[ Agastya extends hospitality to Rama, Lakshmana and Sita --- Rama receives the divine bow, many other weapons and missiles from Agastya.]

sapraviśyā.śramapadaṅ lakṣmaṇō rāghavānujaḥ.

agastyaśiṣyamāsādya vākyamētaduvāca ha৷৷3.12.1৷৷


rāghavānujaḥ brother of Rama, saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, āśramapadam at the hermitage, praviśya entered, agastyaśiṣyam disciple of Agastya, āsādya met, ētat all this, vākyam words, uvāca ha said.

Lakshmana, the younger brother of Rama, entered the hermitage of Agastya and met one of his disciples and said to him these words :
rājā daśarathō nāma jyēṣṭhastasya sutō balī.

rāmaḥ prāptō muniṅ draṣṭuṅ bhāryayā saha sītayā৷৷3.12.2৷৷


daśarathō nāma called Dasaratha, rājā king, tasya his, jyēṣṭhaḥ sutaḥ eldest son, balī strong, rāmaḥ Rama, bhāryayā with wife, sītayā saha accompanied by Sita, munim to the sage, draṣṭum to see, pāptaḥ has come.

The valiant eldest son of king Dasaratha has come along with his wife Sita to see the sage.
lakṣmaṇō nāma tasyāhaṅ bhrātā tvavarajō hitaḥ.

anukūlaśca bhaktaśca yadi tē śrōtramāgataḥ৷৷3.12.3৷৷


ahaṅ tu I am, tasya his, avarajaḥ younger to him, lakṣmaṇō nāma Lakshmana by name, bhrātā brother, hitaḥ well-wisher, anukūlaśca faithful, bhaktaśca devotee, tē śrōtram āgataḥ has been heard by you, yadi if at all.

I am his younger brother Lakshmana, his well-wisher and faithful devotee if you have at all heard about me.
tē vayaṅ vanamatyugraṅ praviṣṭāḥ pitṛśāsanāt.

draṣṭumicchāmahē sarvē bhagavantaṅ nivēdyatām৷৷3.12.4৷৷


tē vayam we, pitṛśāsanāt by the command of our father, atyugram very dense, vanam forest, praviṣṭāḥ have entered, sarvē all of us, bhagavantam divine sire, draṣṭum to see, icchāmahē desire, nivēdyatām it may be reported to him.

By the command of our father, we have entered this dense forest and desire to see the divine sire. Please report.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā lakṣmaṇasya tapōdhanaḥ.

tathētyuktvāgniśaraṇaṅ pravivēśa nivēditum৷৷3.12.5৷৷


tapōdhanaḥ the ascetic (endowed with wealth of penance), tasya lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, tat vacanam his words, śrutvā having heard, tathēti let it be so, uktvā said, nivēditum to report, agniśaraṇam fire-sanctuary pravivēśa entered.

The ascetic heard Lakshmana, and saying, 'let it be so', entered the fire-sanctuary to report.
sa praviśya muniśrēṣṭhaṅ tapasā duṣpradharṣaṇam.

kṛtāñjaliruvācēdaṅ rāmāgamanamañjasā৷৷3.12.6৷৷

yathōktaṅ lakṣmaṇēnaiva śiṣyō.gastyasya sammataḥ.


agastyasya Agastya's, sammataḥ favourite, śiṣyaḥ disciple, saḥ that, añjasā promptly, praviśya entered, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded palms, lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, yathōktamēva as told by him, tapasā with penance, duṣpradharṣaṇam who can not be violated , muniśrēṣṭham the best among the
ascetics, rāmāgamanam about Rama 's arrival, idam thus, uvāca said.

Having promptly entered, Agastya's favourite disciple with folded hands reported as he was told by Lakshmana about Rama's arrival to the great sage who was armed with the inviolable powers of penance :
putrau daśarathasyēmau rāmō lakṣmaṇa ēva ca৷৷3.12.7৷৷

praviṣṭāvāśramapadaṅ sītayā saha bhāryayā.


rāmaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇa ēva ca Lakshmana also, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, imau both, putrau sons, bhāryayā with wife, sītayā saha accompanied by Sita, āśramapadam to the hermitage, praviṣṭau entered.

