[Sita relates the story of her marriage to Anasuya --- Anasuya bestows Sita with divine gifts.]

sātvēvamuktā vaidēhī anasūyā.nasūyayā.

pratipūjya vacō mandaṅ pravaktumupacakramē৷৷2.118.1৷৷


anasūyā one who is free from malice, sā vaidēhī that Vaidehi, anasūyayā by Anasuya, ēvam in this way, uktā when addressed, vacaḥ those words, pratipūjya having worshipped, mandam in
a gentle tone, pravaktum to tell, upacakramē commenced.

When Anasuya thus addressed Vaidehi who is free from any malice, she worshipped Anasuya and started speaking in a gentle tone.
naitadāścaryamāryāyā yanmāṅ tvamabhibhāṣasē.

viditantu mamāpyētadyathā nāryāḥ patirguruḥ৷৷2.118.2৷৷


tvam you, mām to me, yat abhibhāṣasē you are instructing, ētat all this, āryāyāḥ for a noble lady like you, āścaryam wonder, na not, nāryā for a woman, patiḥ husband, guruḥ the revered one, yathā as, ētat all this, mamāpi to me, viditaṅ tu also known.

It is no wonder that a noble lady like you should instruct me this way. It is known to me that a husband is a guru to his wife.
yadyapyēṣa bhavēdbhartā mamā.ryē vṛttavarjitaḥ.

advaidhamupacartavyastathāpyēṣa mayā bhavēt৷৷2.118.3৷৷


āryē O noble lady, ēṣaḥ mama bhartā my husband, vṛttavarjitaḥ devoid of good conduct, yadyapi bhavēt even if it happens, tathāpi even then, ēṣaḥ he, mayā by me, advaidham without hesitation, upacartavyaḥ should be obeyed.

O noble lady, even if my husband is devoid of good conduct, he should be obeyed without showing any hesitation.
kiṅ punaryō guṇaślāghya ssānukrōśō jitēndriyaḥ.

sthirānurāgō dharmātmā mātṛvatpitṛvatpriyaḥ৷৷2.118.4৷৷


yaḥ such a man, guṇaślāghyaḥ is worthy of applause for his virtues, sānukrōśa: compassionate, jitēndriyaḥ subdued his senses, sthirānurāgaḥ ever affectionate, dharmātmā righteous man, mātṛvat
like a mother, pitṛvat like a father, priyaḥ is dear, kiṅ punaḥ where is the need to say.

What to speak of a husband if he is worthy of applause for his virtues, is compassionate, a subduer of the senses, righteous and ever affectionate like a mother and a father?
yāṅ vṛttiṅ vartatē rāmaḥ kausalyāyāṅ mahābalaḥ.

tāmēva nṛpanārīṇāmanyāsāmapi vartatē৷৷2.118.5৷৷


mahābalaḥ mighty, rāmaḥ Rama, kausalyāyām in Kausalya, yāṅ vṛttim such treatment, vartatē behaves, anyāsām with others, nṛpanārīṇāmapi consorts of the king, tāmēva the same way, vartatē behaves.

Mighty Rama shows the same behaviour and treatment towards the other consorts of the king as he does towards his own mother Kausalya.
sakṛddṛṣṭāsvapi striṣu nṛpēṇa nṛpavatsalaḥ.

mātṛvadvartatē vīrō mānamutsṛjya dharmavit৷৷2.118.6৷৷


nṛpavatsalaḥ affectionate towards king Dasaratha, dharmavit one who is conversant with righteousness, vīraḥ heroic Rama, nṛpēṇa by king, sakṛt only once, dṛṣṭāsu seen, striṣvapi in any woman, mānam pride, utsṛjya setting aside, mātṛvat like a mother, vartatē abides.

