[Bharata takes leave of Bharadwaja -- departs for mount Chitrakuta.]

ततस्तां रजनीमुष्य भरतस्सपरिच्छदः।

कृतातिथ्यो भरद्वाजं कामादभिजगाम ह।।2.92.1।।


ततः thereafter, कृतातिथ्यः having received the hospitality, सपरिच्छदः with his retinue, भरतः Bharata, तां रजनीम् that night, उष्य having spent, कामात् intention of, भरद्वाजम् Bharadwaja, अभिजगाम ह approached.

Bharata with his retinue received the hospitality and spent the night at Bharadwaja's ashram. Then he approached Bharadwaja on his own.
तं ऋषिः पुरुषव्याघ्रं प्राञ्जलिं प्रेक्ष्य चाऽगतम्।

हुताग्निहोत्रो भरतं भरद्वाजोऽभ्यभाषत।।2.92.2।।


हुताग्निहोत्रः who had completed his firesacrifice, भरद्वाजः ऋषिः sage Bharadwaja, पुरुषव्याघ्रम् tiger among men, प्राञ्जलिम् with folded palms, आगतम् arrived, तं भरतम् to Bharata, प्रेक्ष्य having seen, अभ्यभाषत spoke.

Seeing Bharata, the best among men, who stood with folded palms, sage Bharadwaja, who had just completed his firesacrifice, said to him:
कच्चिदत्र सुखा रात्रिस्तवास्मद्विषये गता।

समग्रस्ते जनः कच्चिदातिथ्ये शंस मेऽनघ।।2.92.3।।


अत्र here, अस्मद्विषये at our place, तव to you, रात्रिः night, सुखम् happily, गता कच्चित् hope you spent, हे अनघ O sinless one, आतिथ्ये in the matter of hospitality, ते जनः your people, समग्रः कच्चित् all well, मे शंस tell me.

O sinless one hope, you spent the night at our hermitage well? Tell me whether all your people enjoyed the hospitality?
तमुवाचाञ्जलिं कृत्वा भरतोऽभिप्रणम्य च।

आश्रमादभिनिष्क्रान्तमृषिमुत्तमतेजसम्।।2.92.4।।


भरतः Bharata, आश्रमात् from the hermitage, अभिनिष्क्रान्तम् emerging, उत्तमतेजसम् great power, तम् ऋषिम् that sage, अञ्जलिं कृत्वा with palms joined together, अभिप्रणम्य च and saluting him, उवाच said:

Bharata saluted with folded palms the sage of great powers. And emerging from the hermitage, replied:
ससुखोषितोऽस्मि भगवन्समग्रबलवाहनः।

तर्पितस्सर्वकामैश्च सामात्यो बलवत्त्वया।।2.92.5।।


भगवन् O holy one, सामात्यः with my ministers, समग्रबलवाहनः with the entire army and animals, त्वया by you, बलवत् exceedingly, सर्वकामैः with all desires, तर्पितः gratified, सुखोषितः अस्मि passed pleasantly.

O holy one, I with my ministers and the entire army of men and animals passed the night happily. All our desires have been gratified by you.
अपेतक्लमसन्तापा स्सुभिक्षास्सुप्रतिश्रयाः।

अपि प्रेष्यानुपादाय सर्वे स्म सुसुखोषिताः।।2.92.6।।


प्रेष्यान् अपि even the messengers, उपादाय including, सर्वे all of us, अपेतक्लमसन्तापाः freed from fatigue and heat, सुभिक्षाः wellnourished, सुप्रतिश्रयाः wellhoused, सुसुखोषिताः स्मः we passed (the night) happily

All of us including the messengers were released from fatigue and heat. We were wellfed and wellhoused and the night was wellspent.
आमन्त्रयेऽहं भगवन् कामं त्वामृषिसत्तमः।

समीपं प्रस्थितं भ्रातुर्मैत्रेणेक्षस्व चक्षुषा।।2.92.7।।


भगवन् O venerable one, ऋषिसत्तमः O excellent of the ascetics, अहम् I, त्वाम् you, कामम् greatly, आमन्त्रये I take leave of you, भ्रातुः brother's, समीपम् to, प्रस्थितम् set out, मैत्रेण friendly, चक्षुषा with eye, ईक्षस्व you may consider.

O venerable one O excellent of the ascetics I seek your leave. As I am proceeding to see my brother, bless me with a kindly look.
आश्रमं तस्य धर्मज्ञ धार्मिकस्य महात्मनः।

आचक्ष्व कतमो मार्गः कियानिति च शंस मे।।2.92.8।।


धर्मज्ञ O knower of righteous ways, धार्मिकस्य of the righteous, तस्य महात्मनः of that magnanimous one, आश्रमम् hermitage, आचक्ष्व tell me, कतमः which, मार्गः is the path कियान् how far, इति च that one also, मे to me, शंस tell.

