trumpeting of mighty, intoxicated, wild elephants guarding the quarters, fit to be the vehicles of gods.
प्रमदामिव यत्नेन भूषितां भूषणोत्तमैः।।2.50.23।।

फलैः पुष्पैः किसलयैर्वृतां गुल्मैर्द्विजैस्तथा।

शिंशुमारैश्च नक्रैश्च भुजङ्गैश्च निषेविताम्।।2.50.24।।


फलैः with fruits, पुष्पैः with flowers, किसलयैः with tender leaves or shoots, गुल्मैः with shrubs, तथा similarly, द्विजैः with birds, वृताम् encompassed, भूषणोत्तमैः with excellent ornaments, यत्नेन carefully, भूषिताम् decorated, प्रमदामिव like a woman, शिंशुमारैश्च small whales, नक्रैश्च with crocodiles, भुजङ्गैश्च with serpents, निषेविताम् is served.

Just like a lady, Ganga is decorated with the best of ornaments her banks are filled with fruits, flowers, tender leaves or shoots and (flowering) shrubs. It is inhabited by birds and brahmins and infested with sisumaras (small whales), crocodiles and serpents.
विष्णुपादच्युतां दिव्यामपापां पापनाशिनीम्।

तां शङ्करजटाजूटाद्भ्रष्टां सागरतेजसा।।2.50.25।।

समुद्रमहिषीं गङ्गां सारसक्रौञ्चनादिताम्।

आससाद महाबाहुः शृङ्गिबेरपुरं प्रति।।2.50.26।।


महाबाहुः mightyarmed, विष्णुपादच्युताम् dropped from the feet of lord Visnu, दिव्याम् divine, अपापाम् sinless, पापनाशिनीम् destroyer of sins, सागरतेजसा due to the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha), शङ्कर जटाजूटात् from the matted hair of lord Siva, भ्रष्टाम्
dropped, समुद्रमहिषीम् consort of the Ocean, सारसक्रौञ्चनादिताम् echoed with the cries of kraunchas and herons, तां गङ्गाम् that Ganga, शृङ्गिबेरपुरं प्रति towards Srngiberapura, आससाद reached.

Mightyarmed Rama reached Srngaberapura on the bank of this consort of the ocean, this Ganga loud with the cries of kraunchas and herons. This sinless, divine Ganga, destroyer of sins who flows from the feet of lord Visnu and by the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha) emerged from the matted locks of lord Siva.
तामूर्मिकलिलावर्तामन्ववेक्ष्य महारथः।

सुमन्त्रमब्रवीत्सूतमिहैवाद्य वसामहे।।2.50.27।।


महारथः great chariotwarrior, ऊर्मिकलिलावर्ताम् river full of tumultuous waves with whirlpools, ताम् that, अन्ववेक्ष्य on beholding, सूतम् charioteer, सुमन्त्रम् Sumantra, अब्रवीत् said, अद्य today, अत्रैव here itself, वसामहे will spend.

Beholding river Ganga full of waves and whirlpools, the great chariotwarrior (Rama) said to Sumantra: We shall spend the night here.
अविदूरादयं नद्या बहुपुष्पप्रवालवान्।

सुमहानिङ्गुदीवृक्षो वसामोऽत्रैव सारथे।।2.50.28।।


सारथे O charioteer, नद्याः river's, अविदूरात् not far from, बहुपुष्पप्रवालवान् having many flowers and budding leaves, सुमहान् very large, अयम् this, इङ्गुदीवृक्षः Ingudi tree, अत्रैव here itself, वसामः shall stay.

O charioteer there is a very large ingudi (almond) tree not far from the river, luxuriant with flowers and budding leaves. We shall stay there tonight.
द्रक्ष्याम स्सरितां श्रेष्ठां सम्मान्यसलिलां शिवाम्।

देवदानवगन्धर्वमृगमानुषपक्षिणाम्।।2.50.29।।


देवदानवगन्धर्वमृगमानुषपक्षिणाम् for devas, danavas, gandharvas, beasts, serpents, men and birds, शिवाम् auspicious one, सम्मान्यसलिलाम् a river of venerable (holy) waters, सरितां श्रेष्ठाम् best among rivers, द्रक्ष्यामः we shall see.