Heroic Rama is affectionate towards king Dasaratha and is conversant with righteousness. Renouncing the sense of self-respect he honours all the women on whom his father had cast his glance even once just as his own mother.
āgacchantyāśca vijanaṅ vanamēvaṅ bhayāvaham.

samāhitaṅ mē śvaśrvā ca hṛdayē taddhṛtaṅ mahat৷৷2.118.7৷৷


ēvam in this way, bhayāvaham frightful, vijanam desolate, vanam forest, āgacchantyāḥ when I was coming, mē to me, śvaśvā by mother-in-law, samāhitam imparted, tat that, mahat wise
instruction, hṛdayē in my heart, dhṛtam is firmly grasped.

When departing for this frightful and desolate forest, the great (advice) imparted by my mother-in-law is firmly fixed in my mind.
pāṇipradānakālē ca yatpurātvagni sannidhau.

anuśiṣṭā jananyā.smi vākyaṅ tadapi mē dhṛtam৷৷2.118.8৷৷


purā formerly, pāṇipradānakālē ca at the time of bestowal of my hand to Rama, agni sannidhau in the presence of sacrificial marriage fire, jananyā by my mother, yat vākyam that word, anuśiṣṭā āsmi I have been taught, tadapi that also, mē to me, dhṛtam hold

When I have been taught by my mother earlier, at the time of bestowal of my hand to Rama in the presence of the sacrificial fire (as witness) is etched in my mind.
navīkṛtaṅ tu tatsarvaṅ vākyaistē dharmacāriṇi.

patiśuśrūṣaṇānnāryāstapō nānyadvidhīyatē৷৷2.118.9৷৷


dharmacāriṇi O follower of righteous duty (Anasuya), tē vākyaiḥ your words, tat sarvam all that, navīkṛtam renewed (reminded afresh), nāryāḥ for women, patiśuśrūṣaṇāt more than obedience to her husband, anyat other, tapaḥ ascetic practice, na vidhīyatē is not laid down.

O righteous one (Anasuya), after listening to your words the instructions given by my
mother-in-law and my mother are renewed (remembered again). For a woman, no other penance is laid down (in scriptures) except service to her husband.
sāvitrī patiśuśrūṣāṅ kṛtvā svargē mahīyatē.

tathāvṛttiśca yātā tvaṅ patiśuśrūṣayā divam৷৷2.118.10৷৷


patiśuśrūṣām service to her husband, kṛtvā having rendered, sāvitrī Savitri, svargē in heaven, mahīyatē is honoured, tathāvṛtti: having followed the same path, tvaṅ ca you also, patiśuśrūṣayā through serving your husband, divam to heaven, yātā shall go.

Having served her husband (faithfully), Savitri is honoured in heaven. You also, by
following the same path of serving your husband, shall reach the heaven.
variṣṭhā sarvanārīṇāmēṣā ca divi dēvatā.

rōhiṇī na vinācandraṅ muhūrtamapi dṛśyatē৷৷2.118.11৷৷


sarvanārīṇām among all women, variṣṭhā the very best, dēvatā goddess, ēṣā rōhiṇī this Rohini, divi in the sky, candraṅ vinā without the Moon, muhūrtamapi even for a moment, na dṛśyatē is not seen.

Rohini, the very best among all women and the goddess of heaven, is never seen in the sky separated from the moon even for a moment.
ēvaṅvidhāśca pravarāḥ striyō bhartṛdṛḍhavratāḥ.

dēvalōkē mahīyantē puṇyēna svēna karmaṇā৷৷2.118.12৷৷


ēvaṅvidhāḥ such women, pravarāḥ excellent, bhartṛdṛḍhavratāḥ firm in their vows to their husbands, striyaḥ women, puṇyēna by merit, svēna by their own, karmaṇā deeds, dēvalōkē in the world of the gods, mahīyantē are highly revered.

Execellent women such as these, firm in their vows to their husband are highly revered in the world of gods through their own meritorious deeds.
tatō.nasūyā saṅhṛṣṭā śrutvōktaṅ sītayā vacaḥ.

śirasyāghrāya cōvāca maithilīṅ harṣayantyuta৷৷2.118.13৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, sītayā by Sita, uktam spoken, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, anasūyā Anasuya, saṅhṛṣṭā highly rejoiced, maithilīm to Sita, śirasi on her forehead, aghrāya having kissed, harṣayantī in order to make her happy, uvāca said.