Rama and Lakshmana, the two sons of Dasaratha along with Sita, wife of Rama, have arrived at the hermitage.
draṣṭuṅ bhavantamāyātau śuśrūṣārthamarindamau৷৷3.12.8৷৷

yadatrānantaraṅ tattvamājñāpayitumarhasi.


arindamau subduers of enemies (Rama and Lakshmana), bhavantam to your Holiness, draṣṭum to see, śuśrūṣārtham to serve, ayātau both have come, atra here, yat whatever, anantaram nexl, tat that, tvam you, ājñāpayitum to order, arhasi you may be pleased to.

Both the subduers of enemies have come here now to see and serve your Holiness. You may order what is to be done next.
tataśśiṣyādupaśrutya prāptaṅ rāmaṅ salakṣmaṇam৷৷3.12.9৷৷

vaidēhīṅ ca mahābhāgāmidaṅ vacanamabravīt.


tataḥ then, śiṣyāt from the disciple, salakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, prāptam arrived, upaśrutya having heard, mahābhāgām great, vaidēhīṅ Sita, daughter of the king of Videha, ca and, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt said.

Having heard from the disciple about the arrival of Rama, Lakshmana and great daughter of the king of Videha the sage said :
diṣṭyā rāmaścirasyādya draṣṭuṅ māṅ samupāgataḥ৷৷3.12.10৷৷

manasā kāṅkṣitaṅ hyasya mayāpyāgamanaṅ prati.


diṣṭyā fortunately, rāmaḥ Rama, cirasya after a long time, mām me, draṣṭum to see, adya today, samupāgataḥ arrived here luckily, asya his, āgamanaṅ prati coming here, mayā by me, manasā at heart, kāṅkṣitaṅ hi was desired indeed.

It is good fortune that Rama has come here after a long time to see me. I was longing for his arrival.
gamyatāṅ satkṛtō rāmassabhāryassahalakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷3.12.11৷৷

pravēśyatāṅ samīpaṅ mē kiṅ cāsau na pravēśitaḥ.


gamyatām go (quickly), sabhāryaḥ along with his wife, sahalakṣmaṇaḥ with Lakshmana, rāmaḥ Rama, satkṛtaḥ rendering due hospitality, mē my, samīpam presence, pravēśyatām may be ushered in, asau he, kim why, na pravēśitaḥ not brought in so far ?

Go quickly and with due hospitality conduct Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana into my presence. Why was he not ushered in so long?
ēvamuktastu muninā dharmajñēna mahātmanā৷৷ 3.12.12৷৷

abhivādyābravīcchiṣyastathēti niyatāñjaliḥ.


dharmajñēna by the knower of rightousness, mahātmanā by the great soul, muninā by the sage, ēvam thus, uktaḥ asked, śiṣyaḥ disciple, niyatāñjaliḥ with folded palms, abhivādya respectfully, tathēti ,so be it, abravīt said.

'So be it !' said the disciple respectfully with folded palms in response to what the
great sage, knower of dharma, commanded.
tatō niṣkramya sambhrāntaśśiṣyō lakṣmaṇamabravīt৷৷3.12.13৷৷

kvāsau rāmō muniṅ draṣṭumētu praviśatu svayam.


tataḥ thereafter, śiṣyaḥ the disciple, sambhrāntaḥ exited, niṣkramya after coming out, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, abravīt said, asau he, rāmaḥ Rama, kva where is he?, munim sage, draṣṭum to see, ētu he may come, svayam himself, praviśatu let him come in.

Then the disciple in a state of excitement came out of the hermitage and said to Lakshmana, 'Where is Rama? Let him come himself to see the sage'.
tatō gatvāśramadvāraṅ śiṣyēṇa saha lakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷ 3.12.14৷৷

darśayāmāsa kākutsthaṅ sītāṅ ca janakātmajām.


tataḥ then, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, śiṣyēṇa saha along with the disciple, āśramadvāram entrance of the hermitage, gatvā after reaching, kākutstham Rama of the Kakutstha family, janakātmajām daughter of Janaka, sītāṅ ca Sita also, darśayāmāsa showed.

Then Lakshmana reached the entrance of the hermitage with the disciple and showed Rama of the Kakutstha race and Sita, daughter of Janaka .
taṅ śiṣyaḥ praśritō vākyamagastyavacanaṅ bruvan৷৷3.12.15৷৷

prāvēśayadyathānyāyaṅ satkārārhaṅ susatkṛtam.