O knower of righteousness Tell me which path leads to the hermitage of that righteous and magnanimous one (Rama)? And how far is it (from here)?
इति पृष्टस्तु भरतं भ्रातृदर्शनलालसम्।

प्रत्युवाच महातेजा भरद्वाजो महातपाः।।2.92.9।।


महातेजाः brilliant, महातपाः a great sage, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, इति thus, पृष्टः questioned, भ्रातृदर्शनलालसम् yearning to see his brother, भरतम् to Bharata, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Thus questioned, the great sage, brilliant Bharadwaja replied to Bharata who was yearning to see his brother:
भरतार्धतृतीयेषु योजनेष्वजने वने।

चित्रकूटो गिरिस्तत्र रम्यनिर्झरकाननः।।2.92.10।।


भरत O Bharata, अर्धतृतीयेषु three and a half, योजनेषु yojanas (one yojana is equivalent to eight miles), तत्र there, अजने lonely, वने forest, रम्यनिर्झरकाननः with charming streams and woodlands, चित्रकूटः Chitrakuta, गिरिः mountain (is there).

O Bharata, three and a half yojanas from here in the lonely forest stands mount Chitrakuta, with its charming streams and woodlands
उत्तरं पार्श्वमासाद्य तस्य मन्दाकिनी नदी।

पुष्पितद्रुमसञ्छन्ना रम्यपुष्पितकानना।।2.92.11।।


तस्य its, उत्तरं पार्श्वम् northern side, आसाद्य having reached, पुष्पितद्रुमसञ्चन्ना covered with flowering trees, रम्यपुष्पितकानना with lovely, blossoming woods, मन्दाकिनी नदी there is river Mandakini.

On its northern side flows the river Mandakini which is densely covered with flowering trees and lovely blossoming woods (on its banks).
अनन्तरं तत्सरितश्चित्रकूटश्च पर्वतः।

तयोः पर्णकुटी तात तत्र तौ वसतो ध्रुवम्।।2.92.12।।


तत्सरितः that river, अनन्तरम् beyond, चित्रकूटः Chitrkuta, पर्वतः mountain, तयोः their, पर्णकुटी leafy hut, तात O dear child, तौ both of them, तत्र there, वसतः are living, ध्रुवम् this is certain.

O dear child, beyond that river lies mount Chitrakuta on which there is a hut made of leaves where, for sure, they both dwell.
दक्षिणेनैव मार्गेण सव्यदक्षिणमेव वा।

गजवाजिरथाकीर्णां वाहिनीं वाहिनीपते।।2.92.13।।

वाहयस्व महाभाग ततो द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम्।


वाहिनीपते lord of the army, महाभाग O distinguished one, गजवाजिरथाकीर्णाम् consisting of elephants, horses and chariots, वाहिनीम् army, दक्षिणेनैव to its south, मार्गेण through the path, सव्यदक्षिणमेव वा or towards southwest, वाहयस्व lead, ततः thereafter, राघवम् Rama, द्रक्षयसि you will see.

O distinguished lord of the army, if you lead your army full of elephants, horses and chariots through the southern path or towards the southwest, you will come across Rama there.
प्रयाणमिति तच्छ्रुत्वा रजराजस्य योषितः।

हित्वा यानानि यानार्हाः ब्राह्मणं पर्यवारयन्।।2.92.14।।


इति thus, प्रयाणम् about journey, श्रुत्वा having heard, यानार्हाः chariots worthy of them,
राजराजस्य king of kings, Dasaratha's, योषितः wives, यानानि carriages, हित्वा leaving, ब्राह्मणम् that brahmin, पर्यवारयन् stood around.

When they heard about the journey, the wives of Dasaratha descended from their chariots worthy of them and stood around the brahmin, Bharadwaja.
वेपमाना कृशा दीना सह देव्या सुमित्रया।

कौसल्या तत्र जग्राह कराभ्यां चरणौ मुनेः।।2.92.15।।


तत्र among them, कृशा emaciated, दीना desolate, कौसल्या Kausalya, वेपमाना trembling, मुनेः sage's, चरणौ feet, सुमित्रया देव्या सह along with Sumitra, जग्राह grasped.