Thereafter hearing Sita's words, Anasuya affectionately kissed her forehead and said
this in order to make her happy:
niyamairvividhairāptaṅ tapō hi mahadasti mē.

tatsaṅśritya balaṅ sītē chandayē tvāṅ śucivratē৷৷2.118.14৷৷


śucivratē O woman of pure conduct, sītē O Sita!, vividhaiḥ by various, niyamaiḥ by austerities, āptam obtained, mahat great, tapaḥ ascetic power, mē to me, asti hi is there to my credit, tat balam that ascetic power, saṅśritya having resorted to, tvām you, chandayē I shall cause your enjoyment.

O Sita of pure conduct, I have great ascetic power obtained through practising various austerities. With its strength I shall give what you want for your enjoyment.
upapannaṅ manōjñaṅ ca vacanaṅ tava maithili.

prītā cāsmyucitaṅ kiṅ tē karavāṇi bravīhi mē৷৷2.118.15৷৷


maithili O Sita, tava vacanam your words, upapannam are befitting, manōjñaṅ ca also pleasing, prītā āsmi I am pleased, ucitam appropriate thing, kiṅ what, tē to you, karavāṇi shall I do, mē to me, bravīhi tell.

O Sita, I am glad to hear your befitting and pleasing words. Tell me what appropriate thing you desire and I shall give you.
syāstadvacanaṅ śrūtvā vismitā mandavismayā.

kṛtamityabravīstītā tapōbalasamanvitām৷৷2.118.16৷৷


sītā Sita, tasyāḥ her, tadvacanam those words, śutvā having heard, vismitā was surprised, mandavismayā with a gentle smile, tapōbalasamanvitām endowed with ascetic power, kṛtamiti has been done, abravīt said.

On hearing her words Sita was surprised. With a gentle smile she said, to Anasuya who was endowed with ascetic power, 'I think you have already granted me the
boons'.
sā tvēvamuktā dharmajñā tayā prītatarā.bhavat.

saphalaṅ ca praharṣaṅ tē hanta sītē! karōmyaham৷৷2.118.17৷৷


dharmajñā knower of righteous ways, sā she (Anasuya), tayā by Sita, ēvam in this way, uktā having been addressed, prītatarā abhavat she was immensely pleased, sītē O Sita, hanta what a joy, praharṣam my delight, tē to you, saphalam fruitful, aham I, karōmi shall do.

When Sita said so, Anasuya who knew her righteous duty was immensely pleased. and replied, 'What a joy! I shall make the words you have spoken come true'.
idaṅ divyaṅ varaṅ mālyaṅ vastramābharaṇāni ca.

aṅgarāgaṅ ca vaidēhi mahārhaṅ cānulēpanam৷৷2.118.18৷৷

mayā dattamidaṅ sītē tava gātrāṇi śōbhayēt.

anurūpamasaṅkliṣṭaṅ nityamēva bhaviṣyati৷৷2.118.19৷৷


vaidēhi O princess of Videha, sītē Sita, divyam divine, varam best, idaṅ mālyam this garland, vastram raiment, ābharaṇāni ca jewellery, aṅgarāgaṅ ca fragrant unguents, mahārham precious, anulēpanaṅ ca ointment for anointing the body, mayā by me, dattam is bestowed, idam all this, tava to your, gātrāṇi limbs, śōbhayēt will beautify, nityam always, anurūpam convenient,
asaṅkliṣṭam bhaviṣyati will never impair.

O princess of Videha, O Sita, I bestow on you this best garland of the gods, raiment, jewellery, fragrant unguents, and precious ointment for anointing your body with. All this will beautify your limbs. It is convenient (to use) and will never fade.
aṅgarāgēṇa divyēna liptāṅgī janakātmajē!.

śōbhayiṣyasi bhartāraṅ yathā śrīrviṣṇumavyayam৷৷2.118.20৷৷


janakātmajē! O daughter of Janaka, divyē O divine lady, aṅgarāgēṇa with fragrant unguent, liptāṅgī anointing to your body, śrīḥ Lakshmi, avyayam imperishable, viṣṇum Vishnu, yathā
how, bhartāram your husband, śōbhayiṣyasi you will enhance the glory.