śiṣyaḥ disciple, praśritaḥ most obediently, agastyavacanam Agastya's words, vākyam utterance, bruvan while informing, satkārārham one who deserved hospitality, susatkṛm treating with respect, tam him, yathānyām in an appropriate way, prāvēśayat ushered in.

The disciple humbly reported Agastya's words and ushered him in with befitting hospitality.
pravivēśa tatō rāmassītayā sahalakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷3.12.16৷৷

praśāntahariṇākīrṇamāśramaṅ hyavalōkayan.


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ Rama, sītayā with Sita, sahalakṣmaṇaḥ and with Lakshmana, praśāntahariṇākīrṇam full of quietly moving deer, āśramam hermitage, avalōkayan observing, pravivēśa entered.

Then Rama, Sita and Lakshmana entered the hermitage, watching herds of quietly moving deer (undisturbed by their entry).
sa tatra brahmaṇaḥ sthānamagnēḥ sthānaṅ tathaiva ca৷৷3.12.17৷৷

viṣṇōḥ sthānaṅ mahēndrasya sthānaṅ caiva vivasvataḥ.

sōmasthānaṅ bhagasthānaṅ sthānaṅ kaubēramēva ca৷৷3.12.18৷৷

dāturvidhātuḥ sthānēca vāyōḥ sthānaṅ tathaiva ca.

nāgarājasya ca sthānamanantasya mahātmanaḥ৷৷3.12.19৷৷

sthānaṅ tathaiva gāyatryā vasūnāṅ sthānamēva ca.

sthānaṅ ca pāśahastasya varuṇasya mahātmanaḥ৷৷3.12.20৷৷

kārtikēyasya ca sthānaṅ dharmasthānaṅ ca paśyati.


saḥ he, tatra there, brahmaṇaḥ Brahma, sthānam place, tathaiva ca similarly, agnēḥ Fire's, sthānam place, viṣṇōḥ Visnu's, sthānam place, tathā so also, indrasya Indra's, vivasvataḥ Sun's, sthānaṅ caiva place too, sōmasthānam Moon's place, bhagasthānam place of Bhaga (one of the twelve forms of the Sun), kaubēram Kubera's, sthānamēva ca place too, dhātuḥ Supreme Spirit, vidhātuḥ the Creator's, sthānē ca place too, tathaiva ca la like that, vāyōḥ wind-god's, sthānam place, nāgarājasya serpent king's, mahātmanaḥ great soul's, anantasya Ananta's, sthānam place, tathaiva like that, gāyatryāḥ Gayatri's, sthānam place, vasūnām of Vasu's, sthānamēva ca place also, pāśahastasya Pasahasta's(one who holds the noose in his hand to pull and punish the mortals), mahātmanaḥ of the great soul, varuṇasya water god Varuna's, sthānaṅ ca place too, kārtikēyasya-
Kartikeya's, sthānaṅ ca place too, dharmasthānaṅ ca place of dharma, paśyati he saw.

Rama saw at the hermitage, the places (altars) of Brahma, Visnu, Agni (fire-god), Indra, Sun, Moon, Bhaga, Kubera, Dhata (supreme spirit), Vidhata (creator Brahman), Vayu (Wind-god), Ananta (great serpent-king), Gayatri, Vasu Pasahasta, Varuna, Kartikeya and Dharma .
tataśśiṣyaiḥ parivṛtō munirapyabhiniṣpatat৷৷3.12.21৷৷

taṅ dadarśāgratō rāmō munīnāṅ dīptatējasām.


tataḥ thereafter, śiṣyaiḥ by disciples, parivṛtaḥ surrounded by, munirapi sage also, abhiniṣpatat approaching, rāmaḥ Rama, dīptatējasām shinnig brightly among them, munīnām of the sages, agrataḥ in the forefront, tam him, dadarśa saw.

Thereafter surrounded by the disciples the sage came out. Rama saw him coming in front of the effulgent sages.
abravīdvacanaṅ vīrō lakṣmaṇaṅ lakṣmivardhanam. 3.12.22৷৷

ēṣa lakṣmaṇa niṣkrāmatyagastyō bhagavānṛṣiḥ.

audāryēṇāvagacchāmi nidhānaṅ tapasāmimam৷৷ 3.12.23৷৷


vīraḥ hero, lakṣmivardhanam augmenter of prosperity, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, vacanam words, abravīt said, lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, bhagavān glorious, ēṣaḥ this person, agastyaḥ Agastya, ṛṣiḥ sage, niṣkrāmati is coming here, audāryēṇa by nobility, imam him, tapasām of penance, nidhānam a treasure-trove, avagacchāmi I understand.