Among them was Kausalya, trembling, emaciated and desolate, along with Sumitra. They grasped the feet of sage Bharadwaja with their hands.
असमृद्धेन कामेन सर्वलोकस्य गर्हिता।

कैकेयी तस्य जग्राह चरणौ सव्यपत्रपा।।2.92.16।।


असमृद्धेन with unfulfilled, कामेन with desire, सर्वलोकस्य for all the worlds, गर्हिता despised, कैकेयी Kaikeyi, सव्यपत्रपा overcome with shame, तस्य his, चरणौ feet, जग्राह grasped.

Kaikeyi with her unfulfilled desire and despised in all the worlds overcome with shame, also grasped his feet.
तं प्रदक्षिणमागम्य भगवन्तं महामुनिम्।

अदूरार्भरतस्यैव तस्थौ दीनमनास्तदा।।2.92.17।।


तदा then, भगवन्तम् divine, तं महामुनिम् that great ascetic, प्रदक्षिणं आगम्य reverently circumambulated, दीनमनाः with a sad heart, भरतस्य from Bharata, अदूरादेव not far away, तस्थौ stood.

She reverently circumambulated that great and divine ascetic and stood not far away
from Bharata with a sad heart.
ततः पप्रच्छ भरतं भरद्वाजो दृढव्रतः।

विशेषं ज्ञातुमिच्छामि मात्रूणां तव राघव।।2.92.18।।


ततः thereafter, दृढव्रतः firm in vows, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, भरतम् Bharata, पप्रच्छ enquired, राघव O Bharata, तव your, मात्रूणाम् mothers, विशेषम् individually, ज्ञातुम् to know, इच्छामि want desiring.

Then Bharadwaja, firm in his vows, said to Bharata, I want to know about your mothers individually.
एवमुक्तस्तु भरतो भरद्वाजेन धीमता।

उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा वाक्यं वचनकोविदः।।2.92.19।।


धीमता by the sagacious, भरद्वाजेन by Bharadwaja, एवम् thus, उक्तः asked, वचनकोविदः
proficient in speech, भरतः Bharata, प्राञ्जलि: भूत्वा with palms joined together in reverence, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said.

Thus asked by the sagacious Bharadwaja, Bharata, proficient in speech, replied with palms folded in reverence:
यामिमां भगवन् दीनां शोकानशनकर्शिताम्।

पितुर्हि महिषीं देवीं देवतामिव पश्यसि।।2.92.20।।

एषा तं पुरषव्याघ्रं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम्।

कौसल्या सुषुवे रामं धातारमदितिर्यथा।।2.92.21।।


भगवन् O venerable one, दीनाम् desolate, शोकानशनकर्शिताम् emaciated due to grief and fasting, पितुः father's, महिषीम् principal queen, देवतामिव resembling a goddess, याम् इमाम् देवीम् that this queen, पश्यसि you are seeing, एषा she, कौसल्या is Kausalya, अदितिः Aditi,
धातारं यथा like Dhata, सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम् walking with the powerful stride of a lion, पुरुषव्याघ्रम् tiger among men, तं रामम् that Rama, सुषुवे gave birth.

O venerable sage, this queen you are looking at, forlorn and emaciated due to grief and fasting, and who resembles a goddess is Kausalya, the principal queen of my father. As Aditi bore Dhata, she bore Rama, the best among men who walks with the powerful stride of a lion.
अस्या वामभुजं श्लिष्टा यैषा तिष्ठति दुर्मनाः।

कर्णिकारस्य शाखेव शीर्णपुष्पा वनान्तरे।।2.92.22।।

एतस्यास्तु सुतौ देव्याः कुमारौ देववर्णिनौ।

उभौ लक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नौ वीरौ सत्यपराक्रमौ।।2.92.23।।


या एषा this woman, दुर्मनाः plunged in grief, वनान्तरे in the midst of the forest, शीर्णपुष्पा with blossoms withered, कर्णिकारस्य of the karnikara tree, शाखेव like a branch, अस्याः this Kausalya's, वामभुजम् left arm, श्लिष्टा leaning, तिष्ठति standing, कुमारौ two princes, देववर्णिनौ
equal to gods in beauty, वीरौ heroes, सत्यपराक्रमौ possessing no vain prowess, लक्षणशत्रुघ्नौ Lakshmana and Satrughna, उभौ both, एतस्या देव्या: this queen's, सुतौ sons.