We shall watch Ganga, the best among rivers, whose holy waters are respected by gods, demons, gandharvas, beasts, serpents, men and birds alike.
लक्ष्मणश्च सुमन्त्रश्च बाढमित्येव राघवम्।

उक्त्वा तमिङ्गुदीवृक्षं तदोपययतुर्हयैः।।2.50.30।।


लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana, सुमन्त्रश्च Sumantra, राघवम् Rama, बाढमित्येव 'Be it so', उक्त्वा saying, तदा then, हयैः with horses, तम् that, इङ्गुदीवृक्षम् ingudi tree, उपययतुः both
approached.

Lakshmana and Sumantra agreed with Rama, saying 'Be it so' and turned the horses towards that ingudi tree.
रामोऽभियाय तं रम्यं वृक्षमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः।

रथादवातरत्तस्मात्सभार्य स्सहलक्ष्मणः।।2.50.31।।


इक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः the delight of the Ikshvakus, रामः Rama, रम्यम् beautiful, तं वृक्षम् that tree, अभियाय having reached, सभार्यः with his consort, सहलक्ष्मणः with Lakshmana, तस्मात् from that, रथात् chariot, अवातरत् alighted.

Rama, delight of the Ikshvakus, along with his consort and Lakshmana reached that beautiful tree and alighted from the chariot.
सुमन्त्रोऽप्यवतीर्यास्मान्मोचयित्वा हयोत्तमान्।

वृक्षमूलगतं राममुपतस्थे कृताञ्जलिः।।2.50.32।।


सुमन्त्रोऽपि Sumantra also, अस्मात् from that chariot, अवतीर्य having alighted, हयोत्तमान् the best of horses, मोचयित्वा having unyoked, कृताञ्जलिः with folded palms, वृक्षमूलगतम् sitting
at the foot of the tree, रामम् Rama, उपतस्थे stood near.

Sumantra also got off the chariot, unyoked the horses and with folded palms stood near Rama who had already reached the foot of the tree.
तत्र राजा गुहो नाम रामस्यात्मसमस्सखा।

निषादजात्यो बलवान् स्थपतिश्चेति विश्रुतः।।2.50.33।।


तत्र there, रामस्य to Rama, आत्मसमः like his own self, सखा friend, निषादजात्यः hunter by race, बलवान् powerful, स्थपतिश्चेति lord of nishada tribe, विश्रुतः wellknown, गुहो नाम Guha by name, राजा king.

There lived the mighty king Guha who was born in the race of nishadas (hunters) and became famous as their lord. He was a friend to Rama who was like his own self.
स शृत्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रं रामं विषयमागतम्।

वृद्धैः परिवृतोऽमात्यैः ज्ञातिभिश्चाभ्युपागतः।।2.50.34।।


सः he, पुरुषव्याघ्रम् (best) among men, रामम् Rama, विषयम् to his region, आगतम् having arrived, शृत्वा having heard, वृध्दै: by the aged, अमात्यैः by the ministers, ज्ञातिभिश्च by the people of his clan, परिवृतः surrounded by, अभ्युपागतः approached him.

Having come to know that Rama, the best among men, had arrived in his region Guha accompanied by senior ministers and people of his clan came to greet him.
ततो निषादाधिपतिं दृष्ट्वा दूरादुपस्थितम्।

सह सौमित्रिणा राम स्समागच्छद्गुहेन सः।।2.50.35।।


ततः then, उपस्थितम् approaching, निषादाधिपतिं king of the nishadas, दूरात् from a distance, दृष्ट्वा having seen, सौमित्रिणा सह along with Lakshmana, सः रामः that Rama, गुहेन with Guha, समागच्छत् went forward.

When Rama and Lakshmana saw from a distance that Guha, king of the nishadas, was approaching them, they went forward to receive him.
तमार्तस्सम्परिष्वज्य गुहो राघवमब्रवीत्।

यथाऽयोध्या तथेयं ते राम किं करवाणि ते।।2.50.36।।

ईदृशं हि महाबाहो कः प्राप्स्यत्यतिथिं प्रियम्।


आर्तः in anguish, गुहः Guha, तं राघवम् to Rama, सम्परिष्वज्य having embraced, अब्रवीत् said, राम O Rama, ते to you, अयोध्या Ayodhya, यथा as how, इयम् this city, तथा like that, ते to you, किम् what, करवाणि shall I do?, महाबाहो O mightyarmed one, ईदृशम् such, प्रियम् beloved, अतिथिम् guest, कः who, प्राप्स्यति will get.