The valiant Rama said to Lakshmana, the enhancer of prosperity, O Lakshmana, sage Agastya is coming out. By virtue of his noble appearance, I know this sage to be a great treasure-trove of penances.
ēvamuktvā mahābāhuragastyaṅ sūryavarcasam.

jagrāha paramaprītastasya pādau parantapaḥ৷৷3.12.24৷৷


mahābāhuḥ one with mighty arms, parantapaḥ scorcher of enemies, sūryavarcasam shining like the Sun, agastyasya Agastya's, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, paramaprītaḥ with great pleasure, tasya his, pādau feet, jagrāha grasped.

Having said so, the mighty-armed Rama, the scorcher of enemies, grasped the feet of Agastya who was shining like the Sun.
abhivādya tu dharmātmā tasthau rāmaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ.

sītayā saha vaidēhyā tadā rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷3.12.25৷৷


tadā then, dharmātmā righteous self, rāmaḥ Rama, vaidēhyā with princess of Videha, sītayā with Sita, salakṣmaṇaḥ and with Lakshmana, abhivādya having offered respects, kṛtājñaliḥ with folded palms, tasthau stood.

Then righteous Rama with Sita, the princess of Videha, and Lakshmana offered respects with folded palms-standing.
pratijagrāha kākutsthamarcayitvāsanōdakaiḥ.

kuśalapraśnamuktvā ca āsyatāmiti cābravīt৷৷ 3.12.26৷৷


āsanōdakaiḥ seat and water, arcayitvā honouring, kākutstham to Rama (Kakutstha), pratijagrāha received, kuśalapraśnam made enquiries of his welfare, uktvā said, āsyatām be seated, iti ca these words, abravīt said.

Agastya received Rama by offering him seat and water, enquired about his well-being and said: Please be seated,
agniṅ hutvā pradāyārghyamatithīn pratipūjya ca.

vānaprasthyēna dharmēṇa sa tēṣāṅ bhōjanaṅ dadau৷৷ 3.12.27৷৷


saḥ he, agnim fire, hutvā after offering oblations, arghyam water etc, pradāya after providing, atithīn guests, pratipūjya ca after worshipping, vānaprasthēna according to hermit's, dharmēṇa tradition, tēṣām to them, bhōjanam food, dadau gave.

After giving oblations to the fire, and providing respectful offerings, the sage worshipped the guests according to the tradition of hermits and served them food.
prathamaṅ cōpaviśyātha dharmajñō munipuṅgavaḥ.

uvāca rāmamāsīnaṅ prāñjaliṅ dharmakōvidam৷৷3.12.28৷৷


atha and then, dharmajñaḥ the knower of dharma, munipuṅgavaḥ great among the sages, prathamam first, upaviśya after sitting, āsīnam seated, prāñjalim one with folded palms, dharmakōvidam knower of dharma, rāmam to Rama, uvāca said.

And then the great sage Agastya, knower of dharma first took his seat and addressed Rama, an export in the knowledge of dharma, seated with folded palms.
agniṅ hutvā pradāyārghyamatithiṅ pratipūjayēt.

anyathā khalu kākutstha tapasvī samudācaran৷৷3.12.29৷৷

duḥsākṣīva parē lōkē svāni māṅsāni bhakṣayēt.


agnim fire, hutvā after making an offering, arghyam water, pradāya after providing, atithim guest, pratipūjayēt should worship, kākutstha O Rama, anyathā otherwise, samudācaran by adopting, tapasvī the sage, duḥsākṣīva like a false witness, parē lōkē in other world, svāni his own, māṅsāni flesh, bhakṣayēt will have to eat.

O scion of the Kakutstha dynasty, only after offering oblations to the Fire-god, a guest should be worshipped with water etc. Otherwise the host will have to eat his own flesh in the other world like a false witness.
rājā sarvasya lōkasya dharmacārī mahārathaḥ৷৷3.12.30৷৷

pūjanīyaśca mānyaśca bhavān prāptaḥ priyātithiḥ.


sarvasya lōkasya in all the worlds, rājā king, dharmacārī follower of dharma, mahārathaḥ great warrior, pūjanīyaśca one worthy of worship, mānyaśca esteemed self, bhavān you, priyātithiḥ a dear guest, prāptaḥ have come to me.