O daughter of Janaka, you will enhance the glory of your husband by anointing your body with this divine, fragrant unguent to your body like Lakshmi enhancing the glory of eternal Visnu.
sā vastramaṅgarāgaṅ ca bhūṣaṇāni srajastathā.

maithilī pratijagrāha prītidānamanuttamam৷৷2.118.21৷৷


sā maithilī that princess from Mithila, vastram raiment, aṅgarāgaṅ ca fragrant unguent, bhūṣaṇāni jewellery, tathā and, srajaḥ garlands, anuttamam incomparable, prītidānam gifts of love, pratijagrāha accepted.

That princess from Mithila accepted the incomparable gifts of love, the raiment, fragrant unguents, jewellery and also the garland.
pratigṛhya ca tatsītā prītidānaṅ yaśasvinī.

śliṣṭāñjalipuṭā tatra samupāsta tapōdhanām৷৷2.118.22৷৷


yaśasvinī illustrious lady, sītā Sita, tat that, prītidānam gifts of love, pratigṛhya having accepted, śliṣṭāñjalipuṭā with hands folded like a dish in reverence, tatra there, tapōdhanām
ascetic, samupāsta sat beside her.

Illustrious Sita accepted the gifts of love and with palms folded in reverence sat beside her, an ascetic.
tathā sītāmupāsīnāmanasūyā dṛḍhavratā.

vacanaṅ praṣṭumārēbhē kāñcitpriyakathāmanu৷৷2.118.23৷৷


dṛḍhavratā firm in her vows, anasūyā Anasuya, tathā in that way, upāsīnām sitting, sītām Sita,
kāṅcit certain, priyakathāmanu relating to a dear tale (that was close to her heart), praṣṭum to ask, vacanam these words, ārēbhē commenced.

Anasuya who was firm in her vows commenced to ask Sita this way about a certain tale (that was close to her heart).
svayaṅ varē kila prāptā tvamanēna yaśasvinā.

rāghavēṇēti mē sitē! kathā śrutimupāgatā৷৷2.118.24৷৷


sītē! O Sita!, tvam you, yaśasvinā by the illustrious one, rāghavēṇa by Rama, svayaṅvarē in the swayamvara (the choice of the husband by a princess in the public), prāptā kila are obtained, iti kathā so runs the story, mē my, śrutim my ear, upāgatā reached.

O Sita!, I have heard that you have been won by the illustrious Rama in the swayamvara. At least that is the story which reached my ears.
tāṅ kathāṅ śrōtumicchāmi vistarēṇa ca maithili!.

yathā.nubhūtaṅ kārtsnyēna tanmē tvaṅ vaktumarhasi৷৷2.118.25৷৷


maithili! O daughter of the king of Mithila, tām that story, vistarēṇa in detail, śrōtum to hear, icchāmi I wish, tat that one, tvam you, yathā.nubhūtam as you experienced, kātsnyēna entirely, vaktum arhasi you should tell me.

O daughter of Mithila, I would like to hear the story in detail. You should tell me the whole story as you experienced it.
ēvamuktā tu sā sītā tāṅ tatō dharmacāriṇīm.

śrūyatāmiti cōktvā vai kathayāmāsa tāṅ kathām৷৷2.118.26৷৷


ēvam thus, uktā addressed, sā sītā that Sita, tataḥ then, śrūyatām iti listen, uktvā having said, tām that, dharmacāriṇīm to one who practiced righteousness, tāṅ kathām that story, kathayāmāsa related.

'Listen' said Sita, thus addressed, and began relating the story to Anasuya, a performer of austerities.
mithilādhipatirvīrō janakō nāma dharmavit.

kṣatradharmē hyabhiratō nyāyataśśāsti mēdinīm৷৷2.118.27৷৷


mithilādhipatiḥ king of Mithila, vīraḥ a warrior, dharmavit one conversant wtih righteousness, janakō nāma by name Janaka, kṣatradharmē in the duties of kshatriya, abhirataḥ engaged, nyāyataḥ rightly, mēdinīm this earth, śāsti was ruling.