Overwhelmed with grief (to see Rama in bark), Guha embraced Rama and said This is just like Ayodhya to you. What can I do for you? O mightyarmed Rama, who can have the good fortune of receiving such a beloved guest like you?
ततो गुणवदन्नाद्यमुपादाय पृथग्विधम्।।2.50.37।।

अर्घ्यं चोपानयत्क्षिप्रं वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह।


ततः thereafter, पृथग्विधम् various kinds of, गुणवत् of good quality, अन्नाद्यम् rice and other eatables, उपादाय having brought, क्षिप्रम् quickly, अर्घ्यं च drinks also, उपानयत् he brought, इदम् वाक्यं च these words, उवाच ह also spoke.

Thereafter he quickly brought rice and various kinds of tasty food and drink as welcome offerings and said to him:
स्वागतं ते महाबाहो तवेयमखिला मही।।2.50.38।।

वयं प्रेष्या भवान्भर्ता साधु राज्यं प्रशाधि नः।


महाबाहो O mightyarmed one, ते to you, स्वागतम् welcome, अखिला entire, इयं मही this land, तव is yours, वयम् we, प्रेष्याः are attendants, भवान् you, भर्ता master, नः for us, राज्यम् this
kingdom, साधु worthy of, प्रशाधि rule.

O mightyarmed prince, welcome to you This entire land belongs to you. You are our master and we, your servants. Rule this kingdom happily.
भक्ष्यं भोज्यं च पेयं च लेह्यंचेदमुपस्थितम्।।2.50.39।।

शयनानि च मुख्यानि वाजिनां खादनं च ते।


भक्ष्यम् food to be eaten by biting, भोज्यम् food to be eaten by chewing, पेयम् food fit for drinking, लेह्यं च food fit for licking, मुख्यानि excellent, शयनानि beds, ते for you, वाजिनाम् for horses, खादनं च also fodder, इदम् here, उपस्थितम् awaits.

All kinds of food to be taken by biting, chewing, drinking and licking are here for you. There is an excellent bed ready. There are also enough fodder for the horses.
एवं ब्रुवाणं तु गुहं राघवः प्रत्युवाच ह।।2.50.40।।

अर्चिताश्चैव हृष्टाश्च भवता सर्वथा वयम्।

पद्भ्यामभिगमाच्चैव स्नेहसन्दर्शनेन च।।2.50.41।।


एवम् in this way, ब्रुवाणम् speaking, गुहम् to Guha, राघवः Rama, प्रत्युवाच ह replied, वयम् we, सर्वथा in every way, भवता by you, पद्भ्याम् on foot, अभिगमाच्चैव coming to meet us, स्नेहसन्दर्शनने च showing your friendliness, अर्चिताश्चैव we have been worshipped, हृष्टाश्च also pleased.

Hearing (the words of) Guha, Rama replied By coming on foot to meet us and by displaying your friendliness, you have amply honoured us and pleased us.
भुजाभ्यां साधु पीनाभ्यां पीडयन्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।

दिष्ट्या त्वां गुह पश्यामि ह्यरोगं सह बान्धवैः।

अपि ते कुशलं राष्ट्रे मित्रेषु च धनेषु च।।2.50.42।।


पीनाभ्याम् strong, भुजाभ्याम् with his arms, साधु tightly, पीडयन् pressing together, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said, गुह O Guha, दिष्ट्या luckily, सह बान्धवै: with all relations, अरोगम् hale and hearty, त्वाम् you, पश्यामि am seeing, ते your, राष्ट्रे kingdom, मित्रेषु in friends, धनेषु च wealth also, अपि कुशलम् (hope) all is well.

Rama embracing him tightly with his strong arms said, O Guha it is fortunate that I am able to see you and your relations in good health. Hope, all is well with your friends, kingdom and (collection of) revenue.
यत्त्विदं भवता किञ्चित्प्रीत्या समुपकल्पितम्।

सर्वं तदनुजानामि न हि वर्ते प्रतिग्रहे।।2.50.43।।


भवता by you, प्रीत्या with affection, इदम् now, यत् किञ्चित् whatever, समुकल्पितम् has been arranged, तत् सर्वम् all that, अनुजानामि I am accepting (giving you back), प्रतिग्रहे in acceptance, न वर्ते हि unable.

I must give you back whatever you have offered me so affectionately. I am not in a position to accept anything.
कुशचीराजिनधरं फलमूलाशिनं च माम्।

विद्धि प्रणिहितं धर्मे तापसं वनगोचरम्।।2.50.44।।


माम् me, कुशचीराजिनधरम् wearing garments made of bark, kusa grass and antelope skin, फलमूलाशिनम् susbsisting on fruits and roots, धर्मे in righteousness, प्रणिहितम् initiated, वनगोचरम् wandering in the forest, तापसम् like an ascetic, विद्धि you may know.