You are king of all the worlds, a follower of dharma, a great warrior worthy of worship and an esteemed self. O Rama you are such a dear guest come to me.
ēvamuktvā phalairmūlaiḥ puṣpairanyaiśca rāghavam৷৷ 3.12.31৷৷

pūjayitvā yathākāmaṅ punarēva tatō.bravīt.


ēvam like this, uktvā having said, rāghavam to Rama, phalaiḥ with fruits, mūlaiḥ with roots, puṣpaiḥ with flowers, anyaiśca with other things, yathākāmam as he desired, pūjayitvā after worshipping, tataḥ thereafter, punarēva again, abravīt said.

Having said this to Rama, (the sage) honoured him by offering fruits, roots, flowers and other things as desired. He then said to Rama once again:
idaṅ divyaṅ mahaccāpaṅ hēmaratnavibhūṣitam৷৷3.12.32৷৷

vaiṣṇavaṅ puruṣavyāghra nirmitaṅ viśvakarmaṇā.

amōghassūryasaṅkāśō brahmadattaśśarōttamaḥ৷৷3.12.33৷৷


puruṣavyāghra O tiger among men, hēmaratnavibhūṣitam adorned with gold and gems, divyam divine, mahat great, idaṅ cāpam this bow, vaiṣṇavam belongs to Visnu, viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, nirmitam designed, sūryasaṅkāśaḥ glittering like the Sun, amōghaḥ unfailing, śarōttamaḥ best of arrows, brahmadattaḥ given by Brahma.

O! best among men ! this divine bow studded with gold and gems belongs to Visnu and designed by Visvakarma. This excellent, unfailing arrow, bright like the Sun, was given to me by Brahma.
dattau mama mahēndrēṇa tūṇī cākṣayasāyakau.

sampūrṇau niśitairbāṇairjvaladbhiriva pāvakaiḥ৷৷3.12.34৷৷

mahārajatakōśō.yamasirhēmavibhūṣitaḥ.


akṣayasāyakau with inexhaustible arrows, niśitaiḥ sharp ones, jvaladbhi: burning, pāvakairiva like fire, bāṇaiḥ with arrows, sampūrṇau filled, tūṇī quiver, mama to me, mahēndrēṇa by Indra, dattau were given, mahārajatakōśaḥ a big silver sheath, ayam this, hēmavibhūṣitaḥ adorned with gold.

These two quivers filled fully with sharp inexhaustible arrows, shining like flames of fire and this sword adorned with gold and this big silver sheath were given to me by Indra.
anēna dhanuṣā rāma hatvā saṅkhyē mahāsurān৷৷3.12.35৷৷

ājahāra śriyaṅ dīptāṅ purā viṣṇurdivaukasām.


rāma O Rama, purā in the past, viṣṇuḥ Visnu, saṅkhyē in the battle, anēna dhanuṣā with this bow, mahāsurān great demons, hatvā killing, divaukasām for the gods, dīptām shining, śriyam prosperity, ājahāra earned.

In ancient times Visnu killed the demons in a battle with this bow and brought back the glittering prosperity for the gods.
taddhanustau ca tūṇīrau śaraṅ khaṅgaṅ ca mānada৷৷ 3.12.36৷৷

jayāya pratigṛhṇīṣva vajraṅ vajradharō yathā.


mānada O Rama, bestower of honour, tat that, dhanuḥ bow, tau both, tūṇīrau quivers, śaram arrow, khaṅgaṅ ca sword, vajradharaḥ Indra the wielder of the thunderbolt, vajraṅ yathā as his thunderbolt, jayāya to win, pratigṛhṇīṣva you may please accept.

O bestower of honour, receive this bow, the two quivers, the sword and the arrow for your victory just like Indra accepts the thunderbolt.
ēvamuktvā mahātējāḥ samastaṅ tadvarāyudham.

datvā rāmāya bhagavānagastyaḥ punarabravīt৷৷3.12.37৷৷


mahātējā: luminous , bhagavān lord, agastyaḥ Agastya, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, samastam everything, tat that, varāyudham excellent weapons, rāmāya to Rama, datvā having given, punaḥ again, abravīt said.

The luminous lord Agastya, having said this, gave all the excellent weapons to Rama. And continued :
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē dvādaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twelfth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