There is a king in Mithila, Janaka by name. He is heroic and is conversant with righteousness. Engaged in the duties of a kshatriya, he is rules the earth with justice.
tasya lāṅgalahastanya karṣataḥ kṣētramaṇḍalam.

ahaṅ kilōtthitā bhitvā jagatīṅ nṛpatēssutā৷৷2.118.28৷৷


tasya his, lāṅgalahastasya of a man holding a plough in hand, kṣētramaṇḍalam the circular plot of land for performing sacrifice, karṣataḥ while ploughing, aham I, nṛpatēḥ king's, sutā as daughter, jagatīm the earth, bhitvā breaking, utthitā kila arose, as they say.

When he was ploughing the circular plot of land for performing a sacrifice, it is said I emerged from the earth by breaking it and therefore I became his dauhghter.
sa māṅ dṛṣṭvā narapatirmuṣṭivikṣēpatatparaḥ.

pāṅsukuṇṭhitasarvāṅgīṅ janakō vismitō.bhavat৷৷2.118.29৷৷


muṣṭivikṣēpatatparaḥ eager to sow fistfuls of seeds, narapatiḥ king, saḥ janakaḥ that Janaka, pāṅsukuṇṭhitasarvāṅgīṅ with my body covered with dust, mām me, dṛṣṭvā having seen, vismitaḥ abhavat was astonished.

Engaged in sowing fistfuls of seeds, king Janaka found me covered with dust and
was astonished.
anapatyēna ca snēhādaṅkamārōpya ca svayam.

mamēyaṅ tanayētyuktvā snēhō mayi nipātitaḥ৷৷2.118.30৷৷


anapatyēna being childless, svayam himself, snēhāt out of affection, aṅkam in his lap, ārōpya placing, iyam this one, mama tanayā is my daughter, iti thus, uktvā having said, mayi in me, snēhaḥ affection, nipātitaḥ showered

As he had no children, he, on his own accord, lifted me up and placing me on his lap, saying, This is my daughter, he began showering (lots of) love on me.
antarikṣē ca vāguktā.pratimā.mānuṣī kila.

ēvamētannarapatē! dharmēṇa tanayā tava৷৷2.118.31৷৷


narapatē! O king, ētat this, ēvam in this way, apratimā incomparable, amānuṣī not a human being, tava to you, dharmēṇa by right, tanayā daughter, antarikṣē from out of the sky, vāk word, uktā was uttered.

'O king, she is an incomparable divine being. By right she is your daughter'. These were the words (Janaka) heard from out of the sky.
tataḥ prahṛṣṭō dharmātmā pitā mē mithilādhipaḥ.

avāptō vipulāṅ buddhiṅ māmavāpya narādhipaḥ৷৷2.118.32৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, dharmātmā righteous, narādhipa: the king, mithilādhipaḥ the lord of Mithila, mē pitā my father, prahṛṣṭaḥ was delighted, mām me, avāpya having got, vipulām noble, buddhim thought, avāptaḥ obtained.

Thereafter, my father and the righteous lord of Mithila was delighted in possessing me when a noble thought struck his mind.
dattā cāsmīṣṭavaddēvyai jyēṣṭhāyai puṇyakarmaṇā.

tayā sambhāvitā cāsmi snigdhayā mātṛsauhṛdāt৷৷2.118.33৷৷


puṇyakarmaṇā by a man of meritorious acts, jyēṣṭhāyai to the chief, dēvyaiḥ queen, iṣṭavat as the choicest one, dattā asmi I was given, snigdhayā by a lady endowed with affection, tayā by her, mātṛsauhṛdāt with the love of a mother, sambhāvitā asmi I was nourished.