This lady plunged in grief, resembling the branch of a karnikara tree in the midst of the forest with blossoms withered and leaning on the left arm of Kausalya, is queen Sumitra, mother of two heroes, comparable to gods in beauty and possessing true prowess -- Lakshmana and Satrughna.
यस्याः कृते नरव्याघ्रौ जीवनाशमितो गतौ।

राजपुत्रविहीनश्च स्वर्गं दशरथो गतः।।2.92.24।।

क्रोधनामकृतप्रज्ञां दृप्तां सुभगमानिनीम्।

ऐश्वर्यकामां कैकेयीमनार्यामार्यारूपिणीम्।।2.92.25।।

ममैतां मातरं विद्धि नृशंसां पापनिश्चयाम्।

यतोमूलं हि पश्यामि व्यसनं महदात्मनः।।2.92.26।।


यस्याः कृते on whose account, नरव्याघ्रौ best of men (Rama and Lakshmana), इतः from here, जीवनाशम् destruction of life, गतौ obtained, राजा दशरथः king Dasaratha, पुत्रविहीनश्च deprived of his son, स्वर्गम् heaven, गतः attained, आत्मन: mine, महत् great, व्यसनम् calamity, यतोमूलम् the root cause of, पश्यामि I see, क्रोधानाम् irascible, अकृतप्रज्ञाम् is not discerning, दृप्ताम् proud, सुभगमानिनीम् considers herself beautiful, ऐश्वर्यकामाम् ambitious of wealth, अनार्याम् ignoble, आर्यरूपिणीम् in the guise of a noble woman, एताम् she, नृशंसाम् wicked, पापनिश्चयाम् intent on sinful acts, मम my, मातरम् mother, कैकेयीम् Kaikeyi, विद्धि you may know.

She is my mother Kaikeyi who is irascible, lacks the power of discrimination, proud, boastful of her beauty, ambitious of wealth, ignoble in the guise of a noble woman, wicked and intent on sinful acts. Behold her. You may know that because of her, Rama and Lakshmana the best of men entered the forest which may cause their destruction and king Dasaratha attained heaven. She alone is the root of this great calamity that I am presently confronting.
इत्युक्त्वा नरशार्दूलो बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा।

स निश्स्वास ताम्राक्षो नागः कृद्ध इव श्वसन्।।2.92.27।।


ताम्राक्षः with reddened eyes, नरशार्दूलः tiger among men, सः that Bharata, बाष्पगद्गदया in a voice choked with tears, गिरा with words, इति thus,उक्त्वा having said, कृद्धः angry, श्वसन् sighing, नागः इव like a king cobra, निश्स्वास heaved sighs.

Thus spoke Bharata, the best of men, with his eyes reddened and voice choked with sobs and hissing like a king cobra.
भरद्वाजो महर्षिस्तं ब्रुवन्तं भरतं तथा।

प्रत्युवाच महाबुद्धिरिदं वचनमर्थवत्।।2.92.28।।


महाबुद्धि: wise, महर्षिः great sage Maharshi, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, तथा thus, ब्रुवन्तम् speaking, तं भरतम् to that Bharata, अर्थवत् significant, इदं वचनम् these words, प्रत्युवाच
replied.

Hearing the words of Bharata, the great sage, wise Bharadwaja replied with meaningful words:
न दोषेणावगन्तव्या कैकेयी भरत त्वया।

रामप्रव्राजनं ह्येतत्सुखोदर्कं भविष्यति।।2.92.29।।


भरत O Bharata, कैकेयी Kaikeyi, त्वया by you, दोषेण with any fault, न अवगन्तव्या should not be imputed, एतत् this, रामप्रव्राजनम् banishment of Rama, सुखोदर्कम् of great felicity, भविष्यति हि will become.

O Bharata, you should not find fault with Kaikeyi. Rama's banishment will prove a great source of happiness in future (for mankind).
देवानां दानवानां च ऋषीणां भावितात्मनाम्।

हितमेव भविष्यद्धि रामप्रव्राजनादिह।।2.92.30।।


इह now, रामप्रव्राजनात् by banishing Rama, देवानाम् of gods, दानवानां च of demous, भावितात्मनाम् of purified souls, ऋषीणां rishis', हितमेव also welfare, भविष्यद्धि shall become.

Banishment of Rama will bring about the welfare of the gods, the demons, and the sages of purified souls.
अभिवाद्य तु संसिद्धः कृत्वा चैनं प्रदक्षिणम्।

आमन्त्र्य भरत स्सैन्यं युज्यतामित्यचोदयत्।।2.92.31।।


भरतः Bharata, एनम् him, अभिवाद्य having paid obeisance, संसिद्धः getting ready for the journey, प्रदक्षिणं च कृत्वा having circumambulated, आमन्त्र्य having taken leave of him, युज्यताम् इति Be harnessed, सैन्यम् the army, अचोदयत् urged.