You must know me as an ascetic devoted to righeousness,and as a wanderer in the forest wearing garments made of bark, kusa grass and antelope skin, subsisting on fruits and roots.
अश्वानां खादनेनाहमर्थी नान्येन केनचित्।

एतावताऽत्र भवता भविष्यामि सुपूजितः।।2.50.45।।


अहम् I, अश्वानाम् for horses, खादनेन with fodder, अर्थी I am a seeker, अन्येन by other thing, केनचित् with any one, न not, अत्र here, एतावता to this extent, भवता by you, सुपूजितः wellhonoured, भविष्यामि shall become.

What I now need is fodder for the horses. Nothing more. If you can do this much, I'll deem it a great honour.
एते हि दयिता राज्ञः पितुर्दशरथस्य मे।

एतैस्सुविहितैरश्वै भविष्याम्यहमर्चितः।।2.50.46।।


एते these horses, मे पितुः my father's, दशरथस्य राज्ञः king Dasaratha's, दयिताः liked, सुविहितैः welltended, एतैः by these, अश्वैः with horses, अहम् I, अर्चितः worshipped, भविष्यामि shall become.

If these horses which are the favourites of my father, king Dasaratha are wellfed, I shall consider myself honoured.
अश्वानां प्रतिपानं च खादनं चैव सोऽन्वशात्।

गुहस्तत्रैव पुरुषां स्त्वरितं दीयतामिति।।2.50.47।।


सः that, गुहः Guha, तत्रैव there itself, पुरुषान् men, अश्वानाम् for the horses, प्रतिपानं च liquids like water, खादनं चैव forage, त्वरितम् quickly, दीयतामिति be given, अन्वशात् ordered.

Guha ordered the men standing there Give these horses liquids like water and forage.
ततश्चीरोत्तरासङ्गः सन्ध्यामन्वास्य पश्चिमाम्।

जलमेवाददे भोज्यं लक्ष्मणेनाऽऽहृतं स्वयम्।।2.50.48।।


ततः then, चीरोत्तरासङ्ग: upper robe, पश्चिमां सन्ध्याम् Sandhya, अन्वास्य offering oblations,
लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, स्वयम् himself, आहृतम् which has been brought, जलमेव water only, भोज्यम् as food, आददे partook.

Rama wearing the upper garment then offered oblations to Sandhya and partook of only water as refreshment, brought by Lakshmana.
तस्य भूमौ शयानस्य पादौ प्रक्षाल्य लक्ष्मणः।

सभार्यस्य ततोऽभ्येत्य तस्थौ वृक्षमुपाश्रितः।।2.50.49।।


लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, भूमौ on the ground, शयानस्य for sleeping, सभार्यस्य with his consort, तस्य his, पादौ feet, प्रक्षाल्य having washed, ततः then, अभ्येत्य having gone towards, वृक्षम् tree, उपाश्रितः took refuge, तस्थौ he stood.

Lakshmana washed the feet of Rama who along with his consort lay upon the ground, and returned to take rest under the tree.
गुहोऽपि सह सूतेन सौमित्रिमनुभाषयन्।

अन्वजाग्रत्ततो राममप्रमत्तो धनुर्धरः।।2.50.50।।


गुहोऽपि Guha also, सूतेन सह along with the charioteer, सौमित्रिम् to Lakshmana, अनुभाषयन् while talking, ततः then, धनुर्धरः bow in hand, अप्रमत्तः by being vigilant, रामम् about Rama, अन्वजाग्रत् kept awake.

Guha, bow in hand, conversing with Sumantra and Soumitri (Son of Sumitra, Lakshmana) then kept vigil over Rama by remaining awake (all night).
तथा शयानस्य ततोऽस्य धीमतो

यशस्विनो दाशरथेर्महात्मनः।

अदृष्टदुःखस्य सुखोचितस्य सा

तदाव्यतीयाय चिरेण शर्वरी।।2.50.51।।


ततः then, अदृष्टदुःखस्य one who never experienced troubles, सुखोचितस्य used to comforts, धीमतः sagacious, यशस्विनः illustrious, महात्मनः magnanimous, तदा then, तथा like that, शयानस्य lying down, अस्य दाशरथेः for this son of Dasaratha (Rama), सा that, शर्वरी night, चिरेण as of long duration, व्यतीयाय passed.

As the wise, illustrious, magnanimous son of Dasaratha (Rama) who was used to pleasures and not discomfort lay on the ground, the long night slipped away.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे पञ्चाशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the fiftieth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