Bestowed as the choicest one of meritorious acts on the chief queen, I was brought up by her, by nature affectionate, with the love of a mother.
patisaṅyōgasulabhaṅ vayō dṛṣṭvā tu mē pitā.

cintāmabhyagamaddhīnō vittanāśādivādhanaḥ৷৷2.118.34৷৷


mē pitā my father, patisaṅyōgasulabham a proper time for uniting with a husband, vayaḥ age, dṛṣṭvā having observed, dīnaḥ desolate, vittanāśāt due to loss of wealth, adhanaḥ iva like an poor man, cintām sorrow, abhyagamat obtained.

When my father saw I had attained the marriageable age, he was immersed in sorrow like an indigent man who had lost all his wealth.
sadṛśāccāpakṛṣṭācca lōkē kanyāpitā janāt.

pradharṣaṇāmavāpnōti śakrēṇāpi samō bhuvi৷৷2.118.35৷৷


bhuvi on earth, śakrēṇa with Indra, samō.pi though equal, kanyāpitā the father of an unmarried girl, sadṛśāḥ equal, apakṛṣṭāt by an inferior, janāt from men, lōkē in this world, pradharṣaṇām humiliation, avāpnōti will receive.

Even though he was an Indra on earth, as a father of an unmarried girl he would be humiliated by men who are his equal or inferior in this world.
tāṅ dharṣaṇāmadūrasthāṅ dṛṣṭvā cātmani pārthivaḥ.

cintārṇavagataḥ pāraṅ nāsasādāplavō yathā৷৷2.118.36৷৷


pārthivaḥ the king, tāṅ dharṣaṇām that humiliation, ātmani in him, adūrasthām not very far, dṛṣṭvā having observed, cintārṇavagataḥ submerged in a sea of sorrow, aplavō yathā like one without a float, pāram the shore, nāsasāda did not reach.

Having perceived that the humiliation is not very far, king Janaka was plunged in a sea of sorrow like one who cannot reach the shore without a float.
ayōnijāṅ hi māṅ jñātvā nādhyagacchadvicintayan.

sadṛśaṅ cānurūpaṅ ca mahīpālaḥ patiṅ mama৷৷2.118.37৷৷


mahīpālaḥ the ruler of earth, mām me, ayōnijām not born from the womb, jñātvā having known, mama for me, sadṛśam equal, anurūpaṅ ca suitable, patim husband, vicintayan thinking over, nādhyagacchat did not find.

The ruler of the earth knew that I was not born from a woman's womb, and could not find a suitable husband for me after deep reflection.
tasya buddhiriyaṅ jātā cintayānasya santatam.

svayaṅvaraṅ tanūjāyāḥ kariṣyāmīti dhīmataḥ৷৷2.118.38৷৷


santatam constantly, cintayānasya pondering deeply, dhīmataḥ wise, tasya his, tanūjāyāḥ for the daughter, svayaṅvaram swayamvara, kariṣyāmi I shall perform, iti thus, iyaṅ buddhi: this thought, jātā was born.

After constantly pondering over the matter, the wise king arrived at the decision to perform a swayamvara for his daughter.
mahāyajñē tadā tasya varuṇēna mahātmanā.

dattaṅ dhanurvaraṅ prītyā tūṇī cākṣayasāyakau৷৷2.118.39৷৷


tadā then, mahāyajñē at a great sacrifice, tasya to him, mahātmanā by the magnanimous, varuṇēna
by Varuna, prītyā with affection, dhanurvaram an excellent bow, dattam was given, akṣayasāyakau with two inexhaustible arrows, tūṇī ca and two quivers.

Magnanimous Varuna out of his affection had given him, on the occasion of a great sacrifice, an excellent bow with inexhaustible arrows and a pair of quivers.
asañcālyaṅ manuṣyaiśca yatnēnāpi ca gauravāt.

tanna śaktā namayituṅ svapnēṣvapi narādhipāḥ৷৷2.118.40৷৷


gauravāt because of weight, manuṣyaiḥ by a human, yatnēnāpi even with great effort, asañcālyam cannot be moved, tat that bow, narādhipāḥ lords of men, svapnēṣvapi even in their dreams, namayitum to bend, na śaktāḥ were not capable.