Having paid obeisance, the accomplished Bharata circumambulated sage Bharadwaja,
look leave of him, and ordered his army to get ready.
ततो वाजिरथान्युक्तान् दिव्यान्हेमपरिष्कृतान्।

अध्यारोहत्प्रयाणार्थी बहून्बहुविधो जनः।।2.92.32।।


ततः then, बहुविधः different types, जनः people, प्रयाणार्थी wishing to proceed, दिव्यान् excellent, हेमपरिष्कृतान् decorated with gold, युक्तान् harnessed, वाजिरथान् horsechariots, अध्यारोहत् mounted.

Different groups of people intending to depart harnessed excellent horsechariots decorated with gold.
गजकन्या गजाश्चैव हेमकक्ष्याः पताकिनः।

जीमूता इव घर्मान्ते सघोषास्सम्प्रतस्थिरे।।2.92.33।।


हेमकक्ष्याः with golden girths, पताकिनः with pennants, गजकन्याः female elephants, गजाश्चैव
also male elephants, घर्मान्ते at the close of summer, जीमूताः इव like thunderclouds, सघोषाः with sounds, सम्प्रतस्थिरे set forth.

The male and female elephants wearing golden girths and decorated with pennants, set forth with their bells sounding like thunderclouds at the end of summer.
विविधान्यपि यानानि महन्ति च लघूनि च।

प्रययु स्सुमहार्हाणि पादै रेव पदातयः।।2.92.34।।


महन्ति च large ones, लघूनि च small ones, विविधानि of various kinds, सुमहार्हाणि costly, यानानि had carriages, प्रययुः set forth, पदातयः footsoldiers, पादैरेव set out on foot it self.

Various types of costly carriages, large and small, set forth, while the infantry marched on.
अथ यानप्रवेकैस्तु कौसल्याप्रमुखाः स्त्रियः।

रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षिण्यः प्रययुर्मुदितास्तदा।।2.92.35।।


अथ thereafter, कौसल्याप्रमुखाः headed by Kausalya, स्त्रियः women, रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षिण्यः eager to see Rama, मुदिताः delightfully, तदा then, यानप्रवेकैः in distinguished carriages, प्रययुः went.

The women headed by Kausalya, eager to see Rama, proceeded delightfully in distinguished carriages.
चन्द्रार्कतरुणाभासां निर्युक्तां शिबिकां शुभाम्।

आस्थाय प्रययौ श्रीमान्भरत स्सपरिच्छदः।।2.92.36।।


श्रीमान् majestic, भरतः Bharata, चन्द्रार्कतरुणाभासाम् with the splendour of the Sun and the Moon, निर्युक्ताम् kept ready, शुभाम् auspicious, शिबिकाम् palanquin, आस्थाय having got in, सपरिच्छदः with retinue, प्रययौ proceeded.

Magnanimous Bharata got into an auspicious palanquin of the splendour of the Sun and the Moon kept ready and proceeded amidst escorts.
सा प्रयाता महासेना गजवाजिरथाकुला।

दक्षिणां दिशमावृत्य महामेघ इवोत्थितः।।2.92.37।।

वनानि तु व्यतिक्रम्य जुष्टानि मृगपक्षिभिः।

गङ्गायाः परवेलायां गिरिष्वपि नदीषु च।।2.92.38।।


गजवाजिरथाकुला teeming with elephants, horses and chariots, सा महासेना that vast army, उत्थितः that has arisen, महामेघ इव like a lofty cloud, दक्षिणां दिशम् southward, आवृत्य having spread, मृगपक्षिभिः with birds and beasts, जुष्टानि visited, वनानि forests, व्यतिक्रम्य traversing, गङ्गाया: river Ganga's, परवेलायाम् on the other side, गिरिष्वपि through mountains also, नदीषु च and streams, प्रयाता proceeded.

That vast army teeming with elephants, horses and chariots proceeded southward spreading like a lofty cloud that had risen in the sky, traversing through the forests full of birds and beasts, passing through the mountains and streams on the other side of the river Ganga.
सा सम्प्रहृष्टद्विपवाजियोधा वित्रासयन्ती मृगपक्षिसङ्घान्।

महद्वनं तत्प्रतिगाहमाना रराज सेना भरतस्य तत्र।।2.92.39।।


सम्प्रहृष्टद्विपवाजियोधा with soldiers, elephants and horses in high spirits, मृगपक्षिसङ्घान् flocks of birds and beasts, वित्रासयन्ती frightening, भरतस्य Bharata's, सा सेना that army, तत्र there, तत् that, महत् great, वनम् forest, प्रतिगाहमाना while entering, रराज looked splendid.

Bharata's army of soldiers, elephants and horses, all in high spirits, looked splendid while entering the forest full of frightening flocks of birds and beasts.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे द्विनवतितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the ninetysecond sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