Because of its weight, no human could move that bow despite great effort nor were the kings capable of bending it even in their dreams.
taddhanuḥ prāpya mē pitrā vyāhṛtaṅ satyavādinā.

samavāyē narēndrāṇāṅ pūrvamāmantya pārthivān৷৷2.118.41৷৷


satyavādinā by a truthful man, mē pitrā by my father, pūrvam previously, pārthivān kings, āmantya having invited, narēndrāṇām of kings, samavāyē in the assembly, tat dhanuḥ that bow, prāpya having
acquired, vyāhṛtam addressed them.

My truthful father, after having acquired the bow, invited all the princes and placed the great bow before them in the assembly where he declared:
idaṅ ca dhanurudyamya sajyaṅ yaḥ kurutē naraḥ.

tasya mē duhitā bhāryā bhaviṣyati na saṅśayaḥ৷৷2.118.42৷৷


yaḥ nara: any man, idaṅ dhanuḥ this bow, udyamya having lifted, sajyaṅ ca string the bow, kurutē who
could do, tasya to him, mē duhitā my daughter, bhāryā wife, bhaviṣyati shall become, saṅśayaḥ na no doubt about it.

tacca dṛṣṭvā dhanuśśrēṣṭhaṅ gauravādgirisannibham.

abhivādya nṛpā jagmuraśaktāstasya tōlanē৷৷2.118.43৷৷


nṛpāḥ the kings, gauravāt due to heavy weight, girisannibham resembling a mountain, tat dhanuḥ śrēṣṭham that mighty bow, dṛṣṭvā beholding, tasya its, tōlanē in lifting, aśaktāḥ were unable, abhivādya paying obeisance, jagmuḥ went away.

Beholding the mighty bow resembling a mountain in weight, the kings, unable to lift it, paid their homage and left.
sudīrghasya tu kālasya rāghavō.yaṅ mahādyutiḥ.

viśvāmitrēṇa sahitō yajñaṅ draṣṭuṅ samāgataḥ৷৷2.118.44৷৷

lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā rāma ssatyaparākramaḥ.


sudīrghasya kālasya after a long time, rāghavaḥ Rama, mahādyutiḥ resplendent, satyaparākramaḥ whose prowess was truth, ayaṅ rāmaḥ this Rama, bhrātrā with his brother, lakṣmaṇēna saha along with
Lakshmana, viśvāmitrēṇa sahitaḥ together with Viswamitra, yajñam the sacrifice, draṣṭum to observe, samāgataḥ arrived.

After a long time, resplendent Rama whose prowess was truth, arrived along with his brother Lakshman and sage Viswamitra in order to witness the sacrifice.
viśvāmitrastu dharmātmā mama pitrā supūjitaḥ৷৷2.118.45৷৷

prōvāca pitaraṅ tatra bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.


dharmātmā the righteous man, viśvāmitrastu as for Viswamitra, mama pitrā by my father, supūjitaḥ well-honoured, tatra there, bhrātarau brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau to Rama and Lakshmana, pitaram to
my father, prōvāca uttered.

Having accepted the honour extended by my father, righteous Viswamitra spoke to him about those two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana.
sutau daśarathasyēmau dhanurdarśakāṅkṣiṇau.

dhanurdarśaya rāmāya rājaputrāya daivikam৷৷2.118.46৷৷


daśarathasya king Dasaratha's, sutau sons, imau both these, dhanurdarśakāṅkṣiṇau are desirous of seeing the bow, rājaputrāya to this king's son, rāmāya to Rama, daivikam divine, dhanuḥ bow, darśaya show.

'Both these sons of king Dasaratha wish to see the bow. Show the divine bow to prince Rama'.
ityuktastēna viprēṇa taddhanussamupānayat৷৷2.118.47৷৷

nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa tadā.namya mahābalaḥ.

jyāṅ samārōpya jhaḍiti pūrayāmāsa vīryavān৷৷2.118.48৷৷


tēna viprēṇa by that ascetic, iti thus, uktaḥ uttered, tatō then, dhanuḥ bow, upānayat brought,
mahābalaḥ mighty one, vīryavān valiant man, nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa in the twinkling of an eye, tat that one, ānamya having bent, jhaḍiti instantly, jyām the string, samārōpya pulling it, pūrayāmāsa drew it.

At the words of that ascetic, my father brought out the bow. Mighty and valiant Rama bent it and strung it and drew it in the twinkling of an eye.
tēna pūrayatā vēgānmadhyē bhagnaṅ dvidhā dhanuḥ.

tasya śabdō bhavadbhīmaḥ patitasyāśanēriva৷৷2.118.49৷৷


pūrayatā while stringing, tēna by Rama, vēgāt with force, dhanuḥ bow, madhyē in the middle, dvidhā
into two, bhagnam was broken, tasya its, bhīmaḥ dreadful, śabdaḥ sound, patitasya fallen, aśanēriva like that of a thunder, abhavat arose.

When Rama was stringing the bow with force, it was broken into two in the middle and fell down with a dreadful sound like that of thunder.
tatō.haṅ tatra rāmāya pitrā satyābhisandhinā.

niścitā dātumudyamya jalabhājanamuttamam৷৷2.118.50৷৷


tataḥ then, tatra there, satyābhisandhinā by one steadfast in truth, pitrā by my father, uttamam pure, jalabhājanam water-vessel, udyamya having raised, aham I, rāmāya to Rama , dātum to give, niścitā decided.

Then, my father steadfast in truth, held a vessel of pure water and declared his decision to offer me to Rama.
dīyamānāṅ na tu tadā pratijagrāha rāghavaḥ.

avijñāya pituśchandamayōdhyā.dhipatēḥ prabhōḥ৷৷2.118.51৷৷


tadā then, rāghavaḥ Rama, ayōdhyā.dhipatēḥ of the king of Ayodhya, prabhōḥ lord, pituḥ his father's, chandam opinion, avijñāya without knowing, dīyamānām being offered by father, na tu pratijagrāha
did not accept.

Then Rama did not accept the offer of my father straightaway before he knew the opinion of his father Dasaratha, king of Ayodhya.
tata śśvaśuramāmantrya vṛddhaṅ daśarathaṅ nṛpam.

mama pitrā tvahaṅ dattā rāmāya viditātmanē৷৷2.118.52৷৷


tataḥ then, mama pitrā by my father, śvaśuram father-in-law, vṛddham aged, daśarathaṅ nṛpam king
Dasaratha, āmantrya having invited, aham I, viditātmana: of a man who is known for his sagacity, rāmāya to Rama, dattā I was given.

Thereafter, my father-in-law, the aged king Dasaratha was invited and my father offered me to Rama known for his sagacity.
mama caivānujā sādhvī ūrmilā priyadarśanā.

bhāryarthē lakṣmaṇasyāpi pitrā dattā mama svayam৷৷2.118.53৷৷


mama my, anujā younger sister, sādhvī chaste, priyadarśanā pleasing appearance, ūrmilā Urmila, bhāryārthē as wife, mama pitrā by my father, svayam of his own accord, lakṣmaṇasyāpi for Lakshman, dattā was given.

My father, on his own accord, bestowed Urmila, my younger sister of chaste and of pleasing appearance as wife to Lakshmana.
ēvaṅ dattā.smi rāmāya tadā tasminsvayaṅvarē.

anuraktā.smi dharmēṇa patiṅ vīryavatāṅ varam৷৷2.118.54৷৷


tadā then, tasmin svayaṅvarē in that swayamvara, rāmāya for Rama, ēvam in this way, dattā asmi was bestowed, vīryavatām among valiant, varam foremost, patim husband, dharmēṇa in accordance with righteousness, anuraktā asmi I remain devoted.

In this way my father bestowed me on Rama in that swayamvara and I remain devoted to my husband who is the foremost among the valiant in treading the path of righteousness.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭādaśōttaraśatatamassargaḥ.
Thus ends the one hundredeighteenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
